    The 7-Day Low-Carb Rescue and Recovery Plan The word "miracle" isn't in the title, but perhaps it should be. In The 7-Day Low-Carb Rescue and Recovery Plan, The Drs. Heller (The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet) have designed a tremendously simple week-long "jump start" for anyone who wants to give low-carb living a shot--or even a second try. With their emphasis on lean proteins and plenty of fiber, rather than plain "slabs of meat" at every meal, you'll actually be adding food to your daily regimen for the first days of the program. As you continue the week, carb-heavy foods will be moved to the end of meals; partially removed; and removed entirely. A generous handful of recipes are included, all of which include plenty of spices and flavor, from the mushroom garlic dip to the sesame pork with garlic cream sauce. Some, like a flour-free "crepe," can be made ahead in stacks and frozen for later munching.The remainder of the book is helpful even to those who are doing a decent job sticking to your plan during typical days, but have problems when faced with holidays or dinners out with friends. The Hellers detail a few typical experiences we all encounter--waiting for friends at a bar and "rewarding" ourselves with sugar-laden desserts is one--and then demonstrate how to avoid typical pitfalls.     In this book the Heller doctors present an alternative approach to the typical low carb diet. Drs Heller suggest you start slow, and work up to a low carb diet over a 7 day period. Using this approach, the dieter has an easier time of adjusting to a carb free diet, without the sudden shock of going cold turkey.

    However, in my opinion the best part of this book is Part Two, where they discuss tactics, tips, and strategies for succeeding on this diet. I learned in this book that artifical sweetners and MSG were sabotaging my weight loss goals. After suffering for weeks on a low carb diet, I had reached a plateua and my body refused to yield a single more pound. After reading this book I have removed artifical sweetners from my diet, and try to minimize MSG consumption. This is not easy, as MSG is virtually all of our processed foods, including the protein broth ingredient used in canned tuna. Also, the Hellers disclose some of the hidden carbs in food generally accepted as good on this diet. For example, I had been eating a sizable amount of vegetables that I thought were safe, but alas, they were loaded with hidden carbs.

    The main premise of the Heller low-carb diet is to eat in a way that effectively manages your blood sugar levels. The book gives you plenty of ideas on how to do this, including some surprising debunking of popular low carb diet myths.

    I have dozens of diet books - many of them low carb diets. This is by far the best book I have. While Atkins and many of the others starts you off with the hardest part of the diet and eases you in to more carbs, this plan suggests you work into the diet over 7 phases. It is so much easier and so much more effective. I never could last on the Atkins diet, but this diet shows you how to eat a healthy diet and have a little of anything you want. At last - I have found a healthy eating plan that works for me.

    Before this book i was out of control and when I say out of control, I mean it. Even though I'd lost over thirty pounds on the "biggest low-carb diet going", I couldn't stay with it. I gained back fifteen pounds of the thirty I lost and couldn't get a grip on my eating.

    I got this book as soon as it was released and within two days I knew I was going to be okay. It's been only a week but just like they said I'm already back in control. I've started losing weight again and I have carbs everyday without going nuts. I don't cheat and I feel like my old self again.

    I am so glad I didn't give up. This book was my answer. I hope it's yours.

    My letter is short and to the point.
    When I heard about this book I was trying to figure out what to do. I couldn't stick with either of the low-carb diets I tried. I couldn't go a day without going off my diet.
    Each night I'd promise myself i would get it together the next day and every day I'd blow it at least once. I was getting nowhere fast.
    There's something amazing about how easy this book is to follow. I finished the last step and I never cheated. Not once!
    I have no problem staying off carbohydrates because I can eat them in a controlled way everyday. I don't need to go off my diet and I don't want to. That's what's really great.
    I would recommend this book for anybody who just can't get stick to the typical low-carb diet no matter how hard they try.

    If you've been a yo-yo dieter for years or if you can eat a pound of pasta at one sitting, this book may very well be an eye opener. In simple--but never condescending--language, it explains the roots of carbohydrate cravings and teaches you how to normalize your insulin levels to prevent future food binges. Regulated insulin levels in turn help to temper serotonin levels, so food cravings and mood swings are prevented. The authors, both research scientists (one a health psychologist, the other a pathologist), have lost and kept off a total of 200 pounds between them. They've based this book on nearly a decade's worth of research, during which they've helped nearly 80 percent of their patients lose weight and keep it off for at least a year.

