Book Description

This is an exciting revision of John Kraus' classic book Antennas, which has been long known as the "Antenna Bible".A new co-author, Ronald Marhefka has joined the author team for this revison. Many new, modern applications have been added-thus the title change to Antennas with All Applications. As well, the references have been updated to include recent additons to the literature.

Additionally, the book has been reorganized to make it more user-friendly for both students and professionals. The book now covers the fundamentals of various antennas and concepts in the first half of the book and then gets into more details on those same topics later in the book. This allows a one-semester course to just cover the fundamentals if desired, and a professional to focus on advanced topics if he or she wants. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Needs a rewrite
I found some aspects of the text, especially chapters 6, 13 and 14, to be problematic. I thought the approach to the exposition of the theory of a given topic to be somewhat choppy. Much text is devoted to finding simplified expressions which can be distracting and impedes understanding. In a few instances, the reader is directed to external sources to get foundational details. And, often, the result presented applies only in special cases, such as, in the far field, or for electrically small antennas, or for antennas an odd integer multiple of a half wavelength. For example, in the section on self-impedance of a thin linear antenna (13-5), the statement is made that it is "common practice to shorten the antenna a few percent to make X11=0." Yet the expression presented for X11 is the sine integral which is non-zero everywhere except at Si(0). So, absent thorough exposition of the theory, this is not helpful to those interested in the general case.

I believe this book would be vastly improved if a systematic approach, in the context of electromagnetic theory, is adopted for exposition of the material. Development of new topics should begin with first principles. Sections building on earlier sections should include appropriate back references. References to external papers or earlier editions should not be used as substitute for exposition of details as these sources are generally inaccessible to the reader. Recognizing the accessibility of powerful mathematics software, much of the material dealing with simplifying assumptions could be edited out in favor of more complete exposition of the theory.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical book
We had this as a reference book for a course in Microwave engineering and was used in a design problem. This is not your leisure book that you can just browse! You have to have advanced calculus/electromagnetism background to understand the concepts.

The book covers all the basic antennae theory and types to topics ranging to radar design.

This is a must have for any RF design engineer.

Since most of the RF jobs in US are with defense and companies like Lockheed Martin and you have to be US citizen to get such jobs, I had to opt for computer networks for graduate studies in US, otherwise I'd have ended up as a RF designer myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most excellent book
I found this book to be very helpful and to the point on mostof the material. I thought the math, when given, was quitestraightforward, and the author was sure to explain the actual meaning of the math in quick to understand terms. I have only had this book for two days, and have already been able to walk away with a good bit of knowledge END

4-0 out of 5 stars A Slightly Dissenting Review
I would normally rate such a book as five stars, but I've given it four stars to draw some attention that this book is not so easily comprehended as two preceding reviewers suggest. Indeed, the book is well written and organized. However, I think the level of mathematics used is that of advanced calculus. I believe this book is intended for a senior EE or EE graduate student. However, it is not all mathematics and there is still much to be learned about antennas from the book without having had exposure to some of the mathematics used. If you are in doubt, you might consider an alternative before purchasing this book, or at least purchase it with the thought of returning it within a 30 day inspection period.

5-0 out of 5 stars An most excellent text on Antennas
From fundamental antenna concepts to the characteristics and design curves for all sorts of practical antennas, this book is a must have for anyone having anything to do with antennas. It is clearly written, contains excellent diagrams, interesting photographs of historical significance, and the author's personal account of his discoveries and contributions to this field. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for wireless designers!
A must have for any wireless designer. The author's ability to clearly explain fundamental RF concepts makes this a perfect book for any student of radio. His real world examples, also makes this an indispensable tool for the accomplished professional. The pictures and graphs are extremely insightful and clearly illustrate the points that the author is trying to make.

The author's ability to break down complex technical concepts makes this a great book but the practical insights, into the real-world constraints of both indoor and outdoor networks, makes this book a must have for the engineering professional.I have not found one resource like this that covers so many practical issues faced by wireless designers today. For people designing and installing WiFi networks, this book provides a single resource for the propagation characteristics of common building materials. Carefully researched and clearly explained this is undoubtedly the best book I have found on modern day wireless and 802.11 networks.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful, inellectual and entertaining
Dan Dobkin has accomplished something close to impossible: an extremely useful, intelligent and entertaining book on Wireless Networks. This book is a must for wireless network designers or those just interested in how they operate.

