5-0 out of 5 stars Good for school math class projects and puzzles.
I keep seveal sets of different small books like this (in multiple copies) for my 9th grade math students when it comes time to do display projects and make vocal presentations. This one fits very well into the scheme when it comes to short items. Class is always attentive (more than to me!).

Well illustrated, big print, and 130 puzzles (with solutions in the rear) of which I easily suggest about 4 dozen for project use, and others for personal or small group amusement. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good solid puzzles of varying degrees of difficulty
The puzzles in this book will excite and entertain you. While many of them are based on routine puzzle themes, they are still of interest. Some are simple enough for middle school children and others are best left to adults. What makes all of this so much fun is that most times you can't tell the difference at first glance. Which is what makes puzzles so interesting. The best seem easy when they are hard and hard when they are easy. There are 128 puzzles in this collection, and while there are some groaners and head slappers, none are dull. This book is well worth reading. ... Read more

Book Description

Puzzle these out! Math and logic become more fun than ever when they're turned into brainteasing games. Some of these puzzles use cards or marbles; others have diagrams, grids, and lively illustrations; still more present their questions as a story or riddle. Here are just two examples: Look at this sentence: Dale is wrong. Using all these letters, can you spell a single word? Or try Non-aligned Pawns: How must the 8 white and 8 black pawns in a chess set be placed on a board so that no three pawns end up in the same horizontal, vertical, or diagonal line? They'll really test your smarts!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mathematics is for all
Today I was able to prove once again that mathematics is not just for a few. Challenging Brainteasers taught me how mathematics are not only fun but accesible to all. Besides enjoyig solving many of these brainteasers it provided me with many fine tools to work with my own children and students problems that I previously thought were imposible. A big clap for Recamán.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful for the classroom
I have found this fine collection of puzzles a wonderful source to stimulate my mathematics students. There are problems and puzzles of all levels of difficulty, and on a wide range of topics. Some are classics in a revised form but lots are new to me. All are great fun.

2-0 out of 5 stars leaf through before you buy
Many curent puzzle books feature puzzles that are just old chestnuts dressed up in more modern language or settings, and this book, I'm afraid, is one of those.

Well, maybe I'm being a bit too critical. It's an OK collection if you're new to puzzles. But if you're a seasoned puzzle person, you really should leaf through it and judge by yourself whether it's good enough to fork down your hard earned dollars.

Oh, and the Mensa stamp of intellectual arrogance on the cover? Believe me, as a collector of puzzle books, it's no guarantee that the puzzles inside are that much more original than average fare - in fact, I find it downright pretentious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recamán Santos is a real brain teaser
I've been a student and a disciple of Professor Recamán for several years. Needless to say that his work, like all his life accomplishments are an example to be followed. Bright, witty, irreverent, with a passion for life and an outstanding sense of humour, he is definitely a magister teaser.

5-0 out of 5 stars Having fun with numbers and logic
It is always rewarding to find that you do have a knowledge of mathematics and logic you have not been aware of. This wonderful little book offers puzzles and enigmas you can solve applying your mathematical abilities. It is clever, interesting and above all fun. Its a teaser and a great companion to idle hours. Great! ... Read more

Book Description

It's true--playing with numbers can raise your I.Q., and help you think more clearly! The most popular numbers games are math puzzles, and you've come to the right place to find 100 examples of the best. Here's an example: Find the shortcut for adding 2, 3, and 4 to form 6 different 3-digit numbers. Or, try this one: What is the smallest number that when multiplied by 3 gives an answer consisting of all 4's? Other games and puzzles involve flipping coins, burning candles, and taking apart a Rubik's cube in your head. (There's also a puzzle called Cubic's Rube.) Still others challenge you to nab a thief based on his lies, and figure out how a sheep survives in a pen with 16 very hungry but very logical lions, but would be eaten quickly if there were only 15.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the standard references of recreational maths.
I can't believe no one has already added a review of
this well-known and frequently referenced book. Perhaps
none was necessary as it is so widely known. The "Master
book" is often cited by other authors - Gardiner,
Berlekamp-Conway-Guy, etc. This book belongs in any
serious recreational mathematician's reference library
along with "Mathematical Recreations and Essays", "Winning
Ways", "Amusements in Mathematics". It is published by
Dover and is a high quality republication of a classic
at a very low price. Top value for money. ... Read more

Amaze your friends and stump your parents with number magic tricks! You don't have to own a magician's equipment to perfect each feat--you just practice it a few times. Some tricks turn you into a mind reader, such as the one where somebody rolls some dice, stacks them, and you tell everyone the total numbers on the hidden dots. Or, reveal the number a friend has chosen from a list on a piece of paper. Or, guess a word someone has chosen from a dictionary. Then try some new card tricks, and finish by drawing a line on a piece of paper with only one side, and a magic origami trick of turning an 8. From the author of Math Magic.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but has a Hungarian taste!
...
This book is good! Problems from IMO are really amongst the best in the world, so what else do you expect? It really took many years and brains for these problems to come into existence indeed, though we all know that some problems are just important results or just special cases of some research problems relatively unknown to people not in the mathematical field. The book provides some multiple solutions and methods where possible, though it is not possible to include all possible solutions. Not even the greatest mathematician can say that there are only finitely many ways to approach a problem. So you may well on your way to discovering more solutions, even more elegant ones, who know? Enough blabbering.
The book only contains problems and solutions from 1959-1999, and only that. No other information can be gleaned from this book essentially. Matters which have raised curiosity like the proposers of each problem, the venues of the competition as well as the dates are not found in the book.
One last comment, the book was originally a Hungarian book, and it took three translators of Hungarian descent to translate the book. The language used is not perfect, and has a Hungarian taste, but it will not impede your reading. So I took one star off. I hope this is not too drastic.
