5-0 out of 5 stars As Usual, Cutting Edge Information
I've been a reader and fan of Barry Sears since his first book and never fail to learn something from his books.Sears was the first to really pull together various forms of cutting edge information--caloric restriction, minimal consumption of bad grains, restricted amounts of saturated fats--and blend it into a usable, realistic program.Even if one tries other "diets" on the market, there are still take-aways from the Zone that will help optimize the value of other programs, there is that much information available. His new book provides new insights on his Zone prescription with updated research and information for the reader.

For "Love to Read", just a couple of suggestions:

- Canola Oil is extracted from rapeseed and there is some controversy as to the safety of this product.Rapeseed byproducts are used for fuel, soap, lubricants and synthetic rubber base, and in magazines to make the pages "glossy".Hence the concern over safety for human consumption.
- Dr. Sears notes that humans can only utilize a certain percentage of flaxseed oil. Some researchers note it ranges between 10 - 20%.Per Sears, you'd have to consume quite a bit of flaxseed oil to get the (current) recommendations of Omega 3 which would be detrimental to your weight.
- The UC Berkeley Wellness Letter (2003) noted that primrose oil has no proven properties and may have potentially toxic side affects in consumed in too high of dosages.

Regarding Sears "selling" his products via his books, well, that is just good ole capitalism.Body for Life/EAS, Udo Eramus/Udo's Oi, etc., are no different.;0)

3-0 out of 5 stars Big profit for the author
This book made a lot of sense when it was talking about eating more vegetables and less heavy starchy foods. But then when he started talking about oils and suggested olive oil, I wondered why he didn't mention Canola oil because I've heard it's better than vegetable oil too. Then he has a chapter about how the olive oil you find in the store isn't any good, in fact, he says none of the good stuff leaves Italy. It's as if no oil is good except one brand, which ends up being the one he sells on the internet. Then I read about the fish oil supplements. The book says they are all very poisonous except the ones listed on a website, which happens to list ones sold by him. He doesn't mention other ways of getting Omega-3 fatty acids, such as flax oil or evening primrose oil. I started to wonder whether this book singles out some foods as the ONLY healthy brands of food because the author sells them. On the other hand, it could be that he just went out of his way to make them available because he believes in them. Wish I knew.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing
Few books prompt me to want to TELL THE WORLD because it may make a big difference in the quality of life of anyone who reads it.This is the first book I've read about the Zone diet, inflammation and fish oil supplements so it was all news to me and makes sense. An excellent companion book is Zone Meals in Seconds which enabled me to apply the theory using recipes, canned/frozen food, and even restaurant visits.

A high cholesterol report and watching Morgan Spurlock's movie, Super Size Me, prompted me to pursue some changes in my the month since entering the Zone I have discontinued Sudafed use (after years on it) and my husband is off of glucosamine and pain free.Plus, we are not hungry, have energy, and sleep better than before.Don't underestimate the health effects of the right food if you are currently in pain or taking any medications this book "might help, won't hurt".

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading
If you have never read any of the Zone books, then this is a must read. But even if you have remained current through the last book Omega Rx, there is new information presented here.

As you read through this work, it appears apparent that the author has researched this topic and does an excellent job of presenting the information in an easy to read format.

For those who tried the Zone in the past, but had difficulty with "blocks", Dr Sears has added a point system that may make it easier to follow.

Keep in mind that any changes to your medical program should be discussed with your physician, as they may change the dosages and mix of medications that you may be on. Even if you are not on any medications, it is best to work with an "open minded" Physician so that you can maximize your health benefits.

As a direct beneficiary of Dr Sear's work, it is nice to know that there is a program like this out there. It is also reassuring that the work outlined here is now being substantiated by other sources and research.

It is true that our nation is experiencing from an epidemic of obesity. The number of adults suffering from Type 2 Diabetes increases each year. Even if this program reduces the incidence of inflammatory disease by 1%, it will result in substantial savings for our future health care industry. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Change in my Perception Already!
I had begun reading this wonderful book days ago. Even though I am still reading chapter 3, I can already feel a change in my perception. God, I now realize, is the only reality. And because God is Love, then Love is the only reality. Everything else is illusion. All else is illusion. Never before has the Love of God been so clarified. Thank you, Ms. Williamson, for your book and your insight. No doubt I will become a serious pupil in the Course in Miracles after the completion of Marianne Williamson's inspiring book A Return to Love. Thank you,, for allowing readers to submit reviews. A Return to Love has changed my life.

It took me a long time to get around to writing this review, because I was afraid I wouldn't be able to think of enough powerful adjectives to describe this book! Not only is this book so full of love and compassion, it directs you to the plain ole common sense approach to solve problems and live your life to the fullest. And believe it or not, the common sense approach is simple, but the approach we usually try to take is complicated. This book is the "common sense, encouragement, loving direction, and compassion that your mom should have given you, but didn't". I encourage everyone to read it, even if you only read a couple of pages a day. As I read this book, I felt Marianne was the mother, teacher, guidance counselor, and friend that I never had. I love her advice! Love is the answer and love solves all problems. From the seed of love derives all positivity: self-confidence, love for others, being humble, going after dreams, being modest etc. Marianne's advice is the advice I should have received as I grew up. If we all received that advice, the world would be a better place. My world is a better place because of Marianne's loving and compassionate advice. That's why I advise everyone to read this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars The most Mind Stirring, Soul Touching Audio Book EVER!
I first came upon this Audio book about 8 years ago, and have yet to find an Audio book that reaches as deep into you as this one does. A Return to Love is a great Book, but it is a truly incredible Audio book! The tone of her voice, and the way it's spoken is so PERFECT, that you hear every word, and feel she is talking directly to "YOU"! I have listened to 100's of Audio books over the years, and STILL have not found anything close to this one. Deepak, Millman, Lucado, Dyers, Bach and as much as I hate to say it, even Mariannes other audios don't hold the magic this one does. If someone has found an audio that gets as deep into your soul as this one does, PLEASE write me and let me know what it is.
If you have not listened to this audio book yet, and are looking for some spiritual enlightenment, you have no idea what your missing out on here! Buy the Tape, even if you have read the book!!! Time and time again, I have gone back and listened to this tape, and it never loses a bit of the magic I felt the first time I heard it. This Audio will remind you of so much you have forgotten through the years. The best Audio book I have EVER, EVER listened too!
I have given these Tapes out many, many times as gifts to friends and got many people to listen to them, and I have yet to come across anyone that is not entirely blown away and touched deeply by them. This is an Audio Book you will listen to AGAIN, AND AGAIN AND AGAIN. ~~~~~ "MARIANNE, PLEASE DO AN UNABRIDGED VERSION OF THIS AUDIO BOOK!!!!"

