Marilu Henner, known as Elaine on TV's Taxi and star of the musical Chicago, was once very overweight, with sallow skin and a weak immune system. She waffled between starving herself and gorging herself.Since cutting dairy products and caffeine out of her diet, adopting a food-combining plan, and following a program that's code-named "BEST"--for balance, energy, stamina, and toxin-free--she's shaved nearly 100 points off her cholesterol count and 50 pounds off her frame, and she looks younger at 45 than she did at 19. If you don't count her pregnancies, her weight hasn't changed by more than 5 pounds over the past 11 years.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book But Have Problem with Planning a Quick Lunch
Hi, I've changed my lifestyle since I read this book and have lost 10 pds or so (not exactly sure since I've only weighed myself a few times since). I've also dropped a couple of inches but I think that's from exercising. Anyway, I do find that I have less mood swings on this plan, but I have a major problem with lunch. Lunch is my biggest problem because I want quick food I can eat at work and it's so easy to bring in a turkey sandwich or 3 minute soup. I think Marilu should include ideas for planning a quick lunch for at work that meets her guidelines and something that wouldn't require cooking. The combining part is hard for me also because of relatives sometimes. They don't get it. I agree with what others have said about having recipes included in the book. I believe in the book but it is very difficult to follow consistently for a long time. My mind has been opened to the fact that I need to learn more about alternative foods and cooking though...but I do need to do it affordably. Having a strict diet and a strict budget doesn't exactly work.

I bought this book after seeing Marilu Henner talking about her program on a few talk shows. I never expected it to be as densely filled with information as it is. Although implementing her entire program entails some radical steps, she talks about ways to incorporate bite-size steps to begin moving toward a healthier way of life. She emphasizes balanced foods (ying and yang), no dairy, chemicals, or sugar, and food combining. It all sounds a little "out there" but I decided to try it anyway, and I feel great. I've lost a little weight, and I haven't had my usual stomach aches after eating. I highly recommend this book. Even if you don't follow all the steps, it's full of valuable info that you don't find everywhere. Not only is the book informational, it's inspiring, motivational, and funny. Marilu Henner has really educated herself, and she'll educate you, too.

Apparently after years of fluctuating weight, diets, doctors, therapists, nutritionists, etc., etc., Marilu Henner of "Taxi" fame has compiled a book with an approach to bring health and vitality to a new level and to add years to your life. She intends to get you to rid your old lifestyle habits.

CONVERSATIONAL TONE, HUMOROUS - This book is written in a very casual conversational tone. Included are pictures of herself during various stages of her life. It is like she is addressing you personally because the books lacks the hard core technical mumble jumble that most health books contain. Healthy recipes offering colorful pictures fill many pages.

You can follow much of the requirements such as reexamining your relationship with food, your lifestyle and your health. However, when I read about "food combining" I was taken aback! It isn't easy making drastic changes, but when she tells you too watch what foods you combine, I find this just another difficult step that seems quite a challenge. Food combining is when protein and starches are eaten together, it takes too much energy to digest that meal. This is explained thoroughly. Probably one of the most challenging conquests to better living.

THE COMPLETE SCOOP ON OUR POOP! Henner discusses the digestive process and its disorders, everything you ever wanted to know about poop - but were too embarrassed to ask! Everything is here, from consistency, color, how often, how much, etc.

TEN STEP PROGRAM - The book is laid out to cover Ten Steps to a complete makeover - One Step at A Time starting at a beginner level (easing gradually into changes) to makeover maniac.
1. Chemicals - all about reading ingredients.
2. Caffeine Cutting down on caffeine
3. Sugar - actually working toward eliminating everything sweet
4. Meat - that dreaded meat again!
5. Dairy - Giving up dairy products
6. Food Combining - Oh boy, this isn't going to be easy!

The reason I like this book so much is that it is about getting healthy--not getting thin. You may not agree with everything she says, but if you are willing to try some of the steps, you will feel and look better than you ever have in your life. The weight loss follows the healthy living. The book itself could be written a little better, but she seems to have done her homework. Don't try to do all the steps at once, this is about making over your life, which of course does not happen overnight. This is a refreshing break from the high protein, low carb fad.

