Exploring the street
This book/magazine/portfolio was one of my first introductions to William Klein and I'm thouroughly impressed. The book is in German, so it makes it difficult to read the captions and the text. It is basically a portfolio of Klein's work from 1954 until 1997 from all around the world. Klein's street photography style is unique and his photos are awesome, so it's almost not necessary to know what it's about.

Klein mixes up his work with a variety of portraits, candid moments of street photography and backstage at fashion and body builder shows. He get's right next to many of his subjects without any of them the wiser. In his portraits he captures an essence of these people's exciting lives and shows something that many portrait photographers are missing.

As the book progresses from 1954 until 1997 you have a great opportunity to see how Klein grew, changed and got even closer to his subjects without them noticing him.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves looking at street photography or enviromental portraiture. ... Read more

A great photographer
I was really impressed by this careful selection of photographs by one of the most inventive photographers of the twentieth century. These beautifully printed images lead us through the life of Erwin Blumenfeld, from Holland, to Paris, to the United States. The photographs lead us through Blumenfeld's endless creativity from striking political photos (of Hitler in 1933) topure beauty , and on to fashion in the fifties. Many of the interesting captions are taken from Blumenfeld's autobiography Eye to I which I had read with great interest a few years ago. The photographs (55) color and Black and white are placed in chronological order and some of them had not been published before.
The variety of techniques and darkroom magic displayed here is a stunning lesson in photography and this book can be as well considered as a first approach to Erwin Blumenfeld's work as a more in-depth perception, thanks also to the excellent introduction by Michel Métayer. ... Read more

real, really - true & good
If you are a lover of fully fashioned nylon stockings then you'll want to add this book to your collection. As you would expect from the title it contains sets of photographs of young ladies (the girls next door) in various states of undress, both indoors and out. Most are wearing stockings and suspenders, though a few hold-ups and tights (pantyhose) have crept in. The majority of the stockings featured are fully fashioned - the real things, with a "keyhole" at the top of a genuine seam! There are more than 440 photographs in total, in about 40 sets, and Uwe's passion for his subject matter shows through clearly. Not yet in the same league as Elmer Batters (see "Elmer Batters - from the tips of the toes to the top of the hose", and "Elmer Batters - legs that dance to Elmer's tune", both published by Taschen), Uwe Fülleborn has nevertheless produced some creditable pictures. My only criticisms are that the quality of a very small number of the photos leaves something to be desired, and that they are all in black and white. A number of Uwe's photographs in this book have already appeared in colour in the German leg art magazine "Laufmasche" (published by Verlag Ulrike Fülleborn), where they make a much bigger impact.

Erm...self explanatory really
This stocking fetishist turned photographer has crammed a huge amount of black and white pictures into this saucy little gallery of nylon. If you like fully fashioned stockings then you'll love this book. As the title suggests, the models are "girls next door" types so don't expect to see top notch glamour girls in professionally lit scenarios. Having said that, most of the models are still very pretty and certainly aren't lacking in sex appeal. The style of photography is very similar to that of Elmer Batters but with better looking models and not so much emphasis on the feet. Some of the pictures could have done with a bit more care being taken on focussing whilst others seem to have been let down by poor printing. Mostly the photos are of a pretty decent standard though. This is just one man photographing the thing he loves most; girls in stockings. I would have awarded 5 stars but the author has seen fit to include a few pictures of girls in tights.

I love this book
As someone who has a devout stocking - leg fetish, this book is on my list of top 5 leg books. I find the amateurish photography highly erotic. This book is like finding a box of nude - fetish photos that have been hidden in the attic for only the photographer to see. I would rather look at photographs of this sort than the over glamorized photographs in many of the photo books you will find on the market today. The models are beautiful and real, flaws and all. Walking down the street I can't help but wonder if some of he girls I pass may have been in this book. Enjoy, you will feel as though you found a hidden treasure.

Aweful aesthetics
Don't bother with this book. The quality of the images are very poor. They are aesthetically weak and technically bad. You are better off buying Elmer Batters, or one of the Legs books by either carlton or Donna Karan.

