1-0 out of 5 stars Yet Another pH Miracle Book - **YAWN**
Alkalizing did not produce results for me. Weight loss is still about diet, calories and metabolic rate, no matter how you disguise those factors with supplements or theories designed to sell them.

As I've said elsewhere, if fat is an acid problem, why doesn't vinegar make you fat? Perhaps because there are no calories in vinegar? The products behind the ph Miracle can only be sold by word of mouth and in your home on a table or shelf, sort of a shrine. Why? Why can't you sell it on eBay or in your own health food store? Maybe because that would mean price competition, and at $80 a pound for some powdered veggies you can understand why competition is unwelcome.

Beware when manipulative marketing organizations, no matter how many scholarly credentials they have, ask you to open your wallet for products or tests designed to confirm the need for the products. They're trying to help you while helping themselves to your wallet. There are plenty of watchdog sites to explain the aggressive marketing tactics used by some MLM charlatans. Books such as "Combating Cult Mind Control" by Hassan, or "Dangerous Persuaders" by Samways, or Butterfield's book on Amway ... With any MLM, you should first ask HOW will I recover my initial sales kit investment? WHO will buy these products at these prices? Take it from a Long Distance Marketing vet who took a bath ... MLM is set up for and by the people at the top of the pyramid who milk the profits. And if you encounter any alternative marketing strategies, like some warmly seductive member of the opposite sex who comes on to you in a major but false way - but won't give you the time of day when you're not BUYING something - report it to the company, the MLM marketing association, and any appropriate authorities. The public is not required to tolerate any form of harassment in sales, marketing, or employment situations. Complaining long and loud is the only way to put manipulative people where they belong. If you don't, you too could end up feeling USED and PLAYED by the GREEDY motivations of manipulative people. And there is nothing moral about pulling people's heartstrings to line your own pockets. It is un-Christian and it should be stopped.

I lost weight when I boosted my metabolic rate to burn calories through exercise. In America we eat heavily all year round. In the summer we store fat when the heat reduces our metabolic rate and we hibernate in air conditioning, and in the winter we're supposed to burn the stored fat to stay warm, but instead we keep eating and live in warm homes. Then we complain we're fat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Scientific Health is Yours!
For the first time in my 47 years of life, I decided to go on a program after reading Dr Young's book.

I must say I was impressed, and at the same time understood that not taking any incentive would mean poor health for the rest of my life. So I took up the challenge.

I followed religiously all of your recommendations and tips and succeeded finally, oh btw I forgot to mention that my lower back used to hurt all the time and also my liver used to bother me. But now all the pain is gone thanks to this system. Here are just a few of the benefits I received: my blood pressure now is 117/84 (still can't believe it),

I lost 19 pounds in 2 weeks, although I wasn't overweight, my skin is firm and silky and everybody is giving me compliments wherever I go, they just can't believe I'm 47.

The only drawback is that I had to go and get my lenses replaced in my reading glasses because my vision has improved so much I couldn't use them anymore they became too strong.

I now feel very light and even enlightened, and feel at least 12 years younger, my sleep has improved tremendously, and I go to the bathroom at night only once compared to 2 or 3 before.

Thank you very much I will recommend your book to all of my friends, boy are they unhealthy and overweight!

This is not some fad diet though; it WILL influence your decisions to the better. Dr Young explains that it's not the fat that is making you fat but rather the acid.

Well, I don't want to give the whole book away you will have to find out for yourself.

Scientific Health is Yours! Go get it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent! Lots of full-color photographs
This is an excellent, full-color photographic atlas of dermatology. The text is not complete enough to diagnose and treat, but if you are looking for an excellent collection of photographs with brief descriptions to peak your interest this is a wonderful resource. Lots of images of less common disorders and diseases of the skin (Lamellar ichthyosis, pemphigus vulgaris, EB's), and also common ailments (acne, rosacea, cancer, etc.)

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REFERENCE BOOK
I have used this book throughout 2 years of medical school and it is one of the best dermatology references I have come across. It has also been a quick review for the the path seen with derm since the pictures are so clear and give a good representation of the path. An easy book to skim through before boards as well.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of Clinical Dermatology
I enjoyed reading this book as a layperson, not having gone to medical school. I have a number of minor skin problems and this book allowed me to differentiate the insignificant ones from the ones I need to pay attention to. I think that this book should be in every household, because a person or parent should know what skin affliction(s) they have and how serious they are before they rush off to the doctor. One thing that should have been elaborated on more is the sub-section on The Nails as Clues to Multiorgan Disease. There are only a few pages of examples of this, yet there are dozens of correlations between abnormal fingernails and systemic disease. The book only gives blantant and graphic examples of serious nail problems and then gives the possible associated underlying disease. It should be expanded to include more "soft sign" nail problems to help doctors make educated guesses about what tests to run.

    5-0 out of 5 stars WELL-RESEARCHED, WELL-DOCUMENTED
Shinning like a king's armour, the colours and synopses of this atlas made a thorough analysis of skin diseases.
Any medical student or practioner who needs a dermatological companion would find a reliable one in this atlas. The uncountable pictures, which featured in this new edition are both illustrative and descriptive. Everything about the book indicates sound research and documentation, (on the part of its authors). It is a superlative tool for both doctors and students: the type of book many people would like to keep as CD-ROMs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Out Damned Spot!
Was it, perhaps, the abundant clear color photos? Was it, by chance, the in-depth and easy to understand text? Or could it have been the complete indexing of every skin disease known to mankind, from Acne to Zoster sine zoster, that compelled me to snatch this wonderful red book from the shelf and declare, "Hey, this is one super-cool book!"

If I were a dermatologist or a general practitioner, I'd want this atlas in my reference library. Ah...but alas, I'm but a simple lawyer trying to find out how to get rid of a case of... Dare I say more? Out damned spot! Out!

Here's how I see it. If I, as layperson, might think this atlas worthy of your attention...then it must be! Cammy Diaz ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This needs to be read by all women everywhere!
This is probably the most life changing book I've ever read. I wish in school as young girls we had known exactly what our body does at menstruation and ovulation. It's amazing.

Not only can this be used for TTC - it can be used to learn how to better utilize birth control methods. Being aware of your basal body temp & cervical fluid you actually know when you are ovulating and when your period is due. Like clockwork!

In addition, having your temps stay high instead of dipping down as your period approaches is indicative of pregnancy achievement. In my case this happened, (preg test to confirm) but unfortunately I wasn't able to hold the pregnancy and my temps started to go downwards -- making my period a couple of days late. If I hadn't have been charting, I would've never known I was pregnant, and just chalked it up to a late period.

This book is good for all women - empowering them to learn more about their amazing bodies!

5-0 out of 5 stars An amazing book for EVERY woman
After announcing to a close friend of mine who was eight months pregnant that I was about to begin to try to have a baby, I was given a weathered copy of Taking Charge of Your Fertility. I direct a women's health program at a community hospital and was amazed at what I DIDN'T know about my body after reading this book. Toni Weschler is a gifted writer. A public health practitioner's dream, she is extremely clear, distilling scientific facts to manageable pieces of information. She dispels the myth that charting your fertility, traditionally referred to as "Natural Family Planning", is a method used only by a select few who choose natural methods of birth control because of religious beliefs. Moreover, she emphasizes the connection between women's empowerment and knowledge of normal biological processes that are often medicalized to the point of leaving many women mystified. I would go so far as to say this should be required reading for all young women entering high school! (NOTE: I am now in my first trimester as a result of the information provided in the pages of this book. I am very grateful!)

5-0 out of 5 stars Got Pregnant the Second Month Using This Method!!!!!
I highly recommend this book and method for getting pregnant. I am 39 and had been trying to get pregnant for six months using an ovulation predictor kit. We already have a 2 year old daughter that was conceived the first month we tried, so I was very discouraged that we were not pregnant yet. A friend of mine recommended this book, and I thought it was worth a shot! I found the book a very easy read. I read the sections relevant to getting pregnant in one night (there are also sections on birth control, menopause, etc). I began charting immediately. I did not go crazy with charting-I just recorded my temp each day and checked the other 2 signs (cervical mucus and cervical position) starting about a week before I knew I was going to ovulate. I got pregnant the second month!! The book is super informative about all aspects of a woman's reproductive body. A great read even if you just want to get to know what's going on with your body every month. Hope this review helps!!

