5-0 out of 5 stars Definately the Best!
I absolutely love this book! If you are looking into buying a book about family herbalism, this is the one to get. I show it to everyone who comes to my house and recommend it to everyone I speak with!!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have!
I bought this book hoping to learn more about using healing herbs. Rosemary Gladstar did an excellent job with this book and I have learned so many things from it. The recipes that are included throughout this book are awesome. If you are interested in herbal remedies and natural beauty, this is the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book, need more though
Ok, I am no writer so will just give my little ol opinion. Book is very nice, tons of great information and wonderful pictures.

However, it is not a book if you want to learn how to plant a garden, keep a garden or plant herbs etc..This books is mainly full of information of what herbs do, not what I wanted, but still a lovely book..

Now I need to find a book that can help me to grow a nice vegie and herb garden without killing everything;o)

5-0 out of 5 stars Good looking book + lots of info.
Rosemary Gladstar's Family Herbal: A Guide to Living Life with Energy, Health, and Vitality, is basically all her small manuals (Home Medicine Chest, Herbs for Beauty, Herbs for Children.. etc..) condensed into one handy volume with added information she doesn't include in her other books. She has been an herbalist for quite some time, and really knows her stuff. She also presents it in an easy to read and understand format while including some information about scientific properties of certain plants. Of course, you can't only have one book on herbalism, you have to cross reference, but this is a good book to add to your collection. It has a lot of good recipes, too.

5-0 out of 5 stars If you only buy one herbal, this should be it
I own many herbal books, but this one stands head and shoulders above all the others. Reading this book is like walking into a house with treasures hidden at every turn. Unlike other herb books I've read, Rosemary explains how using herbs is not just a way of treatment, it is a way of LIFE. She explains how herbs can become a part of your nutrition, medication, beauty routine, garden and home. All her recipes work fabulously well. They have obviously been refined over the years and stood the test of time. Her little life anecdotes which appear scattered throughout the book are delightful, instructive and serve to draw you further into her world. Her resource list at the end of the book is extremely helpful. Thank you, Rosemary, for sharing your world and love of plants with us. I truly hope that this book will be passed down to my kids and their kids and beyond (if it doesn't get too beat up from being in the kitchen all the time!). ... Read more

Comprehensive and easy-to-use, Herbal Healing for Women explains how to create remedies -- including teas, tinctures, salves and ointments--for the common disorders that arise in the different cycles of a woman's life. A complete women's health-care manual, this book discusses:

  • common disorders and the herbs that are effective for treating them
  • how to select and store herbs
  • preparation of hundreds of herbal remedies
  • an alphabetical listing of herbs, including a brief description of the herb, the general medicinal usage, and when necessary, warnings about potential side effects.
It is this emphasis upon safe herbology that impressed me most about this book; for example, Gladstar very carefully distinguishes between the safe external applications of Pennyroyal herb and potentially lethal internal misuse of Pennyroyal oil. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Pleasure!
This book is a pleasure to read and a gem for every woman concerned for her health. As an acupressure practitioner I find Rosemary Gladstar's advice invaluable, and her recipes and herbal suggestions complement nicely my books on Chinese herbs. The teas, tinctures and salves are easy to make, and the explanations are clear and knowledgeable. The Materia Medica at the end of the book is extremely useful. I particularly enjoyed Ms. Goldstar's suggestions for younger women's skin problems, have made - without any problems and with common kitchen appliances - the range of facial prducts described in the book, and am enjoying them immensely. Not only are they better than any commercial brand of skin care (because they only contain the best and purest products) but one has the satisfaction of taking an active role in caring for her own health and beauty. Even if you already own several herbal books, do not miss this one. It will become your favorite!

5-0 out of 5 stars A gift to women of every age
I wish I'd known about this book 10 years ago, when my interest in herbal healing and nutrition took off. I am SO glad I bought it. Ms. Gladstar's personality, compassion and expertise are almost palpable in this book. You almost feel that she is right there beside you, gently guiding you as you move on your healing journey. I found, within the pages of this book, more understanding of my womanhood and its challenges and transitions and pains/discomforts those entailed, than I ever found in any gynecologist's office. It's clear from her books that Ms. Gladstar is not only a healer, but a gifted teacher as well. She is able to transmit the philosophy that using herbs is a way of life and not simply emergency medicine. I noticed that many of the herbs and recipes in the book (and every last one of her recipes is a therapeutic masterpiece!) use herbs that are fairly easy to find. No exotic weeds here! Her years of experience are evident in how well her herbal blends work. I'm thankful that a herbalist of her caliber is generous enough to share so much knowledge that has been refined and proven over the years.

5-0 out of 5 stars A must for all women who use herbal remedies
Rosemary Gladstar is a highly respected herbalist. Here she has provided a very useful book that will be enjoyed by any woman interested in herbal remedies. Unlike similar books, this one is appropriate for the novice and the experienced herbalist. Well written and beautiful, this will be a welcome addition to your bookshelf.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indespensable, and a great bargain!
this is the best [price] you can spend on your health! I own a herb store and have been working with herbs for years but periodically pull this book out and learn something new every time. I've told dozens of people to buy this book, for themselves and others. The recipes are simple and really effective. As both a beginners guide and for an experienced herbalist it just can't be beat. buy it!

