I don't think Covey wrote this workbook himself.

The writing style is not "Coveyist" at all.

This book has nothing new to say. 7 habits become old, boring habits, without new perspectives or insights to the readers.

It is time for Covey to really think Win/Win with his readers. Write more good books. Not just do too much out-sourcing or sub-contracting in writing.

There isn't too much writing in this book actually. It revolves mostly around making series of collages from amgazine clippings, etc around different self discovery themes. This is a refreshing change from the usual "Write, write, write!" I found that I felt MORE creative and very relaxed. It's a fun return to the "paste and scissors" free-for-all of your early school days.
The only frustration I experienced was that you have to wait a while to gather up enough pictures in your theme before you can actually start putting a collage together.
The themes include: Authenic Style, Entertainment, Authenic Sucess, The House of Belonging, Return to Self, Mystery, Sacred connections, Spiritual Journey, and Someday.
I was surprised by what pops up out of your subconcious when you look at your pictures as a collection -something that isn't as likely to happen with just writing where you can tend to over-analyze.

This book was very interesting. It challenges you to think outside the box of conventional "wisdom". Once you allow for the possibility that what we as a civilization are programmed to believe is not beyond reproah, there is some powerful and empowering concepts. I am both a physician and a mother of a son who arrived 11 weeks early. This book has helped in every facet of my premature parenthood from breastfeeding (or, in my case, my ongoing attempts) to just feeling I was not the only preemie parent out there. In addition, the explanations of the various medical problems premature babies may face are excellent. Truly, a book that every premature parent would benefit from having.

Our son was born at 26 weeks (3 months early) and was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until one day past his due date. We were given this book after he'd been there one month. Let me tell you what a life-saver it was! We had been given a "crash course" in the care delivered to a premature infant... very scary stuff. Wires, machines, noise, drugs -- and in the middle of it all this unbelievably tiny human being who is your child. This book took much of the fear away and instead educated us. Preemies don't stop being preemies when they come home! This book gives the technical data in an easy to understand format that is not condescending and also focuses on the emotional as well as physical needs of the baby. Additionally, it gives contacts and information on potential problems, how to spot them early, and how to handle them. There is also a good referal list in the back. I would recommend this book not only to preemie parents, but to anyone in contact with a preemie and their family. PS. As of this writing, our son is one year old and doing great!

My son was born seven weeks early and although we knew there was a possibility of this we were not prepared for some of the unique situations that we experienced. This book could be our story for how accurately it describes what happens from birth to the NICU. Five months later I still reference it. If you think you might have your baby early buy this now!

After our daughter's premature birth at 26 gestational weeks I purchased three books on the subject and read the materials available in the parents' room at the NICU. I found this to be the handiest reference for a number of reasons. First, it provides general information on common preemie conditions and care without delving into too much detail. There is enough information to give you a foundation to discuss your child's condition with care providers. Second, it offers useful information for the transition to caring for your premature child at home. Specifically, the book includes sample questions, checklists and diaries, which I used as a template for my own checklists and care/medicine logs. Finally, the tone and style of this book help parents keep things in perspective without adding anxiety to an already challenging experience.

Iyanla Vanzant has had a tremendous life. I read this book a few years ago and I did then and still do today, think that it's a spectacular piece of work. One of the things that seems to stay right of the front of my mind, is when Iyanla talks about how your thinking changes and the things that were once important, will no longer be important. I didn't understand it when I read but after growing up, and going through, I now understand. As always, Thank You and Great Job Iyanla.

I found this book at a time when I was experiencing extreme confusion, pain, self-doubt, and depression. Along with the support of friends and a near-breakdown that took me to the door of madness, this book helped me reconsider my "problems" as opportunities for growth. I am aware that certain strains of Buddhism also speak of using problems as catapaults to growth. Here, Iyanla trances her life (almost chronologically) and, with hindsight, forms a lesson for each particular situation she faced. Many of her lessons came from difficult situations: abuse, infidelity, poverty, teenage pregnancy, an absent father, etc.

