4-0 out of 5 stars One of the better texts I had while in college
An all-around good book for an intro to organic chemistry. Good example problems, plenty of end-of-chapter questions and concise explanations of critical concepts. Lays an excellent foundation of molecular theory as it pertains to Organic Chemistry in the first few chapters. End of chapter review (very thorough) gives tables of important reactions, their respective reagents/catalysts, and in some cases real-world applications (very helpful). Of course, I had excellent teachers for these courses, so I am a bit biased in favor of this book. But, organic chemistry is inherently not an extremely difficult subject to understand; mostly memorization. I found the graphics somewhat boring, though, and felt they could have aided in understanding concepts, as might be the case with students who stuggle with this subject; maybe the newer editions are better; I haven't seen them.

5-0 out of 5 stars Much better than any other used
I have used this book in replacement of my organic chemistry class book. It's much more clear and easy to learn. However, it would be nice if the book and answer book was not so expensive but it's worth to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative, easy to understand
I read this book for my first organic chemistry course.I found it very helpful and i still refere to it at times.I specially find the chapeter about SN1 and SN2 reactions very useful because i tried couple of the other books before reading this one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done!!
Kudos to Professor Carey on a job well done! I have used the text for a semester and must say that it is a clear, well-written book. Difficult concepts are simplified; this text is definitely a must-read!

5-0 out of 5 stars An all-comprehensive text on basic organic chemistry
I personally bought the book at a used book store for a couple bucks and must admit this is one of the best textbooks I have ever had. I have been teaching organic chemistry to myself by use of this book, and it's clear explanations, excellent figures and tables, and pleasing appearance combine to create this textbook a 'must' for students in organic chemistry. Certainly even a new book would be worth the typically high cost of textbooks ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! Something that works!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been on the diet 11 days and lost 9lbs. This is a huge accomplishment for me! I have been trying to lose 25lbs for 7-8 yrs. I've eaten low fat, exercised for hours and deprived myself. NONE of these things worked for me. Dr. Atkins diet feels like it was designed for me. I was raised on rice and potato side dishes. Now I know this is why I always battled with my weight. I check my ketosis status everyday and there isn't a better feeling than seeing that stick turn purple! The first 2 days were torture and my energy level was near 0. However, on the 3rd day I began to feel my energy return. I lost the sluggishness and hunger I often felt in the afternoon when eating carbs.I no longer feel bloated after eating a meal. I look forward to the day when I can start adding some carbs back to my diet, but I will NEVER eat the way I used to again!!! I'm very greatful to have found this book and the answer to my struggle with weight!!! I hope others who have tried every other diet out there will give this a try. IT WORKS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Review: 6 mos after Atkins & comments on other reviews
In my first review I was happy to report losing 20 lbs in two months. Now, at 6 months, I've lost 30 lbs, and feel better than ever. It's been over 20 years since I was this light!

As for the book itself, it is clear, persuasive, easy to follow, easy to use as a reference (looking up answers to specific questions), and it includes helpful extras, such as recipes and a pocket carb-counter.

The diet has always been controversial, but the medical community seems to be turning around to grudging acceptance of the Atkins approach to health. A recent study (not Atkins-sponsored) confirmed that when two control groups dieted using prepared meals from the same source, one using a traditional low-fat approach, the other using Atkins' low-carb approach + 300 additional calories per day, the Atkins group still lost more weight!

Now to the reviews. I've perused the negative reviews, and in most cases they are an attack on their perceptions of the diet itself, not on Atkins book. One reviewer even turned his post into a polemic against obese Americans in general. Silly stuff. Another asked, "Why does a body need to be in a state of ketosis when others have lost weight without doing so?" Obviously, the reviewer did not read Atkins' book--he answers this question--ketosis allows your body to naturally burn fat instead of carbohydrates, resulting in a much more efficient operation, and freeing us to consume fats without fear. Yes, there are other ways to lose fat, but being in ketosis is easier and more efficient.

Bottom-line: If you are looking for a rich, creamy, full-tummy'd approach to weight loss and good health, read the Atkins book for yourself, and give it a try. Most of the naysayers have not read the book, have not given the diet an intelligent try, and some negative posters here are clueless about how hard it is for most of us busy, office-worker types to lose weight.
At the risk of sounding corny, the only you have to lose by trying this diet out is fat and pounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only diet I have been able to stick to
I am always hearing people say that any diet works if you stick to it. Considering that many scientists, not just Dr. Atkins, have come to consider overeating as analogous to a drug addiction, how much sense would it make for someone to say "this drug rehab program works as long as people don't use drugs"? I think that part of saying that a diet works is how likely people are to stick to it. If a treatment, whatever it is, has a very high drop-out rate, is it really any good? No, because it suggests that the side effects are too awful. This has been my experience with every other diet I have tried - I starved! I even felt depressed.
I gained about 30 lbs. during college and all along I tried to lose them (even as they piled up). I tried lean cuisine, slimfast, and all other sorts of low-fat diets and only gained weight, not to mention I couldn't stick to them because I craved food all day. Anyone who saw the movie "Supersize Me" will remember that the guy developed an addiction to McDonald's and also got depressed. I'm convinced this has more to do with the carbs than with the fat. I felt the same way on a low-fat diet.
Furthermore, I'm eating healthier than ever. All my calories are coming from foods rich in nutrients: meat, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, berries, nuts, etc. I have even developed a taste for some of these vegetables and even tofu. Three months ago (when I started the diet), I couldn't conceive of not eating rice or potatoes with every meal. Now I just see them as empty calories.
I have never eaten nor felt this great in my life. My food is delicious (even my fiance who is not technically on the diet loves it), and I no longer snack 10 times a day.
How much weight have I lost? About 10 lbs, meaning I have reached my healthy weight (I was very skinny when I started college). Most importantly, I lost this weight early on and have not put it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you seriously need and want to lose weight
My Doctor asked me if I had tried Atkins when I complained about the incredible frustration I had trying to lose weight while I just got bigger and bigger. I bought it. I read it (4 times now). I've lost 54lbs and have kept it off for over a year so far. I will lose another 20-30. No I don't "hope" I can. No I'm not "trying" to. I will. I now have control of my eating for the first time in my living memory. I eat healthier than I ever have in my life. Your choice but for me this has been the most beneficial book for my health physically and mentally that I have ever read plain and simple.

