3-0 out of 5 stars In defense of victimhood...
I straddle the fence between faith in allopathic (Western) medicine and a more wholistic approach. So I bought this book eagerly. I have been both intrigued and disappointed.

I appreciate the hard scientific information: how our bodies work, how various procedures and substances affect them, the latest developments in health care. I also appreciated reading that things that I have long considered normal, like pregnancy, are indeed natural processes and not diseases or disabilities. But I didn't appreciate hearing that most medical problems are rooted in dysfunctional emotional states. While I think that there are some conditions that are amenable to a psychotherapeutic approach, I KNOW that the hideous cramps I suffered all through my young girlhood, from age 11 to about 27, were a lot more than merely a function of my ambivalence toward my burgeoning womanhood. And while this isn't my problem, the idea that an enlightened female doctor would tell an infertile woman that her infertility is caused by her own psychological state vis a vis parenthood is absolutely horrifying. As is the idea that grapefruit-sized ovarian cysts can be reduced by changing the way we regard ourselves in a patriarchal society. And the idea that most of our plumbing problems are rooted in our victimhood reverses all the gains in strength and self-confidence we've made in the past 30 years. And the less said about her friend the "medical intuitive," the better!

I recommend this book only to women who are grounded, strong in their sense of self as non-victims, and well-versed enough in medical knowledge to winnow through the junk and glean the good medical information. For the rest, I think it could be quite damaging.

5-0 out of 5 stars at last, a book focused on all aspects of women's health
what a brilliant, sensitive, informed, and thoughtful way to approach health issues particular to women. (Dartmouth Medical School-educated, if I recall correctly) Dr. Northrup truly combines the "Western" with the more "Eastern" approach to health, and she does it in a very balanced way.

this book covers quite a bit of ground: from the special relationship between the menstrual cycle and the lunar cycle to birth/miscarriage to menopause. it is not a book advocating one way or another, but rather explores and considers how a woman's health is affected by many things, both from within and without the body. she also talks about many things a woman can do to improve her health, in accessible and realistic terms.

I found especially useful the chapter on birth stories. Her discussion of labor and delivery allowed me to understand birthing on a deeper level, beyond the "pain," and provided me with more confidence and trust in my body and in the process of giving birth (which I was able to do without any medication). I loved the "wave" metaphor, that each contraction can be experienced as a wave that one dives under (mentally) to avoid being thrashed around.

lastly, this is one of a very few number of books that celebrates women and womanhood. just the title itself tells you so much. i think every woman would do well to have it on her shelf or next to her bed to consult from time to time.

5-0 out of 5 stars A book for every woman
I got this book as a gift 2 years ago and it has been an amazing discovery of so many things about me!
This book speaks to me as I am sure it will for every woman.
    A must have!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This book will teach you to think of your health and your whole self in a new way. Revolutionary.

4-0 out of 5 stars Double Edged Sword
This is the first major book to look at women's health systematically from a holistic perspective. My sister, an ND, gave this to me many years ago. I have referred to it many times since I first read it and my friends always want to borrow it. It's a great reference.

If you are looking purely for an objective scientific book on women's health then don't bother with this. There is a lot of scientific info but there's a lot of "non-science" as well. Read the lowest reviews first which fairly summarise the weaknesses of this text. I agree that this book comes across as flaky in places however it is a breakthrough work in terms of systematically exploring the integration of mind and body and the effect of this balance on health.

While I applaud the effort to make people realise how their mental state can impact their health, the other side of that sword is that women feel they are to blame for having the "wrong state of mind" which leads to poor health.

For instance in one story a woman became infertile because, in the author's opinion, she didn't feel her husband was the right person to have children with. If you're pragmatic you can hear this story, consider if it applies to you and discard it if it doesn't fit. But some women could develop a guilt complex over something that is upsetting on its own without the added blame.

Ultimately, the problem with this kind of thinking is that it leads to a vicious worry cycle: you worry that you might not have the right state of mind for good health... and then you worry that your worrying risks your health further! But to ignore this altogether also poses risk. Stress does cause disease and an integrated approach to health cannot exist without considering a person's state of mind.