    They explain that carbohydrate addicts most commonly crave popcorn, breads, bagels, rice, pasta, potatoes, ice cream, chocolate, pie, cookies, crackers, cake, fruit and fruit juice, potato chips, and pretzels. A questionnaire at the beginning of the book determines if you're indeed a carbohydrate addict, and if so, to what extent. (For those readers whose quiz doesn't indicate addiction, but who are bothered by their food cravings, the authors recommend a doctor's visit for an explanation.) The book includes a diet plan with dozens of easy recipes, a chart of the carbohydrate content of many common foods, and lists of binge triggers to watch for.     I am 25 years, 5'7" and now way 127 pounds, when I began this diet on July 6th I weighed 146 pounds. I have only two pounds left until my goal weight, a weight I haven't weighed since I was 16 years old and modeling, I never imagined I could ever reach this point, it didn't even occur to me until a couple weeks ago that I would make it. The diet is simple I have lost my cravings completely I have so much more energy. In response to "talk to your doctor first please" and anyone else wondering, I was diagnosed hypoglycemic 4 years ago after fainting and severe dizzy spells, I was retested again after begining the diet and am no longer hypoglycemic, and my doctor is fully supportive, so there is hope, I agree it may not be for everyone. but I support it. I followed this diet but I suggest reading the 96' version for hints such as chromium supplements and salad eating, oh and NO diet soda. Regarding alcohol, I drink 5-7 (microbrews-12 carbs each) a week and consistanly lose more weight after a night of drinking than normal days. Beer is one of the only natural sources of chromium and works as a diaretic as well. Upon reaching my goal weight I will attempt to quit smoking I'll write back with those results in a couple months, but I'm confident that I will maintain my weight!

    I promised I would write again to chronicle my progress on this diet (Rachael says "way of life"), and here I am 8 weeks into it and I have lost only 8 pounds. I have not cheated, but I guess those free dinners are what is keeping me from losing as much as I would like. I still feel great, no cravings, sleep better, etc. so I'm not giving up. One of the most helpful suggestions in the book is to keep track of your average weekly weight and I've created a spreadsheet that calculates that for me, together with a graph that illustrates my weight loss. My graph is very encouraging as it shows that I've lost weight every single one of those 8 weeks. I think it's basically a healthy diet, and a 1 lb./week loss is probably healthier than crashing down. Rachael recommends not losing more than 1% of your weight per week -- at that rate I should be losing 1.5 lbs per week. The sluggish digestion I mentioned in my previous review is still a problem if I forget to drink water (6-8 glasses a day makes a real difference in that department). So I'm still on the wagon, with about 12 more lbs. to lose. Will write back in 12 weeks!

    Carbs aren't the enemy, it's just the TYPE of carbs you eat that can shoot your glycemic index way up, causing a huge insulin rush. Once your body becomes used to those high amounts of insulin, the "excess" gets stored just like excess calories do- in the form of fat. Dr.'s Heller help us to understand that there are good carb choices and bad carb choices. For example, most fruits and vegetables are good carbs, while bread, rice, corn, bananas, table and other forms of sugar, sweets, etc are all bad forms of carbs. Carb Addicts is simply about making good choices. The "reward meal" allows you one meal a day where you can eat some bad carbs, provided you eat a small side salad first, and eat equal portions of protein and good carbs along with the bad. You can go back for more "bad" carbs as long as you also take more and equal amounts of protein and good carbs. Eventually, you insulins levels even out, and you lose the cravings for the "bad" carbs. The book gives you the list of foods to eat and foods to avoid, plus a few recipes to help you create low-carb meals. Also included is a test to find out how sensitive you are to carbs.

    After two weeks on this diet plan I could bearly lift my head up. I nearly fell asleep driving home from work nights...not to mention hardly staying awake while at work. I thought it would be a pleasant change from the restrictions of Atkins, but I was never tired on Atkins. I don't know if it had something to do with insulin from the sudden onslaught of carbs...or what the problem was. All I know is I am happily following Atkins and losing much more rapidly than I did on this CAD plan. In two weeks I lost 6 lbs. on CAD...14 on Atkins. You figure it out.

