Brook's book is exceptional in the clarity of the writing, esp. in explaining key concepts that most engineers are fuzzy on. This book is great at giving engineers an intuitive feel for basic electromagnetics and how it relates to signal integrity and emi.

It's main strength (and to some it's major weakness) is that it avoids the mess of equations of better known books like Johnson's "High-Speed Digital Design". Brooks is also a good writer, and he writes very clearly. Don't get this book, if you already understand the subject, since it doesn't cover advanced material. However, this is essential reading for those who don't have a clue or for those (like me), who've memorized a lot of emi guidelines, without really understanding why they're necessary.

Given the book's title, the only area of improvement I can think of is a chapter or appendix on basic pcb manufacturing and terminology (buried vias, microvias, antipads, etc).

As an educator, lecturer and practicing designer I am given many books to read and make comment on. I find very few books that are able to bridge the chasm between the needs of a beginner learning about signal integrity and the needs of a professional desperate to solve design problems. This book is an excellent primer and reference for understanding the interrelationship between the board layout and the signal integrity problem. This book details design solutions to classic signal integrity problems and educates the novice in understanding the reasoning behind the solutions. There is a lot of nonsense being written about signal integrity and few people have the resources to filter out the chaff from hay. This book proves every principle presented with tested board layouts, demonstrated engineering principles, or documented laboratory results. Some people can see the world in formulas and some see the world pictorially. This book is rich in both forms of expressionism and its presentation will not exasperate the PCB designer who sees the world visually, or frustrate the engineer seeking equations for design representation. I've had to search numerous large University libraries for a copy of this book, and all copies seem to be perpetually checked out (some for months at a time). It isn't much of a surprise considering this is an excellent primer for microwave engineering and RF circuit design. The derivations are well laid out and the majority of each chapter's formulas are displayed in a nice tabular format every few pages.

It's a must have for any elec student (or physicist) that's interested in microwave engineering, RF circuit design and electromagnetic waves.

THE CHAPTERS ON FILTER ANALYSIS AND SYNTHESIS ARE WELL EXPAINED AND USEFUL FOR FIRST APROXIMATION DESIGNS. MODAL ANALYSIS TREATS BASIC ASPECTS OF UNIFORM WAVEGUIDES. I was first introduced to this book through my professor. After reading this book I had a very good understanding of the material: wave guides, networks, S-parameters, filters, impedence matching, and transmission lines. This book does it all. It is an excellent introductory to intermediate book on Microwave engineering. You can understand the book entirely without getting lost in theory. Pozar does a good job at not confusing the reader, and it provides some real world examples that help the user relate. I myself go to GA Tech, and I recommend any electrical engineering student who is interested in electromagnetics or RF engineering to buy this book. If only because the GA Tech Library only has one copy and it is always checked out.

This is a good microwave engineering book in general. It does not only provide derivations and equations, but also many real applications examples from Vector Network Analyzer (VNA) to different microwave cables (type N, SMA, BNC, etc.) And there are great sections on how to design microstrip components (directional couplers, hybrid combiner/splitter.)

I used this textbook when I took an undergraduate course in RF engineering. Currently, I am a graduate student in microwave engineering close to graduation. I have read many RF and EM books and by far this book is one of the best. Many textbooks provide lots of theories, equations and derivations, but few took the time to provide a lot of examples and for me examples is the easiest and fastest way to learn.

This text provides a GREAT amount of examples on how to build amplifiers with discrete components and show how to do it exactly in actual planar circuits (microstrip circuits.) From biasing, stability, simultaneous matching, to low noise amplifier design is covered. This book is also happen to be one of the few books that also include bilateral amplifier design techniques. Most other microwave amplifier books only consider unilateral techniques.

The last chapter is devoted to microwave frequency oscillator design technique including one and two port negative resistance and voltage controlled oscillator. Radio frequency oscillator design such as Colpitts, Hartley, and Clapp oscillator is also discussed.

