Book Description

Presented in an identical format to Phaidon’s previous Fruits, published in 2001, Fruits Too is a collection of Tokyo teenage street fashion portraits selected from Japan’s premier street fanzine of the same title. Published every month by Shoichi Aoki, who is also the sole photographer for the magazine, Fruits was established in 1994 as a project to document the growing explosion in street fashion within the suburbs of Tokyo. Over the last decade the magazine has grown to cult status and is now avidly followed by thousands of Japanese teenagers who also use the magazine as an opportunity to check out the latest styles and trends. The average age of those kids featured in the magazine is between 12 and 18 years old. Most of the clothes that they wear are a combination of high fashion – Vivienne Westwood is a keen favourite – and homemade ensembles which when combined together create a novel if not hysterical combination. This latest publication of the best of Fruits will follow the original Phaidon publication by including translations of the various Japanese captions that were originally attached to the photographs that list the name, age and clothing of each person photographed. ... Book Description

With over 200 Vogue and Glamour covers to his credit and 30,000 photos in archive, John Rawlings (1921-1970) immortalized the era in which American fashion and style truly came into their own. During his three-decade affiliation with Conde Nast, Rawlings’s work paralleled his publishers’ and editors’ efforts to reformat and expand the power and scope of the fashion press. Rawlings was in the elite circle of Irving Penn, Horst P. Horst, George Hoyningen-Huene, and George Platt Lynes, all top Vogue photographers, yet never received the kind of attention lauded on his colleagues — until now. Drawing on the photographer’s recently rediscovered archive, curator Kohle Yohannan presents glamour portraits as well as never-before-published nudes that testify to the artist’s ground-breaking and compelling body of work. Photographs of stage, screen, and society stars of the 1940s and 1950s, including Marlene Dietrich, Salvador Dali, Veronica Lake, Lena Horne, and Montgomery Clift are featured. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great collection from a master fashion photographer!
This collection brings together the best images of this photographer. His work stands out from his contemporaries with thier unique, groundbreaking style. You can tell he inspired people like Avedon. His work is timeless, not date at all. If you like fashion photography from the mid-twentieth century, you'll love this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Out of Darkness and Shadows into the Light!
Before commenting on this book, you should be aware that it contains many nude images that would be "R" rated if they were contained in a motion picture.

John Rawlings took fashion photography in a whole new direction. In the 1930s when he began, the predominate style used lots of shadow and darkness to present a sense of haunting mystery. That style was also great for covering up flaws in the subject. Around 1940, John Rawlings began creating fascinating modern fashion shots that look like they might have been made just yesterday. In these images, he makes light, reflections, and color even more interesting than the darkness and shadow ever were in black-and-white. In doing so, he is remarkably effective in "keeping the photographer out of the picture."

His career was a most distinguished and prolific one. Mr. Rawlings was responsible for over 200 covers of Vogue and Glamour. These images captured a unique "chic sophistication" that you will recognize and appreciate seeing again. He also produced a series of famous Clairol ads, and published two books of nudes (some of which are reproduced here). He is one of the rare photographers from that period who was top-notch in both black-and-white and color.

Some of his best work involved making cigarette smoking by women seem more glamorous. It was hard for me not to wince which I saw those photographs.

The book opens with a poem that reflects the work published here:

"At just that crux of time when she is made

So beautiful that she or time must fade."

In the case of many of these works, it is hard to avoid feeling that time faded rather than the images of the women. The photography moves beyond the styles of the day into a timeless sense of beauty and culture.

The images are well chosen to be appealing to an audience today. The quality of paper and reproduction are both superb. The essays and background material are excellent.

....

After you have enjoyed these images, think about the meaning you attribute to the poses these women assume. What are they thinking? How much of a role do you think they played in selecting the poses? What is sophistication in fashion? Mr. Rawlings's impressive work will undoubtedly give you new dimensions for answering these questions.

Let the light show you the way!