Worthwhile Book, But Don't Use It To Learn Photography
Although the title of this book suggests this would be a book to read to learn black and white model photography, it really is not. However, I still believe it is an excellent book to buy for a number of reasons, and well worth adding to your collection if your interest is in doing black and white photography of women, particularly nudes. First, the book has technical details of each image (film type, camera, lens, lighting, exposure, etc.) and that sort of information is very useful to a photographer who may be interested in, for example, how various brands of film compare. Secondly, there are some hints, which may prove useful. For the most part, these hints are excellent, but one has to be careful to evaulate each hint, as they are not all good in my opinion. Thirdly, the models are quite beautiful for the most part, making the book worthwhile for those who appriciate images of beautiful nude women.

Now, for the negative ... Although the women Bill Lemon has chosen as models are beautiful, the photography is a bit of a disappointment. In my opinion it is at the level of an advanced amateur. The author/photographer has found some image concepts that work, particularly the contrast of beautiful soft skin against rough wood, but that concept is repeated too much. The photos are not incredibly creative, and they tend to all look pretty similar. I do have to credit Bill Lemon for taking photos where the model looks beautiful, and I'm fairly sure the models who posed for him are quite happy with the photos he has taken. Most models, understandingly, care almost exclusively how they look in the photo, and are fairly indifferent to how creative or artistic the photo is.

I believe the positive aspects of this book far outweigh the negatives, and therefore reccomend it, provided the reader is aware of the above limitations and takes them into account.

A beautiful book filled with unforgettable images
In researching fashion photography for a modeling book, I came across Bill Lemon's work. From the breathtaking images to the informative way he goes into details regarding this style of photography - this book is a great resource. Not only for photographers interested in doing glamour photography, but for models who want to explore this artform as well.

Black and White model Photography-technique& Images
I found that the photographer lacked in creative ability and does not have a solid background in photography-(if any). The photos are average in every respect. I found that most of the photos were done in a copycat manner, and the photographer does not have his own personal style. Therefore, nothing is fresh or unique about the work in this book. It is strictly for an amateur level person who is just strating out.

this book was ok, the women where amazing and each photo had a lot of information on the camera used and how it was takin. a book that is worth buying if your are seriously interested in commercial or model photography.

Stunning photographic works by a talented artist
After purchasing several other books in the field of glamour and nude photography, I came across this book, Black and White Model Photography. Although I do not usually shoot in Black and White, the techniques are presented in such a way that easy to understand. The author covers a wide range of situations that allowed me to learn more about my photography. When I was stuck on a particular topic, I telephoned the author who was very helpful in describing what needed to be done. a good book
It is a good book, but not great as his another one: Rock and Royalty, Versace/Avedon. If you are a fan of Versace, then it's worth to buy one.

A big MAGNIFICENT book full of real hunks and stallions!
If you're a female (or well, at least a gay), better brace yourself and get ready for a glossy, eye-filling page after page of the finest young men ever born and bred in the whole world! Those sexy studs are very artfullydepicted here in a stylish vein by a very creative fashion designer likeGianni Versace and most of them are quite scantily-clad and some of themeven completely naked. A very bold and unconventional piece of art that youcan find on any coffee table! Too bad this handsome album is just plain tooexpensive for me to merely pluck right off a bookstore shelf!

Not Just The Men--The Photographic Inter-Melding
Okay, the males are stylish and handsome both--possessed of muscles, adorned with Versace's jubilant, expressionistic attire. But there's more expressionism in the photos themselves. I know of no other book wherevisual images (here, photos) are not just presented 1-2-3 in staticprocession, but where portions are repeated--echoed later on--blended withfollowing photos--in a creative interweaving which can only be"art" in the definition of "dynamic combination of symmetryor order, and asymmetry or tension." A beach scene appears, then isblended with another scene later. And interblended with the written text,too. Rare is this twin-starring of word and image, plus thispermutation-and-combination of images. Only in comics do word and image sovitally interact. So check out this book for its design-artistry, as wellas its aesthetic dudes.....

