5-0 out of 5 stars Sine Qua Non
If you don't have the latest Newton's, you're not doing telecom.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for People Dealing with Telecom
Harry Newton is now on the 18th Edition of his renowned dictionary. Having worked in the telecommunications industry for 4 years, I can vouch for how valuable this reference has been for me.

Newton covers all the acronyms, standard terms, slang, etc. that anyone would ever be exposed to in the telecommunications world. These are not just standard definitions. Newton goes in depth for those terms that require extensive explanation. The definition for "Frame Relay" is approximately a page and a half. Even more impressive, you come away with a solid, basic understanding of Frame Relay.

What separates Newton's from other efforts is the extensive nature of the work, and the humorous approach to writing many of the definitions. For example, Newton's definition for "Intelligent Phone" starts off with "When the Bell operating companies get bored they occasionally fantasize about applications for the networks they provide." Believe me, if you have ever had to work with a Bell operating company (Southwestern Bell, Bell South, etc.) you'll get a lot of laughs from this kind of stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply The Best
I'm not sure what more can be said in praise of Harry Newton's Telecom Dictionary, but I'll try.

This oversized book is a whopping 859 pages. I don't want to even guess at what it weighs in at. It really is more of a telecom encyclopedia than a dictionary, and goes into extensive detail describing many words, phrases, acronyms and concepts. Many of the definitions take up an entire page, or more. It is absolutely crammed with useful information.

As if being the largest telecom dictionary isn't enough, Harry packs the book with his own style of telecom humor and wit. It's probably the only dictionary you will find that will make you laugh out loud. Harry is the premiere comedian of the telecom industry, and provides the only dictionary in the world that you will be tempted to read from cover to cover. Harry's writing style is uniquely his, and actually makes learning boring telecom definitions a fun experience.

Besides general telecom definitions, you will also find many terms relating to computers, computer telephony, the Internet, investing, electronics and more. An amazing accomplishment. You will not only understand what a word means when you read the definition, but will likely understand the concept behind it as well. This book goes well beyond the definitions provided in any other dictionary of its type. No other dictionary in the telecom, computing or electronics industries comes anywhere close to Harry Newton's Telecom Dictionary in either scope or depth.

The book is currently in its 18th edition, and is still going strong. It has three brand-new sections: 119 Best Money-Saving Tips: How to Save on Telecom, PC and Internet Expenses, Hot and New in Telecom: Best Ideas, Products and Industry Directions, and Disaster Planning: How to Maximize the Reliability of Your Telecom Network. This book truly belongs on the bookshelf of everyone in the telecom industry. It's worth every penny, and is pound-for-pound the best telecom book I have ever read.

Book Description

Grid computing is applying the resources of many computers in a network to a single problem at the same time

Grid computing appears to be a promising trend for three reasons:
(1) Its ability to make more cost-effective use of a given amount of computer resources,
(2) As a way to solve problems that can't be approached without an enormous amount of computing power
(3) Because it suggests that the resources of many computers can be cooperatively and perhaps synergistically harnessed and managed as a collaboration toward a common objective.

A number of corporations, professional groups, university consortiums, and other groups have developed or are developing frameworks and software for managing grid computing projects. The European Community (EU) is sponsoring a project for a grid for high-energy physics, earth observation, and biology applications. In the United States, the National Technology Grid is prototyping a computational grid for infrastructure and an access grid for people. Sun Microsystems offers Grid Engine software. Described as a distributed resource management tool, Grid Engine allows engineers at companies like Sony and Synopsys to pool the computer cycles on up to 80 workstations at a time.

  • "the Grid" is a very hot topic generating broad interest from research and industry (e.g. IBM, Platform, Avaki, Entropia, Sun, HP)
  • Grid architecture enables very popular e-Science projects like the Genome project which demand global interaction and networking
  • In recent surveys over 500f Chief Information Officers are expected to use Grid technology this year
Grid Computing:
  • Features contributions from the major players in the field
  • Covers all aspects of grid technology from motivation to applications
  • Provides an extensive state-of-the-art guide in grid computing

This is essential reading for researchers in Computing and Engineering, physicists, statisticians, engineers and mathematicians and IT policy makers.

