If there ever was a pair of docs who can make the small intestine seem truly intriguing, here they are. Dr. Mehmet Oz is an alternative-medicine maverick and a cardiologist known to implement acupuncture during open-heart surgery. Dr. Michael Roizen developed the RealAge concept of calculating one's biological, as opposed to chronological, age. Here they've whipped up a witty guide to the workings of the entire body, appropriate not just for those who can't tell their pancreas from their pituitary. Even Cheers’ Cliff Claven types who think they know it all will likely be humbled by the 50-question "body-quotient" quiz that starts off the book.

With much sassy humor (they describe the adrenals as similar in shape to Mr. Potato Head's hat), they give a guided tour of the body's anatomy and major systems (hormonal, nervous, digestive, sensory, etc.) including plenty of fascinating trivia along the way. How often should you get your thyroid level checked? How much gas does the average person produce in a day? And, most importantly, how many times a year do most people have sex??Drs. Oz and Roizen know. They also reveal plenty of bizarre (and potentially life-saving) facts such as this: If your earlobe has a prominent vertical wrinkle, it's likely that your arteries are aging faster than they ought to be. If only 8th-grade health class had been this fun.

The docs' main goal in presenting all this info is twofold: firstly, it's your body, so shouldn't you finally learn how it works? And, secondly, they want to help teach ways of preserving the body's health and youthfulness. To that end, they've included an "Owner's Manual Diet," a 10-day menu plan designed not for weight loss, but to make you feel "years younger." Its simple recipes are each meant to benefit a certain body system, such as Tomato Bruschetta, packed with the antioxidant lycopene, which has been proven to boost immunity. --Erica Jorgensen ... 5-0 out of 5 stars We Need This Info!
This book is in large print, has relevant information, dispels myths and gives us real, no-nonsense advice about our bodies. Very well written and put together.

I found it to be an easy read and after skipping around I decided I'd learn more by reading it cover-to-cover. I've never had a book like this that I really read every chapter fully.

I recommend it for everyone. The info sticks with you and I find myself making better decisions on what I eat every day AND how my body works and reacts to the food and I'm fueling it with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank Heaven!

5-0 out of 5 stars So great to be in the know!
I loved getting taken through a tour of all the highways, back roads, and landmarks inside of my body. I feel better able to make decisions regarding my healthcare and that of my family after having read this book. It was also fun to take the quiz that tests your body of knowledge.

I also purchased "The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book" and had a great time getting taken through the mind, how I think and how the brain works. A good pairing, I guess!

5-0 out of 5 stars Goodbye To Fad Diets - Say Hello To Your Own Body
This is a great book that will explain to you how your body works. You may know how a DVD player works, but do you know how your own body works? Sadly, the answer is most likely that you do not know how your own body works. Of course, it is far more complex than a DVD player. Yet, it is far more important that you know how you body works than it is that you know how that DVD player works.

This book is your own owners manual for your own body. To be healthy you have to understand all of the various bodily functions, how they work, and what you need to do to keep everything running smoothly and in a healthy state. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Results Driven
Well I have to say that I was shocked at the results I received even without exercise and a little cheating while on the detox track, I lost 5 pounds. Now imagine if you keep to the 11 day plan for the detox and do some mild-moderate exercise? The results can be endless!! I also noticed how much clearer my skin has been since on being on the Fast Track detox diet. I am definitely going to continue on the Fast Track!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Idea, but too much hype
There is one thing that I absolutely agree with Ann Luise - the amount of chemicals that we are exposed to in our daily lives is overwhelming. I think that cleansing our bodies from them ("unchemicalizing ourselves") from time to time is a very good idea. There are several other authors that pointed to this problem in the past. There are also a few who suggested better or worse cleansing solutions. My favorite to date was Mikhail Tombak who offers total body cleansing solutions (starting with the liver, via kidney, intestines, bones and joints, and ending with blood) in one of the chapters of his book Can We Live 150 Years. The other author dealing extensively with this topic in her few books is Hulda Clark. Gittleman's Detox Diet is only a good addition to the anthology. I do, however, have a problem with the "eight pounds weight loss in a day" idea. Isn't this just a little over-promising?

4-0 out of 5 stars Always interesting
Even if it's not quite an overnight diet, there's always something helpful, tips, ideas, tactics, that you can take away from one of Ann Louise Gittleman's books and incorporate into your weight loss approach.

Definitely one for my weight loss library!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A great "non-diet" way to lose weight AND regain energy!
This is yet another of Ann Louise Gittleman's sound nutritional plans to safely and effectively lose weight AND regain health and energy. Yesterday was my last day of the 11-day Fast Track and I lost a total of 13.5 pounds!! I lost 10 lbs on the prequel, 3.5 lbs on the one-day fast, and maintained during the sequel. I'm thrilled!! I'll be Fast Tracking it every 6-8 weeks because I FEEL GREAT!!

Even during the one-day fast I wasn't really that hungry and I slept great that night and woke up the next morning feeling more rested and energetic than ever...AND 3.5 lbs lighter!! I'm totally amazed at how great I feel and how much weight I lost in 11 days because, honestly, I didn't feel like I went hungry or really did without.

I did give up my beverage of choice, coffee, and did really miss it for a few days. But now I find myself craving cranwater even more than coffee...lol!

I'm going into Gittleman's Fat Flush plan now to continue to lose the remaining 50 lbs I have to lose. I'll combine it with another Fast Track Detox session every few weeks to jumpstart my metabolism and add some variety. This is a very "non-diet" way to lose weight, especially when you have 50+ lbs like I do. As an added bonus is all the energy I have and the fact that I feel healthier than ever at 44!

Thanks for a great plan, once again, Ann Louise!

5-0 out of 5 stars Plateau Buster
What a great experience!I lost 4.5 lbs in the prequel and 3 lbs on the fast day for a total of 7.5 lbs in all.The best news is that was last week and the weight is still off. Thanks Ann Louise! This has helped kick start my weight loss again after being on a stubborn plateau.I plan on doing the fast again next month. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It's Foodelicious!
This is another great cookbook from Weight Watchers. One measure of its success is that non-dieting friends for whom I've prepared some of the dishes always ask me for the recipes. The Roast Pork Puertoricano (pork tenderloin marinated in orange, garlic, cumin, and jalepeno then roasted to perfection) and Dolmades (vegetarian, but easily convertable to carnivore) alone are worth the price of admission. As with other WW cookbooks, the lack of portion size is inconvenient. But the pros far overshadow the cons: tasty, easy, and fast recipes the whole family will enjoy; WW 1-2-3 Points and nutritional information; good mix of vegetarian and nonvegetarian recipes; ingredients call for realistic and easily purchased food; complete instructions so novice cooks aren't scared off. The recipes in this book take some of the sting out of watching one's weight. For that, it's a bargain at twice the price.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a really great cookbook
Even for non-weight watchers these are some really good, useful and tasty recipes. There are alot of recipes (over 500) and great color pictures. The recipres include *re-dos* of some common high fat items ( like sauses, dressings, dips desserts, cream soups) Entrees for poultry, beef pork, lamb, fish shellfish, pasta... its very comprehensive. Even thos there are some ethnic recipes the ingredients required dont seem far out and could be gotten in most grocery stores alot of the time. The only thing i have a bit of trouble with is that the points are calculated for *serving size* but you dont know if that is a cup or a few ounces...or whatever. It makes it a bit hard sometimes to figure out, when cooking for a family, if you will need to double a recipe to feed everyone. but that is really a minor point..... there is also a section on breads where the points seem closer to the diet-breads than the regular breads but look womderful. The dessert section is very good and the sweetner seems to be used is sugar, not a substitute. You could use a substitute yourself... but there seems to be a general emphasis on *real* ingredients..which is nice. The book itself, being plastic spiral bound is VERY nice as it sits flat on a kitchen counter and makes following a recipe directly from the book very easy. It is set up for using the winning point system but also includes other nutritional values (cal, fat,cholesterol,sodium..fiber..protein etc) I can see it being helpful on alot of diets becuase the info is so inculsive. There is a section on nutrition in the beginning and a short explanation of the winning points system. Certainly not as complete as you would get at a WW meeting...but you will be able to see how many points, for your size, you should be eating. And there are 6 pages of general point values. Also very helpful if you dont go to ww or want to substitute in a recipe. This is a very good cook book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Need to specify a serving size
WW has great recipes but they've done my pet peeve again! It is so annoying to look at, for instance, the soup you just made and be forced to either guess at 1/8 or measure the whole batch of soup and then extract an 1/8. Why not: Serving size 1 1/2 cup?

3-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was hoping for.
No what I thought. I was hoping for more pictures and lower point recipes. Most meals called for several ingredients. Working full time and lack of cooking experience made this book difficult to fit into my schedule. Hoped more recipes would have me grilling in pam to cut out the unnecessary points in butter and oil.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, with a few problems
Like any cookbook, you're not going to love everything. There are some hits and misses here. Fortunately, so far, I've experienced far more of the good than bad. For instance, I can't say enough about how great the Chicken Quesadillas, Tomato Basil Pizza, Beef Chili and Balsamic Veal Chops are. I will avoid like the plague the Chicken Hash and the Roast Beef and Arugula.

