4-0 out of 5 stars fascinating contrast
The Quest audio cassettes are a fine compliment to books by the guest speakers. In some cases the cassettes provide nuances, insights, and clarification not possible in the printed text form. Stephen Covey for example has a deep raspy almost mischievous laugh when he discusses inauthenticity weakening relationships of trust. His sense of humor isn't readily apparent in The Seven Steps... bestseller, but here it is on this compilation. And Thomas Moore's few comments on narcisism are wonderfully refined and to the point, so much so that he does a better job conveying this somewhat difficult concept in speaking than in printed form i.e. "Care of the Soul" where there isn't the same impact. A few of the speakers are too New Agey and fluffy for my tastes but Moore and Covey give the nearly one hundred minutes of listening time great depth and texture.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterful tape---you must own all three in the series
Taken from a PBS series this is the first of three tapes to come from that effort. It is simple the best compilation of thought provking and stimulating ideas on tape that I have found. I am a counselor who works with adolescents and I am always looking for some way to inspire, motivate, or encourage young adults to begin the process of self knowledge and self awarness and to see beyond themselves into the world they are about to enter as adults. So many tapes are too simplistic or too complicated but this series seem to intrigue these individuals as no other tape I have used has been able to do. It is a series that anyone from early adolescents to geriatrics will find extremely valuable and thought provoking. No schmoltzy solutions, no formulaic set answers to life--just wonderful stimulating ways to encouarage the listener to examine who they are, what they feel and where they want to go. You will listen to this series over and over and will hear something new each and every time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual, real-world masterpiece
This piece is so heavy and so thought provoking that you have to absorb it slowly... just great. It takes you on a spiritual journey into fundamental questions about life and spirituality. But what really makes this compilation of ideas so good is that it offers you real answers, real solutions to your problems and human weaknesses that you can use. Listening to this tape is spiritual therapy. A classic, like nothing you've experienced before.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A thought-provoking guide to living better.
A "Whitman's sampler" from today's leading thinkers. By far the best self-help tape I've ever heard. What sets it apart is that it's full of undeniable truths. While other self-help tapes/gurus spend time trying to convince you that THEY have seen the master plan, this tape just dishes it out for you. Superb ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success"---- " revisited"
Knowing how to be spiritual is going to be our quest, for our future understanding depends on it. It's going back to our roots so to speak...from where we came...remember? If "Healing Society" by Dr Seung Heun Lee requests a spiritual awakening to accomplish our goal of "playing well together" to accomplish our higher purpose of peace on earth... who better than a wise and compassionate teacher, we know as Deepak Chopra, to tell and show us how to be this? Deepak generously leads us to a beautiful place where all we have to do is "be." Spirit is what we are... and love is who we are... and where we come from and then return to. What more can we desire? Maybe to revisit that perfect state from which we came, perhaps? Maybe everything is possible and simple. Maybe we should return to our innocence. In innocence we are fearless in our thoughts and actions...totally in tune with our inner self. Let's be beautiful spirit shared from our hearts where God lives. Read or reread "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of your Dreams and Deepak will give you the gift of your inner you...your "self"...dare to be beautiful!

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical and very fulfilling. A must read!
I have been going through a major turning point in my life and this book has allowed me to deal with my life's challenge in a very self fulfilling way. This is a must read for anyone wishing to find true inner peace and happiness. I wish I found this book 20 years ago! Read it every day and make it a fundamental part of your life. Self fulfillment will come when you practice the "Seven Spiritual Laws of Succcess". This book truly illuminates the heart, soul and mind

5-0 out of 5 stars "This existence of ours is as transient as autumn clouds."
It is always nice to find someone out there that thinks the same way you do, however express it much better.

In "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success", by Deepak Chopra, he describes the fundamental principles of the universe and how we as part of the universe can be successful. Throughout the book he has to slow sown and explain how he is using many of the words as we usually give them different meaning. Then there are a few times that he has to turn to Indian words instead of making up new ones. Many say he is based in Ancient Vedic concepts yet if you did not know of them you would relies these are concepts of the now.

He hits the deck running with this book so if you have not been exposed to these concepts before you may need to re-read the book several times. And this book was not meant to jus be read you need to practice the concepts to understand them. This book is based on "Creating Affluence" and does not have the size to contain a lot of background reasoning for drawing conclusions. Your practice off the laws will do that for you.

The concepts are too simple to give the titles any meaning however here they are.
1. The Law of Pure
The source of all creation is pure consciousness...
2. The Law of Giving
The universe operates through dynamic exchange...
3. The Law of "Karma" or Cause and Effect
Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind...
4. The Law of Least Effort
Nature's intelligence functions with effortless ease...

5. The Law of Intention and Desire
Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment...
6. The law of Detachment
In detachment lies the wisdom of uncertainty...
7. The law of "Dharma" or Purpose in life
Everyone has a purpose in life...

On a personal note it is so eerie that many of the things he talks about especially in the seventh law was the way me ad my siblings were raised. However I was 20 years old before cutting throw my first Veda

Be sure to also listen to the audio to here how he emphasizes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applying these laws has helped many...
...myself included.

I first read this book about 4 or 5 years ago when I began my journey towards discovering my Higher Self. This book is a great read no matter what religion (if any) you belong to. Honestly, the fundamental laws that lead to success in the game of life along all lines--health, wealth, peace of mind, love/relationships and true expression--are very simple but few of us are lucky to happen upon them. Then, for those who do, applying these laws consistently is something that even fewer of us do.

My favorite nugget of wisdom from this book is the follow:
"That which doesn't multiply through giving is neither worth giving nor receiving." (pg. 30)

I try to keep this insightful idea in mind when I consider not only finanacial and material concerns but my relationships and interactions with people as well.

I have read 3 of the author's books and this one is thus far my favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Laws Made simple
Chopra has manage once again to bring a lot of Eastern Philosophy to the west with a certain simplicity. He makes it easier to follow these principles in our everyday lives.Spirituality is everyday living and This book allows us to practice that!
Thank you Chopra for these insights ... Read more

Book Description

Who Moved My Cheese? is a simple parable that reveals profound truths about change. It is an amusing and enlightening story of four characters who live in a "Maze" and look for "Cheese" to nourish them and make them happy.

Two are mice named Sniff and Scurry. And two are "little people" -- beings the size of mice who look and act a lot like people. Their names are Hem and Haw.

"Cheese" is a metaphor for what you want to have in life -- whether it is a good job, a loving relationship, money, a possession, health, or spiritual peace of mind.

And "The Maze" is where you look for what you want -- the organization you work in, or the family or community you live in.

In the story, the characters are faced with unexpected change. Eventually, one of them deals with it successfully, and writes what he has learned from his experience on the maze walls.

When you come to see "The Handwriting on the Wall," you can discover for yourself how to deal with change, so that you can enjoy less stress and more success (however you define it) in your work and in your life.

Written for all ages, the story takes less than an hour to listen to, but its unique insights can last for a lifetime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Well worth your time
This little book is right up there on the New York Times best-seller list. A short read (one hour at most) on how to deal with change in your life.

Four mice named Sniff Scurry, Hem and Haw live in a Maze and look for cheese to nourish them to stay happy. The Maze is a metaphorical place where you look for what you want in life. The mice, it turns out, act like people and the cheese is a metaphor for whatever it is you want out of life.

In this charming story, the mice are faced with unexpected change because their cheese disappears. Some of the characters are able to deal successfully with this change and some are not. One of them (the successful one) writes about what he learns from this disaster on the walls of the Maze and thereby hangs the gist of this short, sweet tale. Among the "writings on the wall" are:

"If you do not change. you can become extinct." "What would you do if you weren't afraid?" "The quicker you let go of old cheese, the sooner you find new cheese." "Old beliefs do not lead you to new cheese." "Noticing small changes early helps you adapt to bigger changes that arc to come."