    Book Description

This book is intended for designers and would-be designers of digital communication systems. The general approach of the book is to extract the common principles underlying a range of media and applications and present them in a unified framework. Specifically, we treat the transport of bit streams from one geographical location to another over various physical media, such as wire pairs, coaxial cable, optical fiber, and radio. We also treat multiple-access channels, where there are potentially multiple transmitters and receivers sharing a common medium.Digital Communication is relevant to the design of a variety of systems, including voice and video digital cellular telephone, digital CATV distribution, wireless LANs, digital subscriber loop, metallic ethernet, voiceband data modems, and satellite communication systems.

New in this Third Edition: + New material on recent advances in wireless communications, error-control coding, and multiuser communications has been added. As a result, two new chapters have been added, one on the theory of MIMO channels, and the other on diversity techniques for mitigating fading.+ Our treatment of error-control coding has been rewritten to reflect the current state of the art.+ Chapters 6 through 9 from the Second Edition have been reorganized and streamlined to highlight pulse-amplitude modulation, becoming the new chapters 5 through 7.+ We have increased the readability by relegating many of the more detailed derivations to appendices and exercise solutions, both of which are included in the book.+ Exercises, problems, and solutions have been revised and expanded.+ Three chapters from the previous edition have been moved to the book's Web site to make room for the new material. This book is suitable as a first-year graduate textbook, and should also be of interest to many industry professionals. We have attempted to make the book attractive to both audiences through the inclusion of many practical examples and a practical flavor in the choice of topics. additional information from the Second Edition, other supplementary materials, useful links, a problem solutions manual, and errata. To limit the length we have been selective in topics covered and in the depth of coverage. For example, the coverage of advanced information, coding, and detection theory is limited to those aspects directly relevant to the design of digital communication systems. This emphasis on topics important to designers results in more detailed treatment of some topics than is traditional in academic textbooks, for example in our coverage of synchronization (timing and carrier recovery).Notes to the Instructor: This book can be used as a textbook for advanced undergraduates, or for a first course in digital communication for graduate students. We presume a working knowledge of transforms, linear systems, and random processes, and review these topics in chapters 2 and 3 at a depth suitable only for establishing notation. This treatment also serves to delimit the background assumed in the remainder of the book, or with more advanced students can be omitted or made optional. We include a more detailed treatment of basic topics important to digital communication but which may not be familiar to a first-year graduate student, including signal space (chapter 2), Markov chains and their analysis (chapter 3), Poisson processes and shot noise (chapter 3), the basic boundaries of communication from information theory (chapter 4), and maximum-likelihood detection and the Viterbi algorithm (chapter 7). These treatments are self-contained and assume only the basic background mentioned earlier. These basic topics can be covered at the beginning of the course, or delayed until the first time they are used. Our own preference is the latter, since the immediate application of the techniques serves as useful reinforcement. The core of the book consists of the treatment of modulation, detection and equalization (chapters 5 through 9), MIMO channels (chapters 10 and 11), coding (chapters 12 and 13), and synchronization (chapters 14 through 16). These topics are covered in considerable depth. After completing a course based on this book, students should be highly motivated to take advanced courses in information theory, algebraic coding, detection and estimation theory, and communication networks, and will have a prior appreciation of the utility of these topics. There is sufficient material for two semesters, although it can easily be used for a single-semester course by selectively covering topics. At Georgia Tech we use this book for a one-semester graduate course that has as prerequisites undergraduate courses in systems and transforms and probability and random processes. We do not presume any prior exposure to signal space, Markov chains, or the Poisson process. In this course we rely on the students to review Chapters 1 through 4, and we cover Chapters 5 through 8 and Chapter 10 and 11 in lecture. Chapters 9, 12 and 13 are skipped because adaptive filtering and error-control coding techniques are covered in other courses. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book
This book has great breadth as well as depth. I am in sticker shock over the price, however!

