I'm 5'4" and have always weighed 115-120 lbs. After giving birth to my daughter, I weighed 147 pounds. I didn't exercise during my pregnancy, and I didn't start trying to re-gain my pre-pregnancy figure until after my 6-week postpartum check-up. The first time I went to the gym, I came home crying, because I was very much out of shape, and unable to accomplish anything on familiar weight machines. Instead of heading back to the gym, I ordered this book, and now I'm back down to 115 lbs. My friends and family keep telling me how great I look for someone who just had a baby three months ago.
This program has been great for me, as a new mother. 1) The exercise program includes a lot of walking, which my baby loves!
2) The recipes are quick and easy to prepare. 3) Denise has written out grocery lists which save me tons of time.
This book is great for busy new moms who want to shed pounds from pregnancy.

I read the book in a couple of days while nursing my second baby. I can do the workout with my baby and toddler. It is four days of walking and four days of toning muscles using wieghts. I finished week 1 : portion control on the diet plan. I can finally fit into my jeans while doing the strength toning (not recommended). I loved the DVD. The eating plan in the book is just as wonderful. And I can do it while nursing a seventeen pound baby. I love it!

My sister used this book to lose weight she had put on after having a baby-and she was never exactly skinny to begin with. Without too much strain, she has managed to put on 80 lbs. by sitting around, eating bon-bons, and reading this book!Just Kidding!

Alright, I know this is serious stuff to some people. The truth is she now looks great, and the attention she gets from guys has increased dramatically-usually it decreases after having a baby, so that's saying something. I think women everywhere should give this a try, but my sister should trade her copy for a box of chocolate bars so I don't have to worry about her so much!

If you know a fat woman, get her this. Sorry, I'm just having a hard time taking this seriously.

She gives it to you honestly, and like any diet plan, you will lose weight. But with her diet she doesn't eliminate certain food groups like breads and fruits. She gets you moving with her motivational words and years of expereince. The DVD is a great complement to the diet plan, and don't forget her FREE morning workouts on the Lifetime Channel! She has not been a thin personal all her life, she has had two kids, so her encouragement and determination to stay fit and healthy into her 40's is real and refreshing. Like any diet plan, your determination and stick-to-it-ness is the only way you will see success!

As a fan of Denise Austin's I had to purchase her latest book, Fit and Fabulous After 40 and I was very impressed with her book. I knew it would be good since Densie wrote it. It's so refreshing to have someone teaching realistic and sensible approaches to having and keeping good health. She is my favorite fitness expert and one reason for that is she's believable and real not some Hollywood star who doesn't have the knowledge and dedication that Denise has. I'm still in the process of reading her book and am enjoying every minute of it. I highly recommend it for anyone who really does want to be Fit and Fabulous After 40.

I bought this book and the video Staying Fit at any age. Both have been great assests for me. So motivating in fact, that I get up at 7am now to do her Fit and Lite and Denise Austin works out on Lifetime. Then I flip open the book and plan goals for the day. She is very motivating. I think it's because she's 'natural' ah..no...'falseness'....if you get what I mean. She's just regular and she treats us that way too. A good buy for the money, I certainly recommend it. The receipes are great

I see now the book's on sale. Lots of ideas and tips in here. Nothing earth shaking, but good ideas on how to implement all the things we know we need to do. I like that it's comprehensive--a little bit about a lot of things--skin care, diet, exercise, emotional tips, health, etc. Ms. Austin is inspirational because she is loaded with "can-do" attitude. So overall, a good value.

This was a great book to read. Full of common sense and healthy advice. Denise's approach to a healthy lifestyle is refreshing after all of the don't eat this don't eat that diets today. I am recommending this book to all of my friends.

Denise Austin has produced a real winner here--I have been using this book's exercise program for four weeks now (three with the beginner's program, one with the complete schedule), and the results have been awesome! Using a minimum of equipment (one section with exercise bands, one with small dumbells, one with a balance ball, most with no equipment at all) and a maximum of careful instruction, Denise guides you through the very specialized methods of doing Pilates exercises, as well as doing other kinds of exercises (yoga, weight training) in the Pilates manner.

Pilates is a form of exercise that concentrates very specifically on the body's "powerhouse", the complex of abdominal muscles that support the back and supply much of the core strength for all forms of physical training. Denise has a lot of personal experience in this form of exercise, and is able to translate that experience into instruction which, followed carefully, guards against injury and assures the maximum results from the special Pilates emphasis.

