Tara Bennett-Goleman's approach is pretty much perfect, particularly for someone who is interested in mindfulness and meditation but unsure how to proceed.She gives helpful hints and a lot of guidance of what to look for in terms of maladaptive emotional habits, but in meditation and in day to day life.I really like the book, and though I feel it is only the beginning, I am very glad I bought it.I plan on mailing it to a friend soon, in hope that she can find something of value in it as well.

I have spent years working through my psychological problems, and I have ordered -- and read -- many self-help books from Amazon.com in the process.Almost every one of those books has contributed a piece of the puzzle, but this one delivers a whole chunk of it.It helps organize "tough-nut-to-crack" psychological issues into patterns and shows how to tackle them.It also shows how meditative mindfulness can help. I am only half-way through the book and already I am seeing -- and approaching -- my own life and my relationship with my husband differently.Thank you, Tara Bennett-Goleman, for sharing your powerful understanding! In my library, this ranks right up there with Passionate Marriage by David Schnarch as a book that provides far-reaching, actionable insights.

This book is amazing! While it is true, as another reviewer noted, that this book may not tell you anything you've never heard before, it's the way Ms. Goleman delivers it that makes such an impact. I'd read and heard about mindfulness, about schemas and all that, but I never "got it" until I read THIS BOOK. And it changed my life! It got me to change my thinking about people and what they do and say, and my relationships, especially my marriage, improved tremendously. I was miserable with much of my life before I studied this book, and now, well, I've never been happier! (If you don't believe me, just ask my husband!:)) Thank you Ms. Goleman, for a brilliant book. I hope many, many more people will benefit from it as much as I have.

This type of a book is not read for its entertainment value, that it obvious. The depth of the content is a primary consideration, and in the case of this book, the material is not lacking in depth, borrowing from a subject as rich and profound as the human mind itself - Buddhist phychology. However, the message of healing through mindfulness gets lost in the hopeless wandering aroung in circles, without ever really getting anywhere. Where is this book going? By page 130 it was still not very clear. This seems more like a dry psychology textbook, filled with chapter after chapter of research results, case histories and impressive technical "buzzwords", than an inspiring and sympathetic Buddhist teaching on how to heal the emotions. I peronally have found Tich Nhat Hanh's wrtitings much more "Buddhist", in a sense, because they are warm, non-technical, practical and consise. The Dalai Lama himself has written a number of excellent books on the subject.

I thought this was a wonderful book, and very helpful.Surprised by the negative comments about its length, I found almost everything very helpful and not too redundant.The author's clear explication of Buddhist theory and practice was truly an excellent addition to the book.

Imagine yourself with the "upper hand" in almost any given situation. Dr. Lieberman shows you how with this excellent treatise on the psychology of influence and persuasion. Using an ecclectic collection of techniques, including a couple of NLP (Neurolinguistic Programming) techniques, you will truly learn how to never be taken advantage of again. Having nothing to do with manipulation, Dr. Lieberman's methods make use of skills and situations we all encounter every day in practically every interaction we have with others.

If you are concerned that using these techniques is "unethical" or "cheating" in some way, you can let that concern simply dissolve away *right now* because, as Dr. Lieberman points out, you're playing games anyway, you might as well play to win! Even if you don't *use these skills*, you will instantly be able to spot them when someone else is using them to influence you. This is a book you shouldn't be without!!

This is one of the best books I have ever read! It has nothing to do with "manipulation," as some reviewers have said, and everything to do with basic psychology and human behavior. These techniques and methods for dealing with people are vital to anyone in any field relating to people. This book's ideas are priceless and can easily help anyone be more effective in their personal or business life. Get this book and keep it close at hand. You'll want to refer to it again and again.

This book presents very helpful basic persuasion techniques that can be very effective but really does not go into very much detail about any of them which is not a bad thing. Many people, including myself, are looking for a general persuasion primer, which this book definately is. I was able to pinpoint areas of persuasion psychology I wish to further study using this book. That is not to say that this book does not give enough information to effectively use the techniques explained--it does and I highly recommend this book, as well as all of Lieberman's books, to everyone.

The strategies are practical and in some cases elegant. I have not used any of the strategies yet so can't comment personally on their effectiveness, but they sound completely plausible.

I also found it useful as providing examples of how one might apply theory and psychological research to the real world. I have read some of the research he cites but never thought of it in these ways.

This book is generally a good read, with some practical tips. My only critcism is the book is too simplistic. Human behaviour is very complex and in a vacuum yes many of this strategies would be useful. But in real life they may not work. There a lot factors such as culture, personal beliefs, values that effect human behaviour and to generalize to a set single theories to solve life's problem is a bit ridiculous. The book's language is a little manipulative with words like Never, any Situation, Really, Ever. The Dance of Anger literally changed my life. I was in a heath crisis & self-evaluation when I was given this book & it was like God & my friend had meant for me to be saved by this book. I was feeling so angry & out of control with my parents, my spouse, & feeling distant from my children. This book made me see that many things that I was angry & frustrated about were of my making & not someone else creating the situation. I was literally transformed by Dr Lerner's insightful writings. It truly was an life changing read. I saw myself in so many situations that she wrote about. This book truly changed my life. I read her other books too & was helped so much by all of them...but this book was the key to me being a happier, emotionally healthy & loving person. It is a true gift to women who want a better relationship with the important people of their lives. I can't recommend this book highly enough to all! Think that you don't have an anger problem because you usually keep your temper bottled and just stew and feel resentful? Think again! Feel frustrated and angry at the people around you who, no matter how much you plead, won't change and start behaving the way you want? Here's a solution.

Dr. Harriet Lerner's "The Dance of Anger" provides a whole new approach for women who feel stuck and powerless. Using case studies, Lerner demonstrates ways that women can change their reactions when other people's behavior and expectations upsets them. Her basic premise: You can't change how others treat you--you can only change how you respond. Throughout the book, Lerner provides examples of how women can set boundaries with friends, family members and others so that they can break out of unsatisfying relationship patterns.

