Book Description

A significant step forward in the world of earth observation was made with the development of imaging spectrometry. Imaging spectrometers measure reflected solar radiance from the earth in many narrow spectral bands. Such a spectroscopical imaging system is capable of detecting subtle absorption bands in the reflectance spectra and measure the reflectance spectra of various objects with a very high accuracy. As a result, imaging spectrometry enables a better identification of objects at the earth surface and a better quantification of the object properties than can be achieved by traditional earth observation sensors such as Landsat TM and SPOT. The various chapters in the book present the concepts of imaging spectrometry by discussing the underlying physics and the analytical image processing techniques. The second part of the book presents in detail a wide variety of applications of these new techniques ranging from mineral identification, mapping of expansive soils, land degradation, agricultural crops, natural vegetation and surface water quality.CD-ROM included: This volume contains a CD-ROM with hyperspectral remote sensing datasets as well as full color images of a selection of illustrations which are printed as black and white figures in the book. ... Book Description

The vast reduction in size and power consumption of CMOS circuitry has led to a large research effort based around the vision of ubiquitous networks of wireless communication nodes. The wireless devices are usually designed to run on batteries. However, as the networks increase in number and the devices decrease in size, the replacement of depleted batteries is not practical. Furthermore, a battery that is large enough to last the lifetime of the device would dominate the overall system size, and thus is not very attractive. There is clearly a need to explore alternative methods of powering these small communication nodes. This book, therefore, focuses on potential "ambient" sources of power that can be scavenged or harvested and subsequently used to run low power electronics and wireless transceivers.A wide range of potential power sources are briefly explored. Based on a comparison of these many potential sources, commonly occurring vibrations was chosen as an attractive, and little explored, power source. Models for different types of power converters using both electrostatic and piezoelectric conversion mechanisms have been developed. The models have been validated by testing prototypes driven at vibrations similar to those found in many industrial and commercial building environments. Finally, integration of a piezoelectric generator, power circuit, and custom design radio transceiver is demonstrated.Power sources are becoming a bottleneck to the widespread deployment of wireless sensor networks. This work reviews many potential alternative sources of ambient power that can be scavenged. Vibration to electricity converters are explored in great detail, and based on studies and experiments, are shown to be an attractive power source in many applications.Energy Scavenging for Wireless Sensor Networks with Special Focus on Vibrations will be of interest to researchers and professionals in the areas of wireless electronics, smart structures and MEMS as well as power electronics. ... Book Description

The extraction of thematic information from remotely sensed images is a key area of research into the applications of remote sensing data. Standard methods of classificationbased on similarity and probability measures, such as the maximum likelihood procedure, are now being superseded by neural/connectionist and artificial intelligence algorithms. Concepts such as fuzzy decision rules and soft classification are extending the traditional boundaries of pattern recognition. This book provides a survey of these new methods, together with a guide to the essential preliminaries such as sampling methods, orthogonal transforms, feature selection, and accuracy assessment. Methods of quantifying texture using fractals and other techniques, of estimating contexts using Markov random fields, and incorporating these features in multi-source classifications are described in the later part of the book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A solid, well balanced and quite readable text for RS study
I was fortunate enough to attend Gareth Rees' course, for which this book was initially written. As a student that always needed to get things through the brain more than once for it to stick, I can thoroughly recommend this book. It is well written, handles the mathematical treatments with enough detail to be easy to follow (but it does assume a fairly strong undergraduate mathematical background). Excellent description of Synthetic Aperture Radar techniques and written in a style that makes it quite fresh for what is fundamentally a course text book.

Book Description

Spatial analysis is where the GIS rubber hits the road, where all the hard work of digitizing, building a database, checking for errors, and dealing with the details of projections and coordinate systems finally pays off in results and better decisions. But spatial analysis has often seemed inaccessible to many users--too mathematical to understand, too difficult to implement, and lacking in good textbooks and guides. Here at last is the ideal book, written by Andy Mitchell and based on ESRI's vast experience with applications of spatial analysis to a host of real problems. The book covers every area of GIS application, so readers will find examples that relate directly to their own concerns, whether they be in hydrology, transportation, or regional planning. The organization is intuitive, with sections on all of the major forms of simple spatial analysis.

