    Book Description

Anatomy of the Spirit is the boldest presentation to date of energy medicine by one of its premier practitioners, internationally acclaimed medical intuitive Caroline Myss, one of the "hottest new voices in the alternative health/spirituality scene" (Publishers Weekly). Based on fifteen years of research into energy medicine, Dr. Myss's work shows how every illness corresponds to a pattern of emotional and psychological stresses, beliefs, and attitudes that have influenced corresponding areas of the human body.

Anatomy of the Spirit also presents Dr. Myss's breakthrough model of the body's seven centers of spiritual and physical power, in which she synthesizes the ancient wisdom of three spiritual traditions-the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life-to demonstrate the seven stages through which everyone must pass in the search for higher consciousness and spiritual maturity. With this model, Dr. Myss shows how you can develop your own latent powers of intuition as you simultaneously cultivate your personal power and spiritual growth.

By teaching you to see your body and spirit in a new way, Anatomy of the Spirit provides you with the tools for spiritual maturity and physical wholeness that will change your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent overview of spiritual matters.....
In the last part of ANATOMY OF THE SPIRIT, Caroline Myss unites her discussion of three belief systems (Roman Catholic Sacraments, Kabbalah Tree of Life, and Hindu Chakras) within the concept of living in the present moment. Many who have trod the spiritual path Myss describes and faced the Three Big Crises - absence of meaning and purpose; strange new fears; and devotion to something greater than one's self - will appreciate her final words. Suffering produces spiritual rewards.

Not everyone will appreciate Myss' book. I would like to send the audio version to my 87-year old aunt who is devoutly Roman Catholic, but I don't think she would like it. My Southern Baptist aunt would probably disown me. My daughter would appreciate it - but she's a fan of Bishop Pike. For a change, Myss has written a book older folks will appreciate more than younger ones.

I know something about the sacraments having been raised with them. I've also acquired a great deal of knowledge about the Chakras in the past 40 years (via reading and Hindu friends). I have studied the Kabbalah (it is far more complex than Myss' book indicates). Like Joseph Campbell whom she apparently see as a model, Myss sees a larger truth underlying religious structures and/or tribal systems of belief.

Myss is billed as an expert on energy medicine. In the early 1980s, I had the pleasure and privilege of being in Louis Hay's home. I can testify that "whatever your mind can conceive and believe it will achieve." Whenever I have an ailment, I whip out Hays' healing books (Myss cites one of them). Healing takes many forms. Doctors mostly facilitate the process or mess it up. The power of positive thinking, prayer, the laying on of hands, and laughter all work to heal the body-mind-spirit. What Myss shares is not new, but if you haven't heard about it elsewhere you can learn more here.

This is a good book. I've heard, read, and/or experienced most of what Myss describes so I can testify to the truthfulness of it. If you are ready to move beyond tribal boundaries and become whole this may be the book for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars Anatomy lessons.
Caroline Myss, Ph.D. is a medical intuitive and a specialist in energy medicine. Whenever she visits Boulder, she draws a big crowd, and her sold-out lecture last week promoting her current bestseller, SACRED CONTRACTS, was no exception. "According to energy medicine, we are all living history books," she writes in ANATOMY OF THE SPIRIT. "Our bodies contain our histories--every chapter, line, and verse of every event and relationship in our lives" (p. 40). She maintains, in other words, that as our lives unfold, our biography becomes our biology (p. 40).

In ANATOMY OF THE SPIRIT, Myss attempts to connect the dots between body and spirit by integrating the wisdom of several spiritual traditions, the Hindu chakras, the Christian sacraments, and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life. She draws from the ancient wisdom of these teachings to radically redefine spiritual and biological health, and to help us understand "what keeps us healthy, what makes us ill, and what helps us heal" (p. 67). The central premise of her book is that our past and present, personal and professional relationships, traumatic experiences and memories, beliefs and attitudes all become "encoded" in our biological anatomies, and then contribute to the formation of cell tissue, which generates energy reflecting our emotional strengths, weaknesses, hopes and fears (p. 34). Dr. Myss teaches us how to move through our wounds, rather than living in them (p. 60). While in her book she says that disease is the result of our negative emotions (p. 43), during her more recent Boulder lecture, Myss acknowledged she no longer believes this, and that this incorrect assertion has caused many to needlessly suffer, while trying in vain to identify the nonexistent negativity in their lives.

In her truly fascinating book, Myss reveals how we are simultaneously matter and spirit, and she encourages us to think about how matter and spirit interact, "what draws the spirit and life force out of our bodies, and how we can retrieve our spirits from the false gods of fear, anger, and attachments of the past" (p. 77). To those readers like me, who may be a bit skeptical of the anatomy lessons Myss offers here, she encourages us take from her book only what feels right to our heart and spirit, leaving the rest behind (p. 94).

1-0 out of 5 stars Listen and take what you can
Not very good at all. The whole lecture comes from a christian standpoint. Caroline searches for the basic truths that all older folk-based religions possess, but realizes the christian "religion" does not have these truths. Then she begins to relate the sacraments to the chakras, saying that the truths are hidden. This may be so, but through the finding of these truths she reccomends things like praying to god for help, admitting that your anger is your own fear and asking god to help you. I find this very weak, as I do the whole christian religion. It seems the "new age" thinkers are still trying to twist christianity into the spiritually uplifting religion that every other religion is. Its funny that it has never been taught by nuns or priests the way it is being "interpretted" now.
I don't advocate asking for help from god when things go wrong. I don't believe getting angry with someone shows that I am somehow afraid of something within me-and therefore must submit to god. The church and their bible do not advocate finding your own way through the path of spirituality yet the new age idea of christianity twists it to say it does. Just drop your bible and the whole christian influence as a whole and learn from your blood. A religion that never came from it's own people, but was forced upon them can NEVER lead us to a path of spirituality no matter what you "interpret" it to be.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and Wonderful!
I recently survived a serious illness and I feel that owe a lot of this to Caroline Myss and this book that she wrote. As she says in this book, our body is a reflection of our state of mind in many ways. Because of this book, I have been focusing on bringing myself to a healthy state of mind which leads to a healthy body. In doing so, I am learning so much about my own personal, emotional, and spiritual development partially through this book but also from other incredible books like "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato (this one is also a wonderfully inspirational, enlightening, absolutely great book by the way!). I love how Myss puts together some of parallels in the spiritual traditions of Hinduism, Judaism, and Christianity and tries to show us that these teachings are all trying to guide us in a similar, if not the same, direction. Wonderful, Wonderful book! Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars A bit lacking, but good
After reading many many books by several empowering authors such as Deepak Chopra, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Dalai Lama, Marianne Williamson, and Tiffany Snow, that I am still reading, my life has opened up to me in such a compelling and wonderful way. There are great transforming authors, who shift the consciousness of humankind in a way never known before. The "Anatomy of the Spirit" tries to do this, but is lacking in some ways. It is a good book, but not great. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Useful, Inspired
Energy Medicine is the most useful book I have read in the field of energy work for the layperson. Donna Eden and David Feinstein have collaborated to create an invaluable guide for everyone interested in improving health by balancing energy. Donna has many years of experience in practicing energy work and teaching, and she has done a wonderful job of creating a unique hybrid of methods into easy-to-use everyday routines. The book is rich in illustrations and instructions, all well-indexed. I believe everyone, at any level of health, can benefit from this book. Good for beginners, but extensive and detailed enough to provide deep study. I've bought many copies as gifts for loved ones; they all say it's the best they've seen.

5-0 out of 5 stars Landmark work in energy medicine, wide-ranging and useful
As a physician interested in helping patients achieve wellness, I was fascinated by Donna Eden's Energy Medicine. I maintain a large library of books on complementary health topics. Among the hundreds of books in the category of Energy this book STANDS OUT as the only book to my knowledge that addresses so many different energy systems. I have wondered how to reconcile chakras, meridians, etc. and Donna Eden does just that. The book is also unique because it demystifies and provides access to many routines that can be used for self-help. Many books are full of esoterica and mystery that leave the reader with useless knowledge. Energy Medicine is full of practical information.

Chapters deal with major topics. Within each chapter are "How-to Boxes," giving specific suggestions on how to manage over 30 different common problems. The short Daily Energy Routine in Chapter 3 has benefited everybody who continues to do it.

I bought the videos because I wanted to see Donna at work and I wanted to see some of the movements. They are an excellent addition to the book.

Energy Medicine is a gold mine of information. Every time I dig for a nugget, I get something out of it. The book bears re-reading, and I can testify that the effort is time well-spent. My copy is dog-eared from use. I purchased a second book as a loaner because I recommend it so frequently.

Optimal health has been defined as the unlimited and unimpeded free flow of life force energy through body, mind and spirit. This book introduces you to techniques which make that possible.