5-0 out of 5 stars John Rawlings
I was very impressed by the high quality of this book. It is very well edited and the choice of pictures is just right! You can tell that the author did a lot of research and was able to come up with interesting facts about John Rawlings the man and the photographer. I also enjoyed very much reading about the innovative photographic techniques that Rawlings used. This book is certainly a lesson to all photographers and anyone who is sensitive to beauty.

5-0 out of 5 stars Elegant, refined style
This book is a retrospective collection of the work of a leading commercial photographer active from the late 1930's to the mid 1960's. Most of the pictures are fashion photos, some are Hollywood celebrity portraits, and there are nude figure studies as well. I think the fashion photos are the best part. They are exquisite. The majority were taken from the late 1940's through the decade of the 1950's, which will give you an idea of the style of the clothes and photography (extremely elegant on both counts). Both B&W and color photos are included. The color plates have a lovely unsaturated look (no Velvia used here). The dust jacket photo is from a 1947 Vogue cover.

Those who are looking for classic photography and elegant style will not be disappointed - this is a great book. ... Read more

Book Description

This major new monograph stands as an important rediscovery of a small but central body of work in the career of one of the world's best known and beloved photographers. The Richard Avedonimages presented here, many for the first time, were made in Paris for "Harper's Bazaar" during the 1950s. What is particularly special about this presentation is that the images are being reproduced to the exact scale of the engraver's prints made for Avedon by the master printer Andre Gremola, and are uncropped, on their original mounts, with all of the artist's notations on both front and back. Thus, they provide a remarkable portrait of the working methods of one of the most influential fashion photographers in history. This oversized book, measuring 12 x15 inches,is being printed without compromise with tritone plates throughout, and will be a stunning object in its own right. With this body of work, which includes the photographer's iconographic "Dovima with Elephants, Cirque d'Hiver, 1955", Avedon broke radical new ground in the history of photography. He documented the moment in which postwar France was striving through fashion to reclaim its cultural eminence. Judith Thurman, fashion writer for "The New Yorker" contributes the book's introduction.Edition of 100.

"And if a day goes by without my doing something related to photography, it's as though I've neglected something essential to my existence, as though I had forgotten to wake up. I know that the accident of my being a photographer has made my life possible."-Richard Avedon

"(Avedon) is a passionate artist, always trying to climb inside his image. He gets there, too. It's a self-portrait in the eye of the beholder who is also, and so strenuously, beheld." -Thomas Hess

"Here, for instance, is all that I read in an Avedon photograph, the seven gifts it gives me: first of all, truth, the sensation of truth, the exclamation of truth; then character (pensivity, melancholy, severity, satisfaction, gaiety, etc.); then type (the politician, the writer, the executive); then Eros, a commitment, whether seductive or repulsive, to affect; then death, the corpse's vocation; then too the past, what has been caught, taken, can never come back again, can no longer be touched; lastly. . .lastly the seventh meaning, which is just the one which resists all the rest, the inexpressible supplement, the evidence that, within the image, there is always something else: the inexhaustible, the intractable element of Photography (desire?)." -Roland Barthes

