Book Description

Closely follows an actual structural determination. After some introductory material on the nature of x-rays, the diffraction process, and the internal geometry of crystals, the selection and preparation of a crystal are considered. Techniques of measuring raw x-ray data are covered, plus their reduction into a useable form. The second part discusses both traditional and novel methods of solving the ``phase'' problem, the principal difficulty in x-ray structure determination. The third part considers how to extract the most information from the data and how to evaluate its reliability. Finally, there is a discussion of sources of error in practice and interpretation. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars introduction to the basics, at least in theory
This book is an excellent excellent introction to the basic physics and math of x-ray crystallography. This was used as the text in an undergrad class I took on protein crystallography and it was perfect for that purpose. The main drawback of this book is that it is really concentrated on small molecule structure determination, and doesn't address the problems or specific techniques used for large protein structures. So probably the best way to use this book would be in conjuction with a more protein-specific book. But for the raw fundamentals of symmetry and diffraction, I don't think you can beat stout & jensen. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Capacitive transducer review
I found this book an easy read. The author did not deal heavily in mathmatics but relied more on examples of working products. A good "hands-on" book for scientists and technician alike.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, well-organized, and easy to understand
Capacitive sensors are proliferating in OEM products despite the widely held superstition that they're hard to use and sensitive to humidity. Baxter covers the theoretical background, practical circuit design, and materials and stability issues for these devices, and ends by analyzing half a dozen products which use capacitive sensors. The writing is smooth and easy to follow, but there's enough detail for anyone. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Too much basic
This book is too much basic and elementary. The language is poor and little pleasant to read. The scanner mods are very explicit, but you can find similar on the net, with same results. The graphics are very poor, with bad resolution (sounds like a dratf). The topic about antennas is a little more interesting, but it provides little help with decimal system, because all formulas use inches and no convesion tips are provided. It's really a VEEEERY introdutory scanner book. You can find better information on the Internet. I didn't like it.

5-0 out of 5 stars For beginner or pro
Mr. Pickard has obviously spent a lot of time and research to pick up the best Scanner and antenna mods available. Now, You might say "Why Buy the book, I can find these mods on line free". I have a junk pile of burned up radios and scanners I'll sell you if you believe that to be the case. I have literally burned up scores of radios following "On line" advice. The Most recent was almost an expensive 10 meter Radio, something kept saying to me "This isn't right" so I stopped and drew out the circuit myself.. Bingo.. I had almost torched this baby.

You won't have that problem with Jerry's book, his designs and mods are based on sound, proven mods and practices on the more popular scanners of our time. He has good color photos, and walks you through each mod step by step. He gives you a list of tools needed and how to use them.

I personally enjoyed the section on antennas. Antennas are an often overlooked part of radios, which are probably more crucial than the radio itself! Jerry covers many antenna types, as well as "Stealth Antennas". His Stealth antenna may be worth the price of the book alone if you are ever in a situation where you NEED an antenna but fear discovery. This book is Solid, well written, entertaining and provides the novice hobbyist a chance to learn new skills and techniques. Beginner or Pro, it doesn't matter, you'll enjoy this book! ... Book Description

A cohesive view of the expanding field of optical scanning, in a single compact volume

Optical scanning is a systematic sampling of spatial information, transforming images or data to or from a temporal signal for electronic processing. The field of optical information handling has been developing rapidly, with many of its classical forms being transformed in new and fascinating ways. For instance, the once-discrete fields of serial and parallel optical information transfer are evolving into new hybrid systems as researchers add the flexibility of optical scanning for greater operational advantage in data manipulation and transfer. Insight for such creative advancement is fostered with the unification of unapparent or secluded concepts.

Written by an award-winning leader in the field, this is a thoroughly integrated overview of the many facets and disciplines of optical scanning. It brings together scanning theory, scanned resolution, deflection and modulation devices, optical transfer techniques, positional error analysis and control, system architecture, new research, and the unification of complementary or analogous processes, such as active and passive scanning systems.