5-0 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK
Wow!! First of all - I was quite ignorant about my own body until I read this book. I will share this book with my children. I also purchased the software that goes along with it - and IT WORKED SUCCESSFULLY!! I am expecting my first child Dec. 04 !! I did "practice" charting for one month and then the first month that we tried for real - well it happened!! A friend of mine and my cousin both used this book and it helped them as well. I highly suggest this book to anyone who wants to conceive. It really helps you to understand your body. It has some medical terms - but explains them in detail. I also suggest the software - it made it MUCH easier for me!!

5-0 out of 5 stars You HAVE to read this book
I bought this book for two reasons, to get pregnant after 35 & due to everyone else's review of this book. Now, I'm a believer. If you're a woman and think you know about your body, you don't until you read this book. My whole life I thought there was something wrong with me, and now I know I was normal all along. I wish I would have had this guidance as a teenager and just discovering the intricacies of my body. Just knowing the basics of your body and what's normal & what's not, will give you a confidence you can't imagine. If you have teenage daughters, buy this book and read it together. It could save years of doubt, confusion and low-esteem. ... Read more

    Book Description

"The medicine of the new millennium."--Larry Dossey, M.D., author of Healing Words

Dr. Mehmet Oz, celebrated heart surgeon and co-founder of the Complementary Care Center at New York's Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital, is spearheading the health-care revolution that is yielding powerful new healing tools that will forever change the way we think of medicine. In this ground-breaking book, he describes his pioneering work--combining cutting-edge Western medicine with such Eastern techniques as acupuncture and chi-gong, as well as such controversial therapies as hypnosis, music, massage, reflexology, aromatherapy, and energy healing. The inspiring and affecting stories of his patients are the heart of this book--from the extraordinary discipline of Frank Torre, who used his professional sports training to "psych" himself into healing after heart transplant surgery, to the "impossible" recovery of blues great Johnny Copeland, who was roused from a seemingly impenetrable coma through the force of his own music. In recounting his patients' experiences, Dr. Oz forges a blueprint for the radical new medicine of the next millennium--drawing on the best from Eastern and Western therapies and empowering patients to become partners with doctors in promoting their own recovery.

5-0 out of 5 stars YES, a powerful voice for Medicine with Hope and Warmth!
An inspiring doctor with a powerful but gentle voice. The more medicine opens up like this the better we are all going to be. I think everyone should read this book. Also HIGHLY RECOMMENDED is "Effortless Wellbeing: The Missing Ingredients for Authentic Wellness" by Evan Finer. Though not a medical book, it is a concise and extremely powerful guide to compliment any healing program, to induce true wellness and to help regain personal strength. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED READING. Thank you to the authors!!

4-0 out of 5 stars The Medicine of the Future
Dr. Oz is an accomplished heart surgeon in the field of cardiac transplantation. He describes how he combines complementary medicine (e.g. hypnosis, reflexology, yoga, message, acupuncture. Etc) with orthodox Western medicine. There is an excellent forward by Dr Dean Ornish, and an interesting epilogue containing an overview of the complementary medicine techniques. The bulk of the book contains stories of patients Dr. Oz treated using this revolutionary way. I am a cardiologist, and I have a great interest in combining western medicine with complementary medicine, which is the reason I bought this book. However this book was a bit boring to read and was also a bit of a disappointment. Nevertheless, those interested in this new medicine, which I think will be the medicine of the new millennium, will want to read this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC BOOK - SUPERBLY WRITTEN!
What is impressive about this book is the author's concepts of healing both heart and mind as he points out just how closely the two are interconnected. The writing style is one that will grasp the reader's attention from start to finish. The approach to holistic health is a welcome approach to healing. It is a concept that is gradually increasing in the health care field, but one that still has a long way to go before it is universally accepted by all physicians. More education and information needs to be provided in this area to all health care providers. Using the holistic approach, there can be fewer side effects from medication, less depression and a general feeling of well being during the most trying and difficult times. There is much to be said on combining Western and Eastern traditions in the process of healing. Our world can benefit dramatically from this approach and the author vividly explains why throughout the pages of this well-researched and superbly written book. It is highly recommended reading material and most deserving of a five star rating.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book of the year
A great book describing an insiders view of what total healing can mean in today's complex medical care system. The book has deservedly won the Books for Better America award for Best Wellness Book of the Year and should be required reading for all patients contemplating surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book was fantastic - for the sick and healthy alike.
Dr. Mehmet has given me a new perspective on holistic health and disease. As my mother is going through the breast cancer battle, I am incorporating many of his suggestions for heart patients: soothing music after the mastectomy, foot massages as she fades in and out of conciousness, arranging to have someone loved at the bedside constantly. I am looking into getting a masseuse to come in and perform foot massage as her body receives chemotherapy. As a result of this, her attitude is positive and I believe that has a grave impact on how her body reacts to all of this trauma. I'm waiting impatiently for his next book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Problem handled!
Thank you, Dr.Clark! This book should be the bible of every single medical professional and it should be required reading for every single med student. The medical community looks really barbaric when you see the results from the simple handling methods Dr. Clark outlines. For me, I've been plauged with a very serious chemical sensitivity for years; carpet odors, clothes detergents, soaps, paint smell, etc. I've also been experiencing a number of food allergies that made my sentivity worse when I'd eat those foods. A buddy of mine suggested that I do Dr. Clark's "liver flush". What came out of my liver was...well, unbelievable. Dozens of major sized green stones, hundreds and hundreds of small pea sized stones and lots of yellow mush. In the days that followed, the things that bothered me suddenly didn't bother me anymore. I've even been able to eat many of the foods again that heightened my sensitivities like potatoes and dairy. THANK YOU, Dr. Clark!! Problem handled!!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will absolutely change your life!
I am a teacher from Indiana and have been "into" self-help for some 22 years, ie: homeopathic medicines, bio-feedback, better nutrition, etc. My father died of Lou Grehrig's Disease (ALS) and my seemingly "very healthy" sister died of cancer at 41, so this prompted me to look constantly for better information and up-to-date self-help ideas. Then 2 1/2 years ago a friend told me about Dr. Clark's ideas and about this book. It has dramatically changed my beliefs and my practices about staying healthy! I immediately built a "zapper" and yes, it sounded too "hokey" to be true. My first true test came the day I came home from school "coming down" with strep throat that was going around at school. My son had a varsity basketball game that night that I couldn't miss, so I "zapped" all the way to the game, 45 miles away. As I went into the gym I realized my symptoms were gone and I honestly felt good! I have not progressed into a cold, flu, or illness for 2 1/2 years since using the zapper. My husband has even become a believer (and he is the ultimate SKEPTIC!) I have also followed Clark's suggestions for removing the amalgam fillings from my teeth (both my father and my sister were completely "filled up" with silver amalgams and I was too!) It's taken me 2 years, and THANK GOD the dentist that Dr. Clark recommends, Dr. Jerome, lives in Columbus, IN, just 35 miles away! I can tell my health constantly improves as the fillings go! Also, Dr. Clark's explanations about parasites make very good sense. I've been keeping a log of the people in our community who have chronic illnesses or have died of cancer, and in practically every single case these people have pets INSIDE the home. It makes me want to share this incredible book with all of these unsuspecting families! Please buy this book to share with your family - it can save your life and theirs!

As a diabetic , With only 1 week into beginning of the program, I can see a dramatic improvement with my sugar levels.

I would recommend this book to anyone interested in total health.

3-0 out of 5 stars How not to get sick
I zapped and rifed and detoxed and it helped some I guess. But, is there a better way? Can stinking thinking get us sick in the first place? For healing of the soul first, check out "Deadly emotions" by Dr. Don Colbert and "A More Excellent Way" by Henry Wright. These books talk about biblical pronciples -- but don't let that scare you off. They work no matter hwat you believe.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tim's been busy
With all the positive reviews for this labarynth of lies I assume Hulda Clark's publicist, Tim Bolen has been sending in multiple reviews. It can't be real cancer patients sending in reviews, they all die of cancer.

If Hulda Clark is correct, then why not cure people of cancer in the US? Why not allow the system to be clinically trialled? If it's financial reward she seeks, proving her system works will lead to a nobel prize which has a $1,000,000. In fact she would likely win multiple nobel prizes.