Well worth your time. Give a copy to your kids or grandkids. Promise (them money if thev read it, but make them write you a book report to prove they really read it...

4-0 out of 5 stars gourmet cheese between two slices of moldy bread
Who Moved My Cheese? is divided into three sections: A Gathering, The Story, and A Discussion.

The Story is about Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw, four unique characters who live in a maze and look for cheese to survive. When their familiar source of cheese dries up, each character handles the situation differently.

The Story on its own is brilliant -- a simple illustration that allows the reader to assess their own reaction to change in their life. It could almost be considered (alongside Dr. Seuss' Oh, the Places You'll Go!) as a classic primer for recent graduates, displaced employees or budding entrepreneurs who know that today there is no such thing as "job security".

Where this book falls apart is in A Gathering and A Discussion. These two sections assume that the reader is not smart enough to figure out The Story's metaphor on their own, and are jammed with shameless infomercial-type dialogue.

This book has great content if you stick to the middle section. Five stars for The Story, less one star each for A Gathering and A Discussion.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Modern Day Parable
Some people just don't get "Who Moved My Cheese?" This is prefectly acceptable, because it will not work for everybody. Just like biblical parables, it is often interpreted in different ways. If you have not read it, I suggest that you give it a chance.

I first encountered the book in graduate school and enjoyed it a great deal. Only recently, has my cheese been moved. Although prepared for my cheese to be moved, I find myself looking for my new cheese. The theme of the book deals with the adjustments or adaptations we must make in our lives periodically. All facets of life are really based in social darwinism, or survival of the fittest. While you may not like the book, you must agree that adaptation is the key to success and satisfaction in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best parable for dealing with change
I have read lots of books on change management. Most of them are dry and boring. This book shows you various reactions to change and how one arrives at the right response. How mice deal with supplies of cheese provides an entertaining and educational context for this topic. The book is well worth the investment. I would recommend reading it in conjunction with Optimal Thinking--How To be Your Best Self. Optimal Thinking is the "mental software" to make the most of any situation and will help you deal with all the emotions and thoughts that stop you from making the most of change.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding selection
This is a ourstanding book. The story or parable is set up to give the reader the information they can use to come up with a lesson for themselves. A story that we can all understand. You can almost let your children read it as a childrens book. That is how universal this book is. I've given away several copies of this book and everyone has found some value in it. I consider this to be one of the best Self help books out there. You might to. read and heed it. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A book about biographies, especially one's own
This book is as much about the search for character and calling as it is an elucidation of Hillman's neo-Jungian/neo-Platonist theory of psychology, termed the 'acron' theory. It is a very readable book, with a lot of biographical anecdotes from the lives of such a broad spectrum of famous personages as Churchill, Josephine Baker, and Yehudi Manheim. Because of this it is a joy to read, and succeeds in invoking a sense of one's own life story as an unfolding drama. One, moreover, that is seperate from the individual ego, and demands its outward manifestation at all costs. This is a well crafted book, and although sometimes quite theoretical, it never loses touch with the beauty of the biographical stories it invokes, and, in a larger sense, the drama of the individual soul desperate to bring its given talent into fruition. If you've never read Hillman this is a very good place to start. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars a refreshing antidote to reductionist, mainstream psychology
I am on my second reading of this book, having read it once a couple of years ago and let the ideas percolate in the back of my mind. It is one of the most liberating books I have ever read. As an adult survivor of child abuse, I was in therapy for over 16 years and never felt that mainstream psychologists have any idea of just how powerful our soul's nature is. A system of healing which leaves out our spiritual energies-- and our ability to transform our realities into the stuff of myth--is an impotent system, at least if you are someone whose roots run very deep. I made little progress in my own healing until I began working on the spiritual and soul aspects of my life. Hillman writes that we are not as shaped by the horrors of our early upbringing as we are told by psychotherapists. What an inspiration for transcending the past! Unlike authors such as Carolyn Myss, he offers this teaching in a way that does not blame people for their anger about the past. He simply offers a way beyond the anger and other self-imposed limits, cheerfully and graciously. The detractors of this book state that it is not scientific enough. Of course it is not scientific--it's about bringing the energies of the invisible into your life. You don't have to do reductionist studies of the principles involved to have them change your way of thinking about yourself... I recommend this book to anyone who is tired of the dry, sterile approach to healing offered by professional counselors who have not themselves explored the "realms beyond" and therefore cannot teach us how to experience them for our benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superb Book!
If your searching for something, looking for some direction, feel lost or depressed, this is a great book to read. It really provides a context from which to view you life from and COULD be all you need to get you back in the groove.

One does not have to agree with everything James Hillman covers in this study of character as vocation. I found the chapter on "The Bad Seed" particularly iffy; it seems as if imaginal psychology has not yet found a way to explain creatures like Hitler, to whom the epithet "human" hardly applies, or the fatal attraction they exert on others (read Elias Cannetti's "Crowds and Power" for that). However, I have always found his books challenging in that they shake one's most profound beliefs and prejudices about the nature of the psyche. And, given the current prevalence of "victim theory," it is absolutely necessary to have someone remind us that we have a free will, that the soul is sovereign, and that we cannot go around blaming fate, God, the devil or society for the negative aspects of our lives. I found that message in the Seth books by Jane Roberts many years ago. All in all, an important book for those who have left Freudian and Lacanian systems of thought, and have accepted imagination as the soul's predominant mode of knowledge.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas, bad execution
I was ready to like what Hillman had to say. The idea that we each have a calling -- some marriage of talent, interest and drive toward a specific destiny -- appeals to me. In fact, I liked many of Hillman's concepts (importance of beauty, the parental fallacy, over-medication of our youth, abandoning the 'invisibles,' having a vision for your children).

However, the execution was attrocious. Whenever I knew anything about the studies that Hillman was quoting, I found them to be twisted out of context. I showed the section on beauty to a friend who is writing a dissertation on aesthetics, and he (my friend) pointed out a number of mistakes. (For instance, Hillman quotes Thomas Aquinas saying that beauty arrests motion. What Aquinas actually says is that it is impossible to see true beauty in the world. He says that pure beauty is only present in God, the unmoved mover. So, while to see God would be to see a lack of motion, Hillman is really stretching Aquinas's words to use this philosphy to say that taking time for beautiful things would slow down our fast-paced lives and bring us inner peace.)

Also, I wanted more detail for some of his ideas. He never really tells us how to grow down or "feed" our individual daimon. In the final analysis, I would have liked better research, more focus on how to implement his principles, and perhaps less sarcasm about any other theory that doesn't agree with his. ... Read more

I think this is a best idea for Self Hypnosis. Each Script starts with relaxation then Visualisation & then suggestion.

This is Great, like using the power of your own voice for your better life.I was wondering Why I didnt got this idea before?

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm amazed, this really works!
In this book, you are provided with several self hypnosis "scripts" to record onto a tape, in your own voice. I recorded the weight loss script a little over a week ago, and I, an avid chocoholic, have not had a bite of chocolate since! I'm no longer snacking between meals, I'm not tempted by sweets, and I couldn't be happier. There is at least one script in this book for everyone. The wording is wonderful, very positive, and extremely effective. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What my daddy said.
When I was little my daddy would always say, "Cammy. There's three kind of people in this here world. Them's that makes things happen. Them's that watches things happen. And them's that wonders what the heck just happened. Make sure you're always them of first kind." That was good advice. Thanks, Dad.

I'm sure it was my daddy's philosophy that led me to this book. The ten golden rules, according to McGraw, are: (He calls them "life laws".)
#1: You either get it, or you don't. Become one of those who gets it.

#2: You create your own experience. Acknowledge and accept accountability for your life.

#3: People do what works. Identify the payoffs that drive your behavior and that of others.

