Dr. Michael Roizen hopes to discover a cure for the common birthday. The author of the bestselling book RealAge and Oprah guru, Roizen translates groundbreaking medical research into a series of calculations and choices that promise to reduce age-linked symptoms and diseases. The RealAge Makeover begins with a self-test of 132 health factor questions that compare your calendar age with your "real age"--based on healthy habits plus heredity, he rounds up the usual suspects (sun exposure, sleep patterns, good fats) as well as the unusual (the kind of chocolate you eat, the number of nagging unfinished tasks, your catsup consumption). Although Roizen flags heredity, he focuses on the three key factors of aging: arteries (heart attack, stroke, memory loss), immune systems (prostrate and breast cancer), and environmental stresses (lung cancer, STDs). He offers a sliding scale of difficulty in his "younger every day suggestions." Whether talking about stress, diet, or disease, Roizen offers case examples and subtle and engaging strategies such as describing the role of living beyond your means in aging or the difference between "four-legged" and "no-leg fats."Readers looking for a quick fix will benefit less than those who follow the recommendations that require focus and commitment. As Baby Boomers age and books about turning back time increase, Roizen's will remain a standout. --Barbara Mackoff ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic!
As a new mom, I have more of a desire to live longer! And younger. This is what this book has allowed me to do. I actually took the test on since that seemed easiest and found myself to be 7 years older. Between the book and my personal recomendations from the Realage website I am getting younger every day. This is a MUST if you value your life and your family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling More Energetic
I have been following the RealAge recommendations for several years and have felt more energetic and healthier with each year. This new book has increased my awareness of what I need to do and of what I need to continue to do to live a healthier life, both now and for the long term. It's up-to-date information is very, very helpful.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing
My girlfriend read this book and it has really transformed her. I always liked older women, and she was very beautiful to start with, but after using this book's techniques she has become much younger looking and feels more healthy and alive to boot. The effects were as much as those that I gained after watching the "New Sex Now" dvd transformed our lovemaking. Go for these both!

5-0 out of 5 stars The technique in the book got me to quit smoking!!!
RealAge Makeover is a wonderful book. It has made my RealAge younger. It makes sense. It is a great book. Best one yet. ... Read more

    Book Description

The second edition of this thorough reference is an invaluable tool for assessing cosmetic products, addressing both the quality of the product and the effect it has on the skin. Since a product's ultimate purpose is to benefit the skin, it is crucial to have an understanding of how the skin works, how and why a product may or may not penetrate it, and what care individual skin types and conditions may require. It is difficult to discuss product ingredients without correlating product performance to skin function. An expanded section on skin physiology and chemical concepts enables the reader to better understand product performance through a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact. The various skin types, conditions, and appropriate ingredients for treatments provide a quick reference to address clients' needs. This enlarged second edition contains over 2,000 ingredients including 200 new and updated entries. Expanded information on antioxidants and their stability, new discussion on aging and sensitive skin, and function of SPF and new sunblock ingredients offering full spectrum sunscreen and sunblock for both UVA and UVB rays has been added. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best reference book on cosmetics ingredients
Let me tell you, this book is worth every dollar, do not be scared off by the price! Over 2,000 ingredients reviewed in an easy to comprehend way, you don't have to be an expert in chemistry to find out what exactly is in your favourite cream - effective ingredients or just pore-clogging chemicals, preservatives and irritants! There are also 3 chapters on skin physiology, product penetration and skin types and conditions. I would highly recommend this book for consumers, cosmetics sales people and estheticians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonder about all those ingredients? Milady has the answer!
As a former aesthetician and current president of a vitamin and nutritional company I am well accustomed to using chemical, pharmaceutical, and medical reference books for formulary research and scientific information. Most of these books are extremely technical and difficult to understand. Milady's Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary is the exception.

Milady offers one of the most comprehensive and easy-to-use guides to understanding what is in every bottle of cream or cosmetic item that you use.

This book will allow you to make informed decisions about what skincare products to buy and most importantly what each ingredient REALLY does, along with any negative side-effects. Whenever we begin formulating a new product, we always consult

5-0 out of 5 stars Do you know what you REALLY cleanse your face with?
An EXCEPTIONAL reference books / ingredient dictionary!
Have you ever wondered what those ingredients in your cleanser or make-up REALLY were? Now you can find out.

This comprehensive book not only includes an extensive list of ingredients and their uses/definitions & more...

(AN EXAMPLE: "linoleic acid (vitamin F) - an emulsifier. ...prevents dryness and roughness. A deficiency in linoleic acid in the skin is associated with symptoms similar to to those characterizing in eczema, psoriasis and a generally poor skin condition. an essential fatty acid found in a variety of plant oils, including soybean and sunflower." )

...but the book also includes a chapter on skin types, conditions and appropriate ingredients for treatment that would provide a quick reference so address your (or your clients skin care needs), a thorough explanation of how chemicals and ingredients interact in cosmetics and more!

I HIGHLY recommend this book to skin care professionals and beauty connoseurs that want to know the "insider secrets".
I will never go a day of work (as an aesthetician) without this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Milady's Skin Care and Cosmetic Ingredients Dictionary
I have recently completed a course in Esthetics and have found the book to be helpful by changing technical terms and information into easily understood definitions and uses. The book is written by the same publisher as the text book that I studied from and found it to be easy reading and understandable. I would compare it to A Consumers Dictionary of Cosmetic Indegredients by Ruth Winter. Both are excellent reference books but I feel that Milady's uses general terms and applies to the break down of the product indegredients used in skin care and not just make-up application. I would highly recommend this book to skin care professionals. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This is the book my Cosmetology School uses (2000 edition)
I bought the 1996 version of this book in June of 2000 and within one month I was signed up for cosmetology school. Then I got to school and they used the 2000 edition so I was already prepared. For those who think this book doesn't go into detail please realize that this is a textbook and it is part of a series of books for teaching. There are 2 workbooks that go along with this book. One for Theory and one for Practical. I was given a 1990 edition of this book as well by a friend of mine. The most noticable change between the 3 editions is that the 2000 edition has more actual photographs and fewer illustrations. If you are using this book for school study then I do recommend you buy the state board exam review booklet. Then when you have free time you can quiz yourself. Just remember that this book is meant to be used along with an instructor. If you are looking for a haircutting book only then I don't think you want this one. It only has about 12 pictures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Detailed
When I was taking Cosmetology back in the 2000-01 school year, they recommended to purchase this version of Milady's Standard Textbook of Cosmetology. They were only available new in Canada and cost [money], and came with the theory book as well. Our teacher also had the old 1996 version of this textbook for sale, used. However, this is a better purchase. There are more pictures and colors, its not as drab as the previous version. I have to disagree with reviewers who said this is not a detailed book, I found it to be quite detailed and informative in its information. The book meant to be used in a classroom setting, where an instructor teachers and elaborates from this book. You cannot read this book and automatically cut hair, that is where the practical aspect of cosmetology comes in, when you are doing it hands on instead of reading. But this is a helpful tool for aspiring apprentices or students in cosmetology, whether you want to learn about Coloring, Perms, whatever the case, this is definately a worthwhile tool to have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and informative!
I'm the mom to 3 (4,3, and 6 mos.) and had let myself go, was discouraged about my appearance. I really wanted to turn myself around, in health, weight and appearance. My hubby decreed 2004 the "year of mommy's makeover" and made this one of my Xmas presents (he found it himself). I was a bit skeptical, but once I read it, I was hooked. While I've worn makeup on and off for years, I learned a lot. The chapter on foundation, concealer and powder was worth the book - I finally have a clue how to use concealer properly! Also loved the chapter on eyes and learned how to use eyeliner in a natural way. She has a lot of little tricks of the trade that help when applying makeup (and now seem obvious after reading them!). I'm having a lot of fun playing and trying different products. I also loved the section with the magazine editors - it was great to hear from beauty experts who look at gorgeous women all day. Their views were really neat. I love her attitude about what beauty is, because I feel the same way. It's great to know you don't need to wear 50 products and spend two hours a day to look good. I don't want to be a supermodel, I just want to look more polished and feel better about me, and this book was a great help.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really is a real beauty...
I love this book! I checked it out of the library to see if I wanted to buy it and I'm completely sold... The photos are gorgeous, the book is informative and the dvd is awesome.

