5-0 out of 5 stars Best Set Up Time Reduction Manual
This book does an excellent job of explaining how manufacturing setup times can be drastically reduced, including many useful examples. Reducing setup times is critical in the effort to implement the extraordinarily efficient Toyota Production System.
The text is much clearer than "Kaizen For Quick Changeover" by Sekine and Arai. This book deals with setup time reductions for loosely toleranced components or assemblies, and does not deal specifically with tightly toleranced parts.

4-0 out of 5 stars A really USEFUL book...
Before reading this book, i had no certain opinions about SMED system. There was a lack of knowledge and i could not apply this technique properly in the factory which I am working for. Now, i am applying SMED technique and decreasing setup times sharply even not under ten minutes. This book opens doors for its reader. Pay money and take it. ! ... Read more

Book Description

"If you currently do not use an RTOS, read this book to gain a deep understanding of what these powerful tools can do for your code. If you're looking at commercial products, read the book to understand some of the trade-offs and gain an appreciation for what happens when in an OS."- Jack Ganssle, consultant, teacher, and writer

· Use this complete, portable, ROMable, scalable, preemptive RTOS in your own product · Meets the requirements of safety-critical systems

MicroC/OS-II is a highly portable, ROMable, scalable, preemptive real-time, multitasking kernel (RTOS) for microprocessors and microcontrollers with performance comparable to - and in some cases exceeding - commercially available kernels. Written in ANSI C for maximum portability, MicroC/OS-II has been ported to more than 40 different processor architectures ranging from 8- to 64-bit CPUs. Since 1992, MicroC/OS has been used by thousands of developers worldwide in applications ranging from cameras to avionics. Certifiable for use in safety-critical systems, this RTOS has been proven to be robust, reliable, and safe enough for you to use in your own applications. This book describes the design and implementation of MicroC/OS-II and teaches you the fundamentals of a multitasking real-time system. You'll learn about kernel structure, scheduling, context switching, task and time management, intertask communications and synchronization, dynamic memory allocation, and much more. The description of the code in this book has been completely rewritten to make it easier to follow. The presentation of system services has been significantly expanded from one to six chapters, two of which address new services: mutual exclusion semaphores (mutexes) and event flags. The porting guide has been completely revised and includes tips on how to test a port. Finally, appendix materials have been added to include coding conventions and quick reference charts.

The companion CD-ROM contains all of the source code for MicroC/OS-II and ports for the Intel 80x86 processor running in real mode and for the large model. Within just a few minutes, you'll be able to test some of the features of MicroC/OS-II on your Windows-based PC. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book and a Great RTOS
There is no equivalent to this book. The knowledge offered here, along with the complete source code for the µC/OS real-time operating system is everything you need to know to understand preemptive priority-based multitasking. Whether you just want to learn what goes on behind the scenes in your commercial RTOS or you're looking for a small, inexpensive RTOS with source code, this is the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
Jean LaBrosse is one of those people who has that uncanny knack for taking a complicated issue and making it seem simple. His MicroC/OS is a wonderful example. The book does much more than simply present usable source code (though it does that also). It explains _WHY_ the code is the way it is.

MicroC/OS II is very much in today's spirit of open-source software. It is rapidly becoming, for real-time embedded systems, what Linux represents for desktops. I also agree with another reader, who points out that the OS is not just a good OS for real-time systems, but a good, _RELIABLE_, OS in general. If only we could get Microsoft to follow LaBrosse's KISS approaches.

3-0 out of 5 stars Writing style is often confusing
I have a general background in computer science and am trying to learn about embedded systems from this book. My main objection is that the writing needs to be edited to improve clarity. For example on page 61, the author states "Generally, the first message inserted in the queue is the first message extracted from the queue (FIFO). In addition, to extract messages in a FIFO fashion, uC/OS-II allows a task to get messages Last-In-First-Out (LIFO)." The second sentence is ambiguous. Does it mean "In addition to the ability to extract messages in a FIFO fashion, ..." or "In addition, in order to extract messages in a FIFO fashion, ..."? On the next page the author states "Interrupts allow a microprocessor to process events when they occur, which prevents the microprocessor from continuously polling (looking at) an event to see if it has occurred." In this sentence, "prevents the microprocessor from" should be changed to "removes the need for the microprocessor to be". The average reader already knows enough about LIFOs, FIFOs, and interrupts to interpret these sentences correctly, but in many other cases the lack of clarity is a serious impediment to understanding. The book also contains various errors. For example, the path name of a .xls file, given on pages 370 and 403, is incorrect.

