I bought the book and it is worth every dollar, including the additional 18% sales tax in Israel. It is a monumental work, very clear and well written. We needed this book. Having said that, I feel that the reuse aspects in general and the "unplanned indirect drinking reuse" in particular, have received only a marginal coverage in the book. That may be sufficient for the U.S.A., but innumerable European and Asian cities base their water supply on rivers that are mostly treated wastewater. In Israel, agriculture is based on reuse yet in the book, agriculture has the same weight as golf courses. Again, in the U.S.A. it may be so, but certainly not in the rest of the world. Industrial reuse mentions only evaporative cooling and that without the critical problem of blowdown disposal. Additional examples would be helpful. In reuse issues, "emerging patogens" (i.e., those feared but yet inexistent) are given more attention that critical problems such as salt content and subsequent aquifer and soil salination. Table 13-6 does not even mention salt. The inclusion of European and Israeli contributors would have produced an even better, a more balanced work. ... Read more

I was interesting in buying a professional publication relative to piping engineering and, by chance, I was able to borrow this book from a technical library before doing what can not be undone.

How disappointing !
An annoying verbiage prevails over pages after pages.
Few design guidelines, engineering calculations and good practice recommendations.
For instance, the section dealing with the water hammer phenomenon does not contain any equation !
Supports, insulation, valves, plastic and composite materials, ... are covered in far too general terms.
Even the reduced "dictionary alike" paper format leads to a bulky and difficult to read book where chapters are broken down in dozens of pages.

This book must be viewed as a general introduction to piping design engineering but definitively not as a practical reference for day-to-day design issues.

I Buy this book because needed references, general conditions and good practice to solve practical problems of pipes. However I meet with a tangled book, of little clarity and that in general it doesn't embrace the practical topics well referring a lot to the existent norms. Anyway it serves like support to the different norms to go developing a project but alone as reference and in any case like a book of easy access to solve problems on site or the day to day problems.

Yes, this book provides a well-illustrated overview of approaches to dock building and choices of materials. But it doesn't go far enough if you have a significant tidal range or if the wind blows. What's missing is any introduction to engineering. How to make sure the ramp doesn't fall off your float when the tide goes out. How to figure the static forces on your dock caused by 4 knot currents. How to estimate the wave heights and dynamic forces in 80 knot winds. And how to design a dock that will survive this abuse. You might want to involve a professional engineer in these situations, but that can be true of pretty much anything to do with docks. A book with this title should at least introduce you to these subjects and provide references for the gory details. Like some others, the author believes books like this should be peppered with jokes. Personally I find this annoying, but I must admit his jokes are above average. So if you want a funny introduction to building docks in gentle places, this book is for you.

I gave up trying to find any useful information on dock building and then happened across this book not long ago. Max Burns has written a very comprehensive reference book that covers almost any imaginable dock/shore situation including the one I was looking for . If you're thinking of building your own, add this book to your library!

This is for sure a very good "do it yourself" book. There is no doubt that it is a "must have" for those building their own dock/jetty. The author, Max Burns, has written an excellent book on the basics of dock design and construction that is surprisingly comprehensive but still practical. It is one of the two "only" books I have ever seen on recreational/residential dock construction. I think the way the book was able to streamline and summarize the various technical bits and pieces, although being targeted at the beginner to intermediate designer/builder, does not stop it from being a very useful and informative book to most people. Each chapter is short and readable; the subject matter is directly applicable to real life situations and is not written in a typical textbook manner. I think Sections 2 and 3 on dock types and building provide a hard-to-find and up-to-date overview on various related issues. The graphs and drawings are easy to interpret, and I believe are essential to understanding the key points. Coming from a construction/environmental background I found the inserts/information boxes on the environmental impacts and construction considerations to be written in a way that is very easy to understand and quick to pick-up. Yes, this for sure a very good book to have on the subject of dock design and construction. It is also a model for writers to follow on how to simplify a technical subject, which in many instances can be gruesomely complex, to an easily "digestible" read so people from different walks of life can enjoy it in a practical way and put it to use.

"The Dock Manual" tells you everything you need to know about designing, building and maintaining a small residential dock. It is an extremely well written and enjoyable book to read and is loaded with beautiful line drawings and photographs.

There are extensive sections on the different types of docks, materials, tools, hardware and building techniques. The section on connecting your dock to the shore was worth buying on its own! The section on designing your dock was short but there are pictures and drawings of various types of docks scattered throughout the book.