Central to her process is remembering, which from personal experience, is often one of the hardest things to do, especially if you have a vested interest in forgetting. But that's the point: without remembering, the lessons will never truly stick. And this act of remembering takes LOTS of effort and time. Iyanla, despite her "success" and public profile, admits that she still has healing to do, that in fact it's a life long process. This is especially true for those of us who have waited decades to actually begin to "clean up the crap." There are years of hard-wired behavior patterns that must be seen, analysed (self-analysis is a major part of her style/technique for growth), and then EFFORT must be applied to change them.

For anyone who has walked the path before, changing adult human behavior requires major effort and awareness. Iyanla's writing helps keep you in a place of awareness and helps refocus our efforts on our OWN LIFE and its meaning in the cosmos. In other words, while sometimes it appears we strive to change to make ourselves more attractive in a relationship, more employable, more socially interesting, ultimately we must change only for ourselves and our own desire for a BETTER life, a more intimate life with ourselves. Only once this is achieved can we hope to share with others.

There are many other techniques and ideas which are helpful. For example: old self vs. new self (Iyanla is not Iyanla's birth name but a name she took for her developing self); prayer (even if you don't believe in God or have a particular faith, prayer keeps you focused on what is necessary for your healing and growth); creating a supportive community.

Read, enjoy, and WORK with this book. I highly recommend it. It is like a memoir in some way, and shows how one woman mined her life for lessons and put forth the effort to remake herself beyond her subconsious patterns, fears, and social/economic class. ... Read more

I see so many parallels in this book with Zen quotes that I can't help but think this is what Zen is all about. Basically, the authors teach, "Your thoughts are not you!" They say that your sense of being is usually made up of the thoughts you have, and that your feelings and emotions are preceded and created by your thoughts, so nip all your destructive thoughts, and there you have your true self, which they call "the healthy psychological functioning." This "healthy psychological functioning" must be what Zen master Rinzai called "true man" in one of his sermons, where he proclaimed, "On your lump of red flesh is a true man without rank who is always going in and out of the face of every one of you. Those who have not yet experienced him-look! look!" The authors not only provide great analysis on the workings of the mind but also teach a simple but practical way of seeing for yourself the difference between "analytical, past-bound mode" and "non-analytical, free-flowing, present mode." It's interesting the authors seem to be conveying without religious connotations what Buddha taught more than two millenia ago.

This book just plain made sense. I know, I know, the concepts in it borrow from Buddhism, and yet it was refreshing to read a book which did not have any religious connotations. It is the 'normal' thing to do to analyze everything that comes into our minds, but if we want to have inner peace in our lives and to have a sense of flow, we must not force our thoughts. I spent a long time reading this book because I enjoyed it so much. It is worth the effort to adopt this way of life in order to enjoy life to the fullest.

Do not be mislead by the title. If you are looking for tactics you can use to simplfy your live, you will not find these here. This book talks more to what is happening in you mind. The author contends that we think about things in one of two ways. We either analyze a situation or thought to death or we let the thought come and go. It is when we allow free flow thinking to guide us that we feel less rushed and more in control thus living a simpler life. The ideas in this book make a great deal of sense. However, after reading about three-quarters of the way through, you want solutions to the situations. You want to know what you can do to get into the free flow. I was skeptical of this book at first but immediately was drawn into the teachings from two differently disciplined people with one theory. What makes the book seem more credible to me was that Shealy is a medical doctor interested in holistic teaching, while Myss studied spirituality and holistic teaching and applies it to the medical field. More than anything, I saw this book as a great stepping stone to where the medical sciences are bound to go in the coming of our "New" age.I think eventually this book and the ideas presented in it need to be taken (and will be taken)into serious consideration by the medical field, as the examples used were believable and things I have seen myself.

The only reason I was short on the stars is because the amount of errors in this edition drove me batty. Sorry, but I prefer not to have to stumble upon typos by a publication while reading!

While Myss and Shealy's book is interesting and thought provoking in that it introduces novel information regarding the mind-body connection, it lacks the scientific support that would make it entirely believable. Though the book's credibility is enhanced by the fact that Shealy is a medical doctor, there are far too many statements throughout that leave the reader wondering where the information came from and if it is backed by any research studies. Many valid points and theories are presented, however, they tend to be mixed in with very subjective and unsupported material. I would suggest that this book be used as a basic guideline for the current discourse about the connection between emotional, spiritual, and physical health, but that any information be further researched by consulting scholarly works in order to ensure its legitimacy.