The "Thinking in Threes" chapter addresses ways that third parties get pulled into conflicts, and how to better handle these situations by focusing on the source of the conflict.

Lerner's book is an excellent source for learning a "new dance"--a new way of approaching life. One caveat: I question whether this approach would be safe or appropriate for someone dealing with domestic violence or an emotionally abusive relationship. While several experts in that area have said that the reason people abuse is because it works, making the abuse no longer work by using Lerner's approach of changing one's reaction to that behavior could make the abuse escalate. From the training I've received in domestic violence (I'm not a therapist but I do have some professional training in this area), I believe that the most dangerous time for someone in an abusive relationship occurs when she tries to get out of that relationship. Changing one's response to abusive behavior under Lerner's recommendations might make the situation more dangerous.

This book is wonderful. It would be helpful to anyone - men and women alike when have just about any type of relationship problem. She is great about explaining that our relationships - when they are not at an optimal level get stuck in a pattern. Like an overfunctioning parent results in an underfunctioning child...hit home on that one. It isn't an anger management book, really - more that when you feel some anxiety in a relationship - it can be due to anger but more importantly a bad pattern of behavior. Even better, she gives examples of how to begin to "break" the pattern - or how she says "Dance" - you move differently and the dance changes! Great book - helpful for work issues, marital issues, and child rearing. Notes that unresolved issues with first family replay themselves in the family we make for ourself. You will not regret reading this book - written in such a way that is easy to read.

This book had a significant impact on who I am today: a more self confident person who understands that the only person truly in control of my life is: ME!

I love the examples of how to handle conflict situations, as for those of us who grew up without a good example, knowing that we don't deal with situations appropriately is not so helpful if we don't get clues on how to improve.

A friend recommended the book and I have given it to friends since. Read this book if you are not afraid of change, as change is required. Change to be a happier person.

I have read a lot of psychology books, this one is right to the point and spoke my language. It gave me hope and the tools to make my life better.

I had already read "The Anger Habit," and I thought that book changed my life completely. I might have stopped there, having learned so much and been so much more at peace. I'm glad I didn't. "The Dance of Anger" is along completely different lines, but it still has taught me invaluable lessons. Mostly, I am learning what is my responsibility and what is not. I think I had things completely backward, as so many of us do. My whole attitude and perspective have changed. I would bet there are tons of women like me who have gained weight eating the way I did, not much food during the day and compulsive cravings at night. Duh, why didn't I figure this out. I'm smart. Heck, I've purchased and read every diet book out there. Dr. Peeke's book and approach to eating works and it works effortlessly without crazy diets. I've lost over 20 lbs in 2 months without dieting. I merely changed my eating schedule to get most of my calories in before 5pm, no starches after 5pm and no food after 8pm. I even cheat at night a bit by having a piece of fruit or an ice cream bar occasionally. The big surprise - I'm not hungry at night - no cravings. Why? Because I'm eating properly and often during the day, starting with breakfast. Like most people, I'm not always hungry in the morning, but I make it a point to eat a good balance of protein, fat and carbs every 3 hrs from breakfast on until 5pm and I feel wonderful, no hunger, no wild cravings. Normal eating, normal living, no dieting, no binges. This is so easy, so liveable and the weight is dropping steadily.

Buy this book, follow the advice and you will lose weight while eating well. Such a simple change, but what a difference. I can't imagine not eating like this now. It's so nice to feel satisfied and not experience the compulsive night cravings any longer. This is a lifestyle strategy I can live with forever; only wish I had bought her book sooner.

I know this book is designed for women in and over their forties but the program can be accessed by women (and men!) of all ages. Trust me because I have been a patient of Dr. Peeke's for 6 years (I am 20 yrs old--you do the math!) and the strategies for weight loss and maintenece as well as coping strategies for stress she outlines in this book are issues anyone can relate to. I have integrated these strategies and gameplans (along with Dr. Peekes pearls of wisdom--I call them "Peeke-isms") over the years since I began this journey and they have become my lifestyle. Through following her program, I have grown over these six years into a confident, healthy, fit woman (I have also lost and maintained a substantial weight loss--over 80 pounds!). Dr. Peekes program and motivational coaching leap out of this book and any reader will find that they have their own personal lifestyle coach--and she's along with you for the journey of your life!

Reading through these reviews has left me with one question: "Who is Nancy Lloyd and what is her connection to this author?" Does it strike anyone else as just a tad bit too much of a coincidence that every fifth reviewer just happen to have her life changed by reading these two books?
Use these "reviews" with caution folks. Often they are just paid sells pitches and Amazon plays along because...hey, it moves books right?

I bought this book a week ago and have been working with this program for about 5 days. I still haven't done everything perfectly, and I've lost 3/4 of an inch around my waist! I figure out the content of the foods that I cook by using Corinne T. Netzer's The Complete Book of Food Counts, but I figured all the daily gram and calories requirements using this book. After a few weeks, I know that I won't need to look as much up because I'll just know the information, but knowing the difference in my body now, and my body when it was 25, makes a big difference in how I look at food and decide on my choices. YOU SIMPLY CANNOT EAT THE SAME WAY YOU DID WHEN YOU WERE 20, 25, 30 or even 35! YOUR METABOLISM HAS CHANGLED DRASTICALLY. Do yourself a favor and figure out WHY it changed and what to do about it and BUY THIS BOOK.