#4: You cannot change what you do not acknowledge. Get real with yourself about your life and everybody in it.

#5: Life rewards action. Make careful decisions and then pull the trigger.

#6: There is no reality; only perception. Identify the filters through which you view the world.

#7: Life is managed; it is not cured. Learn to take charge of your life.

#8: We teach people how to treat us. Own, rather than complain about how people treat you.

#9: There is power in forgiveness. Open your eyes to what anger and resentment are doing to you.

#10: You have to name it before you can claim it. Get clear about what you want and take your turn.

As you can see my daddy was right on the money. For an uneducated man he was pretty dang smart.

Daddy said it. Lee Ann Womack sang it in her hit song "I Hope You Dance", "...And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. Dance . . . I hope you dance." And now Phillip McGraw writes it. Be proactive, rather than reactive. A great book for anyone who is searching to take charge of their life. Cammy Diaz-Lawyer

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Food for Thought
Each of us has the power to make those decisions which ultimately determine the course of our precious lives. We have the power of choice....a power that must be used wisely.

"Life Strategies" is one of those rare finds, a self-help book that does not wallow in big words or esoteric concepts. Mr. McGraw outlines his steps for success in life in simple, direct, yet engagingly written chapters. The organization of the book is excellent throughout and reflects an author who has had extensive experience in dealing with people from all walks of life. He deals with concepts such as self-reliance, individual responsibility and similar notions often downplayed (or ignored outright) by other authors seeking to play into the culture of victimization. You will find none of that in Mr. McGraw's book; his main theme is that we are responsible for our own lives and we do not have to allow ourselves to be knocked about like a punching bag on a windy day.

Once you pick up the book, it is difficult to put down; you will find yourself nodding your head at what you have always known in your heart, but do not always acknowledge in your daily life. This book is well worth the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not as easy as it looks on tv
Dr. Phil's life strategies seem easy, but they take a true commitment to implement. His advice makes some readers angry, but that is probably an indication that the message of the book is getting straight the the point. As Dr. Phil would say, "You either get it or you don't!" I also found Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maza of Life by JoAnna Carey full of practical, easy to implement tips for getting what you want out of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Real!!!!
This is a great audio book. Eventhough I had this book for years but I didn't read it until I got the audiobook. I enjoy Dr. Phil's texan accent!
There are somethings that I do not agree with, like everything that happens in life is your own responsibility, but generally it is a constructive book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Advice
The subtitle hints of the practicality of this book: "Doing what works/Doing what matters." Time is a key element in the process of accomplishing what you set out to do. Dr. Phil writes, "I design plans to help get people what they want in life."

There are some places in the book that are...shall we say they reveal things about him that he didn't intend. For example he's quite obsequious toward Oprah. Perhaps because she catapulted him to fame. On the other hand he's condescending to other people. He doesn't realize he comes across this way in the book, quite obviously. His arrogance is alarmingly apparent in places.

But there are some insights to be found in spite of these weaknesses. For example, he encourages you to "focus on results, not intentions." Do people ever need to hear that! A similar insight is found when he points out people fear rejection, but need acceptance. That means life is a risk.

I particularly liked this sieze windows of opportunity discussion in chapter six. Again time is the relevant variable, i.e., certain opportunities have a limited window. Sieze the day or miss the chance forever.

To sum it up, I felt the book started weak but grew in substance. After the self-promotion and sense of having all the answers in the first few pages were over he developed some substantive thought on significant issues. ... Read more

Book Description

One of the primary problems is that we've forgotten who we really are. We think we are defined by our accomplishments, our mistakes, our addictions, and our limitations. But we are much more than our outward appearances. Marianne tells us, and we must change our perceptions of ourselves - and others - in order to achieve the inner peace and happiness we all seek.

Growth is messy, says Marianne, but we should welcome the upheaval that change engenders because the situaions that bring out the worst in us are the only ones that can heal us. And as we heal the world around us - which at times can seem so dark and terrifying - is healed as well. Once we've trained our minds to percieve ourselves differently, our whole world view will be transformed as well.

We do not need the approval or validation of others, but only from ourselves.

I had just been out of a relationship and going through hard times. In my search for true happiness, I came across this particular cassette. This cassette made me realize that true happiness lies within us and how dependent we become on other people for our happiness. I recommend this to anyone going through difficult times or not. It's a lecture that helps you find inner peace and who you really are.

Book Description

Rooted in traditional Toltec beliefs, these four agreements are essential steps on the path to personal freedom: Be impeccable with your word; Say only what you mean; The word is the most powerful tool humans have; Don't take anything personally; Self-importance leads people to think they are the center of the universe, causing pain and injustice; Don't make assumptions. To avoid frustration and blame, ask what is meant; Always do your best. This is the surest way to avoid self- condemnation, though it is important to realize one's best is always changing. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No Hocus Pocus.
So many "self-help" books are pure rhetorical tripe. Common sense, good manners, and sensible actions regurgitated. In "The Four Agreements," Ruiz does not break new ground but the simplistic and thoughtful nature of his message make this book a winner.

Let's face it, experience and iteration (practice) will propel one toward their stated goals with certainty. To point, the four agreements, as simple as they may be, are tantamount to successful achievement of personal and/or professional goals:

1) Be impeccable with your word - keep your word or your reputation will fail.
2) Don't take anything personally - tough act to muster at times but possible (besides, its good for the soul).
3) Don't make assumptions - those who assume will lose the benefit of fact and learning; check your facts--learn what is necessary.
4) Always do your best - this is the most simplistic of the agreements but one that we all have a tendency, at one time or another, to allow to lapse; if you decide to undertake something, make it YOURS!

So many people who read books such as this or "Who Moved My Cheese" (self-help genre) attempt to pick apart the conceptual nature of the message whether simple or complex. Certainly, many books of this ilk are not worth the paper they're written on but when you find a message that speaks to your intellectual being as well as your soul, you'd better listen. Riuz's message is poignant; follow these simple rules and create your own happiness.

This isn't a "cure-all" book. If you read it without concurrent introspection, then you've done nothing more than read a short book espousing basic vitues. However, if one reads this book with an open mind and the congruous search for excellence, this will be a truly powerful experience. If one does not, then one has lost the message behind the words. Don't read the WORDS, absorb the MESSAGE!

Jump in, both feet. You'll not be sorry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Ancient wisdom for modern days.
What a great book! "The Four Agreements" flows with a simplicity and honesty that caught my attention. I came away from this book feeling more at ease in myself. Perhaps the most powerful passage in the book for me was "Death is not the biggest fear we have; our biggest fear is taking the risk to be alive -- the risk to be alive and express what we really are." I hadn't looked at this idea before, and when I checked with myself I found it to be true. Miguel Ruiz's book does a great job of describing the process through which we lose sight of our true selves. After that, Ruiz outlines the four agreements you can make with yourself to have a fulfilling life. They are simple and powerful and they can make a a great difference in the quality of your life.

Gladly enough, when I found this book on Amazon and read the reviews to check it out, I saw a review for another book which I bought as well. It is Ariel and Shya Kane's "Working of Yourself Doesn't Work: A Book About Instantaneous Transformation." This book is about having a magnificent life and nothing less. And while it seems too good to be true, I found that the three principles of transformation the Kanes talk about touched me so profoundly that I HAVE discovered my own magnificence. No kidding! Just by being in the moment, life becomes magical. By becoming aware of the mechanical behaviors that keep us out of the moment, we regain our original freedom. My work is easier and I feel more connected to the people in my life. Read this book and the presence of the Kanes will seep through and you'll feel how true and powerful their words are, and how deeply they care about people and about the often-missed possibility of living with immeasurable joy, wellness, relationship, and satisfaction.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Agreements for Life
This is a beautifully written book coming from the sincere and simple yet profound wisdom that will help many people if applied. I found this to be among the few books I have purchased where the solutions for humanity are filled with compassion, inspiration and expansive wisdom as well as compassion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas..remedial delivery...
I enjoyed the book, but it was very repetitive and a little simplistic. Lots nifty ideas with a few interesting metaphors and insights... The book doesn't provide many revelations (if any). It mostly serves to re-enforce what we already know is right and true. We've all heard a million versions of the ideas delivered in this book. Stuff like:

"Say what you mean. Mean what you say"
"Assuming makes an ASS out of U and ME"

You get the idea... Read this book as a reminder. Read it to gain an alternate perspective. I would recommend it to anyone who is on a path to self-discovery. Remedial or not, the toltec perspective referenced in this book is a valuable one...