4-0 out of 5 stars Brings high and lofty ideals down to earth.
A book called "A Course In Miracles" is unique in it's degree of wisdom. But, people sometimes experience it as an affront to their current belief system.Though it's authors have great wisdom, they didn't master 'people skills'.The book can leave some wondering "This isn't a cult thing, is it?".Because, the 'high and lofty' ideals can feel "too good to be true".That's where "A Return To Love" comes in.Marianne Williamson brings these high and lofty ideals 'down to earth'.
In ACIM, the 'personality/individuality/emotion' element is nowhere near as well represented as the 'spirit/God' element is.But when your 'personal/individual/emotional' side is included equally well, the void and alienation feeling disappears.Though this book isn't perfect in this respect, it is still far less intimidating than ACIM.Which is not to say that ACIM ideals intend for our individual self to be left out.No, it's merely a communication gap that the authors haven't quite yet accounted for.M.Williamson is a mediator between ACIM ideals and a majority population.Only a minority of people could go 'straight to' ACIM.Because of "A Return To Love", many people who initially felt ACIM to be in competition with their own wisdom, will now feel less threatened.Williamson is moreso a 'people person' whose book is a beneficial option/addition to "A Course In Miracles".The best offering of "A Return To Love" though, is its approach to 'positive thinking'.(Though its not always 'refered' to, it does underlay the book).
"Positive thinking" really is neither 'positive' nor 'negative'.It is 'truthful' thinking.(Williamson shows her faith in this fact via her sombre expression on the cover photo). She is well aware that 'love' equally accompanies our sad emotions as it does our happy ones. She does away with the 'sentimental' definition of peace and harmony, replacing it with a permanently helpful 'unconditional' definition.
In closing: This author brings a very lofty and intellectual piece of work down to earth, making it easier to relate to.Though not perfect, it does aim wiser than many self-help books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow !
Praise to this book! I was just not expecting to have it change my life! I walked into the bookstore looking for something to help me with my ocassional destructive behavior and prayed to be led to the right one. I picked this edition up, sat on the floor, and was totally taken aback with just the introduction! I devoured the book in a short time and have decided to take a second run at a much slower pace. This book helped me to put "my purpose" and my self destructive behavior in a much clearer light. My husbands tells me he has definately seen a change in my personality. I know I've changed - I feel it - I feel wonderful! ... Read more

Book Description

Waking from the Trance
By Stephen Wolinsky

Have you ever felt that your thoughts, feelings, perceptions, and memories – everything you’ve known to be "you" – might be just the surface of something far more expansive? That somehow, there might be a way to "wake up" to an entirely new revelation of the world and of yourself? In 1977, a young psychotherapist named Stephen Wolinsky left his practice to answer these questions. His search would lead him beyond the roots of modern psychology and the contemplative traditions of the world to India’s legendary sage Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj. On Waking from the Trance, you are invited to learn what evolved from Wolinsky’s quest: a revolutionary new understanding of the nature of consciousness that can help us to see beyond the inner structures that limit our awareness.
Here is an opportunity to join the author of Trances People Live in nine hours of compelling instruction and exercises to help you learn how to identify the "frames" that organize your most basic experiences ... extend your awareness to every level of who you are ... and, ultimately, to discover who you are beyond your thoughts, emotions, memories, associations, and perceptions. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent set of tapes to get you to awareness
I have listened to the set of tapes several times.

I find Dr. Wolinsky easy to understand and find his method of going through the different dimensions (external, mind/thoughts, body, feelings/emotions) to be a uncomplicated way of understanding the different levels and getting to the I; the not I, I; the essence and the void.

I recommend it highly for those interested in pursuit of the self, essence.

5-0 out of 5 stars Pure Simplification of "The Way of the Human"
I have read all books of Dr. Wolinsky, "Waking from the Trance" is not an exeption of the seriousness of his writing. This is a book for anyone seeking a meaningful path in life without distortions and sweet tells, a guide for personal transformation that can literally change your life.
The purpose of this work is to summarize the development of multy-dimensional awarenes which can help you discover Who You Are. Dr. Wolisky is one of the few lucky people to encounter Nisargadatta Maharaj on his way to selfrealization, and this is the fruit of his pure teaching ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Tape!
I have owned this walking workout for several years and I love it. It's so much better than simply listening to the radio while walking, because the beat of the music keeps you on pace. It gradually gets more intense, so you have time to catch your breath. I keep hoping Kathy Smith will produce more tapes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent walking work-out companion!
Kathy Smith is great! I first began using her aerobic video, so when I became interested in walking for weight loss, I bought this tape along with her other "Walking for Weight Loss" The tapes are excellent for keeping me paced at a fat burning level, keeping me motivated. There are 4 workouts on this tape, (2) 30-min, (1) 40-min and (1) 60-minute, so depending on what kind of workout I want, it's all in one set! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book!
This is a wonderful book, and I highly recommend it for anyone who's dealing with any sort of physical challenge. I had an orthopedic condition that dominated my life for several years, and Siegel's book taught me valuable lessons in dealing with my condition.

The first lesson is the importance of the patients asserting themselves in the doctor-patient relationship - not in a negative sense, but more as establishing a partnership in fighting the condition. One disappointment of mine is that Siegel's teachings haven't had more of an impact on the medical community. In fact, with the onset of managed care, medicine has gone even further in the opposite direction, and patients have to work harder than ever to become a "partner" in their treatment.

The second lesson is the overiding importance of love for your health - both in increasing your chances of recovery and reducing the chances of getting sick to begin with. His message can easily be lost in today's analytical world of medicine, but it's crucial.

The message in this book really applies to everyone - regardless of their health.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, but can be hurtful to some readers
I loved this book when I first read it. The healing stories, the practical advice, the positive outlook all resonated with me. I used some of Dr. Siegel's ideas in my book The Art of Getting Well: Maximizing Health When You Have a Chronic Illness.

But I kept encountering people who felt Love, Medicine and Miracles had hurt them or their loved ones who were struggling with cancer. Dr. Siegel states that "happy people don't get sick," and makes other statements that imply that illness is mostly our fault. He has tremendous compassion for the sufferers, but says that they could get better if they got their attitude adjusted.

This healing from within may often be possible. But the physical and emotional conditions of people's lives can make such changes very difficult. And some diseases are so strong that all the change in the world may help, but will not cure.

So I was very careful in writing Art of Getting Well to make clear that health conditions are not our fault. But it is still our responsibility to do the best we can with them. And we can often do very well indeed, and Dr. Siegel's book can help us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most uplifting
Dr. Bernie is a godsend. It's been a few years since I read this, right after "Peace, Love and Healing" and felt more at peace with my diabetes than ever. His wisdom is spot on, but not always easy to follow, as many people with chronic or terminal illnesses are accustomed to living with a negative outlook.

This book will help you believe what most doctors won't tell you...that your illness needn't be the be all and end all, and you can feel confident and at peace.
Bless you, Bernie!