    It's been 4 days on the diet, and I've loss 5.5 pounds already! It's important that you take the carb addict's test, located at the beginning of the book, before starting the diet. Be sure to answer the questions honestly. You may find out that you are not a carb addict. If your not, this diet won't work for you. For those who say that they are starving between meals, you should slightly increase the fat content of your complimentary meals, say with a piece of cheese, small piece of butter, etc. This will give you that full filling that will last you to the next meal. What has allowed me to beat those cravings it knowing that I can eat anything I want for my Reward Meal.

    Those who have not already read The Carbohydrate Addict's Diet or related titles and are not familiar with the program's strategy may at first find the many high-fat recipes included here counterintuitive to the notion of a diet. But the idea is simple: eliminate the foods that trigger overeating--starches, snack foods, and sweets--and replace them with protein-rich, fibrous meals that help to normalize blood-sugar levels and curb the impulse to binge. Such an approach allows for higher fat consumption--the body metabolizes fat more efficiently when there is less insulin in the blood stream--and even has the psychologically beneficial side effect of permitting a certain amount of indulgence. People usually leery of diets because they don't want to give up their weekly cheeseburger will be awed by recipes such as the egg- and cream-augmented Left Bank Burgers. People who have health restrictions on salt and alcohol (a few recipes call for wine) will want to have the original Carbohydrate Addict's Diet book handy in order to look up suitable alternatives--they are not included with this cookbook.     After being on the Hellers Lifespan program now for over 5 months I anxiously awaited a cookbook with easy to follow and easy to cook recipes. Well, boy I found it. The meals are quick and tasty and not boring. These meals are easily incorporated into a balanced carbohydrate meal or just as a craving reducing meal. Since this is not a diet and a way of life for me I wanted variety in my plan and flavor in my plan and I got it. I recommend this book to anyone who wants a balanced carbohydrate plan with no cravings and lots of variety. Such a great job the Drs. Heller did on this book. Bravo.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Good, Easy Cookbook for Those of Us with Insulin Problems
    Anyone who claims this diet is "dangerous" obviously knows nothing about hyperinsulinemia or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS). For women with PCOS, this diet is a godsend, as it a life-saving way for us to finally control the extremely excessive amounts of insulin that are constantly being poured into our systems. Any doctor who treats PCOS, which affects 6-10% of all women, will tell you that this diet, or a few others such as Sugar Busters, will ward off the Type II diabetes that we are almost certain of getting by age 40 if our excess insulin isn't regulated. Thus, low-carb (the more carbs you eat, the more insulin your body creates) is the only way to go. Anyone who doesn't understand all the intricacies of insulin resistance has no right calling this diet dangerous. End of rant!

    This cookbook was easy to follow and had some great ideas. To someone like me, who for health reasons has to adopt this diet as a way of life, rather than simply a quick weight-loss tool, this book is especially valuable. Many of the recipes are so palatable that my husband enjoys them as well, and I entirely avoid that feeling of deprivation that so often accompanies other diets. I found myself looking forward to my low-carb meals more, rather than just as something to get through because I needed to eat. I especially enjoyed the seafood section as I've been wanting to incorporate more seafood into my diet. Once again, the Hellers have extended a lifeline to those of us who need to adopt this way of eating for life.

    A final note: one of the best things about the CAD is that carbs are NOT eliminated from the diet; you simply must follow certain guidelines as far as when they can be eaten. Also, fatty meats are not encouraged; there is much more emphasis on vegetables. My cholesterol has been lowered significantly since I began this diet, not to mention my weight!

    This was the first low-carb cookbook that I bought after choosing to lessen the carbs in my diet. It provides 250 new low-carb recipes, as well as guidelines on how to incorporate Health Agency Recommendations and American Heart Association's Recommendations into the Carbohydrate Addict's Program. After these recommendations, the book delves right into delicious low-carb recipes!

    The recipes are divided in 12 sections:

    Appetizers and Soups A few recipes from this section include Marinated Thai Chicken, Aromatic Shrimp Soup, Herbed Cheese Dip, and Holiday Meatball Appetizer.

    Breakfasts Hearty Breakfast Quiche, Salmon Rolls With Cream Cheese, Savory Spinach Omelet, and Breakfast Pockets are but a few of the easy, mouth-watering recipes in this section.

    Dips, Dressings, And Sauces Delcious recipes include Cucumber Cloud Supreme, Feta Vinaigrette, Creamy Clam and Crab Dip, and Roasted Green Pepper Sauce.

