Book Description

This final entry in Arnie and Cathy Fenner's Frazetta trilogy features 150 full-color paintings by the renowned artist and illustrator, ranging in subject matter from barbarian battles to erotica to religious art. Frank Frazetta's 50-year career is celebrated not only in these museum-quality reproductions of his art but also in photos from his personal archives, including shots of George Lucas visiting the Frazetta estate and Bo Derek posing for one of his alluring femme fatales. Comments and anecdotes by the artist and the editors, along with testimonials from graphic-art luminaries Dave Stevens, Bruce Timm, and Bernie Wrightson, flesh out this portrait of the artist. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars under- appreciated master
Frank Frazetta is not only the master of Fantasy art but one of the true fathers of todays artist (Vallejo, Mcfarlane, Hildebrant) his body of work has ranged from the early comic strips of the 50's , to the great interpretation of Fantasy heroes greatest, Tarzan, Conan, Kane and many others, but he has also created some of the most memorable images of the 20th century Sci-Fi and Fantsy art(Deathdealer and so on). This bookk ends a wonderful trilogy that started with Icon, and was followed by Legacy, those previous volumes introduced many to the great worlds depicted in Frazetta's paintings, this book is a treasure chest of less known but just as great works. True longtime fans of this great master will relish this additions to the already establish body of work. I urge all fans of the master to also visit his museum in Stroudsburg PA to view the original paintins in all their greatness.

5-0 out of 5 stars 20th century genius
Only Norman Rockwell is in the same league with Frank Frazetta. He is the most talented fantasy illustrator of his generation, no one else comes close. His work easily qualitfies as Fine Art. His draftsmanship is so good it seems beyond human, like Michaelangelo. His sense of drama is so assured, each image is like something out of a classic movie or great legend. But everyone falls all over themselves praising Frazetta. This is the third book of his work, and is more for hardcore fans and collectors. Icon and Legacy contain his most famous works, but I love this one for the insights it gives into his techniques, and for the many sensitive and exquisite watercolor nudes he gave his wife on birthdays and anniversaries. I've seen the guy in person twice in my life, but I never said a word to him. Still, Frazetta has made me a better artist.

5-0 out of 5 stars Odds & Ends Collection, "Icon" & "Legacy" Better to Start
This is a beautiful book, but the more famous Frazetta works are to be found in the two previous books of this trilogy. So this book is great for serious Frazetta fans, but "Icon" and "Legacy" are better books for showing the most famous of his works.

This book, "Testament," is good for showing more of his unpublished stuff. It has many Playboy-type girlie paintings and drawings, some western themes, and his paintings for TV Guide, for the "Battlestar Galactica" show, (which look nothing like the actual TV program, but stand as terrific space fantasy works). The personal photos are also a very nice insight into his life.

All three books in this trilogy cover work from his whole life, and explain his career moves, with slight variations and different guest commentary. The printing is nicely done, so you can enjoy studying the paintings on glossy, quality paper. These three books are very nice additions to your personal bookshelf library.

If you're new to Frazetta's work, I would just suggest that you start in order, with "Icon," and then "Legacy," where the more popular works are printed, to be able to appreciate and understand Frazetta's work and influence in proper perspective. "Testament" is more for the confirmed Frazetta fans.

5-0 out of 5 stars I wish this was not the last volume
Cathy and Arnie Fenner have done a marvelous thing. They considered the longtime followers of Frank Frazetta's art and gave them a gift of rareties. This last volume has more of Frank's obscure work than either of the previous books in this series. Obscure does not mean "bad" or "unworthy". Obscure in this case means more creative range and less commercial recognition. Page 107 is a perfect example of what I mean. I can't even describe the plate other than to say it's a fantastic horror composition without a monster in sight. From western to horror, erotic to fantastic, this volume is the best of the three. The commentaries from the various artists is also a nice touch and shows the respect that Frank and his work has established. I'm particularly fond of the words written by Michael Kaluta. All the comments and essays complete the image of Frank, his career, his art, influence and friendship. My pet pieces are on pages 40 (Warrior of Llarn), 45, 73 (it boggles the mind that he repainted this and refers to the original, as it's presented, as a piece of crap!), 105, 107 and 114. Frank Frazetta has rendered images from a rich pallet of differing themes and subjects. For his critics who are fond of lambasting Frank as a painter of fat women and barbarians, this volume should put the final nail in their coffin full of misinfomation. The burial of such rampant subjectivity should give rise to his critics' giving in and taking pleasure from the vital work of this artist.
I wonder if a fourth volume is possible?
One last thing. The selection for the cover art was not a standout choice, but the selection for the art used on the endpapers was marvelous. ... Read more