There may be other and better books on this subject, but this was my first introduction to the topic and I found "Fight Fat After Forty" extremely useful and pragmatic. It addresses my number one diet and exercise struggle--the one against stress. I wasn't bothered by the "menopot" term, since Dr. Peeke outlines in some detail why it is a common problem and health risk. And she makes it clear that you don't need "six pack abs" to address the problem. All in all her suggestions and approach are very do-able and what I especially liked is that she realizes we all don't have personal trainers, unlimited discretionary time and private chefs. I bought this book and read it cover to cover in one night. I couldn't put it down! Self Matters is now helping me to fulfill my potential as person by putting into action Dr. Phil's five step plan. I am shedding my "fictional self" and reaching for my "authentic self" with unabashed fervor. I will no longer find me through others and I encourage you to do the same!!!!! Buy this for you mom, your husband, brother, sister, children, aunts, uncles, cousins, neighbors and anyone else you know who is just okay. It's time for us all to be the AMAZING, WONDERFUL beings we were born to become. I've read Dr. Phil's book Life Strategies and found it worthwhile, but being an ordinary person with no MAJOR problems the book didn't really cause me to make any big changes. These audio tapes are a good review of Life Strategies and a great kick in the butt to look a little deeper. We can all use some external motivation every once in a while. Dr. Phil's presentation style is very easy to listen to and follow.

Seriously, this is one of the best seminars I've ever heard. Dr. Phil's Life Strategies combined with his incredible speaking ability gives listeners the tools to change their life. He kept me so interested in what he was saying that I couldn't wait to hear what he would say next. The primary purpose is for YOU to change the things in YOUR life that need fixing and a hopeful consequence of those actions will also improve your relationship with your Significant Other & Loved Ones.

I can only hope that he will release even more seminars and other self-help books on different topics, as there are many other American epidemics that I'm sure he could help with. Hey Dr. Phil, if you're reading this, how about releasing more self-help books for things such as addiction, over-eating, or self-esteem?

I listened to this audio book after having a mini-nervous breakdown at my job. I hated everyday of my work but I felt trapped by debt & honor. 'Getting Real' showed me that I needed to make a change in my life to find happiness. You need to make a commitment to yourself to be happy & you have to be willing to sacrifice for happiness.

There are many classic Dr. Phil sayings on 'Getting Real' but one statement stood out in my mind. "Are you doing what you're doing today just because you did it yesterday?" That was my life & I sure wasn't "living by design."

I made a commitment to myself to leave my office job in six months & I set a deadline. I didn't know what I would be doing but I knew it wasn't going to be office work. I gave myself six months to brainstorm about my life. What did I want?

I have now returned to school to obtain a degree in my passion: languages & working with people. "Getting Real" was one of many motivators that I had & it was great to have the support.

Truly, though all of what Dr. Phil has to say is common sense (with a little stand up comedy thrown in) in this four cassette edition about your life, and although most of what he says you knew somewhere in your heart, you will learn the most incredible things. I thought our relationship (my husband and mine) was good, I can see I was right, but there were so many ways to make it THE relationship that I never even thought about. I truly think this man could run for President. One thing he mentions is passion, having a passion for the things in life that matter most to you (among having other things) and you can just hear the passion in HIS voice, knowing he believes what he is saying, and not just believes it, but wants YOU to know it. Because it's simple. Because you already know it and have to face it sooner or later. Because it will make your life so much easier. Don't struggle emotionally one more minute, just listen to these cassettes together with a partner, alone on your headset, while resting in the bath, and you will absolutely be amazed by the transformation that sets inside of you almost instantly - all good of course. I've read this book at least 20 times and have purchased copies for teachers and other parents of difficult kids. Whenever I feel burned out with my wonderful but explosive child, this books helps me to pull myself back together and renews my hope and energy. The Collaborative Problem Solving technique works! What a relief after so many failures.

Dr. Greene writes about these kids with affection and respect - and less face it, if your kid is explosive and inflexible, affection and respect from teachers, therapists, doctors, police, etc (maybe even from yourself) has been hard to come by. I can't begin to describe the relief and hope I felt when I finally saw a description of my child that FIT (!) and didn't blame either her or myself for being horribly inadequate people and causing the whole problem in the first place.

If you parent or teach these kids - you need to read this book. Your outlook and actions will change and so will the child.

Excellent description of children (and adults) who are very inflexible, easily frustrated and very difficult to understand. As a teacher and parent of children diagnosed with ADHD and Sensory Integration Dysfunction, I was impressed by the way this book explains how it feels to be the child who is so difficult to manage. I have read many books on difficult children and this is the first one that finally forced me to realize how hard life is for the child and not just the parents or teachers of these kids. The book offers constructive approaches and, even more importantly, tells adults what NOT to do with these kids. Each school library should offer this book to teachers and parents. You won't be disappointed. You will find yourself looking more realistically and sensitively at your explosive child. You'll want to rush to school and start fresh right away!

Finally somebody who understands what we live with. After several years of professionals suggesting that we just needed another parenting class, we were ready to fall apart. "The Explosive Child" acknowledges that children like mine exist and that we have to understand why they are the way they are and how we can start to bring some sanity to our lives. For desperate parents, this book is like oxygen. It provides a great template for dealing with explosive children on a day to day basis. Dr. Greene's book gave me the courage to stop accepting answers that clearly weren't in our daughter's best interest. This gave me the understanding of how to start advocating for my child. If you find yourself thinking that 'something just isn't right with my child' and 'how can I live with this behavior forever' and 'we need help because nobody understands what we live with', then this book belongs in your hands today. We were completely unprepared for the bundle of determination and independence we produced. We had tried many traditional forms of discipline and strategies in attempt to parent the spirited child we have. This book was an excellent recourse recommended by one of the many counselors we have seen. Our situation is similar to many others here. It is very hard to get 'buy in' for the three basket approach from those who are not familiar with it and do not deal with extreme and violent breakdowns. It is very much seen as 'giving in' and can result in much input form others. I have found myself needing to purchase multiple copies for some of our family to help educate them about our new parenting method for our visits. This book did not transform us completely but it really has helped to greatly reduce the hostility, hitting (from our son), yelling (by all) and tension in the household and allowed us to enjoy playing, teaching and simply being with our preschool son. ... First some context on myself: I'm a 24 year old male, employed as a software engineer.

