What are the most important things in your life? Do they get as much care, emphasis, and time as you'd like to give them? Far from the traditional "be-more-efficient" time-management book with shortcut techniques, First Things First shows you how to look at your use of time totally differently.Using this book will help you create balance between your personal and professional responsibilities by putting first things first and acting on them. Covey teaches an organizing process that helps you categorize tasks so you focus on what is important, not merely what is urgent. First you divide tasks into these quadrants:

  1. Important and Urgent (crises, deadline-driven projects)
  2. Important, Not Urgent (preparation, prevention, planning, relationships)
  3. Urgent, Not Important (interruptions, many pressing matters)
  4. Not Urgent, Not Important (trivia, time wasters)

Most people spend most of their time in quadrants 1 and 3, while quadrant 2 is where quality happens. "Doing more things faster is no substitute for doing the right things," says Covey. He points you toward the real human needs--"to live, to love, to learn, to leave a legacy"--and how to balance your time to achieve a meaningful life, not just get things done. --Joan Price ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An unexpected life-changer
I have to get a couple of things out of the way right now to make you understand why this book has been so important to me (and could be to you as well). First, I am definitely someone who shuns most self-help tomes--I think most of them are crutches for weak people too lazy to get their acts together or too clueless to embrace a little common sense. Second, my prior experiences with the Covey cult were less than satisfying, as I had a boss (now departed) who talked the Covey talk but did not (I now see) truly walk the walk. This book differs from the _7 Habits_ texts in that it really deals with taking the general Covey concepts ("principle-centered living") and giving them a practical sheen--in this case by applying them to time management. Learning to divide my activities between "urgent" and "important," planning my life around certain "roles" that I have to fill, and composing a "mission statement" (a much more realistic and helpful version of year 2000 New Year's resolutions for me)--these were the concepts that have really helped me organize my life as efficiently as possible (and I was already pretty organized). I highly recommend buying the book and then following up by getting a Franklin Covey planner, where you can take the lessons from the book and start building your time and life around them. I have loaned the book to several friends and students (I teach high school) and all of them have benefitted from it in some way or another. Buying _First Things First_ will be one of the best things you can do for yourself.

And I can't believe I just wrote a positive review of a self-help book. Trust me on how helpful this book can be.

5-0 out of 5 stars I JUST CAN SAY "WHAT A BOOK"
First, let me say that i'm a mexican citizen so please do not be so hard about my english, any way i'll try to do my best. i like to be an honest human being, so about "FIRST THINGS FIRST" it was a gift i got from a friend in San Antonio tx., and even knowing that i have not ended the book yet because my job, in the first chapters i had readed i have found many ideas to increase my succes as well as my productivity in the office, but the most important thing i have found is the real meaning of the word "share" and this is because i'm starting to learn that i do have to have time for my family as well as for my profession i do not know whats going to happen when i finish of read this "CLEVER WAY TO SHARE THE MEANING OF LIFE" but i'm sure that at the end there is only going to be one word to "STEPHEN R. COVEY"............THANKS A LOT ARTURO ARMENTA V.

3-0 out of 5 stars If you've read '7 Habits' you don't need to read this
While the information in this book is still relevant and helpful, it's basically a rehash of much of the information covered in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Some of the ideas about mission statements and priorites are discussed more thoroughly and there is more specific information on time management like handling the "big rocks" in your week, but overall it seemed like a review. If you haven't read '7 Habits,' then it's a very useful approach to time management and setting the priorities in you life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Another great book by Dr. Covey
This book makes a great addition to The 7 Habits. First Things First is as the title indicates a book about time management. But more than that, about people management. It's about social skills and so much more.

Whether you like Covey or not, this book will impact your life. A highly recommended book to succeed in the new millenium.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiritional and practical
USA Today said that Stephen Covey is the hottest self-improvement consultant to hit U.S. business since Dale Carnegie and I agree. Covey is the best.

In First Things First, Covey discloses powerful time management techniques. What makes this book different from typical time management books and programs is that Covey shows you how to see the whole picture rather than tiny fragments of our lives.

Before reading and applying the techniques in First Things First, I would always lament

"I have too much to do---and not enough time to do it."
"I can't balance my personal life with my business life."
"There is too little of me and too much to do."
"I don't feel in controlof my life."
"Why do I feel so empty all the time."

What you won't find in this book is another daytimer program or another clock. Covey explains why it is more important to know where you are heading instead of how fast you are going. You won't find the old theory of working harder, faster, smarter and more, more, more. It's about effectiveness, not efficiency. And most importantly, it really works.

Thank you Dr. Covey! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Tool
Great layout for tracking your healthy (or not) behaviors. Weekly format lets you review at a glance how you are doing. This is particularly nice since consistent behavior is so important. Two pages per week for personal notes with check off boxes for sleep, vigor and mood. One page per week for food records with plenty of room to be specific or just mark number of food group servings in provided boxes. One page per week for physical activity records with a separate place for strengh training and number of steps taken (for pedometer fans).

This journal is a great motivator. I think because it's for 52 weeks (you can start anytime) it lets you really see that your overall daily choices and behaviors are what impact your health the most. That super duper hot fudge sundae isn't going to cancel out all the good choices you are making. Highly recommend! I bought one for my Mom and we are doing it together!

1-0 out of 5 stars A disappointment
I am a fan of Miriam Nelson and the Strong Women books but I returned this book because I thought it was poorly designed. It is organized by week, not by day, and within each week there are different sections for exercise, food, etc. so that you have to switch back and forth between the sections (and pages) to record your different behaviors on a single day. Plus, there are some daily behaviors, e.g., drinking lots of water, which are only noted with one (i.e., a weekly) checkbox--it appears that she wanted to remind you to drink lots of water but didn't have room to include a daily checkbox for it or for other behaviors which should occur daily (e.g., a multivitamin).

It would have been more logical -- and easier to use -- if one could note one's actions and behaviors for a single day on the same page or page spread. (I have since found out that you can do this with Bob Greene's journal, Get With the Program.) On top of that, I saw at least two typos: in the intro section there's a phrase about "difficult people's" routines that was most obviously meant to read "different people's" routines. Why would anyone want to follow a difficult person's health and fitness routine? :) And on at least one of the page footers, it reads "umber" instead of "number."

I did not think that it featured the "essentials" or "highlights" of the Strong Women books (as the promo blurb claims it does). It has a few things here and there, but it's mostly anecdotes from readers whose diverse experiences may not be all that relevant to you. And some of Nelson's tips aren't helpful, e.g., when doing errands, resolve to walk to every destination less than a mile away. How could any busy person do that?

Funny, I came across a Web site that reviewed one of Nelson's later books. I can't remember the title of the book or the Web site, but she thought Nelson was getting sloppy after the first two books, perhaps because she is being asked to churn out at least one book a year.

I couldn't help but think of that review when I finally got a close look at this book.

To each her own of course. The design may work for you, but look carefully at the book before you buy. On the other hand the Strong Women "Stay Slim" and "Stay Young" books are quite good. So is her Web site,

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb motivator and tracker
Despite the strong "women" nomenclature, this book serves equally well for men OR women who want to better their health and improve their wellness. As Miriam Nelson explains in the preface, the best predictor of people becoming more fit (exercise, diet) is whether they keep a journal or not. This structured journal means that in just a few minutes a day you can record the key facts about your program and progress (or lack of it) to keep you on track. HIGHLY recommended! ... Read more

This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Simple Abundance's earnest admonitions to appreciate life, in all its messy imperfect excellence. And the fact that serenity and happiness are each in dreadfully short supply can excuse some of the treacly writing. But Breathnach sometimes lapses into what can only be described as her "Martha Stewart on Prozac" voice, and the results are aggravating to the extreme: "If you've been hesitant to strike up a reciprocal relationship with your guardian angel, don't be." Fans of guardian angels will greet these feel-good essays every morning with the rising sun, a cup of mint tea, and a bluebird chirping on the windowsill, and be happy. Skeptics will prefer their coffee very black. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Daily Dose of Happiness and Insight
This book is a must! It has and is helping me through my soul searching. Ms. Breathnach talks about the common sense in a women's life. It's so simple that you yourself are sometimes blind to the simple pleasures. It's straightforward and enjoyable to read. I sometimes find myself reading a day ahead. I feel it's a big step towards being a better woman/human. She helps you find peace within you. I consider myself a good Christian & this book does not dismiss Christianity. The mix of Christianity and this book have made me more spiritual. I've given this book many times as a gift. I strongly recommend this book to any woman that feels she's missing something in her life.

5-0 out of 5 stars I enjoy habitually expressing my authentic self. Thanks!!!
I am in the process of reading this book. It caught my attention on the Oprah Show, several months ago, so I waited to buy it, to make sure that I wasn't buying on impulse.

This is a great book. As someone who is going through a job change, moving, and breaking free from a shame-based, hateful family, I am reading this book, and experiencing a serenity, through doing things, everyday, simple things, that don't cost much, that add value to my spirit.

I am so excited, everyday to get up and read the day's lessonns, and to discover new joys in my heart.

Others around me are catching on to my authentic self shining through.

I am looking at this book, from this point as something that is helping me to bring out things in me, habits that enhance who I am, that I had given up on, prior to this book.

Thank you so much, Sarah Ban Breathnach.

I look forward to my journey.

5-0 out of 5 stars still solid
Altho the author has exhibited "flaky" behaviour lately, this book remains a daily companion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finding one self and fulfilling a dream
After being in an abusive relationship for ten years, I had feelings of hopelessness. I had no positive outlook about anything and the thought of a 'future' was slim to none in my eyes. I have always wanted to be a writer, but the misery that I was living in kept me from having a clear mind and my thoughts were jumbled and disoriented. In 1997, my parents bought me Simple Abundance. I read it, reread it, and read it again. I followed Sarah's suggestions and participated in all that she suggested with the wonderful inspiring activites she offered in the book. My book was published in May 2003! I have a wonderful marriage with my 'new' husband and am living my life as it is suppose to be. I am living the life God intended me to live. Thanks to Sarah Banbreathnach for sharing her insights and taking the time to write such a wonderful book that has changed a lot of lives for the better.

