A practical, motivational and well thought out book with exercise plans that anyone can use, whether you are wanting to get fit and have never exercised regularly, or you simply want to take it to the next level... Stallone's book is a real winner here!
Plus, Sly shares some of his past experiences on how he got in shape for various acting roles.Very interesting read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Surprised? No, I'd say "Shocked!"
I've gotta be honest. I wasn't expecting all that much from the book. I've read tons of fitness articles and books, and the prospect of learning anything new or better from a guy that I've always thought of as just an Italian-American actor with a decent physique wasn't uppermost in my mind. I bought the book, though, because I've been pleasantly surprised and impressed by his other product lines.

The thing that impressed me most from the outset was Sly's utter honesty about all the mistakes he made in the past, and his keen desire to make sure we didn't make the same ones ourselves. He really presents his old experiences and failures in a humorous, entertaining and memorable way--usually in the context of making one of his films.

There are some great exercises, unique ones, that I've never tried before. They are well-illustrated with clear photos and explanations. The diet section is good, and has a particularly Stallone flavor to it. Make no mistake--this isn't a cookbook, or a guide to good eating, but Sly gives enough good and reliable information in it to allow anyone--novice or experienced--to put together a real food program that will help them succeed.

And the last great feature--a section especially for women, by Jennifer and Sly, something that many of the current fitness books lack.Again, it's basic, but well done and clearly written.

Pick it up. It's worth keeping.

Truly Inspirational

I grew up watching this man change his body for each type of role he was going to play in one of his movies and it was always amazing the transformation that took place.
Stallone is truly discipline person to achieve such level of change throughout his entire body without resulting to chemical enhancement drugs that many others have use over the years.
No suction work needed here folks, his story is one of triumph over the odds that were presented before this actor and the physical changes further changed how you look at him on the screen and this book tells you all about it.
For the exercises they are basic, very old school basic, hard work went into building his body, nothing fancy here of course you will need to go to the gym to do many of his workouts in this book. The female model while fit truly did not build that body in the gym and again very basic exercise presented and easy to follow.
The cons of this book are just a few being a big fan and all. But there is more to abs work then just crunches and hanging leg raises! Of course there lies the secret many people go to the gym and never achieve such great results as Stallon has. (Wonder if genetics has anything to do with it?)
The twisting setup with a bar across the back (ouch for anyone with back issues) on an incline sit-up board is wicked to say the least; you must be in shape to try this one.
And finally were are the stretches? Functional exercises like the Swiss ball or medicine ball moves? I think I saw more cross training in RockyII, which any fan can watch over and over again for inspiration.
Over all very good book to read for the enjoyment of reliving his body changes but no hidden secrets revealed. H

I remember hearing somebody once say that relying on a celebrity for fitness advice is like taking your car to a celebrity with a well-maintained car for repairs.
There's probably some truth in that statement, but that doesn't mean that Stallone's fitness advice is worthless. The man has spent the better part of his life working out an attaining a level of fitness that most of us will never know. He obviously knows something about training and eating.
The workouts are good, basic ones, but unless you have a very well-equiped home gym, you'll need a health club membership for the workouts. I found it a little odd in the "classic" workout that he recommends working biceps before the back and I would have liked to have heard the reasoning behind that since it's not what most people would recommend. There were some questions that he left unanswered, such as rest between sets, but the workouts are safe and can be adapted to almost any fitness level. There's nothing about anything he recommends that could get you hurt (assuming you have no previous injuries). The workouts also take a reasonable amount of time, typically one hour or less.
The nutrition advice is good, giving people a blueprint for a solid lifetime eating plan that doesn't force you to count calories or exclude entire food groups.
The best part of the book, however, is Sly's own story of how he went from a down-and-outer to an American icon and the role a fitness lifestyle played in achieving his success. Even if you decide there are better workouts or nutrition plans out there for you, his story is still an interesting one.
I wouldn't say I was a huge fan of Stallone. I could take or leave most of his movies, but I developed a greater respect and admiration for what he has done after reading the book.

