4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent, but compressed
This book brings the reader up to date on almost every aspect of modern Electronic Warfare, and is well worth reading.

But I must add two caveats. First, Schleher covers so much ground in one volume that a great deal of background material is necessarily left out. The reader needs to be reasonably familiar with military electronics and the relevant aspects of physics to understand a lot of the material presented here. Indeed,in a few places, such as the discussion in Section 8.1.1 of high-power microwave weapons, so much has been left out that I doubt whether anybody who lacks specialized knowledge of that particular topic can infer the implications of what Schleher says.

My second caveat is that, perhaps because of space limitations, the book contains essentially no material relating the great mass of technical information it provides to operational doctrine and the tactical implications of operational doctrine. Given that it's impossible to put all of the very latest-and-greatest technical innovations into every weapon and every platform (because it would cost too much, add too much weight, take up too much space, and make maintenance inordinately difficult) the choice of what to use where has to be made on the basis of how the platform or weapon is to be used, and that can only be determined by considering operational doctrine. Many engineers, and even some military personnel, tend to overlook this, so in a book like Schleher's it would be invaluable to have this relationship discussed. But it isn't.

However, I found the book fascinating and informative.

Book Description

Atmospheric chemistry has been the focus of much research activity in recent years, and there is now heightened public awareness of the environmental issues in which it plays a part.

In a clear, readable style, this important book looks at the insights and interpretations afforded by the research, and places in context the exciting, dramatic, and sometimes disturbing findings.

Like its highly successful predecessor, this new edition lays down the principles of atmospheric chemistry and provides the necessary background for more detailed study. The text has been thoroughly revised and expanded throughout to take into account recent advances in atmospheric science that include a host of new atmospheric measurements, extended laboratory experiments, ever more sophisticated models, and ingenious interpretations of the phenomena.Heterogeneous processes are now known to be of great significance in the chemistry of the Earth's atmosphere, and new sections of the book discuss the influence of such processes on both the stratosphere and the troposphere. A major eruption, that of Mount Pinatubo, has highlighted how volcanoes can influence 'natural' atmospheric chemistry, and the opportunity is taken to examine the effects of the gases and particles produced in such eruptions. The startling discovery of the 'Antarctic ozone hole' has now been matched by observations of similar ozone losses in the Arctic; both phenomena are explored in more depth than before, and the whole question of trends in stratospheric ozone concentrations is updated. New topics in tropospheric chemistry that are discussed in this edition for the first time include the atmospheric chemistry of biogenic hydrocarbons, of aromatic compounds, and of halogens and halogen-containing species.

Severalaspects have been added to the examination of air pollution, including the effects of biomass burning.Rapid changes in the composition of the Earth's atmosphere, apparently a result of man's activities, are apparently even having an effect on global climate, and recent assessments of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change are presented in this context. Air transport continues to expand, and the influence of aircraft on atmospheric chemistry and, indeed, on climate has excited interest that is explained here. Moving away from Earth, information gathered by the Voyager, Galileo, and other space missions, which have provided a new understanding of the atmosphere of the planets other than our own, is also discussed and brought up to date.

This book does not attempt to suggest answers to the environmental problems facing us, but it lays the foundations for the study of atmospheric chemistry on which rational decisions will need to be based. A multidisciplinary approach is taken throughout in order to highlight the interplay between the atmosphere of a planet and other parts of the environment. This feature makes the book full of interest for chemists, physicists, biologists, and other scientists alike, and accessible to all of them. Readers will find the book an excellent introduction to an exciting topic, and a fascinating source of information about a part of science that is proving to be of key importance. ... Read more

