The book is a great textbook for students and practicing engineers. It covers pretty much all the steel topics. It has plenty of examples from ASD design to LRFD design. I think that out of all of the steel design books out there, this is the best.

I have already read the book and study many of the examples, my classmates and I have found many mistakes in the fourth edition, however the information contained and the subjects studied are very complete. I hope the next edition will have those examples solved in a correct way in order to clasify this book as an excellent text.

If you have some basic knowledge of LRFD design and connection. This would be an OK book. It contains so many example in many load cases and connection type. All of them are hot rolled steel or high force connection. In example it dose not tell how to retrive this equation, reference to variables, and how to use this equation.. you only have to guess. If you guess right, then it can be applicable to real construction.

Tamboli's connection handbook complements the AISC Connections Manual beautifully. In a clear, easy-to-follow way, it addresses all of the major procedures for connecting structural elements and the philosophy behind them. The handbook uses thoughtful examples and good photos to explain how connections work and are built. The tips it gives, especially for connections to composite members and space trusses, are particularly helpful in practical design. I have never seen a more complete, quality connections manual, and I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to improve their knowledge of the latest connection techniques.

I am a civil engineer. I have been studying and designing steel structures for years. In Vietnam, this type of structure is not popular, and nobody knows how to make it good, make it beautiful.

The only thing I really want right now is to be the one of the best in area of designing steel structure.

So, this book may bring me some good knowledge, some new idea. That's all. I do want more information, like a sample of pages, picture, drawings, what can be included in this book

The author has organized the most commonly used steel details in CAD formats. I belive many engineers or enthusiast who do not have similar CAD details in their computer will appreciate Mr. Zayat's works, since the CAD files will reduce effort to develop details not form the scratch.
A nice collection of seed files are ready to be tansfered into Auto CAD or Microstation.
This book is not for steel detailers who want to see more rigorous detailing that normally shown in AISC's publications such as "Detailing for Steel Construction" and "Engineering for Steel Construction".
For students who want to use those details may need other references or somebody to find out the reason and mechanics behind those details.

I am a Steel Detailer. I draw steel beams, columns, braces and the like for a living. I thought from the title that this was a book about steel detailing. I am sure that I should have read beyond the title because although it is called "Steel Detailing in Cad Format", it is not a book about "Steel Detailing". It is a book of "Details" for "Steel Designers." I am sure that the author and publishers did not mean to mislead, but they could have come up with a more fitting title.

For my needs the book was a complete waste of money.

I was surprised to find out that the book does not offer any explanations of the context, the selection critera, the constraints facing the detailer, for a given detail. In fact the book does not include any explanation or calculations of any kind. Only sketches. I am a structural engineer, and I failed to find a way for benefiting from this book, professionaly or academicaly.

I am working as a civil engineer in a design office active in constructing light gauge steel structures. I have bought the book to obtain a guide or some kind of a handbook which includes some guidelines or procedures for typical structural steel design applications. But i hava found the book too superficial. I wish the book handled the subjects in a little bit detailed way. And I wish there were flowcharts for designing with steel. The only good thing about the book is the example projects at the end of the book. As a result I do not advise this book to anyone because it is expensive too. Pay half more and buy the Structural Steel Designer's Handbook, which includes all the information in this book and much much more.Do not pay attention to the number of pages written here, since size of the book is nearly the size of a pocket book. ... Cold formed steel is cheap and widely supply in some country. By using the code in this book, I can reduce so much material cost from expensive imported wide flange into a self made double I beam by using 2 C light lip. This book is practical can be use in real construction by following detailed example.

This book is written by various experience P.E. or Professors. It is not emphasis on practical calculation. There are very few example and definitions for formulars and related equation. If reader has no experience before, it would be very difficult to understand. Half of the book is devoted to bridge design, and it dose not provide enough information to design a bridge..

This is not really a how-to book.

The title of this book, in my mind, is a misnomer. If you're looking for a true manual of steel construction, meaning a how-to book, this isn't the book to buy. This book is centered around architecture, not down and dirty steel construction techniques. There are no methods included in the book for such things as calculating loads, yield, tensile, etc. If you want a world wide sampling of connecting means, truss designs, etc. with no dimensions in the examples then this is the book for you. In short I am very disappointed in my purchase as it doesn't suit my needs.

