Nostalgic and somewhat delightful
This is an archive of the advertisments and editorials for Versace. His pictures, like his clothes are refreshing, and surprising. Those who buy this book will encounter some director's cut images. However, "The Naked" lacks the better Versace campigns. Those familiar with Versace photographs will wonder why they did not include the better shots... Some pictures are amazing, yet, some didn't have the luster. And unfortunately, the bad outnumber the good. With the price, it is still a good buy but leaves you craving more. ... Read more

A mix of old and new
I had been on the waiting list for this new book for several months and finally it arrived today. The key here is that it is the "revised" edition of the one printed in 1994, with about half of the images and text coming from the original book (I have them here opened side-by-side for comparison). I was disappointed in how the publisher simply scanned the old pages of photos and reprinted them with much less quality than the original printing. So going through the book, though the pictures are quite professional and the models are gorgeous, the obvious lack of print quality (quite poor actually) for half of the book is a big detractant for the viewer. The remaining new material is printed well with some stunning examples of glamour photography at its best. David and Duncan - why did you allow Amphoto to ruin your excellent past work with such sloppy printing??!! If one can get past that (and it's difficult), the context of the book is top notch with great advise and new sections on shooting digital. I had to give this book only three stars since the photographic reproduction of the original book's photos were so poor. ... Read more

"Laetitia" is like a great beauty with spinach on her teeth.
Laetitia Casta is, of course, a spectacularly beautiful and shapely model, and the photographers represented in the eponymous book are among the best and most fashionable in the world. Alas, the photos are vandalized by the worst reproduction and printing quality in a photo book in recent years. Previews of the book in "Photo" and other magazines carry greatly superior reproductions of the images which here are out of focus and muddy. "Forms", by Patrick Demarchelier, carries several of the same images and a comparison of the two books is utterly humiliating for the dreadful Laetitia. As for the color images -- well, only the mini poster glued to the back cover offers anything worth viewing. Don't buy the book without seeing it first, so you can be sure of what you are -- and are not -- getting.

Must have for people who appreciate beauty

The SuicideGirls book is indicative of a new style of erotic photography emerging in society, changing the face of art, pin-up modeling, and modern-day softcore porn moguls such as Playboy.

Filled with pages of glamorous nude and semi-nude portraits, the models depicted are sensual, playful women, empowered by their sexuality. Atypical of most erotic photography, the SuicideGirls models are pierced, tattooed, dyed, taped, shaved, chained and otherwise exemplify an aesthetic born out of the alternative underground scene.

The book is prefaced with an introduction by Missy Suicide, the photographer for the book, and details the inspiration that made the book, the photographs, and the related website spring to life. The first 100 pages document Missy's photographic efforts, showcasing some of her more captivating shots from her work over the years. The last 50 pages feature stats written by the girls themselves, accompanied by self-portraits and journal entries showing off the diverse personalities and nationalities inherent in the book.

As an artist, I find the beauty of the SuicideGirls breathtaking, and find it difficult not to whip out a sketchpad every time I see the photographs. Even better in print!
I've been looking forward to the SuicideGirls book for months now. When I finally got my copy I was pleasantly surprised at how good the pictures look in print. The quality is first-rate, with beautiful colors, nice shiny glossy pages, and a sturdy binding that seems worth much more than the super-cheap price. The book is divided into two sections: the first is pictures that Missy Suicide shot of the SuicideGirls and the second is self-portraits and profiles done by the girls themselves. If you like the SuicideGirls website, or even if you know nothing about the site but like beautiful pin-up photography of unique women, this book is for you!

If i only had a coffee table....
This is the book version of the suicidegirl.com website. The glossy pages are covered with your nongarden variety pin ups that will no doubt rock your world. I love it. Finally someone is publishing beautiful pictures of girls with brains in there heads instead on saline in their boobs. COULD SOMEONE HELP ME
I just recently discovered Suicide Girls online, and must say I'm very impressed. Suicide Girls is so much better than Playboy, for it displays MY type of girl: tattooed and pierced. But enough of that, I've noticed that some of the most attractive ladies are no longer with the site, and since the site doesn't offer archives, it's hard to come across older photos. I've noticed "Mary" on the cover, thus it's safe to assume she's inside the book, but I'm really interested if any spreads of "Nala" are inside, particularly photosets of her in the purple wig. That girl's a knockout. I'd appreciate the help, it really help to pursuade me to purchase the book. Thanks.

An excellent example of the power of cosmetics.....
Francois Nars' first collection of portraits is a fascinating "read"(there's only a few pages of text). The images, the fantasy, the creative process are what is important.