Especially in the beginning, but throughout the program, it is very necessary and beneficial to follow these instructions to the letter and do the moves exactly as Denise outlines them (as she says in the book, "Think quality, not quantity", a somewhat novel, very effective approach). This especially guards against injury to muscle groups such as the lower back area. Also, one could do these exercises without the special Pilates emphasis and gain only a fraction of the benefits.

As one who has had lower back problems for a long time, I can testify that this Pilates program works beautifully to keep the possibility of injury to a minimum (in my case, zero), and allows for muscular and postural strength development in this area that is nearly unbelievable. Denise also includes information about diet, scheduling, and positive attitude that is worth reading and giving a try.

Muscular and strength training with Pilates leads to development of long, lean, supple musculature and strength with flexibility. As an example, recently I was helping to put together a set at a public access television station, and I had to lift, carry, and place a heavy coffee table which in former times I'd been able to lift to about thigh level and carry with some difficulty. This time, after doing Denise Austin's Pilates program for almost a month, I lifted the table (with proper form according to her recommendations) and surprised myself and everyone around me by nearly effortlessly raising it to chest level and moving it to the set, feeling as if the table itself had lost about twenty pounds!

I've also noticed my midsection slimming down (especially the "love handles" that seem to plague men) and firming up nicely. This is a great book for those looking for a solid overall exercise program, and for those who, like me, have neither the time nor the money to go to health clubs featuring expensive Pilates instruction and machines.

The pictures of Denise Austin--a forty-five year old mother of two, looking like a college girl in her early twenties--are instructive for getting the exercises right, and the instructions are easy to understand and complete.

This is a book and program I can recommend highly--I've had a lot of experience in exercise programs, and this is one of the best, well worth the money, time, and effort--and then some. Whether purists of the Pilates method would approve or not, I don't know. I do know this is highly effective as well as fun and (positively) challenging!

This book is a useful supplement to your existing health and
exercise regimen. The focus is concentration, breathing techniques and control. The authors provide pictorial depictions
of abs exercises, HIP opening routines, the buttocks stretch,
warm-ups, the ABS stretch, the leg lift roll-up and leg stretches. This book will help you to develop a comprehensive program in a short period of time. It is worth the money if you are serious about crafting a considerable exercise program as part of the daily routine.

I tried this Pilates tape that is supposedly for everybody. Denise is as full of sunshine as she alwasy ever. It gets irritating fast when you realize that you can't begin to do half the stuff she is talking about. I have done Pilates before so I know that Denise is doing advanced positions that could cause beginners to injure themselves. She doesn't even give alternate or adjustment poses too often.

If you are advanced don't get this Pilates tape you can do better. If you are a beginner, don't get this tape unless you want to hurt yourself.

This book has excellent pictures and is a great book. I have the video tape, Pilates for Every Body which is fantastic, and is a great workout. I was browsing through the book section, and looked through this book. I found the instructions to be thorough and complete. As always Denise has another winner!

Here's another great book to get you going to lose those last difficult ten pounds! Denise's style is so down-to-earth and friendly, that you think that she's coaching you personally. She takes the reader day-by-day through the right exercises, food, and motivation necessary to shed those last 10 pounds in a month. Her recipes are tasty, low-fat, and kid-friendly (my kids love "Denise Chicken"). I've thoroughly enjoyed her other books, and television series, and this one is a very welcome addition to my library.

Denise Austin has written a very clear, step-by-step book for losing the last 10 pounds. I am on Week #2 of her 28-day plan and have lost 5 pounds already. I feel great and know that I have developed muscle as well. Her instructions are quite clear, and she keeps each day interesting by doing different exercises. (I particularly like the toning exercises! ) I have a very sedentary job and now have incorporated her "Fidgetcizers" into my daily routine. Only downside is that some of the recipes contain uncommon foods. I just spent extra time going through the 4 weeks and creating my own meal plans for each day, eliminating those foods I did not like or had no idea what they were!

We started this program 6-10-00 and lost 38 lbs at low point of 3-10-01. As of 12-08-01, I have given back 7 lbs but am still down 31 lbs. This program works.