Marilu Henner's Total Health Makeover changed my life! Marilu put into writing ideas that I had floating around in my mind and made sense of them. Like, why am I eating high fat and lots of red meat on the Atkins diet and trying to fool myself into thinking that it won't effect my health later? And is a pound of fat lost today worth a pound of diseased flesh later in life?

Marilu showed me how to lose weight in an easy, fun, healthy manner. She introduced me to some new ideas about how my digestive system works, and why calves can digest cows milk but I cannot. If only I had known this as a child, it would have saved me years of discomfort. She talks about smart carbs, and how they're good for us - yeah, I love my carbs! And fruit - what a natural cleansing way to start the day, I got my fruit again!

After I read her book I logged onto her Message Boards at and was amazed at the support I found there. And then I discovered her 30-day Total Health Makeover, packed full or recipes and menus for a whole 30 days to show us just how easy it is to eat this way.

I ordered this book not knowing what I needed. I just knew I needed something. I'm not much overweight, having recently lost 18lbs., but I was stalled in my weight-loss, lethargic, and nothing I ate seemed to agree with me. I wanted to dismiss it as celebrity-generated nonsense but once I opened this book I couldn't put it down. I haven't read her first book but reading the reviews, it sounds like she improved and expanded on it with this one (I just ordered it so we'll see). The 30 Day Makeover book is fabulous. I began immediately and in 3 days I already feel energized, have lost 2 lbs. and have an organized sock drawer!! Marilu makes it so simple you don't have an excuse not to try. I love her no-pressure approach to exercise and eating and her explanations make perfect sense. I was always intimated at health food stores but I actually had fun in my grocery store's health food isle. It's a new beginning for me (although I may never give up one cup of coffee in the morning), and I urge anyone who is searching for a way to start to give Marilu's recommendations a try. You won't be disappointed.

When I received this book, I was first pleasantly surprised to finally find someone who loved organization and LISTS as much as me! But to learn how to "organize" my eating habits and understand the trap of meat/sugar/dairy, not to mention the freedom of food-combining, this was just too good to be true. After only one week my energy level is limitless, I feel incredible and YES, HALLELUJAH I'VE LOST WEIGHT!

(One negative note Marilu - and as one fellow organizational freak to another, I'd happily volunteer to proof your next book - the typo's drove me nuts - as I am sure you can understand!)

Still, I'm looking forward to my remaining 3 weeks at ClubMarilu - I can honestly say this is a lifestyle change I've enjoyed implementing and have no intentions on turning back. Thanks!

I have worked with a nutritionist several times in the past. This book summarizes everything the nutritionist told me AND MORE!

It explains how to combine foods to make them work most efficiently for your body. So you can eat whatever, as long as you combine wisely, like having a protein and carb for dinner, but do not have a starch with it. Have a starch separately. And do not drink just before or during a meal since it waters down the enzymes that assist in digesting food. Neat!!

And you can't beat the price! Best $.. I've ever spent!

Some people just don't get it. This book is not just about dieting, but improving your life and living healthy. Like Marilu said "Everything is connected to Everything". I never believed in this theory, but after reading the book.. I have definitely changed my mind.
All I have to say is that this book has definitely made a difference in my life. I am much more organized now. I hear people complaining that who needs a lesson in how to organize your closet. Well, seems like I surely did.

And for those who don't like the food.. hey you don't have to follow the program to the T. Listen to your body and see what's best for you. I made some changes since I don't like fish that much.. and it works.

I don't object to what the author says so much as what she leaves out. She makes many assertions, but usually fails to give support or references for them. I would find her much more convincing if, instead of saying "Milk is toxic sludge that only cows should eat! YUCK!" (paraphrasing here, sorry) she would list some of the studies that have proved this to be true. I could even like the "YUCK!" if she had any proof of the fact behind it. While I admire her attempt to change the standard American diet, I found this book to be, frankly, something of an insult to my intelligence.