Book Description

Feminism is one of the most important perspectives from which visual culture has been theorized and historicized over the past thirty years. The Feminism and Visual Culture Reader brings together a wide array of writings addressing art, film, architecture, popular culture, new media and other visual fields from a feminist perspective, combining classic texts by leading feminist thinkers with polemical new pieces. Challenging the notion of feminism as a unified discourse, The Reader explores how issues of race, class, nationality and sexuality enter into debates about feminism in the field of the visual and includes work by feminist critics, artists and activists. TheReader includes six previously unpublished texts written specifically for this volume.

Amelia Jones' introduction to The Reader traces historical and theoretical developments in feminism and visual culture. Articles are grouped into thematic sections, addressing Representation; Difference; Disciplines/Strategies; Mass Culture/Media Interventions; Body; and Technology. Each section opens with an introduction by the editor.

The Feminism and Visual Culture Reader provides a framework within which to understand the shifts in feminist thinking in visual studies as well as an overview of major feminist theories of the visual. ... Read more

In this illuminating book, a prominent art historian explores the links between avant-garde art and modern mass culture, showing that the connections between the two have always been strong, and even necessary to both. The author recounts vivid episodes involving Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, Christopher Williams, and many others, arriving at fresh and original insights into modern art and its place in late twentieth-century culture. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good guide through treacherous territory
I personally hate modernist art theory with a passion *BUT* since there is a need to navigate this terrain, Thomas Crow's book provides an excellent overview. He cuts through the BS and explains how we got to where we are in the art world - including why art criticism seems less and less interested in any actual art. Or being understood by the general public. Difficult reading nonetheless.

3-0 out of 5 stars Forbiddingly Difficult
This book consists of a collection of eleven essays on modern art in the common culture. Chapters touch on Warhol, the New York School, Hank Herron, Artforum, pastoralism in recent art, and comparable subjects.

On page 185, Crow refers to the increasing "tendency of critics to assert their prerogatives by cultivating a forbiddingly difficult language." Crow himself is a learned critic of modern art and its relations to the common culture. However, his book unfortunately is an exemplar of the depressingly difficult language he mentioned above. For example, on page 78 he writes of artists "asserting a condition of non-difference between high art and the general economy of sign production, art being increasingly distinguished as an extraordinary and privileged marker by the actual behavior of that economy."

If coping with this type of writing comes readily to you, there are several worthwhile insights that can be gleaned from the book. For this reader, however, the game was not worth the candle, and try as I might, after ten chapters, I could not bring myself to finish the eleventh and concluding chapter. Caveat emptor.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hope for art
Is contemporary art dead? Amidst the onslaught of all the -isms and in a life-world in which art and life seem so removed: is art dead today?

Crow doesn't think so and he offers a selection of observations of specific artistic practices that illuminate the vitality of art in our culture today: yes, it still speaks and it still responds. There is still hope.

There is a great reading of Warhol's "Disasters" in its social and historical context. You might just take another look at a Warhol after reading this piece. And against Peter Burger's declaration that the avant-garde is dead, Crow responds that engaged avant-garde practices still exist, if not flourish today: Bleuker and Matta Clark, to name a few. As an art historian of 18th century France, Crow proves to be a deft observer and critic of contemporary art practices.

Beautiful picture plates alongside brilliantly written essays. This is art criticism and art history at its best. What is criticism? The best, I think, are the ones that appreciate and demonstrate value without the pretenses and the cliches. This book is such an effort. ... Read more

Book Description

Von Dutch is one of the most interesting characters in hot rod and popular culture history. Considered the founder of "modern" pinstriping, he was a prominent character in many of the rodding magazines of the late '50s, and his fame endured long after he apparently tired of it.Besides being a striper, he was a gifted artist, machinist, and gun- and knife-smith.

Using stories and quotes culled from interviews, vintage photos, and images of the art and other works he left behind, this book chronicles Kenneth Howard's life from pinstriping beatnik to bus-dwelling hermit.Where it can, this book sets the record straight on Von Dutch the man, but in many cases conflicting stories will serve to illustrate the contrary, colorful, and sometimes difficult nature of Von Dutch the legend.

This book is a must-have for fans of hot rodding and hot rod culture! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice Little Book
I gave this one to a friend who never heard of Ruscha before. He loved it. It's a little unpretentious experience through Ruscha's world. It's not that kind of 7-colour-printed-on-coated-expensive-paper, but works very well as good entertainment and a valid introduction to west coast fine artists. Worth its price.