What is really lacking from this cookbook, however, is the absence of portion sizes. Like other reviewers have pointed out, this is not a big deal if you are serving up a baked item. But for something like the Beef Chili, you are forced to divide up the meal upon completion just to see what one serving out of four looks like. This is extremely annoying.

Aside from that, the recipes are very easy to make. (Note: when making a dish, trust your instincts. If it seems like too much spinach is being used, like in the Spinach Fettuccine, it probably is. Cut back.)

What I appreciate is the variety, which means you won't get bored and look to that bag of Fritos for comfort.
Despite some shortcomings, I'm still giving this four stars because when this book is on, it's on. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Waiting Patiently
I'm on day 7 of the fast and I am feeling sick....weak and experiencing nausea. However, I'm sticking with it. I had a headache for a couple of days but that has subsided. My sister and her husband went on the fast, and raved over it. They did not experience any of the side effects I encountered. I think that is because they don't eat meat, have done a fast before and are more active than I. Is that telling me something? I am having several bowel movements consisting of mucous and other debris. I also had a cold (and still do) when I began the fast, so that may have made the fast a little harder on me. I haven't used the sea salt, but use the laxative tea faithfully. I have not once felt hungry and didn't even mind my husband eating a fried fish dinner with all the trimmings in front of me. I can't wait for day 10 to arrive. I just hope I feel all of the energy and relief from my sinus problems. I forgot to mention I've lost 8 lbs. as of today. I plan to adopt a healthy way of eating when I resume eating food again.

5-0 out of 5 stars irreplaceable tool for a healthy lifestyle, it's my "Bible"
I first discovered the fast in Germany during my travels, but did not know it had a name. I was modeling & needed to lose weight. Another model gave me the formula, but only knew it "through the grapevine". In Europe, a commercialization of the fast is available in health food stores. It comes with a little pack of cayenne and directions, but the syrup is a combo of cane & grade B, which is not as good as organic dark Grade B. Several years ago, a company began marketing "Lemon Fast" in health food stores across the U.S. Again, it is the same as the European version. After researching, I discovered the Burroughs foundation in California and ordered several copies of the book from his daughter. I lost, in all, more than 30 pounds over a period of time. I now maintain a vegetarian/mostly vegan lifestyle and cleanse at least twice yearly for 10 days to 2 weeks. My energy is not decreased but instead soars. I am still a professional model. I hand out copies of the book to everyone who is interested and who questions me as to how I stay slim. I cannot tell you how many "normal people" have changed their lives following Mr. Burroughs program. And to think it was written over 50 years ago!! This is one book the drug companies would rather you not have, for sure. It cures everything, including my hypoglycemia, anemia, and cravings. It reassures one of the power of the mind and healing ability of the body. Stick with it for at least 10 days and remember, if you cheat, you're only cheating yourself. Good Luck Everyone. Health and Happiness. *P.

FYI helpful hints... *We now have great 'diet teas' available at pharmacies and health food stores that contain psyllium husk or senna. This can be drunk the night before you begin your fast and again the following night, essentially eliminating the need for the uncomfortable internal-salt-water-bath. Have a diluted version first, as the strength of these items is not regulated and some are quite strong. And leave yourself a couple of hours the first morning to, well, eliminate. The discomfort will pass...get through the first two days and you're home free. Get through the first five and you don't even want the lemonade anymore. *If you feel a wave of nausia or a dizzy spell, it is your body eliminating toxins or passing waste out of your body. DO NOT think it is because you need food. It takes a 24-hr no-food period to begin the cleansing process & eating defeats all the work you've put into it. Breathe deep, and thank yourself for finally cleansing that stuff out. The feeling will pass in a few minutes. You may need to drink an elimination tea that night. *Try the mixture with lemon/lime combos and try it hot. It's delicious. Carry a small water bottle in your purse/case of the lemonade without water[concentrate]. Add to hot water or plain water at work or restaurants if you find you must accompany others. *Herbal tea and green tea is allowed, and helps to avoid caffeine headaches from your coffee withdrawl. It also gives you an alternative to the lemonade and keeps you hydrated. *Stay strong in your mind, focussed on your goal, and don't believe others who tell you you're crazy. They are silently envying your willpower. You don't know until you try

3-0 out of 5 stars Tried it with moderate success
I bought this book on a whim. It was a cheap book and sounded like a fast way to reduce weight in a healthy way.

I've had moderate success with this book, which is essentially the lemonade diet. I bought the ingredients, tried it for several days, and lost about 10 pounds in 6 days. The lemonade mixture was able to satisfy my hunger adequately. I didn't feel fantastic, but I felt fine, with no problems.

The book is somewhat "New-Agey" and gets into the subject of toxins and disease and natural cleansing. I wasn't really concerned with that, and readers will have varying opinions of Burroughs' hypotheses.

This is a good system if you really want to lose weight quickly and are ready to commit. Or just try it for a while and see how long you can go.

5-0 out of 5 stars An eclectic bunch, we are
Our reading club is an eclectic bunch. You have no idea HOW electic! We read everything from the lastest bestsellers like "Da Vinci Code" and "Bark of the Dogwood" to Hilary Clinton's book and, yes, even this one: THE MASTER CLEANSER. Open minded is the one thing we all have in common. So let me just say that this little book has completely changed our lives (and that of our husbands, wives, and kids---even the dog). Folks, this one's going to take off, and how! Highly, highly recommend for anyone interested in the quality of life!

4-0 out of 5 stars Much easier than expected!
Reading the book almost discouraged me to try it. There were no hunger pangs, no nausea, no stomach cramping. I did experience a slight light-headed (spacey) feeling once or twice but this went away as soon as I drank the lemonade. I was able to take my medication successfully and the "cleansing" process was not as bad as it seems. If you need to be away from home you can actually skip a day of cleansing and pick up the following day. Going back to solid food was no problem for me although I do not recommend meat as your first meal, as my husband came to find out, it's very heavy, ease into that one.
We are now incorporating the lemonade by using it to skip a meal and snacks. We have not gained any weight back by doing this and recommend using it to skip meals if you can't make the real commitment to doing it 24/7. Good Luck to everyone. Also, there are many web sites and message boards with people who can help with questions about the Master Cleanser diet which I found helpful. ... Read more

    Book Description

"The medicine of the new millennium."--Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words

Dr. Mehmet Oz, celebrated heart surgeon and co-founder of the Complementary Care Center at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, is spearheading the health-care revolution that is yielding powerful new healing tools that will forever change the way we think of medicine. In this ground-breaking book, he describes his pioneering work--combining cutting-edge Western medicine with such Eastern techniques as acupuncture and chi-gong, as well as such controversial therapies as hypnosis, music, massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, and energy healing. The inspiring and affecting stories of his patients are the heart of this book--from the extraordinary discipline of Frank Torre, who used his professional sports training to "psych" himself into healing after heart transplant surgery, to the "impossible" recovery of blues great Johnny Copeland, who was roused from a seemingly impenetrable coma through the force of his own music. In recounting his patients' experiences, Dr. Oz forges a blueprint for the radical new medicine of the next millennium--drawing on the best from Eastern and Western therapies and empowering patients to become partners with doctors in promoting their own recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars YES, a powerful voice for Medicine with Hope and Warmth!
An inspiring doctor with a powerful but gentle voice. The more medicine opens up like this the better we are all going to be. I think everyone should read this book. Also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is "Effortless Wellbeing: The Missing Ingredients for Authentic Wellness" by Evan Finer. Though not a medical book, it is a concise and extremely powerful guide to compliment any healing program, to induce true wellness and to help regain personal strength. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING. Thank you to the authors!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Medicine of the Future
Dr. Oz is an accomplished heart surgeon in the field of cardiac transplantation. He describes how he combines complementary medicine (e.g. hypnosis, reflexology, yoga, message, acupuncture. Etc) with orthodox Western medicine. There is an excellent forward by Dr Dean Ornish, and an interesting epilogue containing an overview of the complementary medicine techniques. The bulk of the book contains stories of patients Dr. Oz treated using this revolutionary way. I am a cardiologist, and I have a great interest in combining western medicine with complementary medicine, which is the reason I bought this book. However this book was a bit boring to read and was also a bit of a disappointment. Nevertheless, those interested in this new medicine, which I think will be the medicine of the new millennium, will want to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC BOOK - SUPERBLY WRITTEN!
What is impressive about this book is the author's concepts of healing both heart and mind as he points out just how closely the two are interconnected. The writing style is one that will grasp the reader's attention from start to finish. The approach to holistic health is a welcome approach to healing. It is a concept that is gradually increasing in the health care field, but one that still has a long way to go before it is universally accepted by all physicians. More education and information needs to be provided in this area to all health care providers. Using the holistic approach, there can be fewer side effects from medication, less depression and a general feeling of well being during the most trying and difficult times. There is much to be said on combining Western and Eastern traditions in the process of healing. Our world can benefit dramatically from this approach and the author vividly explains why throughout the pages of this well-researched and superbly written book. It is highly recommended reading material and most deserving of a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of the year
A great book describing an insiders view of what total healing can mean in today's complex medical care system. The book has deservedly won the Books for Better America award for Best Wellness Book of the Year and should be required reading for all patients contemplating surgery.

