I'm a summer intern in an oil refinery and few of my tasks were to rerate exchangers, fin fan coolers, etc., and I didn't have any experience whatsoever! They don't teach at school how this equipment works in a process context and if you don't have a clue on what you're doing, this is the best book to refer to. It is very elementary, but at the same time, it can be very specific. It goes through fundamental steps for troubleshooting general processes as well as clear explanations of how most of the equipment in the industry work. Highly recommended at any level!

As a licensed professional engineer and consultant in the Houston, TX area, I found this to be an excellent and useful book. It simplifies and demystifies fundamental chemical engineering principals and effectively illustrates how theory applies to understanding the root cause/s of real world plant operating problems.

The Lieberman's also do a fine job of making the book interesting to read through the use of non-process plant related anecdotes. These anecdotes help the reader understand the principals presented by drawing upon experiences and situations common to everyday life.

From a Safety Manager perspective, I found the descriptions of the incidents too brief. If you are looking for something with detailed incident information and corrective actions, presented in the form of a story, look somewhere else.

The book is a mix of economical and technical aspects of chemical engineering design; so is good for graduates starting the career or for practicing engineer interested in economical aspects of plant design. For me the good companion book for these engineer is "Conceptual design of chemical processes" by J. Douglas or better but out-of-print "Applied Project Engineering and Management" by E. Ludwig.

The Fourth Edition is an advancement over the 2nd edition, the one I "grew up" with. Instead of jumping to cost preparation and option selection, then on to preliminary design, it starts out an excellent introduction, basic requirements for OSHA and EPA (including a good section on HAZOPs), a review of computer-aided design, then on to cost preparation and the rest. After option selection, the authors provide a good solid section on process optimization. This is a new area in the text and well worth reading. All in all, a current, concise design book, ideal for the student or the old hand.

I never had much use for this text while in school. As with most subjects Senior year, we went too fast to appreciate it. With the years, however, I had cause to appreciate Peters & Timmerhaus. It is packed full of rules-of-thumb for preparations of cost estimates and comparing options. Although it is not the best place to end an economic investigation, it is the best place to start one.

After reading the first few pages, I knew that I've finally found the "one". I have collection of books about the subject from different authors and as a piping designer, this is the most useful reference book. In this industry specialization is rare. Engineers need a place to start so that they can get the language right before proceeding to the internet and vendors. This is a good resource book. It provides a holistic system, with the essential elements and logical links between the elements, for management of hazards and risks of process plants.

Chapter 13 and 14 are extremely useful especially, when the basic concepts, methods and techniques presented in previous chapters are explained.

Chapter 13 provides a 'short cut', in terms of time saving, to the exposure of typical causes of and lesion learnt from thoughtfully selected incidents.

Chapter 14 provides a number of case studies and work examples to further demonstrate how hazards can be identified, assessed (qualitatively or quantitatively) and mitigated, using the methods and techniques described in the book.
This book will not only be useful to the professionals who have already worked in management of hazards and risks but also to those who wish to start a career in this area.

For years, the residents of Diamond, Louisiana, lived with an inescapable acrid, metallic smell -- the "toxic bouquet" of pollution -- and a mysterious chemical fog that seeped into their houses. They looked out on the massive Norco Industrial Complex: a maze of pipelines, stacks topped by flares burning off excess gas, and huge oil tankers moving up the Mississippi. They experienced headaches, stinging eyes, allergies, asthma, and other respiratory problems, skin disorders, and cancers that they were convinced were caused by their proximity to heavy industry. Periodic industrial explosions damaged their houses and killed some of their neighbors. Their small, African-American, mixed-income neighborhood was sandwiched between two giant Shell Oil plants in Louisiana's notorious Chemical Corridor. When the residents of Diamond demanded that Shell relocate them, their chances of success seemed slim: a community with little political clout was taking on the second-largest oil company in the world. And yet, after effective grassroots organizing, unremitting fenceline protests, seemingly endless negotiations with Shell officials, and intense media coverage, the people of Diamond finally got what they wanted: money from Shell to help them relocate out of harm's way. In this book, Steve Lerner tells their story.

Around the United States, struggles for environmental justice such as the one in Diamond are the new front lines of both the civil rights and the environmental movements, and Diamond is in many ways a classic environmental-justice story: a minority neighborhood, faced with a polluting industry in its midst, fights back. But Diamond is also the history of a black community that goes back to the days of slavery. In 1811, Diamond (then the Trepagnier Plantation) was the center of the largest slave rebellion in United States history. Descendants of these slaves were among the participants in the modern-day Diamond relocation campaign.

I think some explanations are needed on its title. According to the preface, the book was first published under the name of

* Cheaper, Safer Plants or Wealth and Safety at Work(1985)

and extended to the new title

* Plant Design for Safety - A User-Friendly Approach(1991)

and 70% expanded to the latest title

* Process Plants: A Handbook for Inherently Safer Design(1998).

The Aamzon's title may not be updated, but I got the latest one. It's slim(about 200 pages) and very readable. ... Read more