The book is filled with extremely useful technical information on wireless networks and all of the building blocks. His real world network application examples compliment the detailed technical derivations.Dobkin writes this book as if he is telling a story without the stuffiness of typical technical books. The Illustrations are very well thought out and help to get the complex ideas across to the reader.Dobkin adds interesting historical facts and comical quips to the detailed technical discussions to make the journey through this book interesting and rewarding. He manages to convey a sense of enthusiasm for technology throughout the text.

Very few authors manage to write such useful technical books without putting the reader to sleep.Dan Dobkin is one of the few to have accomplished this feat.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and look forward to his next creation!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book around for applied wireless networking
Probably the best book on the market for anyone affiliated with designing and/or deploying wireless networks. The book is very well written. 5-0 out of 5 stars Brier and Hurley Get Wired!
If you work in a multimedia company or a high tech multimedia laboratory, you probably have a systems administrator and lots of eager students of engineering that can help you design a media and data network infrastructure. However, most of us users who would like to design a network for security, multimedia and computing in a home or small business do not have a systems administrator. Brier and Hurley give an enlightened short course on media, data and electrical networking of your home and small business in Smart Homes for Dummies.

The big vision outlined in this book is simplicity afforded by thinking ahead. Save money and space by designing a network which accesses one main computer server; one digital TV; one VCR; one CD player; one radio; one internet or cable service line for multiple users within the home or business. All these media sources are routed via cables, modulators, preamplifiers and switch panels to each room so that users can choose what they want to play on their computer, speakers and video screens. They inform the reader about 'multi-zone' or multiple channel receiving and transmitting devices needed to to push your wired house to full capacity now and in the future. Costs, esthetics, and how to anticipate future technologies are considered. This book is a pleasant read and a fast way to get up to speed on how to 'Get to Wired'. Think of it like an adventure tour of networking wonderland by Bill and Ted. At the same time this is a most excellent (easy to use) source of reference tables for those of us who prefer to bypass the 'Bill sheet' and get something done.

5-0 out of 5 stars Really helped us update our home office
Like a lot of people, we've spent a lot of time and effort on technology in our home both for entertainment and work purposes. The first edition of Smart Homes for Dummies was a great help, but we were really waiting for the second edition, as we wanted to upgrade a number of things, especially wireless. One thing that was really helpful was that the authors offered several ways to do things and they explained the advantages and disadvantages of each approach. They also did a great job explaining all of the jargon and "buzzwords" you see when you're shopping for this stuff, without being too simplistic. If you want to network your home or upgrade your network, I highly recommend you read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart Review
I have read this book in its whole entirety. It is very well written, thorough, and sectionally organized. It covers a diverse range of interesting issues in relation to the title's subject. The approach to reading this book can be tackled from a stand-alone-chapter format, and/or in a chapter-linking format, and/or obviously as a whole book format.

5-0 out of 5 stars Smart Homes for Dummies Second Edition
If you would like to know more about electronics in the home this is the perfect book. Whether you are an expert or are looking in to having things installed in your home you can easily read and understand everything. Also the book is a great reference for companies and their products.

5-0 out of 5 stars This was a terrific help...
We just moved into a new home and were totally overwhelmed and confused when we tried to figure out what we needed to put in both cable modem for high speed internet access and DirecTV with TiVo. I found Smart Homes for Dummies and read it. It really helped me understand how to accomplish this. Also, as a result, I was able to ask our contractor "smart" questions to keep the costs within our budget and get what we needed for a "futureproof" system. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bingo - the typos are (a,most) gone
I finally got hold of the second edition....and the typos are gone - well, almost....:)

2-0 out of 5 stars Has potential, but way too many typos and errors
This is a very unique book. It presents a range of material relevant to dsp and communications that you will not likely find together in any other book. I think the proofs and explanations are pretty clear, and the book is very readable. Although my math background is limitied to the math courses I've taken within my EE curriculum, I found the math in this book to be accessible and understandable.