4-0 out of 5 stars For those with Clutter
I was recommended this book by a therapist. Because of this book, I now live a life of non-clutter. It's amazing how clutter can make you feel miserable, and you don't even know it!

If you're the type of person who has so much "stuff", and would feel incredibly guilty discarding this sutff, you will learn the three questions to ask yourself as whether to keep this item or not--without feeling guilty.

This book also helps you understand how the simplist things in life can make you feel so good.

You'll be glad you read this. ... Read more

Ingeniously disguised as a weight-loss manual, this bestselling guide to preventing--and in some cases, reversing--heart disease through diet, exercise, and soul nourishing comes from renowned cardiologist Dr. Dean Ornish, the first doctor to prove that there are alternatives to surgery for clearing clogged arteries--namely, diet, exercise, and stress management. Citing his own published research findings, Ornish concludes that eating a vegetarian diet with only 10 percent of the total daily calories from fat is the first step to healthier, happier living. The other key elements--moderate exercise, fostering social support, and reconnecting with the self--take more time and care. For these, Ornish offers about 75 pages of encouraging words, again backed by numerous research findings and his personal experiences.

About 250 gourmet recipes from two dozen famous chefs help ease the blow to those who view becoming vegetarian as a dramatic lifestyle change. The good news is, entrées like Polenta Alla Veneziana and Tofu Gumbo will surely tickle the taste buds; the bad news is, the sheer number of ingredients and lengthy prep time required for most recipes could send readers running back to their favorite fast-food joints. Plenty of cooking methods, tips, and food descriptions help demystify the recipes; Ornish also provides a comprehensive nutritional analysis of common foods as well as for each dish. But the great strength of Eat More, Weigh Less is in Ornish's opening sections, where he builds a solid case for curbing fat, tossing out the meat and dairy, and fostering mental and emotional happiness. --Liane Thomas ... 5-0 out of 5 stars It works!
This is a wonderful book. Clear, informative, extremely helpful. It makes it clear that there are really only two ways to lose weight: eat fewer calories and burn more calories. You can eat fewer calories by eating less food, which works for any diet in the short run but not in the long run becaus (surprise!) you feel hungry and deprived. But by eating foods that are less dense in calories-- i.e., less fat-- you can eat the same amount of food and still eat a lot fewer calories, so you can maintain this way of eating.

A lot of people think that the only diet Dr. Ornish recommends is the same one he proved could reverse heart disease, but in this book he offers a spectrum of choices. In other words, to the degree you move in the low fat (and low sugar) direction, then you lose weight without being hungry. And your health gets better in other ways, too.

And most of the recipes are great, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Abundant variety not boring deprivation!
Eat More, Weigh Less will speak directly to all those folks who have been struggling to feel better, achieve a healthful weight and gain more energy while trying to sort through the conflicting, confusing onslaught of dietbook information. Dr. Dean Ornish suggests an eating lifestyle not a diet, based on whole, unprocessed grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes including soy, and nonfat dairy foods that is easy to follow, abundant in variety, and packed with nutrients. The book contains great recipes and cooking tips from nationaly known chefs, that are easy to follow and include nutrient information so that you know exactly what you are eating. While fat is not used in the recipes, wonderful flavor is created from the garlic, herbs, spices and combinations of ingredients. One is able to eat well and feel satisfied without indulging in high fat, high calorie foods, and without feeling deprived or hungry. The only limiting factor to enjoying this type of eating would be one's imagination! This is a wonderful resource for anyone who is pursuing good health, an increased sense of energy and well being, and an expanded repetoire of delicious recipes!

5-0 out of 5 stars Listen to this man
I myself think Dr. Ornish is the greatest. I recently became a vegetarian, sometimes I eat fish, so I guess I am only a semi-vegetarian. Dr. Atkins diet put me in the hospital literally for a week, my cholestrol was sky high, I had no energy and was fat as a pig. I have been following Dr. Ornish plan for 1 month and have already lost 12 pounds and feel great. I have no more migraine headaches, or any of the other ailments that used to bother me. Follow this book and it will help you to.

3-0 out of 5 stars "Eat More, Weigh Less"? Really?
No question about it. Ornish is much better than Atkins. Especially for your heart. But can you really, as Ornish promises, "Eat More, Weigh Less"? The answer is NO. Ornish's "unrestricted calories" promise is irresponsible, deceptive, and most of all unscientific.

As the New York Times and some other places have pointed out, Dr. Ornish is not exactly slim.

Not surprising. Try the Ornish Regimen on an eat-all-you-can basis as I did. And you will gain weight instead of lose weight. As I did. In fact, you can end up fat. Look at all the fat vegetarians in India. And not to mention in the U.S.

If you wish to achieve dramatic weight loss, shed body fat, make it stick for life, and do it in the most healthy way possible, and have a very nice life, then your best bet is The Elixxir Program.

I have lost 45 pounds. And have kept it off for over three years. And it doesn't require you to be veggan. As Ornish does. And it does not prohibit alcohol in moderation. And it does not obsess about restricting fat calories to 10% or less.

Haven't heard of it? That's because it's not a mass diet scheme. It is known only to certain circles in the know. But you can get a copy of The ImmorTalist Manifesto: Stay Young & Save the World" by Elixxir. (Amazon)

Elixxir is known as "the only anti-aging guru who has actually stayed young." (Investor's Business Daily, Marilyn Much, senior reporter) But his program not only retards aging, but also slashes your risk of death from heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

The ImmorTalist Manifesto will tell you about The Elixxir Program on excerpt at the back. And then you can search for and go to Elixxir's website. There you will find info about The Elixxir Program. Get the Executive Memo about The Elixxir Program.

If you prefer not to be strict veggan and teetotaler (no alcohol) for the rest of your life.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beans and Carrots and Tofu, Oh My!
When I first picked up this book I was thrilled. I didn't want a book on some fad diet, but rather one that would help me eat better as I lost a few pounds. Unfortunately, this book represents the extreme opposite of the over-portioned, transfatty'd, fast food causing people so many problems with their health. Hasn't the author heard of moderation? Be warned, the recipes and philosophy of this book is really counter to the eating habits of most people - and you can pretty much give up ever eating out again, most restaurants don't serve the requirements of this plan. I lasted only a few weeks, then I was done with the bland sameness of it all, relenting to a friend's insistence that I try Atkins - success at last! ... Read more

Book Description

As elegant as his bestselling How to Know God and as practical as his phenomenal The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success, this groundbreaking new book from Deepak Chopra contains a dramatic premise: Not only are everyday coincidences meaningful, they actually provide us with glimpses of the field of infinite possibilities that lies at the heart of all things. By gaining access to this wellspring of creation, we can literally rewrite our destinies in any way we wish.

From this realm of pure potential we are connected to everything that exists and everything that is yet to come. “Coincidences” can then be recognized as containing precious clues about particular facets of our lives that require our attention. As you become more aware of coincidences and their meanings, you begin to connect more and more with the underlying field of infinite possibilities. This is when the magic begins. This is when you achieve the spontaneous fulfillment of desire.

At a time when world events may leave us feeling especially insignificant and vulnerable, Deepak Chopra restores our awareness of the awesome powers within us. And through specific principles and exercises he provides the tools with which to create the magnificent, miraculous life that is our birthright.

2-0 out of 5 stars Try Another Book - This One is Flat
I agree (now) with the editorial review, but I had to see for myself, since I am a Chopra fan. Editor said "Although Chopra's theories are expressed in a confusing and repetitive manner, the techniques he advocates may prove interesting to those who enjoy his humanistic, if convoluted, approach to self-help." Yep.

There are better books on the market, including one I just finished from a NDE survivor who educates without the confusion, and theres two chapters on technique that humans can understand! Psychic Gifts in the Christian life by Tiffany Snow. Other books you should look at is the (not kidding) "Idiot" series, which lay a good foundation for several disciplines, like "Meditation for Idiots" or "Psychic Awareness for Idiots," etc. The Power of Coincidence is a bit flat. You expect an author to generate a shift in consciousness, and excitment and method of beneficial change. This book didn't do it. I hope his next one is better. I see him on TV, etc, and I know he's getting better at marketing, but what about the writing? Maybe he's just too busy now for us regular people. Where is the old Chopra I knew? I want him back!

5-0 out of 5 stars ENLIGHTENING!
I purchased this and the "Celestine Prophecy" by James Redfield the same day. Great companions! The "Celestine" is a parable story of the stuff Deepok is speaking about. Each gives you a deeper understanding of the other. I purchased Deepok's on tape and listen to it in my car and the "Celestine" in bookform and therefore am studying both, slowly, together. This was not planned, but, may I say, a coincidence. These were the only two items I picked up in the bookstore that day, one audio and the other in bookform, perfect!

If you are concerned of Deepok's book being too dry, buy the "Celestine" first. If it sparks an interest, then go on to buy Deepok's for a deeper and more complete understanding of the why's, mechanics and science behind coincidences.

5-0 out of 5 stars A PERFECT fit ... for me.
No book is for everyone ... no book can reach every person in the infinite variety of lives we live. But THIS book was precisely what I was looking for when I found it. I've referred to it over and over and over again and it has proven to be of invaluable assistance to me as I've worked to change my life from the inside out.

As I first read the book, and was blown away by how perfectly it filled in the gaps in the picture of life that was forming within me, I also realized "this book isn't for everybody". Read the other reviews and follow your instincts. If it sounds like something that you've been searching for but haven't been able to find ... then I think you'll be delightfully pleased. If it sounds like smoke and mirrors to you, then look for something else. If you're in the mood for an apple, why eat an orange and blame the orange when you're done?

2-0 out of 5 stars I think it's flat too
Wayne Dyer is better(most of his books). Tiffany Snow is better (all of her books). Some of Chopra's earlier works are better. Many books are better than this, this one just repeats most of what we already know, so why bother?