"—The Daily Mercury, Guelph (Ontario) Here is the sequel to Craig Bohren’s popular Clouds in a Glass of Beer—the book that opened up the fascinating world of atmospheric physics to nonscientists. Like its predecessor—selected one of the "100 Best Products of the Year" by Curriculum Product News—its lively writing, fun, easy-to-perform experiments, and many photographs and illustrations offer you a great way to learn about a fascinating branch of science. And while it is an entertaining diversion for science enthusiasts, this book is something more. As David Jones—author of the renowned, "Daedalus" column, regularly appearing in Nature magazine—writes in his foreword, "Above all you will learn something of the scientist’s approach to the world, that powerful combination of practical curiosity and developed skepticism." ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Everyday science at its best
A variety of everyday phenomena are explained in this little book (185 pages). Most of it is optics and thermal physics, like frost and dew on the window, interference colors, mirages, heating and cooling (of LA smog, the greenhouse effect) origin of seasons, ...

Quite complex concepts like optical thickness are illustrated with nice experiments (pouring milk in water) and by foot steps in the snow. Don't be afraid of refractive index gradients or polarization upon reflection, Bohren will explain them marvelously.

I hope more physics textbooks would be like this: this is intriguing science whereas geometrical optics, the school book stuff, is mostly boring. Besides, these experiments and observations can be carried out by anybody with commonly available stuff: you only need a light bulb, a ruler and some volunteers to measure solar irrandiance, with 10-20% accuracy. ... Book Description

Signal Processing for Active Control sets out the signal processing and automatic control techniques that are used in the analysis and implementation of active systems for the control of sound and vibration. After reviewing the performance limitations introduced by physical aspects of active control, Stephen Elliott presents the calculation of the optimal performance and the implementation of adaptive real time controllers for a wide variety of active control systems.

Active sound and vibration control are technologically important problems with many applications.'Active control' means controlling disturbance by superimposing a second disturbance on the original source of disturbance.Put simply, initial noise + other specially-generated noise or vibration = silence [or controlled noise].

This book presents a unified approach to techniques that are used in the analysis and implementation of different control systems. It includes practical examples at the end of each chapter to illustrate the use of various approaches.

This book is intended for researchers, engineers, and students in the field of acoustics, active control, signal processing, and electrical engineering.

Book Description

The Art of Recording articulates and explores the ways recorded sound is different from live sound, and how those differences can enhance music, including surround sound. It presents a system for developing the critical and analytical listening skills necessary to recognize and understand these sound characteristics--the same skills necessary to create quality recordings-- and for talking about or describing sound.

The Art of Recording also considers audio recording as a creative process. The reader will learn to guide the artistry of music recording from its beginning as an idea, through its development during the many stages of the recording sequence, to its final form.

Take a new and detailed look at many of the greatest recordings of The Beatles, offering insights into how the recording process shaped their music, and how you can gain control over the craft of making great recordings.

* Recognize the unique qualities of recorded sound

* Realize the full potential of sound quality in the production of music recordings

* Discover your own creative voice in shaping music recordings

4-0 out of 5 stars This is a book with a difference
Most books rechew the same basic homerecording info you already read dozens of times. This book stands out with info you don't read anywhere else. It's mostly about training and development of hearing.
Great book, but like previous reviewers said, a bit dry and academic to read.
Would buy again.

3-0 out of 5 stars Textbookish reading
I can't say I learned too many new concepts reading this book. The later chapters are interesting but here's my problem: For one thing, the author goes into gross academic details of concepts he could've summed up in two paragraphs. Don't get me wrong, length is fine as long as there's something to be said or taught. This book is 320 pages and in my opinion should have been 150. It's wordy, too academic and too un-technical for my taste (especially chapters 1-5). I felt like I was reading about concepts I intuitively knew about anyway. But, not to be too cruel, there are few things that are interesting (chapters 6-15). For instance, you learn the techniques of critical listening, evaluating time, pitch, dynamics and overall sound quality. But, again these are concepts that are intuitive to me, these chapters just spell it out. Let's not forget that this is a text book and if you're impatient like me, and don't want every thing spelled out, you might get bored. But if you are taking the academic route to recording and are a beginner then...ahhh... you decide.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Book
The self-important author favors generalizations, over-inflated ideas, and wrong terminology. The book is an quasi-academic treatise in which obvious concepts are discussed in depth by a writer of limited professional knowledge. I returned my copy. Spend your book-buying dollars on another title.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just what I was looking for
Recording is all about the art of listening and this book teaches you just that. So if you are serious about being able to produce something worthwhile this book is a good read. Some would categorized it as advanced, but for me I think it addresses the most essential part of the recording process. Building from the actual physical penomenon it moves to concepts/terms more frequently encountered; EQ, Compression etc.
My favorite is that it teaches you to be a better listener.