    Ok, well maybe I'm a cookbook snob, but I couldn't fathom some of these "recipes". Baked Brie? I mean come on... who needs a recipe to put a wheel of Brie into the oven?? Or putting sausage in the oven with mustard slathered all over it, or rolling up some chicken and mustard in a lettuce leaf. These are more IDEAS but RECIPES??? I will admit to loving Bon Appetit and Jacques and Julia, so you'll need to relate there to get me. Plus, most of their recipes call for "teriyaki sauce"??? It's like my grandma making hundreds of recipe that call for Mrs. Dash. What do they mean "teriyaki sauce"? If they really mean that , it has sugar or corn syrup in it. If not, is this meaning soy sauce? If so, why is it in EVERYTHING??? I love low carb food, but this cookbook did not help me come to that love. ... Read more

    4-0 out of 5 stars It works. A sustainable weight loss with few cravings.
    I have recently been under a great deal of stress with my wife's illness and trying to cope with it. I am in the military and can't afford to be overweight yet my weight continued to climb even with increased exercise and a sensible diet as recommended by nutritionists. After two unsuccessfulI watched a show concerning this book and the stress factor concerning insulin production hit a nerve. I bought the book and have stuck strickly by the plan. In 24 days I have shed 14 pounds with out the hunger pains. Although they allow deserts with the rewards meal, I have chosen to have fruit. I do want the sweets but am more concerned about weight loss for now. With each pound going away, the exercising becomes easier which sheds more pounds. I have tried other diets but rarely was able to continue them for long, I really missed the sweets. No longer, now I can have them too, just has to be during the rewards meal. Buy it, read it, understand it, and apply it. I don't think I was a true carbohydrate addict but after taking the test they provide, I was in the middle group. Doesn't matter now, their process works and is spelled out in laymans terms. Some of the receipes were not worth my effort to prepare them but we each have our own tastes.

    It has been 12 weeks since I started this diet, and I've lost 14 pounds and the desire to eat between meals. From the research I did, it appears that the diet induces a condition called, "ketosis" which may be harmful over the long term. Finding myself losing weight too quickly and not feeling well after 2-3 weeks, I cautiously added more carbohydrates than the plan calls for. I'm back to shredded wheat for breakfast, with skim milk and fruit. At lunch, I eat protein, one of the vegetables from the non-craving list, and bread or an apple. Each evening, I follow the diet plan for the reward meal which is tasty and lots of fun. After a brief plateau period, my weight started going down again, and I continue to lose steadily without feeling deprived.

    The plan has contributed to my well-being by giving me a way to get free of the carbohydrate addiction I had developed that had me "grazing" all evening, every day. I had lost the desire for meat, and am glad to have it back in my diet. I have needed to help my bowels along with a stool softener, but this is a small price to pay for a way to get my body back in shape. I am thankful to the Hellers for their work and promotion of their plan. Also, to amazon.com for providing this forum which helped me decide to try the Heller plan in the first place.

    Having just turned 50 last year I knew I had to get my weight down. But it was more than that-I was looking for guidance to learn to eat healthy for the rest of my life, and I found it with CAD. I am going into my 3rd week, and I lost 5 pounds each week I weighed myself. Just to be sure the scale was accurate, I went to Walmart and stood on half a dozen different scales to make sure things were correct. It is SO exciting to see such great progress so quickly!
    The doctors also offer several other wonderful books-cookbooks and a Healthy Heart Program guide.
    You can speed up your progress with a simple exercise routine-all I do is walk 1 hour each day. I make sure I have a green salad with most lunches and dinners-the bigger, the better-it will help fill you up so you'll eat less of whatever is left on your plate. I am a vegetarian, so I have to get pretty creative to keep things interesting but it's working fine. And my husband and I have also learned how to eat healthy while dining out. Who would have guessed pureed cauliflower could taste like mashed potatoes? These's a whole new world of healthy eating out there-eat healthy and loose the pounds!

    Fast and concise - I tested out as severe (scored 50 out of 50) on the scale, was having severe hypoglycemic bouts (blood sugar down to the 40's in the afternoon), and or course, fat and unwell all the time. Weight Watchers and other low fat low calorie left me depressed and unhappy - and if I couldn't last on them a week, how could I last on them a lifetime?

    I was on this diet for almost a year and lost 48 lbs. Then I went into a major lifestyle shakeup, went off, and gained it back. Now I am starting back from scratch, and have lost 15 lbs in 3 mos. The problem is, I am older, and more sensitive to insulin stimulating foods, and it isn't as easy as before.