5-0 out of 5 stars Love, Medicine and Miracles
This book has changed my life! I am 43 years old with a wonderful husband of 18 years and three beautiful children, 14, 13 and 10. I was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. It was by chance that it was caught, but nonetheless it is breast cancer. I am currently receiving radiation and have four more weeks to go. During the first week, I was sick to my stomach, felt weak, tired, couldn't eat and was a mess until I read this book. My neighbors had to drive me to my treatments and I had to wear headphones during the treatments. After reading the book I am a new person and went into treatments driving myself and hopping on the table without headphones. They were thrilled with me and I told them that everyone must read this book. I have share it with everyone I can and my mother said she can't put the book down.
I am very religious and at first wondered why me since I speak with God everyday, now I know how to visualize and love life to the extreme and am so happy to be alive. I still have the meditation part to go, but that will come. I also feel as though God is trying to lead me on a differnt path that I am on and will find out in time what that is.
I must say this book is not just for people with illnesses, but for everyone. Thank you for changing my life!! I wish I could tell everyone in the world how wonderful this book is.

5-0 out of 5 stars I am living proof
I read this book a very long time ago and discovered that you can survive, but you need love in your life, someone who really and truly shows that they care. I had cancer at the time but luckily for me I also had a supporting husband who loved me very much.
I am not so lucky this time. Yes I have cancer again but I do not have love or support and must go it alone. I will not survive.
This is a terrific book and I recommend it to everyone, even if you do not have health problems. It is truly a learning experience about the powers of love. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, easy to do, and a noticable difference.
This is the first time I've ever been persuaded to alter my diet or to try such costly skin care products. Lack of persistence and consistency is a weakness of mine and the claims sound like implausible hyperbole, until you actually try it.

I breezed through the book the first night I bought it, bought two of his products soon thereafter (one product to firm around the eyes and another to firm the face), and didn't bother with the nutritional supplements (I thought the list was too long and there was no way I was going to figure out which ones were more helpful and the right amount of each to take, and when to take them throughout the day). Instead of rigorously following the diet, I just loosely tried to take his advice, drinking more water so I don't dry up and look like a prune, eating more fruit and veggies, eating more fish (especially salmon), and less red meat (though still stopping in McDonalds every now and then).

Two weeks later I was out with a fellow I had dated a few times and he said I looked particularly attractive that evening. I told him I had had my teeth whitened. He said, no, it's not that, it's my skin, something is beautiful and different about it, he didn't know what. Then I told him I had been trying something new and that it must work, though he was the first person to say anything. The following weekend, my mother told me I looked nice, contented - perhaps it was something else? Last week I took two days off from work and the first day a guy flirted with me in the bookstore and gave me his business card, then the next day I was hanging out in the park and a guy introduced himself to me and kept hanging around me 'til I made it clear I was going my own way, without him. That kind of attention in two days hadn't happened in a long time.

I'm not sure that I see a difference as quickly as 10 minutes, but I would lean toward saying yes, it works quickly. And even if it didn't, it's well worth reading the book and trying some of the recommendations.

P.S. Saw the author on public television tonight and he said which 4 supplements are more important to take, so I'll try those soon (vitamins C and E, DMAE, and alpha lipoic acid), though I won't take them on a schedule as he suggested, but will instead be more random, maybe I'll take them all before work.

5-0 out of 5 stars I saw this Doctor on Good Morning America!
I saw Dr. Perricone on Good Morning America. Several volunteers agreed to go on his "three day skin diet." They were instructed on which foods were best for healthy skin. They used no special products, just followed the food plan. In three days they returned to the show and their skin was AMAZING. Diminished lines, smoother texture, just younger looking in general. Diane Sawyer said he was a dermatologist from Yale University. With those credentials and the really stunning results I bought the book. I've been following the program and taking some of the nutritional supplements he suggests, and I love the difference in my skin. I highly recommend The Wrinkle Cure.

1-0 out of 5 stars If the author really wants to be convincing......
I bet many readers were excited to be told by a dermatology professor that by eating certain supplements and applying certain creams, plus a genearl good diet etc., they can actually reduce the sags and wrinkles on their skin--I'm no exception. But after visiting Dr. Perricone's web site to see the prices of the products, it made me think twice. I can afford them, but I will not buy them because I'm just not convinced of the worth. If Dr. Perricone really wants us to believe his theory and the effects of the treatments he claims, he should not make the products so ridiculously expensive, at least he can offer, say, 1-3 month of Low Cost Trials for each customer. In that case, if anyone has seen real positive effect during the trial, then she/he would be willing to spend more on the products at non-trial prices. Since the treatment must continue indefinitely, Dr. Perricone will still make $$$$$$$ that he wants, and he will have gained many loyal customers. Unfortunately this is not the case. The book may have presented a nice theory, but there is no testimony, only quotations he cited from God-knows-where. Given the psychology of the aging people, and the income of those who are most conscious of their appearances (such as television anchors, actresses--these people will probably not care if their money was wasted on something with no acclaimed effects), this is a smart business. Poor, ordinary people will have gone bankruptcy. Of course, the important issue is not money, but whether the effects are real: if real, then a poor woman will be gladly giving her hard-earned $$$ for even a few weeks of youthful-looking skin. So, my word to Dr. Perricone: show us some real thing by offering a trial price so we can enjoy the effects on ourselves, rather than hearing you quote some "patients" whose skin we will never see. If we see any improvement of our skin during the trial period, you bet we will come back to you without hesitation. Besides, I have learned that the actual cost of the products is far, far lower.

4-0 out of 5 stars Look for less expensive alternatives - at the drug store
I borrowed this book from the library (sorry Amazon). It was a fast read and by luck I had already tried one of the supplements he recommends; Alpha Lipoic Acid (I grabbed the wrong bottle when intending to purchase Acidolphilus). Periodically I would take some trying to use it up. I never made the connection between taking Alpha Lipoic Acid and better looking skin until I read the book. Once I put the two together I thought there may be something to what he said.

I started taking the Alpha Lipoic Acid supplements I already had and purchased vitamin C Esther and Coenzyme Q10. Since Perricone advocated using moisturizers that contained these vitamins I popped a coenzyme Q10 capsule and smoothed the contents over my face at night (it makes you look jaundiced). Later I purchased a cream containing these vitamins from the Vitamin Shoppe via Amazon (it cost $14) and I use it at night. During the day I use Nivea's Q10 Plus moisturizer with sunscreen.

Have I noticed a difference? A small one, yes. The wrinkles are less deep and less noticeable, though still there. My skin has a healthier appearance - brighter (my skin was looking dull and haggard for awhile). I will keep taking the supplements because I think they make a difference. However, I will purchase them from the drug store where they are affordable and I take one each a day.

(I've noticed that putting coenzyme Q10 on a cut makes it heal faster.)