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a good buy
Although it is a 2nd ed., still too many mistakes. Very few explaination. Ridiculously expensive. Not a good buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book with some publisher generated anchors!
This is a great book and should be widely available as a reference/textbook. Unfortunately, it is difficult to get a copy of the book and the book is ridiculously priced for a student (and therefore is unlikely to be purchased by a library). It's a shame that such a great piece of work isn't more easily purchased online or directly from the publisher. I've tried to buy a second copy of the book after finding the first in a book store and am still waiting for it to arrive after ordering the book two months ago.

I would ask the authors to demand, from the publisher, that this outstanding book be made more accessible.

As for the content of the book, the selection of topics and coverage are no less than outstanding. The authors will discuss a topic and then provide an example to illustrate how the topic is applied. Most, if not all, of the fundamental topics in digital communications are covered. Well documented references are provided if the reader desires more information than what's given in the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good source of knowledge...very practical
Used at many universities such as Georgia Tech, and as reference as in Valencia Polytechnic University, this is a must read book for every engineer in the world of communications...later it will serve you as a great reference, a good volume for your library. Wish there were more book like this one!! Adeu!

5-0 out of 5 stars No frills, fast pace and for SmartTrust developers
Because 3G is on the verge of being rolled out in the US by major carriers I purchased this book to explore how to best integrate the next generation cell phone with system management information for our data center. Although this book will work with GSM phones as well, our company is standardized on a carrier that will be making 3G available, so if you're using GSM my comments will also apply.

This book will get you started in mobile development quickly if you're using or going to use the SmartTrust toolset, which I highly recommend. This book is about those tools, so if you are not going to use them don't get this book.

The authors do not mess around. They introduce the basics, then very quickly jump into design, development and testing. If you're a developer you'll appreciate the lack of fluff and the fast pace. The book lives up to its title in all respects and is outstanding for anyone who needs realistic information about developing mobile applications using proven tools and techniques. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good book, but can be better
Good study material for new Symbian and Series 60 developers as well as experienced ones. It covers as much as possible in limited 700 pages, from Symbian OS fundamentals, GUI design to more advanced topics, such as ECom, advanced communication technologies. It is kind of nice to provide tips and hints on how to avoid programming mistakes and how to design and develop applications for mobile devices. Last chapter even covers the testing and debugging, which is really useful. It will be better and helpful if example programs can be included in a CD along with the development enviorment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Symbian C++ development based on Series 60
For developers looking to get a more and deeper information on developing Symbian C++ based games and applications I highly recommend this book. It covers lots of essentials from the Series 60 based architectures, Symbian OS fundamentals and Series 60 specific UI components.

I haven't read this book from cover to cover, but I use most of the examples in my work daily and this book is mandatory for every single Symbian C++ developer developing applications to Series 60 device family... for beginners, this book provides easy to start section starting from SDK installation and emulators and for more advanced programmers, this is mandatory reference library which you can use for checking how to use different kind of classes and methods (functions).

    Great book, afterall :-)

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple but powerful book
I am new to Symbian C++ programming and find myself referring to this book almost daily. It is useful for learning high level concepts and then for digging into the details. The examples are easy to follow. Everything that I have needed to find out has been covered in the book so far. Congratulations to the authors for being so thorough.

This is the worst book I was every forced to buy for my undergraduate degree. Bad examples, bad questions, just a very poor book. The idea of the class is good, but the way the information is presented is awful and you do not learn anything. The book assumes you know everything about circuits because it doesn't explain anything. Trust me VERY VERY BAD book from learning prospective.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do not rely on this book as an introduction!
If you are new to communications, you may want to get a more in-depth exploration of the topics Couch covers (particularly the mathematics). I took this course at the University of Florida (although not with Couch). We were required to buy this book, but the instructor I had DIDN'T USE IT (school politics, I guess).

I didn't find it very helpful...not nearly enough examples.