5-0 out of 5 stars Energy Medicine Made Easy
As an energy practitioner, I have experienced many "healers" who have been sincere in their dedication and devotion to God, the clients, and to the healing profession. However, Donna Eden is like none other. She explains the various techniques in a simplistic, practical manner. Anyone can use the techniques within this text. It is clear that her intention is not to be heralded as a guru, master, or mystical being. Her purpose is to help teach and heal those interested in the healing arts. I have read the book and watched her Energy Healing video; both are phenomenal! This is a Must Read text for anyone in the healing arts.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Most AWEsome Volume!!!
10 Stars!!! The word-pictures Donna paints - telling of her own experiences make me envious! I feel left out in some way, but I feel sure that I can come up to her level given time & following the teaching... Very grateful that the book is out here for us to read and gain insights to a wonderfull process. I have given the book to others as a gift, I only wish I had found it sooner - but probably wasn't ready earlier. :) Great explanations on 'how to do it' abound, and it is a worthy reference for Masters & Beginners alike imo! Thank you Donna!! ~ric~

5-0 out of 5 stars Not a book for people who enjoy feeling bad!
If you are one of those rare people who really has no interest in feeling good and having more energy, then, whatever you do, don't buy this book. If you do, don't do a single one of the exercises. You are forewarned that doing these exercises will likely mean that you're going to experience:

    * Improved health
    * Elevated moods
    * A sense of well-being
    * A genuine spring in your step
    * Energy levels you probably haven't experienced in years

This is a book that's jam-packed with information that's easy to use, yet extremely effective. Eden is generous with her techniques, and for those willing to actually practice them, lives will change for the better--physically, mentally, and spiritually.

I cannot recommend this book strongly enough, or often enough. I've experienced my own miracles from using these techniques, and watched as others who tried them found their own personal miracles.

But it's really not for those who want to maintain an existence of pain, low energy, and bad moods. Those people need to avoid this book at all costs!

    Book Description

For more than two decades, internationally renowned pioneer in energy medicine Caroline Myss has been studying how people use their personal power. Through her special brand of spiritual insight and intuition, her popular workshops, and her bestselling books, Myss has helped hundreds of thousands of people meet the lifelong challenge of managing their spiritual energy and improving their lives.

Now, in this inspiring new book, Myss expands her message about power in an entirely new spiritual direction. With characteristic originality, she explains how we become channels for divine grace and a conduit for miracles through kind, compassionate, generous actions or, as she calls them, invisible acts of power. When we act compassionately, without a private agenda or expectation of credit or reward, God works invisibly, anonymously through us. And as we move from visible acts, such as giving a friend a helping hand, to invisible acts, such as prayer and healing, we undergo a profound journey of personal empowerment.

Myss explores the seven stages of the practice of compassion and generosity and shows that the choice to do good, to act in service to others, is as essential to our physical and emotional health as it is to our intuitive development. In fact, she reveals, generosity is a biological and a spiritual necessity.

As she conveys these insights, Myss tells her trademark electrifying personal stories along with numerous others about life-changing acts of service, chosen from among more than twelve hundred letters that were sent to her Web site. The myriad simple but profound ways that people connect to create small miracles, gain a greater sense of spirituality, and transform their own -- and others' -- lives in an instant will inspire you to your own invisible acts of power...and attract them to you. ... Create Powerful Changes in Your Life, with the Energy of Your Own Self-Esteem

What is self-esteem? A type of confidence? Or something far greater? On Self-Esteem, Caroline Myss casts a new light on this often misunderstood subject, redefining self-esteem as an actual "core power" that is essential to our evolutionary progress. In fact, Myss teaches, your potential for success in life is determined by how greatly you "esteem" or value who you truly are. Building on her revolutionary bestsellers Anatomy of the Spirit and Sacred Contracts, Myss explores:

    • How your strong self-esteem threatens other people – and why you must strengthen it anyway
    • How your intuition, spiritual guidance, self-healing capacity, and your self-esteem all depend on each other
    • PLUS special guided exercises for cultivating healthy, vibrant self-esteem, available only on this audio session, and much more

"You change the rules or you are going under." ~Caroline Myss

Imagine a life where no one can intimidate you, where you have an invisible sense of knowing who you are, a life where you are no longer fighting for the right to be alive.

Are you willing to change the rules? Are you playing games with people in your life who do not have your best interests at heart? Are you afraid of what you want most? One of the most beautiful spiritual gifts anyone has given me was introducing me to the Caroline Myss Self-Esteem CDs.

You will learn the details of why:

    1. People with healthy self-esteem heal faster.
    2. The old view of self-esteem differs from the new view.
    3. Wars are started due to lack of self-esteem.
    4. Meditation is not the only answer.
    5. People around you won't celebrate your empowerment.
    6. Knowledge is not a spiritual practice.
    7. Standing up for yourself can change your entire life.
    8. We destroy others to compensate for our own fears.
    9. Our greatest fears are being alone and abandoned and how we smother people.

Any fans of the Advanced Energetic Anatomy CD's, Anatomy of the Spirit CD's, Spiritual Power - Spiritual Practice CD's will love this - they will not be disappointed. Caroline is always educational, and is a brilliant teacher. We are so lucky to be alive in this era; and to be able to listen to and act upon her teachings.

    Book Description

Archetypes are ancient, universal patterns of behavior that are embedded in what Carl Jung called the "collective unconscious." Caroline Myss has created a unique set of 80 Archetype Cards, each individually designed to provide the basic Light and Shadow Attributes of a different Archetype.

The deck also contains six blank cards on which you can create your own Archetypes. The deck comes with an instruction booklet explaining how to use the cards to help determine which Archetypes are most active in your psyche, and how they can lead you to achieve greater insights into your life. The deck is suitable to be used by itself, in conjunction with Caroline’s book Sacred Contracts, or with any of her workshops and seminars. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Essential Archetype Card Collection
"..archetypes are not passive entities floating around in the psyche like old family portraits hanging in a dusty ancestral castle. They take an active role as guardians and inner allies, awakening you when you're in danger of falling into destructive behavior." ~Caroline Myss

Caroline Myss has created an 80-card deck with an instruction booklet. The informative booklet is essential for understanding the Archetype Cards, however choosing the cards was quite an easy process. Within a few minutes you find all the cards you need to understand which Archetypes are most active in your psyche. This can encourage a greater understanding of who you are and your purpose in life.

Everyone has the "Child, Victim, Saboteur and Prostitute (not for sale)." There are few different "child" elements to choose from.

The booklet explores the meaning of each card, but I really think the cards will jump out at you when you see your inner world unfolding in pictures. When I went through the entire pack for the first time, I ended up with two extra cards. Once I thought about it a bit more, I took out the two extra cards and finally had the correct cards.

My cards turned out this way:

    1. Child - Magical/Innocent Child - Sees the potential for sacred beauty in all things. The belief that everything is possible.

    2. Victim - This Archetype reveals areas where you might allow yourself to be victimized. Also deals with forming personal boundaries.

    3. The Saboteur - Fears related to self-esteem that might cause you to block your own empowerment and success.

    4. Prostitute - Not what you think, but rather it means that you are "not for sale." This shows your need to birth your self-esteem.

    5. Teacher - Love to communicate richness of experience.

    6. Poet - Finds beauty in life and tries to express soul insights in symbolic language.

    7. Lover - Passion and devotion to someone or something. (Um, Amazon? lol)

    8. Goddess - Nature, life force, etc. This can also manifest itself in extreme self-indulgence. Caroline also shows the "shadow" versions of each Archetype.

    9. Healer - Transforming pain into healing.

    10. Damsel - Explores the possibility of succeeding without a knight and looking at romance in a healthy way.

    11. Angel - A desire to help those in need.

    12. Artist - Seeing life symbolically. Expressing a dimension of life that is beyond the five senses.

After using this card deck to understand my light/dark qualities I can now try to avoid the negative aspects by emphasizing the positive traits. This all makes sense even if you didn't make a sacred contract before arriving on the planet.

If you study these cards, you will find yourself analyzing people. Yep, Virgo, that is what we do. I recently told someone not to be such an energy vampire. Although, maybe that is my own inner Vampire making me aware that someone is draining my life force. That was one of the cards I took out of the pack at the start.

If you are looking for a companion to the cards: Caroline Myss' Journal of Inner Dialogue will impress you.

Caroline has been a part of my "birthing of the self" in a big way and I think she has some interesting items that are healing and entertaining.

Once you find your Archetypes, you can make notes in your journal and really start to understand who you are and why you are walking this earth.

The editorial description, and the box containing these cards, seem to indicate that they may be used indpendently of Ms. Myss' other works... that there are instructions for using "...the cards to help determine which Archetypes are most active in your psyche, and how they can lead you to achieve greater insights into your life."

I did not find that to be the case.

The tiny booklet included with the cards contains detailed descriptions of the archetypes that are written on the cards themselves. The book advised the user to review IT (and not the cards) to determine the 12 archetypes most active in one's psyche. But neither the book, nor the cards, provide any information on how this knowledge will lead the user to any additional insights.

For instance, in Ms. Myss' book "Sacred Contracts" there are references to using one's 12 personal archetypes to create a natal wheel or chart, to see which archetype most influences one of 12 specific areas of one's life - thus leading to increased knowledge of how one should address issues in that area of life.

Apparently there are also instructions in Ms. Myss' book(s) about using the cards to do "spreads" on the "12 Houses" chart to observe how one's archetypes influence a specific current situation.

