This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." Carnegie illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the business world, and everyday folks. --Joan Price ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Buy friends and coerce people
This is a very funny book. It's not meant to be, but the ideas it tries to put across are machiavelian, childish and short sighted. The underlying theme is that one should do favours for others in order to receive the same from them: hardly a theme to build friendships on.

If you are currently paying people cash to be your "friend", you might find significant financial savings from the ideas in this book: you could be paying them in plenty of other ways.

It makes a great gag gift: you will find yourself passing this around to read out loud at parties.

5-0 out of 5 stars It won me over.
Just a joy to read, this book is truly a classic. With its timeless stories the author uses to illustrate the principles of getting along with others, this book should be requires reading for all human beings. Other self-help books I liked include "The No-Beach, No-Zone, No-Nonsense Weight Loss Plan, A Pocket Guide To What Works."

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the first how to social skills books
Well, this is the grand dady of all social skills how to books from business to love and romance.I have the old fashioned politically incorrect version and have to re-read it to pick up the important points.

Some people understandably don't like this sort of book.It could make one so superficial to do things by rote all because you want something - but Carnegie himself points this out and scorns selfish motives.

It is ultimately about survival in a tough, competitive world and being genuinely nice to people - which naturally works.Especially good if you want to deal with Americans as Americans already know the lessons of this book and have studied it compared to continentals.

No book can necessarily help you get a top job or win the love of your life, no matter how much they promise to - especially if you mechanically try and follow instructions supplied in them. But for general principles this book is so important.

After all etiquette is something taught by Confucius, the Buddha and many historical personages - and this book has looked at all the greatest books before it came up with its strategies and rules of thumb.

The original book was based on so much research (and I don't really want the update) - that it would repay study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Carnegie is the founder of emotional intelligence
I'm a big emotional intelligence fan, and when I read this book I can't help but see the parallels between Carnegie's thinking and the modern emotional intelligence works. This book, despite it's age, speaks to some of the core truths of how people work and provides excellent strategies for how to connect with other people. Carnegie has a keen understanding of what motivates people and I really enjoyed how succinctly he is able to sum things up and give me a useful way to approach my own life.

My favorite "modern" emotional intelligence book is "The Emotional Intelligence Quick Book" because it includes a free online test where you can measure your own EQ and learn how to better connect with people. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How To Be Empathic While Remaining Balanced
Karla McLaren's workshop on tape is just about the right length, and presents about the right information at about the right depth. The idea of someone being or wanting to become an empath speaks volumes about that individual even before the first step is taken or the first idea is taught. If the meek are to inherit the Earth, you'll find a quorum here.

It has been said that the voice is the barometer of one's being, and if so Karla's is beautiful (in both respects). Here is the voice of experience, one who has taken her childhood wounds and used them as a vehicle to transcend the common mold, to become a butterfly rather than choosing to remain a victim.

Karla explains what an empath is and highlights the differences between clairvoyance, clairaudience and clairsentience. She explains the theory of the five elements of the human personality and presents a powerful working model for balancing the psyche. No part of the personality should be squelched because a person is "too sensitive". What really needs to be accomplished is the balancing of a dominant attribute by bolstering other aspects of the personality. (This portion of the tape alone is so interesting and useful that it could be considered a seminar in its own right.)

Karla teaches the inner skills of self knowledge, emotional agility and humility, and the importance of external support systems such as healthy relationships, good boundaries and the ability to create separations. She explains how to maintain a sense of personal space, of grounding and image releasing, and other skills necessary to protect against the energy overloading that may be associated with emotional over-exposure. She also teaches the skills of listening without projecting one's own judgements into the picture.

She talks about the primary emotions - anger, fear, sadness, depression and suicidal tendencies - their many and varied derivations and disguises, and shows that emotions are messengers, not problems. She exposes the awesome primal power that can be tapped into by communicating with the emotions and the deep insights they can yield, and provides the specific questions that should be asked in the presence of each emotion. Fantastic!

I think the word "skills" is the cornerstone of this seminar. It's all about learning how to handle situations with finesse, rather than force, and a bit of "by the book" is a nice balance to the obvious emotional predilection of the subject matter.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woo hoo! "Becoming An Empath" is not just for healers!
Wondering how empathic you are? One thing for sure--you ARE empathic! With these tapes you can figure out if you use projection, mimicry or clairsentience when relating to others. Learning three internal skills, you can work from a place of wholeness. Learning emotional agility allows you to ask the right questions and move through emotions to healing. And learning three external skills cultivates and supports your empathic skills. Speaking of support, Karla says that empaths need the company of other empaths for understanding and exchange--and that includes your partner at home.

Karla also gives three steps to clear empathy that are important when helping others and maintaining yourself. And if you're like me, the advice to do some "conscious complaining" is pure joy!

The skills in the last session are some you've seen before if you've worked with Karla's tapes, but done this time in a different context. At the end, two Sufi meditations are suggested for those in conflict in close relationships.

