5-0 out of 5 stars It Changed My Life
No kidding. I was resistant at first to start the book, I thought that by exploring my sleep I'd make the problem worse. Believe me, the exact opposite is true. "Knowledge is power" has never held so much truth. It took almost no time to feel a definite change in my sleep patterns. I started falling asleep in less than 20 minutes every night. If I woke up during the night I was able to get back to sleep almost instantly. By limiting my time in bed I was able to retrain my brain to think of a bed as a place to sleep again. At first I only got four hours of sleep a night, but now I'm up to as much as six and a half and I'm only into the second week of the program. Please do youself a favor, if you have insomnia, there is no need to suffer any longer. BUY THIS BOOK at any price, peace of mind can be yours again.

5-0 out of 5 stars An absolute must-buy for long-time insomnia sufferers!!
This book is wonderful--I finished it in 2 days! It is a very easy-to-read explanation of the physiology of sleep, why we lose it, and how we can get it back. The techniques Dr. Jacobs describes to stop insomnia are easy to follow (although they do take patience and persistence) and really make sense. And, best of all, this program works!!! I suffered from insomnia for over 16 years, and I never thought I would be free of endless days and nights worrying about sleep. To my amazement, the night following the day I started reading the book, I fell asleep within 10 minutes! Unheard of for me! And, I wasn't even employing any of the techniques suggested in the book yet. I whole-heartedly recommend this book to all insomniacs who suffer from constant anxiety about sleeping as I did, and wish you endless nights of restful sleep!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book really works!
I work the midnight shift as a police sergeant. I had never been able to sleep more than a few hours a day, and the situation had horrible prospects. I bought this book out of desperation, and it has changed my life. I went from 3 or 4 hours of sleep a day to 6 or 8 hours. I feel like a human being again. GOD BLESS YOU DR. JACOBS, AND MR. BENSON! THANK-YOU!

5-0 out of 5 stars Put insomnia to rest.........
I know whereof I speak...this book is the best insomnia guide that I have read. I put the advice to practice and it helped cure my sleep problems. I had even consulted a sleep disorder clinic and yet they did not help me as much as the information in this book. As with all great guides, you must take the action prescribed in order to feel the benefit. Best of all, this program is drug free.

5-0 out of 5 stars A life saver
I bought this book out of desperation. It seems that one day I suddenly lost ability to fall asleep. After several weeks spent virtually without sleep, I went to a doctor and got sleep medication, which worked well. However, I was unable to sleep without it and my husband and I wanted to have a second baby. Thus, I knew I would have to get off the medication; but when I tried to sleep without the pill, I couldn't fall asleep.

Thank you to all the readers who have recommended this book and helped me choose the right one! As a result of following Dr. Jacob's advice, I no longer need any medications and have no sleep-related problems. This was a great investment!

This book can be helpful to anyone who would like to improve quality (or quantity) of his or her sleep. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Great information, but it is there anything new here?
The message of this book could be summarized as "Relaxation is good for your health. You can relax by 1)Finding a quiet place 2) Sitting in a comfortable position/posture that will keep you alert but won't lead you to sleep 3) choosing a mental device that will let you concentrate 4) maintaining a passive attitude during this period". The rest of this book goes into the health dangers of stress (as understood in 1975),the health benefits of relaxation and how it differs from sleep, different ways to evoke the relaxation response, and how the relaxation response has been evoked throughout history in the context of various cultures and religions. I think this book is of great historical interest because it was one of the first attempts to expose the dangers of stress in a clear way (I found his discussion on how high blood pressure leads to heart disease particularly illustrating) and gave scientific validity to age-old ways of treating it without involving the methods traditionally sanctioned by Western medicine such as surgery and high-priced pills. His findings are based on research he performed with Transcendental Meditation followers, so he spends much effort on qualifying his conclusions, adding disclaimers, and otherwise protecting himself from possible attacks because of his work with such a fringe group. I think this limits the practical usefulness of the book and makes it somewhat dated, particularly since no one today questions that stress is bad and relaxation good. I think a more appropriate revision of this book should include not just a new introduction by the author, but also references to current research on which meditation techniques or approaches bring the most tangible health benefits and how they differ from placebos. A new assesment on the advantages of modern medicine vs. alternative therapies for preventing heart disease would also be in place. By being properly updated, a book of this nature would be very influential in setting a balance between the new age crowd that has little regard for science in medicine, and the medical establishment that has a vested interest in the status quo and thus rejects alternative medicine as a whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars Woo Hoo!
This is worth the money to own -- it's so, so worth it... I did another review once for a somewhat similar book -- "The Quiet Mind," by White Eagle. That is a more explicitly "spiritual" book than this one, full of little aphoristic sayings that often refer to God, or "the light"... I still like that book, but I wanted to speak up in favor of this approach to having a quiet mind, also. "The Relaxation Response" is really quite short and to-the-point, and has a fundamentally Western, rational, scientific feel to it. The end goal is very similar to White Eagle's book, however. Herbert Benson helps us to know the value of taking just ten or fifteen minutes each day to breathe, to say your private mantra over and over, and to simply Be... I think a lot of people out there have some pretty flaky mental associations with the word "mantra." People immediately think of the Beatles saying "heavy, man" and binging in a huge way on LSD-laced mandarin oranges, or some similar image. Benson shows that meditation need not be like this. A mantra could be basically any simple, calming phrase -- anything that doesn't provoke fitful spasms of hysterical laughter is probably fine.