Alot of people are complaining about the book not explaining everything step-by-step, but that's what the dvd is for. It's sometimes hard to read instructions or to look at a photo and see if you're doing it right. If you watch the different sections after reading each chapter, you can watch exactly how she does everything.

The book goes in depth, contains all the information, has step by step instructions (just not photos for them), lists all the supplies and even explains how beauty is not just skin deep. Apart from the makeup and nail sections, there are sections on skin care, teeth, eating healthy, fitness and just caring for yourself in general. The dvd shows you how to put all your new found knowlege to use. I especially loved the concealer part... I realized that models have blemishes, too. It's just that they can find a makeup artist to make them 'disappear'!

I'm definitely going to buy this set and another one for my sister. I'd recommend it to anyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars stop looking- you found the how to make-up book!
I read the other reviews and do not agree with the negative ones. I never was taught how to use foundation, loose powder, concealer, etc. After reading this book and watching the included dvd, I completely understand how to use makeup and how to apply it. The dvd included clears up any questions raised in the book (for example- how to use foundation around the lipline before applying lipliner.)I have the bobbi brown books which give some good tips, but Sonia's way is much more approachable and helps you not to be intimidated by the cosmetic counter! She explains in her dvd how to hold makeup brushes, explains why you'd use powder vs cream blush, etc. I Her line at Target is pretty great too if you're looking for a line of make-up, but you don't need to use her line to get all the benefits from this book. Give it a try!

1-0 out of 5 stars Not at all like it was decribed..
This book is written by Sonia on how great Sonia is. If you are looking for a step by step instruction on how to do your makeup...this is not the book for you.

2-0 out of 5 stars All photos, not much substance
Much like so many other books out there, it's a lot of beautiful photos but no illustration on techniques or charts. It seems like there is a ocean of makeup coffee table books aout there but hardly any true 'how-to" books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting, But Does It Work For Most Women?
As a former trainer in NLP for 7 years I've always been impressed with how effective these techniques are for creating internal change (habits, behaviors, disciplines, overcoming fears, sales, etc.)

But the ability to create change in other people (like getting a man to fall in love with you) is something that I believe from my experience in the field almost no one can achieve on their own with NLP.

I wrote my fishy relationship/self-help book because I saw how different the real works as opposed to the NLP-seminar-John Gray-Tony Robbins models. That experience came from dating in Southern California and going on a lot of cruises and Club Med vacations.

What I found is that people who try to use NLP techniques come across as being weird. It also has a strange way of messing with the natural karma of love. For whatever reason, when you try to get someone else to fall in love with you through an organized skill set like this, it has a way of ruining the magic for yourself.

What is important to know from Tracy's book are the general concepts of sensory acuity and anchoring. Sensory acuity comes in handy when you recognize when you get an instant negative reaction (like bad breath, body odor, unappealing voice, talk too fast, talk too loud, talk too slow, talk too much). These things cause a person to be out of rapport. Which means an unconscious bad first impression.

Anchoring has to do with creating stirring memories or special moments. This book is about the mechanics of creating those moments which is all right, but the average person needs to feel it come naturally from within.

If a woman really wants to know how to get a man to fall in love, she must first maximize her own feminine allure (Being a Woman by Dr. Toni Grant) and then make her contacts and develop relationships. Dr. Cabot's work will help you with identifying technical mistakes, but not some much about having more to give (variety, intensity, heart), cleansing the spirit, and understanding and appreciating a love partner.

As an author, NLP trainer, and semi-relationship expert, I think that this book addresses the 20% of mechanics when it's done right (a very difficult task without years of training and integration...not just in a simple reading of a book!) But what most people really need is the 80% of how loving relationships work from within on the emotional-spiritual world.

My advice here is to enjoy this book and become more aware of instant triggers, but don't get carried away and become a weirdo!

    Weirdness spooks men away quickly!

Remember that love is far more spiritual than mechanical.

1-0 out of 5 stars bad, bad advice...
I read this book and "landed" my ex-husband by doing the "mirroring" technique. The result was I pretended to be someone I wasn't and compromised far too much for an abusive, scary man. I'm no psychiatrist but you shouldn't have to "make" or "trick" someone into loving nullifies the entire point of finding love to begin with. Love yourself first and find someone kind, thoughtful, considerate who loves you for yourself. You don't need this crap-ola book. It nearly ruined my life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dangerous in the Hands of Amateurs
Between this book and David Gibbons' "Love Signals" you have a very powerful arsenault. After years of dating, I read these two books and began to use the suggestions at work and play. I did better at work and I managed to find a great guy who I have now been married to for over 18 years. The book suggests that you try to determine what "language" the prospective "husband" uses in his life to communicate. Is he audial? Responds to sounds. Visual? Tends to learn by viewing, or is able to think spatially like an architect or engineer? Or is he a touchy, feely guy who learns through feelings and touching or manipulating things like a mechanic. Once you identify this, the book teaches you how to communicate in his language style. In addition, it teaches you how to act in a relationship similar to "The Rules" only this book predated "The Rules" and has more concrete information. Enjoy it, but don't use the techniques lightly, they can be highly manipulative.