These are powerful tapes! I highly recommend them to everyone, as we're all living on some empathic level. I love Karla's music, her voice, and her awe-inspiring connection with that misunderstood and neglected part of us--the emotions. ... Read more

Book Description

With her two lectures, Preparation for Relationships and Depression, Marianne Williamson challenges listeners to examine how they think about each area of their lives and relationships.

Our relationships are not separate from our work, and our health is not separate from our money or our spiritual lives. When we experience trouble in any area of our lives, Williamson tells us, it's a sign that our minds have shifted from their natural alignment with God. And we experience this separation from God as "problems."

How we perceive our problems is central to achieving peace in our lives. If we see the cause of our problems as being outside ourselves, we will put our energy toward changing the outward appearances of our problems. But this does not remove the problem. We will experience cycles and variations on our problems until we look within ourselves for the cause -- and the solution.

Thought is the power we have to create change in our lives. Through conscious right thinking, we can achieve peace by turning our focus from ourselves, and to God. It is then, Williamson assures us, that we will realize that we are never alone and our depressions will lift as we see the brilliant light within each of us.

A continuation of her lectures based on A Course in Miracles.

2-0 out of 5 stars very helpful
I give it 2 and not 1 star is because of some good information. She tells us to fall in love with Universe. Because of this and other similar comments I give it 2. I do recommend that you listen to this. She has a lot of good, and helpful information that will help you see things from a different side of problems & relationships. don't accept everything she tells you, but some of the information will open your eyes on dealing with problems and relationships. And even if you're not in one at the moment, you still need to hear this. This is a must for all who is in a relationship or thinking to enter one.

Easy to listen, she's a great speaker

5-0 out of 5 stars A gem!
Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest. Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing. Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly. Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Marianne Williamson WINNER!
Everything I've ever read, listened to by Ms. WIlliamson, has been very enlightening. This was no exception. Her manner is informative, yet her humor & her personal experience keeps me coming back for more. I related to many things mentioned in this tape - because in many areas, I've come "full circle" & I would highly recomend this tape to anyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect timing again!
I knew I needed emotional healing, but never really thought much about the depression part of it. Then I experienced a Mild Traumatic Head Injury. Well into the third year of my healing, I found the audiocassette again. I did not realize I was dealing with depression (you don't know, what you don't know with a brain injury). Marianne never fails to come through for me... I recommend this to anyone. ... Read more

Book Description

Monty Roberts is part James Herriott, part Bill Gates, and part John Wayne. And his story is one you will never forget.

Monty Roberts is a real-life horse whisperer--an American original whose gentle training methods reveal the depth of communication possible between man and animal. He can take a wild, high-strung horse who has never been handled and persuade that horse to accept a bridle, saddle, and rider in thirty minutes.

Monty's powers may seem like magic, but his amazing "horse senseis based on a lifetime of experience. He started riding at the age of two, and at the age of thirteen went alone in the high deserts of Nevada to study mustangs in the wild. In The Man Who Listens to Horses, Roberts tells about his early days as a rodeo rider, his problems with his violent, horse-trainer father, his friendship with James Dean, and the invitation that changed his life--to demonstrate his methods to the Queen of England.

From his groundbreaking work with horses, Monty now takes his understanding of nonverbal communication and applies it to human relationships as well. He has shown that between parent and child, employer and employee, and abuser and abused, there are forms of communication far stronger than the spoken word--forms accessible to all who will learn to listen. He's shared his insights with more than 250 corporations, including General Motors, IBM, Disney, and Merrill Lynch; now listeners can learn from Monty first-hand.

"Wild horses should not drag you away from finding out more about Monty Roberts."

5-0 out of 5 stars Interesting and Informative
As a horse crazy teenager, I will read any horse book I can get my hands on. So when I recived this book I dove right in. As I got further and further into the book it got harder to tear myself away from it. I thought it was increadible that he could earn the trust of a wild mustang and have it ready to ride in 30 to 45 min. The way he and the horse communicate is just amazing. The horse listens to him and he listens back. My favorite thing he does is that he does not use violence to break in the horses. When some people use violence to break in the horses, the horse might then interpurt that that person means he is going to get hurt. I can't stand to see horses in pain so what I think Monty Roberts is diong is wonderful. I just wish that there are more trainers like him in the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring story of horses, humans, and search for harmony
This is the amazing life story of Monty Roberts. Monty has been called a modern day horse whisperer, although the language he uses with horses has nothing to do with whispering-except, perhaps, for its subtlety and gentleness. Monty learned the language he calls Equus from a band of wild horses that he observed as a youth in the American West. While the book isn't about Monty's methods per se, it is about Monty's life and therefore about how his methods were shaped. Monty can, using a round pen and the language of Equus, achieve what he calls "join-up" with a green, unschooled (and even difficult) horse and within a half hour have that horse under saddle and calmly carrying its first rider. All this with absolutely no use of force or harsh means. Monty has used join-up to "fix" countless "problem horses" whose worst problems were typically their human handlers.

