    4-0 out of 5 stars Self-help without the hype...it makes sense to me!
    As a lawyer, I am very skeptical of wild claims. Dr. Bob has done a good job explaining the significance of new research in the field, providing balanced advice concerning the advantages and disadvantages of various dietary strategies, and creating the framework for a lifelong cancer prevention program. At times, he misstates the exact findings or methodologies of certain studies, but in general the punch line is correct. Carbohydrate selection is only part of the prescription, but for anyone who has considered a carbohydrate restriction diet (Sugar Busters, Zone, Protein Power, Atkins, etc., or McDougall Maximum Weight Loss) but held back because weight loss or heart health was not enough reason to switch, here is yet another voice in support of glucose control as a crucial determinant of health. The book's most glaring omission, as others have mentioned, is the absence of recipes in the menu plans; also, some of the glycemic index tables appear to be redundant and/or contradictory. Overall, I recommend this book highly.

    On the eve of my Mother's 3rd anniversary of dying from Breast Cancer, I decided to read this book and try to make sense of it all. I have watched 2 great Aunts, 1 Aunt and my Mother die from this disease, and often wonder when it is my turn. Instead of waiting for it to happen, I bought the book, (and one for my sister also). Finally, someone trying to lower the risk before it happens. I liked the way he explained the risk factors we here of so often, and the way they are related to diet (which nobody ever really has explained yet). The only thing I didn't like about the book, was that there are no recipes to follow. In reading reviews on his other book, about losing weight, people said the same thing. DIDN'T HE LEARN FROM THE FIRST BOOK!!! To follow a mediterrian or asian diet, people need recipes. I couldn't put the book down, but think he should follow up with a cookbook.

    First, every woman I care about, my friends, sisters, mom, etc., will be getting a copy of this book as their next gift from me! Dr. Arnot gives example after example of medical research PLUS lifestyles of women all over the world showing better health than most Americans, revealing what scientists believe attribute to it! Unless every word and Doctor, or school referenced are all liars, this book is a LIFESAVE. Scientist have come a long way. They don't just say "don't eat this, but eat that" and you'll be fine. That's too simple. They know much more than that now and we need to take advantage of that. If they say breakfast is important, always eat SOMETHING, than that's what we should do! If you want a fiction book, or an easy fix, or if you want to ramble about how research in mice has little to do with humans, than keep fooling yourself. I'll take all the help a reputable doctor or scientist or medical college wants to give to prolong my life AND give me GOOD HEALTH at the same time. Many of us ae having our children late in life. My youngest was born when I was 38. I've got to live a long time to be there for her. My mother had me at 18! She's 70 now and I love having her around. I trust there is nothing in Dr. Bob's book that will hurt me -- but that will only help me. Should I still go to the doctor? OF COURSE!!! I have been getting yearly mamograms for 15 years, and only this year did I have a a small spot. I'm to get another exam in May 2002. I'm worried. They think it's nothing and say MOST OF THEM ARE BENIGN. What if i'm one of those woman not so lucky? I am not sure about Soy Isoflavones (the dosage) although Dr. Bob talks about it.     3-0 out of 5 stars Not till I find out more about Lillian Thompson!
    I was all set to get this book, really...Till it came to my attention that I alreasy HAVE a book that cites Lillian Thompson's research at The Univerity of Toronto with flax seeds on breast cancer in mice (or rats, whichever-- except that its NOT whichever, it's bloody mice! and they don't always get the same results in both!) and it says that she is going one step further and, in a pilot study, is giving flaxseeds to women recently diagnosed with the disease. Now there is a review right here written in December, 1998, about the hardcover edition of this book that says that Dr. Arnot failed to make clear that the results Lillian Thompson obtained were for mice. The book I bought was published in hardcover in 1998 and in paperback in 1999, and I just got it in 2000. So I though maybe since then Lillian Thompson had published something in which she had given flaxseeds to human subjects diagnosed with breast cancer. Since the government has granted free poblic access to Medline, I looked up her reasearh on it. She hasn't done recent research on any human subjects unless you count one experiment done a few years ago in which she gave various doses of of raw flaxseeds and processed (as in cooked: in bread and muffins) flaxseeds to healthy human subjects to see if what (no I don't know what--but it was what it was supposed to be) was excreted would be excreted in a dose dependant manner and if it would be affected by processing ( raw vs. processed): it was excreted in a dose dependant manner and this was regardless of whether the flaxseeds were raw or processed in muffins and bread. But on Medline I could find no experiments of hers on human subjects with breast cancer going back as far as 1993. It's not that her experiments on mice aren't encouraging , but one wonders what happened to the human subjects that were recently diagnosed with breast cancer who were going to get the flax seeds. It may not even be that she hasn't done that and published it too--it's just that as of now, if she has, I can't find it on Medline and I can find this other stuff of hers. I don't intend to stop using flaxseeds, but I'm also not getting this book yet. Also to be consdered, possibly, that I do not know about: another reveiewer said that some of the scientists whose work was cited in the book have disassociated themselves from it. One might want to know why. I do think that diet and some cancers are related and that it is worth one's while to find out what one can and try to reduce one's risk. However, I ,too, live on a budget, I have other needs too, and i'm not ready for this book yet.