2-0 out of 5 stars Nothing New Here
Mr. Perricone is obviously a very bright man...with a very advanced knowledge of dermatology and I respect his positions in the medical field.

Although he's likely a brilliant doctor...all of his skin care products lack the one (and only) thing that can actually assist in the war against wrinkles. It's puzzling that somebody with his background would set out to produce a line of skin care that discludes any kind of sunscreen...even an SPF 5 ....

I have 5 of his products....the alpha lipoic lip cream dried up so quick I had to throw it out...even though it was tightly sealed and in a dark place. His moisturizer is very average...and so is the 'eye area therapy'. What works very nicely is the 'face firming activator'....I bought it because my mother who is 70 had such wonderful results... No it didn't remove any wrinkles...(come on people...there is no such creme anywhere in the world) but her skin had a healthy glow and her skin tone looked very even. The Amine complex face lift is not too bad either...but again...these products DO NOT REMOVE WRINKLES. Obviously if such a product beauty conscious woman would ever wrinkle

So...the title of the book is somewhat misleading in that his diet recommendations and products can/are able to ...cure wrinkles. This just isn't so.

What is the most truthful and helpful aspect of this book is Mr. Perricone's references of the ZONE diet.

I did go on the Zone program for 1 yr..not to lose weight...purely to see if it would give me more energy and if I'd feel 100% better. The results were notably amazing...had the recipes not been so hard to put together ...I'd still be on it today.... My hat's off to you Dr. Sears for your Zone diet. I'm not a doctor...but my energy increased...I had a sense of well being...and if you accompany this way of eating by some'll likely improve your health overall..

The book is not going to help cure wrinkles. If that's what your're looking for...STAY OUT OF THE SUN...don't smoke and keep alcohol consumption to an absolute minimum. That's what any good dermatologist will tell you.

My mother-in law has stayed out of the sun almost her entire life and her 59 yr old face looks like she's 35. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "A Voice Many Seek but Few Ever Hear"
I first came across the works of Denis Waitley in late 1996, as I began my first steps towards entrepreneurship. It was via audio tape, which contained most if not all of the contents of this book, nonetheless, here was a complete stranger telling Me: I could succeed, I could achieve, I could do things - encouragement I was not getting from my immediate family, my peers, my "friends" at that time.

Someone once said: You will become like the information you input into your mind and the people you associate with. If that's the truth, then, I am indeed one step closer to where I wish to be in my life, and YOU can be there, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
I found this book an enjoyable read. Dr Waitley is a no nonsense self help guru. In this book he outlines the 10 qualities of a winner. Follow the steps and I am sure you will achieve tremendous success in your personal and professional life.

Zev Saftlas, Author of Motivation That Works: How to Get Motivated and Stay Motivated

5-0 out of 5 stars Great program by Dr. Waitley
Aside from the fact that Dr. Waitley has a doctorate in behavorial therapy, there is something special about Dr. Waitley, his writings and the way he speaks. He is much more than a motivational rah-rah guy and he is much more than just a behavorial therapist. Dr. Waitley seems to combine his scientific background with motivational and inspiritional concepts that really work. Listening to him in person is a delight. And his audio programs are outstanding. He mixes humor with education and comes across like he genuinely cares about you....becuase he does.

The Psychology of Winning will bring out that winner in you. A fantastic program that actually delivers on it's promises. And you can get the paperback for less than the price of a good meal.

Great stuff. Thank you Dr. Waitley. I am looking forward to your next foray.

5-0 out of 5 stars The 10 qualities of a total winner
Although there are many authors who promote personal development, few have the credentials that Dr. Denis Waitley has. And few, if any, disclose the the techniques o f the most highly successful people in the world, from top executives, Olympic athletes, POW's and scientists. Dr. Waitley shows us that total success is an ongoing process that is cultivated, nourished and shared.

Another unique quality about Denis Waitley is that he truly cares about you. He wants you to win at life and The Psychology of Winning will show you exactly how to win in life. Great book. One that needs to be read again and again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dramatically changed my life!
I first heard of Denis Waitley back in the mid 1980's when I happened by a single cassette tape of his based on this book. I immediately liked his style and his message and I went to work following Dr. Waitley's advice.

The Psychology of Winning is a great book. I still have that single audio tape along with the entire album which I purchased from Nightengale-Conant as well as other books and tapes by Dr. Waitley.

This book is highly recommended for all achievers or those who want to be. ... Read more

Book Description

Your life has a root core that, once understood, unlocks a powerful force to create the life the way you want. Key questions and an amazingly clear "map" are now at your fingertips so you can "Live by Design."

In this groundbreaking work, Dr. Phil challenges you to find your "authentic self" -- that person you have always wanted to be, but were too distracted, busy, or scared to become. Instead, you have created a "fictional self" -- taking on the identity of who you believe you are supposed be. The incongruence between these two selves is what leads you to feel that your life is incomplete, unbalanced, and more difficult than it should be.

In Self Matters, Dr. Phil helps you to demystify your self-concept, and learn how to reclaim your authentic self. You can learn to think beyond the excuses and fears that have masked the person you want to be. By facing the cards life has dealt you, you can relearn how to best react to them.

Self Matters is one of the most forward-thinking works on self-concept and self-esteem ever published. We get only one chance in this world. Dr. Phil shows all how to make the most of it.

  • What are the ten most defining moments of your life?
  • What are the seven most critical choices you have made to put you on your current path?

5-0 out of 5 stars I Love Me
With this book Dr. McGraw hits the nail on the head ... so to speak ... or does he put a mirror of truth in front of your face? Well, anyway, as usual McGraw is blunt and as direct as he can be and once again his advice is not for the faint of heart, because the reader may discover something very special or perhaps sensitive about himself/herself. This is McGraw's strategy and through all of this his advice is helpful and beneficial as he motivates to face the truth about one's self. Great book! Another book that has a more gentle approach, but is just as direct touching sensitive areas of one's life, and I highly recommend this book, is Dietmar Scherf's "I LOVE ME: Avoiding and Overcoming Depression."

As a counsellor and one who has studied behavioural psychology extensively, this will definitely be a book that will be highly recommended reading material. McGraw challenges the reader to take a look beyond one's mirror image and discover who the individual truly is inside. It is extremely thought provoking and readers will find themselves doing some deep soul searching to come up with honest answers. Sometimes finding one's true self is a painful experience, for many people are quite willing to identify their strengths but are less enthusiastic when it comes to identifying (and admitting) their weaknesses and imperfections.