This is such a well-done book, I can't begin to express how simple, entertaining and thoughtful it is. Stallone gives a lot of insight on his life, his movie career and fitness in general, clearly explaining why diets don't work and basically taking the reader by the hand and setting them up, step by step with a great fitness and nutrition system.This really cuts through the BS.I was very surprised, I honestly didn't expect book to be this good, but just like Rocky, Stallone has scored a knockout here! ... My girlfriend read this book and it has really transformed her. I always liked older women, and she was very beautiful to start with, but after using this book's techniques she has become much younger looking and feels more healthy and alive to boot. The effects were as much as those that I gained after watching the "New Sex Now" dvd transformed our lovemaking. Go for these both!

I was going to purchase this book until I began looking at the reviews!
Time and time again, I have strayed away from Bill Phillips Body-for-life approach looking for a different way to lose weight.Whatever new research had been done or "the fastest way to burn fat", or the so called latest and greatest in supplements, I always failed miserably at any attempt to change my body and mind.
As I popped around on Bill's site, I saw this book.I thought, WOW!!I gotta have this.Anything to make my attempts at a new body that much easier!So I came here and read the reviews.I have to say THANK YOU to all of you who took the time to put your honest view about this book out there!
I noticed that all of you who were familiar to the original Body For Life way of life....Well, just plain hated this one.The LAST thing I needed was another book to make things more complicated than they need to be.I have struggled for a while with my unintentionally, having to make things harder than necessary.My husband always told me to go "back to the basics."Stop the calorie counting, don't worry about the GI of carbs, and not to believe that all supplements work!So needless to say, I didn't need the extra confusion that this book may have caused me.
So, we have hormonal issues???OK...so did all of the other successful women who transformed their bodies and minds and won Bill's Challenges.KUDO'S to all who helped me see that I didn't need this book!

I recently picked up the book, "Fighting Fat after 40", by Dr. Peeke, and was mesmerized the whole way through it.All the while I was nodding to myself, thinking "that's me, that's me".Everything I read just made so much sense, and explained a lot of things that were confusing me.

When I had finished the book, I was pleased to find out that Dr. Peeke had just released "Body for Life for Women", so I bought that the very next day.Again, I was struck by how much sense everything made to me - being 49 and 30 pounds overweight.

I began the program immediately - three weeks ago.I've lost 8 pounds in that time.I love the way Dr. Peeke gives her readers credit for the intelligence to put together appropriate meals and snacks based on her guidelines. This makes her program very flexible and doesn't pin us down to rigid meal plans.

Dr. Peeke's exercise program is tough, but good.I do the strength training 3 evenings a week, and the cardio (walking & biking) the other three.

In my opinion, the results speak for themselves.I feel great, I'm looking better every day, and I'm never hungry.Best of all, I really think that for the first time I've found a program that I can stick to for life.

Thanks Dr. Peeke.Your book came to me at a time in my life when I was at an all-time low.Thanks for making so much sense.

I just want to share my happiness and joy with finding Dr. Peeke's book Body for Life for Women.As a 40 yr old woman, I've had the same problems everyone else has had with trying tokeep in shape despite my 24/7 life.But, I have always had problems with PMS and tend toward anxiety and stress eating.Also, I'm noticing the onset of that Menopot Dr. Peeke talks about in the book and I knew I needed help from someone who could help me as a woman fighting these issues.I bought Body for Life for Women when it came out a month ago right after I saw her launch it on the Today Show.I trust her as an expert in women's health and fitness.And, now I have bought a copy for each of my closest friends.She totally gets it.The program is so simple to follow and she's patient with people like me who were never athletes, have about 40 pounds to shed and don't aspire to look great in a bikini.That's not what this is about to me.It's about being the best I can be, mentally and physically.I love the fact that she is patient and doesn't do a "guy's program" of going hard in a gym where I don't feel comfortable.I'm following her exercise program with a friend who I work out with at my home and it's making all the difference in the world.In 4 weeks I have removed 9 founds of body fat, and dropped a whole dress size.I'm continuing on for my first 12 weeks, and will keep it up until I reach that body composition Dr. Peeke recommends for my health and wellness.I'm telling you if I can do it, so can all of you.Start her program today and you'll thank me for writing this review.Good Luck to you!