4-0 out of 5 stars A very thorough textbook, not a gentle introduction
This is a very thorough mixing textbook. The author goes far beyond the usual mixing book by establishing techniques and vocabulary for describing all aspects of sound. I'd recommend it to college students, music or audio professionals, and serious amateurs.

Although the book has useful content, it is highly technical (thankfully, no math), so it may not be appropriate for some readers. Also, either the author's style was dense, or I'm dense (probably both). ... Read more

Although the subject of naval camouflage is of immense importance to warship enthusiasts, model makers, and naval historians, there has never been an authoritative history on the subject until now. This comprehensive study brings fragmented historical evidence into focus by listing all of the major patterns and schemes, as well as their colors, characteristics, and functions. Photographs and approved pattern drawings with variations provide a clarifying visual reference to an art form that was often a product of ad hoc wartime development. The accompanying narrative describes the theory of visual deception with an emphasis on British and American ships and selected German and neutral ships. This generously illustrated volume will become a standard reference for all naval history bookshelves. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Exhausting, Exhaustive, Maddening, Intriguing
Exhausting, Exhaustive, Maddening, Intriguing
"Naval Camouflage 1914-1945, a Complete Visual Reference", by David Williams, NIP 2001

I cannot decide whether to recommend this book or not. It has lots of pictures of ships (good), but a lot of them are poor. For example, one of them is captioned "Although not that evident in this photograph, the ... carries ... Measure 32..." Well if the picture is so poor that you cannot see what it illustrates, why not drop it in favor of a better picture?

There are only 15 color photographs. Even here, there is waste. Six of them are modern photographs of two memorial ships painted to match WW2 colors. That is probably a good way to see the colors. Not bad, except that there are two photos of HMS Belfast showing the same scheme (alternate sides to be sure, but when there are so few color slots we'd be better off with a different picture) and there are 4 modern color photos of the ORP Blyskawica; two are of the same side on the same day. Inconceivable.

Then there are other irritations. Captions which say (I paraphrase) "here is measure xx, a true dazzle..." but nowhere in the book does it say what the difference is between "true" dazzle and other dazzle. The author also distinguishes between disruptive and dazzle, again without explaining the difference.

OK, so I cannot recommend it as a reference book. So, close it up. Put it on the shelf. Wait a couple of days. Get it out and open it up. Only this time, instead of expecting a reference book, expect an art book. If you simply look at the photos (even though poor), the craft of the original artists comes through. On this level, this book is very enjoyable. Just look at the pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars about as good as you can get
Being a miniature wargammer, I have a great need for a reliable referance book that shows naval camouflage schemes. This book has numerious black and white pictures and several color photos that are a great help for painting. The book is somewhat lacking on describing the base of some schemes, but if you have basic knowledge in colors each navy uses, it is not very hard to asign colors to the paterns. This book is espically useful in showing several uncomon to rare Axis camo paterns. A must for anyone who wants to paint WWI or WWII naval ships. ... Read more