This book gives a synoptic view of steel in building construction, mostly its structural uses. It differs from the Concrete and Masonry versions, which lean more towards a summary of the building codes, and the Glass version, which goes on at length about solar effects, in its more lengthy review of the engineering basics involved. (But perhaps the subject lends itself to this approach, being more specialized.) The text is also the easiest to read of all the books, more than compensating for the lack of color pictures anywhere. The middle technical section covers the subject in a very orderly way, beginning with the structural properties of small components and proceeding on to the assembled skyscraper. The last sections will leave you scratching your head unless you're an engineer though.

There is also a section on construction practices, where you might be reminded to leave an inch or two of space under your column base plates to allow for construction tolerances, and to use special expanding grout for filling it instead of mortar or concrete, which would shrink on curing and provide opportunities for water getting in. Or to try to achieve equal compression in all your columns, so settling will be uniform.

Surprisingly enjoyable, and not used in the other books but maybe not possible there, owing to their extensive excerpting of tables from building codes, is the way the text does not normally keep referring you to figures, but allows you to read uninterrupted. The figures are there, as in the other books, but they have more extensive captions which allow them to stand alone and be read in parallel with the main text.

Like the other books in the series, there are no equations to speak of, or very few. Just an attempt to explain all the relevant principles in a qualitative way and to demonstrate their use with hundreds of meticulous drawings. ... Read more

Shifting between past and present, Jim Rasenberger travels back to the earliest iron bridges and buildings of the nineteenth century; to the triumph of the Brooklyn Bridge and the 1907 tragedy of the Quebec Bridge, where seventy-five ironworkers, including thirty-three Mohawks, lost their lives in an instant; through New York's skyscraper boom of the late 1920s, when ironworkers were hailed as "industrial age heroes." All the while, Rasenberger documents the lives of several contempor-ary ironworkers raising steel on a twenty-first-century skyscraper, the Time Warner building in New York City.

This is a fast-paced, bare-knuckled portrait of vivid personalities, containing episodes of startling violence (as when ironworkers dynamited the Los Angeles Times building in 1910) and exhilarating adventure. In the end, High Steel is also a moving account of brotherhood and family. Many of those working in the trade today descend from multigenerational dynasties of ironworkers. As they walk steel, they follow in the footsteps of their fathers, grandfathers, and great-grandfathers.

An outstanding account of the brotherhood that built the New York City skyline. Rasenberger does two things particularly well in this book. First, he provides a fine history of the DANGEROUS iron working trade, as it developed with the advent of the syscraper, the redoubtable Flatiron building. "The danger was reflected in the carnage...of 1,000 members of Chicago Local 1 that same year, 103 were injured, 15 permanently disabled and 18 died." Second, he paints lovely portraits of the individuals (the stoic daredevils) who did the work, Sam Parks, "Frenchy" and Jack Doyle, to name a few. I highly recommend that a prospective reader use Amazon's "look inside" feature to sample Rasenber's non-nonsene prose, so well-suited to his subject matter.

"High Steel" has the reader marveling that this dramatic story has remained untold until now. As in "Seabiscuit," the author's narrative skills work with an exotic profession, and a dramatic period in history, to produce a truly gripping read. Rasenberger illuminates the history of ironwork in this country, and beautifully evokes both its danger and its draw to those who join the trade. It is a thrilling, perilous, foreign world up there where the ironworkers spend their days; we are privileged to gain entrance to this world through "High Steel."

This story of iron workers is both extremely interesting and a really fun read. It provides beautifully crafted vignettes drawn both from the history of iron workers and from contemporary tales of today's iron workers at work in New York. A strong narrative thread connects these stories as the reader learns about the lives of a small group of iron workers today at the same time as Rasenberger deftly introduces the history of this trade and its daring tradesmen that brings this story to life and sets it in context. I would recommend this book to anyone interested in iron workers, in the history of our tall buildings and impressive bridges and to anyone looking for an accessible and fun read about real workers engaged in daring and dangerous work. It's beautifully written, a sympathetic portrait, yet one that is not afraid to highlight the faults and foibles of the people it describes, making the story one that resonates as accurate and, most of all, real.

Being an Ironworker for the last 42 years myself, I found this book right on the mark about the lives of working Ironworkers. Mr. Rasenberger has identified the uniqueness of Ironworkers in his book and ties it all together with some very interesting historical events that occurred to the Ironworkers Union. This is a great analysis and design book in tall buildings. You will find plenty of examples and discussions. Although the book does not get deep into some of the advanced topics, it is still a great source for structural engineers.

It is a very practical book containg material which will be useful to those engaged in the design of tall buildings.