This book is different from all the workout/eating/self-help books you will ever read.Dr. Peeke is funny and witty but more importantly compassionate and caring in the way she writes.She truly understands the real challenges women face today.She focusses on a woman's body (hormonal changes and all) and our constant struggle to put ourselves on the never-ending "To Do" list.

I have been active my entire life and at 29 years old I found out I was in premature menopause.I turned to Dr. Peeke's book for help with my aging female body.She discusses the mind, mouth and muscle elements of taking care of yourself.She includes helpful guides like a list of nutrition bars and how they stack up against each other.She is realistic, funny and informative.You owe it to yourself to buy this book.

When I bought this book, I was expecting the Body for Life program with some added information for women and more photos of transformations to inspire me. The transformations in the book appear to be women who actually did the original "Body for Life" program -- not this one. The diet plan lacked the simplicity of the original Body for Life plan. The book overall was also less inspiring than the original. If you're looking for a diet program that really works (I've lost 25 lbs and am still losing) I would recommend sticking with the original Body for Life book written by Bill Phillips. As Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nurse-Midwifery (JNM), the official publication of the American College of Nurse-Midwives, I would like to share my own unequivocal 5-star rating of this textbook for midwives as well as some excerpted comments taken from the excellent review it received in the March/April 1997 issue of JNM. Here's what Judith Carveth Trexler, CNM, PhD, the reviewer, had to say: "Midwives have long awaited the third edition of this classic reference. Its expansion in size and scope make it the definitive text for midwives and one that clearly serves as a primary reference for the profession .... I have always found Varney to be useful and easy to read, especially in comparison to Speroff or Gabbe. I think that this book was never intended to be the definitive text on home birth. If a midwife's interest lies in homebirth, seek out books that cater to that option. I found the skills sections especially helpful. It isn't Varney's job to unite midwives, her primary job is to educate. You can not teach the spirit of midwife through a book, that's where mentoring comes into play. This is certainly a must have for all practicing midwives, regardless of educational background.

I am impressed by Varney's vast knowledge of hospital procedures as they relate to midwifery care. However, I found this to be "textbook" as a very boring read. Her information did not really cover the practice outside the hospital setting as thoroughly as would be needed for someone praticing in that setting. Her information would be most appreciated by the CNM and the L&D nurse - a great resource for them.

This book is a good reference book, but not the best one for homebirth midwives. Myle's, and Anne' Frye's books I have found to be more applicable in my practice. To the above person that thinks that Circumsision should not be addresses, I could not disagree more. Circumsision is a subject that should be addressed prenatally, and Since midwives are supposed to provide basic Post-partum care to the mother and baby during the first six weeks It is essentual that midwives and parents are educated about the issue antapartum ... Thank you, Dr.Clark! This book should be the bible of every single medical professional and it should be required reading for every single med student. The medical community looks really barbaric when you see the results from the simple handling methods Dr. Clark outlines. For me, I've been plauged with a very serious chemical sensitivity for years; carpet odors, clothes detergents, soaps, paint smell, etc. I've also been experiencing a number of food allergies that made my sentivity worse when I'd eat those foods. A buddy of mine suggested that I do Dr. Clark's "liver flush". What came out of my liver was...well, unbelievable. Dozens of major sized green stones, hundreds and hundreds of small pea sized stones and lots of yellow mush. In the days that followed, the things that bothered me suddenly didn't bother me anymore. I've even been able to eat many of the foods again that heightened my sensitivities like potatoes and dairy. THANK YOU, Dr. Clark!! Problem handled!!