2-0 out of 5 stars yet another diet book
America, when are you going to stop spending money on fad diet books and magazines? The same simple way to stay healthy has been with us since the paleolithic era, and always will be: eat all things in moderation and get some excercise. That has been the only proven formula to stay at a reasonable weight since time began. Atkins, the current flavor of the year, is popular because some people believe, fairly or not, that you can lose weight simply by cutting carbs and they forget that we all need a bit of excercise. (Have you ever noticed how a lot of these health gurus drop dead at age 50?) So, stop reading stupid books and go take a walk around the block. You know enough not to stuff yourself at McDonald's, just eat less and exercise more, for heaven's sake. Surprise! You'll lose weight! ... Read more

It is bread and not butter that is the enemy in Dr. Atkins's popular and controversial low-carbohydrate/high-fat diet. In In Atkins for Life, he continues his decades-long crusade against low-fat eating. Atkins argues that low-fat meals are high-carbohydrate missiles, causing the body to produce excess insulin, which then produces fat, slows down metabolism, and tips the scale.Instead, he urges readers to stop counting calories and fat grams and start counting carbs to rev up their metabolism and burn fat as an energy source. The question of whether "ketosis," the fat meltdown he advocates, is healthy or harmful is a central question of this sequel to the bestselling Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution. Packed with recipes, menus, carbohydrate counters, and strategies for staying with the plan, this book is less clear than its predecessor. It veers back and forth between how to begin and how to maintain "a controlled carbohydrate lifestyle." It is also more promotional, with photos of satisfied slim folks and pitches for the branded Atkins products. Still, with its pages of testimonials and studies about weight loss, lowered cholesterol, and increased energy, it is hard to argue with Atkins’s results. He puts his proof in the pudding. --Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Atkins for Life
My husband follows the Atkins diet; I'm the one who does most of the food shopping and cooking for the whole family. We both find "Atkins for Life," which focuses on maintaining the weight loss you have achieved through a low-carbohydrate diet, to be a big help. It reviews all the phases of the Atkins diet, but if you are just starting out you are better off with "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution." This book gives detailed instructions for transitioning from the rather extreme meat-and-cheese-based diet to a more balanced plan that includes higher carb vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. Whether you want to count carbs, learn about the science behind the diet, use lists of foods to eat "regularly," "in moderation," and "sparingly," or follow sample menus, this book has it all. Also included are tips for restaurant eating and substitutions for home cooking, as well as many recipes. The role of exercise is emphasized too. I'm not wild about the recipes (sugar substitute, yuck!) but the food lists provide guidance for preparing Atkins-friendly, well-balanced meals for the whole family. Like some of the other reviewers, I found the constant "selling" of the Atkins plan and products to be a turn-off, but my husband liked reading the success stories and uses the products so I guess there really is something here for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for weight maintenance the Atkins way!
As many people know, losing weight is often times easier than keeping it off. Atkins addresses this issue in his latest book, "Atkins For Life".

The book "Atkins for Life" is an excellent resource book. It is filled with practical advice and tips on how to make your low carbohydrate weight loss a permanent success.

Over the years Atkins name has been maligned and sneered at as he pioneered the idea that its not the fat in our diet that makes us fat its the excessive amounts of carbohydrates we have been consuming. The low fat diet was presented to Americans as the best way and the healthiest way to lose weight. However, recent research has revealed the low fat diet to be a miserable failure. As the fat has been taken out of the diet carbohydrates have been added in their place and many Americans have become obese and unhealthy. Dr. Atkin's proposal that eating less carbs can lead to weight loss and better health has been vindicated.

The Atkins weight loss method is a 4 step approach. Phase 1 INDUCTION is where you limit your carbs to 20 grams per day to jump start your weight loss program. Phase 2 OWL or ONGOING WEIGHT LOSS allows you to slowly add back carbs until you discover the amount of carbs you can eat and still lose weight.
Phase 3 PRE-MAINTENANCE has you slow your weight loss by adding in more carbs so good eating habits become ingrained. And in Phase 4 LIFETIME MAINTENANCE you learn to enjoy a wider variety of foods and maintain your weight loss. This book "Atkins for Life" discusses each of the phases but is mainly concerned with Phase 4 LIFETIME MAINTENANCE.
You can learn what to do to lose weight with this book, but for in depth information, you would be better off selecting "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution".

This book covers in great detail how to maintain the weight you have lost. Part One: A Lifetime Plan recaps the Atkins program. It includes information on the diet, the effect on your body, putting it into practice and how to benefit from exercise. Part Two: Eating for Life teaches you how to get your kitchen in order, and gives thirty meal plans with carb counts. It includes twenty meal plans for special occasions. 125 recipes for success are also given.

YES you can eat carbohydrates. You can have bread, cake and pizza or even wine. The key of course is knowing how many carbohydrates your body can handle each day without gaining weight. And using techniques to get the most bang from your carbohydrate buck. These techniques are taught in the book. For example if you crave bread Atkins has several pages of information to help you make the best selection. Breads are ranked on their ability to effect your insulin levels. There are also tips on how to enjoy bread without overdoing it such as eating the crust only. Atkins shares techniques like this for a variety of foods.

Comfort foods are a big issue for many. Atkins tells you what to choose or what to substitute. Eating out is another area covered. Best choices at different restaurants is given in detail. Atkins also includes mental tips to help you avoid backsliding.

Key to the book is the detailed menu plans given for 4 ranges of carb levels at 45g, 60g, 80g and 100g . Just adjust up or down so you are at your level (which you learn from his diet). Meal plans are simple and include snacks. A sample day for a 60 g plan would include 1 slice lemon zucchini bread, with an egg and ricotta cheese for breakfast. Meat loaf with whole-grain bread and salad for lunch.
Jerk shrimp with pasta or collard greens for dinner and 1/2 cup of cantaloupe for a snack. Carb counts are given so you can substitute as desired.

Crab Deviled Eggs, Cherry Muffins, Mixed Berry Shortcakes, Pinwheel Cookies, Roasted Chicken and Feta Cheese Wrap, Chocolate Souffle and Southwestern Style Pork Fajitas are among the 125 recipes. Recipes include nutritional information, but are not pictured.

The 370 page book also includes self tests and quizzes to help you stay on task. My favorite part of "Atkins For Life" has to be the success stories. There are a number of remarkable stories in the book with black and white photos included! Very inspiring!

The book "Atkins For Life" makes living a low carb life in our high carb world easier and enjoyable! I highly recommend it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good advice but a bit wishy-washy
Anyone who's read the original Atkins Diet Revolution will get a bit of a shock when they skim through this book. It feels like more of a marketing effort, tailored to the mainstream, than traditional Atkins. They seem to have bowed to criticism a bit from the media and mainstream nutritionists.

That said, the book has a lot of good information and is very well organized. I just take it with a grain of salt (actually potassium salt substitute).

Dr. Atkins' New Carbohydrate Gram Counter has a slightly misleading name. While grams of carbohydrate are listed for various foods, there are also protein and fat grams listed for each entry. With more than 1,200 listings, including hundreds of brand-name products, this makes a handy, portable reference. It should be noted, however, that that the Gram Counter is really meant as a companion to Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution; the brief dietary information included in the introduction to the Gram Counter isn't of much use by itself. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars A more comprehensive guide is needed.
The Atkins diet is a regime that works for many or most people. For me, I have gotten back to the weight I was in high school by following the Atkins program. I am a true believer.

As followers of Atkins know, the one thing you have to be pretty conscientious about is counting how many grams of carbohydrate are in your diet. While this book is helpful for that, it is far from complete. For example, I like to drink wine. This book only lists a view varieties of alcoholic beverages as regards their carbohydrate gram count. What I was hoping for when I bought this book was something that might have contained say, 3 or 4 dozen varieties of white wine and their gram counts. But no. Same with salad dressings--it would be great to have listings by brand, with dozens of brands. Once again, this book only contains several brands.