2-0 out of 5 stars Warning!
Do not buy this book if you already own Rosemary's Family Herbal! All but three recipes in Herbs for Natural Beauty are contained in the Herbal. Even the copy is the same. I was very disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Good Book
This isn't a very big book, but there is information galore. The recipes are easy, ingredients are easy to find, and the homemade products are wonderful to use. I have bought many books on making comestics, but this small book is right up there with the best. This book is full of knowledge on making natural skin care products. I recommend this small book for anyone who is interested in making cosmestics.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!
The only thing wrong with it is that it was TOO short! This book contains wonderfully easy and beautfully effective herbal concotions that offer you a variety of ways to spoil yourself. (-_-)

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!
I really do. The only thing i didnt like is that with all books I love,it was simply not long enough for my taste! (Hence the 4 *'s instead of 5)The natural beauty recipes are not only easy but work wonderfully. This lady really seems to beleive in what she writes, too. I like that! She comes across as so open ,intelligent, gentle and kind. A very down to earth book by a very down to earth woman,in my opinion. I plan on purchasing more books not only by her but from Storey publishing. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ethical Herbalism
This book goes beyond the typical field guide to herbs in promoting the ethical harvest of wild plants and putting emphysis on the herbalist's connection to the Earth. Although it only covers 52 common herbs, it does so thoroughly and includes nice color plates for identification and typical information such as habitat and range of the herbs, applications & seasons to harvest. However, it also includes plant-animal interdependence and a "tread lighly" section which discusses how to minimize damage to the micro-ecosystem when harvesting each specific plant. Also incuded is a general chapter on ethical harvesting, and a chapter on basic herbal preparation. More field guides and herb books need to follow this ethical approach to help preserve our wild plants for the future. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent skincare recipes
I use her recipe for cleansing grains every day. It's the only thing I've found that cleans my super dry skin without leaving it drier. Also used her directions to henna my hair for the first time. I order her products as well and they are all wonderful.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good information
I appreciate books like this that are relatively inexpensive and good
to have on hand to give the best of the best and the most useful of
the useful. Gladstars book explains those basic herbs that we should
have around the house all of the time... Buy this book to see what you
need to keep stocked in your medicine closet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Herbs to always have on hand.
Rosemary Gladstar truly knows her subject matter. She has perfected the way to individualize health concerns and write detailing the herbal treatments for that area. In this book, however she has given us the most important and the most "universal" (in terms of their diverse uses) herbs that we should always have on hand. I don't think it was an accident that her name is Rosemary. Good work Ms. Gladstar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'd love to meet this author
She seems to have such a sensible, grounded approach. I have two young children and am very glad I bought this book.

Things that impressed me:

1. There's a dosage chart, based on age and weight

2. She's obviously not trying to replace a family physician or holistic health care practitioner. The suggestions given are more along the lines of caring for common childhood illnesses...colds, relieving diarrhea or constipation, mild rashes, etc...things that a parent would often care for at home, unless severe.

3. The author's obvious care for people, experience and intelligence shine through on every page.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book for parents!
This is a great book which overviews the gentler herbs which can be safely used with children. Unlike many herbals, this book gives precise dosage guidelines for children by weight and age, AND, more importantly, precise recipes for salves, poultices, teas, syrups, and other forms in which herbs can safely (and easily) be administered to children, including which herbs can be safely mixed and which cannot.

The recipes are classified by illness/symptom, and there is a short section which discusses a holistic approach to not only treating illness/infection/problems, but also preventing future problems. There is also a brief section which overviews the characteristics of commonly used herbs (for children). I use this book with my children almost every week. Without a doubt, Gladstar is one of the best, and this is a must-have for anyone hoping to use herbal remedies with children. It is a serious book about herbal medicine, but easy enough for the beginner to use. ... Read more

Book Description

Contributors include Mark Blumenthal, Richo Cech, Ryan Drum, Stephen Foster, Cascade Anderson Geller, James Green, Christopher Hobbs, David Hoffmann, Kathie Keville, Brigitte Mars, Susun Weed, David Winston, and many others.

Addressing one of the most urgent issues for environmentalists, America's most respected and well-known herbalists share in-depth information on saving 30 popular at-risk herbs.

* Includes color photos of 30 medicinal plants and explains how to use and grow them.

* Provides mail order resources for hard-to-find seeds.

* Offers consumers suggestions for making eco-friendly purchases and using other herbs with similar actions as alternatives.

* Edited by Rosemary Gladstar, author of the bestselling Herbal Healing for Women

While the renaissance in the U.S. botanical market is positive in many respects, medicinal plant populations are suffering from loss of habitat and overharvesting, and many popular medicinal herbs are now at risk, including echinacea, American ginseng, goldenseal, Hawaiian wild kava, peyote, and wild yam. Planting the Future shows us how land stewardship, habitat protection, and sustainable cultivation are of critical importance to ensure an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for future generations. The authors share their extensive experience with using and growing these popular herbs and include suggestions for creating your own private herbal sanctuary, using herbal analogues--other medicinal herbs that provide the same benefits and exist in plentiful amounts--for at-risk plants, and making your herbal purchases a vote for sustainability.

All author royalties will be used for replanting native medicinal herbs on a 380-acre botanical sanctuary in Ohio. ... Read more