Nars photographs his subjects simply, against a white background in most cases, although some have more extensive set work. The emphasis is on the face and of course, the makeup. The makeup is, in a word, stunning. Nars mixes wild and fanciful theatrical makeup with more subdued, practical makeup. Understandably, the wild makeup makes a deeper impression, but the range of the makeup highlights Nars' skill. My particular favorites are Shalom Harlow as Snow White(though I've seen a less graphic version of the portrait where's she's simply showing her garter, not her panties), Susan Sarandon looking stunning in wearable, pretty makeup, and the picture of a performance artist in full-body makeup with wild wig and face. There is full frontal nudity in this book, but it is not portrayed in a sexual way. In fact, if anything, many of the subjects who are fully clothed are more sexual than the nude ones.

It's hard to judge Nars' caliber as a photographer. Are the photos stunning, or is it simply what the pictures are of that makes them so intriguing? It's a fine line, but the pictures are playful, attractive, and well thought out. The subjects are famous people, many presented in a new and different way then we've seen them before. I definitely would advise people to check it out.

A portrait photo book of models & adult images
This is a large 11 x 15 book of portraits of 241 subjects. The book is attractively printed in Italy. There basically is little writing: a one page introduction by Andre Leon Talley and a one page end by Nars. It is in summary not a thing of beauty but a freak show. The makeup looks like circus grease paint. Nars writes: "Though I worked for years with some of photography's greatest artists, I never planned to be a photographer. It happened naturally when I started my makeup line in 1994 and needed to create an image for the product. Having no budget for a star photographer, I decided to do it myself." Big mistake. Nars should have remained a makeup artist. His idea of portraiture is white backgrounds and light tent even lighting which really is product photography lighting. Models like Karen Elson who appears in the Nars catalogue are shown in unattractive poses sucking on a cigarette and looking plain. Joceyln Wildenstein is a subject next to a model dressed up as little red ridding hood. There is a particular attraction to head on full frontal male nudity. Grace Jones is shown grabbing her crotch. Smokey eye makeup is highlighted on the boys. And a young teen "school girl" is shown suggestively in lingerie. It is hard for me to believe that the majority of purchasers of Nars' makeup would want to look like the images in this book and I find the release of this book ironic at the same time Nars has a national magazine highlighting his digital makeovers. This is definitely an "adult" book with images some may find offensive.

X - Ray
This book is amazing. The subjects used are surreal. The effect Nars gives is futuristic and sexy. His portraits are spectacular. At first glance, the collection may seem overwhelming, but concentrating on each picture made the book very enjoyable to look at. I recommend this to any collection of photography books.

Great Makeup, ok pictures
The makeup in this book is great, the book is also great, the only thing I dont like is as a photography who does beauty photography I see no change in camera angle. All pictures are shot from one position. But all and all it is an amazing book.

Elegant, Stylized Classical Portraiture
Horst P. Horst was at the top of his game as a photographer for a career that spanned 60 years. The key to his appeal lies in a sound foundation in portraiture composition of the sort that the great painting masters used. To this, he added echoes of form, sensuous light and shadow, and a frequent ability to catch people at their best. While I find his faces often over or under lit for my taste, this book contains dozens of virtually flawless images that you will cherish. One of the nice elements of the book is that Mr. Horst was adept at color photography, as well as black-and-white. The book contains 130 duotone images and 20 in full color. His subjects are usually actors, models, fashion designers, and artists. The three Vogues (American, British, and French) were his most frequent employers. The volume is greatly improved by an introduction that explains how his career developed and his relationship with other photographers and magazine editors. I thought the detailed captions for the photographs were very interesting and impressive, giving the volume a depth that most fine photography books lack. The quality of the book, paper, reproduction, and design are all superb. This show will open in Boston in mid-October, and I plan to see it then!

Fantastic Book !
If you want to know how to make shoes or just want to know how shoes are made this is the best book that you can buy. Every page has beautiful closeup color photographs. Just by looking at the photographs alone shows you how it is done and there are many, many, photographs showing you every stage in the process of hand making a pair of men's shoes.

Finally, a decent book on shoemaking
Information on shoemaking is getting difficult to find. I bought this book hoping I could learn how nice shoes are made. I was very pleased with what I learned from this book. One step further into the details, however, would have made this book the last word on the subject.

If you have a little imagination, however, it is not too hard to fill in the details. Actually, since the author is a very respected Hungarian shoemaker, I can imagine it being a difficult decision on where to draw the line between "details" and "wordiness." Do you have to talk about glue viscosity (he does) or glue recipes (he doesn't, "shop secrets"). Plenty of information is included and hundreds of excellent photos make it easy to imagine yourself right alongside a master craftsman.