This clear and valuable book dispels a variety of myths about attention deficit disorder (ADD). Since both authors have ADD themselves, and both are successful medical professionals, perhaps there's no surprise that the two myths they attack most persistently are: (a) that ADD is an issue only for children; and (b) that ADD corresponds simply to limited intelligence or limited self-discipline. "The word disorder puts the syndrome entirely in the domain of pathology, where it should not entirely be. Although ADD can generate a host of problems, there are also advantages to having it, advantages that this book will stress, such as high energy, intuitiveness, creativity, and enthusiasm, and they are completely overlooked by the 'disorder' model."The authors go on to cite Mozart and Einstein as examples of probable ADD sufferers. (The problem as they see it is not so much attention deficit but attention inconsistency: "Most of us with ADD can in fact hyperfocus at times.") Although they warn against overdiagnosis, they also do a convincing job of answering the criticism that "everybody, and therefore nobody" has ADD. Using numerous case studies and a discussion of the way ADD intersects with other conditions (e.g., depression, substance abuse, and obsessive-compulsive disorder), they paint a concrete picture of the syndrome's realities. Especially helpful are the lists of tips for dealing with ADD in a child, a partner, or a family member.--Richard Farr ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A superbly balanced and rigorous text for all readers
Whether lay public or professionals in the field, this is the best book you'll find on Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). I treat patients who have ADD; many come bearing a well-marked copy of this book to say they've found themselves in it. To the others, I routinely recommend they read it before we finalize the diagnosis or decide on treatment. The tone throughout is rigorously scientific yet informal, relatively free of jargon, approachable by anyone with a high school education, and very supportive to the sufferer without being patronizing. It contains no propaganda, a rare virtue in books about ADD. Although written by physicians (who themselves are sufferers), it does not shill for medication management at the expense of alternative treatments that have been scientifically validated as effective. This is the ideal book for sufferers and their families, for teachers and those who evaluate the learning problems of children and adults, and for all health care providers. For those who find it hard to read, another book by these authors, Answers to Distraction, is written in an easier, sound bite format. Both books are available on audiotape, often the best way for the ADDers to "read".

5-0 out of 5 stars Gives new meaning to "We Are Not Alone"
This superbly compiled work was actually used by an M.D. as a substantial part of the dignostic process in evaluating possible ADD syndrome. Having read many self-help books trying to deal with personal trials and foibles, this book HIT HOME! Written by two psychologists who personally experience the frustrations of living with adult ADD, this title made for compelling reading. Imagine finding a description of yourself on every other page!!?? Concise, but personable case studies reveal numerous commonalities amongst ADDers. Rounded out with a detailed history of the discovery of ADD, the research pioneers, treatment plans, hope for the future, and a well thought out section on Resources, including support groups, newsletters, etc. Just Read It!

5-0 out of 5 stars The ONE & ONLY BOOK you need to read on the subject!
After finding out that my youngest son had ADHD, I picked up this book and started reading. It was almost like looking into a mirror that showed my life: Further, it described many people in my family! I went to a Stanford psychiatrist for input and am now taking Ritalin. This book may have actually saved my life: I now understand my need for change, my attraction to violence, my Type-A behavior, even my claustrophobia--everything. It was as heartbreaking as it was a relief to find out that there was a name for what I was going through--that there was help available--and most important, that I was not alone. I will have to deal with this affliction for the rest of my life. If you or anyone you know may have either of these maddening disorders, please help by reading this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Flowery nonsense
If you've already been down the typical path with your child, namely: (1) Child has a problem in school, (2) Child fidgets in front of school "psychologist," (3) Referred to local pediatric physician, (4) received script for psychostimulants, and (5) started giving child the drugs, you'll like this book. It will make you feel good about yourself, your parenting style, and your decision.

At least give yourself the chance to see the other side of the story. You only have one child - read the book "Unraveling the ADD/ADHD Fiasco" by David B. Stein, Ph.D. If you are still convinced that the drug route is the way to go, follow the "1-2-3 Magic" types of parenting techniques (or have a "family meeting" and solicit input from your little child who has no tools to solve this problem), and when that doesn't work, administer the drugs.

OK - I've probably made some folks angry, and I'll concede that there are a relatively small percentage of children and adults that suffer from disorders (with symptoms like those attributed to ADD/ADHD) that are improved through these drugs, including Ritalin. But, keep in mind that in some schools 50% of the male childern are "ADHD" diagnosed and on Ritalin or similar drugs. No one in their right mind could possibly believe that 50% of children have something called ADD/ADHD that requires treatment with Schedule 2 drugs.

I'm not writing for those few percent that maybe have a real disease that is helped by drugs. I'm writing for the 95% of children who are on Ritalin and don't need to be. This book will lead you in a direction that your child doesn't necessarily need to go.

By the way, the book never mentions that Ritalin and similar medicines are "Schedule II" drugs, or what these are. As a parent, I hope you'll ask your doctor - or better still - do your own research on what Ritalin does in the body and its addictive and abuse potential.

Rebut this information if you wish, but I didn't see anything in this book expressing outrage over 33 - 50% of little children being forced to take addictive drugs because some counseler, teacher, parent and doctor didn't want to do some hard work and rule out that the child's behavior can possibly be remedied by something other than drugs.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my career and my family
I have had problems all my life, some described in this book and some described by the other people who wrote a review of this book. My wife and I were attending marriage counseling because of my short temper. After a few sessions our therapist said she thought I had ADD which I quickly dismissed even though my younder brother was diagnosed with ADD early in his life. After a few more years of trying to convince me, after trying all kinds of self help, after attending anger management classes, our therapist finally recommended this book. I read parts and reread parts and reread parts (others with ADD will understand this) and finally, I got to the "test" in the back of the book. 100 yes/no questions, the more yes answers the more likely you are to have ADD. I took it and after restarting 4 or 5 times finally finished the test with a score of 80. For a baseline I had my wife take it. She scored 18. Not a diagnosis but enough for me to make an appointment with a psychiatrist. Almost 2 years later I am taking ADD medication and my temper is gone, my work productivity and my ability to complete projects has greatly improved. And most importantly I and my family have a new outlook on life. Everyone is happier, especially me. ... Read more

Healing Back Pain promises permanent elimination of back pain without drugs, surgery, or exercise. It should have been titled Understanding TMS Pain, because it discusses one particular cause of back pain--Tension Myositis Syndrome (TMS)--and isn't really a program for self-treatment, with only five pages of action plan (and many more pages telling why conventional methods don't work). According to John E. Sarno, M.D., TMS is the major cause of pain in the back, neck, shoulders, buttocks, and limbs--and it is caused not by structural abnormalities but by the mind's effort to repress emotions. He's not saying that your pain is all in your head; rather, he's saying that the battle going on in your mind results in a real physical disorder that may affect muscles, nerves, tendons, or ligaments. An injury may have triggered the disorder, but is not the cause of the amount or intensity of the resulting pain. According to Sarno, the mind tricks you into not facing repressed emotion by making you focus on pain in the body. When this realization sinks in ("and it must sink in, for mere intellectual appreciation of the process is not enough"), the trick doesn't work any more, and there's no need for the pain. 5-0 out of 5 stars This book transformed my life
I've always considered myself the most skeptical of skeptics, but Dr. Sarno has earned my lifelong gratitude. I've suffered from severe, chronic back pain ever since I was attacked by a combative mental patient when I working as an R.N. This book liberated me. Since I read it, I've been Advil and Tylenol free for over a month, I've returned to lifting anything I want, doing vigorous aerobics, jazz dancing, and most important of all, I'm able to sit when I work (I'm now a writer), when I'd been forced to stand and write for months now due to the pain. Yes, the book is a little like Tinkerbell. You have to believe for it to work. But Dr. Sarno's common sense theories had the ring of truth for me from the first time I read them. I realize now that my accident wasn't the "cause" of my pain, it was the "trigger" and that has made all the difference in my life. Give this book a try! It's been an answer to my most fervent prayers for me.