Dr. Mehmet has given me a new perspective on holistic health and disease. As my mother is going through the breast cancer battle, I am incorporating many of his suggestions for heart patients: soothing music after the mastectomy, foot massages as she fades in and out of conciousness, arranging to have someone loved at the bedside constantly. I am looking into getting a masseuse to come in and perform foot massage as her body receives chemotherapy. As a result of this, her attitude is positive and I believe that has a grave impact on how her body reacts to all of this trauma. I'm waiting impatiently for his next book. ... Read more

The keys to overweight are liver toxicity, waterlogged tissues, fear of eating fat, excess insulin, and stress, asserts nutritionist Ann Louise Gittleman. Her Fat Flush Plan addresses these problems with a targeted diet.

The Fat Flush Plan, filled with nutritional analysis and detailed explanations, is not a quick read. Despite Gittleman's assertion that the plan is "as easy as 1-2-3," it is quite regimented. No white flour, white sugar, margarine, vegetable shortening, artificial sweeteners, or caffeine. The diet emphasizes essential oils (e.g., flaxseed and GLA), protein (eight ounces or more, plus two eggs a day), vegetables, thermogenic spices (e.g., ginger and cayenne), water, and diuretic beverages (eight glasses/day of diluted, unsweetened cranberry juice). In its first two-week phase, the plan is a rigid, low calorie (1,100-1,200 calories/day), low-carb (no grains or starchy vegetables) diet. Phase two lets you increase your calories to 1,500 and add two "friendly carbs." Phase three, the "lifestyle program," moderately adds more dairy, carbs, and calories. Gittleman promotes walking and recommends strength training in phase three.

The book includes 41 recipes such as Grilled Lamb Chops with Cinnamon and Coriander, Breakfast Egg Fu Yung, and Cumin Sautéed Scallops. The Fat Flush Plan is recommended for dieters willing to commit to a strict plan for weight loss. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost Weight and Stayed Off
I'd just like to say that the Fat Flush plan really works! Three months ago, I bough this book on a whim. I tried the Fat Flush plan for 1 week. I did not complete the 2 week program because I got a new job and was moving to a new place. Basically, my routine was thrown off.

The first two days were difficult, I was irritable, and tired due to withdrawal symptoms forewarned by the author. But I pulled through and on the third day, I was feeling fine again. By the end of the week, I had lost 9 pounds! I have never been able to lose this much weight in such a short time in my life. The great thing was that I did not have to miss any meals or spend 4 hours at the gym.

I still have 25 more pounds to go, but I justed wanted Dr. Gittleman to know the most amazing thing. Although I only stuck with the Plan 1 for a week, I have not gained back a single pound even though I am now keeping my diet prior to Fat Flush. It know is not the best practice, which is why I am planning to go back on the Fat Flush Plan very soon.

For those of you who are wondering if this works, please give it a try. I feel that the ingredients in the recipes promote great health and you should do it for your health, if not anything else.

5-0 out of 5 stars So Much More Than Just A Diet!
The book The Fat Flush Plan is amazing! Not only does Ms. Gittleman describe each of the three phases of her weight loss plan in detail - including sample menus, she educates the reader about how the body processes, stores, and burns fat and explains how people are sabotaging their efforts to lose weight in the chapter "Five Hidden Weight Gain Factors." In addition, Ms. Gittleman includes an exercise component, tips for eating out, a master shopping list, some recipes, a frequently asked questions chapter, and a resource section on where to find the Fat Flush ingredients. She does all of this in an easy and caring manner. This plan is so much more than a diet. It truly is a long-term healthy life-style eating plan that will ultimately make you thinner, more energetic, and feel and look younger.

In The Fat Flush Plan, Ms. Gittleman emphasizes the importance of "detox." The liver is one of the key elements to weight loss. It needs to function properly and efficiently. This is why Phase 1 of the plan is so crucial. The detox process cleans out the liver so that it can do its job better. When purging all the "toxins" from the liver and body, there may be some side effects - from mild to severe. At first the side effects may make you feel badly, but after a few days, you will begin to feel better and finally you will feel great! I was one of the lucky ones for the only side effect of the detox process I experienced was a mild headache as a result of eliminating the several diet cokes I consumed in a day.

The Fat Flush Plan can help everyone whether you have just 10 pounds to lose or if you have more than 75 pounds to lose. It has certainly helped me. I had a little bit of extra weight that I just couldn't seem to lose. To date, I have lost 12 pounds and I am back to wearing a size 4, but best of all, I feel wonderful! My sister-in-law has lost around 90 pounds down from a size 24 to a size 10. Even my 20 year old daughter has lost five pounds and reshaped her body in less than three weeks by using the Fat Flush Kit and following Phase 3 of the Plan.

Be sure to check out Ms. Gittleman's web site for additional information and support. She offers an online forum in which people post their tips, recipes, and can ask questions about the plan. To get there, go to www.fatflush.com then click on "support" at the top of the page. When the new page comes up, click on "Fat Flush Forum" on the left hand side of the page. The Forum will appear. Anyone can view it, but if you would like to participate, you must set up a username and password. It is so easy...to quote Ms. Gittleman, "There are no quick fixes - but the Fat Flush Plan comes close."

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting but Perhaps a Bit Outdated
There is no question that Gittleman has an interesting plan here for weight loss. Her focus is upon purging the liver of toxins in that the liver metabolizes fat and so, if the liver is impaired or sluggish, then the body's ability to lose fat is affected. This is an interesting premise and one that many of the diet specialists who emphasize detoxifying diets strongly support. The main culprit in many of these detoxifying diets is caffeine, and Gittleman is no exception here. She states that caffeine stresses the liver and so should be eliminated--especially in the first 2 weeks of the diet, which are the most restrictive. This book has a 2002 publication date, and the question is whether new research supports this view or not. Actually, no. On May 18, 2004, researchers from the National Institute of Diabetes and of Digestive and Kidney Disease in Bethesda, Maryland and from Yale University made a presentation to the Digestive Disease Week annual conference in New Orleans that confirmed after an extensive study of 5,944 men and women at high rsik for liver injury due to excessive drinking, hepatitis B and C, obseity, or impaired sugar metabolism that caffeine actually reduced the risk of liver damage. In other words, caffeine was actually good for the liver! As the researchers pointed out, several other studies had confirmed this same finding that "people at high risk for liver problems can reduce their risk by drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages." So, so much for that part of Gittleman's fat flush program.
That said, though, she does offer an interesting diet plan that probably will create weight loss--primarily because it is fairly low in calories for the first phase (the most stringent one) and because it is jam-packed with good foods, from the essential fatty acids (EFAs) in flaxseed to the two servings of fruits a day required. That plus you can eat unlimited amounts of most green vegetables, which will keep you feeling full and also give you lots of vitamins and minerals. She also restricts your daily protein intake to no more than 8 ouces a day, plust two eggs. This limit on the amount of protein guarantees that your body will not convert excess protein to sugar (through the process of gluconeogenesis, also called glycolysis) and thus undo your weight loss regimen of fat burning for fuel. She does emphasize that you must eat 2 eggs a day every day (which of course you must prepare without butter) and avoid ALL dairy products in order to lose weight. The 2 eggs a day reduce belly fat, she says, which may have more to do with that eggs are high in lecithin, which is a fat emulsifier and thus helps break down fat. So you may wish to take lecithin as a supplement in place of the eggs or to amplify their effects. And you drink a lot of water with unsweetened cranberry juice added, and you rule out nearly all diet foods and beverages in that you can only have Stevia as your sweetener. This actually is a good idea as there are concerns about aspartame (Nutra Sweet) and saccharin (Sweet 'n Low) from numerous studies, and some new studies alaso raise questions about sucralose (Splenda). Her plan is very detailed and seems to have a good basis in fact, except for here and there. There are oddities--like she says don't eat high starch vegetables, like potatoes and carrots, and then she has one carrot a day as a possibility for your vegetable selections. Also, she is a strong advocate of using conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) as a supplement, while Jonny Bowden in Living the Low-Carb Life: From Atkins to the Zone says there are concerns about CLA and don't use it. And Bowden cites new studies on flaxseeds as having an adverse effect on men's health by contributing to enlarged prostates, so Bowden encourages caution for men--but not women--in using flaxseed products. Even so, he gives Gittleman's diet a 5 star (highest) rating--so go figure. One other thing I find odd is that in the list of unlimited vegetables, Gittleman includes some that seldom make the list because they are high on the glycemic index and have quite a bit of sugar--such as tomatoes (actually a fruit) and okra. Overall, though, it appears that this diet could be a healthy one, especially for people who have lived on high amounts of sugar and processed carbohydrates. And definitely switching away from those products to more healthy and lower-calorie ones will aid weight loss, too. And because Gittleman's diet, while not actually saying so directly, is one that favors a low consumption of saturated fats, it may well find more favor with doctors and dieters concerned about saturated fats--even though the research strongly indicates that saturated fats are not the problem, but the consumption of saturated fats in conjunction with highly processed carbohydrates is. In other words, the average American diet of junk food and little else.

