Book is well suited for individuals who want to gain some understanding of dynamics as applied to structural systems. However, needs more material on how structural dynamics can be applied to computer applications. Still one of the better books you can buy on this subject.

Yes, this is an excellent overall introduction to the geotechnical aspects of earthquake engineering. We use it regularly in practice. The sections on seismic hazard analysis and seismic slope stability are particularly strong.

Topics in geotechnical earthquake engineering is one of the
most active fields and always in rapid changing. Only with
several years off, the book by Professor Kramer is going to
be out-of-dated. Yet it is the BEST book available so far on
this topic.
I found the information in this book is useful for learning and
understanding, yet for the most excellent descriptions, we
have to refer directly to the scattered publications of
Berkeley School (i.e. Prof. H.Seed, R. Seed and J. Bray et al).

This book is good for graduate level. It contains lots of principles and applications in this field. References listed in the book are very useful as a starting point in geotech research.

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT A WELL WRITTEN TEXTBOOK!
I am a graduate student studying geotechnical engineering and have used this book in my class. The problems at the end of each chapter are extremely difficult to do given the information in the textbook. I found myself constantly going to the library to attempt to get extra information which was almost always impossible to find. In fact, after spending hours on one problem, I talked to my professor about it and she spoke to the author of the book and he realized that the problem was not even possible to solve! I completely wasted hours of my time trying to solve it and it couldn't even be solved! Also, when a symbol for a constant is mentioned in the book, it is very difficult to go back and scan the pages to find out what the symbol stands for and what the correct equation is. Maybe the author can include a summary of symbols and what they stand for at the beginning of each chapter.

I would not recommend this textbook although I know that it is one of the few Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering textbooks out there.

One of the few books on geotechnical earthquake engineering. Treatment is extensive though it does not dwell in the specialist details for most topics. The chapter on "Ground response analysis" is excellent. I recently learnt of this professional software, "ProSHKAE" using the theory of this chapter to formulate its algorithm. This is a fairly introductory type book to help one pass the CA special seismic exam for the Civil PE. I had absolutely no background in the field. Used this book, along with the other PPI seismic review materials (as well as the UBC) to pass the exam on the first try. Not sure this book is very beneficial for someone who is experienced in the field, but as far as a beginner using it to pass the exam, it is adequate. I feel this book would greatly benefit from end-of-chapter type review problems, and I feel that certain chapters could use more depth (for example the chapter on diaphragm theory), but overall it served its purpose.

I purchased this book and several others to review for the Civil PE exam and California's special seismic exam. Although it's a fairly slim volume, it contains exactly the information you need to master in order to do well on the seismic exam--no more, no less. Also, since it has copies of the UBC tables needed for the exam questions, you could actually use it during the exam as a reference instead of buying the UBC, which is much more expensive. Even though I had both, I found it more convenient to use this book during the exam. P.S. to Mr. Lendvay: I passed.

I purchased the 7th edition of this book in late 1999 for study of the April 2000 California Special Seismic Exam for Civil Engineers. This book claims to be "A Professional's Introduction to Earthquake Forces and Design Details," but falls well short of any such description.

While small parts of this book are useful, the theoretical discussions in the vibration and diaphragm theorey chapters are disjointed and incomprehensible. Often formulas are published without explanation or even defining the variables. The readings do not prepare you for trying the example problems and the solutions are not adequately described so that you can learn from the practice.

Overall, save your money and check out a review book at the local library. ... Read more

Professor Priestley is No. 1 in the world when it comes to seismic design and retrofit of bridges. This book is a result of his extensive research conducted for Caltrans with Prof. Seible on bridge retrofit and their seismic behavior. The book is excellent reference for researchers and design engineers. The chapter about base isolations is very informative. Although I know that this is not his area, I wish he would elaborate more in chapter 3: seismicity and geotechnical considerations

This is a great addition to a review course that I took. Although this was not the instructor's favorite book, I find it shows me my weak areas. However, by studying this book in conjuction with Lindeburg and Baradar's Seismic Design of Building Structures, and using the other Baradar's book "seismic principles exams", I prepared myself for the CA Special Seismic Exam very well. Although I had no seismic background, these books assisted me to become a professional civil engineer by passing the seismic portion of the P.E. exam on the first try. I highly recommend this book as a must have book as a study aid.

