5-0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and thorough book
Myself and my colleague are both currently final year civil engineering students at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa and have been using this book for the past year. We found it to be very comrehensive and easy to apply to relevant practical models. A five star rating would shyly describe this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent reference
This is a book written for apprentice operating engineers. As such, it teaches the basics of road survey, grading, compaction, pipe laying, stakeout, drainage. It goes into detail on how to read survey stakes, mark and read witness lath, calculate differences in height, read and use a hand level, stake slopes, layout a subdivison, find the bottom elevation of pipelines, proper compaction of road base, and just about anything else a road worker could think of. This is an easy to use paperback book with many drawings which help explain the text. I can't tell you how useful this book has been to me.For those readers that are involved with excavation, survey, inspection (me), contracting, this book IS MUST HAVE.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Handbook on bread and butter civil engineering
I have read the first edition of this book and it answered all my questions and then some. This book is ideal for young engineers who don't have field experience. It covers survey staking, grading, excavation, drainage, paving, water and sewer pipes from a contractor's perspective. I am going to buy the revised edition.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for anyone involved in excavation
Prior to becoming a civil engineer I operated heavy equipment. I am currently empolyed by a excavating contractor. I find the book very useful in answering questions that some experience equipment operators can't answer. The book does not teach one how to operate equipment. It describes methods of performing specific tasks(laying pipe, paving roads). It also tells how to deal with unsuitable soil, working with rock, working in mud, etc. I recommend this book to anyone involved in excavation work.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for
As a homeowner/handyman/farmer I was hoping to find a book on the proper way to grade, dig, and slope using my compact utility tractor with loader and box scraper. In this regard I was disappointed, but a book to find what I am looking for has been impossible to find. I do think the book would be an excellent source of information for someone who is thinking about getting into this area of the construction trade- sort of a primer for the first-time construction (road work) worker.

2-0 out of 5 stars not too useful
while this book had some interesting ideas for basic techniques, I really felt wanting from the descriptions of how to do the work. The author's descriptions were too general and stopped way short of something I could really put into action in the field. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Foremost authority in parking.
This book is, without a doubt, the most comprehensive and authoritative guide to all the important issues involved in parking today. There is no other publication for parking structures in the markert place today that comes in a close secom If you think the design of parking structures is simple and straightforward -- think again! Only those who have never designed a parking structure (or did a mediocre, botched job of one) would think that it's easy. Don't kid yourself. The issues are numerous and difficult in all areas: architectural, structural, maintenance, restoration and functional. The book delves in depth in many of these areas. The true value of the book lies in its ability to prepare you to ask intellegent questions. You will be in position to participate in the planning process of a new parking structure and you will understand criteria that go into design decision making. Reading this book will NOT make you an expert. Only years of practical experience will do that for you. Architects, engineers and various other kinds of consultants who "dabble" in parking structures are RANK AMATURES and should be avoided by anyone considering professional services for parking structures. ... Book Description

The new edition of Garber and Hoel's best-selling text focuses on giving students insight into all facets of traffic and highway engineering. Students generally come to this course with little knowledge or understanding of the importance of transportation, much less of the extensive career opportunities in the field.Transportation is an extremely broad field, and courses must either cover all transportation modes or focus on specifics. While many topics can be covered with a survey approach, this often lacks sufficient depth and students leave the course without a full understanding of any of the fields. Garber and Hoel's text focuses exclusively on traffic and highway engineering. They begin with a discussion of the pivotal role transportation plays in our society, including employment opportunities, historical impact, and the impact of transportation on our daily lives. This approach gives students a sense of what the field is about and an opportunity to consider some of its challenges. Later chapters focus on specific issues facing transportation engineers.Using a pedagogical tools such as worked problems, diagrams and tables, reference material, and realistic examples demonstrate how the material is applied. The new edition has been updated to reflect recent changes in guidelines set forth by HCM 2000 and AASHTO. Professional engineers have also found this material helpful, making it a great reference for practicing engineers in the field. ... Read more

Don't bother spending money on this reference. It will be of little value preparing for the PE exam. Too much information on airports that will nevber be on the PE exam.

1-0 out of 5 stars Not a good study aid
This book was of little value in preparing for the PE exam. It has very general information, lots of full page diagrams and charts and half of the book is appendixes. There are very few questions and the answers are not well explained. It is a narrative about the subject matter not a review of how to work engineering problems not to mention everything was in SI units only. I was very disappointed with this book and do not recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars helpful and simple
Straight forward and honest, helped me understand a lot of things I had not before - better than previous reviewer led me to believe!