4-0 out of 5 stars FASCINATING THEORY, NOT MUCH INFO ON IMPLEMENTING
I found Dr. Sarno's theories regarding the epidemic of back pain to be incredibly innovative, yet making a lot of sense. I read the book after seeing Dr. Sarno's interview with broadcast journalist John Stossel (who related his own success after treatment by Dr. Sarno, to the skepticism of his MD brother, who was also on the show) and after I had tried every treatment available short of surgery for disc herniation (lumbar) and "severe disc degeneration" (cervical). I even had a morphine pump surgically implanted to deliver non-systemic morphine to my lumbar discs 24 hours per day, with minimal success, and still must take massive doses of oral pain meds and muscle relaxants to get through the day, so I was ready to try anything.... My complaint with this book is that very little information is given on implementing Dr. Sarno's theories. He articulates what he states is a new diagnosis for back pain: Tension Myositis Syndrome, or TMS, which is basically that back pain results from the brain subliminally causing the pain to distract patients from psychological distress; particularly convincing was his observation that thousands of people have herniated discs and other structural problems detectable by an MRI but never suffer any pain. His main treatment as set forth in the book, primarily from the experiences of his patients, seems to be to "talk to your brain" and let it know that you know what it is doing. I just can't get the hang of talking to my brain or any of the other exercises offered as successful by the patients quoted. When I called Dr. Sarno's office -- because his primary suggested method of treatment is to attend his lectures -- a message simply gave the names of doctors, none near me, who treat back pain using his methodology. I further left a NY area phone number, as he requested for those who live near the Big Apple, and indicated that I would travel to NYC for treatment, and there was never a response. Thus, I highly recommend the book for its theory of the cause of back pain, but do not read this book expecting to receive much information on the how-to of achieving cure through Dr. Sarno's methods. This left me hanging, and highly disappointed....Nonetheless, I would recommend that any sufferer of chronic back pain read the book for the theories, SOMEONE is bound to come out with a book which gives more information on implementing a cure for TMS. The book is certainly worth the purchase price for the glimmer of hope it provides.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Works and Should Be Required Reading
Several years ago I was off work for nine months because of what the doctors diagnosed as repetitive motion and then disc problems. AFTER major sugery, when they told me I'd be out of work and in excruciating pain the rest of my life, I found this book--it was next to one of those "how to live with excruciating pain" books.

Within two hours of starting to read Dr. Sarno's Healing Back Pain I could turn my neck. Within two weeks the pain was completely gone, and I've been a ball of fire since. I wish I could thank him in person. Buy this book, if you can, do it before you commit to major surgery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Healing Back Pain by Sarno
This book links the mind and pain sensations to the gastrointestinal tract. There is an association between the pain signals and the gastrointestinal tract; however, the curative
result is in controlling inflammation. The author provides a good
analysis of peripheral nerve involvement in the management of
pain. Specific coping strategies are cited, as well as
testimonials in the form of numerous letters from satisfied
followers and adherents. The author cites Vitamin C in megadoses
as a preferred treatment option. He relates pain to specific
anger as an undercurrent which magnifies the pain sensations
in proportion to the degree of anger/resentment present.
The author describes the oxygen deprivation in muscles and
specific trigger points for pain. These ideas complement
existing knowledge in conventional medicine,as well as
    known oxygen therapies in Europe.

5-0 out of 5 stars Still doing great after five years!
I like to check in every now and then with my progress and I have to say that since reading this book and implementing its suggestions in 1999, I have been free of back pain for five years. I NEVER take it for granted. I biked 35 miles just today without so much as a twinge. I had suffered with back pain for ten years after being attacked by a combative patient at work (I was a psych nurse) so it was pretty much a miracle to stumble on Dr. Sarno's book and his theories. I'm an incredibly practical person who tends to pooh-pooh a lot of holistic medicine, but these theories are based on common sense. If I ever feel even a twinge of discomfort, usually re-reading the Prologue is enough to make me better. Thank you, Dr. Sarno, for changing my life! ... Read more

    Book Description

Where can a woman turn when her own life threatens to overwhelm her ability to keep her children safe? New York Times bestselling author Jacquelyn Mitchard takes the readers of her newest novel on a wry and moving journey of loss and healing.

Giving advice is what Julieanne does for a living -- every Sunday she doles it out to clueless people she doesn't know, in a column in her local Wisconsin paper. But when it comes to her personal life, Julie herself seems to have missed some clues. Having worked creatively to keep her twenty-year marriage to Leo fresh and exciting, she is completely caught off guard when he tells her he needs to go on a "sabbatical" from their life together, leaving Julie and their three children -- Gabe, Caroline, and Aury -- behind. But it soon becomes clear that his leave of absence is meant to be permanent. The succeeding months are filled with a confusion and sadness that shake the core of the entire family. Things take a turn for the worse when Julie is diagnosed with a serious illness and the children undertake a dangerous journey to find Leo -- before it's too late. As the known world sinks precariously from view, the clan must navigate its way through the shoals of love, guilt, and betrayal. Together, with the help of Leo's parents and Julie's best friend, Cathy, they work their way back to solid ground and a new definition of family.

No one illuminates modern love, marriage, and parenting better than Jacquelyn Mitchard. Written with her trademark poignancy, humor, and insight, The Breakdown Lane is her most moving, eloquent, and life-affirming work yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!!!!!!
This book blew me away!I like the author already but I purchased the book because of the subject matter. Like the character, Julieanne, I also have MS and was diagnosed at age 43.

The story is so poignant and I could feel the characters just jump off the page.

It is a story of one woman's battle with the sudden desertion of her husband of whom she has been with since she was a very young woman. Then finding herself with three children to take care of herself and being diagnosed with MS.

She has to fight this monster of a deisease plus the feeling of abandonment. It is told from her point of view and her son, Gabe, who is 14 at the time and educationally challenged.

I could go on and on.....but just read it.You don't have to have a chronic illness or even a crummy ex husband to appreciate this author and her style of writing.

This story is told with truth and humor and tugs at the heartstrings as well. Read It, It's fantastic!

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb novel
A wonderful, gripping novel. Real charcters; real situations; real life.

Okay--maybe just a LITTLE richer than strictly real. But not by much.

Which is exactly what we want from our best novels, no?

Mitchard is a master. Might as well go with your heart, and submit. If you do, you'll be treated very, very well. This is, after all, a writer who knows a thing or two about how best to treat the human heart. And if in her work it ever showed, it's here.

3-0 out of 5 stars a good read, if not a great novel
Jacquelyn Mitchard's The Breakdown Lane is an entertaining read, full of emotions, but in the end it leaves the reader feeling cheated.
It starts out as the story of Julianne, who loses her husband, her health, and almost her job and her children and it is here that Mitchard's skill is apparent. She gets to the heart of every situation, leaving the reader with no doubt as to what every character is feeling. Julianne's son Gabe is especially well written, and a character that will stay with you for a long time after you've finished reading.
However, Mitchard ties the ending up in a neat little bow that doesn't ring true. What began as a wrenching, painful, yet absorbing read, dissolves into a generic white knight to the rescue ending. It left me thinking that Julieanne's situation deserved a better, more realistic resolution than the one she got.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Honest, Moving Novel
I really loved this book. I won't go into details of the plot, amazon and the other reviewers have done that already, but I just want fans of Ms. Mitchard's Deep End of the Ocean to give this one a try. I have not loved all of her other books since Deep End, so I wasn't sure about reading this one but the other Amazon reviews sparked my interest.
The writing was honest and real, the characters had their flaws and blemishes, just like real people. Most of the time, a book about a woman who gets dumped, has children and has an illness, is made out to be a saint, an angel, a hero. Well, not here. She is real....As I got to the end, I was concerned about the way the story was going, everything tied up with a bow, nice and neat, I was afraid Ms. Mitchard was giving into happy ever after land...but she didn't. Even the ending was like real life, not perfect.
Once I started this book, I couldn't put it down, give it a try, I think you will be glad you did.

3-0 out of 5 stars It was ok...
I gave this book 3 stars because it definately held my interest, but I would put it on the level with 12 Times Blessed-nowhere near the quality of Deep End of the Ocean.

The story pulls at your heart strings (rotten husband leaving his wife and three kids for a new life-just as his wife gets sick). But I found a lot of the conversations a bit contrived, and the story became implausible as the book went on (dumped and sick and her eigth grade crush who turns out to be a doctor magically turns up...you can probably guess the rest).