For me, listening to these CDs was enjoyable and productive.

Much of what Wayne Dyer recommends, positive thinking, and an unselfish, ego-free outlook, were not a new idea to me. But it helps to hear these ideas again from such a dynamic individual who provides numerous examples of it working in his own life.

He is a bit unorganized in instructing specific ways to help yourself live the right way. For instance, it isn't until the fourth disc that he specifically mentions meditation as an essential daily practice. If it is so essential, why not emphasize it earlier on? I find Deepak Chopra's "Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" to be better focused in this regard.

Overall though, if you view his lectures as inspirational, albeit rambling, advice from a wise, "high on life" man, you won't be dissapointed.

The Power of Intention was of great help to me as a parent. Dr. Dyer's concepts and ideas brought a certain amount of clarity to my thinking that allowed me to see through some of my "baggage" as a parent. If you have ever seen Dr. Dyer on PBS or cable, you know that he challenges your beliefs about the simple things we do in life. When I came to Amazon.com to buy this book, another reviewer suggested I get Matt Pasquinilli''s book, The Child Whisperer at the same time. The two are not alike in many ways, but very complimentary in their seperate messages. I feel like I am a better parent because Dr. Dyer taught me specific ways to apply the co-creating principles of intention, and Pasquinilli taught me how to communicate directly and intentionally with my children.

This 6 CD set by Wayne Dyer is a nice supplement to his latest book, The Power of Intention. I've been reading Dyer's books and listening to his tapes and CDs since the middle 1970s. Each one continues to build on the previous one.

For those who are long time students of Dyer's, you are going to recognize several familiar stories and quotations from his earlier works, although he intertwines them with his latest focus on the power on intention. Since I have read and listened to everything Dyer has published, I always wondered if I'm going to gain any new insights with each new release. Surprisingly, I'm never disappointed. There's always a few new gems that I learn from each work.

This CD set (as well as the hardcover book) are opening my eyes to a new level in Dyer's teachings. Each person will discover their own insights. The light bulb moment (or satori, as Dyer calls it) is probably different for each reader/listener. I can guarantee that there's enough new material in the CD set and the book to make it worth your while to get one or the other (or both, as I have).

CD 1: Dyer explains what the field of intention is and what it means to be connected to it. He speaks of the necessity of getting past ego dominance in the meaning of God-realization.

First of all, to answer another reviewer's concern about how the author gained his knowledge, John Gray holds a Ph.D. and is extremely well respected around the world in his area of expertise - the psychology of human realtionships. His qualified opinions are not based simply on personal experience or opinion, but on proven, scientific fact and theory. His acclaimed books have been published and sold by the millions, world-wide, in forty languages.

Like his renowned book, "Men are from Mars, Woman are from Venus" this book is an insightful look into the psychology of the male-female relationship. This one, however, draws on the behaviours before marriage or a commitment has been made. As Grey points out, normally there is a five step sequence of events that takes place when dating: attraction, uncertainty, exclusivity, intimacey and engagement. As a counsellor who has studied psychology and human behaviour, this is one book I have recommended to many couples and received nothing but positive feedback, not once have I heard a negative comment.

This author deserves abundant praises for his research, expertise and writing ability. His books are an opportunity for both male and female readers to learn and understand more about themselves and their personal relationships. He adds a slight touch of humour to his unique writing style, and from the very first page, the reader cannot help but feel, "this is a person I can trust." Based on the world-wide success of books, obviously a multitude of other readers around the globe agree. His books are not "sexist" as some believe; they are an actual account based on fact from a psychological perspective.

For anyone who complains about the length of the book, a shorter version would not do the book justice. Each page is a key component to the overall picture, and if you fail to see it's purpose, you are missing out on a valuable part of the overall analyis.

I highly recommend "Mars and Venus on a Date" to anyone who is dating, regardless of age. Gray has a terrific presentation style and the principles of the book are not limited to any particular age group. Even if you are not currently dating, read the book anyway; it contains some insightful and priceless observations.

There definitely seems to be a market saturation with dating and relationship books these days. But before you do a "Bridget Jones" and buy every single one of them, stop right there--buy "Mars and Venus on a Date" and you won't have to buy another dating guide ever again. This is a good book for ANYONE in the dating market--no matter what age you are, whether you are divorced or widowed, or what religion or set of values you follow. Most people today have no clue how to date properly in order to build lasting and loving relationships, and I was one of them before I read this book. I started reading it after having a disastrous dating situation in college and realized that I needed a little guidance in the romance depatment. This book was like a sudden revelation--suddenly all of my questions about male behavior and the dating process were answered! The book describes the five stages of dating and fills you in on how things are supposed to progress. It also gives you valuable advice about the male and female roles in dating. Though Dr. Gray emphasizes traditional dating roles (the man is the pursuer, the woman shouldn't call, etc.), he explains the logic behind them so that even a feminist such as myself would agree with them.

What makes this book stand out from the rest is that is focuses on building loving relationships and not just sex. Never once does John Gray say that sex should be a part of every relationship. In fact, he even says that too often people have sex way too soon, which often sabotages the relationship. As someone who wants to wait until marriage to have sex, I found this very refreshing. In fact, Gray gives some positive examples of couples who waited until marriage to have sex. He makes a clear point that you don't have to go all the way to experience intimacy.

But most importantly, this book works. I have now been dating someone for about 5 weeks now, and things are going great. Without John Gray's wisdom and guidance, this relationship may have ended up like the last one.

So what are you waiting for...go buy this book!

The first 2/3 of the book was OK, with balanced "points of view" and "how-to's" for both men and women. Some of the information was interesting, explanatory, and useful; some was not.