What brings it down, however, is the absolutely insane number of errors and typos. The errata for the SECOND printing is 43 pages long! It's so thick that I can't even staple it together with a regular stapler. And that's just the mistakes that they've identified. Who knows how many others lurk in the text undetected.

I can understand a page or two of corrections, that is typical of most EE textbooks. And I can understand that since this is a first edition, there will be more mistakes than for a typical textbook which has been through several editions. But 43 pages worth of mistakes is unacceptable in my opinion. This material is difficult enough without mistakes in the proofs and explanations.

Without the huge errata I would have happily given this book 5 stars, but for now I give it 2.

5-0 out of 5 stars A different treatment of Signal Processing ...
This book deals with the actual Mathematical foundations of Signal Processing algorithms that are used in a wide array of applications (like beamforming, communications, voice recognition etc..). It starts with very good introduction of Vector Spaces and Linear Algebra, and follows it with sections on Detection/Estimation Theory, Optimization Methods and Iterative/Recursive Algorithms. In my opinion, the most important feature of the book that makes it impressive is its wide coverage of topics and the different angle (mathematical rigor combined with proper explanations) at which these topics are approached. Note that this book will make more sense to an advanced student in EE rather than a beginner

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful companion....
Having taken Dr. Moon's class in Fall 2000. I find this book to be a wonderful complement to his teaching style. The authors work on the basics of matrix and vector techniques in some detail, though never losing sight of the main objective of introducing the topics in a way suitable for a student of Signal Processing. The book also covers some advanced topics in iterative methods in SP, as also building on its solid base to touch upon Detection/Estimation theory. The high point of the book is the gradual, but fast paced and logical progression from the basics to more specialized topics, and the exhaustive set of examples in the accompanying CD-ROM. Also, the historical tit-bits which the author peppers us with (as Dr. Moon would do so many times in class!!) makes for some delightful and insightful reading. This book is a must for every Signal Processing student as also for anyone looking for computationally sound content on some topics on Communications. A caveat, though, beware of the typos, especially in the formulae, which will force you to keep looking up in the errata, time and again....And make sure you have some basic knowledge of MATLAB before you begin this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars The errata runs to 42 pages...
DSP involves a lot of maths. This volume brings together all the necessary foundations in one place. A good book to have in your library.Beware though of the numerous typos. The errata runs to 42 pages...

Buy the second edition not this one.

That is why I gave 4 stars to a 5 star book ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent and informative book on digital cinema!
This book is excellent in describing the new revolution in digital cinema. I found it to be extremely helpful, descriptive, and informative. It is wonderfully worded and written with knowledge. I believe this book to be one of the best out there when it comes to this topic. A must-read for directors, producers, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read for Digital MovieMakers!
This is a good introduction to all the big changes happening in moviemaking and movie projection.
Those changes all involve the move from film to digital that's allowing people who don't have millions of
dollars to make movies anyway with "prosumer" cameras-provided they know what they're doing and have
a good script.

I especially like Chapter Five, which explains all the latest digital cinema cameras-both the expensive ones and the ones indy filmmakers are using to break into the industry.

The book also has interviews with different filmmakers that gives a varied picture of how digital is enabling indys to make inexpensive movies while also enabling big studio filmmakers to make even more amazing big, expensive movies.

If you ever wanted to make a movie, now is the time. Anyone who's into filmmaking and digital media should read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!!!!!
To say that the Master Handbook of Acoustics is an 'incredibly comprehensive work' it's like saying that the Beatles were 'some band from Liverpool'. Without a doubt, a must-have. Better than that, buy two and enlighten a friend! :-)

Now really, this is the absolute definitive book on acoustics, covering topics ranging from sound propagation to room acoustics to absortion, diffusion, refraction, reflection, diffraction and everything else you can think of.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not a Handbook of Acoustics
If you believe that the world of acoustics only consists of rooms and concert halls, this is the introductory book for you.

Otherwise, the treatment of contemporary topics is piecemeal. The introductory material is not sufficient to inform the more recent elements (the chapter on digital sound is laughable).

It is well worth the money for room acoustics. It should indicate that specific focus in the title. No where will you find psychoacoustics, instrument acoustics, microphone issues, and true recording issues.