One example of a poor choice of a mantra would be "get... get... get... out... out... out..." like hockey mask-wearing Jason in the "Friday the Thirteenth" movies. A better one might be something calming, such as "decaf for me, please... decaf for me, please... decaf for me, please..." or, better still, the name of a beloved childhood pet. That's what I use, the name of the dog we owned when I was a kid, and it works for me. You can use a pleasant-sounding nonsense word if you want, also. Furthermore, it isn't necessary to be given a mantra in a personalized, ritualistic fashion by a personal guru, like many TM practioners used to advocate in the 70s. It's okay to pick your own, whatever works for you, a lot of those gurus were just a bunch of frauds.

This book is worth owning, for the further calming effect of being able to view the author's helpfully compiled graphs, and his discussions of the experimental sessions that led to his understanding of the essence of meditation. What he is basically going to tell you to do, however, is simply to take a few minutes a day to sit comfortably, breathe in and out, chant quietly, and try to let your mind empty itself out. Emptying the mind of extraneous thoughts is not meant to feel like wringing water out of a wet washcloth, either -- it should feel like leaving the washcloth hanging loosely over a clothesline, and letting the water, the thoughts, drip to the ground below of their own, unhurried accord, for just fifteen tranquil minutes a day. I wish I had discovered this book years ago. Two mellow thumbs up -- check this one out.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Golly Miss Molly!!
This book will teach you a simple technique you can do anywhere that puts your body in a state of relaxation. The best part? It is very well researched and documented and really works! I give it 5 stars easy. Other self-help books I liked include "Treat Your Own Knees."

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT information and practical guide to the exercise!
Top notch book on producing a meditative state, called here the relaxation response. Good information also about various traditions of producing the relaxation response. For arguably the best book on reducing stress and improving relaxation (and actually a lot more too) check out EFFORTLESS WELLBEING by Evan Finer. Amazing would be an understatement for that book. The Relaxation Response is a classic and should be read if you have not. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! CLASSIC!

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the Relaxation Response
Prior to becoming a Christian I practiced a form of Eastern meditation. Even though my Christian faith meant very much to me, I missed the ongoing peace and calm I received from meditation. I could not seem to incorporate the benefits of my Bible study and prayer time into my daily life. About a month ago I read the Beyond the Relaxation Response. I decided to try Dr. Benson's simple technique which is based on the same principles of Eastern meditation. Instead of using a mantra I used a term from the Bible. Immediately I felt like I was right back were I left off years ago. I have now come full circle, adding the Relaxation Response to my Christian faith. As an RN and a lay counselor I see many possibilities for using this technique to bring relaxation and relieve stress. As a Christian I believe this is a technique to help incorporate our prayer time experience with God into our daily lives. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating as well as Practical
Originally I read this book as a text that I chose as part of a book review assignment I had for a psychology class I was in. For some reason this book really grabbed my interest right away since he was writing about something I knew very little about.

The author describes various accounts of myths and stories of some of the amazing feats that Asian Buddhists have acheived in the past. They do things such as leaping (almost flying) great distances upon rocks, and also being able to increase their body temperatures during meditation. It's said that pious monks can be tested by wearing garments that were drenched in ice cold water, and within a short matter of time the garments would be completely dry. He decided to research these things first hand by performing experiments on their meditation techneques. He even provides the actual experimental results and conclusions from all of the various temperature readings he performed. It's interesting to hear about his interactions and impressions on the Dali Lama as well.

For a more practical usage, this book is great for anyone who wants to learn some realistic and effective step-by-step relaxation and meditation techneques.

Overall, his research is very well organized and stated enthusiastically in an informative manner. This book is valuable in terms of the cultural analysis, the scientific evidence, the psychological studies made, and the practical exercises described within.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beyond The relaxation Response
The book relates Benson's research into the power of the mind over the body, but more importantly how to use this power.

The book starts by describing the setting of research criteria and planning a trip to Tibet/Himalayas.