But then the author began giving unbalanced treatment, primarily telling women how they ought to behave and what they ought to say. The message was that a man has a large and fragile ego, and that a woman should support his ego. She should never disagree with him, except "playfully". In public, she should paint him as a white knight, regardless of what really happened.

Perhaps it was just the author's writing style, but most of his examples, supposedly of real couples he'd observed or counseled, seemed made-up.

Finally, at the end of the book, the author insults the reader's intelligence with an idiotic, redundant, and unnecessary list of 101 places to look for a mate. Very patronizing.

John Gray's "Mars and Venus On a Date" is a solid piece of work, with well-reasoned insights into the dynamics of male-female romantic relationships.

One note, though, to men who are shy, and might see the book as a guide to learning how to get dates more easily. Shyness is not really addressed here. This is by no means meant as a criticism, but given the notoriety of the "Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus" books, many men may wonder if this kind of help is being offered here.

The closest Gray comes to touching on shyness is when he says that many men get tongue-tied when approaching women they're attracted to, and that usually the best advice is to say the most simple thing ("Hi, I'm John," etc.). He also briefly touches on the various ways women might flirt, and the ways to tastefully send out non-verbal cues that you're interested. This territory is covered in a total of maybe three paragraphs, at different points in the book. One of the last sections touches on dozens of places to meet your soulmate.

The book is great for people who don't have any trouble in the initial, attraction phase. But for those who can't get to that first approach, this may not be the best place to start.

I'd like to share my experience with the Mind Magic Kit with other readers. I've used the cassettes for relaxation purposes ever since the kit first came out in 1998. I never tire of their clear and uncluttered text and Dr. Mumford's voice. Of course, I have to admit that all of Dr. Mumford's books are a source of joy to me. I work in the healthcare field teaching Hatha Yoga and love his books because he combines his vast knowledge of ancient traditions with the very latest findings in neuroscience. It was his very first book, Psychosomatic Yoga, published in the early sixties which turned me into an avid Mumford reader. The Mind Magic Kit, too, is brief and energizing - not one extraneous word. I was shocked to read in one review that the Mind Magic Kit should be banned and wondered whether we had read the same book. Clearly the reviewer had a problem which needed medical attention, and I hope that he is well. I also hope that he might wish to retract his negative review. We are talking here of a concise little book packed with loads of useful information not only for persons wishing to 'destress' but also for anyone working in the health care field. I have read a couple of the reviews about Mind Magic Kit and I am 'amused' and 'surprised' at the 'ignorance' displayed. The claims that the book should be 'banned' is so ridiculous that these people deserve no comment and the reviewers should consider seeking psychiatric assistance for deep seated anxieties. Perhaps this is an occasion to say that a minority of people when attempting relaxation experience anxiety at first, but that's well far away, from some ridiculous statements I have read in one of the reviews! Mr Mumford's material is always safe and interesting. I have met with him numerous times and attended a comprehensive workshop outlining the books techniques. As with all his works the emphasis is on very practical methods backed by his decades of practical experience and extremely well researched and implemented knowledge. My own experience as a practitioner of breathing and prana vidya (energy transformation) techniques for over 25 years shows me it is only possible to have a crisis if you don't follow the instructions in a graduated and patient way...if all else fails READ the instructions!!! I recommend John's work to anyone, be it practitioner or teacher, beginner or advanced...

Dr. Mumford's Mind Magic Kit is a very valuable tool for inner exploration, personal growth and relaxation. It enables virtually anyone to experience the benefits of biofeedback at minimal cost and on their own time. It provides readers with simple, effective and powerful techniques that have withstood the test of time. Dr. Mumford is trained in the Hindu Tantric tradition and Western medicine; the material is presented in terms that are easily understood by Westerners unfamiliar with Eastern traditions or Western, New Age ideas. Though I am an experienced meditator, with a variety of different practices at my disposal, I use the Mind Magic kit on a regular basis; thus it is suitable for all. I highly recommend it.

I have not only used Dr. Mumford's techniques as presented in the Mind Magic Kit but have passed them on to literally thousands of students and friends with my unreserved recommendation.

I was amused rather than disappointed to read the negative reviews which described: 1. a crisis of body temperature reaching boiling point and 2. Dr. Mumford as a successful con man.

The first reviewer not only describes a physiological impossibility, but ascribes a poorly defined crisis directly to the techniques contained in the Kit. That reviewer may fall into that .000001% of humanity who are in fact allergic to themselves, as it is deeper contact with your self which is provided by the methods.

The second reviewer describes Dr. Mumford as a con man. This assessment is contradicted by the body of the man's work which is highly respected in academic and professional circles, by the subsequent reviews from those whom he has helped, and by his life itself. While not a simple man by any stretch of the imagination, his life IS simple (read unostentatious, frugal and sincere) and he is a brilliant and committed human being.

There is an inevitable similarity between the techniques he elucidates in the Kit and those presented in my own book: Mastery of Stress (Llewellyn USA 1999), not because they are both from the same publisher, but because they are drawn from impeccable sources.

Loehr and Schwartz have individually worked most of their careers on researching how humans achieve peak performance, and have together written a summary of what they've discovered to date. What impressed me about this book is that it's 1) based on actual research rather than theory, and 2) written in a manner that is very easy to understand and implement.

Loehr's work in the past centered around seeking the source of human capacity - what makes it possible for some people to perform at the highest levels even under extraordinary pressure. He's noteworthy for having started an institute that has worked over the years with many top athletes including Pete Sampras, Dan Jansen, Mark O'Meara, and Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini among others. Schwart's background has involved understanding the nature of wisdom - what constitutes a satisfying, productive and well-lived life. Together they've developed a model for peak living that combines the physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.