I am a teacher from Indiana and have been "into" self-help for some 22 years, ie: homeopathic medicines, bio-feedback, better nutrition, etc. My father died of Lou Grehrig's Disease (ALS) and my seemingly "very healthy" sister died of cancer at 41, so this prompted me to look constantly for better information and up-to-date self-help ideas. Then 2 1/2 years ago a friend told me about Dr. Clark's ideas and about this book. It has dramatically changed my beliefs and my practices about staying healthy! I immediately built a "zapper" and yes, it sounded too "hokey" to be true. My first true test came the day I came home from school "coming down" with strep throat that was going around at school. My son had a varsity basketball game that night that I couldn't miss, so I "zapped" all the way to the game, 45 miles away. As I went into the gym I realized my symptoms were gone and I honestly felt good! I have not progressed into a cold, flu, or illness for 2 1/2 years since using the zapper. My husband has even become a believer (and he is the ultimate SKEPTIC!) I have also followed Clark's suggestions for removing the amalgam fillings from my teeth (both my father and my sister were completely "filled up" with silver amalgams and I was too!) It's taken me 2 years, and THANK GOD the dentist that Dr. Clark recommends, Dr. Jerome, lives in Columbus, IN, just 35 miles away! I can tell my health constantly improves as the fillings go! Also, Dr. Clark's explanations about parasites make very good sense. I've been keeping a log of the people in our community who have chronic illnesses or have died of cancer, and in practically every single case these people have pets INSIDE the home. It makes me want to share this incredible book with all of these unsuspecting families! Please buy this book to share with your family - it can save your life and theirs!

I zapped and rifed and detoxed and it helped some I guess. But, is there a better way? Can stinking thinking get us sick in the first place? For healing of the soul first, check out "Deadly emotions" by Dr. Don Colbert and "A More Excellent Way" by Henry Wright. These books talk about biblical pronciples -- but don't let that scare you off. They work no matter hwat you believe.

With all the positive reviews for this labarynth of lies I assume Hulda Clark's publicist, Tim Bolen has been sending in multiple reviews. It can't be real cancer patients sending in reviews, they all die of cancer.

If Hulda Clark is correct, then why not cure people of cancer in the US? Why not allow the system to be clinically trialled? If it's financial reward she seeks, proving her system works will lead to a nobel prize which has a $1,000,000. In fact she would likely win multiple nobel prizes.

This book can be reviewed with one simple word.

This is the best book on all subjects listed that I have ever found. Not only does it address what is going on in our food chain that needs to be looked at, but it also addresses how to eat in a way that totally works. I lost 55 pounds that were a real problem for me by finding out my metabolic type. Not only did the weight come off but health problems are now non-existant.

The exercise programs and stretches in the book are easy to follow and as a massage therapist a great book for clients and chiropractors, in fact any one interested in helping themselves or their health conscious clients.

Congradulations Paul for the excellent book.

This book is an absolute must to have for everyone serious about making a complete lifestyle change towards better health. The information and references provided about nutrition, metabolic typing diets, circadian rhythms and hormonal responses, parasitic stress on digestion, and parasympathetic-sympathetic balancing of the autonoimic nervous system is outstanding. The only thing that held me back from giving this book five stars is the exercise selection. I understand for the beginner less is better, but I feel advanced level people will not use the recommended performance training routines exclusively due to the over emphasis of light resistance, single leg support based movements, and minimal exercise variety.

This book is astounding.Told as a thriller, it shows why, unbelievably, your pharmacist cannot tell you where your prescription drugs have come from - they have no idea.

"They call themselves the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, and they hold meetings at Hooters. Their uniforms consist of black polo shirts emblazoned with a pack of horses flanking the Grim Reaper, who's wielding a scythe. One Horseman's name is Venema, which rhymes with "enema." But he prefers his code name: Ice Station Zebra. These dubious characters are the good guys in "Dangerous Doses: How Counterfeiters Are Contaminating America's Drug Supply," by Katherine Eban, an expose that wades into more rank Florida unseemliness than a Carl Hiaasen novel, and easily boasts three times the number of sleazebag villains...
Eban mostly lets this stranger-than-fiction cast of characters tell the story, which makes it engaging, even though it's essentially about government failure. This is a book about an terribly important story--how our most expensive and important medicines are being counterfeited and debased and then sold by good pharmacies to unsuspecting citizens. But it is also a wonderfully exciting read, the kind of narrative nonfiction that doesn't come along very often. The author tells of a rag-tag group of investigators who have personality to spare, and an amazing young DA who decided to go after the counterfeiters in southern Florida. It's an exciting chase story, with lots of personality and humor.
Even though the theme is scary, the story is riveting.