2-0 out of 5 stars Digital and Analog Communication Systems
This book is not clearly written. The discussion on Fourier and other math topics is a review, but if you knew those topics before you will be confused by the time you finish. There is often too little information in the text to answer the questions at the end of the chapter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Book for General knowledge
You can find themes that dose not appear in other books. Every fragment is followed by an example. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More than a good reference for practitioners
This book is a useful guide to those that want to learn about CDMA systems, as well as a reference to practitioners. It is well organized and not only it covers lot of ground, but it does so without sacrificing discussion of the details.

I found this book to be more than about summarizing the 1000s of pages of the cdma2000 specifications. It gives insight of the rationale behind protocol design and explains the trade-offs involved. System implementation details and algorithms are explained. The chapters on power control, handovers, and packet data operation are well written and very insightful. The chapter on the signaling layer has useful call flows and is an excellent reference. I found the last chapter on end-to-end network operations a bit unique and very useful. But I must say that this chapter could use some more details in the text describing the call flows.

If you need a reference book on cdma2000 or if you are new to this technology and need a guide book, this book is the best available in my opinion.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Way to Learn About cdma2000
The cdma2000 system is enormously complicated. The standards are publically available---all many thousands of pages of them. (Amazon does not like URLs in reviews but if you go to 3gpp2 dot com you can find the standards.) The standards are designed to tell the reader what must be implemented to conform with the standard---they generally lack any discussion of context or motivation. For example, the standards just present the rules for open loop power control without explanation. (See Physical Standard for cdma2000 Spread Spectrum Systems, Release A, Open Loop Output Power When Transmitting on the Enhanced Access Channel.)

In contrast, this book provides three pages of explanation and motivation before presenting the open loop power control algorithm. That explanation is well written and easy to follow.

The information in this book can be absorbed much more quickly and easily than in the standards. I suspect that many who have to interpert those standards will buy a copy of this book to serve the role of "cheat sheet" or "cliff notes" or "experienced guide" to the wilds of the standards themselves.

I recommend this book to anyone who wishes to understand how cdma2000 works. The book assumes that the reader is generally familiar with communications engineering but does not presuppose knowledge of mobile communications. Although the book is targeted at engineering professionals, many sections of the book are accessible without substantial prior engineering knowledge.

Modern wireless systems are one of the wonders of our age---they are invisible cathedrals in the sky. This book provides an excellent route for one to gain an appreciation of the complexity and beauty of these systems. This book is also an excellent tool for engineers who work with cdma2000 systems or otherwise need to understand cdma2000.

4-0 out of 5 stars Timely Book
This is a very timely book for those in the wireless communication industry involved in the design and testing of cdma2000 1x and 1xEV-DV products (chips, handsets, base stations).

It not only covers cdma2000 1x at a level of detail that is not available in other books on cdma2000, but also goes into the details of 1x EV-DV, which is currently being designed by various companies worldwide.

In particular, the chapters on Layer 2 and 3 protocol, power control, handoff, and packet data operation cover material not available in other textbooks. The authors also explain the reasoning behind design choices in cdma2000/1xEV-DV, which I found helpful.

Compared with Lee and Miller's "CDMA System Engineering Handbook", this textbook covers a broader scope of material, but with a less analytical approach.

Overall, highly recommend this textbook. I found it to be the best and most accurate one dealing with the practical issues of cdma2000 and 1xEV-DV. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars On the whole, I was disappointed.
I was looking for an introductory book on the business of television. This book assumes that you know a few things already. It explains beginners concepts but it doesn't go out of its way to clearly explain them. I didn't understand the relationship between affiliates and networks. This book claims to explain it clearly, but it doesn't. Right now I don't even know where the affiliates get their money from. I was a bit disappointed because the other reviews showed promise, and the title too.