Essay by Judith Thurman.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is great stuff and freshly presented
Who gives a ding-dong if Avedon is mining his archives for book material. This stuff is great and I like the way it has been put together. It's a fun, loose design balanced by elegantly composed and seen photographs. Most of his books have been very clean from start to finish. That wouldn't be good for this project.
This work is wet and playful without losing all the good stuff. It's a fresh jelly donut with the perfect ratio of jelly to donut. At no point during the experience does it fall apart and there is goodness in every page. (...) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Women of Art, Elan, Distinction
Never have I come across a book that is a simultaneous delight and delicious read. Every profile of each trendsetting lady brims with founts of information and inspiration on how and why these 14 remarkable women became icons of style. Describing them as style pioneers would be an understatement. They created classics born from their lifestyles and tastes, grand or modest --- 'living like an indelible individual' and leaving for the whole world to emulate and regard what they've created as style references to themselves and their images. What even made the book poignant is the well-incorporated pacing and focus into the particular situations of their personal lives. That is an important and integral part that provokes and makes every reader, design and style enthusiast comprehend well why these women, however unconscious they are, became icons. They carried themselves well. They had natural panache. They knew what fitted and worked for them. They stood firm with their orientations and preferences. In the end what they left the world was more than staples in design, but lessons on effortless originality, dignity, self-esteem and self-confidence all inevitably contribute to an image that is revered and will never be rusty. These women and this book is fabulously classic!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was intelligently written
and tastefully illustrated with photos and illustrations of 15 extraordinary women who lived the elegant life without effort. I liked the brief biographies of Rita Lydig, Elsie De Wolfe, Babe Paley, Jackie Kennedy and Coco Chanel. Each lady have an unique style that cannot be duplicated. It can be imitated by many people but not duplicated. For example, Elsie De Wolfe's home decorating has influenced many interior designers such as Martha Stewart. Martha has a unique perspective on interior home decorating and entertainment similar to Elsie's. Jackie Kennedy's trend-setting fashions have influenced many American women during the turbulent 60's and beyond. She really taught American women how to live with grace and elegance. The ladies have endured hardships, abusive and unhappy relationships, public scorn, and even scandal to be themselves and not having people, not even their husbands or boyfriends, tell them how to live. This book is for those who want to learn about the unique lives of 15 upper class women. It's the ultimate insider book.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my very fave style books
You need this book if you love fashion. I wish the book was larger; that's my only wish! Some people say they wish there were more colored pictures, but early photography was B&W; for one reason, it captured the nuances of the clothing, and I guess color photography wasn't as prolific in the times that some of these ladies had their heyday. This book is interesting both to READ and to LOOK at! You will pick it up several times a year just to drool over the lovely pictures and re-read the lives and choices of these ladies. It's my very favorite book on style, and I have Ultimate Style: Helena Rubenstein: Over the Top; Oscar de la Renta; Shocking: Elsa Shcaparelli; and I even count Happy Times (Lee Radziwill) as one of my style books. I recommend all of these books, by the way! Also get D.V., Diana Vreeland: The Bazaar Years, and Vreeland if you like Diana Vreeland--=she's a really interesting style icon. Someone needs to put together an exhibit on her for the Metropolitan Museum (since she was the longtime curator of their Costume Institute and she made it what it is today, as far as I can tell from what I've read...incredible style, imagination, and flair!) Please buy this book; you won't regret it. It's a glimpse into a bygone era that still fascinates us and calls on us to imulate it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Style is more than money- someone tell Tapert and Edkins!
I remember I received this book at the tender age of 15, when I was in full adoration mode of Jackie Kennedy. I read it cover to cover on a flight to the West Coast and at that time, I was rapt.
Now, older and wiser, I have to say that this book seems to be little more than the drippingly doting praise of two wealthy, thin, East-Coast women for many other wealthy, thin East-Coast women, with little depth and a rather condescending tone.
Real style is so much more than a well-cut suit or the ability to throw extravagant parties (and when you are as rich as a Vanderbilt, it can't be that hard to acquire these things). Real style is about diplomacy, truth, and talent. The real "Power of Style" doesn't come from what you look like or how much you can spend, but how you present yourself and how you deal with the world. The women described in this book are not so much examples of the power of style, but the power of cash and connections. With the possible exception of Mrs. Kennedy-Onassis, they didn't define the art of living well, they defined the established upper classes who offered very little else to the world than a pretty face and something to read on the society pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better...
I enjoy this book, but my two biggest complaints are the lack of more colorful photos of the houses and clothes these women lived in. For a coffee-table type book, that is kind of important...too many in here are black and white which is unfortunate given the vivid descriptions. I also heartily dislike the sexist contention that these women were all married to alcoholic, indifferent, possibly homosexual weaklings, which is interesting, since none of these women worked but had to rely on said weaklings' money except for Diana Vreeland and Coco Chanel; maybe that is why these two ladies' contributions are the most impressive. Otherwise, the book is somewhat interesting, but nothing spectacular. ... Read more

In this sumptuous new book, Cathy Newman provides a fresh perspective on a fascinating subject. Fashion explores clothing and adornment from a uniquely global perspective, at a time when current fashion is fusing diverse cultural styles as never before.