2-0 out of 5 stars Poor Reference for the PE Civil Engineering Exam
It appears the people who put this book together have not looked at the NCEES website. Approximately 1/3 of this book is dedicated to airport and rail transportation. Subjects other than Transportation are not addressed. Most questions are not in the new test format and solutions are not fully explained. The few tips about the Depth Transportation Exam are buried in narrative and hard to find. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars terrific source book for urban designers
This is such an interesting book. Boulevards have been neglected for several generations because they somehow didn't fit into the vocabulary used by traffic engineers. But thanks to Allan and Elizabeth, we know that they are extremely efficient ways of carrying traffic and creating safe pewdestrian environments and that they creat beautiful cities. Look at Paris, Barcelona, Melbourne and even Chico!
Really nice drawings. The book is a delight top behold.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Companion to Great Streets
This book belongs in the library of people who enjoyed GREAT STREETS by Allan Jacobs, et al, or anyone who designs modern streets. The authors have researched boulevards extensively, including their safety and utility.

If you are interested in the topic, a video is available about the authors' research from the Institute of Urban and Regional Development of the University of California at Berkeley -- 510-642-5233. It believe it is called, "Boulevards: Great Streets for Great Cities."

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book - but some criticism
This is simply an interesting book. I love the descriptions and the drawings. I understand the author's enthusiasm for great streets and boulevards. Much of what makes these great is the atmosphere (shops, restaurants, pedestrians, bustling activity). I agree. However, this book as well as many other publications out there regarding streets, traffic calming, automobile dependance, etc all seem to forget that streets are primarily for cars. The author is worried about the survival of one of the Spanish boulevards due to its emphasis on carrying traffic.

Don't misunderstand me here. I'm all for traffic calming, neghborhood traffic management, cozy streets with many pedestrians, sidewalk cafes, and reducing the dependance on automobiles. As a traffic engineer, I need to consider what the streets are built for. The priority for some roadways is to move traffic, while others should accommodate vehicles, pedestrians, bicycles, and a great atmosphere while maintaining safety. I feel many books, such as this one, expose us to great examples and ideas, but unfairly use traffic engineers as scapegoats for urban sprawl and the destruction of our urban landscape. Believe it or not, but some traffic engineers consider qualitative design aspects besides quantitative design aspects.

I like the book, but I'm getting frustrated by architects, planners, and others criticizing transportation without much understanding or technical background. I'm sure most architects don't appreciate the laymen criticizing their works. ... Read more

Book Description

The first book ever written about Boston's Big Dig--the largest, most complex highway construction project ever embarked upon in U.S. history! This regional blockbuster reached #1 on the Boston Globe's bestseller list.Filled with dozens of remarkable photos and fascinating archival illustrations, it pulsates with details only an insider like Dan McNichol, former director of the project who was in at the conception, could provide. For example:

During peak construction years, the Big Dig spends nearly $110,000,000 a month.
The project will place 3.8 million cubic yards of concrete, enough to build a sidewalk three feet wide and four inches thick from Boston to San Francisco...three times.
Rats! Some city officials told the public that construction would dislodge millions of rats from deep down under the city.

When The Big Dig is finally finished, Boston will have over 200 acres of new parks, its skyline will be transformed, and its infamous traffic nightmares will be a thing of the past.

5-0 out of 5 stars KERASIOTES MUST GO
Dr. Bananamore endured a traffic nightmare when he last visited Boston. And Quincy Market doesn't even have any good oddball stores anymore. Where did the pig store go? It's all just a bunch of expensive fashion retailers. Not even a Cuthbert's, Inc. Scrod Bananamore left the city entirely due to its inhospitality. Be gone, Kerasiotes. Haven't you done enough already?

4-0 out of 5 stars A Nice Visualization
This is a nice piece of documentary photography to own. One can only wish that Andy Ryan had done the photos for its much weaker companion book, The Big Dig at Night. Buy this one for sure. If the other isn't on the remainder tables by now, it will be.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
I just finished reading this book and I was pretty impressed. I am a civil engineering student and of course am interested in projects like the Big Dig. This book is a pretty easy read: the text is big and the sentence structure is simple. However, it is a very informative book and explains the project in terms that anyone could understand. I think it would be hard to read this book without going to Boston and seeing the construction site as the pictures are somewhat hard to follow. Other than that, a good book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific book
I don't love the Big Dig (does anyone?) but I love this book. It actually explains the project that's been holding us hostage for so long. And you don't need an engineering degree to understand it. Now that the bridge is almost finished and we can see what the city's new skyline will be like, people are getting more excited about what's going on. This book, which shows what's been going on for the past 10plus years, shows how we've gotten to where we are. It's worth it just for the pictures. I'll never look at the Big Dig in the same way again.