Myss and Shealy make clear that we are at a turning point in the diagnosis and understanding of disease. The trend in medicine to examine the influences of stress has retintroduced us to the knowledge that emotional tension is disruptive to the physical body. "...this recognition that human emotions do indeed affect physical health," they write, "has brought the traditional medical world face to face with the fundamental principle of holistic health: The majority of physical illnesses result from an overload of emotional, psychological and spiritual crises."

They outline eight dysfunctional stress patterns:

- Unresolved or deeply consuming emotional, psychological, or spiritual stress. - Negative (and disempowering) belief patterns. - Inability to give and/or receive love. - Lack of humor/inability to distinguish serious concerns from life's lesser issues. - Failure to exercise the power of choice in the matters of one's own life. - Lack of attention to the needs of the physical body. - Absence or loss of meaning in one's life. - Inability to face life's challenges and to acknowledge and change what is not working.

The term "Holistic" refers to a way of approaching healing that incorporates a variety of therapies including traditional medicine. "Metaphorically speaking, traditional medicine represents the 'mind' of health care and the holistic approach represents the 'heart' of health care." This book is an important guideline for approaching the heart of health care -- a useful frame of reference to examine how our lives contribute to illness or wholeness, particularly those who have already become ill, their families, and their caregivers.

Im my small wellness center, I've sold more of this book than any other. The author gives a very precise and easy to understand discription of the chakra system, in real words than anyone can relate to and see thier own issues in. As a reference book, its fantastic. You can look up the energetic causes of most of the diseases you'll ever hear about, and Carolines sage advice on prevention. Dr. Shealy adds the eliment of the Scientific credibility to Caroline intuitive diagnoses. My copy is dog eared, highlighted and worn. It is one of my Velveteen Rabits. Bravo to the authors. :-) ... The A-Z Steps that Deepak has listed in his book are more than just "steps" to affluence. I think most, if not all of the steps listed, are great "principles" for everyone to live by. The author also indicates that these steps are not only going to provide an abundance of financial wealth but and abundance of anything we desire in life. This is most important for me in my growth as a person. I personally measure my success as something more than just financial wealth.

In order to fully appreciate the steps that he has listed, I think that it is a good idea to read a few pages each day or once a week in order to fully understand and make a habit of each step. The author suggests this as a method of becoming "aware" of each step.

Overall, a great book on personal growth. The principles he teaches are time tested and true. The only problem I found was that the author tends to get very deep into Quantum Theory and physics. I do not see the significance of discussing these topics in a book about personal growth and affluence in life.

I have read and reread this book for two years. I also own the audio cassette. This is not a "how to" book that lists step by step how to become wealthy as if you were building cabinets or installing a door. It is, however, a very powerful book that attempts to change the way one thinks. Creating affluence or building wealth requires an entirely different way of thinking that most of us were not taught as we were growing up. In order to change anything in your life, you must first change your thinking. This book teaches you this in an easy to read format. The Quantum theory is not as easy to understand, but it is necessary to explain how these thoughts and techniques work.

Much like any tool, it is only as effective as its user. If you do as the author suggests and read this book daily or listen to the tape, you will reap the rewards. You may not grasp all of it the first few times through.

I feel that it is only the first step. I would also recommend that one read the Rich Dad series after this one. If you haven't read Dale Carnegie's How to Win Friends and Influence People, you should read it as well.

I sat down and read this book in two days...I just couldn't put it down. For the first time in my life (I am a young woman in my twenties) I am looking forward to the process of growing older and wiser. Even looking forward to experiencing the changes my body will go through in menopause. I no longer fear getting older and losing my "beauty". This book has caused powerful insight and reflection moving me closer to my potential. The mystery of womanhood is celebrated and embraced in this book rather than touted as less important than "traditional" roles. I will refer back to this book again and again, as well as recommend it to the women in my life who I hold the dearest.

If you are a woman, or have a woman in your life (mother, wife, daughter, etc.), you should read this book. In other words, whoever you are, you should read this book. It's accessable and easy to read, but packed so full of information and new ideas that even if you disagree with half the book, the other half will open your eyes.