4-0 out of 5 stars Love by Design a Fragile Ornament
For any man a woman would want to be married to, or any woman a man would want to be married to, there is no such thing as "making someone fall in love with you." Love is either recognizable or not, based upon the attentiveness and treatment that accompanies the territory of love, a person's understanding of it, and willingness to make a commitment to it for their own sake to provide the pleasure of loving, as well as receiving love. Love induced, or forced, is rarely a love that has he ability to satisfy the inner most reaches of the heart that are protected from ordinary trampling, and reserved for those special persons who have the ability to awaken its vitality and momentum. Otherwise we'd all be promiscuous and compromising of our greatest value, the ability to have one special person see us as unique enough to create the attachment that equals the glory of love. Ornaments come and go, by fad, but love lingers in the heart, the mind, and the soul where it resides unfettered by the typical offences that would tarnish it, rendering it an ordinary relationship of little difference than a friendship. That's why it is called love and demands so much of us, as if testing the mettle of all who would claim the intricacy of its devine blessings. Deciding which is love and which is not is among the hardest and most difficult of the tasks engaged by mankind, in any language. What people know for sure is that it is not mere sexual attraction, and is not meant to reside in mere availability. Real love is real work that requires real and intense effort by both to send the smoke signals that constitute its possibility and its potential. Rarely is it for the timid, and rarely do we enter it without timidity!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Working Plan
The book works. It proviedes the reader with a working plan to develop an intimate relationship with a significant other. I used the plan on some unworthy "test" subjects and found them hard to get rid of. When it came time for me to use it on the man I deemed man of my dreams... it worked! I am now happily married to a great guy. Even though, this is my second marriage and I came with a bunch of kids... he loved me and wanted to have a lifelong committment with me. ... Read more

    Book Description

Curly girls of the world unite! Sixty-five percent of women have naturally curly hair, but for too long too many of these women have either been at a loss on how to care for their hair properly or, worse, have gone through life pretending they have straight hair. No more. Lorraine Massey, a professional hairstylist and passionate proponent of curly hair, celebrates the curly girl way of life, from hair care to carefree attitude.

Beginning with The Curly Girl's Twelve-Step Program (Step Three: I will accept that the scalp and hair are two different entities with completely different needs, and I will treat them accordingly), CURLY GIRL is an illustrated how-to, support group, and tongue-in-cheek manifesto all in one.

There are tips on shampoo (never daily), conditioners (use lots), drying, combing (only when wet and well-conditioned), styling, getting the right cut, and how to Heal Thy Hair after years of strong detergents and damaging blow-dryers. There are before-and-after photographs, Curly Cues, self-help tests, confessions from curly girls, advice to take to your stylist. And for girls seeking their inner curl, compassion and encouragement to let their hair break free-and to put the fear of frizz behind them forever.

Because from now on there's no such thing as a bad hair day. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars worth reading; mixed success for me
I bought this after reading reviews here and have had mixed success. First I want to address the reviews that stated many of the curly models in the book don't look that great: you're right. However. (1) The curly models look much better than most of us curl-fighters look on a average (hurry-the-blow-dry, go-out-in-bad-weather, give-up-and-ponytail-it) day, and (2) the models don't look like they were given a lot of professional makeup or lighting for the photos, which makes them look like (merely) nice-looking normal people with curly hair. In other words, we're so used to looking at impossibly gorgeous, professionally styled, lighted, airbrushed, straight-haired models that a photo of a nice-looking normal curly-haired person looks bad to us. Yikes.

Anyway, about the program: using conditioner instead of shampoo is working fine (as long as you follow the insructions to use your fingertips to scrub your scalp....this is what gets it clean....don't just glop on the conditioner and rinse), as is combing gently with fingers, drying gently, etc. I have to say when I follow the instructions my curls look better than they have in a long time.

So what's the problem? (1) who has time to sit around for 2 hours waiting for her curly hair to dry in perfect ringlets? (The 1 hour cited in the book is not enough time.) Blow-drying with a diffuser is OK, but my fine, weak botticelli curls get frizzed and stretched. (2) who has time to do this every morning? (When I wake up my hair is flat bumpy frizz....I have to wet it completely to get the curls to come back....then wait 2 hours for it to dry again. Also, the curls often droop and flatten before the end of the day...ponytail time again.) In contrast, I can straighten my hair extremely well in less than an hour and it can last for 2-3 days. True, straightening is bad for my hair, I don't always do a great job of it, and it doesn't always last that long, but I'm still not sure curls are worth the trade-off of wetting and drying every morning.

Finally, I have to admit I just don't like the way I look with curly hair all the time. Sometimes I like it, but other times I want a sleeker more professional look. I also feel that smooth hair softens my features and makes me look prettier....albeit a boring cookie-cutter mainstream kind of prettier. I did get some compliments on the curls, but one of them was "I've always liked wild hair on women." I'm not wild, and I rarely want to look wild. I guess Massey would say that if all curly women wore their curls proudly then the stereotypes would eventually change.

Definitely worth a read, very easy to read, some very useful information.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my life!
I have always loved my curls but I used to wish for smoother hair since mine was sooooooo frizzy. I thought extra gel was the answer, but then my hair looked like dry ramen noodles (you could get hurt my hair was so crispy). After reading this book and realizing that shampoo was my foe, my hair has changed completely! It's shiny, soft, frizz-free even in the most humid weather. I especially liked the cleansing recipes the author includes to get rid of product buildup, they are safe and don't dry out my curls. I also paid close attention to her suggestion of using wheat germ conditioner and it works great! I have never been happier and I have started buying copies for all my curly haired family and friends.

For years I have hated my curly, full of tangles hair. Brushing it was painfull, getting braids was torture (plus my hair would break off in clumps), relaxers destroyed my hair (making it brittle). I've been natural for 4 years and frustrated. Just as I was considering shaving it all off I came across this book. Had to get used to the "no shampoo" part. My hair has NEVER looked this good. I have confidence now that was not before, because I was ashamed of my hair. Have gotten so many compliments, and questions as to what I do to get my hair to look the way it does, even my mother(who has straight hair) likes it, even asks me "Can I touch it?" Now all I need is a stylist that cuts curly hair. Best book for curly hair, and fun to read many times over.

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, Something that works!
My hair has always been difficult. Not always curly, but more than wavy, and always tempermental. On a friends advice, I bought Lorraine Massey's CURLY GIRL book. Wow!!! I finally know how to deal with my hair. The book is down to earth and user friendly. The advice seems strange (using only conditioner to cleanse your hair, never brushing/combing...) but it made all the difference. My hair is finally able to figure out what it wants to do (it wants to curl in loose corkscrews and waves) and I get frequent compliments. I was skeptical of the conditioner only cleansing, but my hair feels clean, smells clean, and looks great.
I would also like to mention that one thing I appreciate about the book is the lack of marketing for overpriced, multiple step hair care systems. She is not selling anything other than salvation for curly girls!