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth reading
A worthy insight into probable meaning of daily happenings. It is absolutely fantastic. Dr. Chopra has done it again. It can change your thinking.........and your life. If you find the book flat (as an earlier reviewer did), all you need to do is actually read the book and you will find the treasure that it is. 5 stars all the way. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally! Something that works!!!!!!!!!!!
I have been on the diet 11 days and lost 9lbs. This is a huge accomplishment for me! I have been trying to lose 25lbs for 7-8 yrs. I've eaten low fat, exercised for hours and deprived myself. NONE of these things worked for me. Dr. Atkins diet feels like it was designed for me. I was raised on rice and potato side dishes. Now I know this is why I always battled with my weight. I check my ketosis status everyday and there isn't a better feeling than seeing that stick turn purple! The first 2 days were torture and my energy level was near 0. However, on the 3rd day I began to feel my energy return. I lost the sluggishness and hunger I often felt in the afternoon when eating carbs.I no longer feel bloated after eating a meal. I look forward to the day when I can start adding some carbs back to my diet, but I will NEVER eat the way I used to again!!! I'm very greatful to have found this book and the answer to my struggle with weight!!! I hope others who have tried every other diet out there will give this a try. IT WORKS!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars 2nd Review: 6 mos after Atkins & comments on other reviews
In my first review I was happy to report losing 20 lbs in two months. Now, at 6 months, I've lost 30 lbs, and feel better than ever. It's been over 20 years since I was this light!

As for the book itself, it is clear, persuasive, easy to follow, easy to use as a reference (looking up answers to specific questions), and it includes helpful extras, such as recipes and a pocket carb-counter.

The diet has always been controversial, but the medical community seems to be turning around to grudging acceptance of the Atkins approach to health. A recent study (not Atkins-sponsored) confirmed that when two control groups dieted using prepared meals from the same source, one using a traditional low-fat approach, the other using Atkins' low-carb approach + 300 additional calories per day, the Atkins group still lost more weight!

Now to the reviews. I've perused the negative reviews, and in most cases they are an attack on their perceptions of the diet itself, not on Atkins book. One reviewer even turned his post into a polemic against obese Americans in general. Silly stuff. Another asked, "Why does a body need to be in a state of ketosis when others have lost weight without doing so?" Obviously, the reviewer did not read Atkins' book--he answers this question--ketosis allows your body to naturally burn fat instead of carbohydrates, resulting in a much more efficient operation, and freeing us to consume fats without fear. Yes, there are other ways to lose fat, but being in ketosis is easier and more efficient.

Bottom-line: If you are looking for a rich, creamy, full-tummy'd approach to weight loss and good health, read the Atkins book for yourself, and give it a try. Most of the naysayers have not read the book, have not given the diet an intelligent try, and some negative posters here are clueless about how hard it is for most of us busy, office-worker types to lose weight.
At the risk of sounding corny, the only you have to lose by trying this diet out is fat and pounds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Only diet I have been able to stick to
I am always hearing people say that any diet works if you stick to it. Considering that many scientists, not just Dr. Atkins, have come to consider overeating as analogous to a drug addiction, how much sense would it make for someone to say "this drug rehab program works as long as people don't use drugs"? I think that part of saying that a diet works is how likely people are to stick to it. If a treatment, whatever it is, has a very high drop-out rate, is it really any good? No, because it suggests that the side effects are too awful. This has been my experience with every other diet I have tried - I starved! I even felt depressed.
I gained about 30 lbs. during college and all along I tried to lose them (even as they piled up). I tried lean cuisine, slimfast, and all other sorts of low-fat diets and only gained weight, not to mention I couldn't stick to them because I craved food all day. Anyone who saw the movie "Supersize Me" will remember that the guy developed an addiction to McDonald's and also got depressed. I'm convinced this has more to do with the carbs than with the fat. I felt the same way on a low-fat diet.
Furthermore, I'm eating healthier than ever. All my calories are coming from foods rich in nutrients: meat, zucchini, eggplant, peppers, berries, nuts, etc. I have even developed a taste for some of these vegetables and even tofu. Three months ago (when I started the diet), I couldn't conceive of not eating rice or potatoes with every meal. Now I just see them as empty calories.
I have never eaten nor felt this great in my life. My food is delicious (even my fiance who is not technically on the diet loves it), and I no longer snack 10 times a day.
How much weight have I lost? About 10 lbs, meaning I have reached my healthy weight (I was very skinny when I started college). Most importantly, I lost this weight early on and have not put it back.

5-0 out of 5 stars Buy this book if you seriously need and want to lose weight
My Doctor asked me if I had tried Atkins when I complained about the incredible frustration I had trying to lose weight while I just got bigger and bigger. I bought it. I read it (4 times now). I've lost 54lbs and have kept it off for over a year so far. I will lose another 20-30. No I don't "hope" I can. No I'm not "trying" to. I will. I now have control of my eating for the first time in my living memory. I eat healthier than I ever have in my life. Your choice but for me this has been the most beneficial book for my health physically and mentally that I have ever read plain and simple.

2-0 out of 5 stars yet another diet book
America, when are you going to stop spending money on fad diet books and magazines? The same simple way to stay healthy has been with us since the paleolithic era, and always will be: eat all things in moderation and get some excercise. That has been the only proven formula to stay at a reasonable weight since time began. Atkins, the current flavor of the year, is popular because some people believe, fairly or not, that you can lose weight simply by cutting carbs and they forget that we all need a bit of excercise. (Have you ever noticed how a lot of these health gurus drop dead at age 50?) So, stop reading stupid books and go take a walk around the block. You know enough not to stuff yourself at McDonald's, just eat less and exercise more, for heaven's sake. Surprise! You'll lose weight! ... Read more

Book Description

"Anger is a signal and one worth listening to," writes Dr. Harriet Lerner, in her renowned classic that has transformed the lives of millions of readers. While anger deserves our attention and respect, women still learn to silence our anger, to deny it entirely, or to vent it in a way that leaves us feeling helpless and powerless. In this engaging and eminently wise book, Dr. Lerner teaches women to identify the true sources of our anger and to use anger as a powerful vehicle for creating lasting change.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dance of Anger
The Dance of Anger literally changed my life. I was in a heath crisis & self-evaluation when I was given this book & it was like God & my friend had meant for me to be saved by this book. I was feeling so angry & out of control with my parents, my spouse, & feeling distant from my children. This book made me see that many things that I was angry & frustrated about were of my making & not someone else creating the situation. I was literally transformed by Dr Lerner's insightful writings. It truly was an life changing read. I saw myself in so many situations that she wrote about. This book truly changed my life. I read her other books too & was helped so much by all of them...but this book was the key to me being a happier, emotionally healthy & loving person. It is a true gift to women who want a better relationship with the important people of their lives. I can't recommend this book highly enough to all! It is a true gift from Dr Lerner to women everywhere!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A life-changing approach
Think that you don't have an anger problem because you usually keep your temper bottled and just stew and feel resentful? Think again! Feel frustrated and angry at the people around you who, no matter how much you plead, won't change and start behaving the way you want? Here's a solution.

Dr. Harriet Lerner's "The Dance of Anger" provides a whole new approach for women who feel stuck and powerless. Using case studies, Lerner demonstrates ways that women can change their reactions when other people's behavior and expectations upsets them. Her basic premise: You can't change how others treat you--you can only change how you respond. Throughout the book, Lerner provides examples of how women can set boundaries with friends, family members and others so that they can break out of unsatisfying relationship patterns.

The "Thinking in Threes" chapter addresses ways that third parties get pulled into conflicts, and how to better handle these situations by focusing on the source of the conflict.

Lerner's book is an excellent source for learning a "new dance"--a new way of approaching life. One caveat: I question whether this approach would be safe or appropriate for someone dealing with domestic violence or an emotionally abusive relationship. While several experts in that area have said that the reason people abuse is because it works, making the abuse no longer work by using Lerner's approach of changing one's reaction to that behavior could make the abuse escalate. From the training I've received in domestic violence (I'm not a therapist but I do have some professional training in this area), I believe that the most dangerous time for someone in an abusive relationship occurs when she tries to get out of that relationship. Changing one's response to abusive behavior under Lerner's recommendations might make the situation more dangerous.

5-0 out of 5 stars Patterns is the key word
This book is wonderful. It would be helpful to anyone - men and women alike when have just about any type of relationship problem. She is great about explaining that our relationships - when they are not at an optimal level get stuck in a pattern. Like an overfunctioning parent results in an underfunctioning child...hit home on that one. It isn't an anger management book, really - more that when you feel some anxiety in a relationship - it can be due to anger but more importantly a bad pattern of behavior. Even better, she gives examples of how to begin to "break" the pattern - or how she says "Dance" - you move differently and the dance changes! Great book - helpful for work issues, marital issues, and child rearing. Notes that unresolved issues with first family replay themselves in the family we make for ourself. You will not regret reading this book - written in such a way that is easy to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life
This book had a significant impact on who I am today: a more self confident person who understands that the only person truly in control of my life is: ME!

I love the examples of how to handle conflict situations, as for those of us who grew up without a good example, knowing that we don't deal with situations appropriately is not so helpful if we don't get clues on how to improve.

A friend recommended the book and I have given it to friends since. Read this book if you are not afraid of change, as change is required. Change to be a happier person.

I have read a lot of psychology books, this one is right to the point and spoke my language. It gave me hope and the tools to make my life better.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is changing my life
I had already read "The Anger Habit," and I thought that book changed my life completely. I might have stopped there, having learned so much and been so much more at peace. I'm glad I didn't. "The Dance of Anger" is along completely different lines, but it still has taught me invaluable lessons. Mostly, I am learning what is my responsibility and what is not. I think I had things completely backward, as so many of us do. My whole attitude and perspective have changed. My husband is impressed with the changes in me and says he will read this book after he finishes "The Anger Habit." I consider this book a gift in my life, and I highly recommend it to anyone. ... Marilu Henner, known as Elaine on TV's Taxi and star of the musical Chicago, was once very overweight, with sallow skin and a weak immune system. She waffled between starving herself and gorging herself.Since cutting dairy products and caffeine out of her diet, adopting a food-combining plan, and following a program that's code-named "BEST"--for balance, energy, stamina, and toxin-free--she's shaved nearly 100 points off her cholesterol count and 50 pounds off her frame, and she looks younger at 45 than she did at 19. If you don't count her pregnancies, her weight hasn't changed by more than 5 pounds over the past 11 years.