The book does include a brief appendix as a guide for "join-up." In it, Monty advises, "Hold in your mind the idea that the horse can do no wrong; that any action taken by the horse-especially the young unstarted horse-was most likely influenced by you. We can do little to teach the horse; we can only create an environment in which he can learn... If we refuse to believe that the horse can communicate, pain can be used to train him somewhat effectively. But pain is needless and terribly limiting."

This is a book for everyone, including those unafflicted by "horse fever." You are treated to encounters with such legends as James Dean and Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and completely riveted by events one can hardly believe were not conjured by a Hollywood scriptwriter. Here is an inspiring story of hope with a message of peace and understanding. As a child and as an adult, Monty has come face to face with and experienced the brutality that can occur in the world. Monty is living proof that the cycle of violence can not only be broken, but that people can learn to live in harmony with each other and with our fellow creatures. I highly recommend this tribute to the human and equine spirit for horse lovers, students of the human condition and those just looking for a great read. My gratitude to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth for encouraging Monty to write it down!

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Gift for Horse Lovers and Riders
Monty Roberts has done the horse world a great service by sharing his non-violent training methods with us. His love of horses leaps off of every page as he describes the old training ways of his father and the conflicts and punishment he endured to continue with his training methods using horse language and body language. This is a pleasure to read and a learning tool to teach all of us who work with horses how to understand their fears and gain their trust.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Man of Knowledge- Not Magic
Monty Roberts, no doubt, is a man of great horsemanship and understanding of the equine world, but he is not alone. Long before Roberts studied the equestrian arts and wild herds, Natives learned the language of "horse" and passed it on to Spanish conquistadors. Even someone with basic horsemanship could learn the body language and commmunicate. I have experimented with something very similar to "join up" just by sending my horse around the round pen. So whether you are Monty Roberts or not, you can still communicate with horses.

However, this book was a nice refresher course for my friend who has missed out on interaction with horses for several years. She got a lot from it, and being the type of rider who shows up and rides, she learned to respect her horse and build a dominance and a relationship that worked in unison. I would recommend this book to someone with very little to moderate horse experience and have not yet learned the values of horse and man communication.

The deer section is quite cool, though! It's not everyday you hear of a horse trainer talking (or shall I say listening...) to a deer!

Yours Truly,
The Equestrian Critique

5-0 out of 5 stars A great trainer, a great technique, and a great book!
This is a fascinating autobiography of one of the most sought-after horse trainers in the world. Monty Roberts takes us from his childhood, growing up on a ranch in California, all the way up through the years right before the book was first published in 1996. He learned to ride at a very young age and was quite successful on the rodeo circuit and in reined cow horse competitions. But what really gave him his ambition to develop a method of communicating with horses was the abuse with which he saw his father treat horses, and the the abuse he himself received from his father. Convinced that there must be a better way to train horses, he observed the behavior of mustangs, and ultimately came up with a technique he calls 'join-up'.

'Join-up' involves working with a horse in a round pen, first encouraging the horse to flee around the perimeter by making steady eye contact and assuming an imposing stance. The handler then watches for three tell-tale signs that the horse wishes to communicate - first the horse will lock his inside ear on the handler, then begin licking and chewing, and finally lower his head near the ground as he travels around the pen. Once the horse has given these signals, the handler takes his/her eyes off the horse and shifts away from from the animal. At this point the horse will usually come up behind the handler and stand very close, allowing the handler to touch him. Then the horse can be saddled, bridled, and at last, mounted and ridden. (This is a very truncated explanation - the book goes into much more detail.)

Of course Roberts was not the first to use methods like these. Some other reviewers here have complained about this fact, accusing him of taking undue credit. But Roberts himself admits this in his book. He points out that there were trainers in previous centuries that tried (and had success with) similar methods, but that for whatever reason these methods did not take a firm hold on the general equestrian population. So yes, Roberts does do a lot of self-promotion here (another thing some have complained about), but this is because he's attempting to spread the word about his method of training. He is using the book first and foremost to sell his technique, but this is because he wishes to make the training experience a better one for horses.

This book takes us through Roberts' journey of learning, and all the trials and triumphs that led him to where he is today. He tells us of his experience with mustangs, his successful childhood riding career, the encounters with his father that helped shape his own way of thinking, the development (and narrowly-avoided disaster) of his Thoroughbred racehorse facility Flag Is Up Farms, various success stories of his 'join-up' method, his meeting with Queen Elizabeth II of England, his many tours to demonstrate his techniques, and even his succes in using 'join-up' with wild deer. He also introduces us to the horses that have shaped his life and carved a place for themselves in his heart - Brownie, his childhood mount; Johnny Tivio, his all-time favorite; and Dually, his most recent mount.

Toward the end of the book there is a 'How To' appendix describing in detail the 'join-up' technique. Roberts lists all the necessary equipment (nothing fancy is needed - everything is standard equipment that any horse owner should already have; the only thing you may have to 'borrow' is the round pen itself if you do not have one), and takes us through the procedure in a clear step-by-step fashion. He explains the purpose of each aspect of 'join-up' and how the horse will perceive the handler's actions. He also explains the meaning of the horse's responses to these actions. The appendix is very easy to follow and the technique is simple enough that it is easy to remember afterward, without having to lug the book to the arena with you.