5-0 out of 5 stars CURLY IN COLUMBIA
Almost a year since I have shampooed, SAVED HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS AND FINALLY received the results I'd been searching for. The book has paid me back ten times over in the one year!

Thanks to this book I finally understand my curly hair and work with it instead of against it. The wonderful thing about the book is you don't have to purchase her products, lots of 'recipes' for home treatments. I am completely hooked on misting every morning with a mixture of about 4 oz water to two-three drops of natural essence lavendar oil (purchased anywhere), and I don't boil the water. My husband LOVES the subtle scent and my hair always feels soft and smells fresh .... despite the fact I only 'CONDITION' (clean) my hair ONCE a week!!!! I also found the "Curl on Que" gel products at Bath and Body Works work well, esp. the spray, it stays soft and defines the curls. My hair is shoulder length and it is absolutely necessary to use a huge amount of a quality conditioner, thoroughly massage into scalp, leave on, and I DON'T rinse it totally out.

I was a skeptic, but I could see and FEEL the change immediately and it has just gotten better and better. Even if ALL the suggestions don't work for your hair, there's still valuable information EVERY Curly Girl should know and great style suggestions.

Healthy, vibrant skin depends more on what you put in your cheeks than what you rub on them, says dermatologist Nicholas Perricone. In The Perricone Prescription, fresh salmon tops the list of must-eat foods for total body rejuvenation. In fact, it is the star of Perricone's "Three-Day Nutritional Face-Lift," a convincing trial run for those who are a bit hedgy about committing to his 28-day diet and his supplement, skin care, and exercise regimen.

Perricone's clear explanation about the adverse effects of inflammatory foods persuasively argues for shunning destructive, low-fat favorites (including watermelon, carrots, and bagels) and "culinary horrors" like pizza, pasta, and beef. Better to eat anti-inflammatory choices (those with a glycemic index of 50 or less) like salmon, halibut, and trout. While the book's mega list of recommended supplements is a bit hard to swallow (literally and figuratively), the supportive information Perricone supplies about each is certainly helpful.

Another detailed grocery list--this time for topical anti-inflammatories--addresses skin care, and his wrinkle-free fitness plan promotes flexibility, muscle strength, and endurance. Finally, a handful of savory recipes offers respite to those who only know how to broil. So, despite all the salmon (and the angry kids whose parents have purged their high-glycemic kitchens), Perricone's prescription doesn't sound fishy at all. --Liane Emory Thomas ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Perricone Prescription
Perricone (The Wrinkle Cure), a professor of dermatology at Yale Medical School, believes that relatively simple changes in eating can effect dramatic changes in physical appearance and well-being. He has created a month-long program broken up into daily menus as well as a more restrictive three-day regimen designed to produce immediate results. Perricone's guiding principle, which he explains in some depth, is to reduce inflammation at the cellular level, which, he believes, causes the skin to age and is also linked to degenerative disease. Perricone suggests that protein and some fat is essential for everyone. He is particularly keen on the benefits of fish. Certain foods high in carbohydrates cereals, breads, bananas are taboo in this plan because of their high glycemic index; they cause a spike in blood sugar and prompt the body's insulin response, which stores rather than burns fat and causes inflammation. Perricone also recommends an exercise regimen, and nearly a third of the book is devoted to a discussion of antioxidants, vitamin supplements and creams. Some may question his nutritional theories, and others may find the diet difficult to stick to, with its almost total restriction of starchy foods. Still, Perricone is a proponent of Barry Sears's The Zone, and readers who have followed that book and Perricone's own bestselling earlier volume will probably appreciate this one. (Aug.) Forecast: Given the author's track record with his previous book, there's little doubt that this one will hit the lists especially with the help of media attention and the summer publication, when many people are suffering from the effects of too much sun.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fringe Benefits!
While the focus of The Perricone Prescription is anti-aging, I derived a fringe benefit from it...weight loss! I tend to believe that this result was produced not only by the physiological regimen, but by a psychological effect. Most "weight loss" books place all their emphasis on the desired goal, i.e., weight loss. We try too hard and are at times discouraged when we don't achieve the desired results. With The Perricone Prescription, the focus is shifted to improving your skin, so the pressure to lose weight is not there. Not only has my skin improved, I've lost weight and have kept it off.

Not only does this book deliver sound nutritional advice, it is effective on many levels. I have had a lifelong battle with weight and nothing has worked. This book was an epiphany for me because it details the science of how our bodies (skin included) react to foods and supplements. I must admit that the advice was easy for me to follow since I love fish, particularly salmon, and since I have a Mediterranean heritage, my diet has always included olives, olive oil, and seafood. Getting rid of the high glycemic foods, though, permitted me to turn the corner. NO ONE ever guesses my correct age...everyone thinks I'm at least 10 years younger than I am.

I highly recommend this book...sound medical advice from a renowned dermatologist. How can you go wrong?

3-0 out of 5 stars Get a healthy glow in 3 days.
This book is pretty much about eating clean, low glycemic carbs and healthy fats. Too many of the wrong foods (bad carbs, salt, sugar) cause inflammation (insulin spike) and cause tissues to become irritated (hold water, puffiness). After following the Three-Day Nutritional Face Lift Menu(without the supplements) my face isn't puffy when I wake, my eyes aren't bloodshot and my skin is J.Lo luminious.

LOTS of supplements are prescribed which to "make it easy for you..." he sells overpriced supplements on his website at the hefty price tag of $195 for 45 days.

This is a good diet to follow if you are do Body-for-LIFE, South Beach or Atkins. I can't argue that its a bad plan. The recipes are very simple, clean and delicious. Can get expensive, but if you live near a Trader Joe's you shouldn't have too much of a problem.

The program can easily be summed up below -- he posts this on his website. Or try the version which is very simple to follow.

    The Three-Day Menu
You will be eating close to the same thing each day. Remember to always eat your protein first. Though this diet has some variety, a restricted diet is often easier to handle since you are not confronted by too many choices.

2-0 out of 5 stars Is Farmed Salmon Safe to eat?
The problem with this diet is that Dr. Perricone recommends you eat only wild salmon. I had to ask myself right away what's wrong with eating farmed salmon and why won't Dr. Perricone recommend eating it as an alternative? With all the wild salmon you're supposed to eat, this diet gets very cost prohibitive very fast.

