1-0 out of 5 stars how to survive the use of this book
this book is terrible! There are very few helpful illustrations, some simply don't exist ie in the defining of angles and their relationships! for some problems/projects that are fairly involved, several completely different data sets are used, so if you were confused about something on one step you cannot derive understanding from the completion of the problem. So, you are forced to rely on the horrible text written partially in crat -things are explained in the longest possible way! The author and our instructor use different terms, it is awful.

My tip: rely on lectures and labs and don't miss a single one, get a study budy or work with your lab partner immediately after class. AVOID USING THIS BOOK IF IT CONFUSES YOU like it does me. I came to this class with a fair understanding most of this already but the book muddles it up so bad I was forced to abandon use of it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elementary Surveying
Simply the best surveying text. The best feature is the way it introduces the basic concepts of a topic followed by a section of advanced concepts concerning the topic. This makes the book an essential reference for both students and practioners. This book is highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Students
I graduated form a Tech. school that used this book as the source of study. I thought that it, with the help of my instructor, was a great refrence. I still use it today to look up anything from state plane coordinates to legal descriptions.

over all its a good book to have.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wolf: Elementary Surveying (an educator's point of view)
As an educator of over 20 years, I have used many elementary texts on surveying. This is by far the most comprehensive and easy to understand book for the student wishing to learn from the basics to advanced surveying topics. One of the things that I like about this book is that I have found it is applicable to both the on campus courses at the University of Wyoming as well as the off campus courses that we offer to experienced, practicing surveyors around the country. The topics are just as suited for my students in Florida as they are in New York, California, Mississippi or Hawaii, and that's saying a lot since the laws are different in all regions of the country. I have found that using this book has been very easy to present material useful to students taking the classes in any state while preparing for the FLS or LS exam, because it covers the topics to about the right amount of depth as the exam expects the examinee to comprehend. The only downfall of the book as I see it is that there are numerous wrong answers (in the back of the book)to the selected homework problems that answers are provided for. This can be frustrating at times as you can imagine. If you can find me, I'd be happy to forward a list of these erroneous answers, and the correct answers. This might be very useful for other educators. As per the rules of posting reviews, I can't put my email address on here. Bummer.

In my opinion this work is simply the best introductory surveying textbook available, and I've seen more than a few. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Land Surveyor Reference Manual
This was the only book I used to study for the LSIT. I am not a surveyor by trade but a civil engineer. This book did a good job covering and explaining subjects that I had not been exposed to or hadn't worked with since college. Using this book to study with I passed the LSIT exam on the first try. Some of the exam questions seemed like they were taken directly out of the text of this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Do not need it
The manual was not written by a professional or educator in land surveying. The manual delivers only quite superficial coverage to each category in surveying. Although the author managed to involved many relevant information from coded sources, in-depth discussions and delivery of critical fundamental concepts are unavailable.

The manual may be somewhat useful for civil engineering students with none or minimal surveying knowledge, but too much over-simplified ABCs for students possess certain basis surveying knowledge.

It contents not even adequate materials for LSIT exams.

It still could be a concise guide for Civil Professional Engineering candidates in reviewing surveying topics; however, it will not satisfy any other purposes for LS exams, advanced students, or professionals.

If you are buying references in surveying topics intended for in-depth purpose, try something else.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fully Comprehensive and an excellent reference.
I have more than five years using third party Acad applications for land development and I found this material systematic, well organized and easy to follow. The examples provided ( CD included) are sequential to the lectures which makes it an excellent didactic tool. On the other hand, the text does not cover the possible, or most common, types of reports that can be generated with the program in its differents applications.

If you are looking for a self-training course in LDD, the price for this book Vs. what you get out of it is worth every penny.

3-0 out of 5 stars Harnessing Autodesk LDDT2i
The overall organization is quite good..., however, if you have been using LDD for a while and have accessed the online help to learn the program, you may find much similarity in syntax. If you are new to using LDD, then it is worth the price of the book. Keep in mind though, if you need to pick up the overall working mechanism of this LDD software and civil design in general in a rather short period of time, you best bet may be going to an authorized learning center. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
This book is an excellent resource and covers all topics in a sufficient and easy to read manner and definitely covers all the "elements". Anyone that is interested in Photogrammetry will find this book quite useful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Book Review: Elements of Phtogrammetry
This book is substantially revised from the previous edition in 1983, some 17 years ago. Consequently, new topics are added, particularly on GIS and digital photogrammetry. The appendixes on least squares adjustment, co-ordinate transformations, collinearity equations and digital resampling are particularly useful.