One positive not mentioned in other reviews is that the the meal plan rationalizes grocery shopping. Prior to this meal plan, my wife spent time figuring out what to prepare and went to the grocery store nearly daily and sometimes more than once in a single day.

With Denise's plan, she does the main shopping once a week. I prepare the grocery list. The grocery list is sorted by aisles in the store, an extra bit of work to make up but more than justified by the overall time saving. There is some time (and likely even monetary) savings in the grocery shopping component of your life with this plan.

Most of the menus require preparation, on the order of 2 hours per day. For example, even a trivial breakfast of strawberrys and yogurt requires washing and cutting up strawberrys. The food is generally good and varied.

It is really the meal plan that has the highest time commitment impact, not the exercises.

My wife came to me and asked me to help her get in shape. Being a workout fanatic most of my life, helping her with the exercise part was easy. But the eating part was tougher. I eat healthy but don't have any set receipes or methodology; so I bought Denise's book and followed it religously for the first three to four weeks, doing all the shopping, cooking etc. She lost more than 12 lbs, looks wonderful and really has liked the food. We still use the book has a guide but mix in receipes from other sources like Cooking Light magazine etc., but we maintain Denise's daily intake of calories (about 1500) and fat -- about 25 percent -- for my wife. Denise is so upbeat, sensible and fun to read and watch. Besides being beautiful, she is full of common sense about eating and exercise. If you want sensible, good food -- not "diet" food, buy this book and follow it. It works. Thanks, Denise. You're the best.

This review is mainly to tell you what the others (teacherwhocares & T.M.) didn't tell you. First off, I thought that this book was very helpful with tring to increase my recipe library and to also increase what I know about Fitness & Nutrition and the basics about exercises. I found this book to be very helpful!

The others that I meantioned earlier (teacherwhocares & T.M.)in this review must have been looking for some negetive things of some sort, or they just wanted to 'pick' on her book for whatever reason.

First off, the shopping list the is in week 1, you WILL use all of the things that are on the grocery list unless you decide to discontinue to use it in the middle of the week.

Second, the typical day that Denise Austin is talking about in the book is HER TYPICAL DAY! Shoot, if everybody was a fitness personality, buiness woman, wife, mother of two, and a avid fitness expert it would look kind of silly for her to just SIT AROUND THE HOUSE AND EAT BON-BONS ALL DAY! She does all those exercises to help give her energy throughout the day and if the person who wrote the review would at least TRY those exercises that Denise recommends then she/he would find them to probably be helpful. I don't exercise for "2 obessive hours a day" and I also do SOME of the 'fidgetsizing' that Denise talks about in her book everyday and it really works!

I think that people who are CLOSED MINDED shouldn't ever think about picking up this book, because that will mean more 'bad reviews' that shouldn't even be here! If you are serious about fitness and nutrition and are flexible enough to try new foods, then this book is worth EVERY PENNY!!!!!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Buy Only One Exercise Book, Make It This One!
Versatile, convenient, informative, and easily understood. These are the four adjectives I would use to descibe this wonderful book. We are all educated people, we know that we need 3-4 days of cardiovascular work (walking, jogging, step aerobics, what have you) at 20-30 minutes a pop to help with fat loss. However, if you are thinking that just cardiovascular exercise will do it, you're wrong. You need to strength train your muscles, and this book is the bible for it. If you want long, lean muscles, buy this book. Having lower back pain? Wait for the pain to subside, get the dr.'s okay, and then buy this book. There are back strengthening exercises in here for all of us Linda-Carter-Wannabees (a.k.a. Wonder Woman) who conquer college, career, marriage and children. You need this book to feel better, look better, and gain that confidence you had when you were 16 in the dance recital. You need this book if you are a beginner, an intermediate exerciser, or an 'ol pro. People have mentioned that this book is detailed....that's an understatement. This book gives you explicit information on breathing during exercises, proper form, and the speed at which to execute the exercises. Yes, it's that good. Just as others have mentioned, Denise Austin's heart is in the right place. However, during her videos (of which I own at least 10), she may do 16 repetitions on the left leg, and then quickly change to the right leg. On the right leg, however, she may only do 12 repetitions! That annoys me, thus, I tend to shy away from the videos these days. However, with the book, YOU control the repetitions. You don't have to pause and rewind...you don't have to wait for cues that won't come, and finally, you don't have to deal with beats and rhythms (Denise has a hard time following those, too). So, on a final note, I give this book the ultimate praise. Run to your nearest book store and purchase it, or buy it right here, right now!