In the Himalayas observations are made of monks who can perform amazing feats in controlloling the skin temperature of their body.

The last section relates to how this body control, which is now called the Relaxation Response, can be used in Western medicine.

A very good book for making readers think about their own limiting beliefs and what can be done if we challange what we believe. The book is also a must for Doctors who want to move on from traditional Western medicine and take in a more holistic approach. ... Read more

Book Description

In this life-changing book, Dr. Herbert Benson draws on his twenty-five years as a physician and researcher to reveal how affirming beliefs, particularly belief in a higher power, make an important contribution to our physical health. We are not simply nourished by meditation and prayer, but are, in essence, "wired for God."

Combining the wisdom of modem medicine and of age-old faith. Dr. Benson shows how anyone can, with the aid of a caring physician or healer, use their beliefs and other self-care methods to heal over 60 percent of medical problems.

As practical as it is spiritual, Timeless Healing is a blueprint for healing and transforming your life. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!
Through many of the medical observations made by the authors, this book provides some interesting ideas about the connection between the mind and body. Even though we all know that stress (which comes from our minds) influences our health, many of us find it difficult to put the mind and body together in one equation. This book is a great attempt to begin making the bridge between the subjective and objective world. It is full of insightful ideas and inspiring anecdotes. Just excellent overall. If you'd like to read about a sound theoretical framework that explains many of these things, I strongly suggest "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. When I read Sato's book, everything clicked so much is was unbelievable!

5-0 out of 5 stars Faith in God turbo-charges our indwelling healing nature
I think what is amazing about this book is that Herbert Benson states without a doubt that faith in God is healthy for us. While our ancestors took it for granted that God healed them, as Dr. Benson explains, we have been taught to see healing purely in technical scientific terms. Dr. Benson explains that when we repudiated the importance of belief in healing we deprived ourselves of a powerful healing force.

Dr. Benson knows that his rational-scientific audience will be skeptical of his arguements. So, he provides us with well-reasoned arguements supported by ample evidence. He explains that we need to relax our over-stressed minds on a regular basis. We need this as an antedote to our hurried lives that stress us out and make us sick. He cites many studies (much from his own research) that daily meditation stimulates the bodies natural healing mechanisms.

Now, the radical finding of Dr. Benson's research is that belief in God makes a difference in healing. If a person meditates regularly using a spiritual phrase they are more likely to heal than those who use a secular word such as "peace". The person's religion doesn't matter. It seems that God is an equal opportunity healer.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Mind/body connection
Dr Benson presents strong evidence for what others have called the "mind / body connection." Mainstream medical science has not yet recognized the importance belief plays in health but, Dr. Benson presents numerous studies that validate the major role belief plays in the healing process and wellness. Practitioners of complimentary therapies will find this book especially helpful in understanding how many non-drug based therapies can work. Well written and thought provoking! ... Read more

If self-help books usually fall short of delivering life changes, The Breakout Principle is a book of a different stripe: a science-based path to self-transformation. Herbert Benson, M.D. pulls together 30 years of mind-body research to describe the Breakout Principle: "a powerful mind-body impulse that severs prior mental patterns and--even in times of great stress or emotional trauma--opens an inner door to a host of personal benefits." Breakouts open the door to different kinds of peak experiences--self-awareness, creativity, productivity, athleticism, rejuvenation, and transcendence--and lead to lasting changes.

Benson explains the stages ofstress/struggle, release (during which you give up unresolved destructive or negative thought patterns), breakout/peak experience, and "new-normal" state. He balances the science behind his concepts with practical, how-to tips. For example, many different activities and types of experiences can trigger your personal Breakout in the release stage, and Benson helps you figure out which ones might work for you: repetitive mental or physical activity, an absorbing personal encounter, expression of your personal belief system, "total abandon" to an intense experience, altruistic activity, or filling your mind with a dominant sensory impression. He and skillful co-author William Proctor illustrate points with case studies and personal reflections, making complex medical and philosophical issues more easily accessible.

Benson, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Harvard Medical School and founding president of the Mind/Body Medical Institute, is well known for his mind/body research, especially his work on the relaxation response. His other books include The Relaxation Response, Beyond the Relaxation Response: How to Harness the Healing Power of Your Personal Beliefs, and Timeless Healing. This powerful and empowering book is highly recommended as a guide for readers willing to do the work of making a life change. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Enlightening!
THE BREAKOUT PRINCIPLE teaches you a simple yet powerful concept (called the "Breakout Principle") to help improve your life on a long-term basis.