4-0 out of 5 stars easy to read, easy to understand
I like this book: it's mainly about acoustic principles and room acoustics. It's easy to read (even for a beginner) and is not too superficial. One of the few audio books I still return to every now and then.
I would buy this book again.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very good, but...
Very good in relation to room acoustics, but almost useless out of America. The book does not acknowledge the metric system, and the chapters about construction apply to materials and construction methods used only in America.

Otherwise, a really good book at hammering the basics in your head! If only there were metric versions of the equations...

5-0 out of 5 stars This is an Outstanding Book
This is an outstanding book for anyone interested in room acoustics. My motivation as an Audiophile for purchasing this book was to answer the basic question: "Should my next audio investment be in room acoustic treatments, and if so what are the considerations involved?" This book methodically breaks down every aspect of the behavior of sound, and how that behavior affects and is percieved by the listener. Reverberation, reflection, dispersion, diffraction, absorption, spectral analyses, modal analyses, room topology, etc., etc... It's all there. An absolute must have for any Audiophile. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Well written and easy to understand
"Handheld Usability" is well-organized, articulate, and surveys all of the existing technologies for this medium. The author clearly carefully researched every angle of design for handheld devices. His research is neatly organized into consistent, well-thought-out sections.

It is especialy helpful to see how Weiss applies traditional HCI design strategies to small computing devices. He provides ample examples throughout this well-illustrated, easy to follow volume.

The appendix on Paper Prototyping Palm OS was particularly helpful, with its photographic illustrations and clear instructions on how to produce a paper prototype. I have looked for a long time to locate a book on paper prototyping, and this is the first one available. He covers the topic fairly, presenting its strengths and weaknesses, and gives good instruction on the technique.

This book is easy to read, written in an instructive, helpful style like a good "hands on" textbook. There is a companion web site, handheldusability.info, which has additional materials that supplement the book nicely.

    I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Was helpful for my final year dissertation
This was the only book specific to handheld/mobile devices that discussed usability testing.

It is divided into short, concise sections that are easy to read and understand. The sections form a good basis on how to approach designing and testing a system. It has some very good pointers. The only thing was that it was too short!

The book was very, very helpful but it wasn't long enough and doesn't provide working examples. It just tells you the points that you should be considering when you are building a usable system. It doesn't go too in depth on any of the sections either.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential
Zipf's law states that common words are very common, and that uncommon words are combinations of uncommon words. For example if you start typing the letters 'th' then you are probably trying to write the word 'the' rather than 'theologian'. Applying this simple insight to mobile phones gave us predictive text entry, where a small dictionary allows the phone to guess the word that the user is most likely trying to enter. For example if you press the keys '82' while entering a text message on a modern phone, the phone will predict 'the' as your word. This invention allows QWERTY-snobs like me to approach the speeds of Finnish teenagers in tapping text messages on a mobile phone.

Such innovation is just amusingly clever on a PC, but on the small screens of handheld devices, it is essential. A good user interface converts a small device from a limiting gadget to a useful tool. European consumers' 'wapathetic' response to WAP-enable phones was due to over hyping by the telecommunications industry, but also poor usability of the devices.
So a textbook on the topic is certainly appropriate.

Handheld usability defines handheld devices as highly portable machines that can operate with no cables and can be operated within one's hand. In addition, they must either allow the addition of applications or support internet connectivity. So the book's focus includes handheld computers (such as Palm-powered machines and Pocket PCs) and mobile phones (with WAP, i-mode or email connectivity) but excludes devices such as music players.

Naturally the discussion includes details of devices that are obsolete. Such is usually the case with any discussion of the details in information technology. But the principles are timeless and the practices will remain practical.
Perhaps the most useful chapter is the one on prototyping. Weiss' advice is that this should be done with a pen and several pieces of paper. For example the designer would draw the first screen on the paper. The user would then say what he or she expects to see on interacting with each element of the "screen". During this feedback, the designer would draw the next screen, and again ask the user what he or she expects. This technique is of course cheap but I was surprised by its effectiveness. No doubt Weiss' clients also found it useful.

If your team is designing applications for handheld devices, consider hiring Weiss. If you cannot afford that, buy his book. You cannot afford not to.

