Absolutely essential book for anybody interested in stresses in notched bodies; structural analysts who like to use the 'back of the envelope', finite element analysts, fracture mechanicists; designers in aerospace, rail, heavy machinery, light machinery, medical devices, almost anything you can name. Book has been updated from the original; even if you have the original edition, this 2nd edition is well worth having for your engineering reference library.

This book explains the fundamentals of structural analysis (mainly statically determinate structures) and then goes on to the design fundamentals for different materials (wood, steel, concrete and masonry) followed by the design of the structural system for a building. I first used an earlier edition of this book when studying for my undergraduate degree as an introductory book before reading the course texts. The present edition maintains the "easy to understand" explanations of the earlier edition while adding new materials, expanding other sections and updating the design methods in line with the building codes. Emphasis is placed on understanding, the explanations given are very clear and there are numerous worked examples to illustrate the principles. The book is excellent for the beginner first getting used to structural analysis and design or for the practising engineer who has not touched structures for a while and wants to refresh his memory. However this book is only the first step and the undergraduate or practising engineer would do well to follow up on this with other more specialised books like Wang and Salmon's "Reinforced Concrete Design", Salmon and Johnson's "Steel structures: Design and behaviour", or Halperin and Bible's "Principles of Timber Design for Architects and Builders". ... This book gives a very good explanation in finite element especially for engineer. Its mathematics is simple and to the point. A very good book for the starter in finite element. But the solution is separate from this book, it is in CD and it is difficult to get the CD. If this book can contain both in one book, it will be great.

I think this is one of the best books on FE. It is written from the point of view of an engineer and avoids unnecessary mathematics. The concepts are explained very clearly and there is a fair number of solved examples in each chapter.

Let me start out by saying that an excellent starter book on FEA has yet to be written. It's a frustrating situation, but we'll have to live with it for now. Cook has the foundation for a really good book here. He does a decent job of explaining element formulations and their limitations without bringing on endless pages of variational calculus that we're all sick of seeing in FEA books.

But the book needs more development. What engineers want is a book that will give the BASIC mathematical foundations, and then get on with showing how to DO finite element analysis. That was the attempt of Adams and Askenazi's book, "Building Better Products with Finite Element Analysis", but unfortunately it came across as overly-simplified and lacking in specifics (too much fluff, and not enough meat).

In contrast, Cook zeros in on the core material without wasting words. Problem is, the material comes across in a cursory manner without the development it deserves. The author frequently broaches complex topics, and then gives insufficient discussion to clarify them. I'm sure he understands them, but the rest of us need a little more explanation, in layman's terms, with examples.

In summary, the book needs more... more real world problems; more examples on how to avoid pitfalls in applying boundary conditions; more useful discussion on contact analysis; more quantitative information on how fine to make a mesh. Sure, we all know that hex elements are better than tets, but how much better? Roughly how many hex elements per 90 degrees of arc are required to get sufficient accuracy for hex-8s, tet-4s, and tet-10s? I realize there are no exact answers to these questions, but surely there are rules of thumb that practicing engineers use, because most practicing engineers don't have time to run 10 different mesh refinements and do a convergence analysis.

I apologize if I sound like I'm venting, which I am, but if you don't find any of this helpful, just remember what you paid for it.

Every FE analyst NEEDS to know the content in this book, because as the author points out, FE modeling is much more than mere meshing and pre-preprocessing. It's nothing fancy, just a numerical method for the solution and the rest of the process, knowing the problem theoretically and conceptually is much more important than pretty pictures. A MUST HAVE for every FE analyst.

It can be described as a book on how to REALLY use FEA - an appropriate level of theory is discussed, and then the author provides a very lucrative discussion of actually using FEA to model real-world systems. Pitfalls, how elements can or cannot actually model structures, and generally good FEA practise are discussed. This is one of the worst textbooks I've ever bought. At least it's complete at over 1000 pages. The example problems, the heart of a text on engineering, leave MUCH to be desired. More than once the authors have decided to reveal new, and consequently unexplained concepts in the first problems at the chapter's end. That coupled with the fact that the instructor's solution manual contains few actual solutions is unforgivable. Repeatedly I've been forced to guess or assume reasons for the existance of certain calculations. Rarely do the authors explain their reasoning for doing certain things and if they do explain something it's not easily understandable from the text. I wouldn't recommend this text to anyone! If you're thinking about getting this book as a desk reference don't waste your money!

I find this book to be a very handy reference. Sometimes the equations get very involved, but I do like the way the material is presented. The font is kinda wierd (newest edition), but thats just a subjective thing for me. I also like the design section in the back, and the depth of information on design considerations is neat. Including this book, Swanson's analysis book is another good addition for joggling your memory on composite analysis that you took in grad school. :)

When I took a composite materials course as a senior at NCSU, the teacher didn't. In a fit of desperation, I went to the bookstore and looked at all (3) composite books. This one used the same symbology as my prof's lecture notes, so I bought it, despite the price.

What a great investment! The first chapter gives an excellent overview of the "why?" of composites. Chapters 2-end give you everything you every needed to know about composite mechanics (at least at the senior undergraduate level.)

With this book, I learned the material and passed the course quite easily.

Complaint: Like most textbooks, it gives very little coverage of computer modelling. Some, but not as much as I would have liked. It helped me pass the concept parts of the course, but I had to sink-or-swim on my own when it came time to write code.

Other than that complaint, this is an excellent introductory book.