One thing I've noticed about most of the negative reviews. They all seem a little bit angry. Perhaps too angry to be receptive to a book with such a positive spin...

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Making Assumptions
By implementing the four agreements into my daily life I have been transformed. I took back my power by being able to 'see' other peoples parasite when it was exposed to me. I have been handling every situation in my life now with one of the agreements. I also recommend reading Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life by JoAnna Carey. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of The Best ! !
Dr. Phil's "Ultimate Weight Solution" is one of the best weight loss books I've read in a long time. I'm giving this book four stars because weight loss should encompass the full gamut of an individual including spirit, soul, and body. Dr. Phil covers the soul and body beautifully, but neglects the spiritual aspects of weight loss.

Keys one and two deal with the soul which is our thoughts, will, and emotions. Keys 3-6 deal with the body and flesh, and key 7 deals with the soul. It is critical to include the missing spiritual aspect of a complete weight loss program.

Dr. Phil does an excellent job of dealing with the seven keys included in this book. There are lots of nuggets to glean from.

Two of my many favorite golden nuggets of truth in this book are:

1. "If you believe with utmost certainty that you will fail and never, ever, be able to manage your weight, then failure is what your personal truth dictates to you." Pg 11

2. "When you weight train, its like taking a little chisel to your body. Off comes blubbery thigh fat, gone is the jiggly butt. There's muscular definition to your arms you never knew you had. You're firm all over, and smaller, and better proportioned too." Pg 222

The inclusion of the questionnaires such as the "Nutritional Assessment," the "Behavioral Audit," and the "Personal Environment Audit" are powerful ways of getting the reader to personalize this book and their own personal weight loss program. The interaction leads people to draw closer to the words on the pages and to internalize the keys.

There is so much good material in this book that I really wanted to include a dozen nuggets of truth, but you'll just have to read it yourself and pick out your own favorite nuggets.

I thank Dr. Phil for writing this book. It was a combination of this book coupled with his Monday television program that motivated me to get started on my own weight loss journey.

Thank you Dr. Phil!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hello, this book is about reality (self help not diet)
I can not believe the negativity of some of these reviews. Dr. Phil may not be super thin but the book is about a get real weight not a doctor's chart weight. It is the pursuit of the model thin body that has contributed to both obesity and eating disorders in this country. I do not think that Dr Phil is fat. I think that he is about average for a man of his age (remember televison adds weight). Anyone picking on Dr. Phil's weight is part of the problem ( it really is OK not to look like a super model in this country, it doesn't make you worth less) Also, so what if he is a psychologist and not a psychiatrist. That just means in private practice he would not prescribe meds. It does not mean he is not qualified to talk about the psychological issues surrounding permanent weight loss. Anyone questioning the qualifications of Dr. Phil are just jealous of the impact he has on people.

So it is not brain surgery. Have you ever been to a psychiatrist? They always shift the focus back on you. You ask why do I do that, they say, I don't know why do you?. Because for permanent change the self control and motivation must come from you. This book tackles the fact that we are eating emotionally not just for sustenance as we should be. It tries to resolve some of these issues if not at least bring them out into the open. It has several excercises for this. We all know that to lose weight we must eat less than we need for energy. The real question is why don't we? What is the emotional reason that you as an individual keep overeating? This is the first diet book that tackles overeating from a psychological perspective. Perhaps people would feel like they got their money's worth if the book said to stand on your head 10 minutes after eating and eat as much as you want. That would be new wouldn't it?

Dr. Phil talks in a plain and simple language that really appeals to his fans. IN both self matters and this book he puts things in such a way that it cuts through the bull. If you don't like Dr Phil's style, you won't like the book. Since the book has sold 7 million copies so far he has an opportunity to make a real impact on the weight loss problem in this country. Imagine that !! Millions of overweight americans finally looking inside themselves and saying, "I am the one making the decision to be fat. I do it for the following reasons. I can change my mind and live a healthier lifestyle". "It is not because I ate a bread product with a piece of fruit and messed up a combination or magical formula, It is because I eat more than I need to, to survive. This is not normal and thanks to Dr. Phil I have an action plan to change my behavior." It puts control back in the hands of the individual. Simple or not, if he can get that message across and through his star power effect change, all the more power to him.

1-0 out of 5 stars He's good at stating the obvious. That's about it.
Why is Dr. Phil popular? Because he tells people what they already know. He just throws a few "I'm a good ol' down-to-earth no-nonsense Texan" sayings into the mix.
I bought this book because I was a huge fan of Dr. Phil. I watched his show, bought his "Relationship Rescue" and his Food Guide, and I was ready to overhaul my life just like he said. I started into the book, made goals and worked hard, and followed his food guide implicitly. He said I wouldn't be hungry. I was. He said the plan wouldn't be restrictive. It was. After the first days of excitement were over, I was miserable.
This book is all about telling you to work hard at losing weight, which I am all for. But then he tells you it's not about will power. Of course it is! It's not only about will power, but you do have to have some self-control in order to reach your goals.
This book is a paradoxical mixture of in-your-face drill sargent with telling 'em what they wanna hear.
Let's just say that the more I see Dr. Phil's milk-mustached face on billboards and watch his appearances on the likes of "Extreme Makeover", the more I start to doubt his sincerity about helping people and suspect him of milking his popularity for every penny he can.

4-0 out of 5 stars at last............
What Dr. Phil's book plainly and simply points to is that there is no quick fix to weight loss.
One person wrote about how scary it is that Dr. Phil's book content is common sense. Yes it is and it is high time someone put it in blunt, plain language.
The trouble is the diet industry has been harping on easy loss forever and loves to woo the mentality "I lost 15 pounds in one week!". If you lost 15 pounds in 7 days, it is NOT fat, it is fluid, and more troubling, lean tissue, something that no one can afford to lose. It is called starvation in many sectors of the world.
You simply cannot fool the body. If it does not get what it needs it cannibalizing itself to get it.
The diet industry also makes us believe in 'dieting' not in making behavior changes for a lifetime in what we eat and how much time we spend moving our bodies. When we diet we think about when it is all off I can let up. Well they are wrong. It is a lifetime of effort and Dr. Phil let's his reader know that.
I am perfectly happy with the thought that finally someone has had the intestinal fortitude to spell it out plainly how much we have been duped by the 'diet' industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life!!!!
Most people think I'm crazy when I tell them that this book has changed my life, but it has. My eating habits have completely changed and I'm not even finished reading the book. I have lost 6 pounds in about 2 weeks. The book doesn't make you lose weight. It's the information inside that gives you the tools to lose the weight. I strongly suggest that anyone buy it. I bought it at a store full price and was a little leary of spending the money, but it was WELL WORTH IT! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book turned a practical person into a creative one
This book has completely changed my perspective about my creative ability. At first my practical side felt very silly doing some of the exercises. But after a while a began to realize how much better I felt about myself and my ability to be creative... not do everything by the book. I began oil painting, which I've even entered into contests. I went to Professional Culinary School, in spite of everyone telling me I was crazy. Now those same people are envious of my ability and attitude to discover something that makes me happy and actually pursue it. So many people dream, but never act on those dreams. As practical as I am and probably always will be, thanks to this book, I'm happy that I'm taking these steps toward self fullfillment, and I've established a balance in my life I have never previously experienced. My only criticism is all of the references to God. I'm not athiest, however I feel strongly that the motivation comes from a higher power within yourself and is in your control, and should not be limited to an association with a particular religious figure. Not everyone believes in God, like another individual has written in this review section. I could see how the constant references could turn someone off. But if you look past that element of the book there are some real powerful tools that can help anyone become a more creative individual. The religious connotations are not really necessary. If you can keep that in perspective, then I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Release your creativity
There are only two books I recommend artists of any kind to read, Natalie Goldberd "Writing Down the Bones", and this book by Julia Cameron. I have read more how-to creativity/writing/journaling/artist books than my poor shelves can hold. I stopped buying them after this book.