The publishers have a NEW set of cards coming out, which seems to includes the "12 Houses" chart and instructions - it is called "Sacred Contracts: The Journey" and if you are looking for a set of cards to guide you in personal introspection, or with which to do "readings", I believe you would be better advised to purchase that.

If you already own Ms. Myss' books and are comfortable with the information presented on archetypes, and are looking for a set of cards with which do do the "spreads" she describes, then these cards are EXCELLENT. They are beautifully illustrated, and the concise light/dark attribute information presented on each will surely be enough information for that use. They are a bit large to be shuffled comfortably, but they seem very durable.

But as a stand-alone product, I was very disappointed. ... I wrote to the publisher asking about the use of this set of cards, since the little booklet included gives NO mention of using them at all, and was told, "The way the cards work is you're basically supposed to read through them and see which one applies to you."

As there is hardly ANY information on the cards themselves, and more in the tiny booklet (which should cost less than five dollars), I'd advise you not to waste your money on this set for stand-alone use, and look to one of Ms. Myss' books, or the newer set of cards, or a combination of a book AND this set of cards, as better tools.

I do not feel that this deck can be used alone for any "insight" or practical application. I do not own Ms. Myss' other books, but was able to glean enough information from her own website ( ) and from "seeing inside" the books here at Amazon to note that there would seem to be something missing, application-wise, from this deck.

You will note that other reviewers made up their own ways of doing readings or interpreting the cards, and if that suits your purpose, fine; but these cards do not seem to fulfill Ms. Myss' purpose of helping users to determine their personal archetypes to increase their knowledge of themselves - UNLESS you own her other works, in which case they are neat, which is why I gave them three stars. As a stand-alone product I would have rated them with one.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Deck
My interest in archetypes and how they are presented in tarot decks is what drew me to this particular deck. I wanted to work with something that dealt with pure archetypal energies and so was quit drawn to give Myss's cards a try.

At first I was a little put off by the abundance of red coloring and also the cover picture is not the best the deck has to offer. I read a review here though and the reviewer mentioned the very items I was concerned with but also had many wonderful things to say about this deck.

The cards are sturdy and durable, the colors vibrant and alive. The artwork and symbolism reflects beautifully the energy of each of the cards titles. The Light (positive and helpful) and Shadow (negative, problematic, challenging) notations on the cards give a rich spectrum of meaning to the archetypical energy they describe.

This deck is a wonderful tool for self-awareness and development. Spending some time and reflection on each card, is a great way to let those parts of you that wish to be acknowledged and heard come to the forefront. If there are particular aspects of yourself you'd like to develop, or make stronger, working with this deck can aide in that endeavor.

A simple reading you might like in using these cards follows:

The Problem or Challenge Solver: When you have a particular small "now" problem that you'd like insight into, here is a very simple three-card spread.

Draw three cards at random and lay them out in a row left to right.

Card 1 represents the problem or the energy that is fueling the problem.
Card 2 represents the way through the problem and the energy that
    can guide and support you.
Card 3 represents the probable outcome or where this can possibly go if the energies are fully supported and encouraged

There are several situations when this reading is appropriate.
    Some of them are:
1.When you feel like "something" is amiss in a situation, but you can't put your finger on it.

2.You think you know what the problem is but it is something else entirely.
3.It can confirm for you what the problem area is when you already had some idea to begin with.

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable ... profound!
Whether you are a counselor, therapist, psychic, or are exploring your own interior landscape, these cards will help you move past superficial analyses and solutions to the core!

Inspired by Carl Jung's psychologically rich concept of archetypes and the collective unconscious, this deck describes the positive and negative characteristics of 80 elements of the psyche which transcend culture and time, which are, in a word, universal.

Just thumbing through the cards filled me with goosebumps as Ms. Myss showed me positive or negative characteristics of elements of my own nature that I hadn't recognized till now ... elements that I have been struggling with as negative, or depending on as positive, without seeing the opposite side and allowing them to operate three dimensionally in my life.

These cards can easily be used for formal readings, as with the Tarot, or by simply pulling a card to see what archetype is working in a particular situation ... they are as surprising and inspiring and downright useful as the Creative Whack Pack, and as easy to use, because all the information you need is right there on the card!

If you want to hone your abilities to reach profound psychological depths, go straight to the shopping cart button ... do not pass go ... do not collect $200!

5-0 out of 5 stars Another Use for These Cards
I use them for creative writing. They're perfect for short stories or screenwriting. Shuffle the deck and then pick 2, 3, or 4 archetypes and you have the basis for your characters! For example, the "Vampire" archetype could be a lawyer, a lover, or even a literal vampire.

You can put them into a setting, scene or conflict, or just freewrite and see where they take you. This is exactly the kind of writing tool I've been looking for. I tried using tarot cards but with 74 "characters" (versus the 22 Major Arcana of the tarot), there's a lot of possibilities. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This tape series is THE definitive Carolyn Myss
I listen to a lot of personal growth tapes. My orientation is to listen for material to apply to my life. I don't like vague theories. I began using Carolyn's ideas immediately and have found that they are changing my life. A key point she makes is that you don't have to take 20 years to heal from a trauma. You can "call your spirit back" from past painful events and disappointments. This very simple notion, when applied during meditation, can transform your life. Try it. As they say on TV "It really, really works!"

5-0 out of 5 stars Energy Anatomy: The Science of Personal Power, Spirituality
This is an extremely powerful tape set. It has the power to help change your life for the better. Carolyn Myss has a way of explaning the relation of the chakras to our everyday lives in such a way that everyone can understand. She explains in detail how our energy and that of the people around us affects every aspect of our life, from our health to our country's health to our planet's health. Dr. Myss relates past and recent events to the health of nations. She explains the Great depression and Polio, Aids, Cancer and other ailments. She offers help to fight these diseases. Her message very clear and easy to understand. This tape is a definite must for anyone who wants to improve their life spiritually, physically and emotionally. Wonderful, completely captivating. Carolyn Myss is a great teacher.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gritty style, hard hitting content--it works.
In university I studied engineering. I like to explore many things but at the end the day, especially when it comes to self help, I'm looking for things that work. These CDs from Caroline Myss are working for me.

Here's what I found very unique about Caroline's material: she makes many concepts, such as Chakras, accessible for me. Up to know I've seen them as "could be interesting but seems like new age babble." From what Caroline says in the CDs, that's how she saw all of this stuff too, until some things happened in her life and she ended up with a new point of view. Key point here: she isn't a woo-woo "stars and magic" person. She's blunt and practical. At one point she says something like this "I want to give you the science of Chakras...I like explaining these things like machines, so you see that this is real, not just made up stuff." By bringing this into practical, almost scientific terms, it's accessible to me. On tape 6, some of what she talks about was a bit out there for me, but hey, that's alright. The core of the content is very practical and can be experienced day to day.

Caroline has interesting things to say about spirituality and religion as well. She comes off as a very spiritual person, but there didn't seem to be a given religion behind that. Interesting.

Several people have commented on Caroline's style. Here's my take. Caroline is blunt and direct. She isn't warm and fuzzy. She *is* funny. She *is* a great speaker. She *is* very bright and good at quickly building to "the point." She isn't nurturing. I'm at a point where I'm really ready to take action, and ready to make some changes. I was taken aback a few times through the CDs, but that's OK. I'm ready to take some emotional bruises in order to move forward. I think it's worth it. I'm tired of finishing interesting self-help books, putting them down, and then finding that nothing in my life is different. I'm seeing lots of changes already from the way that Caroline's CDs are challenging me.

I've also seen some comments that Caroline seems overly confident in herself. I can see where that impression may come from. Here's the thing--I don't see her strength and confidence coming out of pride or need for recognition. I think it comes from having a very solid basis in what she says, and also in being very aligned in her work as a teacher. She has important information to get across. Is everything she says 100% right? Who knows? You will get an undiluted point of view on how things work though.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly Profound. Myss's best work
I have read a lot of spiritual material, and this one has had a continued and lasting impact on me. It has helped to give me an understanding of my chakras and how I relate to the world that fits completely with other spiritual material. This material made so much sence.

I am a healthy person, so Myss's books on healing have never interisted me. This material, however, taught me how to guage my own personal power and understand why I'm weak and why I'm strong. Ever since going through these tapes I have been continually physically aware of my chakras. I can feel when I am working on something that is affecting one of them, and I am aware when I am leaking a significant amount of energy from one (which is pretty much every day, but I'm aware now).

Myss has a system where people can become certified as instructors of her material. I took a local weekly class on this series and it really expanded the material, I recommend it if you can find something like that in your area. Also, once you have used this material to understand where you are leaking energy and why, you can use Byron Katie's 'The Work' to help disconnect from what you are tied into.

3-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Energy is better
By happenstance, I listened to the Advanced Energy series before I listened to Energy Anatomy. I found Myss's presentation and material far better on the Advanced series. So much so that I had to force myself to listen all the way through the Energy series. I had to keep reminding myself that I agreed with what she was saying. It made sense to me. I had to focus on the message and not the tone. When I listened to Advanced Energy, I couldn't wait to hear the next tape and was disappointed when I finished the last. I wish I hadn't bought Energy Anatomy but had borrowed it from the library instead. Clearly, I highly recommend Advanced Energy. ... Read more

    Book Description

New York Times bestselling author and medical intuitive Caroline Myss has found that when people don’t understand their purpose in life the result can be depression, anxiety, fatigue, and eventually physical illness—in short, a spiritual malaise of epidemic proportions. Myss’s experience of working with people led her to develop an insightful and ingenious process for deciphering your own Sacred Contract—or higher purpose—using a new theory of archetypes that builds on the works of Jung, Plato, and many other contemporary thinkers.