The book concludes with an afterword by Lawrence Scanlan, the author of 'Riding High' and co-author (with Ian Millar) of 'Big Ben'. Scanlan describes his experience observing the 'mustang project' that Roberts embarked upon in 1997. This takes us briefly into the story of Shy Boy, a small mustang stallion Roberts attempts to gentle (in the wild, not in a pen) with his 'join-up' technique. The afterword is very short. Roberts went on to write about his experience with Shy Boy in his next book 'Shy Boy: The Horse that Came in from the Wild'. I have not read that one yet, but plan to soon, as I was very impressed with 'The Man Who Listens to Horses'. I would highly recommend it to anyone involved with horses. ... Read more

Medication? Maybe. Marry the right person and find the right job? A must if you are an adult suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). So say psychiatrists Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey, authors of the influential Driven to Distraction, published in 1994. In their new book, Delivered from Distraction, Hallowell and Ratey survey the current medical landscape concerning ADD, combining their own clinical observations with the latest research to paint a much more complex and, in many ways, positive picture of the condition than has generally been presented.

Hallowell and Ratey embrace the idea that success in life comes more from playing to your strengths than overcoming your weaknesses. In the case of a person with ADD (child or adult), these strengths often include unusually high levels of creativity, charisma, intelligence, and energy. The authors insist that, while medication and other treatments can sometimes work wonders in reducing limitations, surrounding yourself with people who promote these positive traits, be they in your personal or professional life, is the single most important element to living well with ADD. As both Hallowell and Ratey are not only experts in the field, but "ADDers" themselves, the tips and stories they share for how to do so are fresh, funny, and far more helpful than tired arguments over drugs verse no drugs or whether there’s even such a thing as ADD at all.--Patrick Jennings ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book really made me feel normal again
I loved this book of course I didn't read it all in one sitting but like you I have ADD.It validated my feeling about myself and a diagnosis of ADD. I gave it to my mom and she looks at me and goes "ok, that explains so much." I really feel like she understands how my brain works. This book is for you and anyone who loves you and anyone you want to understand you. I'm giving it to my sister who is very opposite of me type A, my way is the best way, now she will try understand how I work. I now feel normal because I understand why I do things different from other people. I just thought I was weird but I'm not I'm just more creative

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book - Updated Information
I read this book immediately following Driven to Distraction by the same authors. Both have had great impact of my understanding of ADD, and especially understanding the long-term impact of untreated ADD.

Would highly recommend both books, plus ADD-Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life - it's amazing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Celebrate Children with ADHD!
We offer many thanks to Edward Hallowell for providing valuable insight into children and adults with ADD, ADHD and non-traditional learning styles. Dr. Hallowell busts open many of the myths about ADHD and offers proactive, hopeful solutions to parents.

This philosophy is the foundation of our own unique approach called Celebrate! which we restore a child's confidence, purpose and joy by focusing on the child's natural gifts, talents and passions.

Like Dr. Hallowell, we believe that children with ADHD have many superior qualities that offer them unique advantages versus other children. The key is to take stock of their unique qualities, turn negatives into positives and focus their energy on their strengths. Above all, let's enjoy our children.

Delivered from Distraction is a very insightful book that will give you lots of tips on how to better celebrate and enjoy your child.

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift to AD/HDers
Dr. Hallowell has given us a GIFT in this optimistic, realistic, encouraging book.Yes, there is a dark side to ADD (prison, alcoholism, unemployment...) but it's about time we heard about the strengths - intuition, creativity, the ability to connect with others, and the kind of risk-taking that changes lives for the better.Thank you, thank, thank you.

If you'd like the unabridged version, it's available from, and the reader, Dan Cashman, is superb. The same abridged version read by Dr. Hallowell is also available.

5-0 out of 5 stars how to control ADD

The two authors who both have ADD give much insight into treatments for ADD.They highly recommend physical exercise saying, "Ten minutes of exercise is equal to one Prozac and one Ritalin."Besides describing the usual types of treatments they offer various balance exercises and drawing drills to help rewire the brain. They offer a method of modifying AA's twelve steps to control ADD.They talk about other disorders like bipolar illness that often occur together with ADD.They have a whole chapter illustrating the subtle differences between the two.Basically ADD people are consistent with their moods, bipolar people cycle through periods where they might be quite functional.

Here's a book that guides women back to their true essence.

The Goddess within every woman is embraced, honored and adored in A Woman's Worth. If we ever doubted the feminine beauty, Marianne Williamson passionately weaves a modern mystical tale reminding us of Her necessity.

In countless ways she gives testimony to the love and goodness all women can provide the world. It is the feminine in all of us that brings the finer subtleties to life fulfilling what Nature craves. It is the responsibility of men and women alike to balance our masculine communities, our masculine governments, our masculine ways. It is through our own gracefulness that we attune ourselves to the highest good.