Because this book provides significant medical information, the reader could be lead into taking all the author's opinions as fact. Take the opinions as just that and you will find the book enjoyable. It is informative and thought provoking. ... Read more

Designed to be a resource for both women who want to maintain breast health and those who've been diagnosed with breast cancer, Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way draws on "women's wisdom," or the inner knowledge often ignored by modern medicine, as a powerful tool for healing. Author Susun Weed proposes an anticancer lifestyle, and, if cancer does enter the picture, a six-step plan for healing (sleep is at zero, or "Do Nothing"; surgery is number six, which she terms "Break and Enter"), with various complementary healing techniques included throughout.

Weed is careful to point out that supplements and herbs can hurt as much as they can help, and she lists several alternative-medicine techniques that should be avoided no matter what. The steps she does recommend--from herbal oils for breast massage to help detect lumps early to the herbs milk thistle, dandelion, and burdock for women with liver damage from tamoxifen--are explained clearly, sometimes with fascinating quotes from centuries-old books on healing.

Weed will draw ire from some readers for recommending that mammograms be avoided. She says they tend to squeeze cancer cells into the bloodstream and can't detect cancer until it's metastatic, which are reasons enough to not have them, and adds that women would be better off by making her suggested anticancer lifestyle changes, paying more attention to their breasts, and performing regular self-exams.

The warnings about the dangers of electromagnetic fields, exposure to estrogen, and organochlorides from plastics may frighten some, but Weed means to enlighten and empower. She dedicates the book to environmentalist and Silent Spring author Rachel Carson and poet Audre Lorde, who both died of breast cancer. Extensive herbal resources, a solid glossary, and a thorough index are included. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books on the Market!
Whether you or perhaps a friend or family member have had breast cancer, or you are a woman, period, this is a book you should have in your personal library. Author Susun Weed brings you every step of the way in breast health, which modern medicines and practitioners tend to either ignore or not explore.

Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way is the first step to wellness and staying healthy. Author Susun Weed has certainly done her homework, with research and a natural lifestyle. She begins with a small personal story and the awakening from it, which leads to the disclosure of her anti-cancer lifestyle, a one page insight of balance and harmony, then ends this section with a how-to on using this book, about herbs and their dangers.

She begins her chapters with the statistics of breast cancer and how they make her feel, how it makes us all feel. She leaves nothing out with her research with complete scientific data and what is accepted in the medical society and what may be likely but not proven. She explores every angle in a not so easy subject.

Moving on to "Can Foods Prevent Cancer?" Again she has done her homework and provided a wealth of information on anti cancer foods, she explores foods, herbs, oils, phytochemicals, vitamins and minerals. In "Taking Our Breasts into Our Own Hands, Breast Self Massage", Ms. Weed goes far beyond just the how-to that we so often get from our Doctors and clinics, thoroughly discussing the many aspects of self-breast exam, including an extensive list and uses of different oils.

As you make your way to the following chapters, you begin to expect much more from her. This is exactly what she gives you! With "Building Powerful Immunity, Journey to the Wise Healer Within", " Mammograms -Who Needs Them?" and the last of the first Section "There's a Lump in my Breast!", she brings you completely full circle as she delves into each of these subjects.

Section two has some of the scariest of topics, but the author gently eases your anxiety as if she is right beside you holding your hand, letting you know you are not alone by exploring every aspect of having Breast Cancer. From "What is Breast Cancer? The Diagnosis", dealing with your emotional state, to "Choosing Surgery Questions to Ask," the topics just continue to flow to give you a complete in-depth exploration, with recipes, suggestions and what to expect no matter what you decide. She gives you extensive resource lists on just about every topic. This book is not a get healed fast pill, but instead an exploratory journey, on one of the most feared and extended taboo subjects in our time. Through it all Susun reminds you; this is Your Life, take control!

Hail to Susun Weed who has brought the light in an age of darkness with this book! Every Clinic, Gynecologist and Oncologist worth their weight should read, then recommend "Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way," to all their patients. I give this wonderful archive of information my highest of recommendations!