Lively and provocative essays, drawn from interviews with prominent fashion industry insiders—including contemporary designers, fashion editors, and curators—give new insights into the role fashion has played in history, while Newman’s essays focus on the body adorned, from hair to garb accessories. The book’s introductory essays are written by cultural anthropologist Joanne Eicher and fashion historian Valerie Mendes. Book Description

Any first-time visitor to Japan will be struck by that most beautiful symbol of its ancient culture: the kimono. This book contains a selection of the numerous encounters photographer Paul van Riel had with people wearing kimono all over Japan. Although its popularity has dwindled somewhat over the last 25 years, the national garment of Japan is still deeply rooted in Japanese culture, as these photographs testify. Liza Dalby describes the kimono's transformation from daily clothing to formal wear over the course of the 20th century. Her personal experiences give us a glimpse of the meanings the kimono has for the geisha. Introduction and captions by Liza Dalby, photographs and text by Paul van Riel. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful suprise
... The ... suprise was the book itself. I have to be honest I bought it because Liza Dalby wrote the introduction and because Arthur Golden was quoted saying it was a good book. Having read the books by Liza Dalby and Arthur Golden I wanted to see some pictures of kimono and geisha that were more than just snapshots. And that's exactly what this book does, it gives you 120 beautiful pictures and a lot of information. A wonderful suprise.

The book is neatly divided into sections: - The use of kimono in festivals, - Kimono you see in the street, - Tradition in its manufacture (weaving, spinning, dyeing), - The commercial side of kimono (fitting, kimono shops), - Maiko and Geisha (including some wonderful pictures made at the Nyokoba Geisha Training school on Kyoto), - Men wearing kimono (storytellers, sumo referees, tea ushers, monks) - Kabuki (this is my favorite. You see a kabuki player getting dressed for a female role) - Work (the kimono as a uniform) - Footwear (an interesting detail) Apart from the beautiful pictures this book has an informative introduction by Liza Dalby and with each picture you get a caption that gives you some little piece of insight that changes the way you look at the picture. Having been to Japan this book to me is a souvenir of some of the things I've seen, the people wearing kimono in the street, the festivals. But it also showed me some things I could never see (the behind the stage kabuki pictures and the manufacturing of the kimono). If you have been to Japan you too will recognize some of these pictures. If you have not been to Japan this book gives you a great impression of what to expect (kimono wise that is). Last but not least the book has a beautiful design, it's a great coffee table book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Haunting and "real" fashion images by a master.
I enjoy this collection of Lindbergh's most recent work because of its reality-based imagery, as opposed to plastic fashion photography being done now. I have each of his books and follow the evolution of his work. Here, it seems to have been stripped of as much excess artifice as possible. He eschews the "rules" governing much of today's celebrity-driven fashion imagery. The pictures exude glamour while suggesting a reality and vulnerability of their subjects. I appreciate this book as a telling document of our present time (1990s), and think it is collector-quality. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars THE book of 20th Century fashion
This is the book on fashion - if you only want to buy one book about fashion in the twentieth century, this is the one to buy. Even if you have many books already, buy this anyway. The pictures are fantastic - a great mix of the classics (Dovima and the Elephants is of course included) and some you may not have seen before - and the prose is great, not too flowery but still capturing the art and drama that is fashion. Organised chronologically by decade, this book includes not just an overview of each era, but also informative sections on most of the major designers, including some of the oft-forgotten pioneers such as Lanvin, Fortuny, McCardell and Capucci. There are also articles on various aspects of the fashion industry, from how the clothes are made the idols of each era, costumes in the movies and many more. A beautiful book to look at as well as one of the most informative non-scholarly, this is a fantastic book for any fashionista, whether a total devotee or someone just new to the charms of fashion.he