What caught my attention............
was supermodel Marcus Schenkenberg on the cover. That's why I brought it home! But when I opened it up, I was thrilled to see that every photo was marvelous and artful. Kudos and love to the late Versace, who created thisbrilliant piece of art.

Beautiful stuff!
The photographs are really captivating! They are all from Brit pop magazines like The Face and BIG... It's really worth to get this book and make it part of your artistic senses collection. I liked this book
I guess because it is the first photography book that I liked the pictures and was able to reproduce the look without to much equipment. I think the key is the c-41 b/w film.

SELF INDULGENT AND AMATUERISH AT BEST
I've read hundreds of photography books written by legends and little-knowns. This is one the worst. The photography is inconsistent from occasionally very good to absolutely amatuerish snapshots and the insights into technique ramble through a rehash of often poorly described and thought out notions not based in fact from one example to the next to the next to the next, on and on and on. For instance, Ms. Brystan's obsession with supposedly "overexposing" film to acheive clean, flawless skin tones is meaningless since the photos are, in most cases, printed with the skin tones as normal (one stop lighter than middle tone for the exclusively caucasion subjects) and with "flaws" (freckles, blemishes, etc.) quite apparent. I suspect she doesn't realize her camera's meter is not calibrated correctly and has taken to "overexposing" to correct what is really an equipment issue though she's convinced she's discovered an innovative approach to her subjects. From the opening pages she revels in not being a trained photographer, but, trust me, a semester in a basic photography class at any local technical college would do her a world of good, if she can admit to herself that her ignorance is not a blessing to her craft or her readers.

Excellent Book for Inspiration & Ideas
I found Lori Brystan's book very useful. Not a lot of technical data within, but that's not the purpose of the book. There's plenty of those out there. There are lot's of shots within with good descriptions on set up for each picture. I appreciated the her description with the lighting. How it was positioned and where it came from. Mainly a good book to study the pictures and get some inspiration on shooting portraits that don't look like ordinary portraits.

More of the same
This is an attractive book with attractive shots - in a ho-hum kind of way. I saw nothing "High Imapct" in the images, however. The author simply relates how certain shots were made in the all-to-familiar style of this genre. Would much rather see someone get into the philosophy of lighting in an interesting discussion style book (Not the old mannequin heads of the past). I wish writers would actually let us get inside their thought processes - maybe shooting images for a book rather than compiling images already done into a book. ... Read more

Amazing
I love the work in this book and have been seeking out several of the photographers. Mikael Jansson, Larry Sultan, Terry Richardson, Alexei Hay, Antonio Spinoza... the work is amazing. This book is a great collection.

I attended the show this book is based on at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston and was extremely disappointed. The photographs selected for the show were without merit and neither my friend nor I were able ascertain what the show purported to illustrate, which is the relationship between commercial fashion work and personal artistic expression. Not about real blondes
This book is not about blondes; it is about brunettes who bleach their hair. Real blondes - those who got their hair colour from their genes and not out of a bottle - will be disappointed, as there's nothing in this book that relates to them. There is a lot of interesting information about the bottle blondes like Jean Harlow, Marilyn Monroe and Madonna but real blondes are quite something different.

breathtalking
on all levels this is an amazing photgraphy book. it is well produced, the prints are great quality and the works chosen truly showcase Comte's brilliance. Get this book, and not its cheaper, shoddy companion mentioned by the first reviewer

Contrasts/Kontrasts is just as good,and CHEAPER
I was quite desperate for this book to come out,I first heard about it like 3 YEARS ago and have been waiting for it impatiently ever since.Since I love Michel Comte's work,I bought Contrasts/Kontrasts Portfolio from Stern Portfolio Library.It was nothing short of breathtaking,it had something for everyone,every taste.And I THOUGHT Faces would be the same,only it would be an entire BOOK'S worth.Also,since Michel Comte was the one who actually discovered her,I was certain alot of his work with model Jenny Shimizu would be included(I'm a tad obsessed with her:o).NOPE,not ONE picture.Many of the same pictures are in both books,in fact Contrasts/Kontrasts actually has alot more of his fashion photography than Faces does.Don't get me wrong,it's a beautiful book,all I'm saying is Contrasts/Kontrasts is really just as good,VERY similiar,and a heck of alot cheaper. ... BIBLIOPHILE
OK, so you think it wasn't great, it was uninteresting, blah blah blah...please do a little research as to the effect this document has had on the advertising realm...Just proves how quickly ideas get ripped off...but this was the original and I predict it becoming a classic.

