If there's anyone qualified to write a self-help book on success, it's Jack Canfield, who's worked his way from scraping by as a teacher to holding a Guinness world record for having seven books simultaneously on The New York Times® Best Sellers list.

As a coauthor of the Chicken Soup for the Soul® series, he's sold more than 80 million books, and now lives "in a beautiful California estate" with his days of dining on spaghetti and tomato paste long behind him. "All you have to do is decide what it is you want, believe you deserve it, and practice the principles in this book," he says, and success is yours.

His advice is straightforward (examples: "reject rejection" and "surround yourself with successful people"), but rather derivative, with quotes from the likes of JFK, Colin Powell, Aldous Huxley, and fellow motivation author Napoleon Hill.Canfield's definition of success is primarily monetary, and he includes plenty of anecdotes depicting average folks who saved themselves from the brink of bankruptcy after following his principles. He could tone down the braggadocio; readers don't need to know that he's stayed in resorts in Hawaii, Italy, Australia, and Morocco. Despite those gripes, his cheerleader-caliber enthusiasm should benefit anyone looking to improve their lot in life. --Erica Jorgensen Exclusive Content

Jack Canfield, creator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul series, reveals secrets to success with 64 timeless principles in The Success Principles. 5-0 out of 5 stars Words of Wisdom
Jack Canfield's woven words of wisdom found within The Success Principles were principles he first experienced, lived, integrated and then mastered.Because of his determination and commitment to success, we too can master these principles that will empower us to take our goals and dreams to the next level. He inspires us to come out of the shade, off the couch, out of the backseat of our lives and become all that we were meant to be!Donna Loesch, President of Soulworks

5-0 out of 5 stars Start on a New Path
It's almost impossible not to like this book-- it's direct, pulls no punches, and is all about taking control of your life.Even if you get one gem of an idea every 30 pages, you're still going to come out ahead. If everyone read the first 2-3 chapters about taking responsibilty and quitting the blame-game, we as a society in general would vastly improve!

As Mart Spitzsaid, "Everyone wants to win an Olympic gold medal, but how many people want to train every day?"-- this book is going to teach you HOW to train, but you still have to do the work.I look at Jack Canfield and think-- when I'm as successful as he is, maybe then I can dismiss the principles. Until then, why not give it a shot?

My copy is a library book, but is certainly worth buying-- I'd even pay full cover price!

(This book is much much MUCH better than The 8th Habit: From Effectiveness to Greatness by Stephen Covey.)

5-0 out of 5 stars How to turn your dreams into reality
Simply amazing! Why? Because Jack will gently take you by the hand with his simple but very powerful techniques that can change your life.

This excellent book is about 64 easy to understand principles, that get fast results and that are easy to learn. It's packed with personal experiences, real stories and powerful quotations to empower and inspire you to live your destiny.

Jack will help you clarify your mission, set powerful goals, increase your self-esteem and self-confidence, get out of your comfort zone, commit to excellence and change your limiting beliefs. He will give you instructions to reach your mission and your goals: act as if, hire a coach, how to create your dream team and other practical and down-to-earth advice to unleash the power within you.

These principles are universal. They worked not only for him but for thousands and thousands of people throughout the world. They will work for you as well.

If you liked "The 7 Habits" and Stephen's great principles, you will love "The Success Principles" from Jack Canfield. He knows what he's talking about. He will teach you how to get from where you are to where you want to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best of Zig Ziglar
Zig's popularity didn't really explode until this book was released for the first time in 1993. And most authors choose to refer this book, out of all other ones Zig has written for others to read. Instead of focusing on just pure motivation, Zig teaches the art of living a happy, well-balanced life. The books starts off by raising you out of the trench of depression, then by giving you hope, arming you with a positive attitude and then instructing you with the best goal setting program I have ever read. Some parts of the book in opinion were quite dull and could use more follow up information,
but just the a good orchestra the final product was beautifully composed. If you're looking for a fun, humorous and simple book, I strongly suggest you take a look at Zig's Success for Dummies first, before buying this one. If you have one you do not need the other. The reason I like SFD better is because it combines his books See you at the Top and this one together.

5-0 out of 5 stars excelent book, more than a must read, it is a must do
This book is based on biblical teachings, therefor the infomation that it contains will change your life forever. If you apply yourself and respond to what Zig Ziglar says, your life will change. How do I know that the information in this book works, well I am seeing the proof in my own life. This book will help you to apply GOD's teachings to your everyday life. This book is easy to understand and is very streight forward. I encourage everyone to not only read this book, but to apply these biblical teachings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Right on Target Advice!
"In my own life I always pray for guidance as I choose my goals," writes Ziglar. In the margin I dated it and wrote "I do too." This book contains so much rich, practical, doable wisdom, not wonder it's a classic for achievers. Persistence leads to desired results. He quotes Robert Collier in making the point when he noted, "Success is the sum of small efforts--repeated day in and day out."

Ziglar talks about seeing one's self in the mind's eye as a prelude to accomplishment. "I dreamed overy forty years ago that I would be traveling the world, making speeches to every conceivalbe kind of group. I literally saw myself in front of vast audiences making those talks," he tells us.

On feeding success mentally, he reminds us of the necessity to surround ourselves with people who are going to edify us. He adds, "read good books." This is one such good book. Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars A message for Andrew Diamond
Dear "Jesus save me from Zig",

Why should the other reviewers have to disclose their faith? That is absolutely ridiculous!!! Christians have the same rights to free speech that other religious groups so freely enjoy without having to put up with that kind of discrimination. If you directed that sort talk to any other group than Christians your review would be considered discriminatory towards the group and potentially racist if the group was predominately of one ethnic background such as muslims or jewish people and in fact it probably wouldn't even get posted. Who do you think you are saying these people have to disclose their religious beliefs? They don't!!! And by the way, it's not as if they are trying to hide it. You make it sound like a right wing conspiracy. Why do you even care? It's obvious this book is written for people who can appreciate motivational speaking and the benefits of a positive mental attitude from a person as successful as Zig Ziglar. I bet your life is just teaming with accomplishments... This book is for people who have the ability to respect other people and their beliefs. I can't even believe that your review got posted!

People like you want free speech as long as it's not from a Christian or conservative point of view. People like you want no discrimination but you discriminate against Christians. People like you want to save whales, spotted owls and bambi but reserve the right to kill an unborn child if it's not convenient to have a child at that point in their life. Do you even realize what a double standard you have? You and your kind want free speech but don't want to hear about anything that goes against your liberal way of life.