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one, buy this one
One reviewer said if you have "Couture" dont buy this. Remember Couture is 20 years out-of-date and mostly black and white. This is the book for every fashion student who wants to know each decade's celebrities, looks, designers, etc. It is the whole course in a nutshell (well rather a big heavy nutshell) but still, if you only buy one, buy this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Text Book Worthy
"Fashion" by Seeling is the best book out on the market today when it comes to a survey of 20th century fashion. It is full of fabulous photographs, great historical data, and lists a plethora of designers including more current ones that "Couture" does not. This book is being used as the course textbook for the class "The Great Designers" at Marymount University in Arlington, VA. Thank you to Seeling for providing us with such a great "jumping off" point for our class discussions!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Review
Excellent photographic journey of 20th century style -- not only clothing, but hair and make-up as well. Very similar to COUTURE: THE GREAT DESIGNERS by Caroline Milbank and includes many of the same photos and drawings. FASHION is about 200 pages longer than COUTURE, however, and therefore includes more information, plus is somewhat less costly. If you already have COUTURE, you already have FASHION -- no need to buy both unless it's an area of detailed research. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Why is Naomi so really beautiful?
By putting this book together with taste and great fun, N. demonstrates she is a brainy & nice lady. She also seems to be such a prima donna (in the best sense of the expression, really, that is deserving it) that she defies the more mundane categories of talent & beauty -- she really creates herself with determination &, I think, a huge dose of humor. This book is as pleasant an experience to read/look at than looking from time to time at a favorite painting on the wall of a museum. I don't think it will ever age and that it can illuminate an otherwise dull day.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent
All the pictures are of high quality. The layout is great. There is also an interview with Naomi.A book you would treasure for years.

1-0 out of 5 stars Et tu, Naomi?
Everyone seems to be trying to capitalize on celebrity these days, why should a model be any different? But rather than spill her heart out in juicy tell all, Campbell, obviously figuring there were not enough photographs of her in circulation, toots her own horn in this sappy, silly exercise in narcissism by publishing "never-before-seen photographs" of--who else?--herself! There is Naomi in Thailand, Naomi sans make up, Naomi with family. By the time we read about Naomi's friendship with Nelson Mandela (captioned, of course, under a photo of the two together--who says supermodels have no conscience?) we appreciate why these photos have never been seen before, and further, why they should never be seen again.

4-0 out of 5 stars a must have for naomi's fan's
this book let's you look at naomi in ways you have never seen befor and shows you why she earns tens of thousands strutting on the runway. Twenty dollars is a very cheap price to see her the way you will in this book

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for every fan of Naomi!
Never mind that some may consider publishing a book full of your photos and flattering text about yourself the ultimate narcissism. Naomi's photo biography is a joy to look at ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What the well dressed Flapper was wearing in the 1920s
"1920s Fashions from B. Altman & Company" provides over 700 black & white illustrations, detailed descriptions, and prices for clothing for the upper class of the Jazz Age. The focus is primarily on women's clothing and accessories, with everything from sophisticated evening wear to bathing suits, but you will also find a complete array of clothing for men and children as well. Please remember, because they buy directly from the manufacturer, "thus eliminating the no inconsiderable profits of the middleman," B. Altman & Company are able to offer patrons the benefit of the savings. This is a superb record of the styles worn by flappers in the Roaring Twenties; note than this is not simply the reproduction of a catalog from a particular year, but has fashion culled from the B. Altman catalogs of the entire decade. Interesting Footnote: The B. Altman & Company Department Store is now the New York Public Library Science, Industry & Business Library. Dover also has a reprint edition of "Altman's Spring and Summer Fashions Catalog, 1915," which records the fashions worn in the United States in the years before the First World War. This volume will be of interest to the fashion historian and of great use to costume designers working with this period of American History.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for 1920's fashion fans!
This is a lovely book of a wide variety of catalog drawings and photos from the B. Altman Company which carried higher quality items as compared to the Sears catalog books. There are men's and women's clothes and childrens clothes, hats, undergarments, stockings, shoes...A real treat if you are interested in what the upper middle class might have worn. And everything progresses by the year, so you can see how the fashions developed.