Dr. Borysenko is a scientist, with strong interests in health, spirituality, mind-body interaction, and the role of women in our society. This book synthesizes those ideas into a fascinating whole. It's definitely pitched to the layman (layperson?) rather than to scientists, and presents a broad range of ideas in an accessible and entertaining manner.

Borysenko's goal is to describe the physical and mental changes women undergo in their lives, and to outline a positive way to view each of the phases in a woman's life - childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and maturity. She synthesizes a tremendous amount of science and wisdom to do it, discussing everything from genetics and cell division to Lakota Sioux attitudes towards menstruation. Few readers are likely to agree with everything Borysenko writes, but her ability to take disparate information and combine it is sure to give every reader some new insights into women's physical and mental development, and ways in which women can craft their role in life.

Borysenko introduces most chapters with the ongoing story of a hypothetical character, "Julia", as she matures through each of Borysenko's stages of life. As some of the other reviewers have pointed out, Julia seems to be an idealized verion of Dr. Borysenko herself, an upper-middle class white American with strong interests in womens' development. While this may alienate some readers, I think it's worth sticking with the book. Again, the book is so full of information, presented so well, that a reader may find herself uninterest in Julia but interested in Borysenko's advice on mediation, or on hormonal vs. lifestyle therapy for menapause, or by her information on cultural body image standards in the U.S., or by any of a hundred other things.

Borysenko provides enough scientific detail to educate the reader and support her arguments, but does not get so bogged down with neuroanatomy and biology that we get lost or bored. She offers insightful interpretations of biological and psychological research while weaving in stories and making the information come to life. This is a thought-provoking book that challenges the many assumptions about femininity and, instead of trying to make women more like men, celebrates the differences between the two sexes. Inspiring work that made me proud of my feminine characteristics.

During the beginning of 1999 I was having one bad day after another. One day I decided to take an extra long lunch bought the book, and read up to that present date. It help me to put my troubles in perspective. I now share the passages with with my spouse, my children, friends and I am kept sane and whole by it. I truly believe that it is a tool of God to reach us and to bring us peace for our souls. I had a troubling time with my sister in March of this year and each passage during those days were like having my parents (both of whom a deceased) arms wrapped around me. It kept me from really hurting her feelings and kept my end of the relationship repaired. Thank you Iyanla your gift of this book will resound though the centuries. Love Barbara

This book has inspired me. I have found several meditations that apply whole heartedly to my life. I have retyped and copied several of the quotes and taped them to my refrigerator or put them on my bulletin board at work. This is a book I needed years ago.

This book has given me insight and inspiration on several different topics. Since I bought it a few years ago, I have yet to put it down. I'm always reading this. I have become more pleasant in certain circumstance because of something I've read here.

For anybody facing lifes highs and lows or debating whether or not to start meditating this book is one you should have. It's so nice to have a book that focuses on the daily ins and outs of being a person of color.

I rate this book with 5 stars because it takes patience and persistance to figure out how to remove the "gunk" from most recipes, which is what has been done here, and still have them taste good!

Unfortunately you have to "cook from scratch", which I personally love to do. Fortunately, someone has done most of the leg work for you. This is a good overview of how to prepare low carb foods, from soup to desserts.

Atkins's low carb philosophy is a life-style, so anyone who hopes to be successfull should read this book and get other low carb recipes as well, and then adapt them to their own taste.

Now I eat as much "cheese cake" without guilt as I want, continue to shrink in size and feel great.

What more of a testimonial can I make!

Hands down the best low carb cookbook with the Candida diet in mind. I've purchased several in the past 3 months, but this book has some fantastic recipes for the Candida diet (a week's worth of menus and all of the recipes are fantastic!). If you are looking for a recipe book for low carb/Candida, look no further.