1-0 out of 5 stars Jesus save me from Zig!
I bought this expecting motivational insights a la Earl Nightingale, but instead I get a sermon I could hear in any fundamentalist church. I think the other reviewers should have to state their religious beliefs as part of the review process. I bet all the 5 star reviewers are Born Agains. ... Read more

Book Description

The eight cassette in a series of lectures based on A COURSE IN MIRACLES, Marianne Williamson here discusses money and all its ramifications. In her lectures The Meaning of Money and Money Spiritualized, Marianne encourages us to change our thoughts about money, where it comes from and how it's used.

Poverty, or lack of anything, comes from a belief that we are less than what god made us. god's abundance is available to each of us, and by believing this we can change our attitudes toward money, our work in this world and ourselves.

Money is energy and energy is infinite in the universe. by doing what we love to do-and working for love and not for money- we will benefit in many ways, including monetarily. the key is to see money as a neutral entity, neither good nor bad, and find work we love to express God's goodness through our gifts. The money we receive from work can also be used to heal the world through the continuous flow it provides from ourselves to others and back again.

Marianne Williamson continues, to expand the growing international audience for her profound yet down-to-earth interpretations of A COURSE IN MIRACLES, the revolutionary self-study program of spiritual psychotherapy.

Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest. Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing. Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly. Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being. ... Book Description

Deborah Tannen's #1 bestseller revolutionized the way men and women talk -- and listen -- to each other -- at home, at work, and wherever the communication gap between the sexes can lead to troublesome misunderstandings. The problem dates back to childhood, when boys and girls learn to use language in distinctly different ways; years later, their adult efforts to talk often place them at cross purposes -- even when both are sincerely trying to communicate.

Dr. Tannen illustrates how the best intentions can go painfully awry between spouses, family members, co-workers and friends, With You Just Don't Understand, you'll recognize yourself and your own efforts to be understood -- and gain valuable insight to help you communicate better than ever before. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Enlightening and Powerful Communication Tool
I read this book many years ago, and have since given it as a gift many times over. Ms. Tannen gives us a clear picture of WHY men and women's communication styles are so different through studies and examples that are easy to read and understand. This book has given me information that has proven invaluable over time in my relationships with both men and women. I have given this book as a wedding gift and have been profusely thanked by both husband and wife. I have also given it to a few teens who are just beginning to get into the world of male/female communication (or lack thereof). It has been well accepted and appreciated. My own experiences have been less frustrating based on a better understanding of where we are going (communicatively) and why. Thank you Deborah Tannen for a wonderful gift of insight!

4-0 out of 5 stars Think Before You Speak
Wow! This book is an eye opener not only for communication at work but in personal relationships as well. A worthwhile read for any man who has wondered just what he said wrong and for any woman who finds herself puzzled by the men who just don't "get it." Take the lessons to heart and your life will be running more smoothly in no time. Also check out Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maze of Life by JoAnna Carey to help you communicate what you want in return for running the rat race.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading for Everyone!!!!!
Deborah Tannen has earned the Honor of having "You Just Don't Understand: Women and Men in Conversation" placed along side the ONLY other book that I currently own. The other book is "The Elements of Style"; by Strunk & White. Don't get me wrong; I read incessantly, but rarely keep any of the books that I purchase or borrow. I believe the two (2) books referenced above should be required reading for every American. Period! I won't pretend to know what age would be approriate or most effective for Ms. Tannen's book, but it certainly would go a long way in solving many of today's communication problems between ALL people. I primarily base my opinion of this book on: 1)my having read it, and 2)my having learned the hard way what this book lays out for you in plain English. I managed a team of 12 Finance professionals in NYC for 10+ years; consisting of men & woman of various ages, nationalities, and religions. In time, I learned how to effectively manage such a diverse group by gaining an undrstanding of how each person interelated with everyone else. I HIGHLY recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars You Just Don't Understand
After reading this book I realized how it relates to my daily life and conversations. I agree with what Tannen says, females talk with their friends more intimately than males do. Female friends talk to each other about how they feel while males talk about topics such as sports and don't say as much. When male and female friends talk together there are many differences. Tannen makes very good points about why people act the way that they do. It was interesting to learn some of the reasons that people speak and listen the way that they do. I now know why men and women often misunderstand each other. Even though I am a teenager I still feel that I can relate to this book and what it discusses.

2-0 out of 5 stars Made me think, but missed the mark.
The main thing that I give the book credit for is that it made me think about things that I do as a man and try to come up with my own explanations for my behavior, since hers clearly didn't resonate with me. I like to think of myself as "not a typical guy"; most of my women friends would agree. Yet I did recognize my own behavior in some of Tannen's examples. However, when she went on to explain why men do these things, it made me ponder my childhood relationships with other boys and, well, it wasn't anything like what she said. To be sure, there are boys/men who see the world in the binary one-up/one-down way that she describes. We've all met "super-alpha" men like this: the proverbial high-pressure salesman... the man who, upon entering a room where people are conversing, instantly creates a crowd. This isn't the way most boys/men are; some, certainly, but not most.

Also, the assumption that men are universally combative is incorrect. I think a more accurate picture of most boys growing up is that we find ourselves unwillingly placed into competition by bullies/super-alpha boys. I found myself picked on or challenged constantly in my childhood, when, all I really wanted was just to get along with everybody and not have people hassle me. I think most guys would nod their heads with me on this one. This, for me, is a much better explanation why men see people as challenging them where women do not, as men are hypersensitive to such challenges... and if you failed to rise to the challenge, you were humiliated by the bully's gang in front of your peers.

Boys too wanted to be accepted by their peers, and thrived on community. This explains the popularity of team sports among men. Some of the best memories of our childhood were our bonding with our teams for the unified purpose of winning a game.

Another point completely missing in her theory was the fact that, from a very early age, boys are "taught" not to show vulnerable feelings. Doesn't matter how enlightened your parents were. Unless you grew up in a vacuum, your peers would be sure to teach you that. This would explain why men relate to each other without actually ever talking about themselves or their deep feelings, but rather like to keep topics to common interests (most of the time).

Likewise, in male-female relationships, women are just as likely to be controlling as men. Women take different approaches to control, as brute force doesn't usually work for them. The idea that every woman just tries to get along flies in the face of the facts in some of my less successful relationships; I tend to be conflict-averse (a trait she attributes universally to women). I have infuriated some past partners who found "verbal sparring" a meaningful form of engagement (a trait Tannen attributes universally to men).

Anyway, she came up with some interesting observations that, I think, are universal to most men from super-alpha to enlightened/sensitive men, then used an "all men aspire to be super-alpha males" approach to try to explain them; and the converse seems to be true of her approach to explaining female behavior as well. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars He Really Understands!
This book was one of the few I have bought and actually read cover to cover (versus browsing or skimming) on the subject of clutter. Mike knows first hand what is like to be a clutterer, and how to get to the root of 'why' we do it. He has some practical suggestions, good references for further help, and most importantly a 'lifeline' to throw to fellow clutterers that have struggled for years to get clutter under control. Thank you Mike, I was impressed enough to start a group in my area for mutual support. No one understands a clutterer, like someone that has been there!