4-0 out of 5 stars Only if you intend to use uCOSII
If you want to implement uCOSII, then yes this book is the reference manual. It is not very nice looking and is made of thick paper but the content is good.
If you only want to learn the different aspects of writing and debugging code for embedded systems, I highy recommand "An Embedded Software Primer" by D.E. Simon. If you have Simon's, you don't need uCOSII.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Starter's Book
If you are just starting to learn RTOS this book may have some value. If you have played with RTOS for a few years this book may not have much value to you. The concept is very lean and I completed reading it in about 3 hours... ... Read more

Book Description

This well-established text describes the principles, applications and design of the medical instrumentation most commonly used in hospitals. Because equipment changes with time, the authors stress fundamental principles of operation and general types of equipment. They avoid detailed descriptions and photographs of specific models. Design principles are emphasized so that a scientist with only some background in electronics can gain enough information to design instruments that may not be commercially available. Since biomedical engineering is an interdisciplinary field, the authors have provided varied healthcare industry applications for each type of instrument. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Electronic Medical Instrumentation
As a coursebook, I found 'Medical Instrumentation' to be a sound survey of electrical medical diagnostic instrumentation. The book does review electrical therapeutic medical instrumentation; however, it's coverage is not as thorough.

This is an excellent resource for engineers planning to specialize in medical device design.

A good understanding of physiology is necessary to fully utilize the Medical Instrumentation text. If you have little medical background, I recommend Review of Medical Physiology (by William Ganong) as a companion.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could be More Simple
Explains dynamic characteristics of circuits very well. It has a ton of information - which can be too much. If you are just starting out in a course on instrumentation, I would recommend, "Principles of Bioinstrumentation" by Normann. His book is much simpler. Ideally, you should get both,..., it depends what level you are at (as a 4th year bioengineering student, I preferred the simple version...)

5-0 out of 5 stars very good
This book is very good about medical devices and application

3-0 out of 5 stars The content is almost identical to the second edition
It was with great enthusiasm that we ordered the 3rd edition of Professor's Webster big hit. With all my respects for Professor Webster, I was personally disapointed to observe that this edition has almost the same content as the second one. Maybe it is worth mentioning that I have adopted this text for my bioinstrumentation course from the very first edition. It is amazing that some of the very good and recent works done by Prof. Webster's team of engineers and students was not at all included. Even the references are almost the same as the second edition. As the second edition had really something to say compared to the first one, the natural expectation was to see a 3rd edition much more elaborated in terms of novelties in the field. The amount of new material put into this edition seems not to justify the publication of the 3rd edition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Information Governance
Jane Carbone provides a practical guide to implementing Enterprise Architecture. The book is drawn from Jane's extensive experience of developing enterprise and data architectures.

It defines a best practice Enterprise Architecture approach using the Zachman Framework. The book is organised to describe:

1. A business framework for collecting and analysing key enterprise business information. This entails defining current and target business states and, identifying gaps and opportunities.

2. An IT framework for translating business opportunities into plans. This entails defining principles, models, listing key IT resources and standards.

3. An implementation framework for delivering Enterprise Architecture projects. This entails identifying, selecting and prioritising projects.

4. Key implementation activities including defining and establishing metrics, gaining buy-in from executives and IT staff and, detailing governance processes for enabling compliance.

5. Key architecture processes, roles and human resource policies.

6. Enterprise Architecture deliverables. This includes: the IT plan (updated at least annually); an annual financial plan for IT; a project architecture assessment; a quarterly update and presentations.

This book is an asset to anyone who is grappling with the implementation of an Enterprise Architecture capability within a large organisation. It provides a holistic view of information governance centred around data. It is particularly relevant for people engaging in regulatory and compliance initiatives such as Sarbannes Oxley and Basel II.