Throughout her passionate commentary of her own life and the lives' of women, Marianne teaches how to embrace all that is feminine. From chapters Glorious Queens and Slavegirls to The Castle Walls, her personal, intuitive insights move all of us to cultivate that which is pure in our being. In order to develop the Goddess within, appreciation is given to the necessity of pain in our lives while the importance of forgiveness, patience, and understanding is encouraged. At any stage in our personal development journey all can benefit from Marianne's conversational and uplifting prose.

Finally, this is the book that will take you to higher plains in your development.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Powerful Insight!
This book reminds you of your greatness as a woman. Reminding you that it is okay to do well and be the best you can be and the goddess you were born to be! This is a spiritual journey into our self-realization as woman. A book not just for women but also for men who wish to acknowledge their feminine powers of intuition, passion, healing, nurturing. The author's insight is insightful and encircling and she has an extraordinary was to actualize the women's roles in family, society, relationship and just the being. This is a book nobody should miss and one you purchase two for. To keep one and to pass the other to a friend.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life...
Marianne Williamson puts forth in this beautiful book, what we all know. Deep down in the bottom of our soul, we know that we're here for a purpose. We know that God created us and that for centuries we have been silenced, denigrated and devalued. Yes, we know we are powerful, but many of us have forgotten.
Read this book and remember. And then buy one for your sister, your best friend, your mother and your daughter.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful treatise on woman
The heart of a woman lies, according to Marianne, in the secret interior of the heart. She talks a lot about the body and mind, and how they come together to form the feelings we have had about each other, and as human beings, to our sexual spirits and ideals.

Her diverse iconography of language in this wonderfully written book divests to us the true beauty of a woman. Naked, powerful, unfathomable. With her distinct breath, a woman reveals her instinct as a Goddess and as a spiritual animal, capable of both honoring the goddess and loving her sensibility.

The religion she refers to (in the book as in A Return to Love) is a mainly Judeo-Christian one, one also bound to be a fatigue to most readers interested in the spirit. I say this with clarity, because I came from the religion she talks about, and it is a very sad religion, because it takes away women's power over their bodies, and ultimately, truth. I think she uses words like God and King and Heaven to illustrate her point of view, and not name any one point or place or whatever. It's her choice of words that may throw some people off, but in the end, you will see an immaculate dialogue forming between the characters in her mythical tale and her worldview of the reality of how little woman's bodily nature has been revered, and how decimated she has become, because of this.

I hope you will read this book! It's a wonderful work about women who are searching for answers on how to live fully, openly gracious, and more considerate of those around them. If you like this please buy her other treatise on love, "A Return to Love".

5-0 out of 5 stars A great gem
Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest. Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing. Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly. Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you're creative, you need this tape set!
If you've ever felt "stuck" or as if people weren't really paying attention to you... if you're an artist and frustrated with your own work or how others perceive some of your work... if you've ever wanted to be an artist, but didn't feel "good enough"... You need this tape set. No, I don't mean you should hear it someday; I mean that you need to get this tape set right NOW. You need to hear it. (That should be in neon lights, flashing in front of your monitor.) Put "The Creative Fire" on your tape player and take out a box of tissues. If you listen to it in the car, be prepared when Dr. Estes starts reading from her poem, "How to Silence a Woman," because you may be ready to vent, big time, right then & there. She's telling you the truth you've needed to hear since forever. I repeat: if you've ever felt creative, or wanted to do something creative, and felt stuck or sad or not good enough, at ANY step in the creative process (including when you finished it), you need this tape set. It is the most significant message I've heard in the past year, at least. It is really, really, REALLY important.

5-0 out of 5 stars The truth about creativity & imagination
This is one of two books/audio that I give or recommend to anyone struggling with their creativity (the other is Julia Cameron's 'The Artist's Way', the first book only). You can listen to these tapes on a regular basis and begin to remember what it all means -- why you want to create art, why it matters intensely, who is standing in your way, how to regain the spark, and how to live fully in your creative imagination.

All of Estes' audio tapes are fabulous -- she has the voice and the wisdom of the mother/friend/ therapist we all wish we had in our lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tapes About the Creative Force Within.
I listen to these tapes over again every few months. I learn something new each time. Her stories renew my spirit. They teach me the way to guide myself creatively. I think anyone who ever wanted to create would be inspired. I would recommend these tapes to artists, musicians, authors, actors, poets, healers. Those who know the process gain insight into their own creative energy. Wounderful insperation for those whose creative energy is blocked and need guidence. In these tapes she gives us the tools to respect the process and keep the fire burning bright not for a day but a lifetime. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars by the Editor of Become the Dream
Become The Dream is a powerful and practical teaching tool for professionals in any of the health and counseling fields, and an inspiring and provocative book for anyone seeking self-knowledge and actualization. Randal Churchill is Director of the Hypnotherapy Training Institute and originator of Hypnotic Dreamwork™. In this book he introduces a revolutionary combination of therapies that brings Gestalt dreamwork together with hypnosis. The vast majority of dreamwork methods rely on analysis and interpretation. By contrast, Gestalt dreamwork brings the dreamer into a deeper experience of the dream itself and allows the individual to find the unique relationship of the dream to his or her own existential experience. The addition of a wealth of hypnotic techniques takes the dreamer much further, with a variety of effective options such as hypnotic deepening, ideomotor methods, regression and positive suggestions for further insight and integration. Actual transcripts from a wide range of fascinating dreamwork sessions draw the reader into an intimate look at therapy from the inside. With great sensitivity and skill, the author demonstrates the remarkable potential of this unique work to tap into the receptivity and wisdom inherent in the subconscious mind and the potential for profound change.

