Fitness is a lifetime commitment, but you can accelerate results and transform your body in 12 weeks, says Bob Greene, best known as Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer. Not for the "move a little" crowd, this program is intense and challenging, whatever your starting level. "It's a bit like boot camp," Greene acknowledges. You'll do vigorous aerobic exercise 15 (beginning level), 30 (intermediates), or 45 (advanced) minutes 6 days a week, and increase 2 minutes each week--and double your usual minutes for one workout a week. You'll also strength train with dumbbells or machines and do functional training (strengthening stabilizing muscles).

The eating plan is not a diet--rather Greene describes 5 eating rules to help you eat fewer and burn more calories: curb emotional eating, eat breakfast, establish an eating cut-off time, drink lots of water, and limit alcohol. You'll get enough calories to sustain your intense exercise routine, but cut out the calories otherwise stored as fat.

Greene, author of Get With the Program and Make the Connection, also analyzes popular diets, and fills the book with motivational stories of his successful clients. Recommended for those who are ready to commit to an intense program to burn fat, increase metabolism, and change habits for the long haul. --Joan Price ... Read more

Lose weight, get in shape, understand your emotions, and feel good about yourself. These are the interrelated goals of Get with the Program by Bob Greene, best known as Oprah's personal trainer and coauthor of Make the Connection.

Using this book is like having a personal coach working with you on emotional and behavioral changes as well as diet and exercise. Greene realizes that if you've had trouble losing weight, you need to understand your attitudes and obstacles before any diet or exercise program will work. So phase one of the program is a self-examination regarding changing your life, including written exercises to help you understand your emotions. Phase two adds aerobic exercise, without changing your diet, to rev up your metabolism. Phase three focuses on the emotional connection to eating habits, including identifying emotional eating triggers and working to overcome them. Phase four adds strength training and dietary changes.

Get with the Program is conveniently spiral-bound, so it's easy to fill in the written exercises and view instructions and photos of the physical exercises. It’s highly recommended for people who have had trouble losing weight and are serious about getting in shape--physically and emotionally. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Motivating
Bob Greene's book should not be labeled a diet book, so much as a book about changing one's lifestyle. Using his four-step process, I was able to rejuvenate my exercise and diet regimen and managed to lose about 20 pounds. Much of this was fat, as the fourth phase of Greene's plan emphasizes muscle building.

This book is probably best suited for beginners. Greene's message addresses losing weight, improving cardiovascular health, understanding why you eat (emotional eating, ala Dr. Phil), and improving self-esteem. Greene also advises people not to eat after 7pm, which I believe may be based on the false premise that a person's metabolism shuts off during sleep. According to Greene's plan, you should change your lifestyle in fours phases: 1) find out where you are at, what got you there, and what you want to achieve; 2) implement an aerobic exercise routine; 3) get to know what emotions are working to cause you to eat in excess of your body's needs; and, 4) build muscle with anerobic exercise.