I'm an avid journal keeper, it helps me free my mind. There are times, however, when my mind wants to remain locked. This book, complete with freeing exercises, changed all that. I keep the morning pages every day now and have little trouble with my creativity. This book was a god-send to a generation who finally realized that all things in life require some creativity and that unlocking it is the key to a healthy, fullfilled, and well-lived life.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I also recommend the companion "Morning Pages Journal", but only if you aren't sure where to begin. If you are certain you can pick up a blank notebook and begin following the advice she gives, then the journal isn't really necessary.

This is the book that every artist and journaler needs.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Artists Detour
This is one of those rare books that just tries to adress everything; creativity, spiritualty, pop psychology, twelve step program views, and the kitchen sink. It is about everything and ultimately about nothing. It reders the reader at odds with himself rather than provide a "path." It is actually counterproductive.

A truly ghastly book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought I was the only one unimpressed
Thank Goodness there is an objective review of this book that doesn't consider it the new bible for artists. About a year ago my professor recommended this book to me. I dutifully struggled with the first few chapters, reading about supposed case histories of others who miraculously found themselves and God with the author's assistance. However, as a working artist, (generally about 16 hours a day), my time must be spent productively. Inspiration can be found in raindrops, fresh air, flower petals, insects, sunshine, snowflakes, and all of God's creations. Instead of writing a journal in the morning, I suggest working seriously at whatever "art" the person aspires to: story writing, painting, music. Explore the art, if nothing else, and inspiration will come if it is supposed to. The original "Bible" is still the best spiritual guide and not a book obviously padded with worthless "case histories" that may have been invented by the author.
Remember the child who bravely pointed out "The Emperor has no clothes?" Be advised, this book has no substance. I wish I had glanced at it in a bookstore before wasting my money.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my whole life
I was an unfulfilled woman before this book. My life had a constant sadness flowing though the everyday. Some one bought me this book as a present and it took me a year till I opened it. I don't mean to be extreme but this was like the Bible to my artistic true self. I have referred to it since over and over and have recommended it to so many people. My favorite quote from the book is "leap and the net will appear". Also, I love the one that talks about the woman who asks how old she will be when she can finally play the piano well and the answer was- "the same age you would be had you not ever learned".
That struck such a chord for me. I was in my late 20's at the time thinking that I had made all my choices all ready, and was stuck with them. As Oprah would say, that was my "Aha" moment.

As a result of the book I changed my group of friends because I realizes they were not there to help push me up and forward.
I bought singing lessons on CD- "Voice Lessons To GO", by Vaccarino (excellent) because I just always have wanted to be able to sing.
I did a Berlitz language course in Italian and spent a summer there after taking an art class.
I found an excellent husband with my newly-empowered self. We even bought "New Sex Now Video" and have explored the gamut- because I am worth it.
And in general, I have happiness now flowing through my days instead of sadness.
Morning pages have brought me clarity.
There is another quote I like from the real bible, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If not now, when? ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Men Are Simple Creatures, All They Need Is ...
In this book, Dr. Laura presents what could be called the "Contemporary Theory of Husbands." She tries to encourage women to cast off the influence of the feminist movement which has fostered feelings that have allowed women to use their time in non-productive men-bashing, rather than in trying to analyze what they really want, and how to get it.

Dr. Laura states the following, "Remember, men are simple creatures and very dependent on their wives for acceptance, approval and affection." Her basic theory being, that if men get that from their wives, their wives will get back many fold, what they give. And also, Dr. Laura wishes that woman would analyze carefully what they have because of their husbands and what they want out of life, and make the decision based on those factors.

While her theory is surely not neo-Freudian or neo-Jungian, it has a very high potential to work in present day marital situations. She stresses the need for honest and meaningful communication. And she tries to point out the reality, that a successful marriage is hard work, and both partners have responsibilities within the relationship.

Dr. Laura simplifies a lot of the problems and answers, but unlike test data in a lab, Dr. Laura's evidence actually comes from empirical field data by helping real people sort these things out on her radio show, and through letters and her other activities.

It should be clearly stated, that Dr. Laura does NOT advocate being a stay at home mom, but she does advocate the concept that women are more responsible for child rearing than men. In addition, she states that the woman should have more responsibility in a marriage than a man, to provide the things that the man wants, and to be the leader in productive and meaningful communication. This is arguable. Both parties really have some responsibility to this in a marital relationship.

I found Dr. Laura's commentary on embryology and "hard wired" genetic differences between men and women, which start at about 8 weeks into gestation in the womb. There is considerable evidence to suggest, that all of us, are born with both male and female "hard-wiring" but the hard wiring that is expressed, is that which is activiated by the particular hormonal mix running through the veins of the specific person. Thus, it has been shown in hundreds or animal studies and now, with transexuality, that if one changes the hormonal balance, that an animal will act in normal programmed ways as would the opposite sex, and that really it is the hormones that control the "hard-wiring" that is selected and displayed, not so much the physical equipment.

Dr. Laura addresses some other highly relevant subjects in her book, perhaps the most important of which in marriage are the issues of "sex" and "guy time." She does a wonderful job of exploring this with support of her listeners conversations and letters.

If there is anything at all that Dr. Laura could have done a little better at, was that I think she went slightly overboard on the concept of "repition brings remembrance." Her book often goes over the same point or concept in multiple places. But I know, that this was intentionally done by Dr. Laura.

In all, the book is a wonderful book for both men and women, as it helps both understand the other, and work at productive and happy marriages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Laura sparks a needed debate
Dr. Laura's new book is an irrefutable home run on modern relationships. Like any other book, it won't save your marriage or make you a better person. Self-help books either preach to the choir or fly above heads, depending on the reader. And I expect that it will do the latter with most women. That, I think, is exactly the point.

For the first time ever a mainstream book takes an honest look at the dark side of things feminine. It is a long overdue examination that forces us past the taboo of saying anything critical about women. Women, just like men, DO have a dark side. In western culture that dark side is reflected in many women's sense of entitlement, arrogance and selfishly driven behavior, even in an area of their lives that should be characterized by giving, respect and the pursuit of intimacy.

The subject material of her book, even on this list of reviews, has elicited powerful feelings on both sides. And this is where she succeeds, regardless of the books efficacy for it's intended purpose. Some of the reviews drip with vitriol and the very loathing of men that Dr. Laura cautions us against. How DARE Dr. Laura imply that women are any less than perfect?! Who is she to say that healthy relationships require women to act like accountable, feeling and sensitive adults?!

Personally, I think Dr. Laura has a great deal of wisdom, but it is wasted on women who have grown far too comfortable with blaming every negative thing in their lives on men.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information
Having been through two divorces I have a bit of experience in the failed marriage business and I read this book with interest to see if I spotted any similarities between the authors advice to married women and the behaviors I experienced in my bad marriages. Spot on. Bingo. It's here. I give the book a strong recommendation to any looking to strengthen their marriage or to any planning on getting married.