It's definatly hard to put down, more of a light reading kinda like Danielle Steele. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is for your Entire Family; it is a survival guide.
When our family first learned that our Mother had Alzheimer disease, we were devastated. After we all read "The 36-Hour Day", there was a great deal of relief. Although Alzhemier and other dementing illnesses can seem catastrophic, this book reads like a freindly family doctor givng you straight forward, no-nonsense advice. It covers all aspects of dealing with the family member, from explaining just what dementia is and how it can appear, to how you can deal with it appropriately without losing your patience or embarrasing your family member. Medical help, daily care, medical problems, behavior, mood, legal issues, common compassion and basic 'rules of thumb' are thoroughly covered. Several "examples" of previous family incidents are mentioned with thoughts on how to address each and every one. Great care has been crafted into this book and I highly recommend it. You will feel better, thus making the family member you are helping feel better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides direction and help for caretakers and loved ones
A truly remarkable book. It is well written, and very easy to read and follow, providing a background in this disease and what can/will happen to those afflicted. Providing extremely helpful insights and strategies for those of us who are caregivers, spouses, sons, daughters, and other family and friends. Personally, this book helped me to understand what was happening to my mother, helped me to be more understanding and less frustrated and annoyed with her. This book provides a great deal of insight and allows the reader to get a "feel" for the current situation and possible future situations. I have recommended this book to my personal physician to pass along to her other patients who may be in the same position as I am.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Answers I Have Been Searching For
It doesn't give medical advice, it doesn't give technical advice, although it provides resources for seeking such advice. What it does give are explanations and insights into the thinking of brain impaired persons, explanations for their behaviors, and advice on how to manage and cope with being their caregiver.

These are exactly the answers I have been searching for. So many of my father's actions, reactions and behaviors are profiled in this book, and it's becoming clear that his decline had started many years ago with smaller incidents that we as his family had dismissed. The path of progression can be tracked, and even predicted. It will be helpful to know what's coming next and be prepared. But most important to me is the understanding of why. Being able to understand the why of his behavior helps me a great deal in being able to let go of the anger and to cope better with the situation that has recently escalated to horrific.

In trying to manage the situation I have started taking anti-anxiety meds, as well as antidepressants and high blood pressure med. I have done all that I can to make changes within myself, yet things have gotten progressively worse. I am beginning to understand that these changes have been part of the problem in a sense in that I have become "unpredictable" to him in not reacting the way he expects me to.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Fairly Clinical Approach to Alzheimer's Caregiving
More than 3 million Americans are currently over 80 years old, and their numbers are expected to double by 2025. As the number of very old expands, the incidence of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia will increase proportionately. Already at least 1 in 4 Americans cares for an elderly relative; in just a few years, a greater proportion will assume the mantle of caregiver to a dementia patient.

I do not find this thought comfortable, nor did I find The 36-Hour Day comfortable reading. As the caregiver of an elderly person with Alzheimer's, I found this volume helpful with specific problems that often accompany Alzheimer's disease but much in need of updating in other areas, such as caring for the caregiver. Going to a counselor or buying a new dress may have been reasonable options in 1999. For many caregivers in 2004, they are too expensive to be considered.

Recommended primarily as an overview of what to expect with specific dementia-related problems.

5-0 out of 5 stars Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Caregiving
Highly recommended, an excellent resource, a must-have when beginning the caregiving journey with a loved one with dementia. This book has been out for many years, is updated often, and continues to be one of the very best. It was one of the books that helped me when I had to care for my parents, both with dementia, and inspired me to write my own book, Elder Rage. ... Read more

Last summer I was in Austin, Texas during the end of the Tour de France attending the Texas Age Group Swimming Championships my younger brother was competing in. That city loves Lance and there wasn't a person in the streets who wasn't eager to talk about the Tour; yellow banners supporting him were more common than Texas flags, and anyone who knows Texas knows that that's saying a lot! Following that experience I knew I had to read this book and I wasn't disappointed in the least.

Having read the book, I can't regard Lance Armstrong as anything less than a miracle. He didn't survive cancer - he conquered it. He proved that a cancer diagnosis doesn't have to mean an end to anything unless you allow it to. This book is a very blunt and unapologetic account of his life before, during, and after his diagnosis and treatment. He's not the nicest guy ever, he's not the humblest guy ever, he's just a guy (who may or may not be the greatest cyclist in the world, it's not my sport, someone else will debate that).

If Lance Armstrong had never competed in another race again, his survival would still have been incredible. But he did compete, and he's sure to be a legend.

5-0 out of 5 stars No, It's Not About the Bike or Cancer. It's Pure Lance.
I know I'll catch it for this review. The book itself gets 5 stars from me. I enjoyed the read, I shed a few tears and I kept hoping that somewhere it would eventually turn Lance Armstrong into one of my heros. It never did. In fact, I pray to God I never meet Lance Armstrong and never get in his path, and I pray anyone who ever has to does survives the encounter. Sally Jenkins gets kudos on pulling off what was a difficult task. How to write his biography and story with him watching over her and to tell the truth. She did it. She pulled it off by writing between the lines like no other. She is truly the hero here. Make no mistake, the book is good, the hero is not. He is, without a doubt the single most arrogant and egotistical person I've ever read about in my life. I wanted him to be my hero so bad too. I have just gotten into cycling and was looking forward to having someone to watch, follow and emulate. Lance is not that guy. You'll read things that will blow you away. How he fully expected his French sponsor to pay him his 5 million dollar contract even when he was taking chemo and was not riding for them, they even offered to give him a contract, just not 5 million and he was outraged. He freaked on might having to sell his $300,000 worth of furniture and "art" to pay for his treatment. Why oh why have all forsaken poor Lance he wonders. Supposedly a boy that grew up on the wrong side of the tracks in Plano, Tx, but give me a break, there is no "wrong side" of the tracks in Plano. Even though he was only raised by his mother, it's obvious people took care of Lance. Riding his expensive cycles that were given to him out of the goodness of one man's heart, and then he doesn't speak to this guy for years on end. I could continue, but I think the world needs to read this book to learn about this. Lance's story is not over, he still hasn't learned what he probably was meant to learn. I do not suggest buying this book for someone with cancer or a teenager. It's not inspiring in the least, no one can afford what Lance had to get him through his terrible cancer ordeal. And, if a teen reads this, he or she will expect the world to give them everything on a silver platter just like Lance expects. One curious note I can't yet figure out. Never once does Lance tell the world he didn't check himself monthly for testicular cancer and that if he had, he could have caught it before it spread to his brain and lungs and recovery would have been comparably easy. With many pages devoted to pictures of he, his wife, his baby and mother not one single page printed a diagram on how to check yourself for testicular cancer. Seems a hero would have had that thought first and foremost in his head, especially since testicular cancer never has gotten the same PR as checking for breast cancer. I might read his other books. Maybe he's learned something along the way, but that is highly doubtful.

3-0 out of 5 stars A new focus for Armstrong..
I value Lance Armstrong's story, he is a driven and talented athlete who has had to battle through a life threatening illness. The story is incredible but you wish that Lance wouldn't be so in love with his own story!
Humility is the virtue that Lance needs most. Maybe that could be his next focus. I'm sure if he put his mind to it, he could tone down his ego. He accomplishes every thing he puts his mind too..... maybe improve his writing as well....

4-0 out of 5 stars It's not about the bike: It is about the being the best!
I am a beginner runner. I picked up this book because I wanted to know more about Lance Armstrong. This book has taught me how much mental and physical training are required to be the best, consistently. I have enjoyed reading this book because of the humor, the clear and direct expression of ideas, and Lance's candor in his failures and triumphs. I am sure I will pick it up and read it again periodically.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Bike is Not Important
There's nothing I can say that hasn't been said. A fantastic book about an interesting character that has little to do with sports and more to do with the human spirit. This book details Lance's early life as he addresses his cocky, immature nature that quickly goes out the window when he begins his cancer battle. Lance is alive because his is famous. His cancer was so aggressive and mature that IMO what saved him is the unsolicited email from the doctor at Vanderbilt that eventually led him to the doctors at Indiana University. I like sports and would never have read a book just about cancer survival but this book was so highly recommended and for good reason.

The book finishes with Lance mentally battling to get back on the bike and on to greater glory. There is much to learn here also but the one downer would be listening to him describing his ideal marriage when of course it has already broken up.

I CANNOT RECOMMEND THIS BOOK HIGHER. You will not be disappointed. And yes, you will start following the Tour de France. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has helped me to recovery from a painful condition
_Approximately five years ago I had a complete set of x-rays performed by an orthopedic surgeon, and was diagnosised with arthritis, painful heel spurs, and severe plantar fasciatis. Since that time I have tried all of the arthritis prescriptions, and I could not tolerate the side effects. Many visits later to a chiropractor and a poditrist I was still unable to be mobile without severe pain. Water aerobics seem to keep me active, but did not correct the problems. I have spent hundreds of dollars on orthoditics and corrective shoes and no relief.