The book is clearly written, making it easy for the reader to grasp the principle and learn to put together his or her own personal breakout strategy. I like how anyone - individuals or groups - can apply this concept to his or her life. The authors give great examples of how people from all walks of life with different problems are able to trigger this breakout principle and transform their lives for the better - a family dealing with their fears after the September 11 attack, athletes trying to improve their game, a woman trying to find self-discipline to lose weight, a young man seeking deeper spiritual awareness, and more.

THE BREAKOUT PRINCIPLE is a very enlightening book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Breakout Principle to maximize your creativity
THE BREAKOUT PRINCIPLE breaks through to a new understanding of
creativity and productivity. I never realized that there was a biological basis for the generation of ideas and insights -and that this biology could actually be switched on at will. I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to increase the odds of achieving peak performance at work or play.

Pretty much anything you enjoy doing can be a source of "The Breakout Principle." There. I've read the book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for Educators!
Dr. Benson's Breakout techniques have had a significant impact on my life, both in reducing stress and in advising elementary school teachers, whom I supervise. People who are interested in extending their knowledge of brain based learning and reducing stress that is causing chaos in our classrooms need to read this book! I recommend this program to anyone in the field of education.

1-0 out of 5 stars Old wine in new bottles
This is a hard book to finish. The good doctor belabors the material with a particularly annoying baby talk style. The book wears thin quickly after the first couple chapters. Most of the "revolutionary" material consists of concepts already espoused in many prior books on creativity. This book should be listed as an example of "literary fluff" in a dictionary. Don't bother. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Healthful Living
The Wellness Book has been extremely helpful to me and is one of the best investments I have made in myself. I first used this book 10 years ago and was able to establish some healthful living goals and actions for myself that improved my physical conditioning immensely. I continue to use it today. What I really like about this book is that it enables each reader to really focus in on their individual lifestyles, needs, and habits and develop specific, realistic, and individualized action plans for improved and healthful living. The improved physical condition that I realized as a result of focusing on a plan and actions enabled me to climb mountains in the Sierra Nevada. I have also used techniques in this book to successfully address anxiety. This week I pulled the book off of my shelf and am going at it again. I am having fun with this exercise because I can compare my "10 loves" from 10 years ago to my "10 loves" of today and put a plan in place to realize them. Many thanks to the authors for such insightful and all emcompassing work. This book is as useful and current today as it was the day it was written.

4-0 out of 5 stars Simple, But Big Solutions
If you're stressed out or overwhelmed, I highly recommend this book. It gives you simple, workable solutions that make a HUGE difference.

Only criticism is that parts of it are a bit too "new age-y", but overall, it's very good.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes you think!
When I first starting reading this book, I was like "thats my book, thats my life that she is writing about" I loved her writing and examples and stories that she told from other people's experiences. I recommend this book to anyone who is interested in people's behaviors and everyday life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Your thoughts should work with you, not against you!
I read this book at a very low point in my life, with depression and a variety of physical symptoms related to anxiety. This practical, straightforward book helped me gain some control of racing, negative thoughts (Borysenko calls this type of thinking "awfulizing"). Borysenko's rationale includes the fact that your body can actually help your mind to calm down. She provides simple, gentle stretching/breathing to help this happen. For me, it was most valuable to realize that even if my thoughts/intellect seemed beyond my control, my physiology is the same as all humans. Therefore, breathing/stretching has to affect my body/mind the same way as it does other humans. I kept the book on hand for bad moments, and I found that using the exercises helped me to bypass the downward spiraling thoughts and begin to get centered. She includes theory, psychology, and spirituality which supports the intellect as well. I still needed help after I found this book, but it absolutely put me on a safer, stronger path. I have loaned this book several times, to others in need. There are so many books out there, it's overwhelming. This one is worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars knowledgable integration of medicine, psychology and spirit
These are excellenct introductory lectures on theory and practice of healing. Joan Borysenko has the rare knowledge of mulitple fields: medicine, psychology and spiritual teachings. the lectures are an introduction to an integration of these three. Borysenko also reminds us of simple healing things: creativity, beauty, meditation and prayer.

4-0 out of 5 stars Practical book . . .
As far as self-help books go, this one is practical, informative, and easy to read. Joan Borysenko, I believe, is good at her craft, and gets her ideas across well.

This is a book that is based on the belief that the mind can help heal the body. There's physical exercises and stretches to relieve tenstion and anxiety, there's deep breathing instructions to initiate the relaxation response, meditation to calm the mind and expand the soul, and there's even a psychological evaltional of questions and answers to guide you in your stress, anxiety, and depression levels, which may be contributing to your physical illness.

Joan Borysenko presents her knowledge in a straight-forward, down-to-earth way that makes the reader sit up and listen.

Truly a helpful book to anyone who has a phycial illness, and wants to help the mind heal the body. ... Read more