If consumers knew what was in farmed salmon they might think twice about eating it more than once a month. Recent studies show that farmed salmon bought at markets on the East and West coasts were found to be contaminated with PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, at an average level far higher than any other protein source, including other seafood. PCBs are insidious and have been identified as probable human carcinogens.

This diet works as long as you can afford to eat wild salmon numerous times a week. The consumer friendly alternative is the L.A. Shape Diet - it even recommends some of the same supplements. I have had great results by combining the L.A. shape diet with Perricone's recommended supplements and lotions. Just get smart and find the discount versions of Perricone's brands to get the benefit of great skin without dropping a lot of cash.

5-0 out of 5 stars The doctorsecret is now out.
    Hi fellow antiWrinkle and antiagers!
I wrote this before on a different book review. The book is really a good menu or instruction set. It is written well and very enlightning. I'm sure it was made to promote his products but I found several websites that sell the stuff at a better price. or even ebay. The process is the best one written so far. I often hear I look 10-15 years younger. At this rate I'll be 16 again soon. Dr Perricone is handsome and intelligent, that helps in the selling. The Glycolic acid treatment proceedure or Serum CEster described are the best.
Thanks and good luck. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It's a MUST HAVE for anyone who loves the art of makeup!
I bought this book skeptically after hearing from a friend how helpful it was in describing techniques. The georgeous photos would have sold it for me anyhow, but Aucoin's 'Making Faces' actually taught me how to do makeup. I've always done the same thing...which was basically go natural or play with makeup till I looked like a clown then scrub it all off. It's a simple approach that is easily accessible. The book makes doing eyebrow shaping look easy...and it not only looks easy- by following a few steps it turns out it IS easy. If you want to learn the basics- buy this book. If you want to do a home makeover- go glamorous, sensual, then fun later on - buy this book. If you want to tune your look a bit- get it! I guess I don't have to go on, but if you are like me and need a bit of instruction and cant afford a makeup artist to be at your beckon call- buy this book. At least borrow it from a friend. It's one of the books you'll consistently turn to for tips and tricks. It's an excellent resource and a whole lot of fun. The photos and styles cover all ages, from young and cute teenage to mature sophisticated and sexy women to a really hot guy in drag (double take is an understatement). Aucoin not only uses "Stars" but also 'real' people (meaning their looks aren't a direct part of their job) in showing the techniques and how they cause such transformations.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great inspiration!
This book is a great addition to your bedroom bookshelf. You may not use it every day, but it's there when you need it. Mr. Aucoin shows you how you can transform yourself with makeup. He uses before/after photos and tells you what each of his models (young, old, black, white, asian, even men) should focus on.

Many of us have the tried & true, day-in/day-out routine. This book gives you some great ideas on how to break out of the mundane and add some variety and interest into your makeup.

His ability to turn celebrities like Lisa Marie Presley, Julia Roberts, Gwyneth Paltrow and others into completely different looking people should inspire any reader to try something new.

In a fit of desperation, before a formal event, I grabbed this book for some ideas. I dug around my makeup collection and found the ingredients to try one of his looks. With his step-by-step directions & illustrations, I was able to totally recreate a more engaging treatment. When my boyfriend picked my up, he looked at me with this surprised look in his eyes. "I can tell by your face; you hate my makeup don't you?" I said. "No. Not at all, it's just so different. So Sexy." He responded.

    'Nuff said.

5-0 out of 5 stars SO COOL!
I absolutely adore this book. I have his other book, Face Forward and I love them. This man knows how to do the best makeup in the biz! I even copied a look in this book on a friend. In this book, there are before and after pictures of everyday people that really show how you can make a huge difference, with just some strategically placed cosmetics. This book is also good for anyone who would perform on a stage. Check it out, you won't regret it.

5-0 out of 5 stars perhaps his best
out of all of Kevyn's make up books I consider this one his best because it is the most basic. it gives the reader lots of background about his childhood and his close relationship with his sister. Kevyn passed away a year ago suddenly... but through this book we are all able to see what a caring, creative and generous man he was. Not only is it an ennjoyable read, (his stories are always heartwarming) but also a very useful and easy to read guide on the complex world of beauty.

4-0 out of 5 stars My favorite how-to, with a ton of ideas and tips.
With this book, you get introduced to makeup and how it works. Then, you get information on what to use it with and how to apply it, featuring illustrated guides and photo shoot examples. Kevin basically lets you know just about everything that can be done with the complexion, eyebrows, eyes, eyelashes, cheeks and lips.

Some of the instruction is advanced - for example, it explains how to cover your eyebrows completely, and draw new ones on. But most of it is for regular lighting and normal life. There are more tricks and ideas in here than any magazine you've ever read. Kevin was one of Hollywood's best and I'm glad he revealed his secrets and techniques for others to use, before he died.

I'm not giving this book 5 stars, because there's something important that a reader can't gain by reading the book -- skills with practice. The information is only good for people who get good at using it. ... Read more

For women seeking complexion perfection, Dr. Nicholas Perricone is the name to know; actress Courteney Cox counts herself among his many devotees. In The Perricone Promise, he claims that his 28-day program will help stop and even reverse the aging process, making anyone who follows his advice "look and feel ten years younger." Perricone says the brain and the skin both start out as the same embryonic tissue, so it follows that any efforts aimed at improving one's complexion will also improve one's memory and overall sense of well-being.

To this end, he recommends a three-pronged approach: a very specific 28-day diet; supplements taken morning, noon, and night; and his own line of "topical" cosmetics, all aimed at boosting the body's levels of "peptides and neuropeptides." These substances, according to Perricone, are not only the building blocks of the skin's collagen, but an integral part of the functioning of the immune system, and may prevent inflammation in the body that's associated with such illnesses as arthritis and heart disease.

Perricone's diet sensibly includes a "rainbow" of fruits and vegetables and the liberal use of herbs and spices, and shuns any foods browned or cooked at high temperatures. But unfortunately, some of the food combinations sound less than appetizing (typical snack: "1-2 ounces sliced turkey or chicken breast, 3 olives, 3 strawberries, 8 ounces water"). His eponymous supplements and cosmetics are also pretty pricey, but as far as Perricone's fans are concerned, when it comes to putting the brakes on the aging process, you get what you pay for. --Erica Jorgensen ... Alan Flusser's name is synonymous with taste and style. With his new book, he combines his encyclopedic knowledge of men's clothes with his signature wit and elegance to address the fundamental paradox of modern men's fashion: Why, after men today have spent more money on clothes than in any other period of history, are there fewer well-dressed men than at any time ever before?