This book is somewhat better than the gram count section contained at the back of Dr. Atkins book, (Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution) but not a lot better. While this book may be the best available, someone out there would do well to publish a much more comprehensive guide. Adherents of the Atkins program would probably snap it up.

The Atkins diet program is a program that works as Dr. Atkins describes it in his book. A comprehensive guide to carbohydrate counts in brand-name foods would be helpful, but this guide falls short.

4-0 out of 5 stars Quick pocket reference for the diet-conscious.
If you've started the Atkins diet, or at least read the diet book, then you already realize the importance of counting the carbohydrate grams you consume. Please allow me to clear up some FAQ's:

1. This book will not teach you how to do the Atkins diet - for that, read Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution.

2. This book will show you total carbohydrate, fat, and protein gram counts for standard portion sizes of general or common foods. For instance, there is a general listing for "fig" but not "Kadota fig" or "Mission". If you are into more exotic fare than the standard American foods listed - say for instance that you like obscure asian fruits like or you're a oeniphile who is interested in the carb count of 60 different varieties of French wine- then you will have to do research for the carbs in your special interest on your own.

3. This book will not make specific recommendations as to which ones to avoid, eat more of, etc. - that's not its job. Instead, you are allowed to make those decisions for yourself based on the information presented and your individual allowance of daily carbs.

4. This book does not list calories because the Atkins diet is qualitative, not quantitative.

5. This book will, however, be a quick on-the-spot reference guide for Atkins dieters. It is designed to be portable and easy to understand at a glance when you need information in a hurry.

Are there any flaws? Yes. For one thing, IMHO, the price could come down a bit considering that this book is a very small, almost the size of those supermarket pocket books at the checkout counter that cost only 99 cents or so. Also, it would have been helpful if Dr. Atkins had included the fiber content along with the fats, carbs and protein so that one could calculate total impact carb grams and make more educated decisions. Still, I believe this is the best carb gram counter out there for low-carb dieting purposes. I find myself consulting it quite often.

4-0 out of 5 stars The TRUTH about Dr. Atkins death
It is astonishing to read the slam pieces here about Dr. Atkins so-called obesity and overweight condition at the time of his death. Here are the facts:
* He previously had a heart condition called cardiomyopathy -- a serious disease of the heart muscle which is unrelated to diet.
* He died of a head injury because of an accident falling on slippery ice and not of being overweight.
* His actual weight was 200 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital at the time of his accident. The erroneous reports of him weight 258 lbs was based on his weight at the time of his death. The extra weight was not fat, but an accumulation of body fluids linked to organ failure during his coma.
* His previous reported heart attack was due to a viral infection and not diet related. He spoke openly of his condition on various national news programs.
* The report that was released about him being overweight was leaked to the press by a group named "Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine", which is an ardent opponent of the Atkins diet. In short, they distorted his weight by reporting the weight at the time of death - 258 lbs, and not at the time of his admittance - 200 lbs...an obvious attempt to discredit and distort the facts surrounding Dr. Atkins death.
* A formal complaint has been filed by the Medical Examiner of New York regarding the suspicious leak of this information to the public by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine."
* The disinformation surrounding Dr.Atkins untimely death is politically driven by the AMA and other detractors of the diet.

Dr. Atkins book, New Diet Revolution has turned the AMA and other nutritional views upside down and has created a furor over the standard edicts of the medical profession. What is not said among the detractors of the Diet is that it is safe and it works. The information contained in this book will not only help you lose weight, it could save your life. The food industry, especially the bread and pasta industry have lost hundreds of millions of dollars because of the low carb revolution. Is it any wonder that this diet is under so much fire? Keep an open mind and read the book.

As a side note, ignor the mumbo-jumbo rantings and ravings of the "Elixir Diet" system (see below). The hatred and mis-information spread by the reviewer is evidence enough that the Elixir system is phony as a three cent penny. Nuff said. The guy hasn't even read the Atkins book!

1-0 out of 5 stars Why Follow Dr. Fatkins? The Dead & Obese Weight Loss Guru
Why model yourself after failure? Dr. Atkins is dead. At only 72. And he suffered clinical death from cardiac arrest a year before he died. Autopsy showed he had suffered a heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension. As if this wasn't bad enough, Dr. Atkins was morbidly obese at his death! 258 pounds!!

Why kill yourself learning to count carbohydrate grams? And end up like Dr. Fatkins? Er, Atkins. The funny thing is it's harder to count carbohydrate grams than calories!

But more importantly, Why model yourself after a diet guru who was fat, fat, fat??

258 pounds at the time of his death! And why risk the same "side effects" as Dr. Atkins got -- heart attack and hypertension?

Not to mention the other side effect. Which can destroy your social life. Horrible bad breath!

Why not model yourself after a guru who has really stayed slim? The secret of success is to model yourself after success.

After the Atkins diet failed me miserably, a very successful friend introduced me to The Elixxir Program. The Elixxir Program is based on the only scientific way to achieve dramatic weight loss. And keep it off for life.

And the guru Elixxir is his own best testimonial and proof that The Elixxir Program works.

Ever wondered why all the Orthodox Jews, Moslems, Hindus and Buddhists can stay on such "impossible" religious diets? Is it because they're stronger than you and me?

No, it's because they have a philosophy/worldview and lifestyle which SUPPORTS their diets.

And this is why The Elixxir Program works. And why Atkins diet and all the other diets do not. The Elixxir Program comes with an exciting philosophy and lifestyle which will empower you to lose weight and keep them off. It is in this book The ImmorTalist Manifesto on Amazon.

Read The ImmorTalist Manifesto to get the worldview to support your weightloss efforts and make it stick!

And then run to the elixxir.com website and find out about the Executive Memo telling you all about The Elixxir Program.

If anything can make you slim for life, The Elixxir Program can.

I should know. I had a "love handle" or "beer belly" around my waist that I couldn't get rid of no matter what. Until I got on The Elixxir Program. It's a miracle. Actually, totally scientific. The only diet program that is documented with an overhwhelming body of scientific research and articles.

Why follow a weight loss guru who was fat? Why not follow a weight loss guru who is as fabulously slim and healthy as you want to be? Elixxir is your man! Not Dr. Fatkins.;)

Bonus: Unlike Atkins regimen which speeds up your aging, The Elixxir Program is also the only scientific anti-aging eating program!

So "kill two birds with one stone," lose weight and stay young!