Because it is a potentially good springboard to more advanced books, I must grudgingly give this two stars. However, if you're interested in a more healthful, vegetarian diet and have the slightest interest in knowing *why* these choices are better, I strongly recommend skipping this and instead buying John Robbins' "Diet for a New America" or any of Dr. Andrew Weil's books, particularly, "Eating Well for Optimum Health." ... This book is awesome! I love that there are healthy and delicious menus every day, for thirty days - and there are also vegetarian and on-the-go options so you can switch out menus any time you like. And while you're following the menus, you can follow Marilu's wonderful tips on anything from organizing your home - to your life! Marilu has fun beauty secrets that she shares each day, motivational tips, and lots of great exercise information. She even helps us "fake it 'til we make it." There's a great online support website at, and I found this to be most helpful in finding others who wanted a healthier lifestyle. There are online support classes every month, as well. Thanks Marilu for a great book that truly changed my life!

I got this book and was pretty enthusiastic about complying until realizing that most of the meals are fish! I hate fish! There's also some whacky reasoning as far as digestion goes. I think it would work not b/c of the diet but from the conviction required by the dieter.

I must admit I haven't quite started with the makeover yet, I'm just browsing through the book and gathering strength and the food needed. I'd say that after reading through the book, it seems like it's worth giving a try. I'm not much of a health freak (to say the least) and being a political journalist I live quite a hectic life. But that's a good reason for me to try and live healthy for at least a month. Ms. Henner states in her book that this month will change my life. I can't tell yet if it does, but why not try? It's spring, the time for renewal, the effort itself I put into renewing my body and soul might as well pay off.
Even if I don't yet know if it works or not, I've given this book a five-star rating, because Ms. Henner's writing style is charming, the tips she offers as part of the makeover seem useful and the food is easy to prepare (which is an important factor for someone like me that usually lives on microwave food). So, go ahead, if you feel like some change could do you good, try her tips!

Marilu Henner has a winner here! This book is packed with ideas to help us plan special parties and celebrations throughout the year. New Year's, Super Bowl Sunday, Valentine's, - even an Academy Awards Party! Name a special day - Marilu covers it. She explains the tradition of each holiday. She offers delicious and healthy menu suggestions and recipes. She also helps to plan the invitations, set the atmosphere, create activities, and propose the toast! And she makes it all so much fun with great personal stories along the way. This is a great book for anyone planning a special celebraton day - Marilu shows us how to do it all!

I wanted to add a good review for this book because people have written negative things about it. The recipes are so good! I made several for different parties and everyone loved them. There's lots of other info, but if you're not interested, don't read it! Yes, it's true that the index is not thorough enough for a book that's organized differently like this one is, but that's the only drawback to this healthy cookbook.

I've been following Marilu Henner's plan for a number of years and I was counting the days for this book to be released. I am so thrilled to have it and have already given some away as gifts.

The food is the main event of course, but there is so much more to this book. First and foremost the emphasis is on enjoying the holidays and making them a celebration. And I just love the fact that maintaining a healthy lifestyle gives us more energy for doing just that. The recipes in all of Marilu's books contain high quality ingredients. When I first started following this plan I wondered what I would eat if I wasn't eating meat dairy or sugar. I found out that the answer is GREAT FOOD !!!

This book also contains a lot of tips and suggestions for parties, even mentioning ideas for invitations and scents. What I love about that is that it adds another dimension. It's not just about the food. And those lists can inspire you to come up with even more ideas. The creativity in this book makes it so much fun to read. So much more than just a recipe book !!!

I love to entertain and this book is giving me so many ideas for ways to make entertaining more interesting and special.

I have so much more energy, and love life so much, since starting this plan. I have Marilu to thank for that. And now I can thank her for making my holiday shopping so easy !! I am giving copies to anyone who may have me to dinner this year !

I absolutely loved Marilu's previous books and couldn't wait to receive a copy of her new book "Healthy Holidays". Unfortunately, the book is very disappointing.

"Healthy Holidays" is very disorganised. Recipes are not categorised like normal cookbooks eg entree, soup, dessert etc. Instead, the recipes are listed under each holiday eg Valentine's Day, Christmas Day etc. Too bad if you are looking for recipes for a "non-holiday" or you don't like her suggestions for the Christmas menu. I was looking for inspiration for a salad one night and had to go through every holiday in the book to find a salad I liked. She should have simply stuck with the normal categorisations and then given a list of suggested menus for each occasion.