Book Description

This acclaimed hardcover text--recognized by teachers throughout the world as the best of its kind--provides advanced undergraduate and graduate students with an integrative presentation of the important concepts of the theory of atmospheric motion. Beginning with a comprehensive mathematical treatment of atmospheric kinematics and thermodynamics, Professor Dutton--Dean of the College of Earth and Mineral Sciences at The Pennsylvania State University--presents a thorough development of atmospheric dynamics. Topics treated in detail include atmospheric structure, the equations of motion in inertial coordinates, meteorological equations of motion, moisture processes, models of the wind, atmospheric energetics, vorticity, atmospheric wave motion, and the quasi-geostrophic theory of large-scale flow. The book is divided into three parts: Foundations of Atmospheric Dynamics, The Equations of Atmospheric Motion, and the Theory of Atmospheric Motion. A chapter new to this edition presents a unified approach to approximate equations of motion for various scales of flow, examines the topological dynamics of spectral models and introduces the concept of metamodeling. More than 400 problems at various levels of difficulty complement the text. Corrected and enlarged Dover republication of the edition published by McGraw-Hill BookCompany, New York, 1976. An icon of the Cold War, Boeing's mighty B-52 is undoubtedly the most famous jet bomber ever built, having served now for almost 40 years. The last in the line of Boeing "heavies", the Stratofortress has gone on to break all records for longevity, firstly with Strategic Air Command, and more recently with Air Combat Command. Built to wage war against America's communist foes across a truly global battle field, the B-52, rather ironically, has only seen action in "isolated" engagements, firstly over the jungles of Vietnam and then two decades later during the brief "Desert Storm" campaign. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars brought back alot of memories
I found this book to outstanding. This book is full of memories of my life at Castle afb,ca. 1981-1984.

5-0 out of 5 stars Big Useful Fact Filled Book
This book is arguably the best book overall on the US Air Force's B-52 heavy bomber covering it's first 40 years, i.e. up to 1995. The B-52 has seen much action in Bosnia and Afghanistan since this book's publishing in 1995, so be aware of this if you are looking for the most recent chapters in the life of this venerable warhorse. Robert Dorr's excellent writing combined with Lindsay Peacock's fascination with the aircraft of the now defunct Strategic Air Command make this book a necessary purchase for all people who have been associated with or are interested in Boeing's bomber masterpiece. Walter Boyne's (a former B-52 pilot) 144-page "Boeing B-52: A Documentary History" first completed in 1981 is also an excellent book but, more for the serious historian or former crew-members due to it's in-depth discussions on equipment and tactics. "B-52 Stratofortress" totals 229 pages and covers a broader range of topics with only slightly less depth. The readability is excellent even to those not intimately familiar with "B-52ese" and/or Air Force acronyms. Chapters include development of the B-52, nuclear bomb tests in the Pacific, technical features, newer models, ground alert operations, weapons, B-52s in combat in VietNam, action in Desert Storm, and aircraft/unit attrition up to 1994. Also included are nine separate appendices covering 39 pages listing each model's specifications, production details, variants, unit usage of each aircraft, B-52 usage of each wing and squadron, base assignments, modifications on each model, a cutaway drawing of a B-52G, individual aircraft distribution of the B-52 fleet in 1964, unit distribution over the years, individual aircraft losses, and details on aircraft consigned to storage. A tremendous variety of excellent photos with informative captions are used showing most every aspect of the "BUFF" in use. Of particular interest to the laymen or Carswell AFB veteran is a chapter describing a low level mission one of the authors got to fly in a B-52H out of Carswell in early 1991.

If you are fascinated by B-52s, this is the book for you... It is not a "general" coffee-table book for the "general" public, though. There is no war-mongering in this book either. It is an excellent survey of a remarkably versatile aircraft.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to a classic strategic bomber.
This is a well-presented and useful introduction to anyone interested in the B-52 bomber. Its only drawback in my view is that being printed before recent crises such as the 1991 Gulf War and the 1999 Kosovo crisis, the action of B-52s in recent years are not featured. But if not I liked this book, its text as well as the excellent photographs. line drawings and colour plates. ... Read more