2-0 out of 5 stars Left me wanting more....
I needed either a lot more time or a personal chef to adhere to this diet. The recipes are tasty, but very labor intensive, and the demand for all fresh and often exotic veggies plus lots of fish, steak and chicken made this expensive. I did lose weight for the few days I was able to stay on the diet, but I was constantly hungry (and therefore grumpy) so my family made me stop the whole thing. I do like cranberry juice in my water, though.

5-0 out of 5 stars looking at it from another viewpoint
Many of the ideas in this book are good; getting off of coffee, regularly drinking an anti-oxident rich drink, etc. If it's too much for you to sustain, -do it when you can-. Unlike diets that don't focus on health, a week here and there will combine to improve your health along with a healthy weight loss. ... Read more

    Book Description

The Better Brain Book, by David Perlmutter, MD, FACN

Loss of memory and acuity is not a natural part of aging, and celebrated neurologist David Perlmutter, MD, FACN, shows readers how easy it is to regain and maintain clarity.

Most people can see the signs in their lives-they can't remember where they put their keys; they forget who they're calling mid-dial; shopping lists are the only things that give them an indication of why they've entered a store. However, these are not normal signs of aging. They are the symptoms of a distressed brain, one on its way to more serious conditions that can leave the individual unable to care for him- or herself later in life.

The Better Brain Book provides all the tools any reader will need for rejuvenating the mind, whether they've become forgetful and less able to focus at work, or are trying to help a loved one who has suffered a serious illness. This helpful guide helps you to:

    discover hidden brain toxins in your medicine cabinet, your household products, and the food you eat;
learn how to bring back clarity and mental vigor; and
find out what your doctor won't tell you about preventing and treating stroke, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, and other neurological conditions.

In addition, The Better Brain Book offers a unique three-tiered food and supplement program that helps heal damage and restore youthful sharpness and memory, as well as specific exercises for keeping the mind alert. (You'll never lose your keys again!) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Problem handled!
Thank you, Dr.Clark! This book should be the bible of every single medical professional and it should be required reading for every single med student. The medical community looks really barbaric when you see the results from the simple handling methods Dr. Clark outlines. For me, I've been plauged with a very serious chemical sensitivity for years; carpet odors, clothes detergents, soaps, paint smell, etc. I've also been experiencing a number of food allergies that made my sentivity worse when I'd eat those foods. A buddy of mine suggested that I do Dr. Clark's "liver flush". What came out of my liver was...well, unbelievable. Dozens of major sized green stones, hundreds and hundreds of small pea sized stones and lots of yellow mush. In the days that followed, the things that bothered me suddenly didn't bother me anymore. I've even been able to eat many of the foods again that heightened my sensitivities like potatoes and dairy. THANK YOU, Dr. Clark!! Problem handled!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will absolutely change your life!
I am a teacher from Indiana and have been "into" self-help for some 22 years, ie: homeopathic medicines, bio-feedback, better nutrition, etc. My father died of Lou Grehrig's Disease (ALS) and my seemingly "very healthy" sister died of cancer at 41, so this prompted me to look constantly for better information and up-to-date self-help ideas. Then 2 1/2 years ago a friend told me about Dr. Clark's ideas and about this book. It has dramatically changed my beliefs and my practices about staying healthy! I immediately built a "zapper" and yes, it sounded too "hokey" to be true. My first true test came the day I came home from school "coming down" with strep throat that was going around at school. My son had a varsity basketball game that night that I couldn't miss, so I "zapped" all the way to the game, 45 miles away. As I went into the gym I realized my symptoms were gone and I honestly felt good! I have not progressed into a cold, flu, or illness for 2 1/2 years since using the zapper. My husband has even become a believer (and he is the ultimate SKEPTIC!) I have also followed Clark's suggestions for removing the amalgam fillings from my teeth (both my father and my sister were completely "filled up" with silver amalgams and I was too!) It's taken me 2 years, and THANK GOD the dentist that Dr. Clark recommends, Dr. Jerome, lives in Columbus, IN, just 35 miles away! I can tell my health constantly improves as the fillings go! Also, Dr. Clark's explanations about parasites make very good sense. I've been keeping a log of the people in our community who have chronic illnesses or have died of cancer, and in practically every single case these people have pets INSIDE the home. It makes me want to share this incredible book with all of these unsuspecting families! Please buy this book to share with your family - it can save your life and theirs!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for everyone
As a diabetic , With only 1 week into beginning of the program, I can see a dramatic improvement with my sugar levels.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in total health.

I zapped and rifed and detoxed and it helped some I guess. But, is there a better way? Can stinking thinking get us sick in the first place? For healing of the soul first, check out "Deadly emotions" by Dr. Don Colbert and "A More Excellent Way" by Henry Wright. These books talk about biblical pronciples -- but don't let that scare you off. They work no matter hwat you believe.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tim's been busy
With all the positive reviews for this labarynth of lies I assume Hulda Clark's publicist, Tim Bolen has been sending in multiple reviews. It can't be real cancer patients sending in reviews, they all die of cancer.

If Hulda Clark is correct, then why not cure people of cancer in the US? Why not allow the system to be clinically trialled? If it's financial reward she seeks, proving her system works will lead to a nobel prize which has a $1,000,000. In fact she would likely win multiple nobel prizes.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A lifeline
I'll admit it -- I read this book through a crisis and a time of life that saw transitions everywhere. And while I'm still reeling from pain, and disbelief of the events that have happened to me in the past few years, I am already so much better from reading this book.

When I find myself tempted by defeating behaviors, reading one passage reminds me why I don't want to continue down that road any longer.

The funny thing is, I never saw myself as a codependent or as an addictive person. It doesn't matter what type of turmoil you're going through -- this book WILL remind you of a better way of life.

It truly is a lifeline. I keep a copy at work and am discovering I'll need one at home to. If you struggle with any type of negativity, this book can help remind you that it's really going to be okay.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Language of Letting Go
I have owned a copy of 'The Language of Letting Go' since its original publication in 1996 and am still finding it useful and pertinent to my daily living. I bought the book at a time when I needed some guidance and this book provided this and more. It has allowed me to understand that what I feel is both normal and natural and that I should not deny emotions and thoughts that inevitably surface.

I have suffered from post-viral depression, stress from studying, loneliness and yes, co-dependency. Melody Beattie, in this book has helped me to realise that I shouldn't try to push my fears and needy emotions aside. Rather I have come to realise I should just let the feelings go, and realise I can't control everything in my life.

I am still using the book, not everyday but when I feel I need to. Inevitably I find what I need in each daily meditation. This has always been a daily tonic to me.

Recently I lent my book to a good friend who is going through a very rough time - She was involved in a bad car accident she was told she should have died in. Since that time she has suffered from an eating disorder and has tried to push her closest friends and family away from her, afraid that she could hurt us with her pain. I know this book has helped her enormously, she told me so. Now I'm buying one for her. I think this is probably the best gift I could give her.

5-0 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with this book!
Written by the experts, it offers sound and invaluable advice on letting go and releasing yourself from co-dependency.

Melody Beattie's book "The Language Of Letting Go" is a tender caring work of art.

Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. (Healing Back Pain should not be used for self-diagnosis. Always consult a physician for chronic or acute back pain.) --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book transformed my life
I've always considered myself the most skeptical of skeptics, but Dr. Sarno has earned my lifelong gratitude. I've suffered from severe, chronic back pain ever since I was attacked by a combative mental patient when I working as an R.N. This book liberated me. Since I read it, I've been Advil and Tylenol free for over a month, I've returned to lifting anything I want, doing vigorous aerobics, jazz dancing, and most important of all, I'm able to sit when I work (I'm now a writer), when I'd been forced to stand and write for months now due to the pain. Yes, the book is a little like Tinkerbell. You have to believe for it to work. But Dr. Sarno's common sense theories had the ring of truth for me from the first time I read them. I realize now that my accident wasn't the "cause" of my pain, it was the "trigger" and that has made all the difference in my life. Give this book a try! It's been an answer to my most fervent prayers for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars FASCINATING THEORY, NOT MUCH INFO ON IMPLEMENTING
I found Dr. Sarno's theories regarding the epidemic of back pain to be incredibly innovative, yet making a lot of sense. I read the book after seeing Dr. Sarno's interview with broadcast journalist John Stossel (who related his own success after treatment by Dr. Sarno, to the skepticism of his MD brother, who was also on the show) and after I had tried every treatment available short of surgery for disc herniation (lumbar) and "severe disc degeneration" (cervical). I even had a morphine pump surgically implanted to deliver non-systemic morphine to my lumbar discs 24 hours per day, with minimal success, and still must take massive doses of oral pain meds and muscle relaxants to get through the day, so I was ready to try anything.... My complaint with this book is that very little information is given on implementing Dr. Sarno's theories. He articulates what he states is a new diagnosis for back pain: Tension Myositis Syndrome, or TMS, which is basically that back pain results from the brain subliminally causing the pain to distract patients from psychological distress; particularly convincing was his observation that thousands of people have herniated discs and other structural problems detectable by an MRI but never suffer any pain. His main treatment as set forth in the book, primarily from the experiences of his patients, seems to be to "talk to your brain" and let it know that you know what it is doing. I just can't get the hang of talking to my brain or any of the other exercises offered as successful by the patients quoted. When I called Dr. Sarno's office -- because his primary suggested method of treatment is to attend his lectures -- a message simply gave the names of doctors, none near me, who treat back pain using his methodology. I further left a NY area phone number, as he requested for those who live near the Big Apple, and indicated that I would travel to NYC for treatment, and there was never a response. Thus, I highly recommend the book for its theory of the cause of back pain, but do not read this book expecting to receive much information on the how-to of achieving cure through Dr. Sarno's methods. This left me hanging, and highly disappointed....Nonetheless, I would recommend that any sufferer of chronic back pain read the book for the theories, SOMEONE is bound to come out with a book which gives more information on implementing a cure for TMS. The book is certainly worth the purchase price for the glimmer of hope it provides.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Works and Should Be Required Reading
Several years ago I was off work for nine months because of what the doctors diagnosed as repetitive motion and then disc problems. AFTER major sugery, when they told me I'd be out of work and in excruciating pain the rest of my life, I found this book--it was next to one of those "how to live with excruciating pain" books.

Within two hours of starting to read Dr. Sarno's Healing Back Pain I could turn my neck. Within two weeks the pain was completely gone, and I've been a ball of fire since. I wish I could thank him in person. Buy this book, if you can, do it before you commit to major surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Back Pain by Sarno
This book links the mind and pain sensations to the gastrointestinal tract. There is an association between the pain signals and the gastrointestinal tract; however, the curative
result is in controlling inflammation. The author provides a good
analysis of peripheral nerve involvement in the management of
pain. Specific coping strategies are cited, as well as
testimonials in the form of numerous letters from satisfied
followers and adherents. The author cites Vitamin C in megadoses
as a preferred treatment option. He relates pain to specific
anger as an undercurrent which magnifies the pain sensations
in proportion to the degree of anger/resentment present.
The author describes the oxygen deprivation in muscles and
specific trigger points for pain. These ideas complement
existing knowledge in conventional medicine,as well as
    known oxygen therapies in Europe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still doing great after five years!
I like to check in every now and then with my progress and I have to say that since reading this book and implementing its suggestions in 1999, I have been free of back pain for five years. I NEVER take it for granted. I biked 35 miles just today without so much as a twinge. I had suffered with back pain for ten years after being attacked by a combative patient at work (I was a psych nurse) so it was pretty much a miracle to stumble on Dr. Sarno's book and his theories. I'm an incredibly practical person who tends to pooh-pooh a lot of holistic medicine, but these theories are based on common sense. If I ever feel even a twinge of discomfort, usually re-reading the Prologue is enough to make me better. Thank you, Dr. Sarno, for changing my life! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars These books taught a fat, tired old dog new tricks ...
What a bargain these are for someone who is serious about losing weight and getting healthier. I purchased them one at a time as they came out and I lost more than 50 lbs.

In my 60s, I had long ago given up hope of having a slim, trim figure. I had given up so much that my weight had moved up to well over 200 lbs. Then I discovered Fat Flush. It not only helped me lose weight but from the beginning I felt better, swollen ankles and lots of aches were gone. I've never been on an eating plan that has been so successful.

I've now been on it 20 months, and while there are times I get a craving or so, I'm not tired of it. I've really learned to appreciate the natural flavors of vegetables and simply cooked meats. I always loved fruit. And, if you want to get fancy, there are lots of ideas in the main book and the cookbook.

The journal is handy not only to record your eating habits and feelings, but it has a concise shopping list for all phase of the plan in the back. This is an easy size to carry with you.

I've been discussing the plan on line with others who have been on it since the beginning. It works for those who have a few pounds or lots to lose, and more importantly for many, changes destructive eating habits. The supplements and special foods (cranberry juice and flax oil) are readily available in most places in the States, and really seem to kick it the plan's benefits a notch.

5-0 out of 5 stars Go For It!
I treated myself to this book for Christmas knowing it's a bad time of year to take on weight loss. It's packed with useful, sometimes little-known, information that takes more than one read to grasp. Bottom line: it works beautifully, even in January. I suggest you read the book all the way through before starting the diet regimine, locate the health food stores and check them out for items you will need frequently, and go for it. I found that if I prepared my breakfast and lunch the night before and took them to work to reheat in the microwave, I stayed true to plan. Slightly undercook the egg dishes at home and the reheat process will finish them just right. The program is expensive to start, but tapers off once you accumulate some of the items. (I justify all of it easily because I know I have treated my car better than I have treated my liver!) If you don't have the spices on the shelf, buy the smallest bottle you can until you know you will use them again and again; not to mention the freshness factor. The supplements make a huge difference...I'm OFF ZOLOF! My doctor actually prescribed it for energy instead of good nutrition. Which brings me to my last comment: Imagine, a diet book written by a nutritionist...what a novel idea!

5-0 out of 5 stars Golly!!! It really works!!!
Tomorrow I begin Phase 3 of the program, and I must say that I am blown away at the results!!! I stumbled on this book while webshopping one day, and just decided, 'What the heck.' Within the first week, I felt what I can only describe as a 'light feeling' -- as if something that was clogging my body finally was released. By P1W2 (Phase 1 Week 2) I had lost at least 1 inch in my stomach -- my problem area. By P2W1 even my co-workers noticed the difference. Clothes that I could not button or zipper up a month prior were now fitting me. By the end of P2W1, the thick allergy-related dark circles under my eyes cleared up by 75%, and overall my allergies did not bother me anywhere near the extent they used to. I just want to add that I saw results, and have not even started a fitness training program yet... I will admit that I followed 95% of the program. I used small amounts of salt just for flavor where necessary, and have even eaten some things that are not FF (Fat Flush) approved. Yet I NEVER felt terrible or felt as if I wanted to give up on the program because I STILL got results that were so wonderful that I didn't want to stop. At first it is very hard to give up the carbs, and even now I have my cravings, but the good thing about this program is that I know that I can satisfy those cravings, but in a healthy way and I can enjoy the things that I like to eat, but without going overboard and without becoming addicted again to the carbs!!! I would recommend this book/program to anyone. It was surely a wonderful addition to my life!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars My Fat Flush Plan Success Story
I do not know where to begin other than to tell you that this plan has SAVED MY LIFE!!! It has taken an overweight, tired, sick, and unhealthy woman and provided her with the knowledge and tools that have helped to transform her into a healthy, happy, energized, lucious woman.... heavy emphasis on the "healthy" aspect.

I have had a weight issue since I was 12 or 13. Always turned to food for love, for comfort, for solice, for excitement, for passion, for.... you name it! And I've done every "diet" under the sun... including, but not limited to, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Nutri-System, Over-Eaters Anonymous, hypnosis, behavior modification, .... basically everything except jaw wiring (which I once checked into) and stomach stapling (which I also investigated).

Last fall, while watching a football game, I overheard the announcer referring to one of the players as "a big guy.... 6'2" amd 235 lbs".... well I was 236 and certainly NOT 6 feet tall... it was, as Oprah calls it, my "lightbulb" moment. I knew I had to change my life or I was going to die. I am the mother of a 15 year old boy who needs his mother in his life and I was not going to be around long if I continued living the way I was.

I started doing the Atkin's diet, and I liked the "low-carb" philosophy that he espoused, especially liked reading his "Age Defying Diet Revolution" book. But, overall the Atkin's diet left me feeling "heavy", constipated, kind of lathargic and overall felt basically unhealthy.

Then, after telling a friend about my concerns with Atkin's, she told me about FFP in late May. Just hearing her talk about it made so much sense that I immediately went out and bought the book, cookbook and journal. (I've never been one to keep a journal, but I just started journal number five a few weeks ago.) I had seen Ann Louise Gittleman not long before that on Dr. Phil talking about perimenopause, and her newest book called "Before the Change", and sat there taking notes a mile a minute. She just made so much sense..... but I didn't put 2 and 2 together and figure out that she was that woman on Dr. Phil until I did a search of her books at the local library when initially looking for the FFP, and when I saw "Before the Change" on the list of her books, everything clicked!!