The people who come through our lives and leave their mark, the choices we make and the critical events that happen in our lives, all determine to a certain degree, who we are and what we will become. Genetics also plays a part as well as our early childhood experiences. However, this book is really a book in understanding one's inner self. Of course, our life is created from the inside out! Those who fail to see the value of the book, are missing out on in important lesson in life: the basic psychology of "what makes us tick." McGraw has written a dramatically poignant, frank and intellectual book that enables the reader to "pull down the masks and walls," maximize their full potential, and live the life of the person they were intended to be. If one does not comprehend the purpose and significance of the book, they are sadly missing out on an insightful journey into self-discovery. "Self Matters" is a fantastic book; there are not enough stars for this one!

5-0 out of 5 stars Self Matters: A Professional Psychologist' perspective
As a professional therapist I must say that Dr. Phil McGraw's Self Matters is a powerful and life changing book that has answered a number of questions that have plagued me, and I'll bet millions of others. Dr. McGraw's handling of a complex subject is eloquently brilliant! So many others TRY to make the concept of "self" understandable but fall short, however well intended.

Choosing to avoid all of the New Age, "inner-self" type rhetoric Dr. McGraw treats the subject of who you have become and importantly how with a directness that is his trade mark. Leading you through the history of your life with a focus and a purpose he gives you the tools and focus to take even the most difficult past and turn it into personal power. Dr. McGraw chooses stories from his own life that are decidedly relateaable. Rather than using dramatic, headline news type sensationalism he shows us how each of us have events that are important to each of us, even if not to everyone else.

By leading us to examine both external and internal factors about ourselves, he leads us to deal with reality of life yet claim the power of self definition.

Concepts such as PERSONAL TRUTH, AUTHENTIC SELF, DEFINING MOMENTS, CRITICAL CHOICES, PIVOTAL PEOPLE AND INTERNAL DIALOGUE were life altering for me and will become part of therapuetic regimine as I treat my patient population.

I did not think it was possible but SELF MATTERS is even better than LIFE STRATEGIES AND RELATIONSHIP RESCUE. Well done and thank you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Lost And Found
Dr. Phil is very tough, but he helped me remember who I was when I was my 'Authentic Self'. For that alone, the book was worth reading. I highly recommend this book. Another book that helped me is Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life, by JoAnna Carey because it gave me a week-by-week action plan to get more out of life but the tasks were simple, fun and effective.

Book Description

On this two-CD set, acknowledged world leaders Dr. Wayne W. Dyer and Deepak Chopra, M.D. tell you how to manifest anything you desire, if you really, really, really, really want it!

Dr. Dyer, bestselling author of Manifest Your Destiny and many other books teaches you how to start getting your heart's desire by first, becoming a self-actualized person; second, being independent of other people's opinions; third, being detached from outcomes; and fourth, being free of any investment to have power or control over other people. Then-you must banish all doubt from your mind, and know that you can attract what you want into your life.

Through manifesting with the following four steps, Dr. Dyer teaches you how to reduce the time it takes from when you decide what you really, really, really, really want in your mind and when it shows up in physical form:

1. Wish-for what you want to create.
2. Desire-a willingness to ask for what you want, and then you shall receive it.
3. Will or intention- you must have a hardened will and intend that you will get what you want.
4. Passion-you must be passionate about what you want.

Dr. Dyer ends by saying, "What you think about expands, so think about what you want, not about what you don't want!" ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars disappointment
I have read several books by both Chopra and Dyer. This tape was humorous and somewhat interesting but " nothing new under the sun". Seemed a bit disjointed.
I could have spent the money on something with more depth from them. I felt as if this was just a quick tape made to sell because of their names.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction
I found this tape set to be a good introduction to both Wayne Dyer and Deepak Chopra. I'm much more familiar with Dyer than Deepak Chopra. Initially I was a little skeptical about Deepak but when he first starts talking his manner is so easygoing that I was quickly won over. He starts off one of his segments by telling a story where he jokingly admits he is a "Quack". Nice to see this honesty.

If there is one thing missing -- it is that the tapes are too short!

Definitely a must buy. You can listen to the message easily within an evening.

5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening, Fun, Intellectual, Exciting and Spiritual
Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer are inspirational! These great men have combined their thoughts and views about Spirituality and hidden knowledge, backed with decades of research, into a Healing, Informative presentation that will make you understand the quantum mechanics behind our thoughts, bodies and Soul. For those who have never delved into the mysteries, or those who think our lives are not magickal, this series is a revelation! These men are very well-educated and they believe in sharing the methods of Healing that they have discovered....mostly, relating to a person's mind-set and BELIEF in God, self and Healing Power. Doctors of the future may be in for a complete restructuring of their own beliefs, after this work gets-around for a few decades! Be on the ground floor of scientific revolution, check these guys out....and Listen to their ideas. You might just find yourself acquiring more Energy, wealth and Health. I usually would not ever recommend "self-help" tapes, because most of the stuff on the market is goofy or geared towards capitalism and propaganda. However, Deepak Chopra and Wayne Dyer are Genuine individuals, with a strong desire to raise the consciousness of humankind and explore the reality of our Inner Nature. The stories they tell, to help people relate to their ideas, are welcome words for the whole family. Children do not know they are incapable of great things, until they are Programmed to believe this untruth.... Personally, I have always been a "Scurvy Elephant," myself.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a phenomenal experience!
Even though I frequently consult's reviews about books, music and everything else, this is the first review I write and I write because I really want to share the incredible experience I had when listening to this audio tape! Belleruth Naparstek's words took me into a beautiful place on Earth and reconnected me with my beloved grandmother who passed away many years ago! It was so powerful that I cried for half an hour, and I felt such release after I was done! I want to thank you, Belleruth, for this amazing gift!

I have listened to an watched many meditation tapes and this is by far the best I have encountered because it reaches you on a very deep level. I can't wait to experience Belleruth's other tapes!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a real jewel
I bought this tape without knowing anything about it, and I feel like I stumbled onto a real treasure. I've listened to the guided meditation dozens of times, and it never fails to relax and nurture me. Unlike other self-confidence tapes that seek to "pump up" the listener, this tape guides you through imagery that is simple, gentle, and heart-warming. I'd listen to it even if I weren't a performer, but it has helped me many times to relax and focus before and during performances. I'm very grateful to have it.

that lightly about anything. I have had it for about two
weeks, and just the other day realized that I was sticking up
for myself in a difficult situation, and making my goals
happen in a much more focused way!

You cannot go wrong with this tape. I do plan to try out her

Book Description

Since joining the Yankees in 1996, Joe Torre has quickly reestablished the team as one of the great success stories in all of professional sports. But Torre has not only shown his outstanding managerial talents by leading the Yankees to two championships in three years. He's also survived the pressure-cooker of big-market media, established a calm, effective working relationship with George Steinbrenner, and cultivated clubhouse harmony on a team packed with distinct personalities. That harmony, together with Torre's emphasis on steadiness, optimism, serenity, mutual respect and responsibility, paved the way for his team's record-shattering 125-win season and 1998 World Series sweep.