As I walked into the public library one day my eyes fell on this book sitting on the shelf next to the check out stand. I could not believe my eyes since it seems to have been written especially for me. This coincidence put me on my road to recovery. I have been doing the exercises about six months now, and I feel a hundred percent better. I now have a copy of this book in my personal library. I feel it is very important to read the complete book, and to keep it handy for reference and inspiration. I have a new lease on life due to the discovery of this book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Egoscue's book appears both effective and economical.
After two sessions with Egoscue's exercises, I've still spent less than $25, I can hold my head straighter, and my uneven gait from mis-aligned hips is much improved. Two sessions at the physical therapist would have cost $36 in hot-packs alone, never mind the cost of actual therapy. And I would have been treated for the hip or the shoulder, but probably not both.

Egoscue recommends reading the introductory chapters, then moving to the chapters specific to your needs. This advice works well with one possible exception: you may miss the story about the woman so misaligned that after 45 minutes in a relaxed, static back posture, she went into muscle spasm. This story indicates that it might be wise for people with considerable pain or strong mis-alignment to have someone with them during the first days or weeks of doing these exercises, to begin with the minimum times recommended for each exercise, and to expect to take longer to reach maintenance.

Egoscue might also have provided directions on how to get up after lying in some of these positions: I've found it helps to pull my legs in toward my torso, then turn onto my side before I try raising my head and upper body.

All in all, Egoscue's book appears very helpful. I now have high hopes for my own recovery from various chronic muscle ailments and recommend the book (I'm getting ready to have Amazon.com mail a copy to my sister right now).

5-0 out of 5 stars Better than yoga for 35 year old runner with hip pain
I was on the verge of giving up running 4 miles several times a week due to hip pain. Yoga did not fix the problem. The hip routine reduced the pain noticeably the first day, and by the second day I only noticed the pain upon waking, before doing the exercises. I am on the fifth day, even the morning pain is fading, and I am able to run. My stride when running seems to be more efficient and shock-absorbing, because of the increased motion in my hip. It's more comfortable. I have been told twice that I am looking healthier than usual, which I think is due to my posture improving. I am also tending to sit up straighter at my desk. I'll still do yoga for muscle tone and balance, but Egoscue is the best for flexibility, and the exercises are easier than most yoga postures.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Michael L. Johnson
This is an excellent book! A true solution to chronic pain, not just hype and promises never kept. Egoscue is right on the money with his excercises. In my humble opinion, the exercises fire muscle spindle cells which are receptors in the muscles and joint mechano-receptors which are receptors in joints. Increasing the firing of receptors increases the firing of impulses to the brain. Increased impulses to brain equals less pain.

Dr. Michael L. Johnson author of "What Do You Do When the Medications Don't Work--A Non-Drug Treatment of Dizziness, Migraine Headaches, Fibromyalgia, and Other Chronic Conditions".

5-0 out of 5 stars FOOT PAIN GONE!!???
For about a year I was suffering from extreme foot pain. My foot didn't always hurt, but standing in certain positions I was incapable of bearing weight, my ankle would hurt so excruciatingly I would fall to the ground in pain. But as a full time mom of two small children, the time necessary to go to some Doctor was time I didn't know how to find. So I tried the Egoscue method. WELL it was a miracle. After a week of doing the exercises less than diligently and reducing the times on everythign considerably, the foot pain is GONE. I am beyond amazed. I've even purposefully stepped in ways used to hurt excruciatingly to see if they still did hurt, nope!!! I plan on halfheartedly doing the maintenance exercises. Here's hoping my neck and shoulder pain can be eradicated too!!! ... Read more

    5-0 out of 5 stars A God-send!!
I have one word for this book... incredible! The information given in this book is not only for the cancer patient, for but anyone who wants to stay healthy (thus preventing cancer). Dr. Quillin shares information for a healthy life in such a way that no one else ever has. One's spiritual life is renewed, as well as the physical. This is a MUST HAVE for every household.

I was diagnosed with inoperable liver cancer in October of 1999 at the age of 22. Told by numerous doctors that there was "no hope." Severe back pain and a total lack of energy kept me in bed for most of the day... weight loss was rapid. I began chemo in spite of little precedence for success in using chemo in liver cancer. One month after diagnosis, began using Immunopower (the nutritional supplement developed by Dr. Patrick Quillin). Within one month my health took a dramatic upward turn. By January of 2000 the tumor had shrunk by 50%. Two months later, it had diminished by half again. I am now totally healed... a cancer survivor. Thank you God and thank you Dr. Quillin for such an incredible book! BEATING CANCER WITH NUTRITION played an important role in my healing.

5-0 out of 5 stars Welcome to your new bible
If the Head of Nutrition of the Cancer Institutes of America says something, you have to think he knows what he's talking about. If Linus Pauling says the information in this book is clinically proven, you have to listen! A person hit with a cancer diagnosis is initially lost, scared, and relying completely on his/her MD. That MD is probably an excellent mechanic, vital in the process, but has probably had zero training in nutrition or immunotherapy. He may even look askance at alternative and foreign medicine. Also, alternative, vitamin, supplement, nutrition, immune system information is scattered, word of mouth, attacked by the FDA, confusing. NO MORE. This book Organizes and presents all this disparate material, cites research, tells you what you need to be doing Now. It goes much further. The sections on misconceptions, toxic vitamin doses, best-to-bad foods are invaluable. The executive summary at the front is a great idea, the boxed stories of cures and the motivational blurb are written by a man who really cares and knows this stuff works. Finally, not all your food has to go through a blender, Thank you, Noreen. This is a wonderful book, your roadmap for taking charge of your health and defeating your illness. Buy it immediatly, get out some paperclips and a highlighter and change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars beating cancer the natural way!
Forget toxic and ineffective chemo and radiation therapy! This book shows you how to use food and nutritional supplements to beat cancer. This approach isnt always successful and cures arent guaranteed, but it often works when conventional toxic treatments fail. The body has a remarkable ability to heal itself if you give it the nutritional fortification it needs. This book shows you how.

5-0 out of 5 stars It' worth it!
Beating cancer with nutrition is giving the reader all the background information about cancer and how to best fight it. In addition, Dr. Quillin outlines his approach for nutritional therapy. The reader can choose to buy the supplements seperately or can buy Immunopower, a combination of powder (for shakes) and pills. Yes, Immunopower has been developed by Dr. Quillin and is quiet expensive. But buying seperately (and I have tried to do this) is even more expensive. Unfortunately, cancer is not an easy or cheap disease to fight. Dr. Quillin talks a lot about Immunopower in his book, but only because it truly is the best thing out there to fight cancer.
I was diagnosed with Stage II breast cancer in Sept. 2002. At the time, I only underwent chemo without any additional nutrition therapy. My cancer metastasized and by January of 2004 I was back in chemo. This time, I had met some increadible cancer patients who had battled cancer with the help of Immunopower. I started to take the supplements myself right away. My tumor has since dissapeared!! My doctor called it highly unusual. I am 38 years old, mother of a 5 and a 9 year old boy. My doctor initially felt, that I might at most have 2 years more to live. He is now more confident than even I am, that I will live to see my own grandchildren. My husband is now taking ImmunopwerEZ, just as an insurance.
Health, unfortunately, is not cheap, but rather worth every last penny.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great but....
I was just recently diagnosed with cancer and Pat provides some great nutritional information, but when he starts promoting his high priced, high powered immunopower supplement it makes me wonder just what his motives are. Selling his supplements or helping cancer victims. I doubt most cancer patients will be able afford the price of Pat's supplements. Com'on Pat we are dying here. Give us break - a price break. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars This book saved my back!
About six months ago I was doing quite a lot of weight lifting which was slowly weakening my back. Being on the high school track team I decided to try the running long jump for the first time. When I landed in the sand my lower back gave out and for the next six months I had a dull pain that would stay with me all day, everyday. Some Days my back felt better than others and sometimes it seemed that the only retreat I possibly had from the pain was bed rest. I spent an incredible waste of money on chiropractors that did absolutely nothing for the pain. I was beginning to become depressed because I couldn't do cross country in the fall, and going to work and school felt like going to hell and back everyday. I felt like I was too young to have back problems and I was seeking advice from everyone I could turn to. Then a student teacher of mine told me that a friend of his was using Robin McKenzie's book on how to treat your own back. It took about four or five weeks for the pain to go away, but if I hadn't discovered this book, I'm sure the pain would have lasted many more months, if not years. McKenzie's book tought me very effective techniques for treating my lower back pain and how to prevent it from reocurring. If you buy this book, it is important to be patient with the techniques described. When first starting out, there should be an initial increase in the amount of pain which I experienced. If this pain increase does not go back down to how it was after about a day or if the pain becomes worse, consult with a doctor or physical therapist immediately. This was a very helpful book and I recommend it to anyone with lower back pain. It wasn't untill my back was damaged that my whole life cam into perspective. Nobody should deserve to live with chronic back pain.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended by Physical Therapist
I am a Physical Therapist who uses the McKenzie approach to low back and neck pain. I was introduced to the techniques during one of my clicical affiliations as a student. I can honestly say that there have been very few patients that I have treated that have not been able to find relief with this technique. "Treat Your Own Back" is a wonderful resource that I issue to the majority of my patients in conjunction with their treatment and home exercise program. The book includes a basic, but thorough review of spinal anatomy. Also has very easy to understand text accompanied by pictures explaining the text. I highly recommend this book; however, if one does not achieve relief with this technique, or if thier symptoms increase or travel to another area, it is crucial that they consult with their physician and/or physical therapist.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Here's what I think...
Book discusses a very specific way of treating back pain. In short, you do these backward bending motions which is suppose to have an effect on the discs in your spine. In addition, you sit up straight and watch your posture. All in all, it didn't help me much, but I do know many people it has helped- so I say give it a try. Also liked "Treat Your Own Knees" if you have knee pain.