    Don't buy this book.
I cannot find any usabiltiy testing technique in this book. Just explain what PDA and Palms are and all thing we already knew. Alsom appendix is too long.
I don't want to know Palm history. Why author explain detail about each funtion of Palm or PDA?
    Save your money!

I am an experienced interface designer who has never designed for a handheld. So, when I faced a new project that would be deployed on a handheld, I looked here to further my education. This is the only book I could find that is specific to handhelds.

When I was considering this book I read seven glowing reviews, and one total pan. The pan got it right. This book may be more useful for someone who knows very little about interaction design, usability testing, prototyping, and all that, and who isn't interested in gaining more than a superficial understanding of these topics. (If you are new to usability design, you'll find a much better place to start with Mayhew's "The Usability Engineering Lifecycle: A Practitioner's Handbook for User Interface Design.") If, however, you are a usability professional looking for insight on how you need to think differently now that your screen is the size of a Post-it note, wait for the next book to be written. I could have written this book, and the sum of my handheld experience is that I own a Palm and a cell phone. ... Read more

Don't expect handholding in Cisco Routers for IP Routing as it explains the Internet Protocol (IP) suite and how to implement it with Cisco hardware and software. The key components needed to keep a network online are presented--addressing, subnetting, bridging, and routing--but this book assumes readers are generally familiar with the Cisco Internetwork Operating System (IOS) command-line environment, so it doesn't spend much time on the early familiarization process.

The bulk of each chapter contains practical information for setting up systems and solving problems, including lots of procedures and plenty of illustrative router output, plus insights on good design and administration practice. Readers will also find conceptual, hands-off material explaining what the various protocols do and how they do it.

Cisco Routers for IP Routing is rich in prose and presents complex topics with some fine conceptual diagrams. However, it explains only enough to help you understand the practical material that follows. For a really thorough understanding of IP concepts, supplement this manual with Thomas A. Ok. So you've got all the Cisco Press Books. And you think what good is one little black book going to make. This is one of the most practical books on Cisco so far. The other one written from a practical approach was a title by McGraw-Hill.

This book is a winner. The author literally packs so much information in so few pages! unbelievable.

This book covers almost everything : Bridging, Routing protocols, Frame-Relay, Redistribution etc.

Highly Recommended. You wont be sorry. Invaluable for the CCIE Lab. Get this book plus Bruce Caslow's.

5-0 out of 5 stars A breath of fresh air!
Cisco Press makes great books, but they are very lengthy, expensive, and not very personal. It's like sitting in a college lecture..you learn a lot, but it's not always the most entertaining method.

This book sheds light on those quirky areas. I haven't finished the book yet, but I have a home lab of 4 Cisco routers and a Catalyst 5000 switch. I'm studying for my CCIE and sometimes need a different angle or approach to completely understand something.

You can't beat this book! It is second to none.. The author is a CCIE himself and so far has been the best teacher yet! Whether you are looking for on-the-job information or CCIE help, GET THIS BOOK!