Myss examines the lives of the spiritual masters and prophets—Abraham, Jesus, Buddha, and Muhammad—whose archetypal journeys illustrate the four stages of a Sacred Contract and provide clues for discovering your own. Myss explains how you can identify your particular spiritual energies, or archetypes—the gatekeepers of your higher purpose—and use them to help you find out what you are here on earth to learn and whom you are meant to meet. Exploring your Sacred Contract will shine a light on the purpose and meaning of your life. You are meant to do certain tasks, you are meant to have certain relationships.

In coming to know your archetypal companions, you also begin to see how to live your life in ways that make the best use of your personal power and lead you to fulfill your greatest—in fact, your divine—potential.

Both visionary and practical, Sacred Contracts is a bold, powerful work of spiritual wisdom. Without a doubt, your most intriguing challenge in life is to recognize your spiritual commitments and live them to the fullest.

5-0 out of 5 stars Multiple Mirrors to See Your Soul and Its Commitments!
Sacred Contracts engages you in an extensive, self-exploring expedition to unearth the core ingredients of your unique, spiritual identity. Because there are so many assignments to do in the book and it is so detailed, I suggest you get the hardcover version rather than one of the audio versions.

Of all the many books I have read about finding and following the dictates of your own true self, Sacred Contracts is by far the most unusual and detailed. The author calls upon major religious traditions, Eastern ideas about energy centers in the body, Jungian psychological archetypes, and astrology among other sources as context for seeing yourself as unique. Although few of these references are ones that I relate to very often, I was impressed by the way that they centered my focus by helping me see what life roles are not important in my life, as the contrast for seeing what is important. In my past experience with increasing self-understanding, the focus was on what was important. Cutting away the unimportant makes those important areas stand out much more clearly.

This is a book that can help you learn for the rest of your life. Unlike many books that are aimed at helping you find "the answer" and then getting you off working with "the answer," Sacred Contracts is designed to help with new challenges and issues in the future . . . as well as the ones you have today.

I found myself particularly enriched by reviewing the very long list of potential archetypes that are developed in the book. These are explained by stories of individuals, references to popular books and movies, and examples of how one archetype differs from other, similar ones. As a result, the archetypes and my own reactions to them came into much clearer focus in my mind. When I had read about these in Joseph Campbell's work, I often found them to be distant. Here, they are immediate.

Sacred Contracts focuses on "what is our mission in life?" This includes both "where am I going?" and "who will go with me?" The answer is unique for each person to each of these questions. A sacred contract is "your overall relationship to your personal . . . and spiritual power." The contract is "a plan to help you develop your divine potential." This is to fulfill "an agreement your soul makes before you are born." As I read these concepts, I found them to be most closely identified in my mind with the beliefs of Buddhism as they relate to the reincarnated soul. The author takes care to show that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam also contain these points of view.

The book contains a lot of material to help you absorb the context of these perspectives. In that sense, I felt a little like I was reading a condensed version of The Golden Bough.

After you understand the archetypes and their manifestations, you are directed how to engage in an extensive mental dialogue with and write about the positive and negative forms of each important archetype for you. These will include the four universal ones (child, victim, compromised person, and saboteur) as well as your selection from dozens of others for the ones that seem most important to you (such as addict, angel, bully, gambler, Midas, poet, and thief). For example, you will ask, "Why did I choose this archetype?" "In what way do I feel the archetype serves my Contracts with other people?"

The focus of all this remains on keeping "your attention on reaching your highest potential." To do this, you must "surrender to self."

Most people will find the list of what to think about and the exercises to do to be a bit intimidating. I certainly did. The work is based on a successful seminar that the author has been developing over many years. So it is intended to take quite a bit of time to do and implement. I suggest that you find blocks of time of at least two hours in length to work on these assignments when you will not be disturbed. If you are single, you might go someplace where you can be alone but see the splendor of nature. If you live with your family, early morning or late at night would probably be the best time . . . while others are at rest. Naturally, if you like what you read here, you could also consider doing a seminar with the author. I'm assuming that that is much more expensive than working with this book on your own. Some people might find it helpful to find someone to do this with, so that you share your results with one another. This could help provide the discipline to keep working on discovering your sacred contracts.

May you fulfill your highest purpose in ways that bring great joy and benefit to you and all whom you meet! God bless you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sacred Contracts is a brilliant!
Sacred Contracts is a brilliant synthesis of spiritual insight and psychology. Presumably based on the author's well known workshops of the same name. Sacred Contracts takes Jung's concept of archetypes beyond anything Jung himself might have imagined and brings the notion squarely into the 21st century.
The author developed an enjoyable and ingenious process for deciphering your own Contract using a new theory of archetypes that builds on the works of Jung, Plato, and contemporary thinkers. This book is genuinely transformative in understanding the why and what of your inner self.

I bought the audio version after reading the written version. Really use both. When I work I use Neurosync behavior modification software to make other improvements. I enjoy self improvement and self enlightenment and I highly recommend both the book and audio versions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling at home with yourself.
I found Caroline Myss' "SACRED CONTRACTS" to be a warm and insightful guide to investigating one's purpose in life. Myss writes with a great generosity of heart. She describes her book as "a product of my wanting to share with people my insights about our individual and collective life purpose over nearly two decades of working with the energies of the human spirit." Myss explores the idea of archetypes, or energies, that are aspects of our personalities intricately involved in the fulfilling of our purposes.

The book functions as a guide to help you identify the key archetypes in your life, so that rather than getting lost in the drama of your life, you can step back and experience yourself as more centered in the big picture. The tone is light and often playful, and Myss sprinkles her discussions with many gems, such as: "real creativity is based on a solid foundation of knowledge and discipline." Her chapter on the "Wizard of Oz" as a symbol of personal transformation is moving and mesmerizing. I had never considered the difference Dorothy made to the lives of the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion before I read this chapter. Myss repeatedly underlines the importance of living in the moment: "Fulfilling your highest potential actually means acting on your highest or deepest truth each moment of your life." As an excellent companion book on your road to personal growth, I strongly recommend "WORKING ON YOURSELF DOESN'T WORK" by Ariel and Shya Kane. (Their audio CD's and tapes are brilliant as well.) This simple and practical book is an indispensable guide to living fully in the moment and discovering joy and satisfaction with a consistency beyond your wildest imagination.

1-0 out of 5 stars dizzying
I have been on a spiritual path for 20 years, and agree that a certain amount of self-discovery is necessary. However, this convoluted, complicated book encourages a level of introspection that can not be healthy. I can't imagine anyone taking this book seriously as coming away anything but self-absorbed, with no real interest in other people, as they have found themselves so archetypically interesting.
A great investment for true narcissists!

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Altering
This is the first book I have ever read that even comes close to explaining what I believe the afterlife to be, or rather the beginning of life on earth. Except for a few minor differences this is right on. Have you ever heard things that you know the meaning of the words, but until someone enlightens you the meaning of the words is missed. This book turned on the light in my head about sooooo many things, that it is hard to believe. Enlightenment comes in slow subsets, and this book has connected many subsets for me. ... Read more

    Book Description

For more than fifteen years, Caroline Myss has studied why some people heal, while others do not. In her previous book, Anatomy of the Spirit, Dr. Myss illuminated the hidden interactions of belief and body, soul and cell to show how, as she inimitably puts it, "your biography becomes your biology." In this new book, she builds on her earlier teachings of the seven different energy centers of the body to provide a vital self-healing program for physical and spiritual disorders. With her characteristic no-nonsense style and high-voltage storytelling, she exposes and explodes the five myths about healing, explains the cultural and individual contexts in which people become physically and spiritually ill and invested in "woundology," and teaches new methods of working with the challenges that the seven energy centers embody.

Both visionary and practical, Why People Don't Heal and How They Can presents a bold new account of the development of human consciousness and spirituality over the ages, and examines the dynamic global transformation of attitudes about healing. To help you get and stay on the path to wellness, Dr. Myss provides rituals and prayers for gaining a symbolic perspective on your life issues; for bolstering your personal power; and for connecting with a universal divine energy. Dr. Myss's breakthrough views on energy medicine and her active approach to healing life issues and physical illness will help you overcome the mental blocks that keep you from becoming well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Power sources: spiritual, emotional, physical, etc.
Be sure to read the introduction! Myss parallels the symbolism of the sacraments of the Christian church, the Tree of Life of the Kabbalistic tradition and the Hindu chakras. The Tribal, Individual and Symbolic ages are explained. The archetypes, made widely known to us by Jung, are uplifted as a way to see the events of our lives in symbolic terms. The 3-page Epilogue "Snow White and the Seven Chakras" might be read first as another introduction to the scope of the messages of this book, then re-read as a review. Many personal stores are recounted, including Myss' own healing experience, as examples of the principles cited. This book is uplifting and informative. It ties together things we have read in many other books into a helpful whole.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a great book for healers
I am a Chi Gung master and a Shaman with over 30 years experience in esoteric healing and energy work and I spend most of my time working with and healing plants, animals, and people around the clock and as an intuitive healer myself, I recognize Caroline's skill and methods as very beneficial for any healer. I highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to gain a deeper insight into who they are and how the healing process can work.