4-0 out of 5 stars What is this total quack stuff?
This was a great book from a patients perspective of the lower back mechanics in an acute pain phase. Despite the ? review above from one Brownyn Scot, who reviews the book with the header 'a total quack' I would have to remark that the uneducated, myself included, have too much free space on the Internet to say supposedly learned things of which they know not, except definately crock pots :) The book helped. Enough said.

1-0 out of 5 stars A total quack
I used Robin's technique to help my sciatica when I was in my 20s. Now, 20 years later, a physical therapist asks how I messed up my posture so badly. When she heard that I used Robin's techniques she said it was too bad. That Robin has messed up many people's backs. Now I have severe arthritis between my shoulder blades from having such horrible posture for the past 20 years. Save yourself and get a recommendation to a respected physical therapist instead. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A great account of close calls and tense trials with viruses
I think that Richard Preston deserves all five stars for this thrilling book on real life experiences with deadly Ebola Viruses. He took an accumulation of true stories and turned it into an interesting and spellbinding book that hardly seems true. This book is easy to follow, even though the whole is scientific. Preston balanced the scientific language and factuality with an interesting plot and rounded characters as in a fictional book. Preston went into painstaking details to turn the Reston operation and other experiments into lament terms that all readers might comprehend. His magnificent writing style also came through in his account of nurse Mayinga's journey through the city and how catastrophic the event actually might have been. I really enjoyed the amount of effort Preston put forth in describing what Ebola and Marburg actually do to the body, prior to and during death. Although the book was very good, I do think that Richard Preston might have left out the entire fourth part. It had no real influence on the situation at Kitum Cave or what the reader thought of Africa. With all things considered, I strongly advise this book be read by everyone and I will certainly recommend this book to everybody I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Entering the "Hot Zone"
It starts with a simple headache. Then maybe you get a nosebleed. After a few days, you know you are extremely sick. The lining of your stomach and the top layer of your tongue literally fall off. Your organs turn into mush. Excessive bleeding from every natural opening in your body occurs. And since your blood can't clot, the bleeding won't stop. Black vomit mixed with blood gushes from your mouth. Then, you die painfully with a mask-like expression on your face.

This doesn't even sound like it could exist, does it? Well it does. It is death by a virus known as Ebola. It is especially contagious in monkeys and can jump species over to humans.

The Hot Zone, by Richard Preston, describes outbreaks of this and other "hot" viruses in locations around the world, including a city near Washington, D.C. Virus experts in the Army need to unravel the Ebola mystery and try to protect the public from this vicious disease.

Preston has taken a true story and unveiled its horror. I couldn't believe how descriptive his writing is. If you want to read a true modern day thriller, then this is an awesome pick. I highly recommend it and am looking forward to reading more from Richard Preston.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Read!
After months of stuffy old British classics we read THE HOT ZONE by Richard Preston in my sophomore English class. What a breath of fresh air! The book reads like a novel, but is full of fascinating information about ebola. Whether you're a biology buff or just want a good beach read, this is a great book. I highly recommend this(...)

This book happened to be my Physics book to read and i thought it would just be some people trying to track down this deadly virus. I thought it would all be fiction and i'd wright a report and get a good grade. Turns out, this book is fiction, one of the scariest books i've read, and one of the few books that at parts i couldn't put down!

Some parts didn't appeal to me as much as others (Thats why i give it a 4). I really liked the book and will encourage people to read it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cant put this down; master thriller story
This is one of the most exciting books you will ever read. And the scary thing is that the story is true. This page-turner will grip you from the onset and leave you will a chill down yor spine when you realize the nature of the world of virology.

Preston makes the story flow well from beginning to end. He makes feel like you are right in the middle of the story .. almost like you have a role to play. It wont take you long to read this book, and it is written in a comfortable style.

Anyone with an interest in viruses, microbiology, public health, or who just want a good reality thriller should read this book. You will not be disappointed! ... Read more

    Book Description

At last! This special cookbook puts flavor and choice back on the menu for people with diabetes and their families
Betty Crocker, America's most trusted friend in the kitchen, has teamed up with the International Diabetes Center (IDC)--one of the leading medical centers--to create an indispensable source of easy-to-make recipes and up-to-the-minute food and nutrition information for the growing numbers of people who have diabetes, more than 15 million of them.
Here is the first cookbook to include recipes featuring Carbohydrate Choices--the new, simplified approach to meal planning recommended by the American Diabetes Association. For people who find diet exchanges too hard, too limiting or too much work, this new method is a real breakthrough. Each of the book's 140 recipes shows the number of Carbohydrate Choices per serving, so that planning the rest of the meal is easy. From Old-Time Beef and Vegetable Stew to Creamy Vanilla-Caramel Cheesecake, the recipes are made with everyday ingredients, including sugar. No food groups or ingredients are left out, so there's no need for anyone to feel deprived or restricted to a special diet. Food exchanges are also included, making it easy for those who still count calories.
Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook is also packed with expert medical and nutrition tips from Dr. Richard Bergenstal, an endocrinologist and diabetes doctor, and two registered nurses--invaluable for the newly diagnosed as well as for those who have been coping with diabetes for years. Throughout the book, real-life advice from people who have diabetes offers inspiration and great ideas on dealing with this chronic disease. When it comes to eating and living with diabetes, people need guidance and advice they can trust.

5-0 out of 5 stars Yummy foods, good advice
The folks at Betty Crocker have done it again: given us mere mortals great, easy recipes my whole family can enjoy. The best thing about this book is that the recipes aren't made from weird food you have to hunt for; they are made from items already in your kitchen. And they are recipes anyone can eat for good health. So, if one member of your family has diabetes, the whole family can eat this food and love it.

The recipes are great, especially the desserts. And you thought you couldn't eat dessert with diabetes! The Carbohydrate Choices is a great counting device. I've never seen it in any other cookbook and I find it much easier to use than exchanges. Plus, it's not just a cookbook. There's doctor's advice and management plans inside. This book is very uplifting and practical.

GET THIS BOOK! IT'S THE BEST DIABETES COOKBOOK, hands down.

5-0 out of 5 stars Betty Crocker's Diabetes Cookbook
Excellent book - Recipes that will take the boring out of healthy cooking and teach the reader how to eat healthy, limit fats, and sugars, etc.
Purchased out of need because my husband's triglyceride count and other medical tests show him to be pre-diabetic. For a beginner in counting carbohydrates, learning about all types of diabetes and meal planning for a healthier lifestyle, this book fits the need! Easy to read, hints and comments from other diabetic patients & medical advice from contributing M.D.s.

1-0 out of 5 stars So many refined carbohydrates!
I am completely baffled by this book and the reviews it has received! After only a few pages I was aghast and realized I had thrown my money away.

I am not a medical professional or scientist but all of my own personal research into diabetes and related blood disorders strongly recommend avoiding refined carbohydrates. This book is full of recipes using highly refined carbohydrates: white sugar and white flour.

I also found recipes containing an uncomfortably high percentage of calories from fat. I expected recipes emphasizing whole, low glycemic foods prepared in as close to their natural state as possible - foods that had as much of their beneficial properties (such as nutrients and fiber) intact. I was extremely disappointed by what this book had to offer and am sorry I bought it.