They state that which is obvious but not followed well by most of us Americans - that without physical energy and health it's impossible to follow the rest of our dreams and ambitions in life. In the physical realm their analysis specifically of top athletes shows that peak performance involves both a willingness to push the body to the limit, and also hugely importantly regular periods of rest and recovery. They apply this to the "corporate athlete" who is their target audience for the book with the following advice - seek out stressful situations that push your range of psychological muscles - AND find time regularly for recovery. They have specific recommendations for incorporating rest and recovery throughout every day. They say that in the work world we tend to live linearly - meaning working straight through long days - which results in low energy periods/burnout/unreleased stress/etc. I completely identified with this section of the book and am going to use many of their concepts successfully tested on successful athletes and include them in my business day planning.

The book acknowledges that without a personal big "why" driving what you do in life having physical energy is pointless - with the opposite holding true as well. Plentiful physical energy without a reason for existence goes nowhere and a crystal clear purpose can't be lived out without ample physical energy to make it happen. As with all of the book the chapter on spiritual energy is filled with real life examples of people who have been through their institute and whom they've helped develop a game plan for overall life performance.

The chapters on emotional and mental energy are really the glue that holds the physical and spiritual together - and are also interesting.

The book finishes with a "resource" section that includes a summary of the main points they've made, worksheets on connecting with a big purpose and on connecting the small habits (little muscles) into bigger habits and successes (large muscles).

A great read - stimulating - thought provoking - and possessing that rarest of information in today's world - some actual wisdom.

THE POWER OF FULL ENGAGEMENT has the potential to change your life with one single insight: that managing ENERGY, not time, is the key to high performance and personal renewal. While I have as many hours in a day as I had in my 20s, I have to admit that my energy and productivity levels had dropped over the years. This book explains how to increase your energy levels through tapping four primary sources of energy: physical (and includes strategies for "fueling the fire" through exercise, nutrition, and sleep), emotional ("transforming threat into challenge"), mental ("appropriate focus and realistic optimism"), and spiritual ("having a 'why' to live"). The training system this book espouses asks the reader to define their purpose, to face the truth about how they're managing their energy now, and to take action through positive rituals. Since learning and putting into practice some of the ideas in this book, I have managed to at least DOUBLE my energy level during the day as well as my effectiveness in accomplishing the things that are most important to me. If you like to find real reason's for improving and growing your ability this is a great book to help with it. They base their ideas on values and on coaxing readers to solving their problems with real world solutions. The concept of building rituals into your daily life is very helpful and the tools and ideas are presented in a logical fashion with good examples from recent times. Hearing the examples of people involved in the attack on the World Trade Center was very influential.

Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz offer a lot of solid, common sense advice. The authors recommend going to bed and getting up at a consistent time - not exactly Ben Franklin's "early to bed, early to rise," but close. They recommend regular exercise. They say it's good to work and to rest, and each has its place. They say to examine yourself and try to see yourself as others see you. In other words, they recommend many time-honored techniques of physical, mental and spiritual growth,combined with prioritizing how you use your energy and how you recharge your batteries. I have listened to this on tape many times and in the process of ordering the CD decided to write a review because i see this is unreviewed. I have listened to a variety of stress-relief and this is simply the best I have ever encountered. First, Susie's voice is simply wonderful. Not cutesy or overdone, but like your best woman friend pointing out to you what you already know. Second, many tapes are ok for a listen but feel wearing or repetitive on repeated listens. Not here. Most important, i have listened to this frequently in times of high stress and it has never failed to help me relax and feel more peaceful.

Also, there are at least two levels of "present." While you can find inhere a beautiful reference to "present" as a gift, you can also view the present as the "now" that we always have with us.

I just ordered more for my friends! I've been raving about the power of this
relaxation meditation. I always feel so energized and rested after
listening--the whole process is so refreshing. I used this CD through my
pregnancy to help me relax, calm my fears, and send positive energy and
health to my baby. I was so happy during my pregnancy. Especially amazing
benefits came the first week we came home--a stressful time and without much
sleep. I would be so overtired that when I was able to lie down--I couldn't
sleep. One night I played this CD 3 times (between feedings) and sometimes
I don't think I got past the first minute without falling asleep. One of
the first days we were home, after a full day of visitors, my husband
ordered me to put my headset on and listen to it! My son will be 3 weeks
tomorrow . Now I am just elated to have this precious baby and I know if I
do start to feel depressed or depleted, Susie' Mantell's "Your Present: A
Half-Hour of Peace" will help us through!

Wow! I rarely write reviews, but I have to comment on this one. If you are looking for something in this genre, look no further. It's not just her perfect voice for this type of recording, but also the way it was recorded, she is very, very clear and yet very quiet and not obtrusive. Everything about this is just about perfect. I bought this and another tape, and fortunately heard this first. The other is a great disappointment, with the woman's rough voice and too-fast talking. Don't take a chance, buy this tape.

After reading all the online reviews for this CD I was really anticipating its arrival. Once I popped it into the CD player I was kind of disappointed. There is about a 5-minute intro into the meditation, which is fine at first, but there is no way to skip the track and go write to the meditation. And well, for the meditation itself, Susie does have a nice voice and the music is relaxing but I just thought a lot of the stuff she was saying was very touchy-feely. I was hoping for more of a guided meditation but her exercises are more of a visualization and kind of require you to participate so if you want something to just zone out to and nap or sleep then well it does not offer much in that way. You have to stay some what conscience to follow here visualization and sometimes her terms like "exhale all the Grey smoke from your body" ...that was a strange way to describe stress. The CD seems to have won an award and be highly acclaimed but I feel it is over exemplified and does not really deliver. If you are looking for a good visualization CD and you like the touchy freely stuff then this is for you but if you are looking more for something just to listen and zone out to then I recommend looking elsewhere.

are what you will find in the pages of this book. One afternoon when I was cleaning out my storeroom, I came across a copy of "The Power Of Positive Thinking" in paperback. The edition was from 1956 and had been my father's. I opened the old, yellowed, dog-eared copy and began reading and found that Peale had taken the concepts of an earlier work by Dale Carnegie and elaborated on them with a spiritual twist.