1-0 out of 5 stars Pointless
This whole Atkins craze is getting pretty ridiculous right now. Carbohydrates are not the problem people, do you still not get it? You gain weight from excessive eating of ANYTHING (if you eat 40 pounds of oranges you're going to gain weight from that too). Exercise and moderation is the key. Good grief, even Aristotle knew this, yet 2300 years later people still don't believe it. ... Read more

Two colleagues of the late Dr. Robert Atkins take on the obesity epidemic's deadly twin: type 2 diabetes. Dr. Mary Vernon and Jacqueline Eberstein, RN, adapt the carb-cutting, fat-allowing Atkins nutritional approach as a preemptive strike against this fast-growing killer. Diabetes--defined here as a condition in which glucose or blood sugar is above the normal range--is viewed as a preventable problem. "What we hope we have created in this book is a realistic and practical guide to wiping out type 2, one person at a time." Since obesity is the major risk factor for diabetes, they begin with the "fat lie" (i.e., the belief that fat causes obesity) to voice the Atkins mantra: low fat means high carbs and high carbs are broken down into sugar. With a convincing mix of essay/picture testimonials, clinical studies, quizzes, checklists, and menu planners and recipes, Vernon and Eberstein make the case for diet and lifestyle changes to alter the metabolism of those at risk for diabetes. They have done a yeoman's job of translating Atkins'smedical nutrition advice into a step-by-stepprogram. One can quibble about their missionary zeal or the omnipresent eggs in the breakfast sample menus. At times, the scientific data are overly detailed or hidden within a quiz. Thankfully, there is a spot-on summary of the book's paradigm-busting ideas in the appendix.-- Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR THOSE ON ATKINS OR OTHER LOW CARB DIETS!
I've been following the Atkins diet for a short time and decided to buy this to save time preparing meals. This is just a great help in following the Atkins way of eating. The recipes truly are "quick and easy" and delicious. Another plus is that the book isn't overmelmingly long (not one of those "1,000 mouth watering recipes")! There are several recipes for each section (ie; beef, poultry, appetizers, seafood, desserts, etc.) - just enough to give you varied menu ideas but not overwelm you with decisions.
This is good eating even for those who are not dieting. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth about health and weight loss!
Atkin's tell us the truth about health and weight loss! For years I've believed that I should have sugars and bread, but when I eat them and keep my fat intake to a minimum, I get very ill. I read this book and FINALLY I realized that I'd been duped all along.

Now I follow the Atkins method for weight loss, exercise and Vita-Nutrients and my chronic fatigue/fibromyalgia is GONE! This is a "life-style" that is easy to adopt and maintain!

You do not need medications to counter-act the symptoms of disease, you need Atkins' diet and Vita-Nutrient solutions to rid yourself of them once and for all.

Just by my reading his books, Dr. Atkins has saved my life and reinfused my zest for living. I've since recommended his diet to others and they have been successful, as well.

Thank you Dr. Atkins, from all of us!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a Miracle
I was not obese, but I knew I was over weight. I tried to convince myself that the wieght was ok on my athletic frame. Wrong!!!! When I learned my trygliceride count was at the ceiling I asked my doctor what to do. He said go low carb. I had no idea what this meant. A friend suggested Atkins. I went to the website and figured out what to do. I started immediately. In four weeks I lost 20 lbs without going to the gym. Now I am at the gym every other day and I am still losing weight. I had another blood test. My trygliceride count went way down and my bad cholestorol also went way down. My Dr was amazed.

Trust me. I was never able to lose weight until I started Atkins. I am not hungary. I eat great meals and I feel great. Once you get the hang of this, you can eat what you want with the confidence of being able to control yourself. You also have the will power to avoid things like fast food, sugar bread baskets and other unhealthy foods.

I got these books for Father's Day. There is a load of information here. Recipes, eating strategies, information on medical studies etc.

If you are serious about it, get the books to go with it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Less carbs - better way to eat
On the induction phase of this diet plan I lost 10 lbs in one week, and it was easier than ever (and I've been on every diet). I continue to use what I learned in this book and I now weigh the lowest I've weighed in 7 and a half years!

1-0 out of 5 stars Why follow a Dead Dr. Fatkins?
Why Follow Dr. Fatkins? Er, Dr. Atkins. The Dead & Obese Weight Loss Guru? Why model yourself after failure?

Dr. Atkins is dead. At only 72. And he suffered clinical death from cardiac arrest a year before he died. Autopsy showed he had suffered a heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension. As if this wasn't bad enough, Dr. Atkins was morbidly obese at his death! 258 pounds!! There should be full disclosure on this!

Why model yourself after a diet guru who was fat, fat, fat? 258 pounds at the time of his death! And greatly risk the same "side effects" as Dr. Atkins got -- heart attack and hypertension?

Not to mention the other side effect. Which few know about. But which I discovered.

Read The ImmorTalist Manifesto!

From the wife of the late Dr. Robert Atkins, here is an inventive cookbook that will allow low carb devotees to keep the faith without cutting down the fat. Grounded in the carb counting, fat allowing formula that launched millions of dieters, Veronica Atkins has designed a book "to make doing Atkins a permanent part of your life."

Following a refresher course on the four phases of Atkins, she includes 250 easy to follow recipes and cooking tips geared for people close to their weight goals, in which she underlines the essentials of low carb ingredients and preparation (substitute wheat for white, splenda for sugar, nuts for breadcrumbs, cream or broth for flour). Gathered into three main sections ("day by day", "on the weekend", and "party and holiday menus"), recipes range from family dinners, brownbag lunches and snacks to brunch dishes and camping treats. Singles "tired of dividing recipes by four" will also enjoy the "cooking for one" section, and those who fear the holiday temptations will find inspiration to stay on track in such creative fares as Atkins-friendly Thanksgiving side dishes, low carb Xmas eggnog, Zucchini Hanukkah latkes, Superbowl pomegranate guacamole, Oscar Night chocolate martinis and a dozen uses for leftover matzo.

Readers may be distracted from the simplicity and freshness of the recipes by a few zany suggestions (alphabetizing spices to save time) and the marketing of the Atkins brand products in the many recipes that use Atkins mixes, pastas and flavorings. Yet the book’s creative approach will assure the faithful that a low carb diet can be a moveable feast. --Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars Atkins' is a life-style!
I rate this book with 5 stars because it takes patience and persistance to figure out how to remove the "gunk" from most recipes, which is what has been done here, and still have them taste good!

Unfortunately you have to "cook from scratch", which I personally love to do. Fortunately, someone has done most of the leg work for you. This is a good overview of how to prepare low carb foods, from soup to desserts.

Atkins's low carb philosophy is a life-style, so anyone who hopes to be successfull should read this book and get other low carb recipes as well, and then adapt them to their own taste.

Now I eat as much "cheese cake" without guilt as I want, continue to shrink in size and feel great.

What more of a testimonial can I make!

Thank you Dr. Atkins and Fran Gare!

Hands down the best low carb cookbook with the Candida diet in mind. I've purchased several in the past 3 months, but this book has some fantastic recipes for the Candida diet (a week's worth of menus and all of the recipes are fantastic!). If you are looking for a recipe book for low carb/Candida, look no further.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great at-hand assistant to your carb counting
Basically the condensed version of the book of the same name, but has great appeal and is handy in the kitchen.

It is a hard cased box of recipe cards, a small book, and fluff. It's great in a sense that you can remove all the recipes that you would never dream of eating or making, and give them to a friend. This also makes space in the box so you can flip through easier.

There are also flash cards of tips and refresher info so you don't have to dig through the book. A few of these cards tell you what the box is about, and otherwise blank, and you can toss those making even more room in the box.

The restaurant pocket thingy is not much to speak of. It's basically a big sheet of paper folded small with carboard tabs glued to it. It's very basic with a lot of wasted space. Has some value, but would be obnoxious opening in front of others. It really needed to be a little booklet.