The book should have also included a glossary and a conversion table. There are lots of ingredients which I have never even heard of! Moreover, there were no conversions at all. I am Australian and when I refer to any recipe in "Healthy Holidays" I have to refer to my other recipe books to find out the conversions!

In addition, possible substitutions would have been good. For example, I have been unable to find maple sugar - can maple syrup or honey be used instead? What is whole-wheat pastry flour? Is that just what we Aussies refer to as wholemeal plain flour?

The book was also filled with lots of "mumbo jumbo". I don't care what Marilu ate whilst filming a movie in Spain - I doubt anyone does. We simply want to have great recipes to work with.

I was desperately disappointed with this book. If you want a good recipe book, buy "Healthy Life Kitchen". Give "Healthy Holidays" a miss.

I loved Marilu's previous books and couldn't wait for Healthy Holidays to be released. Unfortunately, upon receiving a copy of Healthy Holidays I'm sad to say that it was incredibly disappointing.

I found the layout of the book to be incredibly frustrating. She should have kept with her normal style and listed foods under Protein, Carbs, Dessert, Entree etc. Instead, the recipes are all listed under each holiday eg Valentine's Day, Halloween etc. Too bad if you want to flick through to find an entree or a special dessert to make on a "non holiday". Instead you have to sift through each holiday to find a recipe to your liking.

Also, the book is filled with lots of "mumbo jumbo". I don't want to know about what Marilu ate when she was filming a movie in Spain. I just want to view healthy recipes!

A glossary would have been useful - there are a lot of ingredients that I've never even heard of! A conversion table would also have been helpful (being Australian I'm always having to check conversions in my other recipe books).

It is very easy to be intimidated by the food combining concept. However, Healthy Life Kitchen is easy to read and is well organized. Marilu walks you through a health food store and recommends certain brands (thus, less homework for us). She even created a basic shopping list. The charts of healthy substitutions and sweetener conversions are very useful. The chart on additives was a real eye opener for me. I didn't realize all the garbage I was putting into my body and my children's bodies. (I've been a bodybuilder for years and thought I knew it all!)The recipes are also wonderful. There is a number of easy to prepare and tasty meals. I'm very excited about this book!

I'm not vergetarian, but I am dairy free. After looking for a cookbook with dairy-free recipes for quite some time with no luck, Marilu's book came at the perfect time. After reading some of the other comments, I do want to say that if you are truly ready to make the changes in your life and get rid of the sugar, dairy, caffeine, chemicals, etc., this book will help you to no end. Marilu may not be a nutritionist, and she never claims to be, by the way -- but she has lived a life of healthy food and she looks great! That's enough of a "credential" for me. Marilu speaks what she knows and her books are undeniably life-changing. However, you have to be ready to make the changes and drop any resistance. I really enjoy some of the new features in this cookbook, like the cost guide, where the meals fit in on the color rainbow, and the complexity level. Never being much of a cook before I did Total Health Makeover, Marilu's easy recipes made me feel like a gourmet chef. I knew next to nothing about health foods and, armed with Marilu, she made going grocery shopping fun. And to those who think her meals are pricy, think about eating out in what it costs to buy a meal for one, you can cook for your family, or have lunchtime leftovers for a few days. Trust me, the book and the program will comepletely change your life if you let it!! You'll have more consistent energy, you'll feel like a million bucks, and perhaps most importantly, you'll look better :-)

I'm always looking for healthy, nutritious meals to feed my family. There are so many great recipes in this book - and everyone loves them! From meatloaf to mac & cheese, from muffins to cookies - everything we've tried has been excellent! Plus, so many of the recipes are good enough to serve company - and cheaper than eating at a restaurant. Even if you don't follow Marilu's health and diet plan, you'll love these recipes. They're amazingly good, and good for you, too!

I LOVE this book! I have tried several of the receipes and they have all been hits with my family. I found the section about going through your kitchen to be very helpful. I also thought the section about shopping in the health food store was great! I would never have been able to find all the things I was looking for. I was having some minor health problems and with the changes in my diet I am now completely off all medications. I have so much more energy and feel great. I hope that Marilu continues to write this type of book. I found it easy and enjoyable to read.