4-0 out of 5 stars A must for all Ruscha fans/influencees
Funny, but it seems as though every time a new Ed Ruscha book gets released, it then becomes the standard "must-have" edition. In my opinion, this is an excellent book for the price, even if only for a single viewing. What I mean is this: it's more like an object than a book, due to its small area (but thick volume), and lack of publisher information distraction - the absolute first page blatently plunges you into the art immediately. It will take the average art fan a good two hours alone viewing each plate at a contemplative pace. I have had two art shows myself, and Ed's work is by far my closest influence, so I am heavily biased. This book lacks the token interview with the artist, and also his other forms of work (notably the parking lot photography series, which is a sheer delight in its own right), but for the sake of the design, perhaps the book as it is says all it has to say (no pun intended, if you're familiar with his works). Part of the fun, though, with viewing these kinds of Ed's works, is reading his titles and materials used, as they are equally insightful; yes, I miss that. But the average or novice art buff wouldn't even notice it missing. All things considered, this is a great little form of entertainment all contemporary art lovers should own.

4-0 out of 5 stars very nice
My adventures with They Called Her Styrene began on a subway ride in Boston earlier this month. I saw an older woman flipping through a book, each page containting a picture with a few words written on it. I started looking with her as as she flipped through it. She flipped through it for about 20 minutes, and then my stop was next. I was worried I would never know the title of this book, and, being too shy to ask, would leave the train and be unsatisfied. Luckily, just as the train stopped, she closed the book and I saw the title.

I bought it shortly afterwards.

I already described it- it's a book of pictures with words across them. I enjoy it very much. As you sit and thumb through all of the pages, each word or group of words, combined with the colors on the background, conjur all sorts of thought and feelings inside you.

For me, it serves very well to just sit and thumb through it, looking at all the pictures and letting my mind wander as the book prescribes.

Its wonderful. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Best art history reference for most people..
This is a wonderful book and, in my humble opinion, a better book for most users than the big textbook edition "History of Art". The only complaint I have about this edition is its name; I feel it should be titled "History of Art: Concise Edition" as "History of Art for Young People" makes it sound too much like a children's book. While certainly suitable for an intelligent child, it is a superb art overview and reference for all people.

If you desire a general art reference you won't go wrong with this gem and you'll not find anything better. I have the 3rd edition also and it is excellent but this 6th one is greatly expanded (e.g., lots more photos and color) while retaining the user-friendly nature of the earlier editions. The text is clear and interesting, not written in the dry, boring style of a textbook. The printing and reproductions are top-quality. This art book is truly itself a masterpiece!

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything you need to know...
I needed to find a few good sources for an art history report and was lucky enough to pluck this book off the shelf at my local library. I ended up finding most everything I needed just in this book and was amazed at the detailed coverage of the history of each induvidual peice. I loved it so much that I bought it for myself, and it has probably been the best purchase I've ever made. The writing is excellent, the coloured pictures make it easy to distinguish certain important aspects of the art, and the background history on the artists, the impact of music, philosophies, or simply the work makes it the best all-around book on art history (especially for students) that I've ever read. It helps the reader to understand how the other influences of trade, literature etc. helped form periods in art history so that they may have a better understanding of the work in general. I would highly recommend this book to anyone in an art history class or any fellow art lover, it's wonderful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Art history for any age
As an art student in college, I slogged my way through several art history volumes, including Jansen's History of Art.Twenty years later, when attempting to revise an art enrichment program in my children's school, I was fortunate to come across Jansen's History of Art for Young People. Don't mistake the title as a reference to chronological age, but rather as aimed at anyone in an early (young) stage of fine art study. The book begins in prehistory and travels through to post-modernism, covering not only the art and artists, but the historical events that influenced the way the art developed. The text is very readable, with lots of key definitions, tables and line-illustrations right in the margins. There are four date based charts that organize the key achievements in Religion, Politics Science, Architecture and Art, emphasizing that art does not develop in a vacuum. Illustrations are well chosen with a fair number of color plates and sharp black and white pictures. Every page has some sort of visual aid, which makes it a pretty pleasant read for students. I highly recomend this book whether as a reference for learning about a particular artist or style, or as a foundation for designing an educational program. Jensen helps one turn the bits and pieces of art data that we all accumulate into a comprehensive sense of the breadth and influence of art in civilization. The depth of information is deep, but not so overwhelming as to drown the reader. If I were to make any criticism of this book, it would be only that it doesn't title itself as a history of WESTERN Art, which leaves an even larger portion of the world still unexplored.