Henner's 10-step health program outlined here is strict, but she offers tips for getting your feet wet. Start by cutting out caffeine one day a week, she advises, instead of going cold turkey, and make just one meal each day dairy-free, so the change doesn't come as a shock to your system. Her "anti-milk manifesto," which reveals exactly how milk is produced and how it negatively affects the human body, is quite a stunner. Her plan offers sound advice for becoming more mindful of how you treat your body, how and what you eat and why, and how you react to stress, along with how to make improvements in all these areas. Henner's especially trustworthy because she's been through the wringer: "After nineteen years of experimenting, a thousand mistakes, over 400 books (read, not written), at least 200 bad diets over my lifetime, five doctors, two physical therapists, three nutritionists, two personal trainers, one therapist, and a partridge in a pear tree, I have found what I believe are the best answers this planet has to offer about living a healthy, happy, and balanced life." And she holds nothing back as she passes on her hard-earned knowledge about nutrition, digestion, exercise, preventive medicine, detoxification, and stress reduction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book But Have Problem with Planning a Quick Lunch
Hi, I've changed my lifestyle since I read this book and have lost 10 pds or so (not exactly sure since I've only weighed myself a few times since). I've also dropped a couple of inches but I think that's from exercising. Anyway, I do find that I have less mood swings on this plan, but I have a major problem with lunch. Lunch is my biggest problem because I want quick food I can eat at work and it's so easy to bring in a turkey sandwich or 3 minute soup. I think Marilu should include ideas for planning a quick lunch for at work that meets her guidelines and something that wouldn't require cooking. The combining part is hard for me also because of relatives sometimes. They don't get it. I agree with what others have said about having recipes included in the book. I believe in the book but it is very difficult to follow consistently for a long time. My mind has been opened to the fact that I need to learn more about alternative foods and cooking though...but I do need to do it affordably. Having a strict diet and a strict budget doesn't exactly work.

5-0 out of 5 stars A radical yet inspirational approach to overall health.
I bought this book after seeing Marilu Henner talking about her program on a few talk shows. I never expected it to be as densely filled with information as it is. Although implementing her entire program entails some radical steps, she talks about ways to incorporate bite-size steps to begin moving toward a healthier way of life. She emphasizes balanced foods (ying and yang), no dairy, chemicals, or sugar, and food combining. It all sounds a little "out there" but I decided to try it anyway, and I feel great. I've lost a little weight, and I haven't had my usual stomach aches after eating. I highly recommend this book. Even if you don't follow all the steps, it's full of valuable info that you don't find everywhere. Not only is the book informational, it's inspiring, motivational, and funny. Marilu Henner has really educated herself, and she'll educate you, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Make a Life-time change!
Apparently after years of fluctuating weight, diets, doctors, therapists, nutritionists, etc., etc., Marilu Henner of "Taxi" fame has compiled a book with an approach to bring health and vitality to a new level and to add years to your life. She intends to get you to rid your old lifestyle habits.

CONVERSATIONAL TONE, HUMOROUS - This book is written in a very casual conversational tone. Included are pictures of herself during various stages of her life. It is like she is addressing you personally because the books lacks the hard core technical mumble jumble that most health books contain. Healthy recipes offering colorful pictures fill many pages.

You can follow much of the requirements such as reexamining your relationship with food, your lifestyle and your health. However, when I read about "food combining" I was taken aback! It isn't easy making drastic changes, but when she tells you too watch what foods you combine, I find this just another difficult step that seems quite a challenge. Food combining is when protein and starches are eaten together, it takes too much energy to digest that meal. This is explained thoroughly. Probably one of the most challenging conquests to better living.

THE COMPLETE SCOOP ON OUR POOP! Henner discusses the digestive process and its disorders, everything you ever wanted to know about poop - but were too embarrassed to ask! Everything is here, from consistency, color, how often, how much, etc.

TEN STEP PROGRAM - The book is laid out to cover Ten Steps to a complete makeover - One Step at A Time starting at a beginner level (easing gradually into changes) to makeover maniac.
1. Chemicals - all about reading ingredients.
2. Caffeine Cutting down on caffeine
3. Sugar - actually working toward eliminating everything sweet
4. Meat - that dreaded meat again!
5. Dairy - Giving up dairy products
6. Food Combining - Oh boy, this isn't going to be easy!
7. Fat - Can't ever leave fat discussions out of healthy lifestyle change
8. Exercise and Stress - Walk, jog, strengthen!
9. Sleep - Notice your sleep pattern
10. Gusto - Just plain gusto!

If you can follow this plan, faithfully, you may just live to be 120 years old. ........MzRizz.

5-0 out of 5 stars Will change your life--if you are ready
The reason I like this book so much is that it is about getting healthy--not getting thin. You may not agree with everything she says, but if you are willing to try some of the steps, you will feel and look better than you ever have in your life. The weight loss follows the healthy living. The book itself could be written a little better, but she seems to have done her homework. Don't try to do all the steps at once, this is about making over your life, which of course does not happen overnight. This is a refreshing break from the high protein, low carb fad.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must read!
Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover changed my life! Marilu put into writing ideas that I had floating around in my mind and made sense of them. Like, why am I eating high fat and lots of red meat on the Atkins diet and trying to fool myself into thinking that it won't effect my health later? And is a pound of fat lost today worth a pound of diseased flesh later in life?

Marilu showed me how to lose weight in an easy, fun, healthy manner. She introduced me to some new ideas about how my digestive system works, and why calves can digest cows milk but I cannot. If only I had known this as a child, it would have saved me years of discomfort. She talks about smart carbs, and how they're good for us - yeah, I love my carbs! And fruit - what a natural cleansing way to start the day, I got my fruit again!

After I read her book I logged onto her Message Boards at and was amazed at the support I found there. And then I discovered her 30-day Total Health Makeover, packed full or recipes and menus for a whole 30 days to show us just how easy it is to eat this way.

I LOVE the Total Health Makeover and it truly has changed my life! I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to lose weight - or just get healthy! ... Read more

Book Description

Create Powerful Changes in Your Life, with the Energy of Your Own Self-Esteem

What is self-esteem? A type of confidence? Or something far greater? On Self-Esteem, Caroline Myss casts a new light on this often misunderstood subject, redefining self-esteem as an actual "core power" that is essential to our evolutionary progress. In fact, Myss teaches, your potential for success in life is determined by how greatly you "esteem" or value who you truly are. Beginning with a look at its roots in childhood, and branching into the real world of daily experience – including finances, relationships, and spirituality – Myss illustrates the incredible changes that come when we nourish this life-giving force. Building on her revolutionary bestsellers Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts, Myss explores:

• How your strong self-esteem threatens other people – and why you must strengthen it anyway
• How your intuition, spiritual guidance, self-healing capacity, and your self-esteem all depend on each other
• PLUS special guided exercises for cultivating healthy, vibrant self-esteem, available only on this audio session, and much more

"How would your life change if your self-esteem improved?" Myss asks. Now you can find out, with this "energetic template" for radiating the quiet power of your own Self-Esteem. ... Read more

I have been in the practice of personal development for 20 years and this CD is one of the most powerful contributions on the nature of "self", conscious, and fulfilling ones destiny and place in the world, that I have encountered in a long time. 5-0 out of 5 stars Empowering
If you are familiar with Caroline's work and have enjoyed it then I can say you will enjoy Self Esteem and find this well grounded, well rounded, sensible and wholistic approach to Self Esteem to be of real value. There are so many of us (including those actively on their spiritual path) who suffer from the effects of poor self-esteem. Much of information we come across on the spiritual path (the path to wholeness) evens sets people up to have or maintain a low self-esteem. Our self-esteem equates to our willingness to BE HERE and to participate in life fully, lovingly, with power and presence, and in service to the Big Picture. With poor self esteem this is a formidable task that we are bound to sabotage time and time again.

For those that are not familiar with Caroline's work... well, this is as good a place to start as any. I know you will find many treasures in this work of hers that you will treasure for years to come. 5-0 out of 5 stars Are you willing to change the rules?
"You change the rules or you are going under." ~Caroline Myss

Imagine a life where no one can intimidate you, where you have an invisible sense of knowing who you are, a life where you are no longer fighting for the right to be alive.

Are you willing to change the rules? Are you playing games with people in your life who do not have your best interests at heart? Are you afraid of what you want most? Do you want to know who you really are? Do you want to feel empowered and healed spiritually? Do relationships make you feel needy?

One of the most beautiful spiritual gifts anyone has given me was introducing me to the Caroline Myss Self-Esteem CDs.

You will learn the details of why:

1. People with healthy self-esteem heal faster.
2. The old view of self-esteem differs from the new view.
3. Wars are started due to lack of self-esteem.
4. Meditation is not the only answer.
5. People around you won't celebrate your empowerment.
6. Knowledge is not a spiritual practice.
7. Standing up for yourself can change your entire life.
8. We destroy others to compensate for our own fears.
9. Our greatest fears are being alone and abandoned and how we smother people.

Caroline's teachings are healing, beautiful gifts for your soul. Heal your life, heal your friendships, start giving love instead of always asking for love.

An Empowering, healing, spiritually electrifying journey. If you want to be primarily responsible for your spiritual growth and understand how to create the empowered self, these CDs will help you in your search for understanding self-esteem on the spiritual level.