    I remember watching Dr. Bob on the Oprah show and I was hopeful because my diet and exercise routine (in addition to the suppliments I take) closely matched his anti-breast cancer book. I managed stress. I wasn't in a high-risk group.

    No big speech here,but after years of failure I have lost 40 pounds in six months and found energy and vitality I thought were gone. I'm 44 and feel about 30 or so now, and just as the book said, I actually enjoy and look forward to my workouts. I think the biggest benefit is the way foods work, and the effect they have on the body is explained, that makes this book different.It destroyes alot of myths that are making you diet in vain. This is no miracle cure nor is it an overnight

    solution. In fact, the first two months were pretty tough, but after that everything just started to fall in place, including the compliments from my wife and co-workers. So go ahead, spend two months on the rest of your life, you won't be sorry.

    Despite its claim, this book is NOT for men only. Its advice on food will change your eating habits for life and lose a lifetime of unwanted weight, regardless of your gender or age. If you close it without ever reading the exercise section you still will have experienced significant insights on diet's impact on the body. Follow its advice and you truly will feel younger--and look it, too.

    Dr. Bob's "Guide to Turning Back the Clock" is 100 percent accurate and a good motivational tool for both men and women. I had no idea that enriched flour ... is so bad for your body. He has some very good ideas on how to eat and "fuel" your body. I especially liked the sections on roller blading and cross country skiing. This is the "one" diet/fitness book to have at your side. Cousin Arnold is right: "Be the best you've ever been. Now is the time and this is the book!"

    5-0 out of 5 stars THIS IS A REVOLUTIONARY EATING PROGRAM
    There are no menus or recipes but the basic philosphy is easy to follow. No white sugar, white flour, or high fructose corn syrup. Whole grains, lean protein, lots of fiber through fruits and veggies make up the bulk of the foods you eat. Yes carbs are OK as long as they are slow load complex carbs. I have lost over 80 pounds since April (5 months). I don't use the word diet because it doesn't feel like one. I feel full all the time. People are amazed at what I am able to eat. Cravings have disappeared. Just find foods that you like from the lists and eat them at the right times and in the right combinations. I am the cook in our family and it started with me making two seperate meals each night but gradually everyone's diet started changing and now we are all eating much more healthily. Regulating your blood sugar and insulin levels through the food you eat is the key. I feel better than I have in my adult life and added regular moderate exercise after about a month of eating this way. This book is a life changer and saver. My cholesteral plummeted to normal, healthy levels after about four months. Buy this book and change your life TODAY. Thank you Dr. Bob Arnot!!

    Finally, there is a book that explains weight management in Layman's terms! I have lost 19 pounds on Dr. Bob's weight control plan. I feel wonderful! The book is well written and well organized. He explains how to lose weight and control your appetite by explaining how gluclose levels work in the body. I found it very easy to follow because this is a plan for better living--not a fad diet. I have recommended this book to all of my friends. Many have tried it and turned their lives around, too. I think this book would be of great interest to everyone--whether you need to lose 10 pounds or much, much more!

    I found this book to be extremely helpful. Dr. Arnot clearly explains the pitfalls of fad dieting. This book was well written and well thought out. On a personal level, the plan worked for me because I enjoy the foods he that are part of the plan. If you do not like beans, vegetables and grains you will struggle with his philosophy. That being said, I highly recommend this book, merely for the chapters on glucose load and the glucose epidemic.

    Another diet book that claims to be revolutionary...it even has the word in the title! The above title is my summary of Dr. Arnot's secret recipe for being hard and lean.

    Good: Food can be used for its "drug" effects, eat fiber message, stay active message

    Bad: Poor editing, on one table Cheerios are a GI of 22 and on another at 72. Uses himself as an example...he is not your average overweight American trying to lost weight!

    Overall: I think he is on to something, but unfortunately, unrealistic for most of us who are not into the squirrel lifestyle to follow.