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable quick reference
I have read all the theory and lengthy samples from the CiscoPress books, now I need a quick reference to perform my day-to-day task as a Network Consultant. This book provided the quickest way to know the stuff in configuring Cisco Routers. This is a valuable book for those who plan to tackle the CCIE Lab exam.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good enough to keep it as a reference.
The author did a great job of presenting the relatively basic information on IP routing as it applies to Cisco routers. You will find quite a few useful IOS commands discussed in the book that will want to keep it as a handy reference. I would also suggest looking into getting "Cisco IOS for IP Routing" by Andrew Colton. That book would take you deeper into mechanics of modern routing protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, IS-IS, BGP), along with a discussion of Cisco IOS commands.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For Filling In The Gaps, CCIE Prep
This book does an excellent job of calling small details to your attention that sometimes slide right by you when using larger books. Between this and Jeff Doyle's TCP/IP book, you'll be covered for the written exam and have a firm foundation for the lab. A must for your library and my compliments to the author! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Film biz school in a book
I couldn't believe the amount of information in this great new book. Bosko covers absolutely every angle of independent film distribution, from finding your movie's hook, to creating a presentation package, to researching and contacting the correct distributors, making a deal, and maybe, most importantly, what to do when all that fails (self distribution). Bosko never shys away from telling of his own misfortunes in this trade, and it helps the reader relate and learn as they go. Plus a huge appendix and offer from Bosko to email him direct anytime - what a great resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must-Have Movie Marketing Magic
A lot of people throw the title "guru" around, but Bosko's the real deal. As a filmmaker, if you've ever wondered how to: get press coverage, create a media kit, find an attractive title; identify your movie's hooks, locate distributors, exploit the power of the web, get audiences and distribution and actually sell your movie or video...then GET THIS BOOK! Bosko "tells all" in an easy-to-read style that gets the creative juices flowing. No filmmaker should go anywhere near a camera without reading the hard-core, straight-up instruction and advice in this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Went in a skeptic, came out a believer
Being a skeptic, I tested Mark's capsule exercises on a script I was preparing for the IFP Spotlight Award. The results were unnerving - I discovered buried treasure I didn't know I had within my story and eliminated an entire subplot that didn't service the STORY. Mark demystifies the concept of marketing, asking simple, direct questions. By asking "why would anyone want to see your film?" Mark goes past just marketing and addresses the issues that draw people to filmmaking in the first place. When I put the book down, I had a clear vision of the kind of filmmaker I want to be - and a great set of tools to get there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helped sell my film
This book is so great! I got a copy after reading a review and it lived up to every claim. The techniques in the book's "Self-Distribution" section showed me how to set up regional sales for a film that otherwise has not made any money up until this point! I can now proudly say that my DVD is available in 17 video stores in Pennslyvania and New York thanks to the tips in this book! Get Bosko's book if you want to sell your film - it is that simple.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute MUST!
Outstanding! Mark's style of writing is so engaging, down-to-earth, and motivating --I couldn't pull myself away! I've been behind the scenes on several film projects and can't believe they had the audacity to shoot without knowing what Mark shares in this book. My highlighter is nearly empty! When it comes to marketing a project, ignorance is certainly not bliss! Mark's book is an absolute MUST HAVE if you plan to DO something with your film other than show your parents! ... Read more

    Book Description

    Multi-Carrier Digital Communications

Theory and Applications of OFDM, Second Edition

Multi-carrier modulation, Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) particularly, has been successfully applied to a wide variety of digital communications applications over the past several years. OFDM has been chosen as the physical layer standard for a variety of important systems and its implementation techniques continue to evolve rapidly. This book is a valuable summary of the technology, providing an understanding of new advances as well as the present core technology.

A unified presentation of OFDM performance and implementation over a wide variety of channels, including both wireline and wireless systems, is made. This will prove valuable both to developers of such systems and to researchers and graduate students involved in analysis of digital communications.

In the interest of brevity, the authors have minimized treatment of more general communication issues. There exist many excellent texts on communication theory and technology. Only brief summaries of topics not specific to multi-carrier modulation are presented in this book where essential. As a background, it is assumed that the reader has a clear knowledge of basic fundamentals of digital communications.

    Highlights of the Second Edition

During the past few years since the publication of the first edition of this text, the technology and application of OFDM have continued their rapid pace of advancement. As a result, it became clear that a new edition of the text would be highly desirable. The new edition provides the opportunity to make those corrections and clarifications whose need became apparent from continued discussions with many readers. However, the main purpose is to introduce new topics that have come to the forefront during the past few years, and to amplify the treatment of other subject matter.

Because of the particularly rapid development of wireless systems employing OFDM, the authors introduced a section early in the text on wireless channel fundamentals. They have extended and modified their analysis of the effects of clipping, including new simulation results. A section of channel estimation has been added to the chapter on equalization. The chapter on local area networks has been greatly expanded to include the latest technology and applications. Three totally new chapters are added, on OFDM multiple access technology, on ultra wideband technology, and on WiMAX (IEEE 802.16).

    Organization of This Book

The authors begin with a historical overview of multi-carrier communications, wherein its advantages for transmission over highly dispersive channels have long been recog-nized, particularly before the development of equalization techniques. They then focus on the bandwidth efficient technology of OFDM, in particular the digital signal processing techniques that have made the modulation format practical. Several chapters describe and analyze the sub-systems of an OFDM implementation, such as clipping, synchronization channel estimation, equalization, and coding. Analysis of performance over channels with various impairments is presented.

