    4-0 out of 5 stars Mechanics of Materials, 4th ed.
    I am a civil engineering student who just finished a course in stregth of materials with this text. I found the book fairly easy to follow with good example problems. My main complaint is that the authors consistantly referred to diagrams and figures that were on different pages, causing the reader to flip back and forth. Sometimes the figures were 5 or 6 pages back. This interrupted the continuity of the text, making it more difficult to read. Otherwise, I feel the book is excellent. (If you care, I got an A- in the course. Take this however you want to)

    I know that this is considered THE mechanics of materials textbook. And paging through it, you can see that the text and figures are very well done, with every effort made to make the material clearly accessible. So in this respect, the book shines. My main objection with this text is its content. Every imaginable method of beam analysis is presented, and the tendency is to treat every stress problem as some sort of beam. Thus if you're a civil engineer designing beams, you'll probably like this book. But if you are a mechanical engineer, responsible for designing mating parts with complex geometries, you'll be sorrily disappointed. Mechanical parts in the real world are not prismatic beams, perfect cylinders, and other utopian forms. They have threads, fillets, holes and other discontinuities that produce stress concentrations -- stress concentrations that have devastating effects in fatigue if not properly accounted for. I know that some will say "Hey, if you want fatigue analysis, get a Machine Design text". But come on, let's be realistic. Many undergrad students will never go on to take such a course, and the fact that well over 90% of real world failures are fatigue failures necessitates that more than 10 pages out of 900 be dedicated to this subject. Also, there is little if any coverage on 3-dimensional stress, plate and shell theory, plasticity, tensors, and a ton of other stuff that is not overly complex, but is used everywhere in the real world. I don't care how "elementary" the book claims to be. If it's over 900 pages, it should cover these important topics. Maybe someday we'll have more practicing engineers writing textbooks -- textbooks that treat real life problems, rather than fictional, academic idealizations.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Great introductory text for strength of materials
    I was surprised at how clear and thorough this book was. I read almost the entire book (left out just a number of sections), and if you're like me and need to know the proofs for the engineering models, then this is great. It explained derivations, equation limitations, and problem-solving methods in a very satisfying way - I can honestly say that, because of this book, I have a better appreciation for how engineering methods are developed. Assuming you've studied differential equations and statics, then this book will be just right for you.

    All the problems have solutions in the back, which was very helpful. However, occasionally I ran into problems that I needed detailed solutions to, so you might need to see your professor about those. Also, I have a strong feeling that maybe 3-4 problems out of the ~100 that I did had wrong or oversimplified solutions- but I could be wrong, or I used different approximation methods. So not counting that tiny minority of aggravating problems, this book is both pleasantly informative and challenging, and it made me continue to like engineering, unlike some other books/classes I've used/taken.

    I bought this book as a supplement to my old school text because an engineer can never have enough good resouces in the working world. I chose it after much research as it was well recommended as THE BOOK to have. I have found it to be an excellent reference book. Most all the homework problems have answers in the back as a check. The publishing and editing qualities are excellent.

    The book is now twice the thickness of the 6th Edition book. This makes opening and keeping open the book much more difficult. Also the paper type chosen makes it difficult to turn the pages.

    I highly recommend keeping the sixth edition until they figure what is truly important to Structural/Mechanical Engineer.

    A very usefull reference book for the practising structural or mechanical engineer. However it could be significantly improved by some modernisation and rationalisation ie: removing references out-dated information and references from the 1920's and 1930's,etc. Also by standardising variables and equations, eg: the variable for the width of a section may be 'b' in one chapter 'd' in another, also 'tw' may represent flange thickness rather than web thickness, etc. The book examples are all in U.S. (lbs, feet) units, annoying the European (N, m) user, and may start on one page, then be interupted by 20 pages of tables before continuing on. So the general layout could do with being significantly improved.