Yes, the recipes are easy - you can prepare much of this food with kids 10 and over. Plus it's kid-friendly food, not as gourmet as Marilu's other cookbooks. I also really liked all the info on development stages of children - for people who don't have time to research childhood development, it was great to have the info in one place, and to relate children's health to what they eat, and what they do (movement & activities).

As a comment on a previous reviewer's observation about soy substitutes for dairy products; I have found plenty of vegan non-dairy subs (no casein) - they are becoming more and more available as demand for them increases. Also, there are subs made from other products (rice, oat, almond, etc) that contain NO casein. Going completely dairy-free has cleared up allergies, acne, and weight problems at our house. It's worth my time to search out the right subs.

Even though I am a vegetarian and eat very healthy, I have felt a little lost about how to pass on the importance of healthy food to my daughter. People are always asking me how will I handle certain situations when she is no longer a baby and I do not control everything that goes into her body. For example, how to handle McDonald's birthday parties or school snacks without making her feel like the odd one in the bunch. This book gives great advice on how to handle these situations in a positive manner as well as how to make healthy eating a lifestyle for the entire family. I also love the recipes and knowing that I can still bake homemade desserts for my family, just without all the processed sugar and dairy. I have already tried some of the recipes and they have been a hit so far. Thank you Marilu - every parent should read this book!

I am a mom of three children with galactosemia. I bought this book because I know how Marilu Henner deplores milk and milk products. Although most of the book deals with how to get your kids healty I bought it for the recipes for my preschoolers. Many of the recipes calls for soy cheese or soy yogurt. Almost every varity of these "non dairy" soy products are made from caseinate. This IS a form of dairy. The recipes given aren't anything new. They are recipes you can find in your cookbooks already on your shelf. She just removes the meat and dairy products and substitutes them for soy. If you are wanting info on how to get your kids healthy buy the book. If you are wanting new ideas on what to feed your kids look elswhere. I already knew carrot sticks and celery were better for my kids than pop tarts. I didn't need to spend $20 to read it.

This is a long needed and long expected book. For so many years we have been told that "kids do not grow up without meat" (meat meaning usually beaf). Now there is so much information about why we should not be eating meat, that it is unthinkable to be sticking to that old know-it-all statement. The truth is, the main problem with a meat-free diet, has always been how to make it attractive to the kids. Well, this book offers so many tasty, nutritious and inviting recipies that all toddlers will find food to their liking. Plus, with all the sound information Ms. Henner provides in her familiar style, all mums, caterers, nurseries, etc. will find encouragement to stay and help kids stay meat-free, active and healthy. Thank you Ms. Henner! A job well done!

Please read this book and take action to help save our children from the health crisis that threatens their entire lives!

While they are many excellent resources for adults on how to eat right, exercise, control weight, and avoid harmful substances to reduce the risk of disease or reverse the effects of disease already experienced, little is said about children. This publishing focus reflects a national obsession with helping adults while assuming kids will be all right. Not true!

We are in the midst of a terrible tragedy in terms of undermining children's health before they are even through their full physical development. Ms. Henner deserves a huge thanks for taking this subject on, and doing a fine job with it!

The data are clear. Children of five often have unhealthy cholesterol levels. Childhood obesity and many related diseases such as diabetes are on the rise. ADD and depression are soaring. Allergy-related problems are often chronic by age six. Many of these problems will stay the same or get worse in adult years. For example, those who are obese while young will usually be obese as adults. That increases the risk for many diseases, especially diabetes and heart problems. The causes relate to eating the wrong foods, too little exercise, and parents doing a poor job of offsetting social influences (like advertising to kids, vending machines for candy at school, and supersize meals at fast food restaurants) in these areas. If your kids are having a lot of ear infections, are tired all the time, are grumpy or hyper alternatively, have asthma, or are overweight, this book will probably help you make changes that will enable your child to improve.

If you want a quick overview of the problems and the solutions, Dr. Peter S. Waldstein's foreword captures the key points.