If you already exercise regularly and are knowledgeable of sound nutrition concepts, you may not need this book. However, if you're like me, you may find Greene's book motivational and thus worth the money and time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Realistic advice on how to get fit
Let's be clear up front: there are no major breakthroughs or miracles in this book. Most every American alive knows what it would take to get fit (exercise) and lose weight (eat less fat and junk). To a certain extent, therefore, "Get with the Program" is just a re-formulation of the hard facts we all know. What Bob Greene has devised is a realistic and relatively painless way of adopting those healthy practices into your life on a long-term basis. There are 4 incremental stages to the program which are simple and designed for each person to follow at their own pace. This means that you don't have to wake up tomorrow morning, starve yourself and run out the door for 2 hours at the gym. Step 1 is simple: start a minimum of aerobic exercise, basic stretches and some abdominal exercises a couple of times a week. Easy enough. Once you've thoroughly incorporated that into your life, you move on to stage 2 where exercise picks up a little. Not until you reach stage 4 do you begin to actively change your eating habits; that can be months or years later. This is a fitness program that isn't intimidating and isn't going to require you to drastically change your whole lifestyle immediately in order to get results and start feeling better about yourself. This means that a lot of people who haven't been successful in weightloss or exercise programs before are finally going to succeed in making long-term changes to their lives. Again, this isn't a radical fad diet (in fact, the nutritional advice is rather skimpy - follow Greene's principals, but don't hesitate to supplement the nutritional info if you need to)- it's about making gradual changes at a pace you can live with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Broader Benefits than Other Diet-Exercise Programs
Excellent book. Practical advice that moves beyond just eating recommendations and exercise recommendations. Covers emotional eating, dealing with needs. Very well rounded and more practical and reasonable than a lot of ther programs. There are nice journal pages also. To improve wellness even more, and to help make good authentic changes--like weight loss, one of the best book I have seen in a long long time is "Effortless Wellbeing: The Missing Ingredients for Authentic Wellness" by Evan Finer. Get with the Program and Effortless Wellbeing combined can really help as a combination. HIGHLY recommended!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!! It's all about habits
The key to permanent weight loss is lifestyle change
and that is exactly what this book is all about. Walk 20 min a day, take the stairs instead of the elevator, jump rope when you walk. Diets alone won't do it...you have to make it a habit to MOVE. You should also check out anthoer great book I just read called "The Power of Positive Habits"...excellent!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive approach to lifestyle change!
This book is truly excellent. Of course we know if we are overweight that eating right and exercising regularly is the cure to our problem. However, few books address the "why?" behind the problem, the underlying mechanisms of WHY we overeat, WHY we are lazy, WHY we make excuses for ourselves. He starts off by saying "this is not a diet book", which is great because the pressure is instantly reduced. The book addresses your mental state of being, your life goals, stress, and emotional overeating, really forcing you to look inside of yourself. From there, he gradually builds in aerobic exercise, and not until the end are you even considerig food choices. You do not worry about being on a "diet", which is very relieving. You're very unlikely to fail at this program, you can only feel better about yourself! Try it, it literally does change your life! ... Read more

"Eat sensibly and exercise," is Bob Greene's message, and in a friendly and personal style, he shows you how. Greene, an exercise physiologist and Oprah Winfrey's trainer, focuses on diet with a wealth of sound information and helpful strategies. Greene starts with a cutting overview of destructive diets, including those popular today. Then, after reviewing exercise essentials, he presents a refreshingly sensible plan for nutritious, healthy eating, with tools for keeping intake moderate. One key is eating breakfast, which boosts metabolism and helps you eat less all day. Another is distributing your calories over the course of the day rather than eating a lot at any one meal.

You won't get bored with Greene's 85 enticing recipes, including Scrambled Egg Whites with Spinach and Orange, Breakfast Fried Rice, Gingered Butternut Squash Soup, Fish Chowder, Portabella Mushroom Burgers, Pan-Seared Fillet of Tilapia with Mango TomatoSalsa and Lentil Pancake, and Chocolate Almond Angel Food Cake. Greene's other books in the Make the Connection (with Winfrey) and Get with the Program series helped millions start a fitness program. This one will help people concerned with weight loss and health take their next steps towards a nutritious, moderate-calorie, lifetime eating plan. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and fun to read!
I have seen Bob Greene on Oprah and he is so down-to-earth. His ideas and guidelines for eating healthfullly are easy to incorporate and just make good sense. The book is an easy, interesting read and his advice is practical and simple to undertake. Now my entire family is eating healthier and is slimming down to boot! I appreciate that Bob doesn't go overboard in expecting us to give up everything that tastes good. He understands that we still need to indulge ourselves once in a while. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking to change their eating habits for good.

5-0 out of 5 stars This works!
This book is in plain english and easy to follow. He makes it so easy to understand and to do. The recipes are not only healthy but very flavorful. I have changed my entire way of looking at food and am slimming down by the week.