The mini-book has 30 meal plans, the carb counting list, and daily carb log. This is the item that screws up the construction of the box. It should have been made more narrow than wide to make the box more compact. due to the extra inches of the book, the box is a lot taller than it should be with wasted space. The book is handy and full of easy to find info, but the meal plans should have been given it's own page for the 45, 60, 80, and 100 counts. But they are color coded. However, what is important is the content of course. The only true faults are on the constuction. As well, there was no need for so many wasted blank pages for a carb log. No one will use it as a typical notepad is best, and portable. This book is not.

There are flip tab inserts in the box for the days of the week. This is a good idea, however, the recipes are for many more than one person. So if you live alone, you might be eating one of these recipes all week. I suggest buying a package of blank 4"x6" index cards and writing down all the items you eat individually on each card. Construct your daily meal plan by choosing your own cards. You can always put the mini-book on the shelf if you need more room in the box. And remember, all these recipes are in the main book anyway.

If you do not have the "Atkins for Life" book, get that first. Or get both. Don't just get this box. It will be too confusing.

Atkins is popular because people are seeing that it actually works. Do it for two days, and you will be shocked at your weight loss and energy! ... Read more

    Book Description

THE HEALING POWER OF NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENTS

Long a champion of complementary medicine and nutritional therapy, Dr. Robert Atkins, author of the #1 best-seller Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, presents the scientific basis for the use of vitamins, minerals, amino acids, herbs, and hormones in the treatment and prevention of many of the chronic illnesses that plague us today. These vita-nutrients harness the body's ability to heal itself, rather than resorting to conventional drugs and invasive procedures, and address the true causes of disease instead of temporarily alleviating symptoms, promoting longer-lasting and more effective healing.

In this comprehensive guide, Dr. Atkins shares vital information on more than 120 supplements, including:

  • The specific restorative powers of each nutrient

  • How to determine the optimal dosage schedule

  • How to obtain supplements that are new to the market or are available only in limited supply

  • The formula for a basic foundation of vita-nutrients that almost everyone needs every day

Best of all, Dr. Atkins shows you how to create a personalized program to help improve or regain your health by using combinations of nutritional supplements specifically designed to help cure or prevent more than fifty common medical conditions, including arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, or infections. Backed by cutting-edge scientific research, his recommendations are both safe and effective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This will one day be regarded as standard medical fact.
This book surpasses all the books I own on herbs and vitamins. It also represents a life beyond being a prescription victim of the AMA. Again Dr. Atkins puts his tush on the line by giving people advice that is no where near conventional but puts the trust in the reader, his "patient" to try to heal themselves by natural and most often benign methods that bypass pharmaceutical side effects, toxic build up and cross interaction. He once again tries to change the staus quo with his off the beaten path knowledge and pays no mind to the flack he might receive in his efforts. This man believes in what he is doing and this book is a show-case of his whole medical stand point. I love it! A must for herbalist and vitamin-health gurus! A must for those with that want to take charge of their own health! Exhaustive and extensive about vitamins, the low-down on many products that the health industry over sells, and some you may never have heard of that could actually save your life! Dr. Atkins takes you on a very informed tour of the natural health product section, and teaches you a plethora of acquired knowlwdge.

5-0 out of 5 stars Explore the options.
Like Dr. Murry's Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine, Dr. Atkins book acts as a reference resource beyong compare. Many of us yearn to take our health into our own hands. With comprehensive books such as this, we can learn more and consequently demand more from our health care professionals. These are not "non-cures". Nature can provide an abundance of what our bodies need. When we are ill, we just need them in a more concentrated form. Dr Atkins solutions have validity. One site I have found where we can find the types of vita-nutrients that Atkins recommends is Papanature. His prices, service, selection are the best I have found. His documentation of these products correspond with the same information proposed by Atkins.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you buy only one book on supplements
This is an excellent reference book on nutritional supplements. Far superior to any I have ever read. Page for page, you get relevant, researched information.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent content, but disregard the conspiracy theory
This book has useful and helpful information about vitamins, minerals, amino acids and their role in the body. I couldn't be happier with the technical part, very well documented. However, a big con of this book is Dr. Atkins' huge ego and conspiracy theories. He almost claims that he started the vitamin hype and the nutrition-based approach to medicine. We know this is not true. Many others deserve so much more credit. Also, he goes down a path of silly and unfounded arguments about how the government is evil and doesn't want to raise the RDA of certain nutrients. This is silly. The RDA should be as low as it can be. Otherwise food manufacturers would be adding tons of unnecessary vitamins to food, more than the bare minimum to just prevent diseases. People would feel compelled to take mega doses of vitamins without proper information about them. It's up to us to raise our intake if we want to. RDA is not supposed to be the optimum amount for everyone, just the minimum to prevent simple deficiencies that could cause diseases. Also, he uses intricate reasoning to arrive at conclusions that vitamins are not more widespread because food manufacturers lobby against them. One could argue the opposite, that vitamins are becoming widespread because their manufacturers are lobbying for people to accept them. There's always a silly conspiracy theory for any subject. Dr. Atkins chose an absurd one and he stuck to it throughout his book. I suggest the reader takes his non-medical opinions (politics, RDA, etc) with a grain of salt. But not too much salt, because sodium is bad for you :-) Otherwise, the book is excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everyone should read this book!
This information on nutrition, like in all of Dr. Atkins' books, is well researched and well written. It's easy to understand and enables the reader to identify a condition then follow the instructions to alleviate it.

We all know now that Atkins has been on the right track all along, but I had no idea how much of a role nutrition played until I took advantage of the research and resolved a long standing debilitating physical problem of my own.

Thank you Dr. Atkins! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A real eye opener
This book alerts readers to information traditional dentists don't want you to know. Mercury is a known poison. Mercury in dental fillings, Dr. Breiner explains, appears to leach into your body. Can mercury poisoning cause Alzheimer's Disease? This book, written for the lay person, sets out a convincing case for banning mercury in dental fillings -- and a very convincing case for running to your dentist to have all of your silver fillings quickly replaced.

This well-written book highlights the relationship between "whole-body health" and dentistry. It's a must-read for anyone seeking hidden causes of some serious ailments.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Book You Won't Be Able to Put Down!
This was the second of two books about the effect of toxic dental work on a person's overall health. Thank you Dr. Breiner for getting the word out. If you have silver fillings and/or root canals in your mouth - - and if you have ANY health issues, this is a MUST READ! It is very well written and thoroughly researched. Hopfully all dentists of the future will care enough about their patients' health to pursue continuing education if the field of holistic dentistry. THANK GOD I had my amagams removed (just after reading this and another great book). Everyone should read this book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Update to "Some good, some bad"
After reviewing this book again, talking with many dentists from the US and Europe, and doing even more reading. I am downgrading my opinion of this book.

I still stand by Dr. Breiner's assertion that "silver/mercury" amalgam is bad for you. Not only is the mercury frequently toxic to many people, but amalgams are not bonded to the tooth like composites or ceramics. This requires the dentist to drill out more tooth structure to make the amalgam hold, thus leaving the tooth even weaker. Additionally, since the amalgam is not bonded, amalgam offers less physical support to the tooth (than bonded materials) and the tiny gap between the amalgam and the tooth can sometimes (but not always) lead to secondary tooth decay. (All of which lead to more tooth problems down the road).