2-0 out of 5 stars Where's the beef?
I read this book, and there just wasn't enough practical information in it. There were too many stories about other folks, and not enough practical information about clearing up clutter. If you need a spiritual boost and want to read about others battling clutter than this book is OK. NOT OK if you're wanting some info on methods of clearing up your stuff.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good reminders, fresh insights
Mike Nelson does an effective job of giving "recovering clutterers" some practical information and (perhaps as important) motivation to get victory over the problems of a cluttered environment. The chapter on computer de-cluttering is showing it's age. (...)

2-0 out of 5 stars More "motivation" than "organization system"
My title says it all. There isn't much of a blue print laid out here for you to follow on the path to organizing your life. For the most part, this book seems to beat around the bush by presenting you with a series of actual accounts of clutterers and discussion on why you hoard things and how much better your life would be if you didn't. The author frequently sites his own experience as a reformed pack rat. After reading this book, I felt more pumped up to take action than instructed on how to go about better organizing the different facets of my life. True, motivation is half the battle, but I would have preferred more guidance with the other half.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wealth of cogently practical, easily applicable advice
Skillfully narrated by David Elias, Stop Clutter From Stealing Your Life by Mike Nelson offers the listener with a wealth of cogently practical, easily applicable advice on avoiding and preempting the self-esteem damaging, relationship impairing, financially draining, job imperiling consequences of an excessively cluttered personal environment and lifestyle. Stop Clutter From Stealing Your Life provides "tips, tricks & techniques" for decluttering life both short term and long term. If you have more "stuff" piling up around you at home and at work, then give a very careful listen to Mike Nelson's Stop Clutter From Stealing Your Life! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A classic book on creating your life as you desire it to be
Shakti Gawain's classic work, CREATIVE VISUALIZATION, truly stands the test of time. Although I read it for the first time in April 2001 (the original 1978 first edition version), I was thoroughly impressed with the way Gawain can write such a practical guide to the process of how we create our lives from our thoughts and feelings.

Gawain includes many exercises which help readers learn how to relax, how to visualize, contact their higher selves, program prosperity, heal themselves and others, meditate, and state meaningful affirmations. I especially enjoyed her "pink bubble" manifestation meditation for bringing what you most desire to you.

I feel very at home with the exercises and techniques outlined in CREATIVE VISUALIZATION, and highly recommend it to anyone interested in transforming their life for the better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get a life...the one you really want
I first read this book in 1990. It changed my life. Since then, I've given it to at least ten other people along with the workbook. Although I still have my raggedy, dog eared, coffee stained, back cover missing, first copy, I've purchased back up copies for myself. I have re-read some sections many times.

I stumbled upon my treasure map and workbook in the basement several years after the first reading. To my amazement, I had accomplished the majority of the goals I'd set. Most of the ones I had not met had lost their appeal by then, or were no longer relevant.

Since practicing Shakti's visualization methods for the last 12 years, I increased my salary three-fold, well into six figures in the last nine years, we're practically debt-free, I've lost weight, and my relationship with my husband has completely and positively altered.

I was laid off in a downsizing recently, and you know what, based on what I know to be true, "This or something better for the higher good of all" is in store for me. I see it as an opportunity for more growth!

This book is not rocket science. Its simplicity is beautiful, but like most transformational work, it only works if you work it

Rock on Shakti!!

5-0 out of 5 stars You CAN make the connection!
Thats what this book should have been titled! I disagree. It's not just the same as make the connection. I found Make the connection just plain ole' diet info. Great info, but nothing new. This book's section on motivation was astounding! What an eye opener for someone who has struggled with the mental part of making the decision to finally change my life. This book is definately something to pick up for anyone who has had it with diets. There's so much more to it! Life changing!

5-0 out of 5 stars a perfect completion to "Make the connection"
It is true that the steps towards weight loss are no different than in "Make the connection". But I think this book complements the first one perfectly. For the chapters on motivation alone, this book is worth buying. It explains the motivation issues of certain typres of people and why it can be damaging to your self-esteem to attempt dieting when you are not ready in your mind. This book also helped me to stay motivated whenever I had a low, and to keep going. I haven't regretted for one second that I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I disagree with the bad reviews....
Like the others, I read MTC several times. Yes, if you just want instruction on the 10 steps, you don't need this book. However, if you've tried to follow them but just can seem to stick to the program, this book is for you.

His 'exercises' on self-awareness was written for me and was only hinted in the first book. It literally changed my life. For once, I have been able to stick to the 10 steps for 7 months now, have lost 30 pounds and am a much happier person in general. Oprah's story was nice, but I often wish I had Bob around to talk about ME for a change. This book does that.

Like I said, if you just want instruction and already have MTC, don't bother. But if you can't seem to stick to the program and can't figure out why, buy this book! You may learn something about yourself!

1-0 out of 5 stars I have to agree with the other low reviews
Making the Connction was terrific, and when I read Keeping the Connection, it was a few days after re-reading MTC. Literally 1/3 to 1/2 the book was a copy of the first. I was extremely disappointed. It is a fair book on its own, but do not bother to buy both. And besides, Oprah's story in MTC is really wonderful. Buy something by Suzanne Schlosberg instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Repeat the Connection
There is no point in buying this book if you have read Make the Connection. Calling this a new book borders on fraud. ... Read more

This is an exceptional Self Growth tool. Mr Tracy approaches achievement in concise, clear steps. I listen to the tapes every chance I get. I have heard this tape no less than 8 times and each time I find another application to my life. I strongly recommend this eye opening material for anyone who wants to better his or her life !

Brian Tracy is a master motivator & sales and persoal development trainer. I repeat the top line, NOBODY DOES IT BETTER THAN BRIAN TRACY. This program and "Pyschology of Selling" were my first Brian Tracy programs. My confidence soared and my sales flew. This program will help you in every area of your life. You'll make lasting changes.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most complete personal develpment program
This abridged tape set is good enough to give you powerful information. You will learn many of Brian Tracy's powerful strategies for success. Play it in your car. I recommend the book Maximum Achievement on which this tape program is based and the unabridged 6 audio tape set by Nightingale-Conant which is more complete.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice... just nice
Well, I like to listen to educational and motivational audio tapes while I'm driving. Keep that in mind when you hear me say that this tape is a nice one. I think it's nice because it educated me about psychology, however my life didn't change and I still make my lousy monthly salary as I did before I bought this tape! LOL The worst part about it (I guess) is that the speaker (also the author) sounded at some points like a salesman... or in other words, insincere... but that's just my opinion. Anyway, it's not a waste of time, and considering the price I think that it's not a bad decision to get it :)

5-0 out of 5 stars May be the best ($) you can spend on yourself
I came upon hard times and was looking for a way to improve my mindset. Didn't have the energy to read, so found this Title used through Amazon and thought while I drive it would be better to listen to this than mindless music.