5-0 out of 5 stars Self Identification is the only way...
There has been millions of research to justify everything Caroline teaches. She's not critizing the wounded and neither is she arrogant. Facts are facts, and she delivers the facts in a way that people who are not serious about making some changes will easily get affended, because that's the easy thing to do other than looking at themself and saying, "Hey, I brought this on myself. And I could fix it myself." Carolyn is terrific! But if you are not serious about self improvement, don't bother.

2-0 out of 5 stars She is not a healer
Mind/body/spirit authors and healers are often accused of "blaming the victim." Good spiritual and mind/body healers do no such thing, but some do imply that if you're sick, it's your fault. And if you don't get better, it's because you don't want to, or don't try hard enough.

Caroline Myss doesn't just imply that illness is our fault, she wrote this whole book to tell us so. By downplaying or ignoring the social, economic, genetic, and environmental determinants of health, she turns what should be a hopeful message of empowerment into a club of guilt and blame.

Of course, our own behavior and attitudes play a large role in health. And yes, illness does bring some advantages that some people cling to. But people have good reasons for adopting the behaviors and attitudes they do. We adopted those behaviors before we knew better, because they seemed necessary at the time. And we maintain them because our lives are set up to maintain them.

Change is hard, especially if you don't believe you can do it, or that your life is not worth the effort. People need hope, support, and belief in themselves if they are to change. So when people need to change, to improve their health or their lives, you don't want to start by making them feel bad about themselves. That's why this book, far from helping people heal, is likely to add another layer of suffering to their lives.

My book, The Art of Getting Well, was partly written in response to Why People Don't Heal. (I have been called "the anti-Caroline Myss.") My book explains that illness is not our fault, but it is our responsibility to do the best we can to maximize our health and our lives.

It's often the conditions of our lives that make us sick, and many times the key to getting better is improving our quality of life. One element in this improvement is learning to value, love and forgive ourselves and our bodies. Myss takes the opposite approach; she blames. She is not a healer.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Completely Useless, But ...
We all know people with legitimate illnesses who seem to wallow in their misfortune. However, we all suffer from illnesses, and we all age -- some of us dwell on our ailments, others are stoic to the point of self-neglect. The author is obviously a charlatan, who has positioned herself as the Camille Paglia of New Age Healers.

As others have pointed out,she has no credentials, and isn't even a healer -- she is a professional busy body, telling others where to get off, and it is sad that people have actually gone to her in their desperation. There are plenty of New Age healers who aren't charlatans, who have a genuine gift of love and will to help others.

She basically says that some people need their illnesses for attention or whatever, and that others experience spiritual growth through their physical travails. None of this is exactly news. I just worry that people who come down with cancer or whatever will think it's their own fault if they don't heal, as she seems to think.

This book isn't really a waste of time -- but it is mean spirited, reduces a complex topic to a formula, and is completely lacking in a spiritual element. Which is ironic, because she is preaching spirituality. Scary. ... Read more

Now, this bestselling author and medical intuitive reveals a bold all-new program for excavating the deep unconscious forces that block the flow of energy through your life - Advanced Energy Anatomy.

In her previous work, Dr. Myss lifted the curtain on the human energy system and the connections between past events and your present health. But about your future? This series is even better then the first Energy Anatomy Program.
It covers the archetypes and how they relate to our way of living. It will awaken your soul to realize alot you didn't know about yourself. Once you understand the Chakra system and archetypes, which Caroline explains, you will begin reviewing your life and see where you need to make adjustments to live a fuller life. I highly recommend this series. Caroline Myss is Brilliant and a woman who is obviously on a mission to help awaken society to the endless possiblilies and power we hold within ourselves. Our power is immeasurable. It's our responsibility to go claim it.
    God Bless You

5-0 out of 5 stars Advanced Energy Anatomy - best yet!
Having heard all of Caroline's audio books, this is the best material yet. Extremely well put together in terms of logical flow from one topic to the next, and good examples and case histories to illustrate her points. Caroline covers the meaning of Archetypes and their impact on our lives from an energetic standpoint. This is the best description of Archetypes that I have come across so far. She makes it easy to recognize these Archetypes at work in ourselves and in others. Among other things, she covers the significant differences between a job, a career and a vocation, and the spiritual energies that push us towards expanding our awareness of why we are here. Listen to this tape series more than once. There is lots of information here. Highly recommended! - Mark Greenia, author of "Energy Dynamics: Conscious Human Evolution."

2-0 out of 5 stars Condescending
I listened to the first Energy Anatomy set and loved it, so I bought the Advanced set. I was disappointed. There is less actual material, more pontificating. Fewer real life stories, more bold, brazen and mostly unusable assertions. Above all there is far less charm, humility, humor and humanity. Myss must have a clientele of new-age noodle heads who enjoy being berated. Or maybe she's just sick of her audience. But she says a lot of things like "you have no idea what the consequences of any action will be, and your foolish to think you do". Well, if that were true, getting from your bathroom to your car in the morning would be impossible, right? She says "you have absolutely no idea how much you've been influenced by the social mind." Well, actually I've given this quite a bit of thought, Carolyn, but then you wouldn't know that because YOU HAVE ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA who I am.

Also, content-wise, I don't find this to be about "advanced energy anatomy" at all, but about archetypes, which is a bit of a different subject. Pass on this title and listen to her previous work, before fame made her arrogant.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic, life changing and insightful
Caroline's wisdom is remarkably shared with examples that I can understand and encompass. This is not my first Caroline Myss tape, but it has helped me more than I can write. I'm from a family of "victim" archetypes and I have a tendency to overspend when I'm letting my "child" archetype have control of my thoughts. Caroline's tapes have helped me make positive changes in my life that I would have taken years to even comprehend before these tapes. Buy the CD version because you will want to listen to the lessons over and over.

    Book Description

Almost 20 years ago, a Harvard-trained neurosurgeon and researcher named Norman Shealy was introduced to a young woman with a special gift: she could "see" illness in other people with only her intuition to guide her. After extensive testing, Dr. Shealy concluded that her ability to diagnose illness – even from remote distances – was 93% accurate. Today that "medical intuitive" – Caroline Myss – is a legend in the field of intuition and energy healing, with three New York Times bestsellers to her credit, including her current blockbuster Sacred Contracts.

Now, in a major publishing event, these two pioneering voices are together again in a revolutionary self-care curriculum, on The Science of Medical Intuition.

First presented by Myss and Shealy at a series of influential workshops, The Science of Medical Intuition is designed to help listeners take control of their total health, through intuitive self-diagnosis and healing techniques. Complete on 12 enriching sessions – over 18 hours of learning – and enhanced by a large format workbook developed exclusively for this course, The Science of Medical Intuition covers every phase of Myss’ and Shealy’s groundbreaking approach to self-care including: The history of medical intuition • Intuition self-training • Chakra-by-chakra self-diagnosis • Healing with imagery • Surprising scientific evidence from medicine and physics • Past lives and present health • Decoding archetypal information, and much more. At last, here is a full toolbox of self-diagnostic practices, visualizations, and healing insights, taught by Myss and Shealy in their own words, on The Science of Medical Intuition. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An enriching and rewarding self-teaching guide
The collaborative effort of Caroline Myss and Dr. Norm Shealy, The Science Of Medical Intuition: Self-diagnosis And Healing With Your Body's Energy Systems is an impressive and "user friendly" collection of twelve 60 minute lessons on audio compact discs that guide the listener in the process of approaching self-care and improved health through developing personal intuition. Inducting the reader into learning about chakras, creative visualization, guided imagery, the power of thought, and much, much more, The Science Of Medical Intuition is an enriching and rewarding self-teaching guide to extending personal awareness into scientific and metaphysical realms alike. The Science Of Medical Intuition would make a welcome and highly prized addition to dedicated Alternative Medicine and Metaphysical Studies collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Worth getting if you relate to Caroline Myss.
This is the most involved CD and Workbook set from Caroline that I have ever had the pleasure of owning. It is a very detailed tool box, and one that will provide hours of opportunity for self-reflection and awareness. Caroline Myss and Norman Shealy (MD) speak on the CD's. Dr Norm Shealy has some fascinating medical details concerning the visualisations contained within this series and their effect on raising the levels of Calcitonin and DHEA (as well as some other hormones) for example.
It is not a series that aims to teach you how to become a medical intuitive to read other people's energy. Rather, it aims to teach you to be more perceptive and intuitive about your own physical, mental and spiritual/energetic body.
It has some good Visualisations within it, that last ~ 30 mins each. The Ring of Fire, Earth, Air, Water and Crystal are great.
Interestingly, the Ring of Crystal Visualisation seems to go along almost the exact same points of focus in the body as I learnt through Healing Touch in a treatment known as the CHAKRA CONNECTION. This technique is acknowledged by Janet Mentgen founder of the Healing Touch program to have been learnt from the renowned Dr W.Brugh Joy (Author of "Joy's Way"). I have found the CHAKRA CONNECTION to have powerful and beneficial effects, both for people I work with and when done on myself. Although I have only done the Ring of Crystal visualisation a few times now, you can feel the points Norm Shealy focuses on to really be connecting.
I can recommend this series to those interested in energetic medicine and healing, and for those who have enjoyed previous Caroline Myss CD's. This Series can help empower everybody who chooses to use the tools given within it. For those with or without a medical background, the visualisations are clearly explained and diagrams given in the extensive 92 page workbook.
I think I will be re-listening to (as with all Caroline's CD's, because each time you listen to it you hear different gems of wisdom) and benefiting from this series on The Science of Medical Intuition for many years to come. ... Read more

Who can help asking "Why?" when they develop a disease? According to theologian and "medical intuitive" Caroline Myss, Ph.D., and co-worker C. Norman Shealy, M.D., who is a physician, neurosurgeon, and expert on pain and stress management, the answer goes further than a medical explanation. The Creation of Health explores the emotional, physical, and spiritual patterns that form health and the stresses that can cause disease.