Since the first week of June, I have lost approximately 65 lbs, and still have 36 more to go.

But, far beyond the weight loss issue is the fact that I have become a healthy person. I live a healthy and fit lifestyle. I am a role model for friends, family, coworkers, and even perfect strangers that I meet. I have joked that I am like a Fat Flush evangelist. I even bought 4 extra copies of the book and 2 extra cookbooks, and created my own little FFP lending library so that I can lend them out to others to get them started. I have numerous friends who are now Fat Flushing.... all of them with success.

Just as a side note.... I have purchased and read nearly ALL of her books. I especially liked "Eat Fat, Lose Weight". It all just made so much sense to me. I even bought "Super Nutrition for Men" for my husband to read. I have a little bookcase in my kitchen that I keep cookbooks and the like in, but I have one shelf devoted to my ALG books.

I am very appreciative for what the Fat Flush Plan has done for me, my life, my family, my spirit, my outward and inward beauty, but most of all, I am thankful for my increased good health and overall sense of well-being and the knowledge that I can succeed at anything I really want to do, if I have the right information and the proper tools..... as I said at the beginning of this letter... it has CHANGED MY LIFE!!

Thank you from the bottom of my bottom for everything this plan has done for me and all of the Fat Flushers around the world.

    Jamie Zayach
    Sandy, Utah

3-0 out of 5 stars Effective, but lots of detailed work!
I've been only able to implement a few things. And this is from someone who has lost 60 lbs in two years. I really do like the whole program. However, you need lots of time to figure it out, if not a personal assistant to set it up for you. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital Information
This book is loaded with the ancient wisdom explained with modern science, and should make complete sense to any rational human being. I recommend it to all who are seeking alternative healing. And I also recommend Alison Savitch's "Rawfully Good" video for people interested in how to prepare gourmet raw meals that are simple and delicious.

1-0 out of 5 stars If there is one major error, there are going to be more.
I am very disappointed with this book. A perfect example is this: Writing about honey they say that honey contains propolis, a compound in nectar that kills bacteria.

Absolutely not so! Propolis is resinous substance collected from the buds of certain trees by bees and used as a cement or sealant in the construction of their hives.

If they let just one unchecked or untrue fact go into the book, you have to be suspicious of the whole book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Go to your doctor!
I can't believe people can justify their stupidity with this stuff. I lost my mother because she insisted on treating herself "natually" I suggest you go to a real doctor and stop trying to save money or treat yourself with a bunch of "tips" from someone who's probably only piecing together information to profit from your ignorance.

1-0 out of 5 stars food remedies?
Oh Come on. I've been reading/following this religiously for the last 8 months and have NO relief for my ailments. And I don't mean serious like cancer, just the measurable things like allergies and joint pain. What's up? Ever hear of quack medicine?

5-0 out of 5 stars Just good food!
This book sticks to FOOD for healing. Now that herbs have come about to heal or not heal, it's better to not use herbs.. Food should be the prime healing for the body. If the proper food is eaten, we could all live to be 100! The baby boomers need a good nutritional book like this to keep us young. Thank you Prevention! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has helped me to recovery from a painful condition
_Approximately five years ago I had a complete set of x-rays performed by an orthopedic surgeon, and was diagnosised with arthritis, painful heel spurs, and severe plantar fasciatis. Since that time I have tried all of the arthritis prescriptions, and I could not tolerate the side effects. Many visits later to a chiropractor and a poditrist I was still unable to be mobile without severe pain. Water aerobics seem to keep me active, but did not correct the problems. I have spent hundreds of dollars on orthoditics and corrective shoes and no relief.

As I walked into the public library one day my eyes fell on this book sitting on the shelf next to the check out stand. I could not believe my eyes since it seems to have been written especially for me. This coincidence put me on my road to recovery. I have been doing the exercises about six months now, and I feel a hundred percent better. I now have a copy of this book in my personal library. I feel it is very important to read the complete book, and to keep it handy for reference and inspiration. I have a new lease on life due to the discovery of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Egoscue's book appears both effective and economical.
After two sessions with Egoscue's exercises, I've still spent less than $25, I can hold my head straighter, and my uneven gait from mis-aligned hips is much improved. Two sessions at the physical therapist would have cost $36 in hot-packs alone, never mind the cost of actual therapy. And I would have been treated for the hip or the shoulder, but probably not both.

Egoscue recommends reading the introductory chapters, then moving to the chapters specific to your needs. This advice works well with one possible exception: you may miss the story about the woman so misaligned that after 45 minutes in a relaxed, static back posture, she went into muscle spasm. This story indicates that it might be wise for people with considerable pain or strong mis-alignment to have someone with them during the first days or weeks of doing these exercises, to begin with the minimum times recommended for each exercise, and to expect to take longer to reach maintenance.

Egoscue might also have provided directions on how to get up after lying in some of these positions: I've found it helps to pull my legs in toward my torso, then turn onto my side before I try raising my head and upper body.

All in all, Egoscue's book appears very helpful. I now have high hopes for my own recovery from various chronic muscle ailments and recommend the book (I'm getting ready to have Amazon.com mail a copy to my sister right now).

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than yoga for 35 year old runner with hip pain
I was on the verge of giving up running 4 miles several times a week due to hip pain. Yoga did not fix the problem. The hip routine reduced the pain noticeably the first day, and by the second day I only noticed the pain upon waking, before doing the exercises. I am on the fifth day, even the morning pain is fading, and I am able to run. My stride when running seems to be more efficient and shock-absorbing, because of the increased motion in my hip. It's more comfortable. I have been told twice that I am looking healthier than usual, which I think is due to my posture improving. I am also tending to sit up straighter at my desk. I'll still do yoga for muscle tone and balance, but Egoscue is the best for flexibility, and the exercises are easier than most yoga postures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Michael L. Johnson
This is an excellent book! A true solution to chronic pain, not just hype and promises never kept. Egoscue is right on the money with his excercises. In my humble opinion, the exercises fire muscle spindle cells which are receptors in the muscles and joint mechano-receptors which are receptors in joints. Increasing the firing of receptors increases the firing of impulses to the brain. Increased impulses to brain equals less pain.

Dr. Michael L. Johnson author of "What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work--A Non-Drug Treatment of Dizziness, Migraine Headaches, Fibromyalgia, and Other Chronic Conditions".

5-0 out of 5 stars FOOT PAIN GONE!!???
For about a year I was suffering from extreme foot pain. My foot didn't always hurt, but standing in certain positions I was incapable of bearing weight, my ankle would hurt so excruciatingly I would fall to the ground in pain. But as a full time mom of two small children, the time necessary to go to some Doctor was time I didn't know how to find. So I tried the Egoscue method. WELL it was a miracle. After a week of doing the exercises less than diligently and reducing the times on everythign considerably, the foot pain is GONE. I am beyond amazed. I've even purposefully stepped in ways used to hurt excruciatingly to see if they still did hurt, nope!!! I plan on halfheartedly doing the maintenance exercises. Here's hoping my neck and shoulder pain can be eradicated too!!! ... Read more

    Book Description

Dr Steven Hotze is leading a wellness revolution that advances a new model of healthcare.Unlike the prevailing medical approach of treating individual symptoms with the familiar "anti" drugs - such as antibiotics, antihistamines, and antidepressants - Dr Hotze addresses the underlying causes of poor health.

Built around a regimen of biologically identical hormones and other natural treatments, Dr Hotze's model will help you obtain and maintain health and wellness naturally so that you can enjoy a better quality of life.In Hormones, Health, and Happiness you are shown how to reach and maintain optimal cell, tissue, and organ functioning so that you will feel at your peak physically, mentally, and emotionally. After your twenties, your hormone levels have already peaked and begun a slow, inexorable decline that may cause you to lose energy and gain weight. You may experience mood problems or have difficulty with thinking, concentration, and short-term memory.Your immune system is likely to become less efficient, leaving you vulnerable to infectious diseases.Dr Hotze reveals how you can restore hormones to their optimal levels using natural, biologically identical hormones in a safe, effective way that preserves vitality as you mature.

In his eight-point treatment program, Dr Hotze addresses the entirety of your wellness:airborne allergies, food allergies, yeast overgrowth, low thyroid function, natural hormone replacement, treatment of adrenal fatigue, nutritionally balanced eating, and vitamin and mineral supplementation. He reveals how most illnesses are due to poor dietary habits and nutrition, lack of exercise, allergic disorders that weaken the immune system and make it more prone to infection, yeast overgrowth due to overuse of antibiotics, an imbalance and decline in the body's production of thyroid and sex hormones, and stressed adrenal glands. All of these factors can be addressed safely, effectively, and naturally without drugs. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally!Someone hears me!
When I picked up Dr. Hotze's book, I had such a sense of relief. This book validates my suspicions and explains why I feel the way that I do.More importantly, it explains how I can fix it!For anyone suspecting hormonal issues, this is a fast and important read.