I have listened to my 4 CD set about 5 times since I bought it. It is terrific. Any fans of the Advanced Energetic Anatomy CD's, Anatomy of the Spirit CD's, Spiritual Power - Spiritual Practice CD's will love this - they will not be disappointed. 5-0 out of 5 stars Finally on the 3rd floor...
I actually SAW Iyanla while she was promoting this book. I cried through the entire lecture because I felt like she was talking to ME...that was 3 years ago. I am now DIVORCED and away from the relationships and ways that kept me in the "basement". I recently bought the audio CD for a friend and listened to it twice...only to realize that I went through every single phase of what she discusses in her book and I've seen the light. Loving yourself is the real message here. I'm so glad that I bought the CD that I'd like to give a copy to all my friends. If you are in need of a spiritual awakening, get this book. Better yet, buy the CD because it's as if she's talking directly to you - it only takes 2 hours of your time and it's well worth the time. I only wish I had the CD and book handy about a year ago while I was in the thick of my divorce. Trust in yourself. Trust in love. Trust in GOD. BUY THIS BOOK.

2-0 out of 5 stars In the Meantime
This book started out good and really made sense and was positive but eventually, it got a little "out there". For instance, when she was giving an example of a couple who had a long-term relationship and one of them wasn't sure about how he felt and wanted to see other people, her advise was that the person who knew for sure about how he/she felt about the relationship should trust the other enough to let him/her do whatever they need to do to find out, as long as they stay together and supposedly, that's building love and trust. To me, it's saying, "I'm a doormat...walk on me." or can we say the word CODEPENDENT tendencies? BEEN THERE, DONE THAT!! And thank goodness, I'm far into my codependent recovery so as to recognize this; therefore, not buying into it. In the end, I just took what I could use from the book and left the rest but there was a lot left.

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking Inside you.
Ms. Vanzant allows you to keep your mind open to new avenues on how to relief the emptiness we feel do to hurt and pain from a bad relationship. Each story and experience she gave was an insight as to how we experience a fall on our ego and self respect, and how to learn how to live for you and not everyone else in life. It is a great self healing book. Through her own personal experiences she gives reasons to look within your own life as to what we have lost within ourselves. She helps you view what is out there for us to move on and get to the top in being happy with ourselves and not living through having someone else be your happiness, but finding it within you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great information, but it is there anything new here?
The message of this book could be summarized as "Relaxation is good for your health. You can relax by 1)Finding a quiet place 2) Sitting in a comfortable position/posture that will keep you alert but won't lead you to sleep 3) choosing a mental device that will let you concentrate 4) maintaining a passive attitude during this period". The rest of this book goes into the health dangers of stress (as understood in 1975),the health benefits of relaxation and how it differs from sleep, different ways to evoke the relaxation response, and how the relaxation response has been evoked throughout history in the context of various cultures and religions. I think this book is of great historical interest because it was one of the first attempts to expose the dangers of stress in a clear way (I found his discussion on how high blood pressure leads to heart disease particularly illustrating) and gave scientific validity to age-old ways of treating it without involving the methods traditionally sanctioned by Western medicine such as surgery and high-priced pills. His findings are based on research he performed with Transcendental Meditation followers, so he spends much effort on qualifying his conclusions, adding disclaimers, and otherwise protecting himself from possible attacks because of his work with such a fringe group. I think this limits the practical usefulness of the book and makes it somewhat dated, particularly since no one today questions that stress is bad and relaxation good. I think a more appropriate revision of this book should include not just a new introduction by the author, but also references to current research on which meditation techniques or approaches bring the most tangible health benefits and how they differ from placebos. A new assesment on the advantages of modern medicine vs. alternative therapies for preventing heart disease would also be in place. By being properly updated, a book of this nature would be very influential in setting a balance between the new age crowd that has little regard for science in medicine, and the medical establishment that has a vested interest in the status quo and thus rejects alternative medicine as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woo Hoo!
This is worth the money to own -- it's so, so worth it... I did another review once for a somewhat similar book -- "The Quiet Mind," by White Eagle. That is a more explicitly "spiritual" book than this one, full of little aphoristic sayings that often refer to God, or "the light"... I still like that book, but I wanted to speak up in favor of this approach to having a quiet mind, also. "The Relaxation Response" is really quite short and to-the-point, and has a fundamentally Western, rational, scientific feel to it. The end goal is very similar to White Eagle's book, however. Herbert Benson helps us to know the value of taking just ten or fifteen minutes each day to breathe, to say your private mantra over and over, and to simply Be... I think a lot of people out there have some pretty flaky mental associations with the word "mantra." People immediately think of the Beatles saying "heavy, man" and binging in a huge way on LSD-laced mandarin oranges, or some similar image. Benson shows that meditation need not be like this. A mantra could be basically any simple, calming phrase -- anything that doesn't provoke fitful spasms of hysterical laughter is probably fine.

One example of a poor choice of a mantra would be "get... get... get... out... out... out..." like hockey mask-wearing Jason in the "Friday the Thirteenth" movies. A better one might be something calming, such as "decaf for me, please... decaf for me, please... decaf for me, please..." or, better still, the name of a beloved childhood pet. That's what I use, the name of the dog we owned when I was a kid, and it works for me. You can use a pleasant-sounding nonsense word if you want, also. Furthermore, it isn't necessary to be given a mantra in a personalized, ritualistic fashion by a personal guru, like many TM practioners used to advocate in the 70s. It's okay to pick your own, whatever works for you, a lot of those gurus were just a bunch of frauds.

This book is worth owning, for the further calming effect of being able to view the author's helpfully compiled graphs, and his discussions of the experimental sessions that led to his understanding of the essence of meditation. What he is basically going to tell you to do, however, is simply to take a few minutes a day to sit comfortably, breathe in and out, chant quietly, and try to let your mind empty itself out. Emptying the mind of extraneous thoughts is not meant to feel like wringing water out of a wet washcloth, either -- it should feel like leaving the washcloth hanging loosely over a clothesline, and letting the water, the thoughts, drip to the ground below of their own, unhurried accord, for just fifteen tranquil minutes a day. I wish I had discovered this book years ago. Two mellow thumbs up -- check this one out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Golly Miss Molly!!
This book will teach you a simple technique you can do anywhere that puts your body in a state of relaxation. The best part? It is very well researched and documented and really works! I give it 5 stars easy. Other self-help books I liked include "Treat Your Own Knees."

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT information and practical guide to the exercise!
Top notch book on producing a meditative state, called here the relaxation response. Good information also about various traditions of producing the relaxation response. For arguably the best book on reducing stress and improving relaxation (and actually a lot more too) check out EFFORTLESS WELLBEING by Evan Finer. Amazing would be an understatement for that book. The Relaxation Response is a classic and should be read if you have not. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! CLASSIC!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Relaxation Response
Prior to becoming a Christian I practiced a form of Eastern meditation. Even though my Christian faith meant very much to me, I missed the ongoing peace and calm I received from meditation. I could not seem to incorporate the benefits of my Bible study and prayer time into my daily life. About a month ago I read the Beyond the Relaxation Response. I decided to try Dr. Benson's simple technique which is based on the same principles of Eastern meditation. Instead of using a mantra I used a term from the Bible. Immediately I felt like I was right back were I left off years ago. I have now come full circle, adding the Relaxation Response to my Christian faith. As an RN and a lay counselor I see many possibilities for using this technique to bring relaxation and relieve stress. As a Christian I believe this is a technique to help incorporate our prayer time experience with God into our daily lives. ... Read more

The Pregnancy Book is an excellent all-in-one guide to pregnancy from William and Martha Sears, creators of the concept of "attachment parenting." Each of the book's chapters represents a month, and deals with physical and emotional changes, describes the growth of the fetus, and discusses common concerns. The authors also focus on nutrition, exercise, information and support for home births and birthing centers, traveling while pregnant, how to avoid episiotomy, and so on. The approach is gentle, thorough, and includes more information than some month-by-month guides, which makes The Pregnancy Book an excellent choice for pregnant couples. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource; great information!
I found The Pregnancy Book when I was six months pregnant for the fourth time. Having been through the experience three times already, I had read many books on the subject and had a pretty good idea of what to expect. The Pregnancy Book was by far the best book on the subject that I read. It is full of useful information that can be used on a day to day basis during your pregnancy. I was able to find an answer to every question I could think of - Why do I have headaches? What causes my ankles to swell? What does the baby look like and do at three months? six months? eight? What I found to be the most useful was the detailed description of what happens inside of me during the delivery of the baby. After reading the section on labor and delivery, I had a much better understanding of how my body works with the baby during the delivery process. I was able to use some of the techniques described in the book during my own delivery and it made the delivery of my nine and a half pound son much easier. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to know more about the whole process - whether this is your first time or fourth. I also recommend We're Pregnant! for a couple's viewpoint on the whole pregnancy and delivery proces, and A Child Is Born for great pictures of the developing baby.

5-0 out of 5 stars A positive approach to pregnancy!
Throw away or return "What to Expect When You're Expecting!" "What to Expect When You're Expecting", provides information on what to expect during your appointment and then goes on to tell you all the NEGATIVE things that can happen during your pregnancy. It really doesn't provide much information on what is happening (or what to expect for that matter) with your body during each month and what is happening with baby. Leg cramps in the 7th month and what to do about them? Buy The Pregnancy book and you'll find the answer!

The Pregnancy Book provides comprehensive information on questions to ask a potential OB/GYN, GP, and/or Midwife. The detailed descriptions of what is happening with your body during each month and potential "side affects" are invaluable, as well as the information on baby's development. The detailed birthing options are comprehensive and I believe, unbiased. The ninth month covers quite a bit of information on labor and delivery, but I do recommend The Birth Book as a detailed companion to The Pregnancy Book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A good, general guide to pregnancy
I thought this was a great book to start off with. Dr. Sears and his wife lay out the general information in an easy to read format. While this is not the only book in my prego-library, I do find myself going back to it over and again. I don't think there's one be all end all book. Yes, there is a lot of repetition in the various Sears' books but each seems to build upon the others.