It has been a transforming experience. As I listened, I realized how I was self-defeating myself and how badly I needed to change my attitude. The tape goes into detail with examples and the narrator's voice comes across with knowledge and a real feeling of wanting to share his insights from a great deal of research.

I have since made some amazing changes to my life such as lose 52 pounds and run in the NY City Marathon, and I never, ever dreamed I could.

This tape has lead to me to purchase many other tapes to listen to as I drive. It's great, it an education while sitting in traffic and you don't mind the traffic nearly as much. I will say that I have listened to many tapes now, but this one really has been the most valuable. It is ashame it may get lost among the thousands of tapes and books out there on Self-Improvement. ... Read more

I can only imagine what Lenny's seminars and workshops are like. They must be outstanding!

5-0 out of 5 stars AN EASY WAY TO ELOQUENCE
Throat dry and raspy? Hands damp and clammy, perhaps even a little shaky? Don't worry, chances are you're not coming down with the flu but simply about to speak in public. Why the majority of us are rendered incapable when standing before a group of faces, even loving ones, is a mystery.

However, there is no mystery about the help for our podium petrification found in "10 Days To More Confident Public Speaking" by The Princeton Language Institute. After listening and practicing the useful tips found in this audio many will be almost as eloquent as reader Peter McHugh!

Listeners are shown how to be laid back, be comfortable with their own unique selves, and, of great importance, given insider tips on establishing an instant rapport with an audience. Suggestions as to how to integrate humor abound, as well as memorization techniques. Once a speaker knows the words he or she wants are firmly in mind, there is an added comfort and confidence.

Whether you going to be up before a local historical society or a judge, 10 DAYS TO MORE CONFIDENT PUBLIC SPEAKING is an invaluable aid.

Book Description

The rules of relationships have changed.

In our generational movement toward wholeness, women want to be more than mothers and homemakers and men aspire to loving relationships rather than simply being warriors and work machines. The age-old distinctions between male and female roles have blurred, and the rules of relationships have not yet caught up, creating confusion and frustration.

Our parents couldn't teach us what they didn't know. As children, the lessons we learned from the adult relationships around us did not prepare us for our current adult love interests and challenges. Today, men and women expect relationships to enhance the total quality of their lives, meeting both their practical and emotional needs. And, when the need for individual fulfillment clashes with the desire to have a lasting relationship, couples often resort to divorce.

With the extensive experience gained through his seminars, Dr. Gray has discovered several keys to happiness within relationships and shares this information with listeners. Through the development of relationship skills that address contemporary needs of individuals and couples, John Gray offers practical ways to enjoy and celebrate the differences between men and women and create long-lasting, fulfilling relationships.

5-0 out of 5 stars What your mother couldn't tell you and father didn't know...
This book thoroughly explains the major differences between Venus and Mars. I especially enjoyed reading about Mars (cave time). This refers to the personal time Men need to reconnect with themselves. It also gave a synopsis of Mars and Venus in conversations. It's amazing how Men (Mars) interpret what Females (Venus) say. It's no wonder the two planets are always at war. If Men (Mars) could understand how Venus emotions work, maybe there would be less conflict between the two. This book covers many issues relating to couples and relationships. I highly recommend all women and men to read this book and others written by Dr. John Gray. He has a firm understanding on how Men and Women are total opposites in regard to life, love and the pursuit for happiness.

5-0 out of 5 stars gray presents many useful ideas here....
that could benefit both males and females . . . he really seems to know what makes both sexes "tick," and i found myself realting to the many of the excellent examples in the book

5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for happily and unhappily married couples!!
Obviously our "Reader from Brazil" has some type of vendetta against Dr. Gray. My wife and I have read this book together and have achieved a deeper intimacy in our marriage as a result. The only complaint I would expect to see would be that he is not always "politically correct". (Which, by the way, I found quite refreshing) The bottom line: Men & women ARE different! Mr. Gray gives couples a roadmap that outlines how we perceive and react differently to lifes ups & downs and how to grow together rather than drift apart.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good tapes for advanced relationship skills
We found this much more useful than the original Mars/Venus material, since we had a lot of those skills under control. This material goes quite a bit further and has really helped us a lot. Well worth a listen! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good, wonderful voice
Both my wife and I suffer from stress in our everyday lives. In despair I bought this CD from Amazon. Lo and behold, it works wonders! First and foremost, she has a wonderful calming voice. The CD is well structured and not too long. Most of it is hypnotic suggestions to help you relax, and one small exercise in visualisation. This is one of the best hypnotic/relaxation CDs I have encountered. It really relaxes us while at the same time giving us hypnotic suggestions tom reduce stress.

5-0 out of 5 stars Relaxation works.
The CD uses breathing and progressive muscle relaxation as induction technique.

After reading some articles on hypnosis online and elsewhere I had expected something in the line of walking down stairs or riding an elevator for induction. But this works quite as well for me. It does not require you to build up tension before the relaxation (like the Jacobson method would); except maybe for three deep breaths you are asked to take at the beginning.

I was curious whether an audio CD would work with me at all (not being a native speaker), but I had very few difficulties. I had to look up the word "diaphragm" though. I have mostly used the relaxation exercise and only once or twice listened to the stress reduction part. So I cannot give advice on its effectiveness.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow! What great results!
This CD is amazing! I work for an air conditioning company in Palm Springs - so you can imagine how stressful my job gets when it's 125 degrees! I felt sure that it would either drive me to drink or that I would have to resign...but since I started using the Stress Reduction CD, I find that I take everything much more "in-stride". I started out with Sleep CD because the stress at work was keeping me up at night. That worked so well that I decided to try some of the other products. I can't tell you how much of a difference this has made for me, at work as well as in my everyday life. I'm healthier and happier - and my husband is DEFINITELY happier! I've turned several of my co-workers on to Ms. Decker's products and I wish I could tell the whole world!

5-0 out of 5 stars It was great!
I have had a serious fear of fire, which I've been in therapy for for almost a year now, and it's been working. Wouldn't you know, I was driving home from work last night, and I passed a small brush fire. I was suprised at how upset this made me. Awesome timing, but my CD was delivered last night as well! I listened to it, and not only slept very well, but woke up this morning with such a sense of peacefulness. Ms. Decker's voice was so soothing, and I found that I responded well to her instructions. I'm a passive believer in meditation and hypnosis and the power of the brain, but after seeing all the wonderful reviews for these CDs I decided to purchase it and am very pleased! I bought the Deep Sleep CD for my husband, and he's the skeptic, but willing to try, so we'll see how it works for him!