According to Flusser, dressing well is not all that difficult, the real challenge lies in being able to acquire the right personalized instruction. Dressing well pivots on two pillars -- proportion and color. Flusser believes that "Permanent Fashionability," both his promise and goal for the reader, starts by being accountable to a personal set of physical trademarks and not to any kind of random, seasonally served-up collection of fashion flashes.

Unlike fashion, which is obliged to change each season, the face's shape, the neck's height, the shoulder's width, the arm's length, the torso's structure, and the foot's size remain fairly constant over time. Once a man learns how to adapt the fundamentals of permanent fashion to his physique and complexion, he's halfway home.

Taking the reader through each major clothing classification step-by-step, this user-friendly guide helps you apply your own specifics to a series of dressing options, from business casual and formalwear to pattern-on-pattern coordination, or how to choose the most flattering clothing silhouette for your body type and shirt collar for your face.

A man's physical traits represent his individual road map, and the quickest route toward forging an enduring style of dress is through exposure to the legendary practitioners of this rare masculine art. Flusser has assembled the largest andmost diverse collection of stylishly mantled men ever found in one book. Many never-before-seen vintage photographs from the era of Cary Grant, Tyrone Power, and Fred Astaire are employed to help illustrate the range and diversity of authentic men's fashion. Dressing the Man's sheer magnitude of options will enable the reader to expand both the grammar and verbiage of his permanent-fashion vocabulary.

For those men hoping to find sartorial fulfillment somewhere down the road, tethering their journey to the mind-set of permanent fashion will deliver them earlier rather than later in life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Timeless Style
For me the most interesting parts of this book were the historical photographs. It made me realize what an impoverished age we live in. It showed not that men were slaves to a fashion but rather that elegance can still allow for a lot of personal choice. The comparison to some of what passes for style today is striking. It is also rather timely, in that business casual is rapidly dying and many companies have raised the expectations for dress back to the pre casual days. I found the book an excellent guide both on a practical level as well as providing detailed historical analysis. I loaned the book to a tailor whose has been in the business for 50 years and he was very impressed with the detail and advice. Overall this book was an excellent investment.

4-0 out of 5 stars ALMOST perfect
I say ALMOST perfect for it has 2 major flaws. But first let me get to the good stuff: a lavish volume full of wonderful vintage photos, illustrations and well-written advice covering color, proportions, patterns, suits, odd jackets, trousers, waistcoats, dress shirts, neckwear, hosiery, shoes, accessorites, formalwear, and business casual. This volume won't age as you do as you refer to it again and again over the years. However, this book has two puzzling flaws: the chapter entitled THE POWER OF COLOR, while necessary, simply is lacking in content and the color photos DO NOT fit in with the rest of the artwork contained in the volume. In fact the photos cheapen this otherwise superb book. This goes for the BUSINESS CASUAL chapter as well: it seems lifted out of another book of lesser quality and inserted into this one. This book probably isn't for the man just out of college, the man for whom a pair of khakis is dressing up, nor the man who considers J Crew to be height of fashion but highly recommended for the man ready to upgrade his appearance.

5-0 out of 5 stars True to the Twin Pivots: Proportion and Color
As a web developer, I have recently had a run of men's custom tailoring customers. I found myself looking for an encyclopedic source of styling details and fashion fundamentals.

In my mind the name Alan Flusser is synonymous with taste and style. This book gave me everything I needed to build websites designed to appeal to the male buyer of custom suits and shirts. Unlike the fashion buyer, Flusser believes permanent fashion starts with being accountable to a personal set of physical characteristics.

The custom buyer's face's shape, neck's height, shoulder's width, arm's length and torso's structure, and the foot's size remain relatively constant. Once he relates the permanent fashion's fundamentals to his physique and complexion, he is on his way to building a stylish, cost-effective wardrobe that will withstand fashion's seasonable vagaries.

This book contains a large collection of photographs of stylish men. These vintage photographs illustrate the range and diversity of authentic men's fashion. Along the way, magnitude of options will equip the reader with both the vocabulary and options required to build a custom wardrobe. There is even a glossary at the end of the book to help with the journey.

My needs were unique, I admit. This book equipped me with the knowledge, detail and options required to build a website that appeals to buyers and the purveyors of custom men's clothing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Helps organize men's fashion
When it comes to fashion, most men get nervous. Of course everybody wants to look nice, but isn't it complicated to know how to look good?

That's where I found this book to be especially helpful. Flusser's main point is that most of the elements of good style haven't really changed much at all in the last 75 years or so. Flusser asserts that the main goal of men's attire is to frame the body in order to display the man's face.

A great aspect about the book is that you only need to remember the "rules" for your specific skin tone/height/proportions. For instance, a man with gray/silver hair should wear silver/gray in his attire to properly frame his face, etc. Flusser also is very clear about how clothes should properly fit you, which is helpful when you are trying things on.

The illustrations and photographs (both new and classic) are remarkably well done and effectively portray Flusser's points (both good and bad examples). Other reviews here have pointed out some of the "doctoring" of the photos in some instances. I do see evidence of this, but I do not think it is really a substantive beef of the book.

Flusser's book certainly has some shortcomings. It mainly focuses on the men's suit and typical business dress. Although it does have a chapter on more casual dress (and the formal tuxedo), it is a small part of the book.

This is a great book for the man who wants to look nice. It covers a lot of details, from tying a tie properly to folding a handkerchief to wearing a tie clip. It's probably not for you if you wear jeans to work every day and only wear a suit two times a year.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide to Style--Poor section on color coordination
Flusser does a great job outlining the classical 1930's style of dressing that is the standard for well-dressed men in the US and Britain. His work is the definitive one, and his prose is interesting. The pictures are outstanding.

A couple shortcomings that caused me to rate it a 4--first, his section on color coordination is far too brief, although he does give the principles or coordinating color with hair, skin, eyes, etc. This is something that is usually overlooked in the mass of details on this subject in other fashion books. Second, some key points are hidden in his eloquent sentences while they would be more accessible if they were bullet-pointed. For example, I didn't realize that a dinner jacket should have one button, although I had read his section on the topic fairly carefully. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT!
Not only is this book greatly entertaining and informative, but it also serves as a most effective means of communication between husbands and wives: Ladies, dog-ear those pages which contain the advice and frank disclosures you never dared to share with your struggling honey! It is ALL hilarious, clever, and so damn HELPFUL! Boreth has certainly done us a great service, contributing this reference for all of the fellas who know not how to apologize, buy a diamond, nor minimize the auditory impact of an errant gaseous expletion.A perfect gift for husbands, brothers, best friends, and their groomsmen.

4-0 out of 5 stars The Gag Gift That Isn't
It looks like one of those books you'd find in Urban Outfitters in the gag gift section:You know, the type that is interesting for about 2 minutes. But it lasts beyond that and really does have some interesting tips.I left it around the house and pick it up to read a chapter every once in a while. It's funny, clever, and educational.