3-0 out of 5 stars great for an uneventful pregnancy, but...
As long as your pregnancy is progresses "normally," and you are able to birth "naturally," this book probably provides adequate information for you. However, it does not deal very extensively with the many complications that come up during pregnancy, and does not deal much with birth defects and fetal problems, other than to assure you that such things are very uncommon and therefore you shouldn't worry. I have had a very difficult pregnancy, and more than a few times the condition or complication I was experiencing wasn't even mentioned in the book, not even in the appendix.

Also, Dr. Sears insists on using gestational age dates, which is not how most doctors date pregnancies, and I was always reading about something that was supposed to happen at, say, 19 weeks, and having to add and subtract weeks to figure out how it pertained to me. That was irritating.

I liked the reassuring tone of the book, and I liked the flexible, commonsense approach to nutrition and weigh gain, which was a pleasant change from What To Expect (Yikes! That Best-Odds Diet is for superwomen.)

All in all, it is an okay book, and probably fine for women with uneventful pregnancies, but there are better and more comprehensive books out there if you want more detailed and objective information on tests and problems.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great if you go natural
I bought this book because "What to Expect" was out of stock. This book takes you through your pregnancy in an easy to follow month by month format. The authors of the book also include some stories of their pregnancy's as well as those of others. There is also a glossary that explains briefly some complications and conditions of pregnancy. I, however, feel that this book pushes the message that birth should be unmedicated unless medically necessary. They feel that pain relief should only be given in extreme cases like c-sections and to help a slow labor progress.

There is a section covering cesareans but it isn't too detailed on what to expect and they really only give medical reasons for needing one. They even feel that if a breech baby can be delivered naturally that it should be done. It seems that they don't really consider the health and well-being of the unborn baby. Inductions aren't really talked about either. The only spot I remember them being discussed is if your labor is progressing very slowly or if it has been over 24 hrs since the water has been broken.

This book also covers the overlooked issues such as environmental factors that affect pregnancy, pregnancy at an older age, special tests that may be needed, and whether or not to go through genetic counseling. They also cover miscarriages and how to cope and how to decide when to start trying again.

All in all if you have a normal healthy pregnancy that is progressing well and you plan to have an unmedicated birth this book will guide you along nicely. However, if you are facing a cesarean, have a high risk pregnancy, or carrying multiples I would recommend you find another book. Also if you are looking for a book to cover both pregnancy and child birth either buy, "The Birth Book", or get another book altogether. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars The most frustrating cookbook ever written.
I was looking forward to using this book to get started on the Fat Flush Plan. Unfortunately, I now need to buy another book entitled "The Fat Flush Plan" to actually get the plan. My mistake. This book is supposed to be a cookbook filled with receipts that conform to the Fat Flush continuing program.

The problem is that, while the receipts may or may not be any good (see review from May 30, 2003), the book cannot be used for reference, as say, OTHER COOKBOOKS! Want to look up a recipe the sour cream substitute? You won't be able to find it in the index or table of contents. Want the author's recipe for yogurt dip? Good luck -- there are no listings for yogurt in the index AT ALL! How about a recipe involving nuts? You guessed it, NOTHING!

The recipes are complex and time consuming. For example, if a recipe calls for catsup, it means Fat Flush catsup you made from scratch. But if you need to whip some up in a hurry, you're out of luck. There is no listing for catsup in the index. You need to go through the entire book -- page by page -- until you find it. (I'm not joking!)

Also see review from May 30, 2003.

5-0 out of 5 stars Even with the negatives still deserves five stars ....
OK ... at the price of being whiney there are a few things that bug me starting with the name of the program or book ... The Fat Flush Cookbook ... gimme a break the toilet imagry was probably an in your face decision by the author .. Certainy sections of the book that practically describe what a knife or a wooden spoon is are over the top, trust me I don't think that this book is meant for people that are not wholly and totally comfortable in the kitchen ... the fact that as a cookbook there are no pictures to show meal presentation is a total bummer for me that's for sure ...

OK so this is not the kind of book that you want to read from cover to cover as the plot thickens, or should I say the sauce thickens .... but ... there are sections that make it worth the price alone ...

First .. chapter one and two that expalin the concept and process of the diet is very good and if you tie it in with your general knowledge of outher diet plans such of the 'Sugar Busters Diet' it is excellent ...

Then chapetr 3 is filler telling you that you'll need spoons and pots to be able to cook

Chapter four is absolutely fabulous since it describes the impotance and historically forgotten banefits of most of the important herbs and spices in your kitchen... I have a copy of that section right beside my spice rack as we speak ...

Lastly, the recepies, the reader should be very discerning and pick the one's that would be appealing and necesary... How to make sugar free catsup is super ... hot chocolate and even dishes using cardamon seeds are great ...

The book is a little pricy if you only buy it and put it on the shelf for some future project, but if you have the time and inclination to pick out what you want, well, then it's well worth it ....

5-0 out of 5 stars Get the Cookbook!
The Fat Flush Cookbook is an excellent companion to the Fat Flush Diet. Anyone who complains that Fat Flush food is bland or boring will be surprised by these tasty dishes that even your whole family will love. My husband especially liked Tangy Chicken with Tomatillos. There are spice mixes to perk up your food. Especially nice is the section on "meal in one" dishes and easy-packed lunches. There's even two pages of speedy no-recipe snacks.

1-0 out of 5 stars Does anyone edit books anymore?
Having tried the Fat Flush Plan successfully, I was excited to buy the Fat Flush Cookbook. What a disappointment! The chapters that describe the plan are not coherent, and the information contradicts and repeats itself. In several places, Gittelman refers you to Chapter 14 for information on tools and resources. However, Chapter 14 (with a different title than the references) includes none of the tools and seems to be a sales description for the company selling her vitamin package. Also the recipes need editing to confirm the right ingredients are listed and to make sure the recipe correctly describes what to do with ALL of the ingredients.

Some recipes are good, such as the mashed potates substitutes from cauliflower and some quick soups. However, I already had those recipes from another book and the web site. The new recipes I tried were a waste of time and tasted awful. Two cloves of garlic in 4 salmon cakes certainly eliminates the fish taste! The recipe for marinated shrimp involves lots of chopped vegetables for a marinade that you apparently throw away. I can get the same taste with the herbs in a crab boil mix and save an hour. And the recipe for "carrots and snow peas with parsley" is described at the top as being a great basil-flavored vegetable.

This book was obviously written in a hurry to hit the market while interest in the Fat Flush Plan is peaking.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Diet + The Cookbook = Real Weightloss!
I started the Fat Flush Diet Plan less than 30 days ago and am happy to report a weight loss of 27lbs. in that short time frame! This cookbook is essential if you wish to follow the Fat Flush Plan! This diet is not totally easy if you really value the addition of salt or butter, but really effective! Flax oil is a primary ingredient and I believe it does promote weight loss in addition to many other health benefits, but it is not at all tasty, in my opinion. Try the mock mashed potatoes, using a cauliflower puree and several of the breakfast suggestions (eggs are vital to success), plus the smoothie recipes and you will lose weight and (most importantly, inches) in a short period of time! This book contains many delicious and health smart recipes, using ingredients you may previously have discounted, and the diet plan works. After a month on the plan, I craved salt on my entrees more than anything else, but I did lose a great deal of weight and inches and truly recommend the diet plan and cookbook to anyone committed to real weight loss and helpful insights to healthy eating. ... Fitness guru Denise Austin helps you "zero in on your personal trouble spots" while increasing metabolism with this 6-week exercise and eating program. Her formula includes toning workouts that target the waist, thighs, abs, buttocks, hip, lower back, and upper arms; regular walking and stretching; and eating strategies (not dieting). Her tips are refreshingly sensible: Avoid chronic dieting (it hurts your health and makes you fatter), stretch to decrease stress, fill up on high-fiber foods, eat a balanced diet, build muscle to increase calorie-burning, and walk almost every day. Austin's clearly illustrated and varied exercises use body weight, dumbbells, resistance bands, or a stability ball. A sample exercise schedule takes 15 to 60 minutes a day. For especially busy days, she offers a series of exercises that work two or more muscle groups at once.Austin's "Shrink-Fat Eating Plan" emphasizes portion control, 1,400 to 1,800 calories, and a nutritional breakdown of 24 percent "good" fat, 20 percent protein, and 56 percent high-quality carbs. Whether you just want a foundation to get started or you need a structured, daily program (including menu plans, shopping lists, and daily logs), you can find it here. Profiles of happy and successful followers of the program add interest. Highly recommended. --Joan Price

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for New Moms
I'm 5'4" and have always weighed 115-120 lbs. After giving birth to my daughter, I weighed 147 pounds. I didn't exercise during my pregnancy, and I didn't start trying to re-gain my pre-pregnancy figure until after my 6-week postpartum check-up. The first time I went to the gym, I came home crying, because I was very much out of shape, and unable to accomplish anything on familiar weight machines. Instead of heading back to the gym, I ordered this book, and now I'm back down to 115 lbs. My friends and family keep telling me how great I look for someone who just had a baby three months ago.
This program has been great for me, as a new mother. 1) The exercise program includes a lot of walking, which my baby loves!
2) The recipes are quick and easy to prepare. 3) Denise has written out grocery lists which save me tons of time.
This book is great for busy new moms who want to shed pounds from pregnancy.

5-0 out of 5 stars finally losing weight after two babies
I read the book in a couple of days while nursing my second baby. I can do the workout with my baby and toddler. It is four days of walking and four days of toning muscles using wieghts. I finished week 1 : portion control on the diet plan. I can finally fit into my jeans while doing the strength toning (not recommended). I loved the DVD. The eating plan in the book is just as wonderful. And I can do it while nursing a seventeen pound baby. I love it!

5-0 out of 5 stars It Works
My sister used this book to lose weight she had put on after having a baby-and she was never exactly skinny to begin with. Without too much strain, she has managed to put on 80 lbs. by sitting around, eating bon-bons, and reading this book!Just Kidding!

Alright, I know this is serious stuff to some people. The truth is she now looks great, and the attention she gets from guys has increased dramatically-usually it decreases after having a baby, so that's saying something. I think women everywhere should give this a try, but my sister should trade her copy for a box of chocolate bars so I don't have to worry about her so much!