5-0 out of 5 stars Very calming
I agree with the other reviewers--this is an excellent CD. Her approach and her voice are just right. I don't feel I am as "hypnotized" (in a heightened suggestive state) as I am just focused, but the results are likely the same. My only very small complaint is that the editor in me flinches inwardly just a bit every time she uses the phrase "As best as you are able." That will be my next goal--to not notice that! ... Book Description

Nearly every time you see him, he's laughing, or at least he's smiling. And he makes everyone else around him feel like smiling. He's the Dalai Lama, the spiritual and temporal leader of Tibet, the Nobel Prize winner, and increasingly popular speaker and statesman. Why is he so popular? Even after spending just a few minutes in his presence you can't help feeling just a little bit happier.

The Dalai Lama is probably one of the only people in the world who if you ask him if he's happy, even though he's suffered the loss of his country, will give you an unconditional "yes." What's more, he'll tell you that happiness is the purpose of life, and that "the very motion of our life is towards happiness." How to get them has always been the question. He's tried to answer it before, but he's never had the help of a psychiatrist to get the message across in a context we can easily understand.

Through meditations, stories and the meeting of Buddhism and psychology, the Dalai Lama shows us how to defeat day-to-day depression, anxiety, anger, jealousy, or just an ordinary bad mood. He discusses relationships, health, family, work, and spirituality to show us how to ride through life's obstacles on a deep and abiding source of inner peace. Based on 2500 years of Buddhist meditations mixed with a healthy dose of common sense, The Art of Happiness is an audiobook that crosses the boundaries of all traditions to help listeners with the difficulties common to all human beings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Counter to the negative reviews
I have noticed several reviews that blast Howard C. Cutler for the way he wrote this book.

I would like to say that I think he did a good job.

As an enthusiast of Buddhism, I am inclined to agree that I would have liked to heard more from the Dalai Lama himself, but I understand that the intent of this book was to allow non-buddhists to learn to appreciate and to implement this marvelous system of Buddhist psychology in their lives.

In some senses, Buddhism is a science of understanding and mending the human psyche. For myself, I already understood a lot of the principles in the book, but it was very nice to hear a western psychologist's viewpoint. Sometimes I get lost in the volume of material there is to read about the practice of Buddhism. There are many different approaches to Buddhist thought.

This book is perfect for any non-Buddhist who would like to get a taste of the basic psychology derived from the teacings of one of the most brilliant men in history, The Buddha. The Dalai Lama is a wonderful man in his own right, and is a very wise and worldly translator of this complex system of thought. His profound and well thought out answers to the questions posed by Cutler reflect the depth of his understanding of the human condition and the remedies prescribed by the Buddha to end the suffering that we all must endure.

The Dalai Lama does not give a full exposition of the Buddhist teachings on any of the subjects presented in the book, but his answers are profound and can be put to use in the daily life of any westerner who desires to be happy. Cutler is a reassuring figure in the book who is there to raise the questions that any westerner might raise. More importantly, he is there to compare and contrast the words of the Dalai Lama to the work of western psychologists and to confirm and even exalt the approach of the Dalai Lama.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide To Happiness And Mental Health
The Declaration of Independence asserts our self-evident right to pursue happiness, but doesn't teach us how to do so. The Dalai Lama says happiness is the goal of human existence and teaches us not just how to rid ourselves of the negative thoughts from which unhappiness springs, but also how to grow into an habitually positive frame of mind. This is not a selfish pursuit since compassion and altruism are understood as essential to personal happiness. In an age of road rage and air rage, depression and anxiety, such a guide to mental hygiene and growth is needed and welcome. I was initially disappointed that the book had two authors, but now consider this a strength. Dr. Culter not only adds western psychological information that complements "Buddhist" doctrine, but also provides good descriptions of the Dalai Lama, engages him in a running dialogue, and asks the questions that I would like to ask, particularly how a non-Buddhist would use the teaching just given. As it turns out there is very little in this book that is strictly "religious" or that would be unacceptable or impractical advice to a believer in another or in no faith at all. The Dalai Lama addresses himself specifically to such people. Obviously the book needs to be put into practice, not just read.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good introduction to Buddhism and Dalai Lamas thoughts
This is a good book to help you learn about the principles and ideas of Buddhism. Written for a Western audience, it takes up problems of daily life and how to be happy with the right mode of thinking. How to live a balanced, peaceful and happy life. Reading the book is easy. How to follow its teachings perhaps not that easy, but obviously worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Happiness Explained By The Dalai Lama
This is a thoroughly enjoyable book that is easy and interesting to read, understand, and most of all apply to your life.
Here are a couple of quotes from this book that shed light on His Holiness The Dalai Lama's Views:

P. 173: "The ability to look at events from different perspectives can be very helpful. Then, practicing this, one can use certain experiences, certain tragedies to develop a calmness of mind. One must realize that every phenomena, every event, has different aspects."

"It seems that often when problems arise, our outlook becomes narrow. All of our attention may be focused on worrying about the problem, and we may have a sense that we're the only one that is going through such difficulties. This can lead to a kind of self-absorption that can make the problem seem very intense. When this happens, I think seeing things from a wider perspective can definitely help - realizing for instance, that there are many other people who have gone through similar experiences, and even worse experiences."

When Howard Cutler questioned about dealing with anger, his question was: "...You might think about an event...even much later, and every time you think about it you become angry all over again. How would you suggest dealing with (this.")
The Dalai Lama had this to say on P. 175: "If you look from a different angel, then surely the person who caused this anger in you will have a lot of other positive aspects, positive qualities. If you look carefully, you will also find that the act which has made you angry has also given you certain opportunities, something which otherwise would not have been possible, even from your point of view. So with effort you'll be able to see many different angles to a single event. This will help."