I have been using this book off and on for over 2 years now. I keep going back to this book when I need to lose weight and tone-up. The exercises are easy to follow and can be as challenging or low-intensity as you make it. I have trouble following other exercise books/videos and really recommend this to anyone who wants to lose weight and tone-up different areas of their body. Of course to lose weight you have to add aerobic exercise (fast walking/other) as she stresses in this book. I recommend this book for any age, but I'm 40 and find this book one of the easiest to follow and the best, so far, for me.

I own all the 'Hit the Spot' videos and have used them for years. This book has more or less all of the same great exercises. There is a lot of variety- she gives many variations to work the same muscle so you can pick and choose what you like. She also shows all different levels so you can start with this book as a beginner and still use it at an advanced level.In her videos, Denise often does an imbalanced set between right side and left side. She also tends to jump to the next exercise without any break. With the book I can work at my own pace and do the proper sets. Some complaints: the book doesn't stay open easily. I took the pages apart and put them in report cover sheets and a binder. Also, find out how to stretch all your muscles after you've worked them. This book shows stretches but does not cover stretches for all the muscles you work. This book could advise more about proper breathing and the pace to work at. But just find that out somewhere else and you'll be fine.

This is another book of Denise Austin's that I highly recommend! There are exercises in here that I started doing shortly after I got the book and read it all the way through. The exercises that I did I started noticing results within 3 weeks from the time I first started doing the exercise. I had the increase my resistance from time to time but, the exercises still work to this day! I highly recommened!

I thought this book was great! Delicious receipes that were fast and an easy way to get into a physical routine. This is for beginners though. For those of us who have been working out for sometime, the cardio-section will not offer you what you are looking for, even though you will learn where you should be working out in regards to heart-rate. However, the toning is great for all (Denise only uses 5 lbs. anyway!) and I really like the Minimum Daily Requirement. It usually motivated me to continue into my workout. She also allows a day of rest; something that I really enjoyed as well! Once through the book a couple of times, you may want to get her "Last 10 Pounds" like I'm doing. Good luck and remember "You are worth it!!"

I read a lot of diet books; this book impressed me a little more than most. The diet plan gives you a pretty good outline of how you should be eating and exercising for 21 days. If you are one of those people like me who like to have a plan mapped out for you this might be a book you would like.
The recipes are reasonable and actually worth trying and the exercise plans are sensible. I would recommend this book to someone wanting to improve his or her diet and make healthy eating a habit.

I absolutely LOVE Denise Austin. Her workouts are ones that I actually can't wait to do. I've got some of her daily workouts from Lifetime on Tape. She is just so bubbly and energetic.

Self-confidence is an often-overlooked part of the weight loss scheme. It helps you to keep going knowing you can do it, and then you do. I highly recommend her workouts. Get her books on tape if you can (if she reads them), this is a highly motivational woman and you need this positive reinforcement. Soon you will believe it yourself, you'll know you are worth it, and exercising and eating right won't be a chore.

For the person who whined about all the stuff Denise does to stay in shape...has it ever crossed your tiny little brain...that the television workouts she does, contains commercials...so the taped segment may be 15-20 minutes long at best. In addition to this...perhaps she wishes to continue to challenge herself and build her fitness levels. Are you aware that 15-20 minutes of a taped workout program...are NOT going to be that challenging to a woman who is in the shape denise is in?

Following her program DOES work. And I don't think she's obsessed, this is her career, this is what she does...and if she can do double duty to give her more time to spend with her family and friends I say go for it. Some people are just too critical of others.

I have bought a few books by Denise Austin and I thought this one would be a greta idea, but I didn't really like it. The first portion of the book before you reach the 21 days is great information, but the meal plans did not seem very appetizing to me. This book got me through my first pregnancy and now that I'm in the beginning stages of my second pregnancy, I've already reread it. I was never a "fan" of Denise Austin and never used her workout tapes or watched her on TV, but I became a fan after reading this book. I am planning on buying her pregnancy workout video to compliment the book this time since I enjoyed her book during my first pregnancy. I by no mean am a fitness guru and haven't ever been in fantastic shape, but the excersizes in this book were easy to read and to follow. I enjoyed the recipes and also loved all the other information she throws in about pregnancy. I highly recommend!