    But this book is the best I think the Heller's have, very clear and good at explaining the problem true carbohydrate addicts have. I recommend it highly - if it really changes your life, like it did mine, then it will be worth every cent.

    I've been using this program for about three months. I've lost five pounds, according to the chart on which I keep the record of my weight, in a weekly average. Most of the weight has come off my stomach and chin and neck. This is a very welcome change. The weight is coming off at 1/2 to 2/3 pound a week, which seems pretty slow to me, but that's probably impatience talking.

    During the first three or four weeks, I had a hard time adjusting to my new diet. I had headaches a lot, and I sat down every morning to eggs with cheese and sauteed vegetables, and I wanted to throw it on the floor and eat some whole wheat toast with butter and jam and a grapefruit instead. But I stuck with it. It's gotten easier. No more headaches. I really appreciate the freedom from cravings. Actually, I'm nearly free from cravings. With the holidays here and cookie smells all over my office and at home, I'm struggling, but it's not as difficult as it used to be.

    My approach to my diet has always been to pay no attention to trendy diets, to eat a balanced, moderate diet with whole grains, fruits and vegetables, enough protein and fat to balance out the carbs, and keep my sugar intake very low. I started running every day last summer, and even though I was up to three miles a day by the end of the summer, and I had very shapely thighs and buns, I had lost no weight, and no fat. I only need to lose 20-25 pounds, but they have been so, so, so stubborn. I have, before now, approached weight loss primarily through moderation in my diet and exercise. It got very discouraging when over and over, I lost no weight.

    I decided to try CALP after a very discouraging day, and I saw a copy of the old CAD in a health-food store. I read enough to stimulate my interest, then bought a copy of the newer plan, which I think is better. I've tried it, and it's not without difficulties, but it's not without rewards, which I've never seen before.     I love this handy and compact carb counter! There are more than 4,000 food comparisons in this book that are in two user-friendly formats: alphabetical, and hi-low comparison charts. What's also great is that this book provides carb counts for eating out--including chain restaurants like Taco Bell, McDonald's, and Subway. Even carb counts for medications like cough drops and syrup are included!

    The introduction includes a Body Mass Index (BMI) Chart, Range of "Desirable" Weights Chart, and an explanation of carbohydrates.

    This is the BEST carb counter handbook I have ever found. It lists all foods I can think of (broken down by groups) both in alphabetical order AND in High / Low comparison.

    Even if you are on a strict Atkins Diet, this book will serve you better than the Atkins handbook. More comprehensive and easier to use than Atkins. (I have both books.)

    Did you know that Champagne has zero carbs? The Atkins handbook DOES NOT list champagne at all, but the Carbohydrate Addict's Counter book DOES list it. Just one of MANY examples where the this handbook beats the Atkin's handbook.

    I lost my copy of this book and bought Atkins to replace it. What a disappointment Atkins handbook was. (And I'm even on the Atkin's diet.) I'm SO glad I found my copy of this handbook!

    I have used "The Carbohydrate Addict's GRAM COUNTER" for years and decided to get a new copy. The GRAM COUNTER has information on calories, carbs, fats and trigger foods. I ordered "The Carbohydrate Addict's CARBOHYDRATE COUNTER" and was very disappointed to find that it has only carbohydrate information. Now you have to purchase three books to get the same information that the 1995 version gave you for half the price.

    I guess this book does what it is intended to do (provide Carb counts), but I had one disappointment and one criticism...

    My disappointment is that this really is only tied to the Hellers' Diet in spirit only. For example, some of the Hellers' "good" veggies have a higher carb count than some of their "bad" veggies; so if something in this counter book is lower carb than a "good" food, it doesn't necessarily make it a "good" food. I probably would've taken this book to the store with me if it had the Hellers' good and bad lists, too. As it is, I just kinda flipped through and said "huh" a couple of times; I don't think I'll be going back to it very much.

    My criticism is that many foods from around the world - especially veggies - are not included. I found the listed foods rather mundane. We have a fantastic grocery in the area that carries an amazing selection of produce; if the nutritional information is not listed in the grocery (common for these 'exotic' items), I'm pretty much forced to pass on them.     This is an excellent, simply written, but well researched, book on the dangers of bad carbs. I found it extremely enlightening and wondered if it was more than coincidental that Dr. Barry Sears, writes in an amazingly similar vein, in his book "Enter The Zone". It seems that more and more scientists, and doctors, are discovering that we suffer from an overabundance of bad carbs in our eating, and it's also imbalanced versus protein and fat intake.I would heartily recommend this book, and for more scientific corroborative data read "Enter the Zone". Combine this with the sensible exercise program outlined in "Body for Life" by Bill Phillips of EAS Inc., and you will do yourself a very large favour.