In Joe Torre's Ground Rules for Winners, the Yankee manager reveals the twelve keys to his phenomenally successful management philosophy -- keys directly applicable to business and to life. Drawing from his years of experience in the corporate microcosm that is professional baseball. Torre shares his wisdom of the universal concerns of managers -- handling tough bosses, dealing with both setbacks and success, earning the trust and respect of your team players and bringing together a diverse group of individuals into a cohesive unit with a willingness to make the sacrifices necessary to win. Joe Torre's Ground Rules for Winners is a comprehensive guide to the management techniques that Torre has refined, illustrating his methods with vivid, colorful stories from his years in professional baseball.

Torre's invaluable insights will provide listeners with the tools they need to develop a winning outlook, and to get the most out of themselves and their colleagues, whether in sports, business, or life. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Not an average Joe
I've only heard audio portions of this book so far and I've enjoyed it immensely. I'm a huge Yankee fan and I love the way Joe manages them - and George Steinbrenner for that matter; calm, clear, focused, patient. However, I just wanted to respond to Bill from NY, who said that Joe Torre can not write andthat the book wasn't very "inciteful".
Note to Bill: buy a dictionary before you "right" off a review in haste.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Advice
This book offers good advice for managers of most professions. It may be simplistic to say that the baseball industry strategies will apply to all areas, but one of the first things you learn IS that it will apply to most areas -- because it deals with one long-time commonality -- people. Joe Torre shows that his insight and respect for others really does work and that it is NOT just money.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful examples that can be applied to many situations
SETBACKS, AND SUCCESS by Joe Torre with Henry
Dreher . . . Torre, in case you're not a baseball fan, is the manager
of the New York Yankees . . . this book tells how he has
applied commonsense principles to become perhaps the
sport's best top skipper . . . nothing overly profound here,
but it all did make sense to me . . . and I liked how he related
baseball examples to business, family and life situations.

There were several passages I particularly enjoyed; among them:
* In any business, workers up and down the hierarchy want nothing
more than to be treated fairly, to feel that they aren't getting
the short end of a manager's stick. My second baseman in 1966,
Mario Duncan, once was quoted as saying about me, "He doesn't
play favorites. All twenty-five guys are his favorites." It was kind of
him to say, and I believe that it's true. Managers who make it
their business to keep personal preferences to themselves, to
show regard for all employees, and to be scrupulously fair about
opportunities, promotions, and perks, will be rewarded with a
bunch of highly motivated team players.

* During my eight years as a player with the Braves, I was fortunate
to hit behind baseball's all-time home run king, Hank Aaron. One
day, Hank and I were talking about batting slumps when he made
a comment that's stayed with me ever since: "Each at bat is a
new day."

* "I hang pictures," is a phrase I've used whenever I start a new
job. . . . When I first managed the Mets in the late 1970s, Boyer,
then the Cardinals' manager, visited me in my clubhouse
office. Kenny noticed all the personal pictures I had hanging on
the walls. "Wow," he exclaimed. "You expect to be here for a

"When I start working somewhere, I just assume that I'm going
to be there forever," I said. "It's the only way I can do my job."

4-0 out of 5 stars Torre Uncovers Winning Attitude for Success
Coaches not only bring winning teams to victory, but they influence the team and individual to aspire to their highest potential. The art of coaching sculpts people into personal success with the clay of trust, encouragement, insight into individual psychology, and a thorough knowledge of the activity coached. Joe Torre, the manager of the New York Yankees baseball team who brought the players to championship at the World Series, weaves together these factors to show how business people can reach the same level of personal success. His wisdom applies to any activity that relies on an individual's extra push to succeed.
"How do you make it happen? As an individual, you work relentlessly on the fundamentals of the game-whatever you game may be," he notes in the book. The mechanics of the game or business lay the groundwork, but the variables of talent, interaction with coworkers, attitude and relationship skills count even more. "In order to build teamwork, you must acknowledge each individual's worth, letting him know that this role, no matter how seemingly minor, is a vital cog in the team's efforts," he writes.
In today's work environment, where getting to know fellow workers may be subordinate to getting the job done, and where the focus is on production rather than people, Torre's ground rules of knowing the people who work with and for you may seem radical. But, he says, they are essential.
His blend of common sense, experience and psychological insight make this book a productive and instructive use of time for managers or anyone wanting to succeed in business. He shows how the complexity of mind, emotion, heart and talent work together to build success, and he emphasizes the power of the mind and attitude on performance. The dreams and goals deep within the individual can win out, he insists. He encourages bravery and persistence to carry on in a world that can make it easy to douse the flame of a dream for the banality of safe routine. In the end, success in business and in life have meaning to the individual because of the struggle to get there. "(O)nly you know how many small triumphs and snarls went into that big victory, how many months, years, or decades of sweat and sorrow preceded that breakthrough. That's baseball, and that's life," he notes.
And that's Torre's attitude in a book worth reading.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Read!
Joe Torre distills his management and "team player" philosophy into twelve keys. These insights elegantly deal with ways to inspire critical qualities, including trust, commitment, optimism, resilience, excellence, patience, integrity, respect, leadership, teamwork, and camaraderie. Torre illustrates his beliefs and advice with pertinent anecdotes told in a detailed, witty, heartfelt style. Torre, who has won four world series titles as manager of the New York Yankees, draws on his experiences as a player, manager, and leader. He includes the lessons he learned when he reported to a demanding team owner. The book delivers what it promises and offers an engaging behind-the-scenes look at professional baseball. We [...] recommend this book to executives, managers and employees at all levels in any kind of business. Since it never relies on macho clichés, both men and women will find it satisfying and worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars Eat Right For Your Type
Since the longest most thorough reviews printed here are negative, I have much to say regarding this Blood Type theory. It has changed my life. Altough there are many times I do not strictly adhere to the diet, I stick to it at other times because it is the ONLY sure bet I have found to feeling WELL. Initially it is very difficult to break patterns of eating developed throughout a lifetime. However, I spent my life wondering why I didn't feel good after eating pasta/bread or why my stomach hurt after drinking orange juice or why I had a terrible taste in my mouth after eating sugar. If you are looking to this diet to solve your negative attitude or obesity, obviously you may need further help. However if you just wish to live at your optimum and maintain a healthy weight, this book is platinum!

5-0 out of 5 stars Change Your Life; Find Out Your Blood Type!
My cousin referred me to Dr. D'Adamo's first book, Eat Right for Your Type. Live Right for Your Type is even better. The diets really work! Who would ever want to go on another ridiculous diet, after learning to follow the tips in this book? You just lose weight naturally by following the guidelines & avoiding the items listed as "avoid." Anytime I think I can eat anything I want, I start gaining weight. However, eating right, in this case, doesn't mean eating less. It just means avoiding foods that don't work well for your blood type. Don't miss it!!