Most of my weight problem is in my stomach. Thanks to genetics. I have high blood pressure, diabetes and hypothyroid. My doctor told me I needed to lose weight especially in my stomach. I followed the exercises and the plan. I lost 10lbs all in my stomach and went down a size. No longer it is a problem to button the pants, shorts or skirts. I have 20lbs to go but the more I continue to do it the more I see results. Also, I have done the orginal exercises and the real shapes/real sizes and noticed a toned defination in my arms, legs and butt. This really works..I'm living proof. I would never promote something that doesn't work.

I have been following the routine and meal plans in "8 Minutes in the Morning to a Flat Belly" for a little over two weeks now (almost a record in my exercizing history!). So far it has been very easy to follow. I like that it doesn't require the purchase of "gym clothes," membership fees, and driving to the gym. This is done at home, on my own schedule.

Also, the meal plans are rather tasty and don't leave you feeling hungry. Usually when I am on a "diet" all I can think about is when the next meal will be. This is not the case here.

I hope to keep following this plan and see the inches disappear!

When I picked up Dr. Hotze's book, I had such a sense of relief.This book validates my suspicions and explains why I feel the way that I do.More importantly, it explains how I can fix it!For anyone suspecting hormonal issues, this is a fast and important read.

I too am on bio-identical hormone replacement and had to travel many hours to find a qualified doctor. I found Dr. Hotze's book very informative and was not too surprised to see the one sidedness of the teaching facilities, insurance companies and pharmaceutical companies! Bravo for bringing this out and detaching yourself from it!

I also feel that his move to Allergist is a bit latteral. He's still prescribing "anti" medicines. He does not cover APICH Syndrome nor other reasons for candiasis - such as heavy metals and toxins due to dentistry. These are huge adrenal stressors! I went to one of these "famous" allergy clinics and they laughed at me (that condescending behavior)when I told them I was pursuing biological dentistry to remove my mercury amalgam fillings. My Allergist told me I was wasting my money. My chelation therapy urine tests PROVED I was very toxic with mercury, tin, lead, and other toxins. I went to the cause of my chronic (systemic) candida, allergies, arthritis and CFS!

I am a male 55 years old. I considered myself to be in my prime time of my life, having over 40 years of experience in multitudes of professions. I found myself lacking in energy, beginning to forget things, having difficulty concentrating and of-course what males think of every 15 minutes, I lacked. When my allergies where in prime I had to cutting up a bed sheet, so I would always have something to blow my nose in.
Since starting the allergy and male hormone program of Dr. Hotze I have lost 15 pounds. I am back to my weight that I was in college. My allergies are down by at least 90 percent. I am competing with a job market with 20 and 30 year olds very effortlessly. I paid dearly to buy my truck and keep it maintained. This isn't a book, it is a "good deed" (no, make that GREAT deed). And even that isn't high enough praise. Page by page, we have found answers to dozens of questions that we have been asking, but previously finding no answers. We went to therapists, psychiatrists & psychologists, but until Barbara & Patricia came along with this book, our family was sinking fast.
We are buying additional copies to give to family members and for the staff where our kid goes to school.

From the time that my son was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome, at the age of 3 ½, our family knew that the idyllic life we had anticipated, would never be. At that time, in 1998, there wasn't a lot written about Asperser's Syndrome. Fortunately, I was just becoming a little more knowledgeable about the internet and quickly found my way to OASIS, the Online Asperger Syndrome Information and Support network.

Barb Kirby was there from my first day to help smooth the pathways for other families as no one was really there to help smooth her way. She soon found Patty Romanowski Bashe and together they have created the complete guide to help families through the maze of diagnoses, acronyms, treatments, diets, and educational interventions applicable to those with Asperger's Syndrome, with the publishing of the OASIS Guide to Asperger Syndrome.

Because of Barb's reputation, as soon as I saw this book, I knew that it would be thorough. What I didn't realize is how easy it would be to pick the book up and turn to any page and find information that would prove to be helpful to parents and other family members dealing with the overwhelming issues related to having a child on the autism spectrum.

It is difficult to point to which section of the book is most helpful, because at different times, the various chapters have guided me to my child. At various times, I thought "Why me....why did this happen to ME?"But as this book states, "... the person who is working the hardest in all of this is ....your child".Easy to forget with my parental self-pitying. After I read that, I began to stop feeling sorry for myself and instead began thinking of myself as a "team member". From then, we could begin to regain some of our hopefulness and took on the challenge as a family team goal.