While many books on subjects like this rant about the problem but provide little guidance, Healthy Kids is a happy exception. There's lots of practical advice about what food to buy and prepare at home, what to do when eating out, how to improve the food at school, ways to increase exercise, and suggestions about getting rid of and avoiding toxins. The book contains over 100 healthy recipes for foods that kids like, that can substitute for traditional, unhealthy ways of preparing the same or similar foods.

I was particularly impressed by the detailed advice related to each age group through college. The book begins by pointing out that 85 percent of children today don't get enough breast milk for proper brain development. Human breast milk has six times the fatty acids critical for brain development that cow's milk has. And cow's milk can cause allergies for some that lead to respiratory and ear infections.

My only complaints about the book were that it did not take a look at how blood type affects different youngsters; usually ignored the differences between what girls and boys need; argued for separating and combining different foods without making a case for why that was a good idea; and did not have a section on drinking enough water.

The sections on why to avoid sugar, white flour, the wrong fats, hormones, caffeine, beef, dairy products, and other artificial chemicals were very well done. The related sections on how to avoid them were even better!

Ms. Henner is ready to be your success coach in this important area. As she points out, your child's pediatrition got almost no training in these areas and probably won't make the right suggestions relating to diet and exercise. Even if you have a pediatrition who does provide good advice on what to do, she or he won't know much about how to help make the changes.

After you finish this excellent book and place it where you make your grocery shopping lists, I suggest that you think about how you can improve your children's emotional health, too. How many hugs and kisses did they each get today? How many kind words did you share?

Let's put an end to unnecessary suffering by our children!

Okay, being a has-been TV star and writing books telling people to avoid breads and dairy products does NOT qualify you to write a book on raising children.

Dr. Ruth Sharon's insites were sometimes good. But Marilu`s additions were horrible. Some of them didn`t even answer the question. The perfect example was one woman who complained that she and her husband disagreed with if the children should keep their rooms tidy. She then goes on and says what SHE does and how her brothers were known to grown interesting plantlife when she was a child. THAT HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE QUESTION. And one of the chapters she wrote just had me fumming. I am convinced that Marilu Henner has any idea of what life is like in the real world. It was a chore to make it through this entire book.

Reading this book is like shopping at a thrift-shop. You`ve got to go through a ton of garbage to find a few pounds of something useful. Some of their ideas were worth discussing with my wife. But all in all, I don`t think the time I (quote unquote) invested into this book had any valuable return.

There are so many other parenting books out there that are more worth the time to read. Don`t waste any time on this one.

When I was trying to conceive my first child I stumbled upon this and other books by Marilu Henner. I thought it offered great insights into things that a new or even established parent should and should not do if they want to raise a healthy, respectful and well-behaved child.

In a society that has an abundance of unhealthy children I find this book to be great at educating parents in a non-threatening way. Sure Marilu cracks jokes, she is a very funny lady. Sure she is considered a celebrity but more so since she became an author. I think she has done what many people would love to do, take something they are passionate about, write it all down and share it with others. She didn't get a book deal just because she is also an actress and she wouldn't continue to write nor get the book deals if her books didn't sell.

Take the time to read this book with an open mind and I bet there is at least a dozen things that will make you think about how great Marilu must be as a mother. I guarantee that if you were ever to meet Nicky or Joey you would find them both well behaved and extremely respectful!

If you don't want to spend the money, at least check it out from a local library! You won't be sorry that you did!

This is probably the worst childrearing book I have ever read. Where should I begin? As others have previously said, the breastfeeding advice is just plain stupid, and if Marilu got an award from LLL shouldn't she be aware that the World Health organisation reccommends b/f for 2 years and beyond? This has been done for 99.9% of human history ---- were all our ancestors 'overindulged'??!! (in fact, it is well known that societies in which children are breastfed for a few years produce children that are happier, better-adjusted, and respectful --- read 'The Continuum Concept')

As has the 'family bed', most people in the world sleep this way now and seperate sleeping arrangements have only been around for about 200 years, even in the West. The example she provided about cosleeping was to the extreme, and it is a fact that more babies die in cribs than their parents bed (check out for more info)Common sense is the key when cosleeping - it is important to follow safety reccomedations, and there should be no problem.

