4-0 out of 5 stars Uneven - but otherwise thorough
While I found the book to be excellent in many areas, I found the treatment of certain topics...uneven. Sometimes oversimplified; sometimes unnecessarily complex. The topic I was most interested in learning about, leak volumetric calculations, was given a very brief treatment (less than a page) - while other topics of very limited appeal (to me) had full chapters devoted - such as economics.

All in all, however, the book is an excellent repository of pipeline calculations, considerations, and evaluations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Waste of money
The book is unpractical for the working engineer and the mathematics is simplified calculus which is not understandable to the average practicing engineer, but seems to be in favor of academic types. This is not a book for someone who wants to learn why production equipment works. The chapter on multiphase flow is its only saving grace, but any cheap paper on the subject will say as much. I would recomened the OGCI books on Production Technology. Way cheaper...way better...

Book Description

The Caspian Sea contains the world's largest amount of untapped oil and gas resources. It is estimated that there might be as much as 100 billion barrels of crude oil in the former Soviet republics of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan alone. Using the concept of the "Great Game" that Rudyard Kipling immortalized in his novel Kim, Lutz Kleveman has discovered a New Great Game raging in the region, a modern variant of the 19th century clash of imperial ambitions of Great Britain and czarist Russia. Only this time the stakes are higher. Desperate to wean itself from dependence on the powerful OPEC cartel, the United States is now pitted in a struggle against Russia and China, as all three nations compete for dominance in the Caspian region and access to its resources and pipeline routes. Complicating the playing field are transnational energy corporations with their own agendas and brash new entrepreneurs who have taken control after the collapse of the Soviet Union. Based on extensive research and travel in the regions, The New Great Game is a gripping narrative and a savvy analysis of the power struggle for the world's remaining energy resources. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A reporter's view of an old geopolitical game
Anyone who is familiar with their history and of the "Great Game" played out in Central Asia between Russia and Great Britain will take heart that the game is back in play, albeit with a new cast of players. Today the precious commodity is oil, and in light of the demise of the former Soviet Union, a whole new cast of characters are activily engaged in competing for influence and the associated riches that will come with control of the oil resources.
One new facet of this game, that Kleveman highlights is the role multinational oil corporations play in the game. Whether you adhere to many of Kleveman's suggestions that much of what is done in this region is done at Big Oil's behest is subject to debate.
The book is well written..although I did note some factual errors, particularly with some of the military terminology that he uses. Book is very reminiscent of Eastward to Tartary...but overall a good read for anyone interested in the realpolitik of Central Asia.

5-0 out of 5 stars The New "Really" Great Game
Lutz Kleveman's "The New Great Game" is the best primer on Central Asia I've read. Kleveman gives the reader all the history, politics, geography, current status and prophecy that is essential to understand the region. This book should be read by every policymaker -- as well as featured in every college history or political science course taught. It is that good! I have read all of Tom Friedman's books; all of Robert Kaplan's books, two of Ahmed Rashid's; Mary Anne Weaver, Akbar Ahmed, Christopher Kremmer, Anne Nivat, Anna Politkovskaya, and Peter Hopkirk's original "Great Game." Save yourself the time and expense; they've got nothing over on this book -- it is the must read of them all! If Kaplan's "Balkan Ghosts" educated a President and a generation on the Balkans, Kleveman's "New Great Game" will do the same for Central Asia.

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but........
I found the first few chapters of this book quite interesting and well worth a read, I was however a little disapointed as the book went on.

The last two chapters on Afgahnistan and Pakistan to be more or less fluff, as well as one or two other chapters that I felt the writer was just writing filler.

Also I thought there would be alot more researched infomation, but it is very light on.

Over all, a very easy read, some intersting bits and some stats on oil in the Central Asian region, but not as much as you would like.

2-0 out of 5 stars THIS JUST IN: OIL IS IMPORTANT
Travelling through Central Asia, Lutz Kleveman has compiled a series of essays describing the power struggle that has been taking place in the region over the allocation of the oil and gas resources locked under the surface of the volatile area. Kleveman refers to this as the 'New Great Game'. This is a direct reference to the original Great Game played by Russia and Britain over one hundred years ago for control of Central Asia's access to the riches of India and China.