* taking measurements
* anatomy
* shoe sizes
* history and making of lasts
* characteristics of different styles of men's dress shoes
* design of the pattern (the gist of it, anyway)
* leather tanning processes
* characteristics of different leathers
* clicking, brogueing, stitching and reinforcing of uppers
* lasting the shoe (stretching the upper around the last)
* lots of detail on tacking and stitching during the lasting process
* welting
* soling (including the shank and cork filler)
* building the heel
* ornamentation and finishing
* proper shoe care
* short bios on the greatest workshops in Europe and America

Needless to say, I learned alot. I had no idea top-end shoes use wooden pegs to hold the heels on or that broken glass and bones are common tools in the trade. This is a very nice addition to my library.

superb features on the world's most famous workshops
This book is about bespoke handmade shoes for men - but not about any of the major ready-made brands. The book presents a great introduction to the more than 200 steps from measuring your feet to the finished shoe. Chapters include taking size, making lasts, the different shoe styles, the different parts of the shoes and how to care for your custom-made shoes. The book also includes superb features on the world's most famous workshops including Lobb, Berluti and Vogel. The author Laszlo Vass is the owner of the well-known Vass shoe workshop in the center of Budapest, Hungary. If you are a shoe connaisseur or affictionado and also think that "elegance begins with shoes" then this book is the right choice for you.

Pretty good book
A 20th century "how to" in the manner of old-time works by Rees, Leno, Devlin , and so forth. This work examines first the history and basic technology of handmade shoemaking, with gorgeous photographs, and fairly clear text (particularly considering that it's a translation). It then takes a quick trot through the crème of the big-name shoemaking firms still in operation today, and concludes with a heartfelt tribute to shoemaking as an art form. As an overview of the trade, this work is more than adequate, although for someone not engrossed in the topic, the jumping back and forth between topics can be a little distracting. The author's knowledge of shoemaking history is fairly standard, with many of the traditional old shoemaking chestnuts reappearing here. The author's discussion of techniques is a trifle problematical, in that he does not indicate the universality of the techniques and tools (for example, not all handmade shoemakers use needles or wax made by the recipe shown) - but this is a common failing in shoemaking texts,and certainly nothing to count against the text. Having gotten down this far, you are likely wondering why I gave the book this high a marking if I was this critical of it - it's the pictures. I love this book!
I don't know why it was given one star by the other reviewer. It has many up-to-date, step-by-step instructions on how to do over 100 different, modern styles. Unlike other book that have ugly styles, these are hip for clubbing, work, different locations, weddings, fun, and vintage. I'm excited to try the different styles out. Every style I've tried so far has worked and looked like I spent a lot of time! Not all styles are time-consuming, like the other review said. It is faster to blow-dry your hair w/ a product than airdry it anyway. The negative reviewer was confused or needs to buy a good hairdryer. The products make the hair. By the way, a really good book on haircare products w/o breaking your wallet is "Don't go shopping for haircare products w/o me". These styles seem to be targeted to Jr High, college, and older women as well. It's not for little girl styles. I'm excited to try the dreadlocks!

Um....
This book wasn't the best one I've read about hairstyling. The book does give a few good hair-care tips, but many of the styles in here are a little difficult to do and I don't think anyone who isn't good at hairstyling would be able to do them without help. Most of the styles in this book are for special occassions like weddings, dates, and vacations. "The Complete Book of Hairstyling" would be a good book if you want to find a style for one of the occasions above, but other then that, it would be wise to skip this book.

I found this book informative and interesting, but it wasn't quite what I was looking for. If you looking for a step by step book, Hair: A Book of Braiding and Styles/Book and 3 Scrunchies
by Anne Akers Johnson looks like it would be more help.

Buy this book to be told what you are doing wrong
The tips in this book are not for real people, they are written for people who have too much time and money to spend on their hair. I do not know anyone who actually has the time to wash, condition and blow dry their hair in the manner detailed in this book, let alone style it. The author makes it sound like you MUST blow dry your hair and coat it with expensive styling products in order for it to be healthy; there is something wrong with that thinking. Disappointing
Peter Lindbergh's earlier books are far superior to this. Maybe I am missing something here but this book isn't really "Stories" at all. I thought the stories would be mysterious, enchanting, romantic, sensual or at least interesting photographs. Nothing here is. Everything is overly contrived including a ridiculous invasion by midgets in flying saucers. Really!? ...

True there are a few, very few in my opinion, gorgeous pictures of beautiful models. Most of the models have disgusting cigarettes hanging from their lips or dangling from their fingers -- not very sexy. In fact this book seems more a tribute to the Marlboro man than to the beauty of his models.