By reading this book, you will gain a greater understanding of HOW to transform the difficulties in your life, by transforming your views of them. It will greatly contribute to your inner peace, as well as peaceful relations with others, along with how to deal with life's constant changes with calm and assurance.
Highly Recommended! Barbara Rose, author 'If God Was Like Man'

3-0 out of 5 stars FACT: Teachings in New Testament have Buddhist roots
The book is ok .... I disagree with the retarded Christian from FL. It doesn't take a degree in rocket science to note that the Old Testament and the New Testament are of a completely different flavor. The Old Testament is full of fire and brimstone, an eye-for-an-eye kind of stuff whereas the New Testament has a distinctly Buddhist slant. Gee, I wonder if the fact that Jesus Christ spent several years in Tibet studying with the Buddhist monks had an influence on his teachings?!?!... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Insight and Understanding for any dog owner
This book was written with utmost respect and understanding for dogs. The monks understand the pack dynamic and have devised a training manual no dog owner should be without. Many people bash this book claiming it teaches you to hit your dog, but this is untrue. First and foremost the monks emphasize the importance of praise and patience when training your dog. Only when all else fails, and only for exttreme behavior (agression / biting), do the monks recommend physical punishment. The monks are not big on treats, but not because it spoils the dog. Rather, they prefer verbal and physical praise because it creates a closer bond between owner and dog. I would recommend both "How to be your dog's best friend" and "The art of raising a puppy" to any current or will be dog owner. An investment well worth the money and time to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my dog!
The first day I had my rescue dog he snapped at my 1-year-old daughter. I was contemplating sending him back, but someone suggested this book to help teach him "pack" behavior, i.e. that he is lower in the pack hierarchy than my daughter. It wasn't long before my daughter could safely do anything with him. I was also able to housebreak him, crate train him, and just make him a good dog based on the training techniques.

Yes, the discipline techniques can seem a little extreme, but they are by no means inhumane. And they WORK because the dog understands. My dog usually "got it" after one time and stopped the behavior. I have not had to discipline him for anything in several years. Now he understands from just a look, a word or a gesture. This book helped us get to that point. Highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book
I just finished this book and found it to be a well organized and thorough treatise on the subject. Those who say the book focuses too much on punishment must not have read the latest edition. The monks no longer recommend the alpha roll and "strongly discourage its use to our clients". Rewards are used as the primary means of training. Punishment is only recommended in certain severe situations.

If you really want to learn about your dog and your relationship with your dog, buy this book. I loved it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
I have a very large dog that tried to bite my 7 year old (the youngest in the house) when he he was about 6 months old. At 6 months old he already weighed about 80 pounds and wanted very badly to be Alpha. Before reading this book I would have gotten rid of the dog. However, I decided to try the Alpha Wolf technique and see if he could be broken of this. I did it ONCE and the dog NEVER snapped at my child or any other child again. That was 5 years ago. This technique really does work. Read the book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent info for seasoned dog owners
Although I grew up with dogs until I was 21, I am now 26 and buying my own first puppy, so I thought I would research training a bit before I bring home my new lab.

What I really liked about this book is that is spent a lot of time explaining the reasons behind the recommendations. It allows you to understand why certain methods are effective, and why it fits with the way that a dog's mind works.

I found this book much better and more thurough than other books on the subject. Many books seems to be a step-by-step intruction manual on how to train your dog. This book is more like taking a short course on how and why training works.

All the negative reviews of this book have to do with dicipline. Please ignore these people. You can read for yourself the sections dealing with discipline using the "look inside this book" feature. You will see that the authors have a true love of dogs and that they only use dicipline in a humane manner with the least amount of force necessary.

I highly recommend this book to everyone form a first-time dog buyer, to someone who has spoent their lives around dogs. ... Read more

Book Description

James and Helen now have two growing children, Jimmy and Rosie, who bring a new kind of adventure into James's life. The Herriots live at Skeldale House on the edge of the Yorkshire dales, whose peace, solitude and feel of the wild make the countryside both thrilling and comforting at the same time.

It is the 1950s, a time of new advances in veterinary medicine, but the hard-working people of Yorkshire have not changed. That included James's dear old friends Siegfried and Tristan -- neither of whom had lost his great good humor. We also meet new friends, as James travels behind the Iron Curtain and learns about a world very different from his own.As always, his wonder, his exhilaration, his affection glow in every word, whether he is talking about the glories of the moors and dales, or the fascination of the people.

5-0 out of 5 stars A feel-good classic!
This is the fourth in a series written by a Scottish veterinarian who takes a job in Yorkshire, England, working under Siegfried Farnon. James Herriot, Farnon and his brother Tristan work on all sorts of animals from parakeets to draft horses.

James Herriot has a wonderful ability to poke fun at himself, as is illustrated in one of his earliest essays from the first work, All Things Bright and Beautiful, where he clips the beak of a budgie, inadvertently suffocating the poor creature. We then see him struggle to find a replacement for the little bird, its owner's best friend. Later, we watch Herriot's bumbling attempt to court his future wife Helen.

In The Lord God Made Them All, Herriot is returning from World War II where he served as an RAF officer; he's married with two children but he still works for Siegfried Farnon. Siegfried will remind you of a character from Dickens. He's an excellent veterinary but his many quirks and foibles make him a trying boss at times. Then there's his ne'er-do-well brother, Tristan. They're constantly fighting and Herriot usually winds up in the middle. The Yorkshire farmers are also fascinating. Herriot has a wonderful facility with dialect and some of the dialogue is hilarious.

In the first story Herriot sets out to "nip" (castrate) a calf. "There's nobbut one, Mr. Herriot," the farmer says. "An enormous black animal galloped out . . . I stared at the spreading horns, the great hump of muscle on the shoulder and the coldly glittering eyes. It only needed a blast on a trumpet and sand instead of cobbles and I was in the Plaza de Toros in Madrid."

Quite often Herriot serves as a psychologist, to his human clients. In one story, Herriot is awakened at one in the morning to treat Myrtle the beagle, whose drunken owner has a guilt complex about leaving his dog alone to attend the races. There's nothing wrong with the dog, but to assuage the owner's fears, Herriot gives Myrtle a vitamin tablet. This happens again and again, and when Herriot finally confronts the owner about the imaginary illnesses, the dog is really sick.

Yes, the joke is usually on Herriot, but if your animal is sick, you call James Herriot and sometimes you call him just to talk.
These are wonderful, nostalgic stories that take the reader back to a simpler time. It's so good you'll find yourself reading it as a pick-me-up when you feel blue.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Fitting Conclusion
My wife and I just finished reading the whole series of four Herriot books. I think that the first one (_All Creatures Great and Small_) is probably the best one overall. The author probably put the best stories he knew into his first book. But there are several delightful stories spread through the later books, and all four make for enjoyable reading.

This book has a couple unique features. One is that the author goes on a couple international adventures traveling as caretaker of some overseas animal shipments. These are interesting travel stories on their own. Also in this book we meet James' children and see them grow up to some degree.

_The Lord God Made Them All_ is a fittingly warm and pleasant conclusion to a really enjoyable series of books.