The issue on both root canals and fluoride is still up in the air (IMO), but something that we should all pay attention to. From what I've read, topical fluoride is okay, but fluoridated water may not be so great for you. If you require a root canal, ask around about BioCalex as an alternate form of root canal therapy.

As for Electro-dermal screening a.k.a Electo-accupuncture According to Voll (EAV): Voll was a German scientist who did his research in the 50's (if I recall correctly). From my understanding, his research has never been verified or validated. I have many German friends who are medical doctors and they have never heard of this device or methodology of testing. As far as I can tell, EAV is a total scam that is frequently used by naturopaths and homeopaths to drain money out of people's wallets. Outside of that, EAV is completely useless.

In a nutshell, the chapters about amalgam, fluoride, and root canal issue are a good introduction. IMHO, the rest is either completely false, dubious, or a waste of time/money.

Personally, I would skip this book. There are better and more up-to-date sources on the amalgam, fluoride, and root canal issues. Though if you don't know anything about these 3 topics, this book might be a decent primer for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book
I have read a very large number of books on alternative healthcare over the last 5 years and I consider this book on wholistic dentistry to be one of the best. It covers virtually ever aspect of the subject in an easy to read, interesting manner with a positive and constructive attitude. Read this book, it might change your life forever.

5-0 out of 5 stars From root canals or amalgam fillings
Whole-Body Dentistry: Discover The Missing Piece To Better Health by dental surgeon Mark A. Briener provides a unique education specifically written for the non-specialist general reader into how dental health affects the health of one's whole body, and ranges from the option of alternative treatments to avoid unpleasant side effects from root canals or amalgam fillings, to how to guard against the degradation of periodontal disease, to speculations on the future of dentistry. Whole-Body Dentistry is a very highly recommended and accessible instructional reference for health-conscious minded individuals looking to take the best care of all parts of their body. It should also be compulsory reading for all students of dentistry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This diet works
I went on the Atkins diet 2 years ago, for about 5 months, and lost 25 pounds. I never felt better; my headaches went away, fatigue during the day was gone, I was able to wake up earlier in the morning. I need to lose 25 more pounds to be at my college weight. Even after I stopped the diet, and ate a lot more carbs, my weight loss remained. I noticed as I added back more carbohydrates, that many old symptoms returned. I am back on the more restricted part of the diet again because I want to lose the rest of the weight. I will say that you eat a moderate amount of protein, vegetables, fish, good oils, and I think it is a balanced, long-term diet that can work for many of us. Once you reach your weight loss goal, you add back in a lot more carbohydrates, all in the form of healthy vegetables, nuts, seeds, and moderate amounts of fruit, bread, etc.

I have two friends who lost 40 pounds (him) and 60 pounds (her) on this diet, their blood pressure normalized, and their cholesterol count actually went from high to normal in 6 months. I have another friend who told her doctor she was going on the diet, he warned her not to. In three months she came back, her blood pressure was almost normal, after being very high, and she felt better than she had in years. Her doctor told her to keep doing whatever she was doing, because it was working.

Another friend went on the high carb/ low fat diet. She did lose at first, but was hungry all the time and gained the weight back and more when she went off of it. There are people who do well on this kind of low-fat, high carb diet, and Atkins talks about this and why.

No diet is for everyone, each of our bodies are unique. I have found this diet to be excellent in balancing blood sugar and eliminating the resultant fatigue, emotional swings, and headaches. Furthermore, I am rarely hungry on this diet, and after you get used to the change, it is delicious and very healthy. The people I have talked to who feel this diet is unhealthy haven't really read and studied the diet, or actually followed the diet for a period of time.

I read tons of nutrition books, was a vegetarian for years, and got so sick, autoimmune disease, low thyroid, indigestion, heartburn, and so on, that I began searching for a diet that would restore my health. It was only after being on this diet that I got well, completely. So for some of us, it really works.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Atkins Two Thumbs Up!!
I have had the Atkins diet book for over a year and I just started my new way of eating 11 days ago. I have lost 6 pounds so far and feel great. My best friend and her husband have both lost 10 pounds each over the past 11 days. At first I thouhght this program would be hard but it really isn't, who thought you could lose weight eating bacon cheese burgers. I was very skeptical at first and didn't believe I'd lose a pound let alone go into ketosis, but I did after 3 days. I recommend all skeptics to try the diet for the 14 days and I bet after you see the results you will continue. Finally after many diets and diet pills I feel confident that I will reach my weight lose goals. THANK YOU DR. ATKINS

5-0 out of 5 stars The Man Should Be Canonized!!!
I have been through everything.... low fat, Optifast, cabbage soup, the Dean Ornish plan, and I can say unequivocally, that Dr. Atkins' diet is the only one that has given me such dramatic results, with a minimum of pain and suffering.

I started Atkins about two months ago, weighing a huge amount (I'll never tell how much, but it was serious). I have stayed on induction for the past two months, pretty much without falling off. It's not that I have such great will power...I don't. But I really have absolutely no craving for carbohydrates or sweets, this from a convinced dessertophile. The net result is that in two months, I've shed about 34 lbs and gone down four pant sizes. My goal weight is still far off, but I feel better than I have in years.

For Atkins to work, you have to be pretty religious about it I think. I have not found induction at all restrictive, except that I do miss fruit, especially apples. I also have found that exercise is not an option with this diet...it's essential, as the Dr. claims. The combination is more effective than diet or exercise is alone. Between the two, the health benefits of this lifestyle have been enormous. I had a blood workup done about 6 weeks into the program and it was excellent. My cholesterol was down fewer than 200 for the first time in 12 years, my heart rate was a healthy 72, and my cardio health was excellent.

There are things to watch out for on this diet. The water-drinking requirement should not be taken lightly. It flushes out the kidneys, which is pretty important in a low carb diet. Also, forcing yourself not to cheat is also pretty important. The yoyo effect of a dessert on the weekend can be pretty tough...it's as if you are starting and stopping a diet over and over again and that's tough on your body. Supplements should be taken, especially vitamin D and C since the induction phase is particularly light in these vitamins. A fiber drink is essential for maintaining good bowel health. But if you can follow all of this, the plan is not too hard, nor is it too extreme...Dean Ornish...now THAT'S extreme! (I had good results on that as well, but it was too extreme for me to follow forever.)