This book will appeal to GIS users in all areas of GIS application. It will be invaluable reading for people encountering GIS for the first time, and wanting to see where its real power lies. It will make an excellent textbook for courses in GIS in high schools, community colleges, and undergraduate programs, and as a supplement for practical work.Although, the best way to learn what GIS Analysis can do for your projects is to use it.So buy this book and begin getting results and making better decisions.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Great Starting Point
You have to take this book for what it is. An extremely basic, starting point for any would-be GIS Analyst. The book contains wonderful examples of how one may use GIS to analyze "real world problems" using both raster and vector models. This book in essence shows people how GIS can be used to analyze problems, without specifically showing them how to analyze problems. I would recommend this book for people who are new to GIS analysis and IT managers who's departments use GIS. While this book will not demonstrate how GIS problems are solved, it illustrates what kinds of problems can be solved using a GIS, any GIS. This book, although it is published by a software company, is not a software manual by any stretch of the imagination (and it was not intended to be one). The examples can be replicated on any commercially available GIS package.

Note: Do not buy this book if you are an advanced GIS user, you probably already know most of what is contained in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good 2nd Book for GIS beginners
After reading "GIS for Everyone", which shows you how to do some basic things with GIS, this book shows you what to do. There's an ample supply of examples in this book, although somewhat repetative. The extensive use of color was surprising given the relatively low cost of this book compared to similar titles. Some of the GIS images are quite small and a small reading magnifier will help seeing the differences that, for example, changes in cell size can make in GIS images.

This book helps you make the transition from making maps to doing GIS analysis.

Book Description

The aims of the book - written by a practising engineer for practising engineers - are to provide an understanding of the basic principles of sonar and, to develop formulae and "rules of thumb" for sonar design and performance analysis. Ashley Waite uses his long experience in the design, trials and performance analysis of sonar systems to provide practical guidance and solutions to problems encountered by sonar engineers and technicians.

The books divides into the following parts:

  • Equipment parameters: the motion of sound in an elastic medium; definitions of sound intensity and source level; the use of projector arrays to increase the source level; the use of hydrophone arrays to improve the signal to noise ratio of a wanted sound.
  • The propagation of sound in the sea and the backgrounds to detection: spreading and absorption losses; propagation modes and simple modelling; noise and reverberation; the sonar equations
  • Practical sonar systems: passive and active sonar systems; passive broadband, narrowband, intercept and communications (as a special case of intercept) sonars; active sonars for the detection of submarines, mines and torpedoes.
Sonar for Practising Engineers, third edition, covers all aspects of sonar systems and has extensive worked examples. No prior knowledge of sonar is assumed and the physical principles and mathematics will be readily understood by engineers, technicians and students of underwater acoustics. New to this edition, are end-of-chapter exercises and solutions for self assessment and training. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A compulsary read for anyone working with sonar
There are many myths regarding sonar, in both civilian and military applications. The perhaps best known ones are provided by Tom Clancy in his book/movie "The Hunt for Red October". While sonarman Jones and his $40 million computer make great additions to that story, they have little to do with reality.

This book, on the other hand, has everything to do with reality. It describes the working principles of sonar in as simple terms as possible. The explanations and mathematics are kept on a level where any electrical engineer can follow it, and the material is still general enough so that even renowned researchers on underwater acoustics can learn from it.

To me, one of the greatest assets with this book is that it so clearly shows

- what real-life sonars do
- how they do it
- why they do it like that
- what problems are encountered

This is information that is hard to come by elsewhere, and give rise to all sorts of speculations when lacking. The book is as relevant to navy sonars as civilian ones. ... Read more