Of particular utility to both practitioner and student are such features as:

  • An overview of the technology and unifying principles, including active and passive scanning, optical transfer, and system architecture
  • In-depth chapters on scanning theory and processes, scanned resolution, scanner devices and techniques, and the control of scanner beam misplacement
  • A comprehensive review of the government-sponsored research of agile beam steering, now primed for commercial adaptation
  • A unique focus on the Lagrange invariant and its revealing resolution invariant

3-0 out of 5 stars Review by Scanning and OCR Teacher
So far this is the only book I know of available on OCR and I have been researching over four years for two scanning classes I teach at a local community college. This probably is because not many people who own scanners actually have need of Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Those who do, such as office workers and librarians, will learn a great deal about preparing documents before attempting to scan/ocr. The author obviously has been involved in OCR since early days and provides manual solutions rather than explaining features in newer and more helpful OCR software. Creating forms in OCR is not covered.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference!
Ross writes directly and engagingly, providing a multitude of scenarios and examples to drive home his points. There's even a section that provides guidelines for software and scanner selection. A comprehensive, informative book and great reference guide. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars I don't like this book
We used this book for the first undergraduate topology course at my university. Perhaps the book is okay if you know what to expect from it before you buy it. What this book IS NOT is a book on General Topology. What this book IS is a book on the topology of the real number system. It's odd, because the course I took is one on general topology, where the topology of the real number system was mentioned as a mere footnote, yet this book covers very little general topology. At the end of each chapter, there is a starred section, in which about 1 page is devoted to how these concepts apply to general topology. So if that's what you want, perhaps you'll like this book. But that's not the only reason I didn't like it.

This book states EVERYTHING as a proposition. It gets ridiculous, there's so many propositions. In one section of one chapter I counted almost 40 propositions once. Unbelievable. Many results are not proved, which leaves alot to be desired in that department, and alot of the exercises are "give an example of...". These types of problems are great, but all in all there just isn't enough variety in this book for me.

So, if you're looking for a book on General Topology this definitely is not the one you want. If you're looking for a book on Topology of Rn, then I'd say you can consider this book rated 3.5 stars, and you can make your decision based on that.

However, if that's really all you want, you can find the same results in any modern analysis book such as Baby Rudin (i.e. Principles of Mathematical Analysis), and for general topology the book(s) to go to are Munkres' Topology, and Kelley's General Topology. ... Read more

Book Description

Advances in digital signal processing algorithms and computer technology have combined to produce real-time systems with capabilities far beyond those of just few years ago. Nonlinear, adaptive methods for signal processing have emerged to provide better array gain performance, however, they lack the robustness of conventional algorithms. The challenge remains to develop a concept that exploits the advantages of both-a scheme that integrates these methods in practical, real-time systems. The Advanced Signal Processing Handbook helps you meet that challenge. Beyond offering an outstanding introduction to the principles and applications of advanced signal processing, it develops a generic processing structure that takes advantage of the similarities that exist among radar, sonar, and medical imaging systems and integrates conventional and nonlinear processing schemes. ... Book Description

Now fully updated to cover recent developments, this book covers the closely related techniques of electron microprobe analysis (EMPA) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) specifically from a geological viewpoint. Topics discussed include: principles of electron-target interactions, electron beam instrumentation, X-ray spectrometry, general principles of SEM image formation, production of X-ray 'maps' showing elemental distributions, procedures for qualitative and quantitative X-ray analysis (both energy-dispersive and wavelength-dispersive), the use of both 'true' electron microprobes and SEMs fitted with X-ray spectrometers, and practical matters such as sample preparation and treatment of results. Throughout, there is an emphasis on geological aspects not mentioned in similar books aimed at a more general readership. The book avoids unnecessary technical detail in order to be easily accessible, and forms an up-to-date text on EMPA and SEM for geological postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers, as well as those working in industrial laboratories. ...