This new edition has been brought up-to-date to include some of the newer ideas, research and treatments related to Asperger's Syndrome. They include various treatments, medications and discussions ofa range of products available to families like ours that are desperately seeking the magic bullet for our child (there are none unfortunately).

However what Barb and Patty have given us with this, is what I consider, the COMPLETE manual for all things related to Asperger's Syndrome; it is the bright ray of optimism that although there are certainly many difficult times ahead, there is also a lot of hope. There are many of us parents and professionals that Barb has brought together under the OASIS umbrella and are working arm in arm to find out more and share those successes with others.

The folks at Betty Crocker have done it again: given us mere mortals great, easy recipes my whole family can enjoy. The best thing about this book is that the recipes aren't made from weird food you have to hunt for; they are made from items already in your kitchen. And they are recipes anyone can eat for good health. So, if one member of your family has diabetes, the whole family can eat this food and love it.

The recipes are great, especially the desserts. And you thought you couldn't eat dessert with diabetes! The Carbohydrate Choices is a great counting device. I've never seen it in any other cookbook and I find it much easier to use than exchanges. Plus, it's not just a cookbook. There's doctor's advice and management plans inside. This book is very uplifting and practical.

GET THIS BOOK! IT'S THE BEST DIABETES COOKBOOK, hands down.

I am completely baffled by this book and the reviews it has received! After only a few pages I was aghast and realized I had thrown my money away.

I am not a medical professional or scientist but all of my own personal research into diabetes and related blood disorders strongly recommend avoiding refined carbohydrates. This book is full of recipes using highly refined carbohydrates: white sugar and white flour.

I also found recipes containing an uncomfortably high percentage of calories from fat. I expected recipes emphasizing whole, low glycemic foods prepared in as close to their natural state as possible - foods that had as much of their beneficial properties (such as nutrients and fiber) intact. I was extremely disappointed by what this book had to offer and am sorry I bought it.

This book is essential if you want to deepen your yoga practice, for how can you really fully understand and better your practice if you don't have a clear understanding of the mechanics of your own body? My suggestion to get the most of the book is to first read chapter one "Movement and Posture" to get a general foundation of the concepts and terminology that will be used throughout the book. Subsequent chapters provide detailed anatomical information pertinent to types of postures. Chapters, therefore, are in the vein of "Abdominopelvic Exercises", "Standing Postures", "The Shoulderstand", etc. So choose a style of asana that you'd like to focus on, read through the pertinent chapter, and then spend a couple of weeks putting the knowledge to work experientially, deepening your understanding of those areas of your body and the series of associated asanas. Don't expect to learn the vast amount of information in one reading. Expect to frequently refer back to the book as you put the information into practice. In my opinion, you'll get far more value out of the book if you use it as an experiential guidebook, rather than treating it like a textbook.

I am both a psychophysiology researcher and a yoga teacher and this book does a better job explaining both the physiological processes and yogic practices than any other text I've read. I could not recommend this book highly enough for those yoga students and teachers who want to understand what exactly they are doing to their bodies during asanas and especially pranayama.

This book does not wave hands and make vague claims or explanations like so many general-audience health of yoga books. My only complaint is that the author does not share the specific studies and sources he used to write the text (other than the knowledge acquired from his medical experience). Perhaps that is because this work is the first of its kind.

If you are teaching yoga now, you should read this book from start to finish as many times as necessary to assimilate the incredibly udeful information. That's what I'm trying to do now!

This is an excellent book for tachers of yoga, as well as for those teaching other physical disciplines. The author has a clear grasp of anatomy and a readable presentation style. This is a fairly easy to read text that is helpful in preparing for the pharmacy boards. It provides essential coverage of pertinent information needed in the everyday practice of pharmacy.

As a pharmacy intern I found this text not only excellent for board review but also as a continuing source for reference as a pharmacist. It is divided into varioius chapters with relavent and useful case studies. It also raises day-to-day ethical questions in the practice of pharamcy that you may encounter.