I had this book because of the graduate course I took. Because the instructor followed the book so closely so I had the chance to thoroughly read through the book.

I was impressed with the examples the author gave in the book. They are all useful to show the readers how to design a microwave/RF amplification circuit through the gain circles, stability and noise circles.

Overall, I highly recommend this book for those people who design the wireless circuit at the board level.

I have used this for an Active class (at U-M) and found it very easy to comprehend the concepts presented. The book is not too meaty, but has plenty of detail to allow the user to follow derivations. Also covers advanced topics with some illustrative design examples. It is an excellent book that anyone doing LNAs, Oscillators or PAs needs to have to review.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beginning Microwave Amplifier Design - This is the Book!
I read the first edition, half the size, half the examples, and had to polish up on the calc. The second edition makes up for this and more. This is the definitive reference for all who are interested in microwave amplifier design with no previous experience. The Smith Chart approach follows the more academic derivations, which proves to be fast and easy. There is enough informatation to get one started on basic narrow band small signal gain, basic power configurations, and limited oscillator circuits. Buy this book before venturing on to more complex designs. You won't be disappointed.

He is a member of U.S. Commission B of URSI and a member of the Geophysical Society. Professor Leon Peters, Jr., was a professor at the Ohio State University but is now retired. From the early sixties he worked on, among many other things, RCS problems involving antennas and absorbers.

This book presents the complete derivation of the Periodic Method of Moments, which enables the reader to calculate quickly and efficiently the transmission and reflection properties of multi-layered Frequency Selective Surfaces comprised of either wire and/or slot elements of arbitrary shape and located in a stratified medium. However, it also gives the reader the tools to analyze multi-layered FSS's leading to specific designs of the very important Hybrid Radome, which is characterized by constant band width with angle of incidence and polarization. Further, it investigates in great detail bandstop filters with large as well as narrow bandwidth (dichroic surfaces). It also discusses for the first time, lossy elements used in producing Circuit Analog absorbers. Finally, the last chapter deals with power breakdown of FSS's when exposed to pulsed signals with high peak power.

The approach followed by most other presentations simply consists of expanding the fields around the FSS, matching the boundary conditions and writing a computer program. While this enables the user to obtain calculated results, it gives very little physical insight and no help in how to design actual multi-layered FSS's. In contrast, the approach used in this title analyzes all curves of desired shapes. In particular, it discusses in great detail how to produce radomes made of FSS's located in a stratified medium (Hybrid Radomes), with constant band width for all angles of incidence and polarizations. Numerous examples are given of great practical interest. More specifically, Chapter 7 deals with the theory and design of bandpass radomes with constant bandwidth and flat tops. Examples are given for mono-, bi- and tri-planar designs. Chapter 8 deals with bandstop filters with broad as well as narrow bandwidth. Chapter 9 deals with multi-layered FSS of lossy elements, namely the so-called Circuit Analog Absorbers, designed to yield outstanding absorption with more than a decade of bandwidth.

I gained a lot of insights from this book. It methodically treats RF power amplifier in a way that develops understanding of the fundamentals. I particulary like the explanation on the Load-Pull Countours/Theory (Ch 2), Matching Network Design for Reduced Conduction Angle PAs(Ch 3), and the Two-Tone Envelope Analysis (Ch 7). In short, thanks to this book, the way I look at PAs has been transformed: from nebulous beliefs and assumptions to insights and better understanding. An excellent source of information. Mr Cripps very articulatly reviews at all classes of RF power amplification, and explains theoretical design principles and suggests improvements. His 'Load-pull' technique method is already widely used in design of PA's and serves as a good design aid. Although I would have liked him to go deeper into 'high-efficiciency PA techniques, spending more time on 'Chierix, Khan and Doherty methods. His book is the best reference on PA's I have seen in the last decade, I could not put it down. I look forward to his next book ... Read more

These books were written by two well-known lectures in the RF/MW field with many years of teaching experience. Their goal was to provide a practical exposition of circuit design in the RF/MW field that appealed to students, academicians, and design engineers. They certainly succeeded. The reader will find that fundamental and advanced principles are properly explained with emphasis in CAD techniques. While the mathematical manipulations are kept to a minimum, the associated results are well referenced and extensively discussed.