I've gotten many "do it yourself" type of books from Amazon and I think "The Dock Manual" is one of the best! If you have a dock, are planning on building a dock or just dreaming of it then you will LOVE this book!

So it's not 2" thick with color photographs. Considering it's the *only* book I have ever seen regarding residential dock construction, I think it's excellent. The book describes different types of docks, how they are constructed,and under what circumstances each should be used. It also warns of pit-falls, which many Do-it-Yourself books lack. This book was a classic, but why does it have to be metric? I guess converting it gave the academics something to do. Here is a news flash for the publisher: Civil Engineers praticing in the US don't use the metric system. Even our state DOT has given up on converting. I wish that the 6th edition was still available. Its just about useless now.

This book has been a standard for Civil Engineers for many years and is likely to be found in every civil engineering firm's library. It has timeless information on coeficients for weirs, orifices, and other drainage structures based on laboratory experiments from several sources. The one in our office is well worn and several have purchased their own copy to have at hand. With it, the CE can be confident in the values s/he uses to calculate flow characterisics. The book has several tables that are handy, but are not needed since the advent of the computer and handheld calculator. However, if one is familiar with the tables and has a good head for numbers, the tables allow for quick estimates of flow characteristics without having to hunt for the calculator. ... Read more

Hastead Method's new book entitled Advanced Water Distribution System Modeling and Management is an excellent expansion and extension of its previous book, Water Distribution Modeling. I found the previous book extremely helpful and utilized it many times in my work. The new voulme has been expanded to inculde such important topics as: model skeletonization, demand allocation using GIS, water quality sampling and calibration, integration of modeling and SCADA systems, Genetic-algorithm-based calibration and design, modeling of variable-speed pumps,water system security and hydraulic transients, use of flow emitters and the integration 0f GIS with hydraulic modelng. I expect to use this new text extensively and stongly reccomend it to both beginning and experienced engineers.

This is definitely a must-have for any civil engineer involved in hydraulics, especially water modelers. I had been surprised by the quality of the previous Water Distribution Modeling book, but the Advanced edition succeeded my expectations. Its writing is very understandable and it is full of creative illustrations. The chapter about Geographic Information Systems is very well written, and after realizing who were involved in its review (ESRI's staff), I don't wonder about its content anymore.

Highly recommended.

Haestad Methods has provided an excellent text for practical use by engineers. This text is best used in combination with Haestad Method's WaterCAD Software, but still provides enough to be valuable to any engineer who works with water distribution systems. This book is an improvement over the previous "Water Distribution Modeling" text and effectively replaces it. This book is a very useful resource for any civil engineering office that designs water distribution systems. The WaterCAD software program is also fantastic.

Although this book has "illustrated procedures for solving major pressure vessel design problems" it is full of errors and typos. Although the second edition has clarified many of the problems in the first edition, the procedures are unclear and significantly flawed. In addition, there are several instances where Mr. Moss fails to define the conditions in which certain equations should be, and should not be used. Unless you have significant experience in designing pressure vessels, avoid this book, it will only cause frustration and poorly designed units.

I received a copy of Dr. Moser's text "Buried Pipe Design, Second Edition". Upon a brief inspection, I was impressed with the breath, number of figures, illustrations, numerous example problems and extensive number of references at the end of each chapter.

The addition of SPIDA (soil-pipe interaction design and analysis) in Chapter 5 (Rigid Pipe Products) is very valuable. The introduction to new pipe materials, particularly the discussion of profile-wall polyethylene pipe is appreciated.

This is one of the finest books about facilities systems I have ever found. It's rather banal title is misleading, because this book covers every aspect of the very complicated piping systems that serve institutional, industrial and even residential buildings. To give you an example, the chapter on compressed gas systems explains the working mechanisms of 10 types of compressor motors, and then goes on to explain silencers, aftercoolers, filters (and how to select filters) air dryers (with explanations and diagrams of the verious types), lubricators, air compressor drives, pressure regulation, cooling water, hose and fittings. Then in the same chapter it explains specialized features of compressed gas for light industrial uses, laboratories, and hospitals. And this is just one chapter. There are another 18 chapters with similar levels of detail and comprehensiveness, including vacuum systems, site utilities, general plumbing, waste, even animal care facility systems.