It is astonishing to read the slam pieces here about Dr. Atkins so-called obesity and overweight condition at the time of his death. Here are the facts:
* He previously had a heart condition called cardiomyopathy -- a serious disease of the heart muscle which is unrelated to diet.
* He died of a head injury because of an accident falling on slippery ice and not of being overweight.
* His actual weight was 200 pounds when he was admitted to the hospital at the time of his accident. The erroneous reports of him weight 258 lbs was based on his weight at the time of his death. The extra weight was not fat, but an accumulation of body fluids linked to organ failure during his coma.
* His previous reported heart attack was due to a viral infection and not diet related. He spoke openly of his condition on various national news programs.
* The report that was released about him being overweight was leaked to the press by a group named "Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine", which is an ardent opponent of the Atkins diet. In short, they distorted his weight by reporting the weight at the time of death - 258 lbs, and not at the time of his admittance - 200 lbs...an obvious attempt to discredit and distort the facts surrounding Dr. Atkins death.
* A formal complaint has been filed by the Medical Examiner of New York regarding the suspicious leak of this information to the public by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine."
* The disinformation surrounding Dr.Atkins untimely death is politically driven by the AMA and other detractors of the diet.

Dr. Atkins book, New Diet Revolution has turned the AMA and other nutritional views upside down and has created a furor over the standard edicts of the medical profession. What is not said among the detractors of the Diet is that it is safe and it works. The information contained in this book will not only help you lose weight, it could save your life. The food industry, especially the bread and pasta industry have lost hundreds of millions of dollars because of the low carb revolution. Is it any wonder that this diet is under so much fire? Keep an open mind and read the book.

As a side note, ignor the mumbo-jumbo rantings and ravings of the "Elixir Diet" system. The hatred and mis-information spread by the reviewer is evidence enough that the Elixir system is phony as a three cent penny. Nuff said. The guy hasn't even read the Atkins book! Sheesh.

After discovering Caroline Myss and her work in the areas of Self-Esteem, I took an interest in other areas of her research. While Archetypes, Sacred Contracts and Chakras may be foreign territory for many of us, these ideas can be rather enlightening.

I first discovered Chakras while doing a yoga video called "Yoga Zone Flexibility and Stress Release" and was amazed at how healed I was just after imagining colors in various areas of my body.

The "Journal of Inner Dialogue" is divided into three main sections:

Sacred Contracts
Archetypes
Chakras

Caroline uses questions to encourage you to examine your inner motivations, strengths, fears, energy blocks and challenges. She believes you made a sacred contract before you were born and this determines what you will learn in your life. While I can't validate this information myself, it is intriguing.

Since this is a journal-style book, you will find plenty of lined sheets for your own writing. You can fill in answers to questions, fill in sacred contract sheets or explore each chakra in depth. Thanks again Covert!

I was wary of purchasing this book as I've read Covert Bailey's original "Fit or Fat" and doubted that there was anything new to say on the subject. However, a friend convinced me to give it a try and I'm glad that I did. Valuable new information on wind sprints (not as strenuous as it sounds!) is included in this new book. I've incorporated sprints into my work out and have seen a dramatic jump in my fitness level. That alone was worth the price of the volume. Covert includes an easy formula to determine an accurate body fat measurement using a tape measure - just in case you don't appreciate spending $80 to be dunked in a tank of water or pinched with calipers. There's also an easy introduction to weight lifting that you can do at home without purchasing any expensive equipment. Even though I try to get to the gym a couple times a week to do weights, there are days when it "just doesn't happen". I use this beginning program as my fall back plan. I just up the reps and I can get in some weightlifting exercise in my hotel room when I'm on business travel.

This book is intended for average folks that know they should be getting some exercise but have difficulty getting physical fitness into their daily routine. It's motivating, complete unto itself, and will explain in very clear and easy terms how to get the most physical benefit from your precious exercise time. (This applies to 90% of us.) This book is NOT intended for gym dogs or athletes in training that have already established an intense exercise program. That 10% of the populaton is training at a much higher level and already knows this stuff.

While there are more advantages than disadvantages to living in an age where we can get so much information about anything, it's a relief to read something simple and sensible about exercise and fitness. Bailey never makes you scratch your head trying to figure out what he means or undermines his own credibility with impossible promises.

I also love that the program he outlines is so simple and straight-forward. In case you can't translate into the latest fitness lingo, he's advocating interval training as the keystone of losing fat (with cross-training and weight-lifting playing a supporting role). I've been doing all of the above for a while and seeing results, but now I finally understand that it's not a good idea to push myself so far I hurt.