    I picked up this book while browsing in a bookstore and it changed my life. I started at 153 pounds and my goal weight was 118. I weighed 116 this morning. And I have more energy, am more mentally alert and upbeat than I ever have been. The book is very motivational. The rules and guidelines for the diet are spread throughout the book so you must read all before starting. Only criticisms are that it's wordy and most of the recipes are bland, but I believe it's the best of all the books the Hellers have written.

    When I began driving a truck I gained 30 pounds in the 1st month. Fortunately I found this book and re-learned how to eat. Doing this diet right is not the easiest thing, breaking food addiction is seldom easy, but if you read this book it will be easier to make happen. I've lost those 30 pounds and more, landing at an ideal wieght that I've never imagined being at again. Good luck, use this book - it's a great resource. Follow where it leads.

    It took me a day to read the book. At first I thought the diet was too good to be true, but I found that everything I read in the book was true. My mouthwatering cravings that I continuously had throughout my life ceased withing 2 days. My energy level skyrocketed and my mood swings actually stopped. For the last 10 years I wanted to take off 20 lbs., I never could do it. I just wanted to thank the Hellers for wrtiting this book.

    The Hellers (co-authors of "The Carbohydrate Addicts Diet") have created an interactive guide for those using their diet plan. This is not a book of tips on how to use their diet plan, but a book that assists the dieter in understanding why they eat, and overeat, the wrong foods. Instead of focusing on the mechanics of diet, the dieter's other concerns: family reactions, childhood patterns, and self-esteem issues are evaluated. This is *not* a stand alone book, you will need to obtain one of the Heller's other books to understand their controlled carbohydrate diet, but if you are on the Heller's diet program, this book is indispensible.

    I started on this way of eating a year ago February. Every one on my Mother's side of the family are large people. I have tried every diet that was ever made and nothing worked. I have lost over 25 lbs and keep it off , since last Feb 99. I will stay on this the rest of my life. I have showed this to other people and they are on this also. I am a farm girl and used to eating bacon and eggs foe breakfast, although i eat other thing also. My Husband in on this also and loves it.     I love this diet plan so much! As a carb addicted teen it's helped me to lose weight and feel better. I've lost 10 pounds already on this diet.     I ordered and read the adult version of this book. Within one week I ordered and read this book knowing that in I would find the answers to my daughter's diet problems. She has been following the program for only 5 days and has already experienced a dramatic drop in cravings. Her behavior and attention has never been better. She has also lost a pound already. I turned to this program as a solution for my weight but have found so much more. Never before had I been relieved of my obsession for sweets and breads. This program did just that for both of us!     The book is excellent. I have read all of the Heller's books and I think this one is one of their best. It makes so much sense and really offers a lot of suggestions on how to help our children change their eating habits, as well as helping our kids achieve weight loss. It also addresses several behavioral issues as possibly being food related and offers suggestions for correcting these behaviors through food. I have been introducing new foods to even my 3 year old daughter like they recommend, and she has responded positively. It really does work.     The authors acknowledge that this book is not for everybody. It is not for the healthy eater who may enjoy second helpings of pasta but isn't compulsive or excessive about eating carbs. It is for the true carbohydrate addict who intensely craves sweets and starches and has a hormonal imbalance that can lead to heart disease if untreated.

    The aim of this program is to "help balance insulin levels and reduce the insulin resistance that leads to carbohydrate cravings, easy weight gain, high blood pressure, abnormal blood fats, adult-onset diabetes, and heart disease." The program involves three basic steps: (1) reducing the high-carbohydrate foods that you eat and increasing their quality; (2) choosing supplements that balance insulin levels; and (3) choosing insulin-regulating physical activities. The writing is clear and inviting. The authors explain medical concepts such as Insulin Resistance Syndrome simply and clearly. They also narrate their own health and weight-loss struggles, adding a personal touch. About 60 recipes are included.