Myss identifies eight dysfunctional patterns that lead to illness. Being aware that "negative attitudes create negative responses within the physical body" allows you to make changes toward health after identifying your emotional, psychological, and spiritual stresses. The most interesting chapters discuss specific diseases in terms of lifestyle factors, stress, and psychological patterns and energy factors, with case studies. A heart attack, for example, is "an explosion of energy attempting to break down an emotional barrier ... caused by warehousing fears and anger," says Myss. The authors alternate, rather than co-write, chapters and topics, so you know whose perspective you're reading. The theoretical sections are not easy reading, but the insights you can apply to your own health make the work immensely worthwhile. --Joan Price ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hmmm...
I was skeptical of this book at first but immediately was drawn into the teachings from two differently disciplined people with one theory. What makes the book seem more credible to me was that Shealy is a medical doctor interested in holistic teaching, while Myss studied spirituality and holistic teaching and applies it to the medical field. More than anything, I saw this book as a great stepping stone to where the medical sciences are bound to go in the coming of our "New" age.I think eventually this book and the ideas presented in it need to be taken (and will be taken)into serious consideration by the medical field, as the examples used were believable and things I have seen myself.

The only reason I was short on the stars is because the amount of errors in this edition drove me batty. Sorry, but I prefer not to have to stumble upon typos by a publication while reading!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting? Yes. Believable? Maybe.
While Myss and Shealy's book is interesting and thought provoking in that it introduces novel information regarding the mind-body connection, it lacks the scientific support that would make it entirely believable. Though the book's credibility is enhanced by the fact that Shealy is a medical doctor, there are far too many statements throughout that leave the reader wondering where the information came from and if it is backed by any research studies. Many valid points and theories are presented, however, they tend to be mixed in with very subjective and unsupported material. I would suggest that this book be used as a basic guideline for the current discourse about the connection between emotional, spiritual, and physical health, but that any information be further researched by consulting scholarly works in order to ensure its legitimacy.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Holistic" is Not a Technique
Myss and Shealy make clear that we are at a turning point in the diagnosis and understanding of disease. The trend in medicine to examine the influences of stress has retintroduced us to the knowledge that emotional tension is disruptive to the physical body. "...this recognition that human emotions do indeed affect physical health," they write, "has brought the traditional medical world face to face with the fundamental principle of holistic health: The majority of physical illnesses result from an overload of emotional, psychological and spiritual crises."

They outline eight dysfunctional stress patterns:

    - Unresolved or deeply consuming emotional, psychological, or spiritual stress. - Negative (and disempowering) belief patterns. - Inability to give and/or receive love. - Lack of humor/inability to distinguish serious concerns from life's lesser issues. - Failure to exercise the power of choice in the matters of one's own life. - Lack of attention to the needs of the physical body. - Absence or loss of meaning in one's life. - Inability to face life's challenges and to acknowledge and change what is not working.

The term "Holistic" refers to a way of approaching healing that incorporates a variety of therapies including traditional medicine. "Metaphorically speaking, traditional medicine represents the 'mind' of health care and the holistic approach represents the 'heart' of health care." This book is an important guideline for approaching the heart of health care -- a useful frame of reference to examine how our lives contribute to illness or wholeness, particularly those who have already become ill, their families, and their caregivers.

1-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars For The Artwork, 1 Star For Content
Healing Cards is a beautifully illustrated 50 card deck. The size of the cards are 5.5 inches long and 3.5 inches wide--the exact same size as the Archetype Cards by Myss. Artist Janice Fried illustrated both decks, as well; in fact, I couldn't help but wonder when looking at the Healing Cards if some of the images were originally intended for the Archetype deck. The image from one of the Healing Cards is the exact same one that's on the front of the newer version of Myss' Journal Of Inner Dialogue.

According to the authors, these healing cards and accompanying booklet will help you create a daily practice that not only heals existing ailments, but also maintains spiritual balance in your life. Healing Cards offer both inspiration and a course of action and (according to them) a card a day keeps the doctor away!

Cute marketing...but does the deck live up to its claim?

I felt that the best way to review this deck would be to use it during times where I was in a position to receive healing--when I was dealing with sinus problems, fatigue, and bouts of IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome). So I used this deck over a period of months for those times of stillness where I welcomed Guidance concerning dis-ease.

Each time I sought insight, as well as comfort, I'd say a prayer, shuffle the deck, and draw a card. While a few of the cards contained quiet wisdom and inspiration, I didn't feel that they spoke to me on a deep level. At other times, the cards seemed almost accusatory. For example, one card says The root cause of all disease is a negative attitude about taking care of yourself. The booklet expands on this card saying "The Ayurvedic tradition of India teaches that the main reason we get sick can be reduced to a lazy or perverse mental attitude, which leads us to ignore the basic principles of good health...". Yet another card says All suffering stems from ignorance, hatred, or craving; the wisdom connected with this card says "...Passionate craving for material or sensual satisfaction inevitably leads to frustration and disappointment, which in turn leads to stress and illness."

However, other cards convey messages contradictory to the "it's your fault" message. For example, Illness is not a punishment, but a stimulation to life. The wisdom in the booklet corresponding with this card says "A large part of the suffering that accompanies any illness derives from the psychologically imposed belief that it represents a judgment. Some may believe it's a judgment from God, a punishment for bad deeds committed in this life or previous lifetimes, or even an unconscious choice we've made. None of those reasons has any more validity than saying a wild deer is responsible for developing a cancerous tumor...But looking on it [illness] as a punishment is counterproductive, since the implicit guilt can only create more stress." Then it goes on to talk about Friedrich Nietzsche and his idea of seeing illness as a great stimulant to life and how this is a far more empowering way to look at dis-ease: "In this case, his thoughts offer a far more wholesome understanding of illness than that of many traditional and New Age thinkers."

    Indeed. I couldn't agree more.

I see this dichotomy among many New Age teachers: the idea that we're responsible for our own sickness and that we created it. Yet, in the next breath, we're admonished not to feel guilt about it because we may not be responsible for it after all. And then we're given a neat little ABC package of formulas designed to eradicate dis-ease and be perfectly healthy 100% of the time.

I'm reminded of this portion of the New Testament: "As he went along, he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?' 'Neither this man nor his parents sinned,' said Jesus, 'but this happened so that the work of God might be displayed in his life.'" (John 9:1-3).

The wisdom shared in the booklet spans many religious traditions: Buddhism, Native American, Shamanism, Judaism, Christianity, Ayurveda, Islam and so on. Yet, I felt like it was more an intellectual lesson in comparative religion rather than a deck constructed to foster healing. I've had better insight into healing and health with The Oracle Tarot by Lucy Cavendish.

5-0 out of 5 stars "Only looking at the cards can bring healing"
Today I bought The Healing Cards. This deck is astounding beautiful. I own other decks like the Louise Hay and Dr. Wayne Dyer; but they are not as beautiful illustrated as this. I was very disappointed as the only credit given to the artist "Janice Fried", is at the back of the case, in very little letters. I found this incredibly odd, as the cards are a beautiful metaphor of the words, only "looking at the cards can bring healing".I don`t know why the publishers did this, It seems someone does not give importance to art as a healing tool. "Janice Fried" images are of a very spiritual nature. With naked innocence, the illustrations transmit the words of Caroline`s essence.
Another thing, this cards are not affirmations cards, they are touchstones cards, they give you an insightful thought and then suggest and action to integrate the thought`s essence in your everyday life. The messages are practical but profound. They are stated with simplicity, but the more you read them, more enlightenment they bring.
As was said in other reviews, it is difficult to find the meaning of the cards in the booklet as the cards are not numbered. But the images and the messages are strong reasons to buy this deck, you can read the booklet as extra information, but not for expanding the cards meaning. I noticed that the booklet really don`t add much information regarding the insights of the messages, the information is about the religious or philosophy tradition that is the source of the messages. You don`t need to read the booklet to use the cards.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the Cards for Inspiration
I have most of the Hay House affirmation card decks. I love them all. The healing cards are some of the most beautifully illustrated.