Although Bailey is emphatic that this is not a book about dieting or nutrition, again, his good sense comes through even there. This book is anti-diet in the way the American public has come to understand it. Bailey doesn't advocate that we eat like pigs and cautions against over-indulgence, but basically advocates a straight-forward eating plan where we stay away from fats and sweets. He cautions that while exercise is ultimately how we'll stay fit and healthy, we can eventually undermine that if we eat badly. Again, pretty reasonable.

A word of warning: this is not for people who want to look like size 0 supermodels or brawny weightlifters. This is for people who want to get or stay in good shape and sustain it for the rest of their lives. He has some very good (and simple) tools for figuring out just how fat you really are and what you should weigh. A lot of people will be surprised to find they only need to lose 5 pounds, not 15, and that losing that extra 10 will make them less fit, not more.

Ultimate Fit and Fat is an easy and quick read. Just as he did in his earlier book Smart Exercise, Bailey discusses the importance of exercising over dieting in improving and maintaining one's fitness. The recommendations that he makes regarding exercise are practical and easy to implement. I would strongly recommend this book to people who would like to improve their fitness AND understand the process of improving their health.

This is a highly readable guidebook to burning fat through exercise. Bailey uses just enough science to back up his suggestions, but not so much that an unscientific minded reader (such as myself) gets bogged down.

Bailey is very adamant that burning fat comes through exercise, and that trying to burn (lose) fat through diet alone is not nearly as effective. The best fat-burning combination includes 4 components: aerobic exercise, cross-training, weight training, and sprints.

Bailey does a great job of explaining how each of these exercise components works to help retrain the body and muscles to burn fat. There are very helpful tables and graphs throughout the book.

My one disappointment with this book concerns his formula to measure percent body fat. Although he claims this formula is "nearly" as precise as expensive medical alternatives (especially floatation methods), it has a 2 percent margin of error. That means your final calculation is correct *plus or minus 2 percent.* That means you have a range of 4 percentage points. That does not sound very precise or helpful to me.

Nonetheless, I found the book overall to be very instructive, and it will help me design my exercise workouts for no doubt much better fat burning results.

Covert Bailey remains a strong proponent of the fitness-health connection, and is an entertaining writer. Overall this book is pretty good. There are several pieces of misinformation though:
1. He makes the common "low intensity exercise" mistake of depicting fat-burning vs sugar-burning as a black and white issue. At higher exercise intensity levels, you don't suddenly switch to burning sugar instead of fat, you just burn a higher percentage of calories from sugar. But since you are also burning more total calories, you'll burn more fat than when exercising at lower intensities, AND burn more sugar. Further, higher intensity exercise leaves the metabolism higher so continues to burn calories after exercise (he mentioned this effect for weight lifting but missed it for other types of anaerobic exercise).
2. In addition to his incorrect prejudice against swimming (mentioned by another reviewer), he also incorrectly states that bicycling burns little fat. At slow speeds bicycling is comparable to walking in rate of calorie (and fat) burning, at higher speeds it is comparable to running. Just check any of the calorie calculators on the web to confirm this.
3. I think he is still missing one of the main points of the value of weight lifting, which is to reverse the continual muscle loss that occurs with aging in sedentary people. ... Read more

Our lives are busy and full of change. Keeping our priorities in order while maintaining focus and vision is a constant challenge. We live in a society that loves short cut techniques where there is no short cut, only a path based on principles revealed throughout history. A meaningful life is not a matter of speed and efficiency but what you do and why you do it - and we need to be reminded of this everyday. The best way is to take a few minutes of quiet time before the daily rush. Our hearts and minds need nourishment and this is the purpose of this book - to provide daily nourishment through the daily reading of wisdom literature that can have a profound effect on the quality of our daily decisions by keeping us focused on what is important and preventing us being swept away by urgency. Covey believes these little daily thoughts will help us do three things - to reconnect with our big ideas and the insights that accompanied learning them; to encourage us to take a little breathing space between events and our response - a space that reconnects us to our inner compass; and to garnish our wisdom literature habit. Mr. Covey & Mr. & Mrs. Merrill did a great job putting together this audiocassette recording of First Things First. The teachings contained within educate you on how to find a balance in your life, fulfillment, and how to become more effective. Teachings regarding the 4-quadrant time management theory help you find where you are putting most of your time, and how effective it is. The authors put time management in its proper place: revolving around what is important and of value to you. Principle-centered living and basing your mission upon those principles will assist you in life success. I was very encouraged, and only wished that I had bought the six-tape system (I listened to the four-tape system).