    This book is definitely not just a re-hash of their earlier books. Although it follows most of what they previously wrote, it contains MAJOR improvements and refinements over their old program. Some that I found particularly intereststing are as follows:

    1) Artificial sweeteners are now identified as being culprits in raising blood insulin levels, which relate directly to weight gain and heart risk factors.

    2) Sulfates contained in foods are similarly identified for the first time by the authors.

    3) Many supplements are identified and assessed with extensive bibliographies as they relate to weight control and heart disease.

    4) This book is co-authored by a Cardiologist for the first time, and he incorporates many heart health-related issues and suggestions to form a major difference in the Heller's original book.

    This newest book by the Hellers takes the ball and runs way beyond their earlier publications. There have been many developments since 1993 when they published their original book, and they identify and extensively discuss these updates. I really did not find this to be a rehash at all, but an update.

    There is nothing worse than being a fat, out-of-condition cardiologist! You know your patients are wondering how you can be giving advice when you look like you're going to have a heart attack yourself any minute.Until I found this book I had all but given up.My father and his two brothers suffered heart attacks by age 55. My mother's family had diabetes. I felt as if I was headed straight for a heart attack.My blood fat levels, blood pressure, blood sugar levels and weight were getting worse no matter I tried. I had seen this time and time again in my patients but, to tell the truth, low-fat diets just didn't work for me. I couldn't stay on them and they seemed to make my blood fat levels worse.In the two weeks after finding this book my life has turned around. My cravings are gone - gone - gone. My blood pressure, triglycerides, and blood sugar levels are normal! I'm losing weight even though I have a Reward Meal of my dreams every night.I knew this program made sense when I read it. It was built on good science and it was the first program I felt I could believe in. But living it is even better than I could have hoped for.I started giving copies of this book to my patients.     I have type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. I followed the program this book advises. My blood sugar levels have dropped to normal ranges, 85 to 110. My blood pressure is back to a normal range also. I have even had to quit taking Amaryl because my blood sugar levels were getting too low. I have also lost 22 pounds in about five weeks. The program helps you from giving up because you may eat a reward meal with a high carb food once a day. I'm telling you it works!

    OK...so over the age of 50 I noticed that perhaps I had put on a few pounds. I still run and skate and workout. But I also eat. Many years ago I used the Scarsdale Diet if I needed to lose a few. Today it does nothing. So...I started to try Atkins. I saw the damn thing on the best seller list every week so I figured it had to have some credibility.

    No way. I was starving by the end of the first week. So I tried South Beach. Same thing. I'll never stay with it if I'm dying to sneak ice cream by 9 pm.

    And...being a jerk for these things I then went to Carbo Addicts. Incredible. Follow it and you are not hungry. I have lost 15 pounds in less than 2 months. I get to eat one meal a day of anything I want and I feel great.

    This is the one. Forget Weight Watchers and all the others. Just stick to this and you'll lose with no effort. Trust me.

    I have read this book and am extremely impressed with everything in it except there are some parts that I don't understand. One is dressings on salads I cannot find a dressing out there that has no sugar or msg and also when you say sugar does that mean fructose and corn syrup too?I lost about 10 pounds in 4 days and I have felt great but now that it's been about one week since I have been on it I feel dragged so I don't know if I did something wrong or what.     The book was easy to use, especially the way it included listings for fast food. It's also a great size so you can take it with you anywhere.

    As the author of the first "insulin-conscious" gourmet cookbook ("The Gourmet Prescription: High Flavor Recipes for Lower Carbohydrate Diets"), I'm thrilled that this book is making people more aware of their carbohydrate intake. The carbohydrate binge we've been on for the past decade has made us fat, tired, and sick! Carb-watchers interested in full-flavored, sophisticated food will need more than a gram counter, however. "The Gourmet Prescription" starts where this book ends: It's about intensifying FLAVOR as well as lowering carbohydrates! A full nutritional analysis (including grams of carbohydrate) accompanies each recipe.

    I ordered this along with the Lifespan Book. If you follow that program, they tell which foods you can eat throughout the day. You are not supposed to count carb grams. I have only opened this book twice. I only opened it the second time to search for a reason to use it... I didn't find one.

    If you are a follower of the Carbohydrate Addict Lifespan Program you will quickly find (as I have) that this booklet is totally unnecessary! The whole idea behind the Carbohydrate Addicts books is that measuring is unnecessary. I would rather save the money for the Carbohydrate Addict's recipe book.