This book is clearly one of the best ones around in the area of photogrammetry. The chapters are properly organised and the concepts are explained clearly.

Of course, every book has to focus on its intent and target audience. The authors did this with flying colors. If there is anything missing in the current photogrammetric literature, it surely must be a book that reorganises the chapters into an operational book of case studies on photogrammetric practice.

I strongly recommend the book to you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Do well on these questions and you will pass your FLS!!!
I used this book almost exclusively in studying for the FLS exam in October of 2003 and ultimately passing it. I felt like the questions in here prepared me really well, in fact, the majority of them were more difficult than the ones on the test! The only things that I can think of that it didn't delve into were computer, spelling, and grammar questions which were on the exam, but you only have to get a 70% on it, not 100%!! After all this is a SURVEYING book....

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to Surveying
This is the most practical exam prep tool I've found to date, and I know what I'm talking about. Licensure was important to me, so I've purchased and used over $2,000 worth of references. This book is the most thorough, topic by topic prep manual I've seen. If you can master the material in this book, you're as ready for the NCEES exam as you can possibly be. How do I know? I passed on my first sitting, and this book was one of the main reasons why. Going through this book from cover to cover is definitely like "basic training" for surveyors.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and well organized
This books really covers all the basics in Surveying, from Boundary Law to GPS. If you want to prepare yourself for a national exam, you should have it. I would say that once you learn everything in it, you are at a level between the LSIT and the LS. Contains lots of precious information and will help you find the weak points in your knowledge! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars And What Of Your GPS After An H-Bomb Detonates ?
All of this electronic stuff is fine and good, and on occasion it is microscopically accurate -- but nothing really beats the old fashioned way. A K&E transit, a Zeiss level, a good old chain, level rod, range pole and plumb bob -- with axes and stakes and hubs and tacks and hammers and brush hooks: THAT is land surveying. And, those old ways are all we'll be left with, after the magnetic pulse from a big bomb wipes out all your electronics, your distance meter and little azimuth beeper. Cutting a line through the woods, running cross-sections across fields of flagged laths, manually computing your cuts, fills, backsights, and deflections, THAT is was you can always put in the bank. Yeah, all this fancy equipment is lovely until the day you forget to charge the battery, or some moron leaves the truck window down and your satellite-powered theodolite gets all wet. The old ways, boys, those are the best, true and tested, most reliable ways. Give me a turn, it's time to move the instrument.

5-0 out of 5 stars The GPS Primer - updated
I found Mr. Van Sickle's 2nd edition book to be an expansion, correction and update of the 1st edition (previously reviewed). The book now has nine chapters and includes a new one on "real-time". Various corrections and updates have been placed into print which were greatly needed. The book "boils down" GPS into its basic components and explains difficult aspects in a more understandable fashion. The new, larger illustrations are generally more easier to see and of a better quality than before. Mr. Van Sickle has added questions and answers at the end of each chapter making the book more useful in the classroom. Generally, I liked the new book and would recommend it as a basic part of your GPS/Surveying library. I intend to use the book as a textbook for my upcoming semester and I know that the students will like it as much as I have, especially with the new self-checking questions and answers at the end of each chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent guide to an interesting topic
Jan, is a very talented individual. From his acting, to his recitals of Shakespeare, this book is a testament to his ability to distill the essence of a deeply scientific subject and reduce it to bite-size chunks of information, suitable for those lesser mortals.

Apart from being an all-round good bloke, Jan has done an excellent job and I would highly recommend it to all readers wanting a deeper understanding of this technology, without their eyes glazing over with complex formulae and math. Well done Jan.

5-0 out of 5 stars In depth coverage on topics for land surveyors
Jan presents a very concise and complete book on the intricate details involved with all aspects of GPS, from the GPS satellite signal structure itself to the applications of the Land Surveyor in implementing this technology. This book is a great learning tool for Land Surveyors interested in learning more about the who, what, where, and why's on GPS Surveying.