Some people on the reviews complained about the book not just being Covey talking...but if you notice the book is written by three people (yeah, Amazon only shows 2, but I have the book in front of me) The CD is a good highlight to explaining the basics to the First Things First principles. The cd says to get the book for using the meat and potatoes of the book...BUT there is also a 3 Disc set out there which is Unabriged and tells it all (for some reason I can't find it on Amazon...but have found it in searching around the net) So if you want the basics to remind yourself of what you are doing (Review regularly to make it a part of your life is a common self improvement strategy) is quicker than re-reading the book over and over... especially when given the gift of traffic to slow down and enjoy the CD.

I was dismayed to find that this audio book is simply a laundry listing (in an "advice o'the day" format) of tidbits of wisdom. The wisdom offered is good, mind you, but if you are looking for something to stimulate and entertain you (eg on a long car ride) you will likely be disappointed. I can only listen to about 4 or 5 tidbits before I lose interest.

The strength of the abridged audiocassette is the conviction in Dr. Covey's voice. It will convince you that this is an important subject.

The weakness of this audiocassette is that you will learn the principles behind Quadrant Two Time Management, but not how to do it. As the audiocassette will tell you, you will need to buy the book, study it, and then start doing it. I thought this was so substantial a weakness that I graded the book down two stars for this limitation.

If you are pretty sure you want to use this method, go directly to the book. If you are not sure, listen to this audiocassette. I found a copy in my local library. Perhaps you can, too.

The time management technique here is intended to be a fourth generation of that method of getting more accomplished. The main different is that the goals here are to achieve more balance in your life by having you focus first on doing what is most important to you that will make the most difference. You will plan weekly, and reiterate your planning to learn from your experiences of the prior week.

Quadrant 2 is the area where activities are important, but not urgent. These activities are often overlooked, or are pushed out of the way by urgent activities, including ones that are unimportant.

The time management process is designed to handle all elements of your life, personal life as well as work. An analogy is used to putting big rocks, gravel, sand, and water into a jar. If you start with the big rocks, you can get everything in the jar. If you start in the opposite order, you'll never fit the big rocks in.

You are encouraged to develop a personal mission statement (because seeing meaning to life gives us more optimism and perserverance), consider all of your life roles, locate the highest payoff areas for those roles, make principle-centered decisions, exercise integrity in your moments of choice, and continually reevaluate how you are doing.

After you listen to this work, consider how well balanced or unbalanced your life is. Then think about what your habits are that cause you to have such imbalances. Next, start changing those habits to better ones.

Despite some blatant entrepreneurial pitches for Chopra's Prana Institute and its products, as well some blatant abuse of quantum physics, and the annoying "I am young" manatra you will repeatedly be asked to mouth throughout the book in order to help change your psychological perception of age, GROW YOUNG, LIVE LONGER is a fine book that will indeed enhance health, and thus perhaps make you look and feel younger. It's one of those all-around good books: covering basic yoga, providing some good recipes, filled with wonder facts about detoxification, wise nutritional supplementation, and the benefits of proper sleep and exercise. And of course, Chopra outlines his universal philosophy of love, which I found inspiring. On the whole, I was deeply impressed with the book, and ended up buying copies for friends. Another book I highly recommend that will add to your healthly living arsenal is The Optimum Nutritional Bible by Patrick Holford. Unlike Chopra, Holford takes a purely nutritional stance, but his dietary suggestions have the power to increase intelligence, vitality and life-span. Now go eat your veggies!

Chopra and Simon offer 10 basic steps to living longer and feeling younger. The steps in of themselves are not complicated (drink water, sleep 8 hours, meditate, etc.), but putting them into practice is difficult for most of us.

I, for one, have a terrible sleep schedule, I drink coffee like a fiend, and I hardly look for activities that get me out of my daily hum-drum routine. But the fact of the matter is that I do these things unconsciously, and this book has motivated me to live a more conscious life and be more aware of how every choice I make affects my health for the better or worse.