    Dr. Bob could not make it any simpler: Fiber, Protein = Good, Fat, Sugar, Starch = Bad. Sure you already "know" this, but the book explains the reasons WHY, fully. You cannot read this book and think the same way about what you are eating again. There are no 'gimmicks', 'meal plans', etc., Dr. Bob just explains how the human machine processes what goes into it. I eat no less than what I used to, in fact I eat a lot, only different foods. I dropped from 225lbs to 195lbs in 2 months, and to 175lbs where I belong in the 2 years since, just by changing what, not how much, I eat.     4-0 out of 5 stars "Wonderful--inspiring and very readable"
    As I read this book I thought to myself, how wonderful to read a book, authored by an M.D., which is actually written in English (as opposed to doctorish). This book is written in such a way that anyone can read it. Most of the information is basic information, but the picture the author portrays seems like a medical marvel. There are so many ways that we can improve our lives, and move closer to success, that Dr. Arnot barely scratches the surface. The chapters on exercize and moving beyond our comfort zones motivated me the most. Dr. Arnot abolished the age old myth that we should not over-train, but rather push ourselves to new levels if we want to improve. That is something I have long agreed with. This book is not chock-full of new information, if that is what you are looking for. Rather, this book is one of many of the well written volumes of success available. I highly recommend it.

    An excellent book to help individuals understand and maximize their energy levels. This is not another health book! It's a simple and thorough plan to get the most of your day and your life.     This is a book which tells you what to do to create a conducive environment for success.

    Includes tips like : eat a high protein meal for breakfast and lunch to increase alertness and consequently effectiveness.

    Listen to music from Schumann and Mozart to create the smooth rhythm in your mind. According to the author, we all need these melody to create the kind of brain waves for success.

    Other notable areas includes being optimistic, living at the moment...etc..

    There is not much breakthrough research here, its more about a compilation and summary of key areas of our lives. For me, the author has given a fantastic summary of all these areas.

    Try it, and you will not regret it.

    After reading a review of this book in a magazine, I bought it expecting information I could use in my daily life. Instead, the book runs the gamut from the obvious (music affects your mood) to the insulting (if you ever feel stuck or in a rut, just go helicopter skiing in the Canadian Rockies!!). Uh, gee, thanks Bob. Next time I have a year's salary to blow on a vacation I'll be able to take you up on that. Most of Dr. Bob's advice will be useful only to those with six-figure-plus salaries and lots of control over how they spend their time.     I like Dr. Arnot's take on exercise and his caution of the use of drugs. The benefit of exercise is counterproductive if you push yourself to knee and hip replacement surgery. For me, Yoga has proven to be the best answer.

    5-0 out of 5 stars If you're over 30 - BUY THIS BOOK!
    "Wear and Tear" is a gem that should be on the best seller list. This book has been a real eye-opener for me and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to help slow the damage we heap on our bodies as we age. But to be honest I've been a Dr. Arnot fan since he wrote "Guide to Turning Back the Clock", another excellent book (that needs to be updated).

    I bought and started reading "Wear and Tear" because he included a chapter called "Stiff Man Syndrome" which my orthopedic surgeon jokingly said contributed to my knee damage. In "Wear and Tear" there are excellent descriptions and examples of the damage you do to your joints, far beyond what my doctor told me. The "8-Ball" metaphore of a joint alone made me see what 'full range of motion' is all about. Dr. Arnot's discussion of "forceful walking" has given me better tips than my physical therapist has on how I was ginding away my joints by walking (like Godzilla in a hurry). One suggestion I would add, in addition of the examples given in the book, is imagine you're walking on rice paper. Remember "Grasshopper" from TV's "Kung-fu"? Now I notice how everyone else is pounding away as they walk, while I glide along feeling sorry for them.

    Because of "Wear and Tear" I'm in the pool working on range of motion (it feels great too, all day long), practicing walking so I don't pound my joints, doing light yoga and stretching (it is remarkably easy to get flexibility back), changed my vitamins and doing the remarkably good (and unique) exercises he illustrates.

    The Amazon Editorial Review gives you a good list of subjects in the book so I won't repeat them. I would just add they are covered in a clear and concise style. You don't waste any time reading the filler found in most other health books.

    If you compare what you can get out of this book to what you will spend on expensive Doctor and Physical Rehab sessions, not to mention the pain and loss of income, "Wear and Tear" is worth its weight in gold. I think Dr. Arnot has also saved me from a lot of future grief as well by cluing me in before more damage is done to my poor knees and hips. I plan on using many of the principles outlined in this book for the rest of my life.