Kleveman contends that the New Great Game's players consist of Russia, the United States, China, Iran, and Pakistan. The prize this time is control of the oil and gas reserves and the pipelines that will transport the product to market. The various endpoints for these pipelines include Turkey, Russia, Iran, Pakistan, and China. While each of the non-American players obviously prefers their own country as the chosen destination, the United States prefers a Mediterranean location on the coast of our NATO ally Turkey.

Kleveman visited several countries for this book including Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, Pakistan, Iran, China, etc. The main gist of his talks in these various countries is that everybody is accusing everybody else of nefarious, underhanded dealings in their quest for oil. And of course, none of these people will impugn their own or their country's motives likewise.

The main point that I picked up from "The New Great Game" is that most of the people in this region are decidedly uninformed about what the United States is all about. There are of course the lunatic conspiracy theories about the US government being responsible for September 11 and that we were simply using it as an excuse to get at their oil. Even more than that though there seems to be, at least according to the people Kleveman spoke with, a majority opinion that, even if Al Qaeda was behind September 11, the United States is only using its war or terrorism as a pretext to ensconce itself in the region to control the eventual pipeline flows. This is particularly odd coming from a region of the world where blood feuds still rage on unchecked. You would think that they, more so than most other peoples in the world, would understand our desire to revenge this attack.

If Kleveman had stopped here he would have had an average, maybe even good, book. Unfortunately he decided to put his two cents in regarding America's foreign policy. I do believe that we are pursuing a very dangerous course in this region of the world. Backing dictators and warlords instead of true reformers is not a way to create a stable, peaceful region (as if we haven't reaped enough of those sowed seeds already). Kleveman however bald-facedly accuses the United States of engaging in war for oil.

Folks like Kleveman who accuse the US of this are missing a nuanced part of this subject. The point is not that we went to war in Iraq FOR oil but BECAUSE OF oil. And yes, there is a big difference. To go to war FOR something means that is your primary motive. To go to war BECAUSE OF something means that it is an underlying reason.

Consider this: would the US have ever gone to war against Iraq (even in 1991) if Iraq did not have all that oil sitting underneath it? The answer to that is no. However, if Iraq did not have oil, it likely never would have become a problem in the first place. And, even if it did, we would have been inclined to ignore it since a vital interest of ours would not have been threatened. A free, stable Iraq is in our interest specifically because it is a potentially large supplier of inexpensive oil.

To say that we are in Iraq FOR oil is to say that we are uninterested in stabilizing the country. To say that we are in Iraq BECAUSE OF oil is to say that we are very interested in stabilizing the country (even if we have done a lousy job of it so far). While our methods may be wrong our intentions are just. This is a point that Kleveman drastically misses and which harms his overall work.

Book Description

The gas turbine is a power plant that produces a great amount of energy for its size and weight and thus has found increasing service in the past 20 years in the petrochemical industry and utilities throughout the world. The gas turbine's compactness, weight, and multiple fuel applications make it a natural power plant for offshore platforms.

This second edition is not only an updating of technology, which has seen a great leap forward in the 1990s, but also a rewriting of various sections to better answer concerns about emissions, efficiency, mechanical standards and codes, and new materials and coatings. At a time when energy costs are high, this important handbook expertly guides those seeking optimum use of each unit of energy supplied to a gas turbine.

In this book, the author has assimilated the subject matter (including diverse views) into a comprehensive, unified treatment of gas turbines. The author discusses the design, fabrication, installation, operation, and maintenance of gas turbines. The intent of this book is to serve as a reference text after it has accomplished its primary objective of introducing the reader to the broad subject of gas turbines. Thus it is of use to both students of the subject and similarly to professionals as a desk reference in their daily lives.

4-0 out of 5 stars Tony Hodges comes clean
Tony Hodges has finally seen the light regarding Angola. A known MPLA sympathiser, his book shows that there is no right or wrong in Angola. Both the MPLA and UNITA are fighting a 30 year civil war for power. Angola's natural resources provide the monetary resources to continue the war.

Hodges does an excellent job in describing Angola's vast natural resources, the allocation of those resources, and the fraud and corruption associated with the resources. His charts and tables are of particular value to an Angolan scholar.

He also details how UNITA thrives by continuing to hold some diamond mining areas and how they export the stones for funds to oil their military machine.

However, Hodges best contribution is his explanation of how the MPLA government spends billions on defense while the Angolan people starve. Much of the money spent lines the pockets of MPLA generals, and politicians.