5-0 out of 5 stars How to Write a Damn Funny Book
"How to Iron your own Damn Shirt" is a great read. In general, it is a very entertaining work, with solid practical advice layered between the jokes. The author's insight into the inner workings of the male and female minds is the stuff of stand-up comedy. Just reading the chapter titles alone had me laughing out loud. "How to Not Look Like a Stalker in Victoria's Secret", "How to Appear Calm While She's Driving" and "How to Apologize Convincingly" are a few examples of my personal favorites. There is also an amusing ranking system for each chapter comparing difficulty of task vs. reward of task. For example, "How to Apologize Convincingly" is low on the difficulty scale, but high on the rewards whereas "How to Explain Football" is high on the difficulty scale, but low on the rewards.

The chapters are concise (2-3 pages) and easy to follow, making it suitable for all types of readers. Because of this I would highly recommend the book for your own library and as a gift idea for any suitable occasion, such as the upcoming Father's Day. I have already purchased a few myself as I fully expect the book to be a hit with family and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars LITTLE EFFORT FOR BIG REWARDS!
I bought this book after hearing the author on a radio show.I slipped it in with the magazines in our bathroom -- where my husband does most of his reading -- and he devoured it from cover to cover. He's already working on the six-pack abs and has plans to make tiramisu this weekend. If I can get him to stay awake after sex, I'll know I've hit the jackpot.I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Man With A Plan
Craig Boreth has done it yet again. First there was that other thing and now . . . this. Wow! What next? But, let's focus on this right now . . .

I must admit that I was immediately drawn to the hilariously strident tone of the title when I included the book in my Amazon guide "So You Want To Be Your Own Wife." But that is part of the brilliance of " . . . Damn Shirt . . ."'s concept: looks like a feminist screed, actually is a cleverly disguised spy manual for men to the secret and mysterious world of connubial bliss, nay, even concupiscience.

Ok, yes, my wife and I blithely disregarded the rules for reading (See "For Men Only" and "For Women Only") and read it selectively aloud together. We hooted again and again and agreed that it was not only funny but spot-on. Although we are surely not the target audience (my wife thinks farts are quite amusing and I find ironing meditative . . . go figure!), we loved the book and ordered a few more copies as gifts for friends.

On one level, the book's short chapter "bites" and Jay Mazhar's great illustrations make for the quintessential "coffee table/bathroom book." But it is much more. Each chapter---with great titles like "How To Eliminate Gas" and "How To Walk Slowly Through a Museum"---has a witty and humorous lead-in that then manages to segue into very real useful and well-researched information for, not just wife-pleasing and appearance-of-sophistication, but things that all self-respecting, socially-mobile adult males should take personal pride in doing. Things like being considerate of others in one's environment, listening to others (or at least appearing to), tying a bow tie, keeping your body fit, and, my personal favorite, "How To Have a Reasonable Midlife Crisis". The best thing is that Boreth slips all these important things in while you are chuckling over his humorous presentation so nothing has any kind of a preachy feel ("I'm happy, fabulous, hunky, sensitive, and evolved and here's how you can be, too!").

This book is many things for most people. Would-be metrosexuals will eat it up as a starter guide. Young married (and impending matrimony) couples will benefit mightily. I predict, in fact, that this will become the hot shower gift of the next generation. Older couples may pick up pointers. The clueless will find clues and the clued will become yet more clueful. Skunkish boors will be predictably unchanged and unchangable but their wives will get some brownie points with friends and family for having tried something, anything. As well, we showed it to our gay friends (in fact, one couple just got married) and they loved it for the kitsch factor, the studly voice, and the "retro" illustrations. The general gay literary critique: "Craig Boreth is hot."

All said and done, "win, wooing, and wowing" is, as the author so succinctly put it, "a journey, not a destination." "How to Iron Your Own Damn Shirt . . ." is one hilarious and well-written roadmap to the ultimate satisfaction, seemingly scarce in today's world, of happily bonding with your life partner, and to that most enigmatic of human institutions, marriage. Buy copies for your friends and laugh and learn together! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars More black women need to read this book
I have never really had any serious problems with my hair like going bald or fall-out or extreme breakage, however I have experienced breakage and dryness throughout my years of taking care of my hair. All my life I have had thick shoulder length hair and when I went to college, with the hard water and "in hairstyles" I started to realize that I was no longer taking care of my hair properly. First off, I wacked it down to about an inch all over and shaved in the back, ear down. I loved the cut and in a sense wanted to start over, fresh. I had to do something so I started doing the things my mom used to do, wash it with products for dry hair, detangle while wet, etc. My hair started growing again, but the same way you learn as you go, you can always learn more. Then I got on the internet and started searching. I found ubh publications and decided to order Mrs. Howse's book. The book was not expensive so what did I have to lose. I am so glad I bought the book, not only did it reinforce what I already knew but it gave me a positive outlook as to what my hair can look like if I keep doing the things that I have been doing (consistently). In about 2 more years my hair will probably be down to my waist! (It is a little past shoulder length now, layered) I have no problem in wacking my hair off and sporting a "Halle Berry", or "Toni Braxton in the old days" cut but now I know that I don't HAVE to have short hair. It's a decision YOU make. You can let it grow and take care of it, or cut it off and take care of it. Black women let's do our research on the hair care industry and stop abusing our hair with all these products and curling irons and blow dryers (all the time, sometimes is okay). Let's grow some long hair so we can throw it behind our shoulders and let it blow in the wind, I am on my way! God Bless everyone!

5-0 out of 5 stars CATHY BOOK IS GREAT
I bought Cathy's book in November and I think her book has a lot of good information in it to help black women keep their hair healthy. In the book she explains how electronics like hot curlers are not always good to use because it can cause hair breakage. The one thing I learned from reading Cathy book is that everyone should keep their hair clean by washing their hair 3 times a week and to deep condition your hair atleast once a week. I have been using this method for 5 months now and I have seen results. I bought her conditioner and its very good. It keeps my hair from breaking and its made my hair healthy and longer. I get compliments on my hair everywhere I go and I inform people/friends on how to keep their hair healthy like mine.
If anyone has read Cathy's book and do not think its a great book then i suggest you buy cathy's conditioner.I think its time that we (african american women) take care of our hair.

1-0 out of 5 stars Reader from Virginia Beach, VA
Save your hard-earned money, sisters!!! This book is a waste of time and is only an infomericial to push the author's haircare products.

Most of the book is about the author's disagreements with other haircare professionals.

Save your money, eat a balanced diet, drink lots of water, exercise, deep condition your hair after shampooing, and take a good multi-vitamin.