It's easy for some to vilify Dr. Laura but if you (as a woman) have ever been successfully married you've either followed her advice or you weren't all that happily married (or at least your husband was miserable). She makes it very clear that the book isn't written for relationships that are abusive and that in normal non-abusive relationships men are actually very similar and pretty much want the same things in their marriages: the respect of their wives, lots of physical intimacy and a good home from their children.

As for the overall quality of the book and the writing, I'd say it's about average. It is a short book and a lot of it is filler, quotes, examples and stories. I read it in a few hours and did find it entertaining as well as informative. In defense of the authors style and the length of the book, I'd like to point out that to help the average person, a book can't be to long and complicated, it simply won't get read, so overall, I'd not say the length and style are a detriment. My biggest complaint was that it simply ended, there wasn't a conclusion or final chapter, the last chapter was just the last chapter.

As for those people, women or men, that can't stand the idea of a wife respecting and honoring her husband, loving him and caring for him, it's fine if you feel that way as a single person but you're setting yourself up for a failed marriage if you think somehow you're so special that the laws of human nature and the spirit of man are somehow unique in your situation. They aren't. I highly highly recommend this book to anyone that's engaged or thinking about it. If you think the book is bunk, don't get marriage yet, at least not to a man...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great title, great book!
This is an easy to read, easy to implement guide for women who want a great relationship. Dr. Laura draws from the letters and call-ins she receives on her radio show and the book is full of quotes of these letters and dialogues she had with listeners. And it is easy to recognize yourself in those people?

Dr. Laura's advice is really simple: Take responsibility for your relationship, realize the power you have and use it wisely. Make your husband your number one priority and the rewards will be manifold. It almost sounds too simple, but the many examples in the book provide clear support that this works and why.

The book illustrates how many women have fallen into the feminist trap of demanding "to have it all" without realizing the price they pay for pursuing too many things, for ignoring their husbands for the sake of their career, or for reducing their husband to a tool to support their dreams, rather than creating and maintaining a true partnership that feeds both of them.

One warning: Dr. Laura is a strong advocate of the traditional marriage with a stay-at-home wife and children. So it is easy for any woman who does not fall into that pattern to ignore what she says. That would be a shame. The essence of her book remains true, no matter what your personal circumstances are: Focus on your husband's needs rather than have all attention on yourself, give instead of demanding to receive, and your partnership will fly.

Another book that I have found extremely insprirational and insightful is "Working on your Relationship Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane. They have a refreshing new perspective on how heretofore unidentified influences in our environment, if they go unrecognized, can destroy our relationships and how you can nurture and grow your relationships ? with your partner, yourself, co-workers, friends, family ? in a way that doesn?t take time or effort and allows magic to unfold. They suggest that the mere seeing of things allow them to transform, without working on them. What a relief? and worth trying!

I don't know one person in the world who won't date his moments of greatest happiness to the time his family was the most intact, whole, unshakable. To me, this book (despite its mildly salacious title) was about that subtle nuance of marriages that guides life to be fitted around duty and responsibility, rather than around the pursuit of that elusive straw man, happiness. It nearly makes one wish that there was someone a bit more hip and compelling than the author of this book standing up for this simple hardhitting truth, because the point is compelling. Regardless of its title or whatever polarized commentary you hear about its contents, this book is a very worthy skim. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Uplifting Tribute to our Animal Friends
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a sucker for a good animal story. If it's happy, I cry; if it's sad, I cry harder. Animal abuse distresses me almost more than anything else.

One of my pleasures is to pick up every book I can on animals and the psychic realm. The books that focus on our intimate connections to the animal kingdom and how we may communicate with them through our intuitive thoughts and feelings are books to not only to learn from, but to savor.

I remember that pioneer in the field, Beatrice Lydecker, whose book was revolutionary when it came out years ago. It was "What the Animals Tell Me", and I was thrilled this work was available to us. The fact that there are so many books about this subject on the market now testifies to the fact that as a people we are really ready to hear the wisdom and love that animals offer. They are not just a food source or slave labor to us any longer.

Ms. McElroy does a beautiful job of bringing forth her message of healing the relationship between people and animals. She comes from a most compassionate, wise place in her understanding of why animals are with us as our companions.

If you want an example of unconditional love, be in the presence of a beloved pet. Never have I, in my life, ever received even close to that level of unconditional love and acceptance that my animal companions have shown me. [Particularly my recently deceased, Francis, who was a very evolved being inhabiting a humble life form. I am planning a future book on this soul.]

Animals are helping us evolve to the realization of our Oneness universe. We are taught by them that there is no separation between us and them. They feel what we feel. They see the spiral of life and death as part of the Wholeness of life.

The author goes into several different topics: animals as guides or guardians, healers, in the dream state or shamanic state, and through the death process. There is no dead weight in this book---all is riveting, and should be read more than once through.

Most highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animals as Teachers and Healers
This is the Best book that I have read and I have read quite a few books. I purchased this book in a train station in Washington, DC because I had a long time between trains returning to Pittsburgh from North Carolina. After I started reading this book, I could not stop. I read most of it in the train station and finished it when I arrived home. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the various stories about the animals. When I read some stories, I cried because of what happened to the animals. In some of the stories, animals risked their own lives to save a human life. I love animals very much and for anyone who loves animals, this is the book to read. The author, Susan Chernak McElroy is an exceptional writer and I would purchase any book she writes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful tribute to animals
Susan McElroy has put together a most memorable book. It expresses the beautiful relationships and experiences people have had with animals in a way that deeply touches the heart. I could not read this book with a dry eye. Having grown up with many animals, I have long been an animal lover. Reading about the moving experiences that others have had with animals confirmed the feeling that I have often had that we are connected with them on a deeper than conscious level. This book accords animals the honor they deserve.

5-0 out of 5 stars Animals as Teachers and Healers
As an avid animal lover, I found Susan Chernok McElroy's book to be none other than touching and heartfelt. The material she used for her writings was a great teacher and healer in of itself for me, the reader.Every story leapt off the page and affected me deeply, evoking any number of a myriad of emotions ... joy, sorrow, relief, suspense, laughter. When I finished the book (which I did quickly), I felt more inspired than I had in a long time to make the earth's animal kingdom a greater and more important part of my life, whether by working for its welfare/well-being, or simply by giving my own pets more of the love they need and deserve!I plan to give this book to every animal lover I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuing the Roles of Animals in our Lives
The author, Susan McElroy, uses her successful fight against cancer as the backdrop for this inspirational work. She credits her animal companions for much of the strength and wisdom she needed to be a cancer survivor.

McElroy's way of combining stories and analyzing them makes this more than just a collection of sweet pet stories. It helps you recognize the important role animals play in our lives. The inspiration, hope, love and of course bittersweet emotions we've all felt with our animals are all stirred up when reading this book. She also devotes time to the wild animals that touch our lives, even if just fleetingly.

Animals as Teachers and Healers is highly recommended for everyone who's life has been changed by the love of an animal. ... Read more

A Complete Course in Healing Trauma Through Your Body

Are you experiencing physical or emotional symptoms that no one is able to explain? If so, you may be suffering a traumatic reaction to a past event, teaches Dr. Peter A. Levine. Medical researchers have known for decades that survivors of accidents, disaster, and childhood trauma often endure life-long symptoms ranging from anxiety and depression to unexplained physical pain and harmful "acting out" behaviors. As a young stress researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, Levine found that all animals, including humans, are born with a natural ability to rebound from these distressing situations.

On Healing Trauma, this respected therapist and teacher brings you face to face with his effective new treatment – not a "talking" cure, but a deep physiological process for releasing your past traumas and instilling a harmonious awareness of your body. Drawing on nature’s lessons, Dr. Levine teaches you each of the essential principles of his four-phase process. You will learn how and where you are storing unresolved distress; how to become more aware of your body's physiological responses to danger; and specific methods to free yourself from trauma.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, over 23 million Americans suffer from anxiety disorders – many as a direct result of trauma. Now, you can learn how to address these and other symptoms at their source – your body – and return to the natural trauma-free state that you were meant to live in. Over nine hours of instruction to free yourself from trauma through your body’s built-in healing process. This program includes a 24-page study guide.