Poor Photography
If the title of the book is begging for an answer, the most obvious objection would be that the photographs are at best mediocre, but typically poor.The photos are poorly composed, poorly exposed, and poorly lit.Aless obvious objection is to the attempt to pass off poor photography asart.

Excellent photograpy - Content: sexual and droll
Testino's photographs combine sexuality and whimsy in blatant and subtle ways.The more you look at the photographs and their titles, the more you are aware of his slyness and ambisexuality.As he roams the world, hefinds amusement in this sexuality, and captures it with a wily smile.

Very informative, beautifully illustrated
I think some of the other reviewers missed the point of this book. It's not a "what to wear" guide; it's not an in-depth historical treatise, and it's not soft-core porn. Actually, this book is a really good overview of lingerie and how it's tied in with social trends and ideals of women's bodies over the years. If the photos are titillating, it's because lingerie itself has an erotic side to it, and it's often photographed in a way that enhances that aspect, which is appealing both to men (who see it) and women (who wear it). The photos are beautiful and sexy and add to the appeal of the book - and I'm a heterosexual female. But the text is what's really interesting. I found myself unable to put it down, and it's caused me to think about undergarments in a whole new way.

Somewhat interesting
Like most women, I enjoy dressing seductively and sexy for my partner. From garter belts, to satin gowns, to thongs and one piece little see throughs, they're all beautiful.The book has nice illustrations and talks about lingerie from the early days to now, but the book does not cover all the basics.The book, in my opinion is worth reading if you want to know the basics on lingerie, nothing else.As a part-time model, I have found that lingerie does not fit all women, even if they have flawless bodies. This book does nothing to suggest what would look better on tall women, skinny women or women with large/small breasts. I did like the book, but I felt like it was very basic and missing alot of useful information.

Intelligent prose on history undergarments...
I'm not sure what others consider titillating material, but this book certainly is not out for the quick, cheap thrill (and that's a good thing).The text describes the changing fashions over the years, and theimprovements in materials which allowed those changes in many cases.Thepictures range from gritty, authentic b/w "early pioneer style"to 1960's variety to the obligatory Victoria's Secret model shots.Thereis no shame in appreciating the few photographs which one might considerslightly arousing, and the text is an interesting read.My girlfriendvery much enjoyed receiving this book as a surprise gift, which we thenread together.

not as I expected.
By looking at the book cover, I thought that it would have lots of nude pictures, etc. And from the book title, I assumed this is a picture book about those models having fun after dark. But in reality, it is just a book of different male models in different poses. It only has a few nude pictures. Nothing too exciting, I think.

NOTES FOR THE COLLECTOR OF MALE EROTICA
You can't have wine and caviar everyday, and if collecting male erotica could be compared to gastronomy this photographic book would be the equivalent of a box of candy: fun and sweet but hardly wholesome. Book gets 4 stars because it will balance out your collection of more serious and traditional male photobooks and no question that these guys are goodlooking and sexy, but there's alot of overstated machismo too that gets old after a while. Probably the best idea of what you can expect from this book could be found in Brad Gooch's forward to the book. He states that one of Lalli's, (the photographer), cues to the models as he shot them was, "look at me like your gonna kill me." Munch on that one for a bit...

Exellent sexy Manfun
This book is stylishly presented with amazing graphics and beautiful photos. The guiltily sexy pictures of hot Rex models add a sense of uniqueness. I find the use of blood and dirty models to be not offensive, but entirely appealing.