4-0 out of 5 stars insight into 20th century fashion trends
'Fashion - The Twentieth Century' by Francois Baudot is the book to read if you really want to gain an insight into 20th century fashion trends. Its five page bibliography is the most comprehensive list of any fashion book we have come across. Baudot is an expert and this is what makes the book so enjoyable. There are many pictures and the text flows and is very informative. There are also separate features on the important designers/couturiers of the 20th century. A historical review of fashion is presented at the beginning of the book and at the start of each of the eleven sections.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive!
Fashion books tend to focus in on one subject or personality, or sometimes a series of related subjects. Fashion, the Twentieth Century is an entirely comprehensive look into the world of fashion and how it has developed over the past century. The book is divided into two "chapters", and delves into many different sub-topical areas of fashion interest. It focuses on different fashion eras, as well as different popular (and avant-garde!) designers over the past 100 years. Although I tend to enjoy a more single subject type of fashion book, I found this book useful for its depth of many topics, not to mention some interesting and gorgeous fashion photography. As a sort of fashion encyclopedia, it will make a useful addition to any fashionista's library. ... Read more

Book Description

From the author of the bestselling Audrey Style

Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy Onassis was known by many names, but to us, she is Jackie. And whether she liked it or not, she was, and still is, the most famous woman in the world.

"No one else looked like her, spoke like her, wrote like her, or was so original in the way she did things," said her brother-in-law Senator Edward Kennedy. Her style -- what made her Jackie -- has been emulated, imitated, even occasionally reviled, but never fully examined. For the first time, this biography details the singular life that made Jackie an icon and contributed so greatly to her enduring appeal. Drawing on original interviews with Valentino, Hubert de Givenchy, Manolo Blahnik, and Oleg Cassini, as well as close friends C. Z. Guest, George Plimpton, and John Loring, and family members such as Joan Kennedy, Hugh D. Auchincloss, and John Davis, this compelling volume brings to life the private Jackie her family and friends loved.

With one hundred rare color and black-and-white photographs and sketches, and never-before-published personal letters, memos, and essays, Jackie Style re-creates not only Jackie's extraordinary history -- fashion being just one part of it -- but the world she came from, the White House she revived, the husband and children she adored, the causes she supported, and, finally, the life she chose to lead.

4-0 out of 5 stars Jackie Style lush but lacking.
I was attracted to this book by its feel and the promise of learning more about that certain "something" Jackie radiates. After mentally debating the price, my lust for more Jackie style information won out and I purchased it. It is a substantial book in many ways but weak in others. The beginning of the book is awkward as the author describes what Jackie was thinking after her husband won the Presidency. How could the author know? The authors assumptions immediately made me question the rest of the books authenticity. As I read through the book however, the author changed tactics and began to describe the first lady using research that was factually supported. She discusses Jackie's upbringing, her role as young woman, and beyond. Though most of the information has been written about before, several aspects were elaborated on to add a new twist and make them more interesting. For example, I had read many times about Jackie winning Vogue magazines Prix de Paris competition, but never in the detail Keough gives. There are a number of photographs in the book but unfortunatly the way they are presented lacks impact. Many are black and white, others small for the page, few are new, and in general they don't have the luster that they could. For example, p.182 has a full size, black and white photograph of Jackie with flowers fully covering her face. If this is one of the never seen photographs Keough promises well I can see why. Another page is devoted to a full color photo of Ari Onasis. Since the full color photos of Jackie are few why not make it one of her? Pamela Keoughs previous book Audrey Style had a much better selection of pictures that made an impression! There are also some line sketches of Jackie in a pillbox. The sketch looks more like Anjelica Houston. The information in the book is broad. The author has obviously done alot of research and she relays the information with her fresh perspective. But many readers will wish for more information about Jackie's STYLE not her life history. For those just beginning to read about Jackie this will be a good introduction but to those familiar with her and the books about her this will be a rehash and retelling.

4-0 out of 5 stars Oh Jackie!
Pam Keogh's clear and stunning portrait of Jackie Kennedy Onassis gives the reader aspects of this complex and intriguing woman from the inside out. It is a warm and visually beautiful view of JKO that goes beyond what she wore where. If you want a glimpse of the private Jackie, buy this book!