I am not for permissive parenting, but it seems to me this book has gone to the other extreme and takes the stance that all instinctive nurturing is harmful. There is a middle-ground to be had between permissive and authoritarian, if we recognise that children are PEOPLE, and not nuisances to be cut down to size.

I couldn't believe that this appalling Dr. Sharon was praising parents who both worked till 8pm for instilling a good 'work ethic' in the child. Is she trying to assauge her own guilt or something? I was flabbergasted.

I am just saddened that some people will read this book and disregard their own instincts to follow its advice. I certainly would not want to be the child of that Dr. Sharon!

If you want to raise insecure, lonely, joyless, frightened children this is the book for you.

I'm not surprised that there are a lot of scathing reviews of this book. Just look at the kids out there these days. America has more badly behaved, spoilt, obese, lazy, diabetic, violent, attention deficit disordered kids than any other country in the world. Obviously parents of those kind of kids bought into the "Listen closely to your kid's wants and needs. Treat them as an equal" kind of modern parenting books. Of course they would totally disagree with Marilu's solid, good old-fashioned advice. Marilu's advice harks back to the days when kids WEREN'T shooting up schools with automatic weapons and schools didn't need metal detectors at each entrance to screen for weapons. If all these new soft approach books are right, why are the kids these days so screwed up? Why, when parents were much stricter and less accomodating to their child's every whim, were the kids more polite, respectful, had a much better work ethic and way, way less out of control. I love the bit where Marilu says that spoilt kids don't grow up to thank their parents for giving them everything they always wanted. They usually have no respect for them. Unfortunately my wife and I have opposite opinions about raising our two boys (2 & 4). My wife hates to see them cry, so she constantly gives into their demands. As a result, it's much harder work for her to be around the kids than myself because they are much needier and brattier with her than they are with me. If you are firm, consistent and make the rules simple, the kids really quickly realise that it's a waste of their time whining and crying about the silly stuff and are much happier for it. If I put the kids to bed, I can leave them to fall asleep by themselves. I tell them that I'll come back in a couple of minutes to check on them. I may have to do this once and there maybe a little half-hearted grumbling about being left alone but it's usually an extremely rewarding and painless experience. If my wife puts them to bed, she can't leave the room without the sound of screaming kids following after her and usually ends up staying in their room until they fall asleep. I ask you, which scenario is most likely going to produce an independent, happy and confident child? Kids are constantly checking for chinks in our parental armour. If they find a weak spot, even at a very early age, they are incredibly smart and know how to take advantage of it. It's mindblowing to me how they do this. But I agree with Marilu, I think kids want and need rules to be in place and stuck to. They are more secure knowing that their parents are actually in charge and have things under control. Anybody know how to get in contact with Ruth Velikvsky Sharon Ph.d. who helped Marilu with the book? I'd like to get in touch with her.

Oh, and financially successful parents who had nothing as a child (the " I want my kids to have the nice things that I never had" types) , stop giving your kids brand new BMWs when they're sixteen. There are undiscovered tribes in the Amazon jungle who know that this is a terrible, terrible thing to do to your child. What the hell do they have to aspire to if they're handed stuff like that on a plate. Yeah, give them a car...a car that is uncool enough that they want to get a job to earn money to pay for a cooler one. It's so simple.

This book was horrible. Most of the book is done in a Q&A format, and Dr. Sharons responses are usually a cold and simple 'You're doing it wrong and your kid is going to grow up to be a drug addict because of you.' After her response, Ms. Henner gives her answer in one of two formats: 'This is how my parents did it,' or a stupid joke that avoids the question.

The authors make generalized comments on sensitve issues that are entirely based upon the norms of our culture, and they are completely intolerant of other views on child rearing. This is probably the worst 'You're doing everything wrong' book I've ever read. It is so full of self-promotion it makes me sick. She Obviously thinks her parents did a great job, just look at how wonderful she is!
I actually might have given this book a 2, because I completely agree that children aren't helped be answering to their whim and shielding them from all the responsibility and heartache of real life. It was Dr. Sharons comment that a child whose parents both work until 8 at night is somehow benefiting by having parents with a strong work ethic that earned her boycott status.

These women annoy me so much that I don't think I'll ever be able to purchase anything with either of their names on it again. ... Read more