5-0 out of 5 stars a beloved memoir
James Herriot once again takes you on a magical journey through his whimsical hamlet of Yorkshire Dales, stealing your heart at every stop along the way. Anyone who picks up this book will be immediately captivated by the depth of love and respect for animals that embodies all of Herriot's books. Every character you meet, be it human or animal, will tug your heartstrings in a manner that you never expected from such a humble book whose clear honesty parallels that of the other books in an unforgettable series. You don't have to be an animal crazed lover like me to enjoy the simple joys of this book- it is definitely a cherished read, you won't regret it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good compilation of vignettes
I read James Herriot's first four books when I was a child. Now in my 30's, I recently picked up his fifth book.I was struck by how these stories are ostensibly about animals, but say vastly more about their human owners and the need for companionship.Herriot's writing style is appropriately simple and unadorned, which atcually helps increase the impact of his stories. However, his writing can be a bit repetitive at times. There really is not a plot, just a selection of stories from his years as a a vet and resident of a small Yorkshire town.

Unfortunately, he jumps around in time a bit too much (from 1947 to the mid-1950s).For example, he includes journal passages from trips he has taken as a vet escorting animals for sale to other countries. These stories are fairly interesting, but don't really belong here and are interspersed between all the other stories, further leading to a lack of context.Overall, a worthwhile, but flawed book that is significantly buoyed by Herriot's obvious love of animals and their owners.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heck of a Book
James Herriot is a remarkable author. He proves this once again in the last of his set of novels, The Lord God Made Them All.In it Herriot tells us maore heartwarming tales of his life as a Yorkshire veterinarian. He writes very down to earth, which allows readers to relate to his stories very well.Especially in this book. Herriot not only writes about his experiences as a vet , but about becoming a father, and experiences hehas while his children are young. An old client of Herriot once tells him, "Aye, there's no doubt about it, when your children are young and growin' up around ye- that's when it's best. It's the same for everybody, only a lot o'folk don't know it and a lot find out when it's too late."(369) James also writes about his voyage to Russia on a freighter with a bunch of pedigree sheep. And his journey to Istanbul which was supposed to be luxurous and relaxing.Needless to say, it was far from that.Nevertheless, as in all his stories, Herriot is able to turn them around to make us laugh and fill us with wisdom. After reading the book, I have aquired a better apprecition of life, and high hopes for the future. You can't help but think that way when he ends the book with the words, "....there are great days ahead!" ... Book Description

“There is perhaps no more important task for a person than the search for happiness, and no more reliable guide in that quest than Dennis Prager and Happiness Is A Serious Problem.” - Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen To Good People*

“In all my studies of happiness, one of the most significant conclusions I have drawn is that there is little correlation between the circumstances of people's lives and how happy they are.”

Here's the Repair Manual We Should Have Been Handed at Birth. When you ask people about their most cherished values in life, “happiness” is always at the top of the list. However, unhappiness does not seem to be the exception in contemporary society'it's practically the rule. Why? Because human nature is insatiable. In order to be happy, we first have to battle ourselves.

In Happiness Is a Serious Problem, Dennis Prager provides you with a lifetime's worth of insights and techniques for beating human nature. He teaches you how to repair the problem spots in your nature and how to find lasting happiness.

Attain Happiness by Understanding It.

How can we overcome our insatiable natures? Using real life examples, Prager helps you understand the difference between what will make you personally happy and what others have convinced you will make you happy, and he shows how to isolate and repair these false assumptions.

Happiness Is a Habit.

Prager teaches you how to shockproof your happiness against the inevitable trials of a profoundly difficult world. From establishing a sense of meaning and purpose to your life to letting happiness be a by-product of other pursuits, Prager gives you the tools and strategies you'll need to make your happiness last.

Happiness Is an Obligation'to Yourself and to Others.

Not only do we have a right to be happy, we have an obligation to be happy. Our happiness has an effect on the lives of everyone around us'it provides them with a positive environment in which to thrive and to be happy themselves.\

“Ask any child what it was like to grow up with an unhappy parent, or ask parents what daily pain they suffer if they have an unhappy child,” argues Prager. “It then becomes obvious why happiness is a moral obligation.”

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, thought-provoking; a MUST read for everyone
Whether or not you are a fan of Dennis Prager's talk shows, a half-hour with this book will prove to you that, not only can this man think, but he has an incomparable gift for elucidating one of life's key preoccupations: the trials and tribulations associated with one's quest for happiness. For me, this book is not so much of a "repair manual," as it is one of the most insightful, succinctly written books on how happiness is linked to human nature, philosophy, morals, temperament and values.

Mr. Prager writes: "The greatest battle for happiness is with our own nature." If we can look inward and understand our drives and the intrinsic characteristics of what it means to be human, we then can use our intellect, spirituality and relationships with others to develop a stronger affinity for happiness. Or, perhaps, create in happiness an affinity for us.

The author divides the book into three parts consisting of thirty-one chapters. If read from front to back, the book flows nicely from "Premises" to "Major Obstacles..." to "Attitudes and Behaviors That are Essential to Happiness." What I especially like is that the individual chapters stand alone, and are great for highlighting the author's views on very specific issues and problems. The most interesting ones deal with the dilemma between happiness and fun, the problems with expectations, and the preponderance of victimhood in today's world. Prager has some profound views on these, and many other topics. He makes you think.

Overall, "Happiness..." turned out to be enlightening and quite easy to read (you won't need a dictionary by your side). I'd rank it at the top of my list (also check out "When Bad Things Happen to Good People") of books dealing with life's disappointments and successes, emotion and human nature.

3-0 out of 5 stars Prager offers common sense guide to contentment
Probably the most amusing anecdote in Dennis Prager's "Happiness Is a Serious Problem" concerns a Jewish rabbi who is unhappy because he can't find a suitable wife. When Prager asked the rabbi what qualities he was looking for in a woman, the rabbi's reply was: "A Playboy bunny who studies the Torah."

You can probably guess what Prager's advice was, and what his worldview is regarding the relationship between happiness and expectations. Really, what this book is largely about is contentment -- finding ways to be satisfied with the status quo. Certainly he advocates doing what is intelligent and reasonable to change the circumstances if you so desire, but that most of our problems stem from dissatisfaction with situations that are perfectly acceptable, even though they fall short of our preferences.

In any book that dispenses common-sense advice, the greatest risk is that of oversimplification. Inevitably, Prager falls into that trap at various points. Fortunately, he never makes the mistake of implying that the kinds of shifts in perspective he advocates are easy to make.

Further, Prager suggests that a spiritual life -- with its implicit realization that there are some things we simply do not understand, but must nevertheless come to terms with -- is a desirable thing. This, too, mitigates the extent to which he might be perceived as understating the world's complexities.