One note about the food...the recipes in the book and on the Atkins website are excellent, truly gourmet. And there's a nice blend of fast meals and fancier meals. The desserts though are disappointing. I find that it's better for me just to avoid dessert altogether than to try a low carb substitute. There's still enough delicious food without the need for sweets, and if I get even a little hankering for something sweet, there's always sugar free jello. All in all, this has been, for me, an almost painless diet and one that I highly recommend people consider, with advice of course from a medical professional.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eczema disappeared
First things first, the diet is amazing because anything that gets us away from the white bread, white sugar, white rice mentality has to be recommended. I suffered for years as a child from eczema and had NO idea that this might possibly have been linked to refined carbohydrates. Ok, I admit as I got older I realized that sugar played a huge role in this complaint and for the past few years have been careful of how much sugar I consumed, which really helped and have thus since then been virtually (90%) eczema free. However, I still suffered from very dry skin which a homeopath said would never go away. "We know how to cure eczema, but you have to live with the dry skin". I also suffered in the summer (due to the heat) of eczema in my elbows and backs of legs in the knee area. Well, I believed in thinking that this wouldn't go away went on to continue eating refined carbohydrates and had no idea that these basically reverted into sugar in our bodies. Also, whenever I tried to lose weight by going on a low fat diet (where I would eat a lot of bread), my skin became very scaly and powdery if I didn't use cream. I also suffered terribly from dandruff. But I somehow never linked these things. This was until I read this book. To be very honest, I really haven't lost as much weight as I would have expected, but this might be because two things 1) I only have about 15 pounds to lose and 2) my penchant for alcohol (i.e red wine). I have now cut back to just drinking white wine (lower sugar content) and am starting to see some results. However, this summer (2003) I have declared myself 100% eczema free. I have no dry skin, no patches of eczema this summer, and no dandruff. My skin tone is excellent and I put it all down to this way of eating. I can highly recommend it.
Also, being a flight attendant we all suffer from dry skin and I joked to a colleague (before I started this diet) that if I continued, I would end up looking like a raisin. That has all disappeared. Even on the longest flights I still have good skin tone and not a spot of dryness.
For me the weight-loss has now become secondary. It was a primary issue first off, but has now taken second place. Even if I modify the diet, which I will have to at a later stage because I cannot see myself sticking to it for life, then I will just banish refined carbs including all forms of sugar from my diet. I am extremely grateful to Dr. Atkins and it is a tragedy that he is not around to enjoy all the recognition his books are now getting. Well he can rest assured knowing that the Ralph Waldo Emerson quote can be attributed to him and that is "..to know that just one person has breathed easier because you have lived."

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Atkins' - next steps
Last fall I successfully lost 20 lbs on the Atkins diet - and changed my eating and nutrition habits entirely. Six months into low carb life I have lots of energy and feel good in general. As an added bonus, my husband tried the diet with me to help me with the menus - he dropped 43 lbs and lowered his cholesterol and blood pressure. My goodness. This book came just at the right time when the long term nutrition questions about how to go forward and feel healthy needed answering. Just finished reading this book, and much of the advice has appeal. I find it extremely useful as a guideline for the nutritional supplements that should be part of the daily regimen. I suppose I'll have to make an effort to include kale and spinach in our eating more regularly. We have recommended the diet book to many friends - and everyone who followed the rules lost weight and felt good. Am now sending this book to those good friends and family.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A "10 Star" Book !
"Dr. Atkins' Age-Defeying Diet" will empower you to "add years to your life...and life to your years".

Dr. Atkins has hit another "grand slam" of a life-enhancing best-seller with his "Age-Defying Diet". By combining the best of both sensible eating (the right combination of health-promoting proteins, carbohydrates and fats) and supplying your body with the best "anti-aging" nutrients through diet & nutritional supplements, you can enjoy life to the fullest.

Only through providing your body with the proper (essential) nutrients, and by avoiding "anti-nutrient substances" ("fake" sugar, white flour & man-made fats) can you live a life free of disease and physical / emotional pain & suffering.

I have recommended "Age-Defying Diet" to several people. Those that have read it & given me their feedback are all happy they read it.

"Waste of Money" reviewer doesn't know what he / she is talking about!

"Age Defying Diet" will empower you & your loved ones to take control of your health, and live a longer, healthier, happier & more productive life.

As a side note, ignor the mumbo-jumbo rantings and ravings of the "Elixir Diet" system. The hatred and mis-information spread by the reviewer is evidence enough that the Elixir system is phony as a three cent penny. Nuff said. The guy hasn't even read the Atkins book! Sheesh.

1-0 out of 5 stars Atkins Dead at 72 -- Not Very 'Age-Defying'
Why model yourself after failure? Dr. Atkins is dead. At only 72. And he looked much older than his age.

He also suffered clinical death from cardiac arrest a year before he died. Autopsy showed he had suffered a heart attack, congestive heart failure and hypertension. As if this wasn't bad enough, Dr. Atkins was morbidly obese at his death! 258 pounds!! Where's the full disclosure?!

If you want to stay young, why not model yourself on an anti-aging guru who has? Elixxir is "the only anti-aging guru who has actually stayed young." Marilyn Much, Senior Business Reporter, Investor's Business Daily

Life Extension Magazine, with about 200,000 readers who want to stay young, in a rave review, described Elixxir's book THE IMMORTALIST MANIFESTO (available on Amazon) as

"AN EXTRAORDINARY BOOK WHICH CHALLENGES THE BELIEF THAT WE MUST GROW OLD AND DIE."

After the Atkins 'age-defying' regimen failed him and me miserably, a very successful friend introduced me to The Elixxir Program. It really works! My blood works are those of a 20-something now. After only six months on The Elixxir Program!

The Elixxir Program is based on the only scientific way to dramatically slow down your aging.

Read Elixxir's book The ImmorTalist Manifesto! It gives you the new anti-aging programming needed to really stay young. It's an incredible read.

And then run to the elixxir.com website and find out about the Executive Memo telling you all about The Elixxir Program, the only scientific anti-aging program. This is the how-to "book."

Bonus: The Elixxir Program is also the only scientific way to lose weight. A lot of weight. And to keep the damn fat off for life! So stay young and slim!

Again, doesn't it make perfect sense to model yourself after an anti-aging guru who has actually stayed young?

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
This book has really opened my eyes about eating well. We've all heard about the harmful effects of free radicals and the need for anti-oxidants, but many of us don't know exactly why. Atkins explains the science in clear terms. Understanding how and why free radicals damage us and anti-oxidants protect us really motivates people to eat well (at least it does for me).

Of course, no Atkins book would be complete if it didn't advocate a strict reduction of processed carbs. This book is no different in that respect. What is different, however, is that in this book Atkins makes the strongest case yet outlining exactly how and why sugar and refined carbs harm us, not only by making us gain weight, but also by making us age. He explains clearly and his arguments are all well supported (which is typical for him).

Lastly, this book talks extensively about supplements.

The rumors that Atkins is all about bacon and steak is nonsense. You owe it to yourself to read this book and educate yourself about what Atkins really does advocate. Then you can make an informed decision about how you want to eat (and age). Good luck to you all. ... Read more

"Diet food can be better, richer, and more sumptuous than most everyday foods," says Dr. Robert Atkins, author of the massive bestseller, Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. Carbohydrates, in his opinion, are the root of metabolic evil and the source of hyperinsulinemia, a condition that makes it next to impossible to lose weight. Billed as a companion to his Diet Revolution book, this collection of recipes focuses on ultralow-carbohydrate dishes. His anticarb stance leads to some unconventional dietary advice: "Remember that, as a rule, the lower the fat content of a milk product, the higher its carbohydrate grams. Use cream, not skim milk; use sour cream, not yogurt."