Easy reading book that has helped me understand the real meaning of my dreams. Uses hypnotic, self-hypnotic and gestalt psychology techniques to do it. Includes actual case histories that are phenomenally interesting to read. Now I know the message that my dreams bring to me. I can then take action to change my life in a positive way. Different than any other "dream" book I know. Highly recommended to anyone interested in knowing more about their dreams, discovering a consistent technique to do it, and then using that information to make positive changes in one's life. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Uplifting and Reassuring, A Book that Makesa Difference!
We live in a time of instant gratification and defined success. It's easy to become overwhelmed by the unexpected and the disappointments of being destination driven.Through her writing, Barbara De Angelis has shown me how to step back, so I can see more and give more. "How Did I Get Here" helps release the energy, the hope and the vision necessary to experience a more fulfilling journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars the Best book Barbara has written!!!

Barbara de Angelis has said this is her lifes work, and the best book she has written - i completely agree!
With heartfelt honesty about her journey she guides and supports the reader to reach deeply within ourselves... and gets results.

Regardless of HOW MUCH personal development, or how many books you have read.. you must read this one!
This book is Highly recommended to everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
I haven't even finished the book yet - but I like it so much I've already ordered two other copies! One for a friend who will really like the book, the other for a family member who NEEDS this book right now, as he is going thru exactly the situation the book describes.

Ms. DeAngelis is showing me that it is okay to just ask questions about life, and not be too impatient waiting for the answers to come.Sometimes it just takes a while.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
A great book.Well worth reading.Take the time to invest in yourself by reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars NOT JUST FOR WOMEN-My wife gave it to me and I loved it
Okay, I know Barbara De Angelis has a huge female following-- my wife has at least five of her books and I never touched them, as I mostly read mystery or business books. But my wife asked me to give this one a chance and I am glad she insisted. How did I Get Here lays out an illuminating point of view about life, stress, success and the things I have gone through as a man who owns my own company that gave me tremendous insight into myself and how, as BD says, I've been sabotaging my own happiness.
Barbara D. hits the nail on the head, and explains things I've never read before in a way that made sense even to me, a guy who wouldn't be caught dead watching Oprah. I like practical books, and this one, although admittedly very "feel good" does give you ways to look at things that make a difference instantly. I feel less stuck, less stressed and gulp..I must admit...closer to my wife. I will never hear the end of it. Ladies, get this book for your reluctant husband. Even if he growls at you at first, he'll thank you. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This Eating Strategy Worked for Me
In July I was diagnosed with Adult ADD. I was also almost 20 lbs overweight. One and a half weeks after I tried eating mostly the foods recommended for my blood type I noticed my brain stopped racing and I felt more focused. Not all Adult ADD can be helped with diet but mine certainly was. About 2 months later I was 14 lbs lighter and I didn't diet. I simply mostly ate the recommended foods without being a slave to them. In 6 months I lost 19 lbs and now not only feel good but like the way I look. This book works for me. I now notice what happens to me physically when I eat certain foods. I love clams but recently they had my mind buzzing so I will eat them very sparingly. My weight varies by 2 lbs from day to day but stays in a comfortable range for me with no effort. It has also worked for my cousin who has a different blood type from mine. My Psychologist says eating can't be related to blood type but all I can say is that this book worked for me effortlessly and I recommend it freely to others.

4-0 out of 5 stars Health Concerns in Following the Blood Type Diet
I came away from reading Dr. D'Adamo's book, "Eat Right For Your Blood Type", feeling very enthused and eager to get started on the plan. The theory makes much sense, and, as explained in the book, is based on very extensive and meticulous research. However, I think it's a real disservice to present this theory as a simple "one plan fits all" type thing. There are so many variations in people's personal health situations within each group, and these definitely need to be addressed on a much more specific basis, I feel. Just today, for example, new information came out that a study has shown that people who eat more yogurt don't have as much coughing and deep congestion from colds/flu etc as non-yogurt-eaters do. What does this mean for me as a type O? Do I still stay away from the yogurt, as a dairy product that is not good for my system, or might yogurt somehow be beneficial for O's as well, in regards to helping decrease congestion? And what about a type O who has problems with estrogen-related breast cysts? Won't the increased estrogen effects , from the high meat intake(with all of its natural fat-even in lean cuts) encourage more cyst formation? My sister, as a type A wanting to lose weight, embraced the A diet with great enthusiasm and much care, at the author's statements that following the correct diet for one's blood type would help to stabilize a weight problem. Even with the careful limitations she placed upon herself about quantities etc, she's been unable to lose weight, and says she was much more successful at losing on a type O diet! In my own case, I am concerned about the possible harmful effects of the high protein intake, as a type O with slight kidney deterioration, since studies have shown that a high protein diet can be harmful to the kidneys. I'm sure many other readers of Dr. D'Adamo's book have numerous questions and concerns too. And who do we turn to, medically, that is well enough acquainted with Dr. D'Adamo's theory, to be able to give care and guidance that is good and valid (based on their intimate knowledge of the theory)? In most cases, it would probably be naturopathic doctors, but I've found that, even though they often know of the theory, most are just not well acquainted with it.