I purchased the audio cassette version of the book, primarily because I'm most familiar with Prager as a radio personality, and it seemed appropriate to have these observations conveyed to me in a similar way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wow - What a powerful, life changing book
I read some of those reviews and they are garbage its obvious they didnt read the book, I am a 23 y/o single male, and It is uncool to think and believe conservitave / central views. I am finding each time I talk to some one who is liberal I am able to get them to say you know what I never thought of it that way. Many of these issues were brought up in this book. This book should be a text book in school.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but should I have expected less?
I enjoyed this book, but it's not exactly what I expected. He does argue from every conceivable angle that our expectations will set us up for disappointment, so I guess I asked for it. Somehow I managed to put "The Pursuit of" in front of the title because I tend to believe that happiness is a by-product of our service to humanity, but the book is actually about seeking happiness for one self. Mr. Prager does emphasize how we tend to seek happiness in vain through our quests for self-indulgence, and suggests that we seek meaning in our lives. He's very logical and reasonable, even if one doesn't agree with him on every count, but I don't find him to be particularly profound. I agree with him strongly on some points, but there is nothing new in his writing that would have me reconsider my own philosophy, or reflect on how his viewpoint might reflect a truth in my own experience.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life
This was simply the best book I have ever read on this topic. It goes through every aspect of your life and explains exactly what happiness looks like. It does not go into extreme detail into each aspect but that is why it is awesome. You can read this and then if you need more help on any certain topic, go research that more deeply. ... Read more

Book Description

There is only one John Douglas.

We first met Douglas in Mindhunter, which told the story of his brilliant and terrifying with the FBI until his retirement in 1995.And now, again with coauthor Mark Olshaker, he goes even further. We accompany him on the Journey Into Darkness that marks every case he examines; every instance in which he helps police identify the unknown perpetrator of a violent series of rapes, kidnappings, or murders through his remarkable criminal personality profiling.

In this fascinating audio experience, we journey with some of the brilliant and sensitive agents John has trained, who have carried on his work. We take a startlingly fresh look at the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman as if John had been asked by the LAPD to identify the killer through behavioral profiling. And we hear how a lifetime around killers and their victims has shaped his views on justice and punishment.

The Journey Into Darkness is a perilous one, but ultimately a hopeful one as well. For not only do we see from the men and women who track the most sadistic of criminals what a powerful weapon profiling has become, we also get advice on how we might better keep our children, our families and ourselves safe from harm.By making the Journey Into Darkness with John Douglas and his colleagues, we come away with an insight into the human condition that no one else can offer. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A read that scared the daylights out of me!
Though this book still has John Douglas's usual pat on his own back all through it, it's truly a terrifying read.

The only unfortunate part of the book is Douglas's rehash of the Simpson case (yawn), and his showing us how he'd profile the killer is a big bore.....and it's in here because John Douglas likes to talk about how good he is (and I'm sure he is....but the man has an ego problem).

Aside from that profile, the reading is so scary that I couldn't sleep, and as far as true crime books, that rarely happens to me.

It's an excellent read, and gives some worthy "tips" as far as your own self-preservation, and the safety of your children.

In spite of Douglas himself, I enjoyed this book almost too much. I was afraid to go in front of my windows for days!

Absolutely worth buying and reading...

4-0 out of 5 stars Examining the mind of a killer
"Journey into Darkness" gives a harrowing portrait of the brutality of murder. The book includes several stories of actual criminal cases involving serial killers, rapists, pedophiles, etc. With his years of experience in the FBI, Douglas has developed the ability to predict the profile of a killer with an excellent degree of accuracy. He is straightforward and honest about his opinions on crime and our system of justice. This is good reading material, but be forewarned: with its graphic explanations and disturbing nature, this book is not intended for the weak of heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real Journey into Darkness
I have been an avid true crime reader for several years although this is the first book that I have read by John E. Douglas. This book makes you see the darkness that a lot of people seem to have inside and what they are prepared to do to realise their fantasies whatever the cost. I was not able to put down this book even though it filled me with anxiety and sadness because the title is true - he really does take you on a journey into Darkness, although John Douglases telling of these brutal cases is masterly. He explains even the most complicated of theories in a way that is understandable to all. After reading this book I have already ordered his other books and can't wait for them to be delivered. Gripping stuff!!!

3-0 out of 5 stars Getting Redundant
If you've already read Mindhunter, you needn't bother with Journey. It is essentially the same stuff, with just enough words switched around to justify a new title. If you haven't read either Mindhunter or Journey, flip a coin.

4-0 out of 5 stars Detailed analysis of killer's minds
This book is very precise and detailed but a bit scattered at times. Very good psychological analysis and details without getting too graphic or drawn out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Blessed are those who listen and absorb this cassette
I have listened to sevearal of Stephen and Ondrea Levine's tapes and read several of their books, in large part to get in touch with the grief related to the loss of my mother this last March. Without question the Levines have made this deep, dark path called grief much more understandable for me. In fact, I feel as if I have been given a gift in learning about life by working thorugh this grief. That is, by learning from the Levines I have grown emensly as a human being. This is a gift, I might add, that I would gladly return in an instant to get my mother back.

That said, this cassetee is a wonderful crystalization of grief related work that I have read/heard by the Levines. The tools are largely the same, (e.g., soft belly and forgiveness to let go of the armoring around the heart), but the approach is refreshingly new. For those who are grieving this is a safe place to enter into the darkness of fear and guilt and depression, and to let go of holding on. There is an especially powerful meditation on letting go of the armoring around the heart that can and should be practiced again and again. For grief work is deep, enriching internal work that, that requires focussed attention, which this mediation and the overall tape provide.

For those seeking to go into the darkness, looking for a way to braille through life's darkest turns, this cassette will prove an invaluable compasion - well worth its price. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Clear and persuasive
I own and have listened to the tape twice.

To me, the key benefits are:
* The learning system is comprehensive.
* Brian's voice is attractive, the approach is straightforward and easy to listen to.
* The materials are clear and persuasive.
* The music between each piece of recording is stimulating and entertaining (hence easy to absorb the materials).

By the way, I am wondering what Brian will do for young children to guide them towards success and happiness. I am a parent of two and would like to hear something from Brian. Thank you.

2-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs Down
Though there are a few interesting tips, the tape is boring and useless. I would not buy it again.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful and practical steps to help you learn
This book gives you practical steps to help you: really learn and master a topic, thoroughly memorize information, speed read while retaining the content, etc.

I had never heard of a some of the techniques such as mapping.

I am going to teach this to my wife and eventually to my children (when they start reading).

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid entry level overview
I have listened to Brian Tracy's tapes and read his books many times over the past years and this tape set is a useful addition to his set.

It covers many of the topics touched on in some of his other works but this brings it all together in one spot with the addition of a number of new good practices.

A useful addition to my 4 wheeled university.