This book is a sad joke!

3-0 out of 5 stars Just ordered Cathy's Book
GAVE THE BOOK 2 stars, i will rate it again when i have actually read the book.

Like many other African Americans I am looking for ways to maintain a healthy head of hair, that will not only grow but it will look like a million bucks. I have read most of the reviews on here, and I must say that I am kinda skeptical about this book (and I am also wondering if I am wasting my money buying Cathy's Book). After further consideration I realize that I have tried nearly every other products and recommendations possibly so trying the system mentioned is this book is just like the others (it can either succeed or fail) and if it fails I will move on to another system until I find the one that's right for my hair.

As i have stated before, I haven't read the book as yet, but as soon as I get it (July 15, 2004) I will read it and post my OPINION on here. I have seen where numerous reviewers stated that Cathy is advertising her products within the book but after visiting her website I saw where she stated that YOU SHOULD USE PRODUCTS THAT WORK BEST FOR YOU (the products she makes and uses are one and the same, so of course that's what she is going to mention). Personally I have tried and fell in love with the MIZANI system, where I use their sensitive relaxer, their moisturizing shampoo and Hydrafuse conditioner, and their H20 nighttime treatment (which I love, in three weeks I have seen a vast difference in my hair, next to no breakage) I also use Revlon's ZP-11 Antidandruff hairdressing (used after every hair wash) because I have a really bad case of dandruff problem.

So reading Cathy's book does not mean that I am changing my hair products, it simply means that I am starting to educate myself on how to care for and maintain a healthy head of hair. YOU CAN TAKE THE KNOWLEDGE WITHOUT THE PRODUCTS.

Hope this make sense to you all, I will post my opinion on the book within the next 3 weeks.

I have taught for years and have been impressed by Milady's dedication to the Industry, until now. This new text book was headed in the right direction, with the addition of some fantastic photos for nail diseases, but it missed it's usual high standards drastically. The chapters, especially those most important to the foundation of education, such as sanitation issues and safety issues towards clients, fall far too short. A school is intended to give the basis of a long and safe career in this industry, yet this book irresponsibley dedicated more time to air brushing (which is difficult at best to learn via a book) then it did to the fundamentals of salon safety for both the tech and the client. I am very very disappointed. The chapters seem to be started off in the right direction, then are seemingly cut severly short. The book is choppy and incomplete at best. Sad to see such unprofessional results from a long time industry leader who has continually been the one who set the standards and raised the bar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It works, with very little time and effort, you get results.
Bought this book more out of curiosity than anything else. After having it lying around idle for a couple months I came across it one day and decided to give it a try. However I'm not too much into the beauty business so I targeted only the problem areas. Results were almost instant. My double chin has disappeared, my 'jowls' have shrunk and my fce looks more aglow. My husband has noticed a marked difference. My friends who had not seen me for a while have all commented on how young I look. The exercises are not easy to follow. I had to sort of figure them out step by step, I guess its because I'm not too familiar with all thse fancy names of the facial muscles, but definitely I would recommend this book and these exercises to anyone who wants to tone up their face. I'm 52 and look [if you can believe my friends] 35 or younger. When I told my cosmetologist I am 52 I could see the look of disbelief on her face.In less than ten days I had fantastic results.I spend maybe 5 minutes a day on these exercises because, quite frankly I'm not too energetic when it comes to this kind of thing.I did it only out of curiousity and I am really pleased with the results.I would recommend you apply a little facial cream before you start though.Thank you Carole Maggio, I can face the world with a radiant smile and I do feel so much more confident and I like what I see when I look in the mirror.I plan to do a couple more different ones, but right now I am more than happy with what I see.My husband feels so proud to show me off to his colleagues when they respond with disbelief when he boasts ..yep! been married 27 years...This may all sound vain but it is true.I am a much happier person and what you see in the mirror does truly affect all the other aspects of your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars It really works!
I tried this book after my husband saw on TV talkback that women were having better results doing face exercises than with plastic surgery, especially taking into account the risk of complications etc. We took 2 "before" photos, front and side. My complexion looked sallow, with dark rings around the eyes, sagging cheeks and the beginnings of a double chin. I am 40 and having recently lost about 37 pounds was starting to look a bit saggy, although I have few wrinkles. I took 2 similar photos two weeks after doing the exercises every day and the results are incredible. The sagging jowls have all but disappeared, the double chin has smoothed over, the rings under the eyes gone and the complexion is now light and dewy. If I hadn't taken the candid "before" photos, I don't think I would have recognized the dramatic changes that were taking place, as they happen a little day by day. If anything, these changes after 2 weeks were even more dramatic than the photos of clients in Ms. Maggio's book. The exercises are very scientifically formulated to exercise the muscles and not create more wrinkles.

I send the photos to my mother, an active woman in her sixties. She said they were amazing and almost unbelievable. Now I am going to send her a copy of the book!

1-0 out of 5 stars book doesn't live up to its claim
I tried the exercises in this book, and they didn't give the results they claimed. I don't believe this book because wrinkles aren't caused by your facial muscles but by the changes in your skin such as the thinning of the skin and loss of elasticity. I wonder about those who gave it high marks and how long they were on the program. Most likely they only had temporary improvements. Buyer beware!

= A MUST READ For Any Woman Over 40!
Reviewer: A reader from Atlanta, GA
The New Facercise is a must read for any woman over 40 years of age! Not only are the exercises easy to follow, they really do work! It takes a little time, you must go slow and be patient, but it's well worth it! If people have trouble following instructions in general -- they might be better served using the video which is very inexpensive. Personally, I found the book to be very well written, as well as funny! I must say I have changed my entire face with this fine brows are lifted, my cheeks full and lifted, my nose is perkier, my jaw firm and my lips are plump! Who could ask for more? The book also has many tips which I have followed like, taping between your brows in the evening to prevent night-time furrows. It sounds silly, but it works! Also, Carole makes recommendations on products with the newest ingredients in them like spin trap and D20. These products are the newest and most advanced available on the market today! I would never have heard of these products, had I not read her book! So all around, I'd have to say that in my book, The New Facercise is a MUST READ for anyone over 40 or for anyone seeking a TRUE NATURAL FACELIFT!! Thanks Carole!

5-0 out of 5 stars Carole Maggio looks good in print -- better in person!
I JUST HAD to respond to the woman who wrote in about her disappointment about Carole Maggio's Facercise book and the supposed no change in Carole's face from "Figure 1" to "Figure 2" while performing the exercises. First off, newsflash here....books don't move like motion pictures, what does the reader expect?!!! The reviewer goes on to say how she looks like an "airbrushed 18 year old"!! Ha!