5-0 out of 5 stars wow!

Book Description

In the 1960s and early 1970s, young people in New York City radically altered the tradition of writing their initials on neighborhood walls. Influenced by the widespread use of famous names on billboards, in neon, in magazines, newspapers, and typographies from advertising and comics, city youth created a new form of expression built around elaborately designed names and initials displayed on public walls, vehicles, and subways. Critics called it "graffiti," but to the practitioners it was "writing."Taking the Train traces the history of "writing" in New York City against the backdrop of the struggle that developed between the city and the writers. Austin tracks the ways in which "writing" - a small, seemingly insignificant act of youthful rebellion -assumed crisis-level importance inside the bureaucracy and the public relations of New York City mayoral administrations and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority for almost two decades. Taking the Train reveals why a global city short on funds made "wiping out graffiti" an expensive priority while other needs went unfunded. Although the city eventually took back the trains, Austin eloquently shows how and why the culture of "writing" survived to become an international art movement and a vital part of hip-hop culture. ... This is a wonderful book and I would recommend this to anyone interested in sci-fi/fantasy art. This book is even better than it's predessesors also. I think anyone who enjoyed the other spectrum books will enjoy this.

5-0 out of 5 stars Drop Dead Gorgeous!
Sci-Fi and Fantasy artists have always seemed like illustration's poor step-children, often ignored (and sometimes sneered at) while the historical and Western painters wore the mantel of respectability. Thank goodness Spectrum came along to point out to the naysayers that Art is Art and that the practitioners of "fantastic" art are as gifted as anyone working today (if not better).

Spectrum 10 is chocked-full of beautiful and imaginative work by veterans and fresh faces alike. Personal favorites include the previously unpublished gallery paintings by jillion-times-Hugo-winner Michael Whelan, the Expressionist-flavored space ships by John Berkey, the monsterously proportioned toy robots by Eric Joyner, and the fantasy scenarios of Paul Bonner. There's art for films, paintings for books, sculptures (which I personally enjoy seeing), and work from comics; serious, mature pieces followed by wonderfully whacky and whimisical images. There's really something for everyone. It's fun to go through the book and compare the judges' selection of award-winners in each category with what *I* think should have won.

And thank goodness someone has finally acknowledged Michael Kaluta (#10's Grand Master Award recipient) as one of the most worthwhile illustrators working today. Kudos to the Spectrum Board!

About the only downsides are the occasional typos and several pages with cramped lay-outs, but all-in-all a must-have book for anyone with an imagination--and at a bargain price at that!

4-0 out of 5 stars AN EMBARRASSMENT OF RICHES (That's a GOOD thing!).
I've been picking up the Spectrum collections since # 7 and I've notice an improvement both in quality and variety in the artwork presented.Within its 176 pages you'll find 300 plus reproductions. The book is divided into seven sections displaying work from advertising, book, comics, dimensional, editorial, institutional and unpublished sources.A cornucopia of styles and approaches grace SPECTRUM 10's pages. From the photo(sur)realism of Paul Bonner's watercolors portraying Orks and Minotaur to Kinuko Y. Craft's Pre-Raphaelite inspired BEAUTY AND THE BEAST to Brom's patented creepy/sexy gothic leather bound babes to Peter d Seve's delightful character studies in pencil for Disney Studios' Treasure Planet you'll find an eclectic cross section of SF/fantasy/horror illustrators working today. Jon joster (winner of the Gold Award in the comics' category) is my favorite here with his retro robots and expressive compositions.Only one thing irritates me in this book, and the only reason I gave 4 stars out of 5: these are the resin statuettes of comic book characters found in the "dimensional" section. These kitsch saturated figurines have no other purpose than to serve as "must haves" for pathological collectoholics and slightly mar this book for me. (Sorry about the soapbox spiel-guess I'm now assured of getting a good number of "I did not find this review helpful" votes.)Dispite this one caveat I highly recommend this beautiful book to anyone who appreciates fine illustration. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best Pinup artists on the scene today.
I've know Jon Hul for several years, and I have been awe-inspired by his work ever since. Jon's talent and artist vision stands head and shoulders above the rest, and I'm so glad that his art has been compiled in such a beautiful volume. Although nothing beats viewing his artwork in person, this book presents a wonderful overview of Jon's incredible talent and skill, and should be considered a "must-have" by anyone who appreciates artistic virtuosity. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty clip art, but no stencils
I got thrown off by the use of the word stencil in the book title. This isn't a book of stencils, it's a book of clip art. :(

2-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Personally I was not impressed with this book. I expected for 250 designs the author would have included a greater variety of indian, turkish, african, egyptian and other mehndi designs. The designs mainly resemble each other although there are a few pretty ones in between. Also for the novice the book does not offer any information on the history of a design pattern, or identifies them and gives no clue to the significance or meaning of any of the designs.
The author also does not offer any advice on how to go about attempting some of the patterns included.