Lastly, Jane has written a handbook for practitioners, it is written in a clear and concise manner. It exudes the experience of someone who has learnt Enterprise Architecture the hard way!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Achievable Enterprise Architecture
Finally - a book about Enterprise Architecture that steers clear of theoretical discourse and provides a practical, useable and clearly achievable approach! The components of the Toolkit are formidable and pragmatic - the guidelines and advice on Architecture Models (chapter 7) and Project Implementation (chapter 10) alone are worth the price of the book. And I was delighted to see data given equal time with functions and platform - this is an area that so many IT architecture plans either totally miss or grossly underestimate. But it's the lessons learned (provided throughout the book) that really drive the points home.

Ms Carbone's conversational style makes the approach seem more credible and the examples more resonant - it's the literary equivalent of standing around the water cooler and discussing the latest IT strategy, warts and all! This is ultimately a good thing, because it's presented in a constructive fashion - it makes the reader assess not only how they approach IT architecture, but also the pre-conceived notions they have about it, and provides realistic solutions to typical roadblocks. Ultimately, this book should be required reading for both IT architects and their business clients, because it provides a common understanding of IT Architecture's purpose and the important role that each group plays.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enterprise Architectre planning made easy
This book is the first that succinctly get to the heart of enterprise architecture, the benefits, the reason to take the time to plan. This book is perfect for both the business side of the house and the IT community to come together and realize the benefits of doing it right the first time. This book will never leave your desk and will serve as the model for everyone to use and follow.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pragmatic addition to body of knowledge
I've used a number of approaches to architecture, including the Zachman Framework, the RUP 4+1, SEI's ATAM, and a plethora of others. I was skeptical that this book was going to add anything of value to the art and practice of architecture. I was wrong. This book gives a realistic approach to architecture. Better, with minor tailoring it can be applied to any of the more mainstream methodologies, and does so because it is a toolkit of methods more than a formal methodology. Of course, if you are not using one of the plethora of architecture methodologies, this book's approach will also serve nicely as a standalone methodology as well.

The approach is based on "Infomajic Enterprise Architecture Toolkit", which was developed by the author's company (Infomajic). In some ways the approach is a scaled down version of the Zachman Framework - indeed, there is a fairly detailed comparison between the two starting on page 11.

There are three main stages to the architecture toolkit, (1) connecting the architecture to business, (2) developing the architecture itself, and (3) implementation strategies. The latter is what sets this book apart from many which focus on 'fun' stuff and gloss over the gory details associated with implementation. Each step within these three stages are thoroughly discussed in great detail, yet the author's brisk writing style makes even the most mundane aspects highly readable.

Key aspects of this book that I particularly like include copious real world examples, width and depth of the content, and outstanding use of charts and tables to convey information. In addition to the detailed approach in the body of the book, the nine appendices are invaluable aids, ranging from interview outlines, to estimating work effort guidelines, to sample job descriptions and architecture assessment workshop outlines.

Regardless of which architecture methodology you are using (or are committed to using), you'll gain many useful ideas from this book. If you are searching for a viable methodology, this one is complete and has been proven in the real world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical Approach
This book offers a straightforward approach to IT architecture and a very practical framework for implementation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A "must have" for design/manufacturing engineers
I teach Design for Manufacturing at Ohio State and (parttime) at NASA, and can honestly say that Bralla is absolutely the best single reference for working designers and manufacturing engineers that I've found. An incredible compendium of useful info on just about any manufacturing process you can think of, and plenty you HAVEN'T thought of, plus chapters on Design for Assembly, materials, economic considerations - you name it. The book is a bit pricey, but considering the amount of useful information packed into it, it's a steal. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for beginner
This is a very good introductory book. All components of lean manufacturing system have been explained. More importantly, the language is very simple and easy to understand. The sample templates are great. One aspect, I would like to see is the cost concept. Particularly, how an established factory can be transformed to lean system with respect to cell concept and layout change. The author has written about the cost benefit of lean system, however, no supporting evidence has been provided. But overall, this book is great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for the PE EXAM
Norton is an awesome resource. For students going to college it may seem overwhelming. But it is the MOST up to date text on the market on the subject of Machine Design. While taking the PE exam I compared Shigley vs Norton on information, and Norton had all the answers. The author has done a monumental job in bringing the vast spectrum of Machine Design in a very well composed book. I have yet to come across a resource like Norton. In fact, I recommend this book to practicing engineers. Almost every section of the book has real world value. Its worth having on the shelf. I was always into Shigley but Norton is more in line with industry practice as opposed to academic excercises as presented by Shigley.