The book continues with descriptions of three very important and diverse applications of OFDM that have been standardized and are now being deployed. ADSL provides access to digital services at several Mbps over the ordinary wire-pair connection between customers and the local telephone company central office. Digital broadcasting enables the radio reception of high-quality digitized sound and video. A unique configuration that is enabled by OFDM is the simultaneous transmission of identical signals by geographically dispersed transmitters. And, the new development of wireless LANs for multi-Mbps communications is presented in detail. Each of these successful applications required the development of new fundamental technology.

Finally, the book concludes with describing the OFDM based multiple access techniques, ultra wideband technology and WiMAX.

I agree with the first review. This book is extremely terse. It is basically only useful as a source for references. It does not hold up on its own due to the terse coverage.

3-0 out of 5 stars Overall Basics Covered...BUT with extreme brevity
This book attempts to cover all basic theory and practical of OFDM. It covers historical developments, future developments, the basic theory of OFDM, as well as concepts used with OFDM such as the equalization, pilot tones, and cyclic prefix methods. However, (partially due to the many on-going research projects in the area) most of the discussion is extremely terse. It is often necessary to look at the reference and other papers in order to get full understandings of certain topics. Hopefully as OFDM develops there will be another edition which has more depth. ... Read more

    Book Description

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a method of digital modulation in which a signal is split into several narrowband channels at different frequencies.

CDMA is a form of multiplexing, which allows numerous signals to occupy a single transmission channel, optimising the use of available bandwidth.  Multiplexing is sending multiple signals or streams of information on a carrier at the same time in the form of a single, complex signal and then recovering the separate signals at the receiving end.

Multi-Carrier (MC) CDMA is a combined technique of Direct Sequence (DS) CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) and OFDM techniques.  It applies spreading sequences in the frequency domain.

Wireless communications has witnessed a tremendous growth during the past decade and further spectacular enabling technology advances are expected in an effort to render ubiquitous wireless connectivity a reality.

This technical in-depth book is unique in its detailed exposure of OFDM, MIMO-OFDM and MC-CDMA.  A further attraction of the joint treatment of these topics is that it allows the reader to view their design trade-offs in a comparative context.

    Divided into three main parts:

Part I provides a detailed exposure of OFDM designed for employment in various applications

Part II is another design alternative applicable in the context of OFDM systems where the channel quality fluctuations observed are averaged out with the aid of frequency-domain spreading codes, which leads to the concept of MC-CDMA

Part III discusses how to employ multiple antennas at the base station for the sake of supporting multiple users in the uplink

    • Portrays the entire body of knowledge currently available on OFDM
    • Provides the first complete treatment of OFDM, MIMO(Multiple Input Multiple Output)-OFDM and MC-CDMA
    • Considers the benefits of channel coding and space time coding in the context of various application examples and features numerous complete system design examples
    • Converts the lessons of Shannon’s information theory into design principles applicable to practical wireless systems
    • Combines the benefits of a textbook with a research monograph where the depth of discussions progressively increase throughout the book

This all-encompassing self-contained treatment will appeal to researchers, postgraduate students and academics, practising research and development engineers working for wireless communications and computer networking companies and senior undergraduate students and technical managers. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For folks serious about learning network security
I purchased this book as part of the required reading for an Information Security class at UCLA. From the start the book was full of very technical and detailed information. Having little practical network experience, my first reading focused on grasping the low-hanging fruit. As I read the book a second and third time I picked up some serious knowledge. It seemed like everytime I re-read a chapter there was more there to glean. I'm now studying for the CISSP and CISA. My initial cold self-assessments returned scores in the 80%-100% range. That's without CISSP/CISA-specific studying. I attribute most of that knowledge to this book. This was money well spent!