    R&Y's publication, which I became aware of in 1986 is stillan amazing collection of engineering formulas in statics, stability,dynamics and thermal calculations. The IFE uses ANSYS FEA technologyesp. for complex geometries and nonlinear issues: but once in a whilewe appreciate R&Y's work to retain contact to quantities and forthe insight (wrt dimensioning) which interaction with formulas cangive.

    R&Y's text sections give much insight, the section onstrenght of materials terminology can be useful (learn - refresh) aswell as the brief immersion into experimental issues.

    If it wasn't for Hibbeler, and his awesome text books, engineering would be much more difficult. If you take a course that has a Hibbeler text book, you learn more from reading the text than what you do going to class

    Hibbeler offers an undergraduate text for the mechanical engineering student. The materials studied are solids, not fluids. The discussion starts with the simplest case of treating the bodies as totally rigid. Then we see a development of Newtonian mechanics, commencing with statics. No net velocities, in some obvious reference frame.

    But even in this simple case, Hibbeler shows the student how to find the balance of forces in such archetypal instances as beams.

    Later, he talks about how solids can to varying extents resist stresses. Be these longitudinal or torsional stresses. The resultant stress-strain relationships are a fundamental concept in mechanics, and the student should be able to follow the treatment quite adequately. ... Read more

    Absolutely essential book for anybody interested in stresses in notched bodies; structural analysts who like to use the 'back of the envelope', finite element analysts, fracture mechanicists; designers in aerospace, rail, heavy machinery, light machinery, medical devices, almost anything you can name. Book has been updated from the original; even if you have the original edition, this 2nd edition is well worth having for your engineering reference library.

    Compared to Callister and Ashby, and here's why.

    I agree with arthem, that this book doesn't go into enough detail for the person that wants to know "why". But it's not supposed to. It is by no means a chemistry book, so you have to have a SOLID chemistry background/understanding/feeling or you might have a hard time. It takes more of the "cookbook", need-to-know, macroscopic approach, whereas Callister is more of the theory. My first materials course used the Askeland book, and the third used Callister, and I found it effective to get the overview, then go into the "why" details later. My TA's and Prof's hated Askeland's style, but I don't think they appreciated what it brought to the table....understanding. Understand the concept (i.e. more carbon makes steel stronger), then learn why.

    Either of them are better than Ashby. I'd write a review on Ashby's books, but that means to be fair I'd have to dig them out, and I'm hoping rats ate them. Too bad too, my profs were rather fond of Ashby.

    I have to reserve a star for this book, because with a little more info it would be that much better. That, and I remember as a student, the problems were tough, tougher than the text prepared you for.

    Which reminds me, my exam questions frequently came out of this text in subsequent classes. Ironic since the prof's hated this book. hmm.

    I just completed a course in materials science using the 4th edition and have been appalled by the poor quality of the book (spiffy cover artwork aside).

    The book is full of generalizations that impart no significant understanding of the topics treated. Commonly, the book will simply assert that X causes Y without any physical justification as to WHY. Illustratively, when the book touches upon atomic structure, it uses a figure depicting the Bohr model of the atom without any reference to this being a simplification, nor any reference to the "actual" character of atomic orbitals.

    Additionally, the book is rife with poorly worded problems which are accompanied by answers that seeminly have no correspondence to their respective problems. I did not do a single problem set from the book without finding at least one problem where the answer was just plain wrong. A particularly amusing instance was the assignment of units of area to a dimensionless answer (and NO, the quantity wasn't right, either).

    STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS BOOK.

    The primary feature of Askeland's text is in the speed with which its sections can be read. Unfortunately, this is due to the lack of necessary detail. Difficult concepts are often glossed over, while simpler topics receive undue attention. The example problems don't seem as relevant as they might be, and certainly bear more strongly on the author's skills than on the student's.

    I may be unfairly comparing this book with Callister's "Materials Science and Engineering," but given the choice of either as a reference source, I would hesitate to choose Askeland. If you are stuck with the Askeland text for a course, but really need to understand material behavior, then invest in the Callister book as a backup - it will greatly enhance your understanding.