3-0 out of 5 stars Why buy this when you can buy Shigley?
This text would be OK if there were no other sources on the subject of mechanical design. However, there are! There is a reason that Shigley wrote a professional standard and Norton did not. It has all the details but there are proof-reading and similar errors.

5-0 out of 5 stars It's really a great book...
If you really want to learn and understand mechanical design, Mr. Norton is generous, he teachs everything there is to know. The chapters introduction it's something beyond you can expect from an engineering book. You must have it...

2-0 out of 5 stars not well organized
As a student trying to learn the art of machine design I found that this book was rather unorganized and it wasn't until I had read it and studied the pages time and time again that the principals really became clear.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent procedure, theory and examples.
The book has excellent procedure and theory development and explanation. The end of the chapter problems need extreme help. The questions are redundant, unclear, and are built upon from answers of previous chapter problems, sometimes requiring answering a question from chapters 2, 4, 5, and 6 to get a final answer in a chapter 7 question. Many answers in the back of the book are incorrect, about (50%). Looks like Norton had his TA do his problems. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Poorly Developed Characters, Thin Plot
If you buy this book expecting a corporate thriller, filled with larger-than-life characters and exciting tales of industrial espionage, you will be disappointed. TPM Manager is a tiresome main character---imagine a dumbed-down, cliche-filled John Galt from "Atlas Shrugged." Many times I shouted: Shut the F--- up! as I read TPM Manager spew drivel on the wonders of TPM. Initially, I wondered if Suzuki's book was purely ironic. Alas, the author really believes this nonsense. Here's some free advice: save the money, skip the reorg, don't hire the consultant, refrain from making people "take ownership" over a language that no one really takes seriously and instead show re-runs of the "Love Boat" once a week. It is guaranteed to make your employees run back to their cubicles and do some work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply the BIBLE of TPM
Three years ago I used to work for a corporation that used absorbed the TPM (Total Prodictive Maintenance) methodology and made it its own with certain in-house touches.

When we were at the beginning stages of implementing TPM, the officer (that's the name of the role) in charge of the rollout made sure all of management had a good grasp on the ideas captured by this book, and a few even had a chance to meet Mr. Suzuki, to ask him questions about it, only to receive a very concise "Read the book!" as the answer.

The truth is that almost all you need to know to kick off TPM in your industry is hereby contained, however there's one BIG issue I should make you aware of: the book lays down the principles, all of which need to be internalized at all levels within your culture. If that is not achieved (the "zero-loss mentality", for example) you will feel frustrated, and might even be tempted to drop the program altogether. DON'T! If you need to, get consultants, try again, try harder: it's a proven model, and it works, you just have to be (you and your people) very disciplined about it.

5-0 out of 5 stars TPM in Process Industries
I have worked widely using TPM as a practitioner and a consultant. For me this work represents the "bible" that I use to base my work from. The tools apply equally well to high speed lines as well as to process equipment.

5-0 out of 5 stars TPM for all industries
This book is the best I have read on the subject of TPM. Although it is titled for process industries it is relevant for production industries also, showing the differences betwwen the two. It is packed with ideas and shows how to start and run TPM within your industry. I showed it around at work and three of my collegues went out and bought it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Operations & Oracle E-Business
The right cross-section of credible authors (development and pre/post sales consulting) has created an outstanding reference book of Oracle's supply chain suite of applications. Currently, in the marketplace, there are no books covering this topic nor do I expect any group of authors to cover the breadth of this topic with such depth and clarity.

What I particularly liked was the extensive use of visuals, tables & screen shots to keep people like me with butterfly attention spans engaged. Additionally, the author's covered hot topics such as Oracle's demand planning, advanced supply chain planning, warehouse management and intelligence applications.