I found this book very informative. All key information related to seismic principles and UBC seismic codes are well presented and easy to understand.

I highly recommend this book to all Civil Engineers. Also the other two books Mr. Baradar authored: Seismic Principles Practice Exams and Seismic Design of Building Structures should be on everyone's library.

This book is suitable for students and engineerings. The author brings us through the history of base isolation. From the simplest rolled rocks is the past to the new technique now. Let us understand the simply theory of base isolation and its application in the world. The code provisions for seismic isolation compares the 3 design codes and its purpose in U.S. The example explains the code inadequate and too complex for practical use. The code now had made it simple! The best part of this book is his design details; Dr. Kelly had isolator design and construction experience for years. He points out many details that a new design may not considered or even noticed. It also offers specifications for isolation manufacturing and testing. With this book in hand, we can know all about base isolation.

Excellent book. The basic seismic principles are presented so well and so easy by multiple questions format. I found solutions very comprehensive. It provides the key UBC codes. It prepares you well for the tough California seismic exam. I was amazed to see majority of the exam candidates had this book and other Baradar's book, 345 Solved Seismic Design Problems, going to the actual exam.

Out of all study guides, 345 Solved Seismic Design Problems and this book are the best. I passed the exam on first try. Special thanks go to Majid Baradar.

I used this book in conjunction with Baradar's 345 Solved Seismic Problems book and Lindeburg's Intro to Seismic Design books to study for (and pass on the first try) the CA special seismic exam. Although I had no background in the field at all, I feel these 3 books were enough to pass the exam. My comments on this book: the main problem is that the book references the outdated 1994 UBC rather than the 1997 UBC which is currently used in the CA special seismic exam. I also felt that the two practice exams contained in the book were a lot easier than the actual exam (mainly the length of problems, not the difficulty of the problems themselves). I also found the actual exam to contain more "theoretical/conceptual" type problems than the practice exams did. But the problems will still challenge you enough to help prepare you for the exam. I feel this is a worthwhile investment for anyone looking to pass the CA special seismic exam. ... Read more

I am doing my PhD in the Department of Civil engineering NWFP University of Engineering and Technology, Peshawar, Pakistan. My PhD title is "Study on improving the seismic performance of brick masonry structures in Peshawar and adjoining areas. I found this book extremely valuable towards my research goals. I'm an American, living overseas in Morocco. I'm preparing to build a house in an earthquake zone where they use masonry, and am in the process of educating myself before hiring an architect and contractor. The style of construction here has greatly concerned me for many years.

I am a lay person with a non-mathematical and non-engineering background. While this book is written primarily for engineers, it is also well-written in CLEAR ENGLISH that the layperson such as myself can understand. It has a lot of precise and clear photographs and drawings to illustrate the author's points. All of the mathematical formulas are included for engineers, and all sources are well-documented at the end of each chapter. I skip over the formulas, as they are far above my understanding. While there are some specific terms I don't understand, Miha has made every effort to explain most of the language, giving examples and photos of the terms he is talking about.

With the information I have gleaned from this most excellent book, I now feel prepared in terms of what questions I wish to dicusss with my future architect and builder.

I ordered this book purely by its title, since there were no previous reviews, and was a bit hesitant with the price. But the minute I received the book, and glanced through it, seeing the clear, well-written English, and the wonderful diagrams and illustrations, I felt the book was WELL-WORTH the price. Now that I have actually read the book, my initial judgement has been more than confirmed. I feel this book would be extremely useful for engineers, and for all laypersons who are considering masonry construction in earthquake zones--particularly in areas such as the hillsides of California which can be ravaged by forest fires and mudslides, in addition to earthquakes. Lastly, this book is extremely useful to people by myself, living in third-world countries, who wish to contruct a home of a better quality than is normally constructed. He discusses precise standards which are in place in various countries (not by name, but by typical standard), and compares them with modern Eurozone standards.

The author talking about the mechanics of isolation, the material of isolator. Using the simplest math equations explain how the base isolation works and its benefits. The book also talked about the behaviors of isolators, like rocking, overturning and bucking. From his experience he also suggest some design guidelines and details should be noticed for designers.