Don't be so attached to your expectations of what the cards are supposed to be like... just enjoy them for what they offer --- inspiring images, healing words, guidance for compassion and forgiveness for others and your self, exercises towards de-fragmentation and wholeness.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointed
I was very disappointed with my healing cards. They don't have anything to do with the information that Caroline Myss is famous for. I thought they were going to be about blocks in your chakras. I am taking mine back.

I don't quite understand the reviews that are negative. My partner and I pick a card every morning and find them very inspirational. Book Description

In her books and workshops, Caroline Myss urges her followers to look deep inside themselves by answering the many questions she presents for self-exploration. Like archaeologists of the soul, we need to excavate our hidden depths to unearth the shards of the spirit, and then reassemble those fragments into a whole self. Now Caroline’s Journal of Inner Dialogue offers you the perfect tool with which to keep track of the answers to those questions. It allows you to return and examine your original answers, learn from them, and then move on to uncover the next layer of truth.

The journal is conveniently divided into sections devoted to her most popular concepts: Sacred Contracts, Archetypes, and the Chakras. Brief introductions explain each concept and then give you specially prepared forms on which to record information about the people with whom you have contracts; to answer questions to determine your 12 archetypes and to help you learn more about the function of the 7 chakras; and blank Archetypal Wheels on which to cast your charts. This is an expandable journal, which will allow you to add to or modify it in anyway in the future. The journal is the ideal way to work with any of Caroline’s books, tapes, or workshops. ... "All archetypes have "shadow" manifestations as well as positive aspects." ~Caroline Myss

After discovering Caroline Myss and her work in the areas of Self-Esteem, I took an interest in other areas of her research. While Archetypes, Sacred Contracts and Chakras may be foreign territory for many of us, these ideas can be rather enlightening.

I first discovered Chakras while doing a yoga video called "Yoga Zone Flexibility and Stress Release" and was amazed at how healed I was just after imagining colors in various areas of my body.

The "Journal of Inner Dialogue" is divided into three main sections:

    Sacred Contracts

Caroline uses questions to encourage you to examine your inner motivations, strengths, fears, energy blocks and challenges. She believes you made a sacred contract before you were born and this determines what you will learn in your life. While I can't validate this information myself, it is intriguing.

Since this is a journal-style book, you will find plenty of lined sheets for your own writing. You can fill in answers to questions, fill in sacred contract sheets or explore each chakra in depth. The ring binding and cover are of high quality and this book is quite beautiful and has a linen-textured earthy olive green lining and even a pocket on the inner front cover.

If you purchase this item, do consider the Caroline Myss Archetype Cards. I found them to be essential when discovering your archetypes. A book explaining the Archetypes is also included in the box of cards.

I bought a second one and gave it to a friend who's recovering from cancer, and she loves it! It really brought to light to me how I can be in charge of my life, as pulling all my energies into the present, and away from useless wastes of that energy. These CD's are teaching me how to be close with the divine, without all the associated dogma of my Catholic beginnings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Caroline Myss audio collection
Originaly I bought this audio set to use the daily meditations, however I find the other two tapes are the ones I use most often. Onthe meditation tape some of Carolines wording is too harsh for me and so the tape has been very helpful as a guide for me to create my own daily 'program'. I work at a job that allows me to listen to audio tapes (with earphones on) and I use Carolines tapes often. They give me broader insights into daily life and the wacky world of work. Two of Carolines (true) stories always inspire me. They are from the life of David C. Paladin, a man who went through a living hell and was forced to save himself in an amazing way. The other person had his everyday world crumble in one cataclysmic day and found his way into a life he couldn't have dreamed big enough to imagine! END ... Read more

    Book Description

What if you could live your life in partnership with divinity, using intuition as your guide? According to Clarissa Pinkola Estés, Ph.D., and Caroline Myss —such a life is possible. In fact, it has been the life that mystics have chosen throughout history, and only one thing is required: the willingness to completely surrender to divine instruction. Now Caroline Myss and Dr. Estés—two of the country’s leading intuitives and bestselling authors—are together for the first time on audio with Intuition and the Mystical Life, where listeners join them to explore: the difference between instinct and intuition: when to use each of these powerful decision-making tools, spiritual emergencies—using the power of prayer for empowerment, during these initiations into the next level of divine awakening, new ways to face the challenges of life’s cyclical transitions, and much more. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars McIntuition?
I was surprised and unsettled by aspects of listening to Caroline Myss on this CD. Her habit of addressing Dr. Estes as "Clariss" is grating and to this listener borders on condescension. At one point she essentially tells Estes that she is going to get inside her head and walk around and tell her just what makes her tick -- in essence to "become" her. When Estes murmurs some trepidation and gently intimates that turnabout is fair play, Myss swiftly dismisses this and proceeds to blow right by Dr. Estes' boundaries without a second thought. It makes me wince. There is something so presumptuous and disrespectful about assuming that one can "instantly" know another's soul. I'm an intuitive psychotherapist and even when I can make fair hypotheses about the internal machinations of clients (some of whom I've known for years) I maintain a huge margin of respect for the possibility that I may be wrong. Myss, however (as others have noted) does not seem to be constrained by the encumbrance of healthy skepticism when it comes to her own perceptions. Her slick packaging, Oprah-fication and unleashed ego conspire to reduce her message to McIntuition. Not so Dr. Estes, whose living, breathing body of work stands squarely on its own merits and on her rock-solid integrity. This production shines a light on the contrast between the two. My intuition suggests that this may have been what was intended. Earth to Vasalisa: You are in the presence of the great and powerful Baba Yaga. Ask for fire.

2-0 out of 5 stars Calling Dr. Myss' Guardian Angel!
I used to think the world of Caroline Myss. Pinkola Estes and Myss make a wonderful, magical combination. However, Dr. Myss is getting pedantically infatuated with herself, to the point that she has become her own self parody and worst archetype. It is finally becoming clear in her recent presentations that she enjoys ridiculing her audience and that she uses her sharp tongue and mind to belittle our shortcomings and fears. Intuition and the Mystical Life could have been a great edition, but Dr Myss's input did not help Dr. Pinkola Estes' great contribution. I feel sorry for Myss and wish that her guardian angel would rescue her from herself.

3-0 out of 5 stars Mixed reaction
I have greatly enjoyed tapes and stories by Clarissa Estes and this is no exception. It is refreshing to hear her describe more about her process and experiences with the mystical. I'm inspired to be curious, to care more, listen deeper, laugh at my weakneses, appreciate surprises, and hope even when doing so does not make sense except to my heart.

My pleasure in the CD was strangely mixed, because inserted between the humor and wisdom of Dr. Estes comments were the unsettling and uncensored ones of Carolyn Myss. I long ago purchased her set of tapes on "Why People Don't Heal" and swore I would never buy another book or tape like this again. I kept my promise until this CD came out...perhaps finally it captured a more mature Myss to whom I might be able to listen long enough to recognize an intuitive wisdom behind her oration, and if not, at least there could be the usual benefits of Dr. Estes dialogue.

However, I continue to be frustrated with a basic lack of respect shown by Carolyn Myss for the dignity of other human beings, much less their souls, which repeatedly leaks out -- a stream of criticisms and judgments blurted out without any self-reflection and yet called "flashes of objective intuition" which she apparently recognized as such by the lack of any associated feeling content. Now this is a point on which I do definitely agree with her. The lack of feeling is painfully obvious even on a day when I am not carrying a crystal ball next to my laptop.

Sadly, I am initially intrigued by her topics. As I physician I am fascinated with the breadth and depth of what constitutes healing, failures to heal, transformation, and the strange contradictions in persons who are have found a way to experience wellness in the midst of suffering. These mysteries are my teachers. I would be delighted to find new and helpful ideas that stretch me beyond the traditions of my training. But moments behind her intrigue I am disappointed by her treatment of and attitudes about other humans, their wounds and vulnerabilities. Many of these "insights" sound all to familiar, echos of the same tired frustrations and disappointments of sleepless residents, at times including myself, who've been on call for the last 20 or more hours and are now summoned to readmit the same person. The one who has sabotaged again or at least for now their chances at better health with more alcohol, more smoking, more narcotics, more sugar, more salt and water than their heart, liver, kidneys or lungs could handle, skipped their meds...whatever. Its all to easy to figure out how this mess happened because the person did not do enough of some task, did not care about themselves enough, or might find some secondary gain in staying ill.

So while I'm hoping for something that challenges me to search beyond my preconceptions for deeper keys to healing, what I hear is a depreciation of others --"their street trash intuition", their surivival-driven skills (which perhaps she has been so blessed as to never need), a mockery of other women's modesty about mystical experience, and a devaluation of various points of entry at which women may be searching for an opening to find their own intuition.

She's describes being a publisher (perhaps she's been a copy editor as well). Clearly has a gift for lightening fast spontaneous production of highly articulate left-hemisphere speech and logic. Great for analyzing stock options, corporate business plans, cutting to the chase on insurance benefits, and nailing the weakness in one's business or political rivals. On my side she might be a fearsome negotiator -- that is if the other side has not stormed out of the room. I suspect she'd do wonderfully as a prosecuting attorney -- but I am just not sure she'd be able to withhold her own opinions long enough to hear all the evidence and serve as my juror or judge.