People that would find the book useful include: post-sales consultants, pre-sales consultants (Oracle and Oracle competitors), project managers, functional users (particularly super-users), application selection decisionmakers, developers (particularly Oracle competitors) and resume architects.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book for Supply Chain Management
This book explains in detail how the real world business processes are incorporated in Oracle Applications. Helps persons who don't have prior knowledge in oracle manufacturing and Supply chain management and want to get into the ERP. Gives broad knowledge of manufacturing and supply chain management concepts, starting from enterprise structure to all the business processes involved in corporate management. Modules are covered in the sequence of business flow.

Helps technical people, who work in oracle applications gets clear picture of business flows. Functional people get clear understanding of the data structure by ER diagrams and database table information.

Appropriate screenshots are provided wherever it is needed for better understanding.

I strongly recommend to have this book for better understanding of oracle manufacturing modules.

I just got this book 3 days ago, and it is better than I expected it to be even after reading the rave reviews. It is the first book you should get when joining an Oracle apps project. I am going to be building a Data Warehouse on Oracle Apps, and my team has not been involved in transactional implementation (surprise??). After weeks of being lost in the conversations/meetings, now we can use this book to quickly understand the lingo and issues of the implementation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for learing Oracle Apps.
I bought this book in the hopes that atleast this one will Give me more insite into Oracle Apps. Oracle Apps are so huge that some times its difficult to understand how the key components are connected. I am glad that this book does precisely that. I am glad I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great content...Great book!!
This book has filled in a void for a subject as vast and complex as Oracle Manufacturing and Supply Chain.
The book is nicely ordered and covers the a lot of topics in great depth with good examples and diagrams whereever necessary to explain the concepts.
The book maintains a good flow from topic to topic to better understand the concept and coordination between various modules of the e-business suite.
A very well thought and very well written book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for Packaging Engineers
This book contains lots of creative, (and basic), packaging patterns which are scaled so mock-ups are easily made. When I am starting a package design project I page through the book to get ideas. The carton section is especially helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Packaging in 5 min or less.
This book takes all the stress out of figuring out how to put unique and traditional packages together and lets you focus on what interest you the most instead of fidling with technical details. Its easy to read, and has nice large illustrations. I have found it really easy to trace these illos in adobe illustrator instead of starting from scratch. It is thick and comprehensive. There are so many examples it is hard to find one that isn't in the book. ... Read more

Book Description

In his best-selling book Japanese Manufacturing Techniques, Richard J. Schonberger revolutionized American manufacturing theory and, more important, practice. In that breakthrough book, he revealed that Japanese manufacturing excellence was not culturally bound. Offering the first demystified explanation of the simple techniques that fueled Japan's industrial success, he demonstrated how the same methods could be put to work as effectively in U.S. plants.

Now, in World Class Manufacturing, Schonberger returns to tell the success stories of nearly 100 American corporations -- including Hewlett-Packard, Harley-Davidson, General Motors, Honeywell, and Uniroyal -- that have adopted the famed just-in-time production and "total quality control" strategies. Based on his firsthand experience as a major consultant to American industry, he examines how they did it -- and illustrates how the same concrete, specific steps used by these top companies can be implemented in any factory today. What's more, Schonberger shows that his bold concepts and reforms apply equally to all industries, whether the product is computers, pasta, or trucks, and to all divisions -- from manufacturing and engineering to accounting and marketing.

According to Schonberger, world-class manufacturing depends on blended management -- rather than domination by a separate group of managers -- which marshalls resources for continual rapid improvement. To achieve world-class status, companies must change procedures and concepts, which in turn leads to recasting relations among suppliers, purchasers, producers, and customers. Acknowledging the difficulty inherent in such changes, Schonberger stresses that employee involvement and interaction, both on the shop floor and in the decision-making/problem-solving process, is key. Wary of those who view improvement in terms of modernizing equipment, he points out that making maximum use of people and current machinery is a company's first priority; automation, if necessary, should come much later.

World Class Manufacturing also includes Schonberger's 17-point action agenda to guide innovators toward manufacturing excellence, from getting to know the customer to cutting the number of suppliers, reducing error in production, and deciding when and how to automate.