If you know a fat woman, get her this. Sorry, I'm just having a hard time taking this seriously.

4-0 out of 5 stars A realistic way to lose weight!!
She gives it to you honestly, and like any diet plan, you will lose weight. But with her diet she doesn't eliminate certain food groups like breads and fruits. She gets you moving with her motivational words and years of expereince. The DVD is a great complement to the diet plan, and don't forget her FREE morning workouts on the Lifetime Channel! She has not been a thin personal all her life, she has had two kids, so her encouragement and determination to stay fit and healthy into her 40's is real and refreshing. Like any diet plan, your determination and stick-to-it-ness is the only way you will see success!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE AHAH! BOOK
I was about four years old when I discovered that things die, and the outrage that I felt at this news has fueled a fifty year search to understand what we're doing here. This is not my only literary quest, but it is a big one, and it has taken me all over the map. When I studied relativity and quantum physics in college, I saw - 'through a glass darkly' - that this was an important piece of the puzzle, but real understanding eluded me. I just bought the The Visionary Window, and I knew almost immediately, that this, for me, was the Ahah! book - the one that brought all the pieces together. I recommend it highly.

4-0 out of 5 stars Hold a Webster with you for this
Although the book seems to be sincere effort in terms of the treatment of subject, but the language is too tricky with very very esoteric terminology used. Also the use of word 'quantum' seems to be too casual and thus the terms such as 'quantum monad' seem too ambiguous. Perhaps when Mr Goswami has finally reached some perspective about 'truth', he will realize that any truth that can be expressed, ceases to be 'the truth'.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Unification of Eastern and Western thought.
Many students of philosophy understand and appreciate both
Western materialist philosophies and Eastern philosophies
more centered on consciousness. Like looking at an atom,
and looking at a galaxy, these two philosophies needed a
middleground to connect them
In this book, Goswami is the first person ever to unify
the two seemingly disparate ideologies. He provides the
middleground in a way that books like "The Tao of Physics"
fail to do. (They only "hint" at the connection).

I am very happy that I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very highly recommended reading for students of physics
With his insightful and occasionally inspiring observations and commentaries integrating the spiritual with the scientific, Amit Goswami's The Visionary Window: A Quantum Physicist's Guide To Enlightenment to present a new scientific paradigm placing human values as paramount. He shows how the principles embedded and revealed through the new science of quantum physics can help the reader tap into an inner creativity, deepen spirituality, and life a life of liberation and fulfillment. The Visionary Window is very highly recommended reading for students of physics, metaphysics, and spirituality.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Visionary Window
Unlike Dr. Goswami's other books, which often meander and seem too technical for a layperson, this book is extremely well-written and easy for anyone interested in the new physics and spirituality to understand. This is a fascinating account of exactly how quantum physics might be used to explain such complex spiritual phenomenon as reincarnation, karma, shaktipat, the chakras and physical death. Dr. Goswami's father was a Hindu guru in India. However,as a small boy hiding in an English library during the Indian War of Independence, his son read all of Einstein's works and began a lifelong journey to find explanations in the laws of physics for the most mysterious spiritual tenets of the ancient Upanishads. Today, Dr. Goswami teaches quantum physics at the University of Oregon, and is a scholar in residence at the Institute of Noetic Sciences. Consequently, he seems the most qualified of the "new physicists" to integrate Eastern spirituality with Western science. This books offers people in the West nothing less than a real opportunity to understand God, and, as such, is probably the most spectacular book you'll ever read. ... Read more

Atkins argues that low-fat meals are high-carbohydrate missiles, causing the body to produce excess insulin, which then produces fat, slows down metabolism, and tips the scale.Instead, he urges readers to stop counting calories and fat grams and start counting carbs to rev up their metabolism and burn fat as an energy source. The question of whether "ketosis," the fat meltdown he advocates, is healthy or harmful is a central question of this sequel to the bestselling Dr. Atkins’ New Diet Revolution. Packed with recipes, menus, carbohydrate counters, and strategies for staying with the plan, this book is less clear than its predecessor. It veers back and forth between how to begin and how to maintain "a controlled carbohydrate lifestyle." It is also more promotional, with photos of satisfied slim folks and pitches for the branded Atkins products. Still, with its pages of testimonials and studies about weight loss, lowered cholesterol, and increased energy, it is hard to argue with Atkins’s results. He puts his proof in the pudding. --Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Atkins for Life
My husband follows the Atkins diet; I'm the one who does most of the food shopping and cooking for the whole family. We both find "Atkins for Life," which focuses on maintaining the weight loss you have achieved through a low-carbohydrate diet, to be a big help. It reviews all the phases of the Atkins diet, but if you are just starting out you are better off with "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution." This book gives detailed instructions for transitioning from the rather extreme meat-and-cheese-based diet to a more balanced plan that includes higher carb vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and legumes. Whether you want to count carbs, learn about the science behind the diet, use lists of foods to eat "regularly," "in moderation," and "sparingly," or follow sample menus, this book has it all. Also included are tips for restaurant eating and substitutions for home cooking, as well as many recipes. The role of exercise is emphasized too. I'm not wild about the recipes (sugar substitute, yuck!) but the food lists provide guidance for preparing Atkins-friendly, well-balanced meals for the whole family. Like some of the other reviewers, I found the constant "selling" of the Atkins plan and products to be a turn-off, but my husband liked reading the success stories and uses the products so I guess there really is something here for everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for weight maintenance the Atkins way!
As many people know, losing weight is often times easier than keeping it off. Atkins addresses this issue in his latest book, "Atkins For Life".

The book "Atkins for Life" is an excellent resource book. It is filled with practical advice and tips on how to make your low carbohydrate weight loss a permanent success.

Over the years Atkins name has been maligned and sneered at as he pioneered the idea that its not the fat in our diet that makes us fat its the excessive amounts of carbohydrates we have been consuming. The low fat diet was presented to Americans as the best way and the healthiest way to lose weight. However, recent research has revealed the low fat diet to be a miserable failure. As the fat has been taken out of the diet carbohydrates have been added in their place and many Americans have become obese and unhealthy. Dr. Atkin's proposal that eating less carbs can lead to weight loss and better health has been vindicated.

The Atkins weight loss method is a 4 step approach. Phase 1 INDUCTION is where you limit your carbs to 20 grams per day to jump start your weight loss program. Phase 2 OWL or ONGOING WEIGHT LOSS allows you to slowly add back carbs until you discover the amount of carbs you can eat and still lose weight.
Phase 3 PRE-MAINTENANCE has you slow your weight loss by adding in more carbs so good eating habits become ingrained. And in Phase 4 LIFETIME MAINTENANCE you learn to enjoy a wider variety of foods and maintain your weight loss. This book "Atkins for Life" discusses each of the phases but is mainly concerned with Phase 4 LIFETIME MAINTENANCE.
You can learn what to do to lose weight with this book, but for in depth information, you would be better off selecting "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution".

This book covers in great detail how to maintain the weight you have lost. Part One: A Lifetime Plan recaps the Atkins program. It includes information on the diet, the effect on your body, putting it into practice and how to benefit from exercise. Part Two: Eating for Life teaches you how to get your kitchen in order, and gives thirty meal plans with carb counts. It includes twenty meal plans for special occasions. 125 recipes for success are also given.

YES you can eat carbohydrates. You can have bread, cake and pizza or even wine. The key of course is knowing how many carbohydrates your body can handle each day without gaining weight. And using techniques to get the most bang from your carbohydrate buck. These techniques are taught in the book. For example if you crave bread Atkins has several pages of information to help you make the best selection. Breads are ranked on their ability to effect your insulin levels. There are also tips on how to enjoy bread without overdoing it such as eating the crust only. Atkins shares techniques like this for a variety of foods.

Comfort foods are a big issue for many. Atkins tells you what to choose or what to substitute. Eating out is another area covered. Best choices at different restaurants is given in detail. Atkins also includes mental tips to help you avoid backsliding.

Key to the book is the detailed menu plans given for 4 ranges of carb levels at 45g, 60g, 80g and 100g . Just adjust up or down so you are at your level (which you learn from his diet). Meal plans are simple and include snacks. A sample day for a 60 g plan would include 1 slice lemon zucchini bread, with an egg and ricotta cheese for breakfast. Meat loaf with whole-grain bread and salad for lunch.
Jerk shrimp with pasta or collard greens for dinner and 1/2 cup of cantaloupe for a snack. Carb counts are given so you can substitute as desired.

Crab Deviled Eggs, Cherry Muffins, Mixed Berry Shortcakes, Pinwheel Cookies, Roasted Chicken and Feta Cheese Wrap, Chocolate Souffle and Southwestern Style Pork Fajitas are among the 125 recipes. Recipes include nutritional information, but are not pictured.

The 370 page book also includes self tests and quizzes to help you stay on task. My favorite part of "Atkins For Life" has to be the success stories. There are a number of remarkable stories in the book with black and white photos included! Very inspiring!

The book "Atkins For Life" makes living a low carb life in our high carb world easier and enjoyable! I highly recommend it!

3-0 out of 5 stars Good advice but a bit wishy-washy
Anyone who's read the original Atkins Diet Revolution will get a bit of a shock when they skim through this book. It feels like more of a marketing effort, tailored to the mainstream, than traditional Atkins. They seem to have bowed to criticism a bit from the media and mainstream nutritionists.

That said, the book has a lot of good information and is very well organized. I just take it with a grain of salt (actually potassium salt substitute).

From the bestselling author of Strong Women Stay Young comes a metabolism-boosting plan that's completely hype-free. The basis of this book is simple: because muscle is metabolically active and fat is not, when you increase your muscle mass, you're able to burn more calories, even when at rest. The author, an assistant professor at Tufts University's prestigious School of Nutrition Science and Policy, has shown that of a group of women who followed a special weight-loss diet, those who also did weight-training exercises lost 44 percent more fat than the other women and increased their overall metabolic rates by up to 15 percent.