4-0 out of 5 stars So Helpful!
This book was an easy read and it was even easier to apply Mr. Greene's philosophies to my routine. Unlike so many of the other books on diet and nutrition, Greene takes into account how difficult it can be to eat healthy and still live in the REAL world.
I have taken his advice and changed my diet and (with exercise)already lost 15 lbs. (in a month)
The only problem I had was with the receipes in the back. Only one or two were even remotely appetizing to me. Give it a try...maybe you're into those foods.

Help yourself lose weight the natural way. It's wonderful! This book and a book called Dreams: Gateway to the True Self are magnificant! Look for both on Amazon.com.

3-0 out of 5 stars Gives the same weight loss tips as seen on "Oprah"
Although I enjoy hearing and reading Bob Greene's books, there was nothing new in this one. Most of the pertinent information has already been heard on "Oprah" or in his previous material.
Though the recipes sounded delightful, they were not practical or convenient. Several ingredients would require many stops at specialty stores. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm making the connection!
For years I've struggled with my weight but now I feel I've found the answer! Oprah and Bob Greene's book is THE BEST! It's still a struggle day by day but now I know the best way to go about things and how to approach it, rather than being on diet after diet, year after year! My son has special needs and has been ill all over Christmas. I find I comfort eat when there are difficulties but writing it all down in my journal does really help! I too hate the water still and have to "force" it down, but force it down I do and I hope to reap the benefits soon. I've only just started my connection but I can "feel" this is the answer and can't wait for the coming months and for my lovely slim strong body to be set free from under all this gross clinging fat! Here's to Oprah and Bob - a million thanks!

5-0 out of 5 stars An Inspiration: The Answer for the Chronically Overweight
This is BY FAR the best book I have ever read for those with lifelong weight problems. Bob Greene is so compassionate and knowledgeable that I completely trusted what he had to say. Oprah's vulnerability and achievements are amazing (and yes, she still runs--she just ran an 8k in Chicago). Don't skip the beginning part of the book that sets the stage for making the decision to become fit. This part talks about how the real issue is self-care and self-love, not weight loss. It all made sense to me and prepared me to take on the steps. I'm happy to say that I have been applying the steps for two months, have lost 18 pounds and am running almost 3 miles a day! I feel like a million bucks mentally, emotionally and physically. If you are overweight and ready to become fit, this is the book to read and re-read! Thank you, Bob and Oprah!

1-0 out of 5 stars common sense
I've read this book and it works if you use it but its nothing new. If you want to save yourself some time from buying it drink water eat a well balanced meal, and exercise. Everything Oprah touches turns to gold. If only I could get 14.95 for my advice!

5-0 out of 5 stars Grimly Ironic.
After going through so many visibly successful "slimming phases," Winfrey has arguably shed more pounds in the aggregate than the ill-fated Donner Party, and her directives should not be taken lightly. I myself followed this wonderful book's program for several weeks before my second wedding, and was able to wow my betrothed with a slender new physique in time for our romantic yet financially disastrous trip to Petit St. Vicent. Sadly just like its esteemed author, I fell into a subsequent bout of severe gluttony that rapidly erased my hard-won gains. However I took heart in Ms. Winfrey's own phoenix-like dieting program, convinced that one day success would again be mine. I found the quiet example of Winfrey's co-author, a Mr. Bob Greene, to be no less inspiring. Greene is an object lesson in tenacity and dedication as he daily addresses the Sisyphean task of being Ms. Winfrey's personal trainer.

Ms. Winfrey is famous for experiencing somatic changes as regular and dramatic of those of the fabled Incredible Hulk. For this reason one is tempted to dismiss any advice that she might proffer on the topics of diet, nutrition, or general bodily health. 3-0 out of 5 stars Great concept, great franchise
Bob, I love your programs and your energy. I think just about everything you do is awesome! This book however isn't much more than a lab journal. It has us write down food/exercise like we are a science experiement. It is a lot like a lined paper notebook.