My question would be if the MPLA regime is so corrupt would a UNITA victory be more disastrous? ... Read more

Book Description

"Riveting. [Crude] is an informative, startling, and necessary book."-Roy Morrison, author of Ecological Democracy

Crude is the unexpurgated story of oil, from the circumstances of its birth millions of years ago to the spectacle of its rise as the indispensable ingredient of modern life. In addition to fueling our SUVs and illuminating our cities, crude oil and its byproducts fertilize our produce, pave our roads, and make plastic possible. "Newborn babies," observes author Sonia Shah, "slide from their mothers into petro-plastic-gloved hands, are swaddled in petro-polyester blankets, and are hurried off to be warmed by oil-burning heaters." The modern world is drenched in oil; Crude tells how it came to be. A great human drama emerges, of discovery and innovation, risk, the promise of riches and the power of greed.

From the beginning, crude oil has inspired awe and sparked violence. In the early days of this fascinating saga of man and mineral, the mysterious sap was used to tell the future (from the shapes drops made in water) and to fight wars (as liquid fire flung at the enemy). Author Shah infuses recent chapters of the story with equal drama, through chronicles of colorful modern-day characters-from the hundreds of Nigerian women who stormed a Chevron plant, to a monomaniacal scientist for whom life is the pursuit of this earthblood and its elusive secret.

From the billions of microscopic plankton collecting on the ancient ocean floor to the occupation of Iraq, Shah moves masterfully between scientific, economic, political and social analysis. Crude captures the many sides of the indispensable mineral we someday may have to find a way to live without.

Sonia Shah is the editor of the critically acclaimed Dragon Ladies: Asian American Feminists Breathe Fire and Between Fear and Hope: A Decade of Peace Activism. She is a former editor at South End Press and Nuclear Times magazine.

2-0 out of 5 stars Marginally acceptable for non-technical people, else, poor.
Ms. Chambers, the author, was at Pennwell Publishing (natural gas & power industry publisher) at the time of this book's publication. By formal training, she's a journalist.

This book, as I read it, appeared to me to be a mosiac of just snippets and facts that may have been accreted over her publishing career, with perhaps, a most limited appreciation, true feel and understanding of the natural gas and power industry. Translation: not that there has to be a "passion" about this, or any industry, but if she does harbor one, as a genuine interest and concern, regrettably, it did not come across in this book.

My interpretation is as an engineer. But still, and even without such a degree of discerning scrutiny, the author could
have been provided much better checks to copy before it was published. The book's flow is somewhat checkered: It could have been assembled much better with both logic, how it all fits together, full comprehensive scope, and not least - data and charts given. When we look at graphs without telling us what the vertical axis is (no units, but dimensionless numbers of what?), what are we looking at?

For the non-techie, you may get something out of this book. For those that are really not that right-hemisphere and like specifics, keep away; you'll end up somewhat dizzy.

Shame, I expected lots more and it's still a very rich subject area/topic for the right work to pull it all together.

Chambers covers a lot of material in enough detail to promote an understanding of the broad issues involved in natural gas and its relation to an increasingly deregulated electric power market -- but not in so much detail that a reader new to the subject will be lost and confused. Certain topics are treated a bit too roughly, a good example being the discussion of deregulation, which skims the surface of the government's complicity in impeding the NG industry's progress and doesn't frame the issues as clearly as it could. The book's editing is not the best; there are spelling and grammar errors, and some of the graphics are unclear. Chambers' writing, however, is generally concise and lucid, and her topics are on target. The glossary is helpful. Altogether a book that does what it seems intended to do. Now, if Pennwell could just sharpen the editing and bring the price down a bit. . . ... Read more

Book Description

Could there exist, deep within the earth's crust, a second biosphere--composed of very primitive, thermophilic (heat-loving) bacteria, and containing more living matter than the entire surface of the planet? This radical idea, which initially met with skepticism when it was first proposed by the author in the early 1980s, is now supported by a growing body of evidence.

The implications are astonishing. The theory proposes answers to often-asked questions about life on other planets and the origins of surface life on earth. Is the deep biosphere where life originated? Can Mars and other seemingly barren planets contain deep biospheres? Is there yet another--deeper, hotter--biosphere within the earth, based on silicon instead of carbon?