You don't have to follow the book's plan to the letter, but learning more about healthy habits and adopting what works in your life can only help.

The Eades have been promoting a low carb lifestyle for many years. They have authored a number of books including Protein Power and The Protein Power LifePlan.

In their latest book, "The 30 Day Low-Carb Diet Solution", the Eades have simplified low carb living. They give easy to understand explanations as to why low carb eating is the solution for weight and health problems. They outline a 30 day eating program. Tips are given for what foods to eat and what to avoid.

They also include close to 100 recipes such as Hobo Pork Chops, Swiss Egg Casserole, Salmon in Tomato Tubs and more. Each recipe includes the carb and protein count.

Instead of complicated charts, easy self-aassessment quizzes are included to help you determine the portions of carbohydrate foods you can enjoy to reach your goals.

The book is laid out in a reader friendly format. Pick it up and start losing right away. No complicated science that can become overwhelming, just clear explanations that make sense.
Follow the 30 day food plan for exactly what to eat or interchange the meals.

I found the 30 day plan easy to follow and easy to stick with. As a carb lover, I thought it would be impossible to give up pasta and potatoes, but the easy-to-make breakfasts and dinners leave me feeling satisfied and hence, no sugar cravings. Not only did I (finally) lose weight after being disappointed with Weight Watchers and low-fat diets, but I'm eating healthier which is the crux of this book.

This is not the Atkins diet by the way. This is Low-Carb...not No-Carb, which is probably one of the reasons I find it so easy to stick with.

The recipe index is not very well organized, and the book has several editing errors, but other than that: The 30 day meal plan is good, which is why I bought it, but (like a lot of other books) meal plans should keep the user in mind. Most people on a M-F schedule would prefer the Power Smoothie and Yogurt Cup recipes on a workday and the more time intensive Veggie Frittata and Lighter-than-air-Pancakes on Saturday and Sunday.
I also like the fact that several of the lunch plans are leftovers from a dinner prepared a day or two before, however it is not consistent and you never know whether to prepare the stated # of servings (usually 4) because you'll need the leftovers or pare it down to 2 if cooking only for 2, because if it's not used in a follow up lunch, you are either wasting 2 servings or eating more than needed.
I also think the information at the top of each recipe which lists # of servings and carb and protein amounts, should also list preparation and cook times, so you don't get caught offguard fixing dinner only to find your dish needs to marinate for an hour or two.
Well I'm not getting a consulting fee, so I'll end my critique.

We had purchased and used Dr. Eades' previous book with great success. However, we lapsed into our old ways ang gained back our weight so we bought the 30-Day book. It's pretty good, but there are a lot of changes from the 1st book in menus. If you follow the book, you will lose the weight and improve your health. Some of our friends have done the same. The success is remarkable. I see that Dr. Atkins now allows some carbo's in his diet. We are also using his new book, "Atkins for Life." For variety, you may wish to buy some low carbo cookbooks. You really do have to make a permanent lifestyle change or the weight will come back on.

If you already understand and believe that eating low carb is the best way to loose weight and improve you health this is the book to get you started fast!

I already own their other books, I think the first Protein Power book is excellent, but there's a ton of details you have to read through to understand how your body works and why this diet is best. Many other authors have similar books with the same details, but their diets are different. I believe in PP most. It's easy to follow, not as strick as Atkins and who doesn't feel good about a married doctor couple writing about this new way to diet. Actually it's not at all new, Atkins came up with this diet 20 years ago. The 11/2002 Duke Univercity study has proven the diet safe and more effective than low fat diets, so low-carb is in the limelight again.

I was worried the book would be worthless for me since I have many other low-carb books, but it's an excellent quick read and get's you into the details of the diet fast. I will recommend this to all my friend that want to know how I lost 35 pounds in about 4 months (still working for more).

About half the book is text, the other half is menus and recipes. The menus are great for those that just want to follow a plan and not worry about menu planning. They are so well planned, they even built in use of leftovers the next day. All meals are interchangable so if you don't like a certain lunch, just sub with another. The recipes are very good and get you going. Many other cook books are available if you want more, but cooking low-carb and finding foods that may be new to you isn't always easy.