    The text starts with an introduction to crystal structures that is needlessly complicated and do not give the student any sort of explanation as to how crystal structures relate to the topics dicussed later in the text. The questions at the end of each chapter are considerably more difficult than the sample problems in the chapter, making it very tough to learn from if the student is trying to learn solely from the book. Orange highlights are hard to read.

    This book covers the brosd spectrum of material science one would expect from an intro level materials class. The book is not valuable as a reference because it has a poor index. The chapter review questions on design are very vague and open ended. If you are looking for a reference book, look elswhere. If you need this for a class then I hope you have a good teacher. ...     I had been searching through all of the sewing books I could find to learn more about the nature of fabric and fibers...and everything I could possibly want to know was here, and more. Absolutely fascinating. It is a textbook, but was written clearly enough that anyone with an interest in the area can easily understand it. I've been teaching classes to costumers and members of the local American Sewing Guild, who are equally impressed with the knowledge we got from this book.

    Cullity's expostion of x-ray diffraction is excellent, but the third edition, as noted by other reviewers, is missing all chapter specific references. If you're interested in this title, try to find a copy of the second edition.

    The 2nd Edition of "Elements of X-ray Diffraction" by B.D. Cullity ranks among the best introductory books ever written on the subject. When I bought this 3rd edition I hoped to obtain a book of similar standards. However, exchanging chapter titles (to less meaningful descriptors) and a mere renumbering of chapters and appendices (leaving nearly the complete body of the 2nd edition unchanged) was far from my expectations. I have sincere doubts, if the few brief sections added in this 3rd edition provide much useful information for a newcomer. Somehow, I feel they destroy the integrity of an old well-written text. Above all the publisher obviously did a poor job: The pages with "Chapter references" were completely lost somehow (they amounted to 9 pages in the 2nd edition) and are dearly missed whenever a reader wants to dwell a little bit deeper into the subject and use the citations provided in the text. If you want to go for a good introductory text on X-ray diffraction then choose the 2nd edition. Although based on knowledge of the sixties, and thus slightly old-fashioned, it still makes the point in a consistent and scholarly way. Let's hope the 2nd edition will be available for some time.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A BOOK ON X-RAY DIFFRACTION FROM AN OPERATIONAL STANDPOINT
    Cullity's book is, I believe, one of the most interesting books I've ever come across. Let me explain why...if you know diffraction at the level of the Ewald sphere, reciprocal lattice, point and space groups at least, you would realize that Dr. Cullity has very effectively accomplished the task of introducing the reader to almost all applied aspects of x-ray diffraction without ever mentioned the landmarks of the subject! In this book, you would barely find any word on real space vs. reciprocal space, their relationship by the Fourier Transform etc.; the necessary fundamentals are given at such an elementary level, that it requires barely any background beyond Phys 101. In all fairness, to reduce a very complex phenomenon to an easily understandible level certainly requires a lot of creativity as well as competence. The book's first two chapters efficiently summarize what a person needs to know as a bare minimum to later learn the specific techniques to analyze materials by x-ray diffraction. The remainder of the book is devoted to experimental methods which are very effectively presented and thoroughly discussed. To make the long story short, this book is for the handyman not for the scientist whose special interest might be in x-ray crystallography or x-ray diffraction. If you want to have an idea as to what kind of information can be obtained (ranging from lattice parameter determination to quantitative phase analysis) using x-ray diffraction to study of solids, then this book is for you... ...     The best thing about this book is the in-depth soultions to extra problems found only in the CD. So be sure to ask for the CD that accompanies the book; on top of that you get a solid fluid mechanics book that will support you through your fluid classes. A foundational understanding in fluids will also help in classes like Heat Transfer where most of the information is building on information learned in fluids. Good book, good examples, I like a lot of one of the author's (Okiishi) stuff.