- A revolutionary method for releasing trauma, taught step by step
- Nature's lessons – the physiological roots of your emotions
- How to determine if you are suffering the effects of trauma
- Where trauma hides in your body and how to release it
- Specific exercises to "thaw" frozen physiological energies
- Coping with surgeries, accidents, illnesses, and other stressful events
- Emergency "first-aid" measures for emotional distress. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Begin to heal
Two years ago, I suffered respiratory failure. I was placed in a coma and paralysis for five weeks in hopes to prevent brain death / death. I lived, but have suffered an atrophied muscles, osteoporosis ( I'm a 50 year old male) and neural damage and since the trauma, I have suffered tremendous pain throughout my body. So far, no doctor, no medical testing have been able to relieve the pain or even find a cause.
I truly was contemplating suicide. My only alternative was to see if I could control the pain with my mind.
On the advise of a counselor, I borrowed this eight tape set. No matter what you have had happened to cause the trauma, I sincerely recommend this tape series! Peter Levine has a series of exercises and case studies that in some manner will be able to help victims of trauma to relieve the pain emotionally or physically.
I can't promise you 100% relief. But the series helped me.
The tape series describes some of Levine's cases, the trauma and the aftermath for each patient. What I found was (despite what the trauma was) that the patients thoughts and healing processes were appropriate to what I felt in my own situation.
I wouldn't suggest that the tape series is the stand alone cure for the traumatic incidents in everyone's lives. But, would HIGHLY recommend it as a helpful tool in conjunction with other treatment, be it medical or mental health.
I listen to these tapes when I need some extra emotional support to get through especially painful times.

5-0 out of 5 stars Refreshing insights
These tapes are for everyone. He addresses heavy duty physical trauma as well as everyday stress. It incorporates past and present experience. This audio cassette draws on meditations that I have become used to from psychology, but the wonderful difference is the author's explanation of trauma in biological terms. Animals have natural responses to stress and attack. (I particularly was interested in his explanation of immobilization as a biological defense.) Animals also have natural ways of coming out of trauma. I now have a biological context for what I once only knew as abstract psychological truths. I understand my own personal immobilization as a healthy biological defense rather than as some sort of psychic deficiency. Understanding this helps me come out of immobilization at a physical level. I am grateful to these cassettes for this insight. ... Read more

The purpose of this CD is to increase your ability to successfully deal with the challenges of living and to decrease how much you go into high stress states. Positive stress states are actually quite healthy. We usually call them excitement, joy, exuberance and natural high. Three things are usually going on in a natural stress state:

* Your inner mind, the unconscious mind, truly believes that you are in physical danger and nothing is being done about it, you're trapped,
* The body is in a state of tension, anxiety, and biochemical imbalance,
* You are overwhelmed with too much information, too much input and too much output. What we need to do is learn to operate in the stress level that is most effective with what we are doing.

Stress management involves how our mind operates, how our body operates, and what our environment is like. This program will help you do it. However only you can take charge of the stress levels in your life. Give it respect, invest in yourself, it is something to work on everyday. Dr. Illig addresses self image and guides the listener to relases excess worries. He is careful to note that certain amouts or types of stress are useful and that the listerner is in control. I haven't finished the 30 day cycle but can say that I do envision contnuing with the CD. I found this tape stashed away in a relatives closet, when we were cleaning. It was mixed with some other tapes made by Dr. David Illig, but it was well worn. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Resource for an Attitude Adjustment
Maxwell has written an excellent book encouraging readers to change their attitudes so they may experience more personal success. While the book is admittingly from an evangelical Christian perspective, anyone can benefit from the material.

Among the points covered include:

1.7 aspects fo attitudes and how they can affect your life.
2.God thinks more of us than we do ourselves.
3.Do not allow your attitude or others to put you in a box and limit your potential.
4.4 rules to remember when you have attitude problems.
5.Failures can be the road to our success - it is impossible to succeed without failure.
6.4 outward causes of attitude problems.
7.8 choices we can make to improve our attitude.
8.5 types of opportunities we have to change our attitude.
9.3 strengths we have for change.
10. 5 things to learn from prayer in Psalm 25:1-10.

Earlier reviewers are put off by Maxwell's "preaching".What do you expect? He was a preacher when he wrote the book!!!It still amazes me that people are still so hypersensitive to whenever Christianity and the Bible are mentioned in a positive light in a book.Perhaps those same reviewers are the very ones who need an attitude adjustment the most!!!

Read, enjoy, and be encouraged to know you have the Lord ready to help you when you need an attitude change.

Highly reccomended.

5-0 out of 5 stars attitude is leadership, leadership is influence
Attitude creates the difference between mediocre performance and exceptional results. Its not good or bad circumstances, but how and how often we handle circumstances that will determine where we will be.I dont know how John Maxwell puts it all together but its amazing how this book is overflowing with the right information for those who want to learn, change, overcome and move ahead in whatever they are doing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice mix for the open minded
I'm a Christian. However, most books touching on Christianity really turn me off, mainly because some Christians come across as if their beliefs are the only right way to think. It's seems to me that Christianity is not the only game out there, and it certainly isn't the oldest. Isn't the goal to believe what Christ believed, and so act as He? Nuff said.

Maxwell's book is terrific. Many authors tell how to have a great attitude, but Maxwell explains that we need more than just directions... We need guidance, and at times, we need help.
Maxwell reminds us that when we need help, there is a power greater than ourselves which can do for us what we can't do for ourselves. Yes, the book does contain Christian references. However, what is built upon that foundation is pure right thinking and common sense.

My greatest challenge has been my thinking, and Maxwell provides a solution.

1-0 out of 5 stars a let down - written by a preachy pastor
a word of warning to those for whom a warning is in order.
this book is written by a christian pastor, who quotes
from the bible approximately every other page.i didn't
want this kind of book, and want to make it clear to people
out there like me, who aren't looking for subliminal
evangelism, that this book has a subtle tendency to proselytise.
None of the amazon reviewers made this clear enough,
I thought.

5-0 out of 5 stars Attitude is Vital!
Only an overcomer can write the kind of things John C. Maxwell writes. You can tell if a person has paid his dues and its evident Maxwell has. It's all a matter of focus. Maxwell says "A hardened attitude is a dreaded disease" and the way to overcome that is to focus on God's power and not the problem.

Maxwell has a gift for putting truths into a fresh framework. For example consider what he says about one's life being affected by attitude, "Our attitude and action toward life help determine what happens to us." In other words, he's about to go into a discussion of self-fulfilling prophecy. He goes on to talk about how attitude affects relationships and other areas of life.

He issues a challenge that I want to someday try myself. He says for the next week, treat every person you meet as the most important person on earth. Imagine the results!

This book is packed with goodies. Maxwell's advice leads to living a quality life because it is solidly based on the teachings of Jesus Christ. ... Read more

"The magic key to health, happiness, and romance is waiting for you in your local health food store," says relationship guru John Gray, Ph.D. Not only do men and women have different communication and love styles, they gain and lose weight differently and need different diets, asserts Gray, author of the bestselling Mars and Venus series. Though he does not have credentials in exercise, nutrition, or weight management, Gray creates a program that, he claims, balances each gender's brain chemistry, resulting in health, weight loss, stress management, and romance.