Indispensable for all manufacturing innovators who aim to keep ahead of the competition, this inspiring, groundbreaking volume does much more than just recommend or theorize about the new manufacturing approach. Plainly, realistically, and logically, it explains how it's done. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book of Its Kind
I bought this book almost exactly 10 years ago at the MIT book store in Cambridge, Mass. Frankly and without exaggeration it changed my life (I run a manufacturing operation). Since then I have bought copies for friends.

There are some just dramatic examples in the book of how one can streamline a manufacturing operation to improve output and increase quality. To get your attention the author compares plants that are run by Japanese with old eqipment but using the systems outlined in the book for quality and productivity with American plants and there is a shocking tenfold difference in favour of Japan. Not ten percent but 1000 percent difference in output.

Obviously if you have an interest buy and read this book. It is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
Richard J. Schonberger, author of the critically acclaimed book, Japanese Manufacturing Techniques, which revolutionized American manufacturing theory and practices, now examines how world-class manufacturing techniques can be implemented by American corporations. This 1986 classic remains valuable, since manufacturing changes do not happen overnight, and plenty of companies are far from world-class in their approach to efficiency and productivity. Schonberger writes clearly, authoritatively and often amusingly, covering every element of world-class manufacturing in detail. We at getAbstract recommend this book for everyone involved in the manufacturing process, not just mangers and executives, but all employees who seek a context and a future for their work.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you want to manufacture better-- here you go.
I must say that I first read this because I had to, but onceI did it (really, now) changed my outlook on production. The author details not only the whys of good manufacturing practice, but also the hows and then goes into many case studies to demonstrate that he's not just blowing smoke from his ivory tower. Even better, the stuff works! One division of my company got hooked on the "World Class" bandwagon before it came into vogue. I went to tour their facility and I swore I had walked into Schonberger's book. Anyway, applied correctly, this book can turn your systems upside down and make you more profitable than you can almost imagine (inventory turns over 100? Believe it!). The best thing is that all this happens by developing employees and truly giving the line responsibility for production to the individual line workers. Tough stuff for most companies to even consider, and perhaps my only criticism of the book is that the author doesn't give an accurate picture of how long a transition from "traditional" management to World Class Mfg can require. Our facility worked for six years to get it right, which is actually very good for this transition (he says allow for a 10 year plan in his 1996 sequel, also excellent). Anyway, I'm putting theory into practice in my own mfg line, and thankfully I have this book to guide me. I'm buying copies for everyone in my production team and we'll "go back to school," so to speak. Wish me luck. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reference but dated
Not a bad reference for most users. It is a little basic and some of the info is dated. It's a little weak in more advanced areas like indiredt addressing, use and construction of subroutines, but otherwise this is a good book to keep in a general library for technicians responsible for supporting PLC based systems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great for AB users
I have used this text in our PLC class for three years. I really like that it is specific to Allan Bradley products. The workbook that goes with this text has programming assignments to reinforce the concepts. As I train on AB SLC500s exclusively, it is almost ideal. I say almost becaue there are many references to obsolete instructions used with a PLC no longer manufactured. It is due for a new edition. But until then, it remains a very good text to teach from, or if you simply want to know more about the subject.

2-0 out of 5 stars OK but could be much better written
The information contains in the book makes it a pretty good primer on SIP. The organization of the book and its content is very good. The language and ways in which the author explains certain things are confusing. I think the author should be able to do a much better job in explaining things. I often find myself having to re-read certain explainations twice and much carefully when I feel I shouldn't have to -- the topics are not complicated but not well explained. Someone like Doug Comer or Richard Stevens would probably be able to make it a much easier read.

4-0 out of 5 stars Costly, but a great introduction to SIP
Really enjoyed this book - easy to read, and the examples emphasized the points he was trying to make. The only negative is the cost of the book ... I got mine from the library, and was shocked to see how much this was selling for. After you understand SIP, this would be a decent reference book, but not the best.