This book can be life-changing, period. If you read it with an open mind and heart and follow the simple and very practical exercises in its pages, you will be changed forever in a very special way. It has stood the test of time and critics, both from the "anything goes, new age" people who say it is too conservative to the "Bible-pounding fundamentalists" who decry its message as heretical. Peale shows us a God who loves us, who is more than ready to give us "every good thing." Yet, if you are not religious in the conventional sense, you will find a new way of thought that will bring peace and harmony to your life through your greatest gift: the power of your mind.

More than just a book, it is a guide to living your life with a maximum of joy. I thank Dr. Peale for his wonderful gift to all of us, "The Power Of Positive Thinking." (P.S. This book will change your life! You will never go through any situation the same way again! Your thinking will change, your actions will change and all for the better! This book reminds me of the fact that anything is possible with God! I almost didn't buy this book because of some comments I'd read on certain Christian websites about the author. But I had the condensed version at home and loved it, so after reading all 45 reviews on this book with 99.9% of them being in favor of the book I went ahead and bought it and I'm VERY glad I did! A Peale classic!!! Another spring cleaning survivor! My copy has been rained on etc. but not ruined! I'm not throwing this one out.

I first read this many, many moons ago in college. My father had passed away during that time and I was unsure I would be able to complete my studies. My mind was flooded with so many worries. My sister gave me this book to read and whenever I would regress to my woe is me mode of thinking, she would snap, "Go read your positive thinking book."!

I've since read other Norman Vincent Peale books and they're all written on the same lines. I would classify them as self-help books but upon a christian foundation; Norman Vincent Peale was a protestant pastor of Marble Collegiate Church in New York City. The power of positive thinking was published in 1952.

My only criticism, and the reason NVP fell from a 5 star grace to 4 is that his ideas fit too much into the traditional American idea of working your way to success and not into the biblical one. The goal of the christian is to become more christ-like in character, not to become a financial success in the American marketplace. But surely there are some people who are genuine christians and are successful that way. But the main thing is the inner character which should reflect Christ's.

The sixth chapter on "fuming and fretting" contains my personal favorite verse to meditate on when my mental balance is being tipped: "Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee"-Isaiah 26:3. Obviously, I accepted and applied Norman Vincent Peale's practical advice to meditate on and repeat that verse as an antidote to such a mental state. It works for me but might not work for others, if you do not fully comprehend what that 'Thee' (God) is all about. If you don't know who the biblical God is, grab a Bible and read! It's the only book I've read ten times from cover to cover.

This book learns you techniques for positive thinking, based on belief in God and the techniques of praying. The main message that this book wants to bring to you is that if you want to improve your life, visualize what you want and pray for it.
I know a lot of people who found extra power in this book to fight against the misfortunes of life. If you belief in God and want to explore how praying can improve your life, I can strongly advice this book. But this is where the book stops. A better title for this book would be "the power of praying", or "the power of believe". The word thinking in the title is confusing, thinking is more then praying and believing.

Personally I agree with the fact that the way you think, can influence your life a lot, but it is also important to learn how you should think. Especially, you should learn to take the responsabilities for what you think and how it influences how you feel. This book fails on learning you these consequences of your thinking. And this is essential in order to take the correct actions to improve your life. I certainly agree that belief in God (and pray to God) can help, but you definetely need some additional techniques, not found in this book. Books doing and excellent job here are the following books : "The Resilience Factor: 7 Essential Skills for Overcoming Life's Inevitable Obstacles" by Andrew Shatte, Karen Reivich and
"Your Erroneous Zones" by Wayne Dyer. Remark that these books present techniques independent of your belief in God. I would strongly advice these books. If you are a believer in God, you can buy "The power of Positive thinking" in addition to the books I just mentioned.

I have bought this book hoping to find some tools to improve my memory. Instead I had to listen to two hours of a monotonous drill on one basic idea - that remembering is better if there is an association with a movement, picture, colour, feeling, etc. in our brain. Although true, that idea is not even original. You can find it in books by Tony Buzan published more than 20 years earlier!

The title of the book almost makes me lough - Advanced Mega Memory! A nicely packaged junk food. If you are really interested in improving your memory, in how the brain works and in learning how to use it, then I can highly recommend books by the above mentioned Tony Buzan - Use Both Sides Of Your Brain and Speed Reading.

I've studied Kevin's techniques and find them very useful. These methods work well with people from all walks of life. I've used them with children, adults, dyslexics and have seen very good results. Some people are resistent to these methods because of the apparent absurdity, but don't let pride stand in your way.If you want to memorize names, dates, events, outlines, lists, words...a little more easily, then get the book.

Advanced Mega Memory is great. It teaches you great techniques to memorize any number or numbers and recall them without a mistake. It also teaches you to memorize playing cards. I would highly recommend this to anyone who works in areas where remembering numbers is needed.

I purchased the 2 cassette version knowing full well that it is much lighter than the 9 cassette version also available. I figured it was worth the dead presidents to find out if this method is worthwhile or not. The prices have dropped considerably and they are now available at the Amazon zShop.

I enjoyed this book for the wisdom it contained. Whether one is part of an office team, a charitable organization or on a sports team, it is not always as easy as one might think to develop strong teamwork. There are those who can never master the feat of being a team player and those, if you are fortunate to find them, who excel both as a team player and independent worker. The author has demonstrated the 17 essential qualities of a strong team player. Learning specific skills can be much easier than learning new habits or changing negative personal qualities which have often developed over a lifetime. Employers should remember to take that fact into consideration during the hiring process; you need to match an individual's qualities to the job to achieve the desired result. Not everyone possesses the essential qualities to be a team player. To the book's credit, it contains accurate and proven theories on creating a strong team. The author bases his theories on such factors as self-descipline, competence and being prepared to adapt and change your ideas and actions.