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent book
I bought this book because I'd read about the blood type diet elsewhere, and was curious. THis is an excellent book, and I've followed D'Adamo's advice for over two years now. He not only tells you which foods you should and shouldn't eat, this book also relates different diseases to blood type. When my son started having ear infections I suspected that he had A or AB blood type, and sure enough, he's AB. My daughters who are type B's, have never had an ear infection.
This is not a weightloss program book but a lifestyle book that will change your life forever if you follow the guidelines. It's not hard. I'm type B, so I'm not supposed to eat chicken, tomatoes, wheat, or corn( there are a lot more but these are the more popular items). I don't crave for them and it's very easy to avoid these food items.
You must read the history on blood types to understand the concept of blood type diet.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is not a diet, it's a liberating way of life.
Knowing your blood type, and beyond that whether you are a secretor or non-secretor (both tests can be ordered from the book) gives you the valuable information to begin a whole new way of eating and a whole new energy level. This is the book I've been looking for my entire life! I've been following LIVE RIGHT FOR YOUR TYPE's guidelines for a few years and have never felt better. I also use Dr. D'Adamo's blood-type-specific vitamins, minerals and herbal preparations. This way of eating makes such logical sense to me that I'm amazed that it hasn't become a way of life for the multitudes! If I could have given it 10 stars, I would have, because that's how much it's changed my life for the better!

1-0 out of 5 stars Based on Pseudoscience
Here is yet, another book from a bestselling author who claims that blood type determines what our diet, exercize and lifestyles should be like. After talking to a friend, who has been a pathologist in a blood bank for many years at a leading university medical center, and who has also read all of Eat Right and Live Right books; I can honestly say the books are based on faulty premises. The associations with blood type and disease are not new and at best weak according to most scientific studies, yet more recent studies in the 1987 Amercican Journal of Hematology, shows that blood type AB and B persons have higher levels of Factor VIII and von Willebrands factor, not blood type A as the author has misrepresented in his book. This is the basis, for the author's assumption, that A and AB blood groups having poorer outcomes with cancer and heart disease than the other blood groups. This assumption by the author has not been proven either clinically or scientifically. This is only but a few of the misrepresentations made by the author. Most of the authors suggestions are pretty much common sense, avoid processed food and you're likely to see improvements in your health. Avoidance of allergen producing foods on one's avoid list will do the same. Weight loss will likely occur if your blood type diet is suited to your metabolism. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars NOW is WOW!
Such a simple message, yet so profound and full of wisdom! I did not read Eckhart Tolle's first book on this subject because at the time of purchase, I preferred the Reader's Digest version of his message. I got it! It's written in a way that makes sense and is very satisfying.

This is what I learned: When faced with the illusion of a problem, you have the ability to chase that problem away by living in the Now. In other words, if you mentally take an issue out of the "problem" category, you will in essence take the problem's power away -- it is no longer a problem. This way of thinking, thinking in the NOW, has eleviated stress in my life. I can now look at my life with appreciation, moment by moment. It takes practice. When you do this, you are making a choice to seek positive solutions rather than hone in on that which is negative or out of your control.

In reading this little book of wisdom, I've found that the secret of life is your perception. Living in the Now, truly living in the now, is uplifting, satisfying, and the most powerful place to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Which one to buy?
Since the content of Tolle's books has been covered well elsewhere, I'd like to address the person new to Tolle and wondering where to begin.

In my personal experience, if I could only afford to purchase one book, I'd start with PRACTICING THE POWER OF NOW. I feel that it essentially restates the material found in the original POWER OF NOW but in a format I found easier to digest. I don't see much point in owning both books (which I currently do.)

If you connect with PRACTICING and want more, then I'd recommend the audio book/retreat Realizing the Power of Now: An In-Depth Retreat With Eckhart Tolle. (It's less than $10 if you purchase the audio file from Audible.) I'm only half way through listening yet I constantly find myself thinking " I understand what he meant." It truly is an excellent supplement.

There is one more Tolle book here, STILLNESS SPEAKS. I borrowed this from the library. It's basically just out-takes from the other books, sort of a quotable quotes book that restates things in a nutshell. It would make a nice gift to a Tolle fan, but again, doesn't offer anything more than the other books. I suppose my message is: everything you need to know is in the original POWER OF NOW, stated perhaps more clearly in PRACTICING and excerpted in STILLNESS but supported well in audio format by the retreat CD.

I find Tolle's basic message very powerful, enlightening and simple. As he himself constantly repeats, he's not saying anything here now. But he explains it in a way which finally connects the dots for me. Unfortunately, this simple message seems to be getting constantly repackaged and I hope it doesn't turn into a "Chicken Soup for the Enlightened Soul" series. (I should probably go make sure that's not the title of an actual book! )

5-0 out of 5 stars A fantastic contribution to humanity
I have studied many spiritual paths for over 30 years, and the wisdom Eckhart Tolle provides in Practicing the Power of Now is truly enlightening. I learned much from this book, and it is one of the few that I highly recommend. I learned much from the wisdom provided, and once applied, I felt a genuine release of the negativity that I used to feel. This is another rare contribution that I HIGHLY recommend, which is why I give it the five stars it deserves.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another way to think about repetition...
I see that some readers are concerned about repetition in the various publications and question whether economic motives are the driving force. I do not know Mr. Tolle and withhold judgment. However, through many years of experiential reading I recognize when books consist of far more than words. The wisdom of the author's higher consciousness is being directed through the printed media. It's there for the taking by all who will slow down and allow it in. Many will recognize that following an evolving workshop teacher over time allows the student to partake of the increasing wisdom carried and shared by the teacher. Although the logical premise in a series of writings may remain the same, later compositions might convey increasingly higher "energy hits". Looking at the "value added" component might be a consideration when deciding what to purchase. As with everything else, individuals should use their own discretion to get a feeling sense of what might be good for them. The rich energy behind the words in this volume sent me to deep places within myself. I suggest being fully present with each sentence, one at a time, in order to get the most out of the reading experience.

1-0 out of 5 stars Hippy-Dippy wisdom
"When you claim well documented prior spiritual thoughts to be your own it only diminishes your credibility. I wish Tolle provided appropriate references - such as the Upanishads, the Gita, the Kashmir Shaivism, the Dhammapada and the Vigyana Bhairava Tantra. Enlightenment means complete dissolution of the ego -not the refinement of it -- so when I see Tolle trying to pass this stuff as his own - it just takes away of his claim of being enlightened. Tolle regurgitates in verbally articulate manner spiritual gossip or as another reviewer put it a rather funny manner superficial "Hippy-Dippy wisdom". "

Ultimately there are many religions but spirituality is only one and the essence of it is documented in the Upanishads. ... Read more

Book Description

Weary travelers. You've seen them-everything they own crammed into their luggage. Staggering through terminals and hotel lobbies with overstuffed suitcases, trunks, duffels, and backpacks. Backs ache. Feet burn. Eyelids droop. We've all seen people like that. At times, we are people like that-if not with our physical luggage, then at least with our spiritual load. We all lug loads we were never intended to carry. Fear. Worry. Discontent. No wonder we get so weary. We're worn out from carrying that excess baggage. Wouldn't it be nice to lose some of those bags? That's the invitation of Max Lucado. With the Twenty-third Psalm as our guide, let's release some of the burdens we were never intended to bear.