5-0 out of 5 stars pretty designs
We bought this book for the sole purpose of finding inspriation for henna/mehndi designs. Some designs are great for mehndi. My husband made a really nice elephant on my leg.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas for Mehendi
I am fairly new to this stuff, I started doing henna tattoos on my feet and hands last summer. This is hard stuff! This book was full of great designs. It is not a book of stencils, please dont buy it if that is what you are looking for. If you are looking for ideas, and designs- this is a top knotch book for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
To say that you can spend hours browsing through this wonderful collection is an understatement. This is a book that can be savored over a lifetime.

It shows the progression of Rockwell's art from his early, almost Victorian style covers, to his most famous illustrations, to his political portraits. It always annoys me that people claim he is an illustrator, not an artist. Simply because these pictures tell a story should not detract from their artistic merit.

This volume has them all. From the beautiful, awkward, girl at the Mirror, Doctor's appointment and countless others that are not as well known, but still great! So many of these paintings allow us to learn more about America (Can you get much more American than Norman Rockwell?). His GI- Willie Gillis is truly everyman during WWII. We seem enjoying a hometown newspaper, on leave, with his comrades, and finally as a student on the GI Bill. So many ideas are timeless. The chronicle of a day in the life of a boy or girl seem to embody childhood. Commuters on a platform captures the rise of suburbia. THe one of a son sitting with his father and dog about to leave for college captures that bittersweet moment on the cusp of adolescence.

The sunlit, yet dusty, Marriage Liscense is generally recognized as art, but others should be too. I hope that with the recent Rockwell exhibets a new generation of Americans will appreciate this wodnerful artist who captured so much of our lives!

This is a great addition to any collection- you will never tire of looking through it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Collector's Item
If you can only have one Norman Rockwell book, look no further. This is the quintessential Norman Rockwell. You can spend hours and hours looking at the illustrations and still not fully grasp all the subtle nuances - like the cameo paintings within the painting; the relections in the mirror; the advertisements in the folded newspapers; and so on. I have only found one inconsistency. In "The Clock Mender" some areas in the painting make an abrupt departure from his trademark quasi-realistic style. It reminds me of Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon". Was Rockwell cleverly introducing "Surrealism" into this particular painting, in an inverted Salvador Dali sort of way? Or was the original painting simply damaged and then retouched by someone else? It would make delightful reading if Mr Finch, or anyone else, could offer an explanation.

Book Description

Guido is, quite simply the most influential hair-stylist in the world. As a young hairdresser at the heart of hip London, he transferred that energy and inspiration from London's youth-culture to the global mainstream by pioneering radically unstructured styles, seen on the likes of supermodel Kate Moss.Guido's innovations enabled women to think about their hair in a different way: to wear it in public as they would in private, to react against salon styles, to find their own personal looks based on inspiring cutting, coloring and -above all- new ideas. In this collection of 100 Guido classics, one stunning headshot follows another in images of the world's most beautiful models by renowned fashion photographers David Sims and Steven Klein. But this is not just a book for the fashion glitterati: here are not only styles, but also a way of thinking which is so universally powerful that it has influenced an entire generation. With an introductory essay by the out-spoken fashion commentator, Neville Wakefield, this is a hairdressing book like none that has gone before.

Images include styling for Gucci, Jil Sander, Yves Saint Laurent, Versace and Calvin Klein

Features supermodels Kate Moss, Emma Balfour and Stella Tennant

Guido has been creative director for several international hair salon groups ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars disappointing
If you are expecting beauty, hairstyling ideas, or a nice coffeetable book, you will be disappointed. The photos are not visually appealing and don't seem to have any artistic intent, though some do have the dark lurkings (without the genius of lighting) of the back-room B&W nude photos by Mapplethorpe. Aside from a young Kate Moss, these young faces exhibit marked sun damage and acne scars; perhaps these were "before" photos for a dermatologist's office. The hair cuts and styles are crude (perhaps intentionally), and with the amplified pits and valleys in the skin they leave the reader wondering what Guido's intention was in publishing this, as it hardly flatters his talent or esthetic sensibility. ...