3-0 out of 5 stars A concise and practical treatise on GPS without alot of math
I found Mr. Van Sickle's book to be very concisely written yet full of practical "how tos". The flow from concept to concept is well though out. He shows his vast experience and knowledge of the subject on nearly every page. There are however, some large scriveners errors which are too large to be considered typographical errors (sometimes a whole sentence or paragraph is unrecognizable). In some cases these errors detract greatly from the content since it hard to know what he is saying. One aspect of Mr. Van Sickle's style is his ability to explain a concept, albeit difficult for most to understand, using common words and phrases. Generally, I liked the book and would recommend it as a basic part of your GPS library. One should experience various aspects of a subject from all directions to be able to fully understand anything. I will confess to learning a number of things from Mr. Van Sickle's book mostly due to his easy literary style which I had not previously understood. I have used the book as a textbook for two semesters and will continue to do so. I only hope that there is a new corrected edition available soon. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The included software package
This is an excellent and relevant book. It is well structured, and the examples are very much practice oriented. However, when I tried to install the included software under Windows 98 and Windows 2000 Prof I failed. Only under Windows 95 it runs!
Did I something wrong or it is just like that!
I would appreciate any helpful comment!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great investment
This is the most clear, well-written surveying text I've ever read. I recommend it both for students and --especially-- practising surveyors, who should have no problem going through it even after an exhausting day's work as, technical as it is, it is presented in a way by no means overwhelming. By the end of the book you'll have a firm understanding of, and be comfortably applying, statistical principles and least-squares methods in your job. It's an investment worth every penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource
Starts off with some basic principles before going in to more developed mathematical and stochastic models and even includes topics include in the use of constraint equations and blunder detection. Explanations are supported by clear & practical problems. Excellent book for surveyors and photogrammetrist.

The mathematical type problems in this sample exam are very representative of the actual test problems and serve as a good review for general surveying review. 5-0 out of 5 stars A resource for more than just GPS
This is an excellent book for anyone that works with spacecraft geometry and/or timekeeping. It contains concise descriptions of coordinate systems, orbital elements and timekeeping. I've been using it as an algorithm 'cookbook'. This is not a book for a casual GPS user, or someone who is sqeamish about math. It's much easier to use than the Astronomical Almanac for basic algorithms. Like a fool, I lent it out. Now I need to buy another one.

3-0 out of 5 stars More theory than practice!
As a commercial GPS user, I was looking for a book that would offer a fairly basic overview of GPS, but that would still go into significant detail. This book does exactly that, but it also covers a lot of the mathematical theory behind GPS. This book certainly isn't introductory and I think would be more suited to a surveyor with a good knowledge of surveying techniques who was interested in GPS. The mathematics gets a bit heavy for a non-mathematician but Chapter 7 (Surveying with GPS) is an excellent introduction/review of the practical uses of GPS in the field. A good intermediate-advanced level book, probably very suited to students. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Alfred Leick's GPS book
I am surpised by the previous reviews. I am going to press on this book solely because of the excellent way in which the author has reviewed the subject. The text is as easy to understand and clearly explained as any book could be on such a complicated subject. The insertion and detailing of formulae is related to the text with similar clarity. The author naturally assumes some knowledge of the subject by the reader. If you are at this level the rest is relatively painless. The author's use and command of the English language is as good as his knowledge of the subject of GPS. For those of us that have listened to rooms full of GPS boffins speaking their own dialect this book provides a definitive translation.

5-0 out of 5 stars GPS is too complex to understand well
GPS looks like a "Black Box",I want to understand the thoery, method and programming a GPS data processing software.

3-0 out of 5 stars Highly Technical...Wish it were more Practical
Probably an important book for your GPS library, but it's easy to get lost in all the complex equations. Not for someone who is interested in the basics or who wants an overview. If you want the nitty-gritty details, this one's for you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars See Under the Hood
Just enough math to let the user know what is at work. Good for beginners in spatial data and can then move into authors like Tobler. Chapter 5 is an excellent primer of Global Positioning Systems (GPS) and discusses the importance in defining datums. All the case studies are located in the UK but can easily be applied to any location.

This book gives you just enough information to teach yourself basic projection transforms and the nuts and bolts of how they work.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Beginners
The author has provided us with a very good book that introduces many concepts in remote sensing and GIS related to datums and map projections. The book is a great reference too. ... Read more