3-0 out of 5 stars There's more for people to know!
I too am on bio-identical hormone replacement and had to travel many hours to find a qualified doctor. I found Dr. Hotze's book very informative and was not too surprised to see the one sidedness of the teaching facilities, insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies! Bravo for bringing this out and detaching yourself from it!

I also feel that his move to Allergist is a bit latteral. He's still prescribing "anti" medicines. He does not cover APICH Syndrome nor other reasons for candiasis - such as heavy metals and toxins due to dentistry. These are huge adrenal stressors! I went to one of these "famous" allergy clinics and they laughed at me (that condescending behavior)when I told them I was pursuing biological dentistry to remove my mercury amalgam fillings. My Allergist told me I was wasting my money. My chelation therapy urine tests PROVED I was very toxic with mercury, tin, lead, and other toxins. I went to the cause of my chronic (systemic) candida, allergies, arthritis and CFS!

4-0 out of 5 stars Whole body wellness is a beautiful thing!
Our bodies are incredible instruments, and it makes so much sense to learn how our many intricate parts can work together to make us feel better. In easy-to-read language, Dr. Hotze explains the interaction of the different human hormones, and why the bioidentical hormones work better than synthetic ones.I switched from Synthroid to Armour Thyroid and began taking bioidentical progesterone which resulted in profound improvement for me in just a few days. Unlike my recent experience with so many traditional physicians, the book encouraged me to continue to trust what I know about my own body and to seek out doctors who will actually listen to me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Hormones, Health and Happiness
This is a marvelous book with usefull information, written in a clear and compassionate manner.Dr. Hotze translates his caring manner into the written word very well. This is a must read for women and men whose chronic symptoms are largely ignored by the conventional medical community.Be prepared to feel hopeful about the future and liberated to know that your symptoms are not "all in your head" and definitely not a drug deficiency.

5-0 out of 5 stars Male 55 years old
I am a male 55 years old. I considered myself to be in my prime time of my life, having over 40 years of experience in multitudes of professions. I found myself lacking in energy, beginning to forget things, having difficulty concentrating and of-course what males think of every 15 minutes, I lacked. When my allergies where in prime I had to cutting up a bed sheet, so I would always have something to blow my nose in.
Since starting the allergy and male hormone program of Dr. Hotze I have lost 15 pounds. I am back to my weight that I was in college. My allergies are down by at least 90 percent. I am competing with a job market with 20 and 30 year olds very effortlessly. I paid dearly to buy my truck and keep it maintained. Dr. Hotze's program was very reasonable when I look back and see what I paid for my toys. There are many choices to pick for our health. I feel fortunately that I picked a hollistic way to a better life.

    Book Description

Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book. Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book is certain to become the primary reference in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels.

Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection, location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be found in any Western textbook.

For each point there is a dedicated drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500 drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Best Point Atlas in English
Deadman and colleagues should be commended for this major contribution to the English-language literature of Chinese medicine. It does what it does exceedingly well. It does so, in part, because of what it is not.

It should be understood that the Manual is chiefly an atlas and desk reference of acupuncture points and channels, not a classroom textbook or a clinic handbook or a self-study guide per se, though it does list some illustrative combinations with each point. Other books are available that fill the role of textbook better than this one does. This one's audience is the person who already knows something of the foundations and clinical applications of acupuncture.

The manual is not encyclopedic when compared with the larger Chinese-language works of acupuncture, but it does draw on them in a concise and informative way that conveys the character, historic application and contemporary application of each point, using carefully selected information from a wide range of primary sources. Accordingly, it could be viewed more as a work of editorship than of creativity, and in a reference work of this sort, that is exactly what is desired.

It often goes unmentioned, but Deadman is zealous in his ongoing support of his publications. Errata and updates are available, for free, from his web site. The Manual is also available in CD-ROM format, and Deadman has even produced flashcards based on the substance of the Manual.

The illustrations are in fact of excellent quality, some of the best ever in a book of this sort. Pair the illustrations with the detailed treatment of point location and application, great typography, durable construction, and well-chosen excerpts from primary sources ranging from ancient to modern, and you have an acupuncture reference you can use to deepen your knowledge for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE Acupuncture Book!
The Manual of Acupuncture by Deadman is the ULTIMATE Acupuncture Book that is a necessity for every acupuncture student and practitioner. With 670 illustrated pages, this book is worth every penny. The newest version of this book is also tabbed by channels - so it is much easier to find information.

While I was a student, I didn't always carry this book with me because it was so big. However, I did photocopy the anatomical point charts and indications lists from the back of the book to aid my clinical point selections.

Now as a practitioner (this booked definitely helped me pass NCCAOM exams), I refer to this book often to take my acupoint knowledge to the next level and to provide more comprehensive treatment plans.

Buy this book now! If you are a TCM student, I also highly recommend the companion FLASH CARDS by Deadman. They make it easy to study acupuncture points with a location/illustration on one side of the card and actions/indications on the other.

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than Chinese Texts
This is the only text that I have on the subject of acupuncture. I am not a practitioner, but had hoped that this one (expensive) text would be sufficient to give me a total foundation in the discipline and would eventually allow me to use acupressure or some rudiments of the field in my own efforts to promote good health.

I was a little dissappointed that the introductory and foundational material was lacking in the book, and that there were no separate sections on diagnosis or expositions of the nature of pathogens. The book is essentially a description of each and every one of the 360 or so primary acupuncture points of Traditional Chinese Medicine. There is a good bit of material about methodology of point selection, but the real gem of this book is the intelligent and thorough descriptions of the points, their properties, and how to locate and needle them. The reason that I gave the book five stars is that it is far more complete and logical in its point descriptions than any of the Chinese texts used by my acupuncturist, a Chinese chiropractor who was a medical doctor Shanghai for eight years before coming to the US and becoming a chiropractor. Often when a discipline is translated from one language and culture to another, the highly systematized translation is more complete and sensible than the eclectic literature corpus upon which it is based. Those who devised this book have created a phenomenally comprehensive synthesis of over 3,000 years of Chinese medical tradition. They have taken on a monumental task and succeeded brilliantly. The quality of this reference is so high that I would even recommend it to practitioners from the orient who are coming to the US or other English-speaking countries to start a practice. First, it will it help them learn the English vocabulary of acupuncture jargon and help them understand our butchered pronunciations of the many Chinese words in an English acupuncturist's vocabulary. Second, they will be able to better communicate their activities to their patients. Finally, the book is as high a quality reference as anything they will have brought with them from Asia.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great pictures, other info. questionable
The pictures in this book are excellent, and can be used by anybody learning point location. As far as the description of point location, they differ from the source used for the california state board exam, which only matters if you are planning on taking it. There are also some helpful tips for locating certain points. The info. on point functions and indications is tremendous. Everything and anything is in this book. Some really obscure stuff, which is great to read and think about. But that does not mean that these points are really used for this, or that you will be able to make the point do that. All in all great for location, but use some scrutuiny when apllying functions and indications.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Greatest Published Work to Date
Unquestionably, when you get your hands on a copy of this book, you will agree with me that this may be greatest reference compendium ever published on acupuncture in the English language, to date. The quality of printing and binding is superb, to match its outstanding content.

This book is priceless. Sell all your other acupuncture reference books if you have to (e.g., CAM, FCA, etc., unless you are still a student), and keep this impressive book on the shelf and within reach. While it is not "officially" adopted as a standard text in U.S. schools, it would be an outrage if this book does not become one in the near future. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars BIZARRE book!
Ok, in the beginning of the book there's some picture of a idol looking guy with cartoon angles flying around him - each with a word on it - one saying "Heavenly Father" on top. FREAKY! Next, there's a quote from Jesus from "Essene Gospel Of Peace"? Waaay too cultish or off-shoot religion sounding to me (one of the chapters is titled Spiritual Fasting).

And the guy who wrote the book calls himself "Sproutman". I haven't found a shred of proof to back up any of his claims nor any studies or detailed explanations. Let me quote the book on page 18: "Basically, there are two lengths of fasts, short and long". Doesn't seem to be much detail to the book.

Next, the whole section about how colonics and enimas can be FUN. No... I'm not kidding! The whole section "Try it, You'll Like It!" isn't enough to convince me but, even better, there's even a section on "Exotic Enimas". Plus, there's a lot of research out there that says it's not good for you. Even Stanley Burroughs agrees in his book "The Master Cleanser" and says if you want to clean yourself out, drink water with ocean salt instead.