5-0 out of 5 stars Walking Baggage Free
If you want to go to the next level in your Christian walk, Traveling Light is a must read. Max Lucado, incidently my favorite author, has beautifully illustrated through the 23rd Psalm how to rid ourselves of the baggage that weighs down our spiritual lives. Simply written, with easy-to-understand analogies, he gently guides us into truthful examination of ourselves and easy steps to rid ourselves of each piece of luggage. My favorite characteristic of Lucado's books is they are based on Scripture. Also, with the study guide at the back, they are an excellent tool for bible studies/discipleship groups. This book in particular would be excellent for a discipleship group. I guarantee that once you read Traveling Light, you will never ever look at the 23 Psalm the same again. Truly the Lord is our Shepherd and we are His sheep.

5-0 out of 5 stars You can't believe how blessed I was
This is the first Max Lucado book (well, book) I've ever read and no words in my venacular can praise his work enough. It has so inspired and blessed me!

Traveling Light is based on the old (and one of the most famous Psalms) Psalm (23) by David the King. Lucado guides the reader with such tenderness, light-heartedness (and I mean it... You won't believe how quirky and witty he can get *Grin*) and insight into the very heart of the Psalm and God, eventually.

I enjoy thoroughly the way Lucado writes about his personal encounters as well as draws experience from others (from his wife to Moses) to illustrate each topical aspect of the Psalm. And it really helps you to see the big picture about vital life lessons such as pride, want and fear.

Apart from that, each topic is supported by reading references and questions that challenge you to probe further until you get a satisfactory answer for yourself! His intuition to human needs is amazing: Lucado is able to ask questions which I have long wanted to ask, and gives answers in his writing.

It's a brilliant book. What more can you ask for if a Psalm barely filling up a third of a page in a typical Bible is turned into sort of a guidebook comprising 220 pages? Truly, God must be in this writing. And if Max ever gets to read this book review, I'd like to thank him... For his modest sharing :o)

4-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyed it very much
I enjoyed this book immensely. I will say it's not for everyone. The Book's message did hit me just right though, so it was good for me. Max has a very easy style and I've not found anything, so far, in his books that contradict what I have learned and read in my Biblical studies. What I find great about Max's books is the cross-over potential. If you are not a Christian, but looking for some guidelines or help, Max's books are just as insightful as other "self-help" books out there. Readers can take the anecdotes giving by Max and understand the core message.

Not for everyone, but if your head is heavy and you shoulders are drooping... Give this book a shot.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful study on 23rd Psalm
Beautifully written, with humor and wonderful word pictures, the material in this book reached deep within to give me a better understanding of this well-known Psalm. I laughed, I cried, I thanked Max Lucado, and I thanked God for showing me the truth about the burdens I bear--and am not intended to bear! I can't wait to do the study at the end with my small group.

5-0 out of 5 stars a closer look at Psalm 23
Psalm 23 is probably one of the most familiar Bible passages, right up there with John 3:16. "The Lord is my shepherd..." Perhaps it is too familiar. Have we become so accustomed to hearing it that we have forgotten the wonderful promise it contains?

Traveling Light is a verse-by-verse exploration of Psalm 23, brought to life by comparing us to travelers weighed down with excess spiritual baggage. Each chapter identifies a different burden that we may be carrying in our life: flawed views of God, self-reliance, discontent, weariness, worry, hopelessness, guilt, arrogance, facing death, grief, fear, loneliness, shame, disappointment, envy, doubt and the longing for heaven.

This walk through the 23rd Psalm reminds and encourages us to take God at His word and release those burdens to Him. As usual, Lucado supports his material with plenty of scripture, sharp analogies and just the right amount of humor. For added impact, be sure to work through the study guide at the end of the book. Then get ready to lose some luggage.

The spirited child--often called "difficult" or "strong-willed"--
can easily overwhelm parents, leaving them feeling frustrated and inadequate. Spirited kids are, in fact, simply "more"--by temperament, they are more intense, sensitive, perceptive, persistent, and uncomfortable with change than the average child. Raising Your Spirited Child will help you:

  • Understand your child's--and your own--temperamental traits
  • Plan for success with a simple four-step program
  • Discover the power of positive--rather than negative--labels
  • Cope with tantrums and blowups when they do occur
  • Develop strategies for handling mealtimes, bedtimes, holidays, school and many other situations

5-0 out of 5 stars This can change your life if you have a spirited child!
This audiocassette has given me hope as a parent. If you have a spirited child (often called a difficult child in other books), you know that the average parenting classes, books, and advice from well-meaning friends and relatives just don't work. The author acknowledges our feelings of anger, frustration, fear, shame and embarrassment when we feel so inadequate as parents of spirited children. Then she gives clear, concise approaches and techniques that work with this type of child--along with the sage advice that "progress, not perfection is the goal." While all parents can benefit from the author's suggestions, those of us who live with the intensity of a spirited child will find the book a lifesaver. After a couple of years of frustration and despair, my husband and I (who listened to the tapes together) have found hope and excitement again about parenting our very spirited 5 year old.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book for loving parents at wits end.
If you need a new way of looking at your "problem child" Try seeing him as uniquely "spirited." Great insight into yourself, your problem solving skills, and the example you are passing on.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent for understanding spirited/strong-willed child
If your child is tedious, stubborn, persistent, full of chatter and ideas, and seems years beyond her actual age, then this book is for you! It is an excellent resource for understanding how to interact and bring out the best in your spirited child. It's a guide to treating your child like an intelligent person rather than crushing their spirit as some other parenting/"strong-willed" child books subtly imply. I also recommend Dr. Gary Chapman's "The Five Love Languages of Children".

5-0 out of 5 stars Does your child seem intense, yet easily overloaded...
This book is an absolute must for those of us with children who seem "not like other children." I thought I was crazy - going to friend's homes having the only kid who didn't want to play, but wanted to "sit and talk with the mommies." She was literally glued to me for the first 4 years of her life. Does your child seem too intense, too mature, and too alert for his or her age? You are not crazy, you just have an "active alert." This book helped me appreciate the zone that my little girl operates in, and I refer to it often when I feel overloaded.

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not alone! Finally, someone who understands!
If you have a "spirited" child, this book is a MUST! It not only affirms that you're not crazy, it helps you to understand and deal with your child! DEFINITELY worth the money! ... Read more