I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes last month. My family physician gave me a prescription for oral medication and referred me to a diabetes counselor, who recommended the standard ADA diet. I didn't question this, but went to the grocery store and bought a bulging cartload of low-fat food. However, I was also given a glucometer and began testing my blood 6-8 times a day -- not because I was told to do so, but mostly out of curiosity. I immediately noticed that if I ate bread, cereal, fruit, etc., my blood sugar would rise substantially. It seemed abundantly clear, then, that it was best for me NOT to eat those foods. I modified my diet according to the changes I could plainly see in my own blood sugar, keeping my carb intake under 10 or so grams per meal. As an experiment, I also stopped taking my glucophage, just because it seemed that I was getting better results from dietary changes and exercise than I was from the medication. My average blood sugars continued to decline even without the drugs.

Soon after I started this self-made diet plan, a friend recommended Dr. Bernstein's book. I was amazed to see that his suggestions almost perfectly reflected what I had discovered on my own. The more I read the book, the more convinced I became that his system is the only thing that will work for me. There's also no doubt in my mind that it's the only way to try to undo existing damage and reverse the progressive nature of my disease.

The book is clear, detailed, and well-written. The chapters that describe the physiology of diabetes are especially thorough and well done. It's obvious Dr. Bernstein has a personal, intense interest in both the subject and in his patients. He's not just in it for a buck. I recommend this book to everyone with diabetes as well as to the friends and relatives who love them. It will definitely change your life.

My husband was a somewhat overweight insulin-dependent diabetic for many, many years. Even with twice-daily insulin shots, he often had blood sugar numbers over 200. Then, by pure good fortune, he happened to meet the ghost writer of this book and discussed the biology of diabetes with him in great detail. Since beginning this very rigorous plan almost two years ago, he has completely stopped taking insulin! Recent blood and urine work-ups for a physical exam showed no signs of diabetes at all! His diabetes had gotten so bad that his feet still give him a lot of trouble, but, given time, even that is expected to improve. Bruce hates this diet--but, because he believes he'd be a blind amputee without it--or even a dead man by now--he loves it and follows it to the letter. His doctors are now also converts and have purchased their own copies of this book. Don't listen to the ADA; they say diabetics can eat moderate amounts of carbohydrates, but that is just plain wrong. Dr. Bernstein makes his logic crystal clear, and my husband is proof that he's right!

I'm a 41 year old male and have recently been diagnosed with pre-diabetes (whatever it is called), with diabetes running in the family, so to get up to speed on the subject I ordered a pile of books (12 of them) off Amazon including this one. I've been through them all and this one I found the best in its explanations of the various aspects of the condition, the various treatments, and many other relevant details.

Dr Bernstein was an engineer with type 1 diabetes and became a doctor to be able to help others with his experiences and findings; he conveys intimate and detailed knowledge about the condition and all its aspects, and generally impresses with the information he provides.

The diet is not exactly appetising plus its very time consuming to have to calculate food details all the time I guess (not having tried it and not hoping to have to try it for awhile), however I will always keep this book in my bookcase "just in case" - if I do get diabetes and complications occur, I will grab this book and give it a shot. Because it is more believable than most of the other stuff out there, for the reason that it comes from someone who found out all of this himself, then became living proof of his own theory.

I would buy this book initially for the descriptions of how diabetes works, how the treatments work and what the various dangers are, exercises provided, etc. - it is well worth its cost for this information alone. Secondly, the diet may come in handy in case of complications etc. and if other treatments don't work.

And Dr Bernstein does indeed answer the phone himself as another writer also mentioned - I called just before opening hours and sure enough got to talk to the man himself.

This is a common sense book. I am a type 1 diabetic and I highly recommend this book. I have read many other books on diabetes and keep up with the research that is done. Dr Bernstein is a also a diabetic, the book is about his quest to live a life without complications. Great low carb diet book.

I saw Dr. Bernstein speak in 1998 and it completely changed the way I treat people with diabetes. Since that time, I have seen phenomenally better results. Though it is true the book is highly anecdotal, it is always right on in my experience. Dr. Bernstein is an incredibly humble and honorable person as well, a true critical thinker, who questions without belligerence for the truth about diabetes.