2-0 out of 5 stars Nice, but nothing about Jackie's fashion.
I think it's great that there are authors like Keogh around. You can tell that she really wants to portray Jackie at her best. But the problem is that this book is written in a cut and paste way, and despite what the dustcover says, there is nothing new and revealing at all. Let me explain more.

First of all, this book is called JACKIE STYLE, but it is really just a popcorn biography. Keogh claims that she has new interviews that reveal new insights about Jackie. Well, tell me, how does the designer Cynthia Rowley saying she admired how Jackie dressed reveal new insights into Jackie, the person, the first lady, and everything that Jackie was and became??????

Then, there is the claim that there is over 100 black and white, and color, photos of Jackie that have never been seen before. Not true; with the exception of 25 or less, all have been published before. And the 25 are not of Jackie, but of her friends, or a date, or a Kennedy.

This book is written well, but is just isn't about her fashion. There are good photos in the bood, and Keogh does have an inviting writing style, even if she tends to sometimes overpraise her subjects, but it is not about Jackie's style.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Is An Amazing Book
I am a voracious reader of all things biographical - memoirs, historical, famous people etc. This book struck me as suceeding on many levels: it is a respectful history of an American icon, it is a well-researched and thorough pictorial panorama of Jackie's life, and it is a fun romp through a period of our past with which, it is safe to say, many many people are still fascinated all these years later. Ms. Keogh has taken a subject well-known and certainly oft-discussed and written about and given it a fresh spin and a new approach. I greatly enjoyed every page of this book and will treasure it as a valuable addition to my library. Well done Ms. Keogh!!

1-0 out of 5 stars This book is a big ZERO in my book.
I really liked the Audrey Hepburn book in this series and looked forward to the Jackie Kennedy book, but when I read it, I was annoyed by how shallow and trite it turned out to be. Where's the elegant Jackie Kennedy? The brave Jackie Kennedy? The STYLISH Jackie Kennedy?

The worst part were the stupid Jackie Kennedy Make Up tips that looked ABSOLUTELY NOTHING LIKE HER.

A big ZERO in my book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fine guide to an all-too-rare element of men's style
A boutonniere is so rarely seen these days that any man who wears one will almost automatically set himself apart from the crowd. The trick, of course, it to do it in a way that suggests timeless artistry, and not that water will come squirting out of it, or that the wearer is a refugee from the junior prom. There's a big difference between a stylish mini carnation tucked into your buttonhole and a giant mass of babies-breath and rose held on with a safety pin.

This handy little guide is all most men should need to navigate the largely unknown waters of boutonniere-wearing. Much of the book, necessarily, traces flower-wearing through history, with a focus on the British royal family and various dandies of times past. A few profiles of modern men who keep the tradition alive are also included, as well as helpful suggestions about various types of flowers to wear, what to wear with what kind of jacket, and even alternatives to the jacket lapel like vests and overcoats.

Take a stand for personal style and start wearing a flower from time to time. If you're unsure about how or whether, let this book help you get started. Once you do, you may never look back.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Sense of Style
The Boutonniere Style in One's Lapel is a great book. It is lovely just to page through. It is interesting to read . And it looks great just laying around the apartment. There are so many great pictures of famous people, stars and royality, all wearing a boutonniere. You seldom see boutonnieres any more and that's a pity. Such a small addition to the clothes a man wears but such a great fashion plus. This book helps you appreciate the boutonniere.

4-0 out of 5 stars A special book: informative, elegant, and well illustrated
I recently purchased this book at a local Brioni clothing dealer, and I've been pleased with its content. The book is brief, but this is such a specialized topic that it is abundant enough.

The book starts with a historic narration of flowers in men's clothing, moves on, to more recent well-dressed men that wear them, and then to examples of elegant more modern combinations that include the use of boutonnieres.

This is not a "picture book" only, it includes essays on the topics that are well written and inspire the reader to become an impeccable dresser, and this is what Brioni is all about. ... Read more