Nelson's plan is especially effective for women looking to drop postpregnancy weight. The book includes tests to determine your fitness level, injury-preventing stretches, dumbbell exercises that give quick results, progress charts, and pages of suggested menus and recipes that include handy shopping lists. The plan's goal is to increase muscle strength, not bulk, and it's geared toward first-time exercisers and those who lose motivation easily. For those who are skeptical of weight-loss books, rest assured that this one won't disappoint. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstandingly sensible, balanced and scientifically grounded
If you're a fitness freak or on a stable weight you are happy with, find another book. This one isn't for you. Ditto if you are looking for super fast weight gain or have a penchant for fad diets. Ditto if you are looking for a full-on gung-ho weights program.

If you are struggling to lose weight, have ever lost weight and bounced back up again, are happy with your weight but not your shape, have tried all the diets, or even haven't tried them, or don't know where to start - then this is the book for you.... regardless of age (or even gender!).

Dr Nelson's book focuses on strength training as a fundamental element of healthy weight loss, particularly for its role in maintaining bone density (and toning!) - as opposed to the diet/aerobic exercise route which can lead to loss of bone density and/or loss of muscle (rather than fat). That said, she also covers the role of good nutrition (focusing on the long term, not the faddish) and aerobic exercise.

The result is not "dieting" as such, but healthier living. If you want to lose 30lbs in 3 months this isn't the book to read - but if you want to lose 30lbs steadily and KEEP IT OFF, then dive in. Generally I would say the focus is on inches, tone and well-being rather than pounds anyway.

The discussion of studies, science etc could have been heavy, but wasn't - it was very readable and even extremely motivating. It meant everything in the book made sense, which for me, made it easier to take on the recommendations of this book as a lifestyle not a fad.

The exercises are very easy, but if you are just starting out, that's not a bad thing - better than throwing you in with stuff you can't do, and they will give you plenty to build on. This book will give you a great, balanced foundation to a healthier lifestyle.

There's plenty of checks along the way to keep you on track and getting results - have you chosen a good goal weight (and do you need one?), are you working out at the right intensity, are you eating well, are there warning signs that you are coming off the rails?

You're also supported with checks to track your exercise and eating - backed by research showing that those who keep track, stay on track and get better results.

4-0 out of 5 stars good beginning
I have found this book very heldpful in getting me on the road to being fit. I have followed the ten week program which is simply laid out and easy to follw. I am much stronger, I've lost 7 pounds (I'm not over weight) for the first time in my life I excercize reguarly and look forward to it. The weight lifting is very simple and definetly for beginners but as time has progressed I have added more excercizes, while keeping the basic program. I am really sorry to read the negative reveiws as it might keep some one who really needs some help motivating from buying the book. I personally think the simplicity and ease of the program is what has kept me motivated. Also the food part of the book is very easy, and for once it does not have starvation in mind.(like so many diet books)

5-0 out of 5 stars Not for athletes, but a good place to start
This book is written for those who are sedentary to at most
moderately active, and want to change their behavior so as to
accomplish long-term weight loss. It is a good motivator for
getting started with strength training and keeping track of
what you eat. It is definitely not intended for athletes,
but rather the 75% of American women (so it says) that don't
get regular exercise 3 days per week.

The strength training part focuses on 6 exercises, most of
which usedumbbells. This is not a whole lot, but for the
intended audience it is helpful in keeping the program from
being overwhelming. For more intense exercise, you will have
to look elsewhere. There are a few illustrations; it would be
better if they showed the exercises step-by-step, but the
written directions are acceptable and it's easy enough to
figure things out by just trying it. One nice touch is that
a variety of people are shown doing the exercises -- they
don't all look like young fitness instructors. This section
also explains the importance of strength training for
strengthening bones, raising basal metabolism, and making
other exercise easier.

The book discusses a variety of different aerobic exercises,
but points out that the most important thing is to find
something convenient enough that you can do it several times
a week, and to make sure it's intense enough to get results
-- it describes how to tell when this is happening.

The food plan part is probably the most complex and largest
section, but it is based just on the food pyramid. It's
nothing new, but it provides a good way of keeping track of
how balanced your diet really is. This food plan allows 25%
fat, which is probably going to feel low to anyone who's been
eating a Western diet and not thought about fat much.

If you want a short-term diet, this is not the book for you.
If you're not active and want to change, this is a very
useful book. If you already do strength training, it seems
likely that you're already doing much of what this book says,
so try to borrow it and have a look before you decide to buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Chock full of Great Health Informaton
This book makes a lot of sense. I have been trying to slim down for years and had haulted my metabolism with many low-cal diets. Her information helped me to raise my metabolism and build lean muscle. Her book includes an excercise plan as well as a sound nutritional meal plan. She makes a great case for women to include weight training in their physical routines. Her exercises are easy to follow for any average woman.

5-0 out of 5 stars For former yo-yo dieters, this works when nothing else will!
I wish I had read this book when I was 30--at that age, I had absolutely no trouble losing all the weight I wanted quickly--and I did it over & over --until I "hit the wall" approaching menopause at 50, packing on pounds (& rolls) over my mid-section that didn't budge even eating 500 calories a day, always tired, struggling to walk up stairs etc.--all because of the loss of muscle that comes with age. The happy news I learned from this book is that with strength training that can all be reversed--and in my case, it was, in less than two months of following this program. It was simple, enjoyable, I could do it any time, at home, with no special equipment but a few pairs of dumbells. Without dieting (but following better eating principles outlined in the book)I lost 20 pounds, doubled the amount of weight I could lift, run up flights of stairs, and no longer need to take a nap in the middle of the day to get through to normal bedtime. My quality of life is so much improved, it's amazing, and I've passed this book to many friends. Highly recommended for every women, but especially those over 40! ... Read more

The 7-Day Low-Carb Rescue and Recovery Plan The word "miracle" isn't in the title, but perhaps it should be. In The 7-Day Low-Carb Rescue and Recovery Plan, The Drs. Heller (The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet) have designed a tremendously simple week-long "jump start" for anyone who wants to give low-carb living a shot--or even a second try. With their emphasis on lean proteins and plenty of fiber, rather than plain "slabs of meat" at every meal, you'll actually be adding food to your daily regimen for the first days of the program. As you continue the week, carb-heavy foods will be moved to the end of meals; partially removed; and removed entirely. A generous handful of recipes are included, all of which include plenty of spices and flavor, from the mushroom garlic dip to the sesame pork with garlic cream sauce. Some, like a flour-free "crepe," can be made ahead in stacks and frozen for later munching. The remainder of the book is helpful even to those who are doing a decent job sticking to your plan during typical days, but have problems when faced with holidays or dinners out with friends. The Hellers detail a few typical experiences we all encounter--waiting for friends at a bar and "rewarding" ourselves with sugar-laden desserts is one--and then demonstrate how to avoid typical pitfalls. Repeated urgings to "take care of yourself first" and deal with emotional issues behind food aim at long-term solutions, while methods of polite refusal will help those who feel they simply can't say "no" to a full bread basket at a restaurant. Whether you're picking up where you left off or just looking for some new techniques for keeping your weight stable, chances are you'll find them in this upbeat, encouraging book. --Jill Lightner ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Noticeable Difference
In this book the Heller doctors present an alternative approach to the typical low carb diet. Drs Heller suggest you start slow, and work up to a low carb diet over a 7 day period. Using this approach, the dieter has an easier time of adjusting to a carb free diet, without the sudden shock of going cold turkey.

However, in my opinion the best part of this book is Part Two, where they discuss tactics, tips, and strategies for succeeding on this diet. I learned in this book that artifical sweetners and MSG were sabotaging my weight loss goals. After suffering for weeks on a low carb diet, I had reached a plateua and my body refused to yield a single more pound. After reading this book I have removed artifical sweetners from my diet, and try to minimize MSG consumption. This is not easy, as MSG is virtually all of our processed foods, including the protein broth ingredient used in canned tuna. Also, the Hellers disclose some of the hidden carbs in food generally accepted as good on this diet. For example, I had been eating a sizable amount of vegetables that I thought were safe, but alas, they were loaded with hidden carbs.

The main premise of the Heller low-carb diet is to eat in a way that effectively manages your blood sugar levels. The book gives you plenty of ideas on how to do this, including some surprising debunking of popular low carb diet myths.

5-0 out of 5 stars The absolute best!
I have dozens of diet books - many of them low carb diets. This is by far the best book I have. While Atkins and many of the others starts you off with the hardest part of the diet and eases you in to more carbs, this plan suggests you work into the diet over 7 phases. It is so much easier and so much more effective. I never could last on the Atkins diet, but this diet shows you how to eat a healthy diet and have a little of anything you want. At last - I have found a healthy eating plan that works for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars I was out of control. This book was my answer.
Before this book i was out of control and when I say out of control, I mean it. Even though I'd lost over thirty pounds on the "biggest low-carb diet going", I couldn't stay with it. I gained back fifteen pounds of the thirty I lost and couldn't get a grip on my eating.

I got this book as soon as it was released and within two days I knew I was going to be okay. It's been only a week but just like they said I'm already back in control. I've started losing weight again and I have carbs everyday without going nuts. I don't cheat and I feel like my old self again.

I am so glad I didn't give up. This book was my answer. I hope it's yours.

5-0 out of 5 stars Before this book I couldn't stick to a low-carb diet
My letter is short and to the point.
When I heard about this book I was trying to figure out what to do. I couldn't stick with either of the low-carb diets I tried. I couldn't go a day without going off my diet.
Each night I'd promise myself i would get it together the next day and every day I'd blow it at least once. I was getting nowhere fast.
There's something amazing about how easy this book is to follow. I finished the last step and I never cheated. Not once!
I have no problem staying off carbohydrates because I can eat them in a controlled way everyday. I don't need to go off my diet and I don't want to. That's what's really great.
I would recommend this book for anybody who just can't get stick to the typical low-carb diet no matter how hard they try.
Like the book says: no blame here, just help. ... Read more