    This book is great for people who suffer from Arthritis, who are overweight, have reducecd flexibilty, or any other pain associated with their joints. Bob Arnot, one of the authors of this book believes strongly in yoga and stretching as exercises for people suffering with pain. In his practice, he does prescribe asprin and NSAIDS, but disourages the overuse of them. He believes more in exercise. Not strenuous exercise, just exercises like bicycling, walking, or swimming. Exercise is the key to strong muscles and joints. He also gives ideas for proper footwear, no high arched shoes. The book is jumpy as you read it, but overall, it would be of good use to those who suffer with joint pain. ... Read more

    This book provides specific information on how to preserve
    the joints in the body. For instance, the author cautions
    against heal pounding while walking. He recommends walking
    such that the outer perimeter of the foot absorbs your
    weight. He describes the optimal gait which consists of
    maintaining hips at a level position and landing the feet
    easily while walking. High tech knee braces may help in
    redistributing the load around the knee. Ibuprofen may be
    helpful in dealing with inflammation problems. Wearing
    comfortable shoes is cited as an important step in reducing
    stress on the joints. Yoga is cited as a good treatment
    for joints , as is stretching, spreading the weight load

    I am a family nurse practitioner. I found the book to be very clear and comprehensive. If you're male and over 40, this is required reading!

    4-0 out of 5 stars Great on nutrition but biased & simplistic re: surgery
    This book is entertainingly and enthusiastically written and gives excellent information on how to eat to avoid prostate cancer or counteract prostate cancer--help slow or stop its growth--once you have it. I was apalled, however, at how Arnot started his chapter on "surgery," describing two groups of couples in which the men had prostate cancer. The one, happy giggling group was composed of couples where the decision was to "watch and wait" regarding the prostate cancer--in other words, not have radiation or surgery for the present. In the other group, the men had had surgery within the previous year and "These men appeared morose, even depressed. Many complained of the need to wear diapers. Months after the operation, many no longer had any sex life at all."

    This picture is biased, black-and-white, unrealistic and I beleive cruel to people who are trying to decide what to do about prostate cancer. Surgery IS the gold standard treatment for younger men with cancer detected early--men who might die prematurely and very painfully if they did not have surgery, which has a better than 90 percent chance of curing them. And certainly men like Bob Dole, General Schwarzkopf and thousands of others who had surgery are not morose and feeling as if their lives are over--in fact they probably feel a lot better than the 30 percent of those who watch and wait and after ten years have cancer spreading throughout their bodies.

    People have to make their choices as best they can, and both watchful waiting and surgery can be appropriate. Arnot's description painting surgery as totally black was neither good journalism nor good medicine, and as the wife of a 59-year-old-man who will probably have surgery, I did not appreciate the depiction. Less than 8 percent (some say 2 pwercent) of men wear diapers after recovery from surgery and all who have surgery are certainly NOT MOROSE compare to all who wait being giddy and happy. For the fifty to thirty percent who cannot have natural erections, there are several good alternatives that will make the penis errect--and the nerves that cost erections DO NOT hinder sensation or orgasm in anyone--men may not get errect but they can feel and have orgasms! Many people take the lemons of this experience and the surgery and make lemonade, glad to be alive and have a chance at a cure. Making a blanket and untrue statement that suggest surgery leads to moroseness is neither helpful, accurate or true. The next edition of this otherwise very good book should correct that.

    This book could very easily save your life. While it reaffirmed things I know about fiber, insulin, and exercise, it gave me a lot of new information about how to keep from getting prostate cancer (like my father had), and other important information. It also described "insulin resistance", which is something that I have and has baffeled my doctor for well over a year! Dr. Bob, thanks for writing this great book.

    This is a serious step in the right direction to minimize the possibility of developing Prostate Cancer. Many volumes have been written on dealing with the disease after detection but nothing notable of taking preventive measures. This should be must reading for every man!

    With an older male relative stricken with prostate cancer and with 3 brother-in-laws in their 40's the timeliness of this book really struck a chord with me.

    I was impressed by the depth of information and also the author's insistence that if we lead healthier lives concentrating on nutrition - well, we would lead healthier lives. I was also very impressed that some of the information and advice he gives on food and nutrition would also have an effect on breast cancer, as well as other types of cancer. My mother died of pancreatic cancer when she was just a little older than I am today. My plan is to live a long, healthy life. I plan to take some of Dr. Arnot's advice to heart. His writing is clear, concise and again, very timely for all of us. ... Read more