It just seems to me that Dr. D'Adamo needs to address many more specifics for his readers, regarding health concerns/problems in relation to the blood type diets. And, as a real service and concern for his readers, couldn't he provide a list of doctors in various areas of the U.S. who are well-acquainted with his theory, --the same way that certain other doctors like Dr. Whitaker, who publishes a health newsletter, provide names of doctors throughout the U.S. who support and are knowledgeable about their theories.

I do hope a follow-up book by Dr. D'Adamo, with alot more specific health information for the followers of his blood type diet, is in the plans ! Diane Kurt

5-0 out of 5 stars Life and Health Improving
I had been a vegetarian for a few years, and my energy level was low. I also was having digestion problems, specifically acid reflux. There were some other problems also. A friend told me about this book, and I bless her. I bought the book, and it was a revelation. I started eating according to the book for my "O" type. I feel a lot better. Half my maternal grandmother's stomach was removed because of bleeding ulcers. Now I don't have to deal with that, just eat right for my type. I am very happy and thankful Dr D'Adamo wrote the books.

5-0 out of 5 stars This stuff really works
I recently finished Eat Right for a second time to be sure that I was selecting the right foods for my blood type and to understand more about the D'Adamo research. Well, the verdict is in...I've tried the highly beneficial, the neutral and the avoid foods alone and found that I have exactly the types of reactions that were stated in the book. With the beneficial and neutral foods I can exercise longer without breathing problems. With the avoid foods I break out in hives, wow who knew!!! Highly beneficial information, great piece of work.

Faith In The valley by Iyanla Vanzant is truly a book to help us on our journey toward peace. Ms. Vanzant imparts words of wisdom and encouragement. She is reminding us of some of the day to day things we take for granted. We sometimes forget to be thankful for what we have; good health, a job and a place to live. You will not regret reading this book. As Ms. vanzant writes, "What a blessing! I am so thankful" that I read this book. Go get yourself a copy of "Faith in The valley".

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! A must read for women of all ethnicities.
This book is targeted towards African-American women, but I don't believe that African-American are the only women who experience "life in the valley." This book offers healing, inspiration and guidance to all who read it

5-0 out of 5 stars GET THIS and GIVE THIS to your favorite women:)
This is my FAVORITE book by Iyanla Vanzant because of: It's size(small enough for your tiny purse), its lack of preach-i-ness and how the index is organized by subject. I feel its a synopsis of all the subjects covered in her other books. I also feel the book is applicable to women of ALL cultures. You can use it as a daily guide or you can use the index to find a subject for which you could use guidance.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for daily reflection
I can not express how insightful and helpful this book is! It really makes you look deep into the reason(s) why you thought you needed a book of affirmations in the first place. This book is perfect for those "why me" and "I really can't take any more" moments when you feel like life, and everything in it, needs to give you a break. If you're a woman experiencing a lot of change in your life and it seems like you just can't handle another crisis (or is it a crisis afterall?), this is the book for you. I carry it in my purse!

5-0 out of 5 stars Touches a Point
Each time my spirt is down, or I'm going through a situation, I turn to this book. I hold the book in my right hand by its spine, fan the pages with my left hand to stop at randum. The passages I've read, I have felt its deep spirtual feeling and I understand its meaning. Then I reflect on my situation and the passage fits. It helps me to understanding whats going on. It uplifts my spirit to deal with my situation. It give me insight to view my problem from a different angle. It also assures me that what I am currently going through will end. I will get through it. In my view, its a powerfull book. I have read several other books by Iyanla, even watched her talk show (sorry that went off the air), but like the bible, I keep Faith In The Valley near by. ... Read more

This book is a true gem. Despite the authors inability to spell and punctuate, it serves it's purpose. If you want to get started in hypnosis without all the long history discusion and just want to get busy trying it. This book is more helpfull in actually learning the art of hypnosis than the other ones I bought. It is an easy read. Its interesting. It gets to the point without missing anything important or any important ideas. I have only read half the book and I love it. Its the book i was looking for to start off with but ended up bying 4th. So I will buy more books but i first have to hypnotis somebody. Dont belive any bad reviews you read. your sure to like this book if your a beginer and are wanting to get started right away. Of course hypnosis needs a deep understanding to be really good at and therefore you will want to purchase many books on the sugject to ever consider yourself an expert.