Her words are delivered with a firm confidence. Perhaps as flawlessly as Mozart could write his music, no erasures required. Unfortunately, this one form of intuitive expression seems to have limited her definition of the greater process. I would personally have more confidence in her words if I also heard her testing what would disprove her flashes or "opinions" -- in other words hear her keen critical powers directed at the content of her own intuitions much more readily than she directs it at the fabric of others. I wonder if along with all that she "knows" if she knows the difference between: a) self-esteem that survives gently recognizing and holding one's own limitations and weaknesses, and b) a stance or persona clothed in arrogant self-assertions which may be more opinion than intuition.

Something is missing. My guess is that the whole "mandala" of intuition may indeed have a slice in it for celebrating rare oratorical gifts such as Myss displays.

But the whole is broader and deeper. Where does it meet the right hemisphere, the realm of the silence, the ocean of unknowable mysteries that can only been seen through mist, veils and "through a glass darkly". How will it apply a few years from now even if she has a left middle cerebral vascular accident or stroke and can no longer speak and "know that she knows" things so confidently.

I believe that intuition not only addresses the rational, articulate and logial but also encompasses and permeates the nonverbal, the irrational, that which cannot be reduced to speech, the heart, the senses, the timing, the gestalt of sound, space and context and thus knows when and how it is most appropriate to give the unuttered a voice or an image -- sometimes profoundly, sometimes falteringly.

Dr. Estes stories transport me to the gateway for this experience. I feel both respect for her intuition and a curiosity about exploring my own. The cost of the CD was worth hearing her dialogue.

Carolyn's softest moment wraps us in the robes of some breed or creed of a monk -- so that either our souls or our experiences can be camoflauged in a form acceptable enough to Ms Myss that she might pause in her critical thinking long enough to ... well, I'm still not sure quite what that mental device does for her. It did seem to offer a glimmer of relief and protection from her razor sharp mind. Maybe you'll "intuit it" even better than I from her explanation.

Am still wondering what it would take for her to just see another person dressed in the gowns of their own choosing, their own hopes, dreams, fears, wounds, suffering ... and just be present to them -- no changing, no judging, no manipulating the image to fit her agenda. And will she still struggle to continue to see the person even when they are writhing in discomfort, uttering requests she would disapprove, and surrounded in the unpleasant sensory and emotional realities of illness or dying?

If she can perchance use her keen mind and insight to spot a flickering spark of will or hope buried beneath the distortions of pain and anger that would nurture even a slim chance of survival (should that be the soul's desire), a chance to truly motivate some of my patients rather than insult them into reaching with whatever limb still moves toward healing, -- then I'd be ready to listen up, purchase and learn from such a recording. ... In these days of Oprah's "Change Your Life TV," the world is definitely ready for Caroline Myss's brand of spirituality. She reads her book in front of a studio audience as if delivering a weekend lecture at a New Age conference, touching upon such subjects as channeling, mysticism, and stigmata. While often instructional in tone--Myss exhorts listeners to reconsider their relationship with God and chastises them for adopting attitudes of spiritual superiority--she manages to take on the posture of the sternly loving therapist, à la Judd Hirsch or Robin Williams. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute MUST Read for all adults.....
Don't miss this. If you have ever had a discontent thought about anything going on in your life, if you are edgy, unhappy, or lost - read this book (or listen to the tape). You will receive validation that can help you get off your duff and do something worthwhile for yourself.

And if you like this book - you've got to get everything by Carolyn Myss. She is fabulous, funny, practical, and doesn't pull her punches. You can "hear" her as clear as a bell. She'll be your best "book on tape" buddy if you want to change your life!

    Happy Reading.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Changing, Amazingly Insightful
I've just finished listening to the tape set called Spiritual Madness by Caroline Myss. I can do nothing less than to thank God for the amazing insights that she gives. The information is fresh - I haven't heard any of our "spiritual leaders" speak so openly before. This tape set was definitely NOT watered down for the masses. It's an "in your face", honest challenge to get real with your spirituality, and throw the rest away.

Caroline speaks at such a deep level of spirituality, and she says it all so bluntly (which I love - nothing mushy gushy, nothing to make you feel more comfortable). It's fascinatingly refreshing to listen to. Every sentence has a new insight. Every sentence is heavy with meaning and direction for our lives. I've only listened once, but know that I'll have to listen many more times as I continue along my own spiritual path.

Caroline gives us many insights about why we are here, and how we've got so many wrong ideas about what life is really all about, and how we need to improve how we run our lives. She paints a detailed picture of God, and of what to do during our earthly existance. And she gives fascinating real-life examples of true spirituality that support what she says.

It will make you realize that everything you've done in life so far is nothing compared to where you could go in your future, but your future probably has no relation to everything that you've got planned. She cautions us against spiritual superstition, against wanting spiritual power for the wrong reasons, and against thinking that OUR plans for our spirituality can somehow override what God wants for us.

If you haven't hear it yet, I would highly recommend it. But I'm not sure absolutely everybody is ready for it yet.

2-0 out of 5 stars OUCH! Interesting ideas- but ruined by abrasiveness
Every time I listen to Caroline Myss I initially find her ideas intriguing and worthy of close attention. But as each talk progresses her message is usurped by her choice to deliver these ideas in an abrasive, admonishing and arrogant style. After listening to 15 minutes of Caroline you get the impression that just about everyone but her is a silly, irresponsible, phony person who understands little about the truth. She talks as though she were the truth itself and proceeds to deliver us a stern lecture about our shortcomings- like a 3rd grade teacher in a bad mood playing the role of God. Eventually I turn her off because of this unnecessarily alienating energy. Those who admire her for her "tough truth" should listen to someone like the Buddhist teacher Pema Chodron who delivers a truth equally as tough but with love, insightfulness and joy. In the end, it is Caroline who still has much work to do on herself. My hope is that she works through this and changes her style to more genuinuely reflect the joy of the supposed breakthrough that she is trying to share with us. Then I will eagerly listen to the ideas of this obviously deep and intelligent person.

4-0 out of 5 stars "Tough Love" - And Highly Recommended
I listened to this abridged version of the audio cassette (which is why I didn't give it 5 stars - I wanted to hear the entire lecture)and, at times, it made me very uncomfortable. I felt most uneasy when Dr. Myss suggested keeping a journal of all the lies you've told for a month - the little 'white' lies as well as any whoppers. I haven't done it yet because I'm not sure I have the gumption to see all the untruths I speak over 30 days. However, she gives an example of how to be honest without being brutal with someone - and still honor your spiritual contract of honesty with God. So I think I'll try her suggestions and THEN count the times I'm actually untruthful!

In the end, though, this no-nonsense spiritual session actually left me relieved about the way my life is going. By emphasizing that everything you do in your life (no matter how small and humble it seems) is a necessary component of your spiritual path as well as a contribution to the world at large, Dr. Myss gives sacred meaning to all the 'simple' things in life. This tape is a must for anyone who feels they're not doing anything important in life or who feels their life is worthless.

In fact, Dr. Myss points out that life is supposed to be depressing at times, that even thoughts of suicide are to be expected in life's darkest moments that are sure to come and go. And, she points out, these dark moments DO eventually leave as she gives suggestions for how to move through these hollow times and emerge stronger and more faithful than before.

I disagree with Dr. Myss on only one point. While she stresses the importance of gratitude, she states it only counts if we express gratitude during the hard times in our lives. She seems to imply that gratitude comes too easily to matter when things in our lives are going as we want them to. Personally, I believe expressing gratitude for receiving or experiencing the things we want is just as important. Too many times, people take their good fortune for granted. It seems unsual for her to say expressing gratitude doesn't count unless we're miserable when we do.

Other than that and the fact that I know it was actually a three-hour lecture whittled down to a 90-minute cassette, I find this tape an incredibly illuminating and unique take on being a spiritual being in a human form. I know I'll listen to it again and again.

2-0 out of 5 stars ONLY If You Believe Suffering Equals Virtue
As a fan of Carolinen Myss and someone who has seen her speak I was conscious of her Catholic upbringing but totally unprepared for how different and overwhelmingly Judeo-Christian this material was. As a Buddhist I've always felt very included in her her language and her overall thrust. But unless someone comes to this believing that you must be humbled, that you must suffer and go into the darkness all alone to "hear God's will for you... that "it's not mine but thine" -- this will leave them wanting. It's definitely from the "no pain no gain" school of growth.

I absolutely did get some things of value. And her emphasis on the importance of gratitude and appreciation certainly resonated and was put in a way that was incredibly powerful. But I STILL had to do an adjustment since she meant gratitude to a diety... and that isn't part of how I feel the truth manifests.

I was sort of enjoying the second tape (the first was .... well... not for me)UNTIL she said (paraphrasing closely)"If I was the God of one of those people who chant or light incense or do incantations I would knock them on their butts so they would see Who was in charge."

I'm not a fan of arrogance. But I don't think one needs to BE HUMBLED in order to "get it."

I miss the Carolyn Myss who was bilingual. Unless of course this was solely for her Christian audience. ... Read more