The minor downside of the book is the various quotes by well-known successful people. They are interesting but they have appeared in print so many times before that they come across as "classic cliches". Also, the book is relatively short and it would have been twice as interesting if the author had expanded on his words of advice in more detail. Overall, the positives far outweigh the negatives. The book is well worth reading, and the reader will likely find the stories quite inspirational.

John Maxwell has written an easy-to-read, easy-to-apply book on teamwork. Anyone beginning a new team or taking the leadership of a team already in progress is sure to find information from this book helpful and applicable. Beware, however, that Maxwell is beginning to repeat the same stories and lessons from his previous books. These stories and lessons can be good reminders although it may be time for Mr. Maxwell to research other people and companies in the leadership field.

I thought that the book was very easy to read and it's shorter length makes it very accessible to those with very busy lives.

I really enjoyed the little stories and the descriptions of the elements that compose the 17 qualities were very well written. The main thing I enjoyed about the book was not that it taught me a lot of things I didn't know, but that it put those things together in a more coherent picture and made me ask myself some hard questions about how I can be a better team player and whether or not I've neglected some areas.

I find I perform at a much higher level when I keep these sorts of ideas in mind as I plan my tasks. This book is small enough to travel well and profound enough to keep pushing me to higher levels.

Hi,

I just wanted you to know that this tape, entitled Embracing Your Dark Side, is not an audio program, but a recording of an interview I did with New Dimensions several years ago. While it is a great interview (I gave it five stars because Michael Toms is a five-star interviewer), I have heard feedback that some people were disappointed because they were not clear about this fact before they purchased it. If you like interviews, you will like this tape. And if you're looking for something more in-depth, I would recommend that you buy The Dark Side of the Light Chasers or The Secret of the Shadow on audio book.

I attended one of David's seminars in 1986. As a result, I was able to successfully manage 101 concurrent projects, finishing on time and under budget. Fast forward to 2001. I keep this book by my side at all times (David publish it in Ebook form so it's easier to carry!). The company I'm with now wonders how I get the "impossible" projects done. Using David's techniques in the book, it seems like I can complete a full work day in fewer hours because I know what all my "next actions" are, and do them promptly. Gives me a lot of worry free time.

This is a book you "DO" not just read. Be prepared to work when you start out, but when the initial work is done, that's when the fun begins.

I cleaned my inbox and email box of 300 items in less than 15 minutes, filtering out the junk, the things that needed immediate attention, and the "someday maybe" things (like buying my first Harley).

This works for my personal life too. No more missed anniversaries, birthdays, phone calls, errands, etc.

Do you ever think about work projects at home? Do you ever think about home projects when you're at the office? Ever worry about that phone call you need to make or that errand you need to run? Forget it! Get the book. It's awesome. Get the book - period. If you don't, you deserve your stress.

I manage a team of twenty, in a very stress-filled IT environment. We juggle multiple projects with overlapping deadlines all the time. This book taught me far more than the well known time management guides and gurus. I learned to put EVERYTHING - my work life, personal life, dream life (to be a millionaire without being the weakest link or swallowing bugs!) into one place, and organize it all based on me - my life, current job, etc. I also used it to help my team. We now breeze through our deadlines, with lots of productivity and very little stress. We are able to work long hours when needed, and take time off when needed. Hopefully, future releases will bring a companion workbook and this book unabridged on tape or CD. FYI - Mr. Allen has a wonderful web site ... where you can sign up for his free weekly newsletter and continue to learn and grow. He also lists lots more helpful tips, etc. on the web site that you can download and share with your peers and staff members. I urge anyone who is feeling overwhelmed in their life and career to give this process a try. You will be very glad you did.

The real gist of this book is this;

First, tangibly ALL your thoughts to do something must be somewhere in order for you to PHYSICALLY apply it. Hence, you must write them down or put them all (stuff) somewhere, notes, post-it, napkins, etc., ANYTHING, just make it physically tangible. This is the only way for us to now LOGICALLY apply it. Because we are physical creatures, we must see our thoughts physically also. Down one.

Number two: when all of this is done, get the little ones out of the way, hence the "two-minute rule". Anything under two minutes DO IT NOW. DAM! (David Allen Method) yeah!!!

That's basically the "d.a.m." (pardon the pun) method. For details and even a better understanding buy or borrow the book.

When you think about it, it's all about logic. Delineate the process, divide, then conquer. Sort of like eating a big steak, you have to cut it to make it chewable, then taste, and decide to swallow, chew, or just spit it out, and before you know it, it's gone! It's funny we never applied this logic to our business, maybe below will explain why!

One thing that bugs me is that if something takes 2 minutes and we now need to do it now, there is one section about a guy going through 800 e-mails. If each one took two minutes, the e-mail "project" then took more than 26 hours!!! He didn't mention that in the book! Should he then delegate it, defer it, dump it, or simply call the waiter??? Note: vomiting is NOT an option!

I have read both books first from the library and only bought the paperback of Allens second book, Ready for Anything.

I am now buying the hardcover edition for this book because I plan to use it over and over. I have been a student of effective work flow for 15 years and this is one of the best methods I have found to clear your work surfaces and your mind to get down to creative, fun productive activities.

I was one of those people who looked like I had things under control, and wasn't far from it, but my cupboards, drawers and email files were full of junk and felt like a ball and chain. I heard about this book at an Optimal Thinking seminar and decided to buy it. I knew it was in my best interest to clean up the junk and proceeded with Dave Allen's system. If anything took less than two minutes to resolve, I did it on the spot. I have to say that almost everything is in place now. I feel free of a huge load and am proud that I took control of it. This is a terrific book. I recommend it if you want a simple system to get things done.