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick & Dirty
This book appears to be a shorter, more concise version of Stallings' "Cryptography and Network Security: Principles and Practice." It has a much shorter, and therefore less complete treatment of security concepts in general and specifically cryptography. It might be good for a focused introductory course on network-level security, but there's not much there about application-level security. Overall, I found it a little terse. I like Stallings' books on networks and computer architecture better.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty good book for serious beginners
Pretty good starting book for serious beginners in the network security area. Give you an in-depth overview of cryptography (part 1) and network security (part 2). The system security (part 3) is kind of weak. Most of the discussion are rather theoretic than practical, so you need another more practical book as companion. Anyway, understanding the contents of the book will lay a solid foundation for further exploring in the network security. BTW, if you hate math, this won't be a book for you!

Rule #1. Get the Encore 1.01 update from Adobe's site. I didn't and I wasted a lot of time trying to figure out why certain features didn't work.

Rule #2. The files on the accompanying DVD must be copied to your hard drive to work! Don't waste your time scratching your head wondering why they won't open off the DVD drive.

Conclusion: Afte getting through these lessons I was able to fix all my mistakes and produce a pretty impressive DVD for my client. Of key interest to me was creating my own menus from scratch in Photoshop and these lessons made it clear enough so that I could do that.

This, like all the 'classroom in a book' series are somewhat confusing to follow, but you can muddle through and figure out what they are trying to convey, even if it means you skip a few steps.

Tip: Use hungarian naming i.e. mnu_Main, btn_Start (instead of Main, Start) so you can tell what items are menus and what are buttons, it gets confusing when you have a lot of items in your project folder. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best optical book out there for SDH and SONET. Period!
I had been struggling to find an Optical book that covered SDH in detail from a Cisco ONS perspective. Most books out there only focus on SONET. It is almost like SDH does not exist. This book covers both, SONET and SDH (in a detail you cannot imagine). It covers everything from TDM to Metro Ethernet, RPR and MPLS over SDH. Finally a solid SDH book! Thank you Mr. Alwayn and Cisco Press.

5-0 out of 5 stars Optical Network Design and Implementation
This book is probably the most comprehensive and in-depth source of information about optical networking that I have ever read. The book opens with an introduction to optical networking, discusses SONET/SDH architectures, and briefly presents all the concepts and technologies, which are covered in detailed later chapters.

The second chapter delves immediately into the details of Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) and analog signal processing. T-carrier and E-carrier hierarchies and their signaling and framing formats are examined, followed-up by a review of the ISDN BRI/PRI standard and ISDN frame formats.

The next section of the book looks at the physical characteristics of fiber optics including the materials used, physical construction of the cable, and behavioral and performance characteristics of different optical materials under differing conditions. For those interested in calculating their own measurements, refraction, power measurement, and span loss formulas are presented along with a few case studies as examples. Splicing techniques and optical connectors are also covered here. Wavelength-Division Multiplexing (WDM) (both coarse and dense) and various dispersion compensation techniques finish up this section.

Chapters 5 and 6 cover SONET and SDH architectures respectively. This is a fairly thorough examination of the two standards and includes a detailed look at the electrical and optical signals, SONET/SDH technology layers, framing, transmission overhead, multiplexing, error reporting, topologies and topology protection strategies, to name just a few! Packet ring technologies such as gigabyte Ethernet and Multi-service Provisioning Platform (MSPP) are also presented in this section for those applications where end-to-end Ethernet framing is desirable.

The Cisco product lines for SONET and SDH platforms are presented next, with a fairly in-depth look at the Cisco ONS 15454 which is positioned as Cisco's most versatile and widely used multi-service add/drop multiplexer (ADM). Configuration options for control, alarm, electrical, optical, and Ethernet modules are examined along with an introduction to Cisco's Transport Controller (CTC), a graphical application for provisioning and managing optical networks.

Chapters 9-11 provide detailed, over 300 pages worth, of explanations and examples for configuring the ONS 15454 for SONET MSSP, SDH MSPP, and Ethernet over SONET & SDH. Step by step directions for different configurations utilizing CTC, and accompanying screen shots, make for an easily understandable provisioning and configuration process.

Overall, this book serves as a welcome addition to any technical bookshelf. Whether a seasoned technical expert looking for a good reference book, or a beginner looking to learn about optical networking technologies, this book is well written for both audiences. This book earns a place as one of my personal favorites. For those looking to test their knowledge on the material covered in this book, chapter 12 provides a selection of insightful and challenging case studies. ... Read more