I got a lot more out of LifeChanger. Your exercise program, coupled with this self discovery tool enabled me to lose 185 pounds! I recommend every buys ALL of Bob Greene's other books, but pass on this one and get yourself LifeChanger instead! I found mine on eDiets.com's store.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bob Greene is the BEST!
From Make the Connection to Get with the Program to Get with the Program's Guide to Healthy Eating to this Daily Journal, Bob Greene is down to earth, easy to understand, and is highly motivating and encouraging. I would recommend his books to anyone desiring to take better control of their health and fitness, and do it with a common sense approach. I see why Oprah likes him so much.

5-0 out of 5 stars Essential Companion
If one is to spend money and time on reading the book, then they should use the daily journal to put "words into action." Set up into twelve week increments, this is enough time to record your progress and also see the results. With this notebook one can organize and record their fitness goals, exercise, and eating patterns. You can keep track of fat, sugar, carbo and alcohol intake. You can tell if your staying on track with your goals, progressing or slipping. Use it or lose it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Place to Track your progress
I like the format of this journal. You can track exercise, food intake, alcohol, fat and sugar along with writing your thoughts and specific food if you so desire. The only thing that I do not like is his use of the term "Bad Carbohydrates." I hate the whole good food vs. bad food terminology and think that it promotes some unhealthy food issues.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful Tool for the Discipline of Fitness
As a device for accountability, users will find "The Get with the Program! Daily Journal" valuable. Twelve weeks might not seem long in calendar time; it is less than four months. However, when trying to apply fitness principles, accountability is the key. Any discipline benefits from tracking progress.

While a simple notebook might suffice, and would save you a few bucks, this journal might help you realize you are serious.

I fully recommend "The Get with the Program! Daily Journal" by Bob Greene. Take this effort seriously, and enjoy the lifestyle that follows when fitness is achieved. You will be glad you did.

Bob Greene is best known as Oprah Winfrey's personal trainer and coauthor of their bestselling Make the Connection, which is about taking your first steps to fitness and weight loss. Now he's back with the next phase: elevating your fitness program, staying motivated, and creating permanent change. "You create yourself through choice," says Greene, and the way to overcome old habits or laziness is to make every choice conscious, whether you're opening the refrigerator door or deciding whether to skip your workout because it's raining. Keep the Connection is, as you'd expect, full of exercises--but many of the exercises are mental. Greene holds that you can't change until you understand yourself, so he offers several mental exercises to help you become more self-aware. After you've had your mental workout, Greene describes the four components of fitness: flexibility (with photos of stretches), cardiovascular power and endurance, abdominal and back fitness (with photos of a variety of crunches), and muscular strength and endurance (illustrated using Cybex machines). Greene also outlines a sensible nutrition plan based on the food pyramid, and gives 18 recipes.

The book is filled with anecdotes about the people Greene has trained. (Judging from the number of his clients, this man must never sleep!) If you're ready to make changes that will improve your body and enhance your life, this book will help you do it. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book!
This book is written by an exercise physiologist who knows what he is doing. It is an extremely effective one and gives you advice on what to eat, when to eat, when to exercise and so on.It even tells you the connection between alcohol and weight loss.

Since I have been on this diet, all the cravings for junk food have gone. I was someone who lived for sugar and now I do not want any of it. I use to crave coffee in the morning as well but realized I didn't want that wired up feeling & acid stomach. I switched over to a caffeine-free coffee substitute made from soyabeans I found on the net at www.
S o y c o f f e e.c om. It so easy for someone to tell you to eat less, but if you are craving bad foods, eventually you will fail. In the first five days I was on this diet all the craving ceased and I was already 8 lbs down. If you were like me and cannot wait for your next slice of cake and at the same time really want to change your lifestyle, Try this.