Gray analyzes the specific brain chemicals, hormones, and reactions to stress that affect men and women differently and influence relationships. He recommends an eating plan involving at least three meals a day; replacing breakfast with a low-calorie, nutritious breakfast shake; taking amino acid supplements; drinking "cleansing nutrients"; and avoiding junk food. The exercise prescription is only seven pages long (out of 314), consisting of his "bounce, shake, breathe, and flex" program. This may stimulate brain chemicals, but it doesn't do much for cardiovascular or muscle conditioning. Gray seems more concerned with avoiding getting too much exercise than getting enough or the right kind (according to exercise professionals). --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Super information!
I read the book, thought "why not try one more that will fail," and tried it. The first week I just did the cleansing drink and morning shake and my lifetime of depression was "gone" and my energy was great! This was enough motivation to start the diet.I have lost 20 lbs in 40 days, I am not hungry or feeling deprived, and not working out to exhaustion. The last time I was able to lose weight was 6 years ago through starving and working out 3 hours a day--I knew at 54, I was NOT going to do that again. But, I have a lot of questions (which as he assures you in his book he is available to answer) that aren't being answered (could be a new book, John!).Also, a cookbook of recipes with the right amounts of carbs, proteins, and healthy fats would be GREAT!Ingredient amounts for Venus and alt. amounts for Mars for dishes : )This book has FINALLLLY given me answers!Thank you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Subject Matter is excellentbut book is very wordy
The underlying facts brought forth by Dr. Gray are very interesting but as I read the book I just kept getting the feeling that a lot of it was there for the sake of filling pages up with print.I believe Dr. Gray could have written a much more effective book by shortening it in 1/2.Thin is In.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed
I bought two copies of this book after hearing him on COAST to COAST AM.I planned to give one to my sister.Well I should have read the reviews from normal people first.I notice the excellent reviews all come from other authors or co-authors or those somehow in the diet or doctor field.I am having a difficult time getting anything out of this book.I find it's presentation frustrating, and a lot of gobblety gook.I tried to find specific information I heard on the show and am having an aweful time doing so.I like a book where I can go to a chapter you "think" is about what it says it is about, and goes to the point without fancying up and saying a lot of nothing in the text. The highlighted text on each page throughout the book is very distracting. The font is too small (age I assume).I am sooo disappointed.;(

Just when you thought you had read everything there was on dieting, John Gray comes up with some fascinating new insights. Linking diet to brain chemicals, sex drive, psychological wellness and gender in a comprehensive, yet easy to understand manner; this book goes far beyond the other diet books out there. While filled with interesting material, the beauty of this book lies in making dieting as simple, or complex as the reader chooses. The author is fully aware that for most people, diets need to be simple, straightforward, easy to use, and provide results in a short period. I have been using his breakfast shake formula for 3 months now and have noticed a marked increase in my energy level, mental alertness...and yes..even my sex drive! I highly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Good Salesman, Bad Advice
Dr. Grey, with a PhD from a university closed down by the State of California as a diploma mill, is a great salesman and story teller. Although his thesis in his new diet and exercise book is intriguing, Grey does not give any references whatsoever as to from where his theories about hormones and their role in nutrition come. Some facts in the books seem dubious, "..the brain uses 20 percent of the calories we consume."
However, because the caloric intake of his nutrition system should be less than the reader would normally take, participants in the system should show a loss of weight over time. And because the theory is novel, a reader will also tend to believe everything Grey says, as believe they "feel" better.
I would feel safer about his nutrition ideas if he had added an appendix of references to scientific or even to popular literature that could confirm his ideas as good science. ... Read more

I've always considered myself the most skeptical of skeptics, but Dr. Sarno has earned my lifelong gratitude. I've suffered from severe, chronic back pain ever since I was attacked by a combative mental patient when I working as an R.N. This book liberated me. Since I read it, I've been Advil and Tylenol free for over a month, I've returned to lifting anything I want, doing vigorous aerobics, jazz dancing, and most important of all, I'm able to sit when I work (I'm now a writer), when I'd been forced to stand and write for months now due to the pain. Yes, the book is a little like Tinkerbell. You have to believe for it to work. But Dr. Sarno's common sense theories had the ring of truth for me from the first time I read them. I realize now that my accident wasn't the "cause" of my pain, it was the "trigger" and that has made all the difference in my life. Give this book a try! It's been an answer to my most fervent prayers for me.

I found Dr. Sarno's theories regarding the epidemic of back pain to be incredibly innovative, yet making a lot of sense. I read the book after seeing Dr. Sarno's interview with broadcast journalist John Stossel (who related his own success after treatment by Dr. Sarno, to the skepticism of his MD brother, who was also on the show) and after I had tried every treatment available short of surgery for disc herniation (lumbar) and "severe disc degeneration" (cervical). I even had a morphine pump surgically implanted to deliver non-systemic morphine to my lumbar discs 24 hours per day, with minimal success, and still must take massive doses of oral pain meds and muscle relaxants to get through the day, so I was ready to try anything.... My complaint with this book is that very little information is given on implementing Dr. Sarno's theories. He articulates what he states is a new diagnosis for back pain: Tension Myositis Syndrome, or TMS, which is basically that back pain results from the brain subliminally causing the pain to distract patients from psychological distress; particularly convincing was his observation that thousands of people have herniated discs and other structural problems detectable by an MRI but never suffer any pain. His main treatment as set forth in the book, primarily from the experiences of his patients, seems to be to "talk to your brain" and let it know that you know what it is doing. I just can't get the hang of talking to my brain or any of the other exercises offered as successful by the patients quoted. When I called Dr. Sarno's office -- because his primary suggested method of treatment is to attend his lectures -- a message simply gave the names of doctors, none near me, who treat back pain using his methodology. I further left a NY area phone number, as he requested for those who live near the Big Apple, and indicated that I would travel to NYC for treatment, and there was never a response. Thus, I highly recommend the book for its theory of the cause of back pain, but do not read this book expecting to receive much information on the how-to of achieving cure through Dr. Sarno's methods. This left me hanging, and highly disappointed....Nonetheless, I would recommend that any sufferer of chronic back pain read the book for the theories, SOMEONE is bound to come out with a book which gives more information on implementing a cure for TMS. The book is certainly worth the purchase price for the glimmer of hope it provides.

Several years ago I was off work for nine months because of what the doctors diagnosed as repetitive motion and then disc problems. AFTER major sugery, when they told me I'd be out of work and in excruciating pain the rest of my life, I found this book--it was next to one of those "how to live with excruciating pain" books.

Within two hours of starting to read Dr. Sarno's Healing Back Pain I could turn my neck. Within two weeks the pain was completely gone, and I've been a ball of fire since. I wish I could thank him in person. Buy this book, if you can, do it before you commit to major surgery.

This book links the mind and pain sensations to the gastrointestinal tract. There is an association between the pain signals and the gastrointestinal tract; however, the curative
result is in controlling inflammation. The author provides a good
analysis of peripheral nerve involvement in the management of
pain. Specific coping strategies are cited, as well as
testimonials in the form of numerous letters from satisfied
followers and adherents. The author cites Vitamin C in megadoses
as a preferred treatment option. He relates pain to specific
anger as an undercurrent which magnifies the pain sensations
in proportion to the degree of anger/resentment present.
The author describes the oxygen deprivation in muscles and
specific trigger points for pain. These ideas complement
existing knowledge in conventional medicine,as well as
known oxygen therapies in Europe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still doing great after five years!
I like to check in every now and then with my progress and I have to say that since reading this book and implementing its suggestions in 1999, I have been free of back pain for five years. I NEVER take it for granted. I biked 35 miles just today without so much as a twinge. I had suffered with back pain for ten years after being attacked by a combative patient at work (I was a psych nurse) so it was pretty much a miracle to stumble on Dr. Sarno's book and his theories. I'm an incredibly practical person who tends to pooh-pooh a lot of holistic medicine, but these theories are based on common sense. If I ever feel even a twinge of discomfort, usually re-reading the Prologue is enough to make me better. Thank you, Dr. Sarno, for changing my life! ... Read more