1-0 out of 5 stars Completely Irresponsible
This book treats hypnosis like a party game. It is not. Hypnosis is a very serious thing that only professionals should do. Book Description

Remember your high school reunion? Even though everyone was the same chronological age, people no longer looked the same. Some stayed young and exuberant, whereas others looked as if they had aged ten years more than everyone else. Did you know that: X Financial stress can make your RealAge two to thirty-two years older? X A tablet of aspirin a day can make your RealAge 1.9 years younger? X Flossing daily and seeing a dentist and dental hygienist every six months can make your RealAge 6.4 years younger? RealAge offers a revolutionary program that calculates the aging effect of different health behaviors ranging from diet and medication to stress control and chronic smoking, and enables you to assess your own biological age. Most important, it shows you how to design a specific path to improving or reversing your own aging trajectory, and it's easier than you think. The RealAge program is based on cutting-edge scientific research. Dr. Michael F. Roizen and his team have pored over 25,000 medical studies, evaluating what they tell us about aging and the prevention of aging. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally - a simple, easy to understand way to better health!
Dr. Roizen's approach -- laid out in clear and simple English by co-author Elizabeth Stephenson -- is compelling, easy to understand, and easy to act upon. It gets past a lot of the mumbo jumbo and conflicting health advice we get bombarded with every day, through a startlingly simple concept -- "Real Age" -- that distills the best scientific research available into a comprehensive health program a child of 5 could understand . For the first time, you will see how focusing on two or three key things can really make a significant difference in your overall level of personal health, allowing you to ignore the stuff that is "nice to do", but really not all that important. (And some of it, like flossing your teeth or taking Vitamin B does not require Herculean feats of athleticism). Everyone should take the Real Age test and learn how to start living a healthier life starting tomorrow. One caveat: While I would give the book a 5-star rating, the Real Age web site deserves only 2 stars -- I encountered significant delays getting on to it, and then it took forever to fill out the questionnaire. This part still needs some work. I'm sure there are millions out there who would love to be tracking weekly progress on their Real Age -- but not if takes this long to log on!!

2-0 out of 5 stars Could be dangerous to your health
At best, this book just rehashes common-sense recommendations for taking care of yourself -- wear your seat belt, quit smoking, exercise regularly, and don't eat a lot of junk food -- so it's relatively innocuous. But, where weight is concerned, I feel that he's perpetuating stereotypes that could be detrimental to one's general health. He toes the party line -- above-average weight is bad, losing weight is good -- and his RealAge quiz attaches a disproportionately large penalty to a high BMI (try taking the RealAge quiz on his web site twice, changing nothing but the weight you report, and you'll see what I mean). The facts of the matter are that dieting doesn't work and usually makes you fatter, and that a fat person who exercises, eats a balanced diet, and otherwise takes good care of him/herself can be just as healthy as a thin person. I'm afraid that this book (like so many others on the market) will discourage fat people: they'll figure "I'm too fat, so why even bother?", rather than making the moderate lifestyle changes that would optimize their health and fitness, so the overall effects of the book will be negative. (I come from a long line of farm wives who, by modern standards, were "morbidly obese," but who led active lives, ate well, and survived into their 80's and 90's in vigorous good health -- so I'm doing my best to emulate them!)

2-0 out of 5 stars Ignores detoxification and other things
I thought this book had some useful information when I first read it several years ago. After I read it, I stopped taking selenium supplements and decreased my daily dosage of vitamin C to 2,000 mg. Then I got a tumor in my neck (spring 2000), and most recently a breast tumor. I read that selenium actually inhbits the growth of tumors, so I am upset for having followed Roizen's advice. Also, I learned that one can take up to 10 GRAMS of vitamin C per day with very beneficial results. This vitamin also helps prevent and fight cancer. Finally, Roizen completely omits any mention of the need for regular detoxification. He says it's okay to drink tap water! I have lost my respect for this author and am now selling his book. It's out of date.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not a great read but some worthwhile stuff
"Real Age" is a nice addition to the self-help health book market with a unique approach that draws a line between your chronological age and your "real" age. The book is basically a schmorgasborg of practical info, none of which is really earth-shattering. Its the tables scattered throughout the book that show your real age adjustments for doing/not doing certain activities that makes this book. I found it both encouraging and empowering to see how things in my control can benefit my long-term health (though not all real age elements are under one's control). While some of the info is sophomoric(touting the benefits of a personal trainer), some of it is useful (detailed breakdown on vitamins) and make this a worthwhile check-out at the local library.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great if you're stuck!
This audiocassette helped me realize that conflict in relationships is normal, and that every relationship goes through bad times. It's geared toward heterosexual relationships which I didn't like in the beginning but the content when she does get to the meat of it is worth it!

It helps you step outside yourself, see what's going on and what outside influences are present that we are not even aware of. It gives you hope when you think all there is are arguments and malicious intent from your partner. When it's really connected to everything and is changeable!

Perfect for my time of doubt. ... Read more