3-0 out of 5 stars Just an introduction to the SIP RFC
This book simply summarizes some of the SIP RFC into more user-friendly english. It consists mostly of lists of SIP headers and error codes, lifted from the RFC. There is no sample code or discussion of SIP applications or architecture. Of course, the RFC is pretty hefty, so this book has been a useful introduction. I still use the RFC as my real reference, though, because there are some minor discrepancies between the book and the RFC, such as some error code names.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Primer
I've read and reviewed a great deal of technical literature, and found Dr. Johnston's book to be a detailed and well-written introduction to an extremely complex protocol. Without over-simplifying, Dr. Johnston, manages to convey a great deal of information in a style of writing that is lively and engaging (and that's a real breath of fresh air, compared to similar books on the topic). I plan to put this on the required reading list for my next class on the subject.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not the best
I found the book useful as a backup reference to the spec, but not the best explanation I have seen. It was at times slightly confusing, and found that I was constantly referring back to the SIP overview in D. Collins "Carrier Grade Voice over IP" (which is very well written). From an education perspective, it was a little like a dictionary for SIP that explained concepts such as what a given header was for, but gave little info on how it is used, or what the industry is doing.

There were some call flows, but they were sparse with a few mistakes. Further, they were either very base, or very comprehensive, and did not cover many of the questions I had.

In summary, if you are looking for a readable reference to help with the not so reader friendly RFC, this is pretty good. For learning how SIP is being imlemented beyond basic call handling, keep looking.

As an option, also look at the book by Collins noted above. It is a good overview reference, and tries to address where the industry is moving from an implementation perspective ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for those interested in the topic
Shapiro's book is really an interesting introduction to modeling the Supply Chain. After an easy to follow overview on the tools: Linear Programming (Simplex) and Mixed Integer Programming (with an appendix over the Branch and Bound method), these fundamentals are applied to strategic and tactical issues related to modeling the SC. Some actual applications together with their outcomes make examples more credible and dowm to earth. Examples run on excel's solver are strightforward and useful to get a basic handle on the topic.

Several chapters on an unified optimization methodology for planning SC problems and databases are also interesting. The book ends up with a reviw on how decisions are taken within an organization and the role of modeling and optimization techniques. Its plain english is another positive point.

My only "but" could be an overly superficial treatment of hot topics in SC as facilities location whereas covering issues as Corporate Financial Planning far from the core of the book. All in all a profitable bought.

4-0 out of 5 stars Práctico, Nivel Táctico - Operativo, Muy Útil

5-0 out of 5 stars You have NO EXCUSE not to get it -period!
This book is about math-modeling of Supply Chain Management(SCM). While only few analytical SCM books in market, this book is still different. The presentation of math-modeling does not forbid your curiousity in model by giving a proof, theory, lemma; this book shows you the modeling method to capture the complex SCM problem. I like this book over Simchi-Levi (logic of logistics) for its description, practical aspect and future direction. Also, I prefer this book over Chopra (SCM) and Simchi-levi (SCM) for its higher and better modeling issues. This book takes care the readers well since the solution technique is also given, e.g., Linear Programming, Mixed Integer Programming, Unified Optimization, even simulation. While this book is more on quantitative, the interaction between qualitative and quantitative is given -both basic and advanced level. Suggestion to adapt modeling technique to organization is well presented also. The information technology (IT) section covers most SCM issues as well as the implementation and database for SCM. If you're in this area (either academia or practitioner), you have NO EXCUSE not to get this book seriously. For its uniqueness, this book is not supplementary or option, but it's a requirement for you. ... Read more

Practical Lean Accounting: A Proven System for Measuring and Managing the Lean Enterprise Brian Maskell and Bruce Baggaley

As companies move ahead with the implementation of lean production, financial functions often lag behind. When this happens, not only do they fail to actively support the effort, but they can actually hinder it.

In Practical Lean Accounting: A Proven System for Measuring and Managing the Lean Enterprise, authors Brian Maskell and Bruce Baggaley present a step-by-step method for transforming a manufacturing company's financial functions to support lean manufacturing. This step-by-step method transforms the accounting system to follow the company's pathway through lean implementation covering what needs to be done at each stage to support lean.

A case study runs throughout the text illustrating the lean accounting transformation within the context of the whole lean enterprise. A CD-ROM is included containing detailed forms, charts, and diagrams supporting the transformation to lean accounting.