5-0 out of 5 stars You CAN make the connection!
Thats what this book should have been titled!I disagree. It's not just the same as make the connection.I found Make the connection just plain ole' diet info.Great info, but nothing new. This book's section on motivation was astounding! What an eye opener for someone who has struggled with the mental part of making the decision to finally change my life. This book is definately something to pick up for anyone who has had it with diets. There's so much more to it!Life changing!

5-0 out of 5 stars a perfect completion to "Make the connection"
It is true that the steps towards weight loss are no different than in "Make the connection". But I think this book complements the first one perfectly. For the chapters on motivation alone, this book is worth buying. It explains the motivation issues of certain typres of people and why it can be damaging to your self-esteem to attempt dieting when you are not ready in your mind. This book also helped me to stay motivated whenever I had a low, and to keep going. I haven't regretted for one second that I bought this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I disagree with the bad reviews....
Like the others, I read MTC several times.Yes, if you just want instruction on the 10 steps, you don't need this book. However, if you've tried tofollow them but just can seem to stick to the program, this bookis for you.

His 'exercises' on self-awareness was written for me and wasonly hinted in the first book.It literally changed my life. For once, Ihave been able to stick to the 10 steps for 7 months now, have lost 30pounds and am a much happier person in general.Oprah's story was nice, but I often wish I had Bob around to talk about ME for a change. This bookdoes that.

Like I said, if you just want instruction and already haveMTC, don't bother. But if you can't seem to stick to the program and can'tfigure out why, buy this book! You may learn something about yourself!

1-0 out of 5 stars I have to agree with the other low reviews
Making the Connction was terrific, and when I read Keeping the Connection, it was a few days after re-reading MTC. Literally 1/3 to 1/2 the book was a copy of the first. I was extremely disappointed. It is a fair book on itsown, but do not bother to buy both. And besides, Oprah's story in MTC isreally wonderful. Buy something by Suzanne Schlosberg instead. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great way to keep making the connection
When I first bought the journal in 1996, when the program first came out, I put it on a shelf and let it collect dust for six months than I started Oprah's program. What made me stay on the excerise/eating right program was this journal I had to put everything I ate, felt, did down on paper. Sometimes that is the hardest part. The important thing I found out is that when you put your feelings down on paper, you can detect a pattern to why you are not succeding in losing weight. Because of Oprah's journal, I was able to see what I was doing wrong and correct it. I now years later review my first journal to keep giving me inspiration to continue on the right track. This journal simplify's the process outlined in Oprah's book by making it easy to check off how much water you drank and check off the fruits you ate, it enables you to see how much more you have to consume for the day to stay on the plan, there is also lots of room to discuss how much excerise you did, and how you felt about it. This journal helped me stay on Oprah's plan to lose weight, it is well worth the purchase.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great way to journal
If you are a person that likes to do the journaling thing, this book is for you. Each day is set up with two pages, one that you can write your thoughts. This particular page is great as it gives you an inspirational quote every day. The other page is the one where you get to note how much water you drank, the fruits and veggies you ate. You also get to enter in some info about exercise that you did and more. Some of us can do things better if we put them down on paper. If this is your style, this is a great book for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars A positive journal is excellent "brain food"...
I bought this out of curiosity. Following a journal like this one is something that can help all of us but which we all mostly overlook...positive attitude reinforcers on a daily basis. Though the concept may seem like a lot of wimpy self-help nonsense, your thoughts affect everything in life. When tuned in the right direction they bring the "magic" that logic and analysis never reach. Just ask Oprah...her life is an example...an attitude that would never accept defeat. There is scientific proof that this is true, for all you skeptics: though optimists have a less accurate estimation of "reality" around them, they deal with challenges better and have more success in all realms of life. Hence, eventually your reality changes to match your optimistic and slightly unreal perceptions. A little Polyanna is good food for all of our brains and this helps you exercise your "Polyanna lobe" for more success and happiness. I have even seen my own life turn around using this approach.