5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT!
This cookbook is an outstanding guide!
As always- Betty got it right!

5-0 out of 5 stars At last, the book we need
I suffer from this often crippling problem, like so many others. There have been other books that promote themselves as diabetes cookbooks, but they either serve up bland recipes or are irresponsible in their ingredients. This book, however, shoulders the dual burden of wise cooking choices with good taste, and offers enough variety to satisfy. For many of us, this book is literally a life saver. ... Read more

    Book Description

Jenifer Estess is a woman on the verge: She's about to launch her own company; she's looking buff and dating vigorously; she's driving in the fast lane -- with the top down. At the age of thirty-five, Jenifer dreams of falling in love and starting a family. Then she notices muscle twitches in her legs. Walking down a city block feels exhausting. At first, doctors write off Jenifer's symptoms to stress, but she is quickly diagnosed with ALS, a fatal brain disease that is absolutely untreatable.

Max out your credit cards and see Paris, suggests one doctor. Instead of preparing to die, Jenifer gets busy. She dreams deeper, works harder, and loves endlessly. For Jenifer, being fatally ill is not about letting go. It's about holding on and reaching -- for family, friends, goals.

Jenifer's girlhood pact with her sisters Valerie and Meredith -- nothing will ever break us apart -- guides them as Jenifer faces down one of the most devastating illnesses known to humankind. That same enduring pact inspires the creation of Project A.L.S., a movement started by the sisters that changes the way science and medicine approach research for ALS and the related diseases Parkinson's and Alzheimer's, and which has already raised more than $18 million. Will Project A.L.S. help scientists discover medicine in time for her?

Jenifer answers these questions and others in this beautifully written and wholly inspiring memoir that celebrates a life fuelled by memory. Tales from the Bed forces us to reconsider society's notion of "having it all," and illustrates, more than anything, the importance of endurance, hope, and, most of all, love. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I've found a new hero (or heroes)
I have seen the HBO documentary, "Three Sisters," with which this book is associated, and also read this book. Both were amazing and powerful, yet different. I walked away from the book, looking to do something more meaningful with my life, whereas the film was more educational as far as ALS is concerned.

The book kept me up, reading all night long, in a rush to continue with Jenifer on her journey to the end. When I read the final pages, I didn't want to close the book, in fear that the connection I established with Jenifer, Valerie and Meredith would disappear. The writing flowed like a familiar memory and the humor made me smile between the tears that dropped. I feel like I've known the Estess family for my entire life, even though I was introduced to them by mere text in the pages of the book. I recommend this book highly to everyone--not just those who have ALS or know someone with ALS. After all, like Jenifer, ALS could happen to anyone of us.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful
This was such a great read that revealed a woman with a lot of class who even though she was dying inch by inch continued to live and fight for the hope of a cure for ALS. Through the writing you can feel her struggle, but her sense of humor comes through so just when you are about to cry over the inhumanity of the disease you crack a smile or even laugh out loud at something Jenifer said. The love she and her sisters had for one another and their determination to help Jenifer is awe inspiring. This book makes you forget about your troubles and makes you want to do something to find a cure for ALS. I'd recommend it for anyone who has a heart.

5-0 out of 5 stars A moving story of courage
I picked up this book on the way home from a trip for some airplane reading and could not put it down. I was somewhat familiar with Jenifer's story from seeing her and her sisters on the Today Show and other news programs when they started Project ALS. But her courageous story of life and love and what it means to be family really touched my heart - and gave me some much needed perspective in my life. I highly recommend it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Indomitable spirit an encouragement to all
I deeply admire Jenifer's courage and indomitable spirit. Her sisters' commitment to love, care, and find a cure is also very admirable.

My husband has ALS and I am very glad I read this book. I am challenged to love others more and do my best to make a positive difference in spite of daunting odds.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful summer read - inspiring and filled with love!
I just read Jenifer's wonderful memoir, TALES FROM THE BED and thought it was one of the most beautiful stories I've read in years. With all that was changing in Jenifer's life, she had her sisters and still had hope, and remained funny, heartwarming, and inspiring you can feel the love that she had for life pouring through the pages. I hope that you'll give yourself the gift of reading Jenifer's wonderful story and the legacy she left behind. ... Read more

    Book Description

Published in mid 2002, this 2nd edition presents the very latest information on sentinel node, immunotherapy, bone marrow transplants, reconstruction and more…

Since the publication of the 1st edition of Be a Survivor, the book has gained tremendous recognition as a unique resource, and has become one of the three most often recommended to newly-diagnosed women.

Several features make the book unique. It is by far the most visually appealing book on breast cancer. Hundreds of realistic photos and diagrams of radiation equipment, chemotherapy rooms, reconstructed mastectomies, etc. give the patients better insights.

It is objective — representing the viewpoints of over two dozen leading specialists, rather than that of a single oncologist or surgeon.

It is user friendly — clear explanations, lists of questions to ask, testimonials by survivors — all contribute to reassuring rather than intimidating the patient and her family.

Be a Survivor the book is actually a free-standing proponent of an entire multi-media system, which includes a CD-ROM, several videos, and even a Spanish version of the program.

Over the past years, Be a Survivor has been distributed by entire states — such as Vermont and Rhode Island. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars objective, definitive, easy to use
My wife was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. We did a thorough search of the literature. Be a Survivor was the most objective and informative book we found. Highly recommended for anyone looking for help with this difficult decision.

5-0 out of 5 stars A necessity for the newly diagnosed woman.
This is a wonderful book, packed with information, in a very easy to read format. There are 12 chapters:
Facing Breast Cancer; Breast Cancer Basics; Diagnosis and Staging; Surgery; Reconstruction; Radiation; Chemo; Hormonal Therapy; alternative treatments; Clinical Trials; Life after Cancer; A guide for your partner. Each chapter explains what the chapter is about, e.g. What is chemo? How is it given? How it Works. Side Effects. Common Chemo drugs.
This book is unique in that it has testimonials throughout from women, and their partners. It also has terrific drawings. I purchased a LOT of books when I was diagnosed. This was the book that I went to during my chemo and before surgery, to really find out what was going on. It is difficult to know what questions to ask your oncologist or surgeon, when everything is new. This book helps you prepare and should give you the confidence to make treatment decisions about your life. Highly, highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars If You Only Buy One Book....
A little over 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with stage 3 lobular breast cancer. I was given this book shortly after the diagnosis by a nurse in the hospital where I work. It is the nuts and bolts of breast cancer, from the staging to the procedures with clear drawings, specific detailed information, and personal notations from women who have been where we are. It went everywhere with me-from chemo to radiation and the multiple surgeries I had. With this information, I had to face very few surprises. The drains left in place after the mastectomy are explained in detail. Radiation is presented clearly and realistically. There are photographs and drawing of how the chest looks after a mastectomy. The book takes some of the fear out of cancer treatment and replaces it with knowledge and advice. if you can only afford one book on the subject of breast cancer, this is the one I would recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best and most complete book on breast cancer.
If you can only afford to buy one book on breast cancer than this is the one!

This book is packed full of beautiful graphics and pictures of real breast cancer patients and their stories. A true and sensitive approach of their journey with breast cancer.

The medical details presented in this book reveal breast cancer treatment in an easy to understand and concise manner. The medical information is technically accurate and explicit. No book on breast cancer gives as much information in such a concise and precise presentation.

This book deals with all phases of a "breast cancer diagnosis". Included are chapters that highlight how a person deals with the feelings of a breast cancer diagnosis, how to share the news with loved-ones, friends and co-workers, how to create a supportive network, gathering the information needed to make informed decisions, and how to actively participate in the treatment plan.

There is clear information on breast anatomy, cancer cell growth, biopsy, diagnosis and staging, surgical treatment, reconstruction options, chemotherapy and radiation treatments and of course, hormonal therapy. This book also has actual pictures of post-surgical breasts and the results of reconstruction. There is also a chapter about complementary and alternative treatments to assist the patient in battling cancer. The final chapters focus on life after cancer and a special section for your partner.

I recommend this book as a must to every person I know who is facing the challenges of breast cancer, breast surgery and finally for life after cancer.

Beautifully done. Parents of pre-teens and teenagers will find it helpful in explaining this disease to their children.

This book is a companion to an award winning CD-ROM that gives the patient the opportunity to trek on a virtual tour of breast cancer!