Practical Lean Accounting is a valuable tool for CFOs, Controllers, accounting staff, and general managers that use key financial information to control their processes and support lean implementation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tool for the Lean Enterprise
This book is right on target for the emerging practice of Lean accounting. It gets into the brass tacks of what you really need to do to report results that really mean something to the folks that can take action to improve the business. The entire concept of Value Stream Costing makes so much sense it's a wonder we haven't been using it for decades.
We have asked manufacturing to change, change, change in order to improve results and compete in this global market yet we have ignored the need to provide the necessary support from the accounting area. This book shows, step by step, how accounting must partner with manufacturing as well as engineering to provide actionable information in a timely manner. The old conventions of standard costing and variance analysis lead to poor decisions and this book will explain why.
A must read if you are serious about Lean manufacturing!

5-0 out of 5 stars Getting the "Dough" to Flow
Based on the tenets of lean thinking, Mr. Maskell & Mr Baggaley present a powerful & practical implementation methodology that is applicable to lean accounting and all lean business practices. By integrating lean accounting with the transition to lean systems thinking, organizations now have the measurement and analysis tools to make robust business decisions at any level.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Guide to Lean Operations Worth Its Weight in Diamonds!
I cannot recall ever seeing a guide to putting in a new control and measurement process of any kind that is as good as this one.

Although its title suggests that it is about accounting only, the authors deal almost as much with how to manage perceptions, progress and processes in establishing lean operations to create a lean enterprise. In addition, the book is designed to allow you to apply its wisdom regardless of where you are in putting in learn manufacturing or services. You simply turn to chapter 18 to run a diagnostic to determine what you should be working on first . . . and what follows.

The book is like a finished diamond . . . each chapter exposes the beauty of another facet of lean accounting. While this creates a little redundancy, its necessary if readers are to be able to use this book by beginning at whatever stage is appropriate for them.

The book is also enhanced by a CD with templates of the formats discussed in the book.

I was particularly impressed with the in-depth continuing example that covers all of the subjects in the book. It made the concepts much easier to understand.

The writing is clear, crisp, and practical.

I have seldom seen lean manufacturing proceed unless it had strong support and direction from the accounting and financial staffs. Yet most such staffs are not yet trained in how to play those roles. With this book, they can.

A key early problem is that traditional accounting will show a REDUCTION in profits when lean manufacturing is first begin. This is because inventories will be reduced, so burden on the reduced production will be higher. That's the opposite of the economic reality, where costs are actually being reduced while inventories become smaller. Many programs are killed at that point without understanding that the effects are temporary. With this guide, you can prepare the organization to anticipate and understand these effects.

The book goes on to give you a good way to decide when various accounting steps can either be dropped or simplified as lean manufacturing reaches the stage of being properly in control of your processes.

I particularly liked the way the book describes how the financial staff can shift its focus to identifying opportunities to enhance profits and cash flow further through lean manufacturing. There's also a good process for how all of the functions should work together to make more progress in this way.

The book is also illustrated with many photographs of actual measurements and controls in place for lean manufacturing. Although the reproduction of these images is often not very good, I think you will get the idea.

Bravo for Mr. Maskell and Mr. Baggaley! They've written a classic.

As I finished the book, I began to think about how many other processes in companies would benefit from this kind of careful measurement and redesign. New product development should be a prime example. Perhaps the authors will take on another such subject in a future book. I hope they will.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Lean Organizations
This book provides a roadmap for and firms transitioning themselves into lean or as it was known in the 1990's, "just-in-time", organizations. As they make the journey, they often find their accounting and measurements systems are an obstacle to success.

It is a practitioners' book. It focuses on creating customer value, which is the key principle of lean thinking. The book can be read in the traditional fashion - front to back. The authors tell us, however, that is not how it was written. Their starting point is their "Lean Accounting Diagnostic," found in the appendix. It assesses your company's progress with Lean Accounting and helps develop a plan to implement change.

A case study runs throughout the book. It illustrates the conversion of the financial functions required at each step to support the endeavor.

The book is well-written and comprehensive. For those looking to support lean processes, it is a must read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for manufacturing CEO's and CFO's
This book outlines the process for moderninzing manufacturing companies' accounting and control systems. U.S. manufacturing is facing stiff competition from low cost overseas companies, and Practical Lean Accounting explains how U.S. manufacturers must tranform their business to remain competitive. The book is written in easy to understand language that any manufacturing person will find easy to follow. If you work for a Lean Manufacturer, this is required reading! ... Read more