In the first book on this very controversial and intriguing theory, pioneering physicist Thomas Gold explores the likelihood of a subterranean biosphere, one that exists in a gaseous atmosphere at very high temperature and pressure, and survives on chemical energy--hydrocarbons. This stunning book offers new insights into the origins of life, the origins of natural gas and petroleum, and the distribution of life in the universe. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bold Look At Earth Processes
I am very impressed with 'The Deep Hot Biosphere." Dr. Gold (an iconoclast, it seems) boldly rethinks some very basic assumptions about the formation, and role of, oil, coal, and natural gas. These are not, he says, (with the exception of some soft coals & peat) produced by decaying vegetable matter and dead sea creatures but are pre-existent in the earth and modified by such geological processes as heat, pressure, and chemical oxidation. Some vested interests will not like his conclusions.

His theory of earthquakes, too, flies in the face of conservative paradigms and is a useful adjunct to explain those earthquakes that traditional theories have difficulty with (such as the devestating New Madrid quakes of 1811-12.) The book looks at the very interesting evidence of bacteria happily living deep in the earth's crust, possibly larger in biomass than all above-ground life put together. Was this where life on earth began? And if it did, what's to stop similar organisms from living on other planets, even in our own solar system? Throughout, the book is, refreshingly, clearly written and not at all plodding or condescending.

5-0 out of 5 stars the most important book on LIFE since Origin of the Species
The Deep Hot Biosphere When asked to rank the single most important books on LIFE on Earth this century, I would immediately name Vernadsky: The Biosphere / Schroedinger: What is Life / Monod: Chance and Neccessity / Gold: The Deep Hot Biosphere. What F. Capra has done for PHYSICS, Gold does for BIOLOGY ......... the Ying of Surface Life (which we all know about) has now been juxtaposed by the Yang ...... the Deep Hot Biosphere! Stew Kauffmann - move over! "Our place in the Universe" is far less mysterious that you have made us believe ........ Mandelbrodt and Pak only NOW (after Gold that is .......) really start to make sense. C.D's "warm little pond" has channelled all of our thinking into a direction where Urey & Miller were the "best thing going" ............ NOW we can free our minds and look towards a future where Big Oil is not going to frighten us and Big Government is not going to be able to "milk" us dry. BRAVO!!!! This book should primarily be a MUST for science teachers .........

5-0 out of 5 stars Gold's Love Oil
Multinational oil companies use microbes that feed on oil to break up oil spills by digesting oil. Evidently the fossil fuel myth is just for public consumption. Gold tells us in this book that Vietnam's White Tiger oil field is producing oil from basement rock, and that hundreds of holes have been drilled down to oil and gas found in basement rock in Russia(Tatarstan), Canadian Shield, and Swedish Siljan Shield.

Even if it is at this time difficult to produce oil or gas from basement rock in most instances, due to the depth of wells, the discovery of oil welling up from below sedimentary rock frees us from the fossil fuel myth. Reserve calculations for oil and gas fields are based on the false assumption that those resources are fixed pockets of fossil fuel, rather than waystations for oil and gas welling up from below. We can stop cannibalizing each other for oil according to the fossil fuel propaganda, and we should not allow gasoline to be priced as if in blood.

Fascinating reading...microbes freeing oxygen from iron oxide(leaving magnetite, marking accessible oil for us) so they can oxidize petroleum as food, cells surviving at temperatures high enough to make steam because steam cannot form at such pressure.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
I cannot say enough good things about this book. It is not just a window into the Earth, but a window into the sources of organic compounds in carbonaceous meteorites, the early history of "Fox Holes" in the asteroid parent bodies, even the conditions on (and under) Mars - to say nothing of Europa, Ganymede, Enceladus, Titan, and beyond. Some of his ideas are downright creepy, but as every one of his colleagues will attest, during his lifetime Thomas Gold has been right about too many creepy things to ever be dismissed out of hand.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hot Deep Biosphere
HDB is the most radical earth changing theory since Velikovsky brot 'cataclysmic evolution' out of the fringe, grounding it with vast scientific data, as Gold has done here. Do you recall the U$ energy crises in mid '70s when "Limits to Growth" predicted a run-out of gas/oil in 10-20 yrs. given the rates of consuming it then. Well we didn't run out, while using 'fossil fuels'up even faster, co-creating the 'overheating earth weather patterns now! So Gold is likely correct, the earth is making oil/gas still now! plus other strange subteranian patterns. Some cavers know this, but don't tell or bring up evidence, because its too strange to believe; like billion year old coins from deep in caves/mines. I love these weird earth energy activities. michealspun@yahoo.com ... Read more