The only thing I saw redeeming in this weird book with angels all over it was a section in the back called "HOW TO BUY A JUICER" that's 9 pages long. Sorry to say... wouldn't recommend it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book, covers the topics very well
I'm new to fasting, and this book answered virtually all of my questions. He covers the aspects I am interested in - from the motivation to fast, how long to fast, water and juice fasting, a section I really enjoyed on detoxification, the psychology of fasting, and how to come off the fast. As an extra bonus, the book also discusses how to buy a juicing machine (I didn't know there are four different types!) and concludes with several pages of additional resources, including web sites and other organizations that can provide additional information. The text is well written, easy to follow, and I found it a joy to read.

There is a lot more to fasting than just not eating. This book gives me the ideas and means to do an effective fast, and for that I am very grateful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and concise how to for fasting.........
This is an easy to read book on how to fast for your health: mind, body, and spirit. The author does not try to convience you that this is the ultimate in health but educates you on the benefits of fasting, why it should be practiced, and how to go about it.

The book touches on the different types of fasting, the duration of fasting, how to start, and importantly how to come off of a fast.

There are several different kinds of fasting but what suprised me was the benefits of fasting during short periods of time: 24 to 36 hours. I had several misconceptions of fasting: that it was a long period of complete deprevation, I was wrong. The book outlines the benefits of short term and long term fasting and the effects of detoxifying the body with fasting.

Other topics discussed is fasting for weightloss and the nutritional balance of certain juices during fasting.

If you are new to the fasting concept and practice this is a great book to start.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Particulars of Fasting
This book is both informative, and an easy, pleasant read. In sharp contrast to several other books I've read, Meyerowitz doesn't force feed raw food diets or fasting down your throat with threats of disease and disaster. His approach is simple, direct and well-organized. The book begins with a discussion of what fasting is and why it can be beneficial and continues on to descriptions of how to begin, how long to continue and how to come off a fast. Other important sections include a systematic description of how the body detoxifies, what to expect as this occurs and what can be done to help the body during the cleansing process. All in all I found this to be a well-balanced and informative book that I would wholeheartedly recommend to anyone who is new to the concept of water or juice fasting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must-read for juice fasters
This book was a great intro in to juice fasting. It was very informative and easy to read. The author has a real passion for juice fasting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success"---- " revisited"
Knowing how to be spiritual is going to be our quest, for our future understanding depends on it. It's going back to our roots so to speak...from where we came...remember? If "Healing Society" by Dr Seung Heun Lee requests a spiritual awakening to accomplish our goal of "playing well together" to accomplish our higher purpose of peace on earth... who better than a wise and compassionate teacher, we know as Deepak Chopra, to tell and show us how to be this? Deepak generously leads us to a beautiful place where all we have to do is "be." Spirit is what we are... and love is who we are... and where we come from and then return to. What more can we desire? Maybe to revisit that perfect state from which we came, perhaps? Maybe everything is possible and simple. Maybe we should return to our innocence. In innocence we are fearless in our thoughts and actions...totally in tune with our inner self. Let's be beautiful together...in spirit shared from our hearts where God lives. Read or reread "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of your Dreams and Deepak will give you the gift of your inner you...your "self"...dare to be beautiful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and very fulfilling. A must read!
I have been going through a major turning point in my life and this book has allowed me to deal with my life's challenge in a very self fulfilling way. This is a must read for anyone wishing to find true inner peace and happiness. I wish I found this book 20 years ago! Read it every day and make it a fundamental part of your life. Self fulfillment will come when you practice the "Seven Spiritual Laws of Succcess". This book truly illuminates the heart, soul and mind

5-0 out of 5 stars "This existence of ours is as transient as autumn clouds."
It is always nice to find someone out there that thinks the same way you do, however express it much better.

In "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success", by Deepak Chopra, he describes the fundamental principles of the universe and how we as part of the universe can be successful. Throughout the book he has to slow sown and explain how he is using many of the words as we usually give them different meaning. Then there are a few times that he has to turn to Indian words instead of making up new ones. Many say he is based in Ancient Vedic concepts yet if you did not know of them you would relies these are concepts of the now.

He hits the deck running with this book so if you have not been exposed to these concepts before you may need to re-read the book several times. And this book was not meant to jus be read you need to practice the concepts to understand them. This book is based on "Creating Affluence" and does not have the size to contain a lot of background reasoning for drawing conclusions. Your practice off the laws will do that for you.

The concepts are too simple to give the titles any meaning however here they are.
    1. The Law of Pure
The source of all creation is pure consciousness...
    2. The Law of Giving
The universe operates through dynamic exchange...
    3. The Law of "Karma" or Cause and Effect
Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind...
    4. The Law of Least Effort
Nature's intelligence functions with effortless ease...

    5. The Law of Intention and Desire
Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment...
    6. The law of Detachment
In detachment lies the wisdom of uncertainty...
    7. The law of "Dharma" or Purpose in life
Everyone has a purpose in life...

On a personal note it is so eerie that many of the things he talks about especially in the seventh law was the way me ad my siblings were raised. However I was 20 years old before cutting throw my first Veda

Be sure to also listen to the audio to here how he emphasizes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applying these laws has helped many...
    ...myself included.

I first read this book about 4 or 5 years ago when I began my journey towards discovering my Higher Self. This book is a great read no matter what religion (if any) you belong to. Honestly, the fundamental laws that lead to success in the game of life along all lines--health, wealth, peace of mind, love/relationships and true expression--are very simple but few of us are lucky to happen upon them. Then, for those who do, applying these laws consistently is something that even fewer of us do.

My favorite nugget of wisdom from this book is the follow:
"That which doesn't multiply through giving is neither worth giving nor receiving." (pg. 30)

I try to keep this insightful idea in mind when I consider not only finanacial and material concerns but my relationships and interactions with people as well.

I have read 3 of the author's books and this one is thus far my favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Laws Made simple
Chopra has manage once again to bring a lot of Eastern Philosophy to the west with a certain simplicity. He makes it easier to follow these principles in our everyday lives.Spirituality is everyday living and This book allows us to practice that!

I was skeptical about this book at first (it was a gift), but I found it to be a real treasure. I read it in shorts gulps at night after my now-7-month old drifted off to sleep. It's a beautiful and heartwarming--and very real--emotional tribute to motherhood. I just finished reading another heartwarming--but also very funny--love letter about parenting, "I Sleep At Red Lights: A True Story of Life After Triplets," by Bruce Stockler, which you might also enjoy

5-0 out of 5 stars Simple, Convenient, & Elegant
As a recent member of weight watchers, and a long-time cooking fanatic, I find that this book satisfies not only both sides [the healthy and the adventurous] but also saves time. The book's design is all about speed and convenience. the recipes are easy to read and follow, and each section is neatly organized to help you find the recipe you want quickly. Although each recipe does not have its own photo, there are many, many sumptuous photos throughout the book that represent the global culture [from Mexico to Italy to Thailand]. Other nice features include the points and nutritional breakdown on the bottom of every page, serving suggestions, and plenty of white space on every page so you can add your own notes or personal flair. It is definitely the type of book that will easily become a cooking reference for anyone who wants to eat healthy with precious time to spend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love This Cookbook!!
Make It In Minutes is a wonderful cookbook for those of us who don't have a lot of time to spend in the kitchen! Even if you do not follow the Weight Watchers meal point plan, you will find the recipes easy to follow and very healthful. The book is organized into 15,20 and 30 minute sections with easy to follow instructions and full nutritional content for each recipe. My favorites so far are the Oriental Pepper Steak, Sweet and Sour Shrimp, Honey Pecan Chicken (super fast and EASY!!) and the Greek Chicken Pasta Toss. Even my picky eater 6 year old loves it! I highly recommend this book!!

5-0 out of 5 stars fabulous
Quick, yummy and tasty. I'm not following the WW program, but this cookbook is great. It's well-organized, and every recipe is very accessible. Lots of ethnic-inspired dishes, lots of soups and sandwiches, and some really nice recipes you can make for company.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy - and easy!
This is a great cookbook! All the recipes we have tried have been delicious. They are also slightly unusual - none of the standard, boring "diet" dishes which discourage people from the very idea of "going on a diet". (Not that you'll feel as though you're dieting when you try these dishes.) As the title implies, the recipes in "Make it in Minutes" can also be whipped up very quickly. The menu suggestions are also helpful. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic cookbook!
I've never cooked in my life (a bachelor). Much to the surprise of recent guests, I prepared several meals from "Make it in Minutes." Not only were my family and friends shocked that I could cook at all, they were even more surprised that these outstanding and tasty recipes were from a Weight Watchers cookbook! This book has made a cook out of someone who couldn't even boil water in the past. MY ETERNAL THANKS TO WEIGHT WATCHERS! Now I can have people for dinner without ordering out, and I have the confidence to try other cookbooks! AND: it's healthy too. What more could you ask for? By the way, I don't have a weight problem (180, 6 foot), I tried this book on the recommendation of someone who was on the program, and because the dishes tasted fantastic and were easy to make... ...