    If you are cursed with a poor professor and are forced to use the book to teach yourself the material, you will be sorely dissapointed. First of all, the book is extremely wordy and very complicated to understand. You are given a ton of equations when they talk about a topic but you almost always find no use for the majority of them. I find the later chaptersespecially to be all math oriented and I found fewer and fewer real world problems to help study for the exams which had real world questions. In general, I was very dissapointed with the book.

    The study guide that accompanes the book is actually fairly decent and succint if not too short and they sometimes dont show important equations

    This book is excellent for the engineering student. I recommend it for the beginning student of fluid mechanics or for the advanced student wishing to refresh his/her knowledge of fluid mechanics. The collaborative effort by the authors produce a beautifully explained text. The material is clear and concise and the additional software included with the book is of great use for illustrating important concepts.

    The graphs and data provide a lot of good information but the book has several typos in key areas which lead to many hours of frustration. Also, I wish the book was offered in hardcover.I appreciate the desire to keep the costs low for the students, but a book like this will be life long resource for working engineers and I don't feel that the book will hold up well over the years with a soft cover.

    As a student in Materials Science and Engineering, this book has again and again been a priceless resource.It contains data and references which are clearly presented and precisely commented, and I often catch myself looking up the graphs or the appendices to find the solution to a particular problem.The Case Studies are very instructive and sometimes even amusing to read; they always reinforce a point previously made and give the reader a sense of history for the object in question (telephone, hair dryer, etc.).But the book doesn't stop at purely functional design; it also covers aesthetic aspects with the motto: "Good design works; excellent design also gives pleasure." This is a pleasing book.

    I'm a summer intern in an oil refinery and few of my tasks were to rerate exchangers, fin fan coolers, etc., and I didn't have any experience whatsoever! They don't teach at school how this equipment works in a process context and if you don't have a clue on what you're doing, this is the best book to refer to. It is very elementary, but at the same time, it can be very specific. It goes through fundamental steps for troubleshooting general processes as well as clear explanations of how most of the equipment in the industry work. Highly recommended at any level!

It simplifies and demystifies fundamental chemical engineering principals and effectively illustrates how theory applies to understanding the root cause/s of real world plant operating problems.

    Sharon Taberski really offers practical, useful, and inspriring information that all teachers need. If you are a new teacher she will provide useful ideas that can be used in all primary classrooms. If you are a seasoned teacher, she will re-energize you and provide new techniques to make teaching reading more interesting. Plus I love the fact that she stresses reading expository texts, this is truly essential in todays NCLB environment where standardized testing emphasizes expository texts. Sharon also does amazing things with her folders, you have to read it in order to truly appreciate it. I almost forgot to mention the reproducibles, even if you don't read the book, buy it for the reproducibles and the folder organizing ideas.

    I have read dozens of professional books, but the difference between Sharon's and the others was that I came back to hers three times. And even though I've been teaching over a dozen years, Sharon has helped to clarify even further the hows and whys of helping all kinds of learners to read and write. She certainly comes across as a very hard working, skilled and successful individual. And yet, as mentioned in the forward by her own principal, Sharon makes the whole process seem really simple. I can't wait to get back to work and adapt some of her ideas to my own as she herself encourages the reader to do. I'm so glad I found this one, and I'm sure you will be too!

    This book truly does speak to both the new as well as the seasoned teacher. What I appreciated the most was the author's ability to "cut to the chase" in the area of teaching reading. I am especially excited about using the reading folder she uses to store both teacher assessments and student responses to reading. The section on what the "other kids are doing" while the teacher is working with a guided group was extremely valuable as was her description of SSR. I knew something wasn't quite right with my class SSR time, and this book not only identified the problem but provided a logical and do-able alternative. Whether a teacher is new and needs the basics of teaching literacy or is experienced and needs help pulling out what are the best teaching practices, this book is superb!