The best words to describe it are, as used above, a 'resource', a 'comprehensive' and 'practical' guide. The book really doesn't go out of its way to explain concepts to you. If you are looking for an introduction to the business of television, this is probably not the best place to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars Stolen 3 times... This book is hot!!!
This book is so hot that it's been stolen from my office library 3 times. I'm on my 4th purchase of this book. I felt like I could have an intellegent conversation about any aspect of the television business after using this book. It is my main resource for getting quick answers that are easy to understand. This is required reading for those getting started and a great resource for those that have been in the industry a while. It also includes a computer disk containing forms such as U.S. Copyright registration and others found in the book that you can import to your word processor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Imagine the Future, Study the Past
This Business of Television is a landmark volume in our practice (entertainment industry economic forecasting) for three reasons.

Reason # 3: it is incredible that guys of this stature would take the time to compile such an essential and complete perspective of the television business. Goodenough, a seasoned entertainment lawyer, law professor, and a scholar pioneering the study of law and evolutionary biology, brings the structure and rigor, while Blumenthal, a prolific TV, multimedia, and online entertainment producer and businessman brings the been-there-done-that street savvy.

Reason # 2: it is, after all, the business that pays for the content (the subscriber, pay-per-view, advertising, syndication, and the latest, e-commerce revenue models) and the content that drives the migration to new technology (streaming media webcasting and video-on-demand, interactive TV, and wireless). The clear understanding of the financial systems supporting television and video entertainment offered by Oliver and Howard in this book facilitates the modeling of future monetary transactions.

Reason # 1: video programming spread from broadcast to cable and then to satellite in one generation. The last decade found it spreading to the PC via CD-ROM, DVD, and broadband Internet. In the future it will be found on our cell phones, wristwatches, car seat backs, and refrigerators. There will be innovations in business arrangements along the way, but those who cannot converse in the basic economics will be doomed.

This segues into a jacket quote by Morty Morton, former producer of the Late Show with David Letterman, who remarked, "This Business of Television has gotten me through years of moderate success in the TV business. I'm now ready to burn the damn thing and open a restaurant."

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is gold!
Our start-up entertainment company has used the first edition as our essential reference book. We have not found anything else like it. We are excited about ordering the second edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid and comprehensive.
The first edition was handy, detailed, and filled with suggestions on where to find further information. I'm glad the revised edition includes a disk. Highly recommended for anyone in the television, video, or CD-ROM production business. And not a bad price, considering the cost of other texts. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW

    5-0 out of 5 stars Must-have book!
This is actually a review of the 20th edition -- Amazon is still selling the 19th edition as of this writing.

The book is essential for anyone wanting to understand and construct antennas, without a lot of math. It covers HF, VHF, and UHF antennas, along with sections on special-purpose antennas.

The only real complaint I have is that the material is not organized in textbook fashion, which often makes information hard to find. For example, information about vertical antenna theory is scattered among three or four chapters. And the book's index is not terribly helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars HAM's to Engineers Antenna Reference: Highly Recommended!
This is a great ham reference, for anybody who builds, designs
and puts up antennas. Its not just for the HAM , it also can be for the shortwave listener that has a pricey receiver, and needs a serious antenna. Attn: serious FM DXers:(Sporadic E theory in here!), and also for the AM listener for loop antennas. LOWFERS!: There is a special section for
you also in this book, in page 6-35 to 6-39. There is also some great stuff for the student that needs some extra information on the how radio waves travel. Also there is a EME section in here also for space hams, that use our moon as a reflector to
get somewhere else in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is essential
No matter what you think of the ARRL, if you are a member or or not, they do provide the ham community with some invaliable resources. This book is one of them. It includes information on how to safely work on a tower, how to build antena, computer modling, RF exposure limits, antena theory, and a lot more. Plus it includes as CD-ROM with some of the programs mentioned in the text.

A must for all new hams, or anyone who wants to know more about antena. For hams who already have previous editions, you may want it just for the software.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ARRL Antenna Book
Although this book is angled toward radio amateurs ("ham" radio operators) it would be of interest to all interested in antennas.

It's updated yearly by hams and covers the field from theory to actual construction projects. In addition to antennas it covers transmission lines and antenna tuners (transmatch devices).

I'm buying a new one this year. My 8-year-old one is getting tattered from continual use, so it's time to get a fresh one. However, they are so good I save the old ones too. ... Read more