Wim Wenders wrote the introduction and I admire and respect his work very much. He apparently sees things in this book that I am clearly missing. I have paged through this book three times now to see if I could "get it". I don't. Wenders introduction drones on with the continuing question "How does Peter Lindbergh do it?" I don't know what Lindbergh has done except contrive and exaggerate to absurdity. I am disappointed.

The fashion industry is largely based on hype. Evidently, those working in that industry begin to believe all this hype themselves. Perhaps that is what has happened to Lindbergh, he believes everything he puts out is a masterpiece -- it isn't.

Not what I expected
I was a bit disappointed by this book. I am a huge fan of Lindbergh and have followed his work for years in various magazines. I have all books; I can say that I am VERY familiar with his work. I thought this book was going to be a more of "behind the scenes". It's not. It does have out takes, Polaroid's, and a collage of written letters that are mostly eligible. I had hope there word be some views by Lindbergh on his "little films". There were none. There is a long-winded intro by Wim Wenders. I'm not sure why they picked him. I guess simply cause they're German. The work that is shown in this book really isn't his strongest. Images of Women, another Lindbergh book, can clearly demonstrate this. For all the people interested in Models, Milla Jovovich is the star of the book. There must be at least 50 pages of her. All in all this book really is beautiful but in comparison to Images of Women, it simple lacks. ... Read more

A GLORIOUS look at the fashion life of a legend...
JACKIE THE CLOTHES OF CAMELOT is a work of perfection from the very first page (when you open the book there are some gorgeous "extra" photos of Jackie to the very last page where there's a very touching picture of Jackie taken a few days before her death...looking peaceful, serene and beautiful.

I've read all three of the books that have recently come out on this subject and, while they all are good, this one is the BEST BY FAR. Jacqueline Kennedy the White House Years, the official catalogue, is just that, a catalogue, and not a book and it doesn't include MOST of the clothes that Jackie wore during her time in the White House. What's even more confusing is that the book doesn't include all of the interesting documentation about her work in the White House that is included in the exhibit at the Met. Why is that I wonder? And Jackie Style is a stylish book, but a little to flip for my taste and it barely skims the surface of Jackie's extraordinary life and has a sparse set of photographs, although some of them are rarely seen, it's because they frankly aren't that good...

But this book is wonderful...dozens and dozens of wonderful photographs, with vivid color and including her entire White House years, a look at her early years and the fashion influences that helped shape her style. It also includes a section on her post-Camelot years where we can see Jackie age so gracefully...

Then there are the stories of her life, and her remarkable contributions to American culture and history. These stories are so interesting, written with wit, insight and a lot of inside information.

This book is a WINNER!

A LAVISH TRIBUTE, AS ELEGANT AS THE LADY HERSELF
Jay Mulvaney has worked magic in his tribute to Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. This book, with a huge number of never before seen photos, is like an illustrated history of the Camelot era...and the book brings the romance, hope and promise of those times back to life, in black and white and vivid color.

More than the pictures though, are the words...choice little stories that recount the history behind Jackie's wonderful work in the White House...each "photo caption" (it seems unfair to call them that, they're so much more) is a little vignette that illustrates in words what the photographs show us.

Excellent record of 60's style as seen thru the eyes of JO
I am not a die-hard Jackie O fan, but I love fashion in general. I have always thought of Jackie O as a fashion icon, and wanted to learn more about her. Until now, I have never seen a book that pictorally does her sense of style justice. However, in this book there are enough photographs both in black and white and in color to satisfy any fashion junkie or Jackie O fan. No matter what the situation, Jackie O was always appropriately and fashionably attired. This book does an excellent job of showing this by portraying her clothing choices through the years and in a variety of categories. This book does not go into great detail about Jackie O as a person or historical figure, I don't think it was written with those objectives in mind, but it should satisfy the fashion cravings of most people. I highly recommend it.

Chic at its best!
Who else, in all the other First Ladies, could have worn all those beautiful clothes with the chic and style Jackie had! Not many I guess. In this beautiful book, there are some never seen before pictures, that demonstrates what elegance in fashion is all about. It will take a long time before we can see that again in the White House. I treasure that book that makes me relive that unique period of refinement and class that once was in the White House, thanks to Jackie!

Not worthy
I reckon this book doesn't worthy the money if you already have "A Thousand Days of Magic: Dressing Jackie Kennedy for the White House" by Oleg Cassini, or if you don't have "A Thousand Days of Magic", I strongly recommend it instead of this one. 90% of the pictures and sketches of Jackie's clothes are also included in "A thousand Days of Magic", which provides a much larger collection of her wardrobes/pictures and more detailed illustration of the design and her style. The outline and paper quality of "A Thousand Days of Magic" are also much better than this one, which is poorly presented by surrounding the pictures with lots of words.