Volume I:
This volume focuses mainly on passive circuits and systems. The first two chapters provide a review of RF/MW circuit fundamentals. The emphasis is placed on topics related to RF/MW circuits, such a resonance, series and parallel conversions, quality factor, power transfer, transmission lines, reflection coefficients, and mismatch loss. Chapter 3 describes several radio systems and illustrates how the system's specifications relate to the various individual components. Receiver's characteristics are discussed, such as receiver noise and sensitivity, nonlinearities and dynamic range, and automatic control. The chapter includes the analysis of a CDMA handset from a system point of view. Chapters 4 and 5 describe the use of S parameters, the Smith chart, impedance matching networks, and bandwidth considerations. Many impedance matching design examples are provided with their associated frequency responses. Both lumped and microstrip matching circuits are considered. Chapter 6 shows the use of CAD programs for RF/MW circuit design. This chapter underlines the major key areas in CAD, such as linear circuit analysis, electromagnetic simulation, tuning, synthesis, optimization, non-linear simulations, and statistical techniques. Passive component models are discussed in Chapter 7, which include RLC components, distributed components, transformers, crystals, dielectric resonators, and surface acoustic wave resonators. The authors show how actual parts affect the behavior of a design, and how to account for them in the final product. Chapter 8 gives an overview of passive filters and the techniques used for their design in the RF/MW area. Such topics as the Richards' transformation, Norton transformations, and Kuroda identities are discussed. Chapter 9 is an overview of the major differences and similarities between RF and high-speed digital systems.

Volume II:
This volume focuses mainly on active circuits and systems. The volume begins with a discussion of linear RF/MW amplifier design techniques. The first two chapters deal with stability conditions, stability circles and the various design techniques for transducer gain, operating power gain, and associated gain. Material in low-noise amplifier design and broadband techniques is included, as well as dc considerations. Chapter 3 discusses the modeling of the actual devices (such as BJT, GaAs, HETM, etc). Chapter 4 deals with nonlinear CAD simulations techniques, and their uses. Time and frequency domain methods are discussed and compared. A good discussion of the harmonic balance method is given, including a section on harmonic balance simulation of oscillators. Chapter 5 considers the topic of power transistor amplifiers. The categories of amplifiers are presented and the topics of bias considerations, distortion reduction and predistortion are included. The chapter includes a detailed power amplifier design. Oscillators are discussed in Chapter 6, with emphasis on the negative resistance design approach and CAD simulations. A section is devoted to the description of phase noise. Several design examples are included. An interesting example uses a ceramic resonator, another example involves a crystal resonator, and one example deals with a Colpitts VCO using a varactor diode. Chapter 7 deals with mixers and frequency multipliers. The authors discuss diodes and transistor mixers and their effect on the overall system. The final chapter gives an overview of several wireless systems.

The material covered in these two volumes extends from the basic to the advance. The texts are suitable for short courses in RF/MW circuits, since they provide a comprehensive description of the RF/MW circuit design field. They are also suitable for a course (or courses) at the senior/graduate level in the RF/MW field. The books strongly emphasize design and the use of CAD techniques. Enough information is provided in their CAD examples that the simulations can easily be implemented with one of the major CAD programs available for RF/MW circuits.

These texts contain a tremendous amount of information for RF/MW circuit designers. Especially, for those working in wireless communications. Discrete design is covered in detail-from the individual component specification to the overall system performance. The presentation is clear and well organized. It certainly makes for a good addition to the designer's library.

There is so much information for a practicing engineer;it will take six months to absorb the techniques described. I finally understand what causes oscillation and how I can prevent it when it shows up unexpectedly.