While these recipes are certainly quick and easy to prepare and feature easy-to-find ingredients, some are very high in fat (Zabaglione, Crab and Avocado Salad, Ham and Cheese Sandwiches, Baked Eggs in Bacon Rings). While it may be true that fat is flavor and is necessary to some extent to keeping blood sugar on an even keel, these recipes won't be helpful for those who are watching their cholesterol or are on similarly restricted diets. ...

It's outrageous they're still selling his diet without a full and frontal disclosure on each copy of the book!

Why model yourself after a diet guru who was fat, fat, fat? 258 pounds at the time of his death! And why risk the same "side effects" as Dr. Atkins got -- heart attack and hypertension?

Not to mention the other side effect. Which can destroy your social life. Horrible bad breath!

This diet and cookbook don't work! I tried it! And hoped it would! It is impossible to stay on Atkins for more than a few weeks. Or you'll end up fat and dead. Like Dr. Fatkins!

Read The ImmorTalist Manifesto!

I've been an on and off dieter all my life. This one worked for me and I've been able to keep the 20 pounds off with steady exercise Weight Watches was too complicated and I felt starved all the time. On this program I look forward to mealtime and feel very strong.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly good recipes
The trick of dieting is to keep from being bored while being able to feed the non-dieters in the family something they won't turn their noses up at. The Dr. Atkins cookbook certainly fills that bill.

I tried the garlic meatballs, putting them on a bed of steamed shaved zucchini to replace noodles, and they were well-received by all. There are some very wonderful appetizers (artichoke hearts in bacon wrap) and generally, these are flavorful recipes that keep the boredom away. Yes, I lost weight, which previously didn't happen on other types of diets, so I give this a big thumbs-up. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The TRUTH about the death of Dr. Atkins

5-0 out of 5 stars Know the truth, and the truth will set you free
I wasn't looking for a cure for my sleep disorder, monthly cramps, headaches and occasional UTIs when I picked up Dr. Atkins'Health Revolution three years back; I was just doing a little preliminary research on the Atkins Diet to see if this guy was some kind of quack, as his detractors often claimed. Lo and behold, a new world of health and physically based well-being opened to me as I began to understand just how my nutritional habits (and lack thereof) were undermining the quality of my life.

A common myth about Dr. Atkins that could stand some clearing up is that he advocates a strict homeopathic system of medical care and an unbalanced meat-only diet. These misconceptions can be corrected by reading the first few chapters. Atkins actually gives well-reasoned explanations of his philosophy of Complementary medicine, an approach that stresses prevention via good dietary habits, vitamin supplements and exercise, then homeopathic and vitamin remedies when there is a problem, and finally traditional medicine when all else fails (Yeah, he's a quack all right!). Without going into the details and logistics here, I was impressed with how logical and simple to apply this system is.

Where Atkins' detractors have hung up on most is the section on diet and how our last 150 years or so of history have affected it. From our pre-industrial food options though the Twentieth Century's sudden proliferation of processed flour and sugar, we can trace the steady rise of heart disease, obesity, tooth decay and Type 2 diabetes. Worse, the industries that stood to profit from the "deadly duo" (and other starchy carb-based foods that were taking the place of meats, eggs, butter and cheese as the bulk of our diets) greatly influenced the medical profession's research and findings. The resulting decline of our national health is a bitter legacy to take responsibility for, and that is just what too many of our processed food makers, doctors, pharmaceutical companies and health experts would have to do once they conceded that Atkins may indeed have been right. For that reason, such an admission may be decades in coming.

Whether or not you find yourself agreeing with that area of Atkins' theory, the book presents sound arguments and encourages a lifestyle that has improved untold lives over the past 30 years. There are changes you can make that will lower your blood pressure, bad cholesterol and triglycerides, eliminate systemic yeast infections, reverse diabetes and re-energize you - all without the use of drugs. In fact, you will probably end up being able to ditch the drugs you are on now.

I believe that someday Dr. Atkins vitamin and diet principles will be the standard recommendations from the health industry. It is hard to argue with the steadily growing segment of our population that simply gets lasting results by using them, and expands slowly via word of mouth. Meanwhile, those happy few of us will continue to benefit from the work done by this incredible man and his steadfast campaigning on our behalf before a tragic head wound took his life a few months ago.
    Rest in peace, Doctor.
    -Andrea, aka Merribelle.

My mom wasn't a heavey person but she quiet smoking and put on some weight and she has gone on your diet and lost the weight she wanted. My husband and I are going on this diet soon. I am only 15 pounds over weight that I feel. My husband wants to loose about 25 pounds. I think this is a great way to loose weight. Thank your for your time. Diana Steinbach

I stayed away from diets for years because they were making me fatter, then I found Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution. Iam losing weight faster than I ever had in the past, and I can live with the food you get to eat! what diet before this lets you eat steak and whipcream!

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Atkins DOES know what he's talking about.
The diet definitely works, my husband and I have been on it for over 4 weeks now, and couldn't believe we were on a diet, actually eating like king and queen. When you put your mind to it, you really can do without the bread, pasta, rice as you watch your weight drop and your waistline re-appear, and your pants start to fit better. We definitely enjoyed the re-newed energy, as I was just in a FOG all the time, and absolutley no energy. Now I'm out walking again, and gardening, and even doing my housework with a little more enthusiasm, though I still would prefer a maid, ha. Our libido has returned, which makes us both feel young again. My husband is even looking younger again, and I'm losing those jowls off of my face and beginning to look younger as well. The cholesterol factor concerned me at first, as I had been such a cholesterol watcher - due to a heart attack 3 years back. But I've been keeping tabs on my cholesterol and it hasn't gone up, and Dr. Atkins provides nutritional supplements that help people who are concerned with the high amount of cholesterol involved in the diet. I took the borage oil capsules and the lethicin granules and that helped, I'm sure as I never suffered any chest discomfort at all as well. I would recommend this diet, it's far superior to the Weight Watcher's program, which allows too many carbohydrates as far as I'm concerned. I have an aunt who has been going there for years and she's still as obese as when she started. She should have been cutting out the carbs and sugars as well. We allow ourselves just the odd alcohol drink, like vodka, or gin, or scotch, with a diet soda, as they only have trace carbs in them. But we feel better having just 1 or 2 a week, and no longer over-indulging in the beer-fests, or pina colada's. They all ADD up in the long run.

I'd like to thank Dr. Atkins for introducing this diet plan, and even though it's been out for many years, I can't remember seeing it, or perhaps I didn't need it until now. I'm 4'11'' and had gotten myself up to 135 lb., which is about 27 lbs more than I used to be. I think with my last pregnancy I was 138 and so I can't believe I made it up to this weight. Well after 4 weeks, I am now 122, and my husband has dropped 15 lbs from his 204 he was up to, and we're still losing. I find that I'm more alert and ambitious now. Give it a try, and ignore any of the negative people out there, they obviously couldn't stick to the program, and were not motivated enough to hang in. Yes there is a problem with bad breath for a bit, but keep brushing those teeth, and you can have tic tacs (no carbs there), but you are forwarned about some of the side effects, ei. constipation, but I just took some sugar free fibre laxative like Konsyl which has the psyllium fibre in it, and even safe for diabetics. EXCELLENT DIET or better yet EXCELLENT WAY OF LIFE. ... Read more