    M.L. Benton,

5-0 out of 5 stars An empowering, well-researched book.
Finally a book that gives women practical direction on how to facilitate breast health and how to deal with suspicious lumps. The medical community offers us mammograms and biopsies, but the gaps between these procedures are often filled with agonizing uncertainty for most women. Thank you Ms. Weed, for giving us the information we have so desperately needed to be able channel our energies into strengthening our bodies and empowering our spirits.

1-0 out of 5 stars a misguided approach to a serious disease with mistatements
There may be some useful information in this book but her statements about mammograms pushing cancer cells into other parts of the body have no validity and no scientific proof. She is promoting some dangerous thinking that ignores the advances that have been made in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. Do not let this be the only book you read on the subject!

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must read for women and girls!
Breast Cancer? Breast Health! The Wise Woman Way by Susun Weed is a significant contribution to the state of women's health. She has woven statistics, research results, myths and facts into a fabric that is warm and inviting. Her style of injecting motherly and grandmotherly wisdom while sharing facts is very effective. She certainly helped me to accept that breast health is important and more than correct brassiere fitting. I received the book from a friend a few days after I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. I curled up with the book and read for hours, absorbing the spiritual soothing of the letters from the "grandmothers". I was challenged to rethink what I had already experienced and where I should step next. For instance had I read Weed's book prior to the diagnostic tests, I would not have submitted to a mammogram, clearly less than six months after a previous one. I would have requested an ultrasound, since the fact of the lump had already been established. The book encouraged me to slow down and think about optons and my direction. It made me know that I was not foolish in thinking that I could choose a way that would enhance my natural healing capacities rather than compromise them. It has been invaluable as a resource during my journey. The cancer-free lifestyle outline was formidable and empowering. The levels and types of breast cancer that Weed explained equipped me to understand pathology reports and information given in consultations with surgeons and oncologists. I realized gaps in nutritional information, since I was not aware of the many cancer-fighting foods and enzymes. The book encouraged me to reassess my eating habits and to become more serious about my diet. Weed also very ably handles the existing options for women diagnosed with breast cancer. Although she is very clearly a proponent of holistic approaches to healing, she makes the women who would choose the conventional approaches know that their decisions are personal and to be respected. There is no intense politicizing of the issues such that women will feel ashamed or less than courageous if they select the usually recommended course of treatment. She is an advocate for wise behavior on the part of women. Weed has achieved an important goal by writing a book that is womanish, informative, challenging and timely. I agree with her concern that in the next century people will look back and consider our conventional way of treating breast cancer to be barbaric.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is highly recommended to all women.
Every woman should read this book, most definitely so if you have cancer. The positive and very well researched suggestions for a healthy lifestyle by a very experienced, knowledgeable and compassionate herbalist will improve the quality of anyone's life and health. Many are easy to incorporate, even pleasurable. There is something here for everyone, and if you do have cancer, there is no better place you could turn. The recommended reading list is excellent. The ideas presented will strengthen you, soothe you, help you withstand the effects of chemotherapy and strengthen your immune system to help your own body fight the cancer. No dangerous remedies here. All very safe and gentle (with appropriate warnings and toxicities mentioned in the few cases where appropriate). Very effective ideas. Any of us can benefit by strengthening our immune systems and by avoiding toxic substances. ... Read more

Menopause doesn't have to be a dreaded curse of aging during which we can look forward only to hot flashes and whacked-out hormonal mood swings. According to Christiane Northrup, M.D. (Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom), menopause often marks the beginning of a woman's most sexually passionate, creatively inspired, and professionally productive phase of life.

While this may sound like wishful thinking, Northrup backs up her good news with solid medical expertise. As an obstetrician and gynecologist, Northrup has specialized in using a mind-body approach to women's health for decades, which means she doesn't just write about hormones, but also examines how a woman's lifestyle, emotions, and beliefs are affected by menopause. With the right diet, attitude, and perhaps some supplements along the way, women can actually look forward to a resurgence of energy and a revolutionary opportunity for personal growth--one that rivals the hormonally driven period of adolescence in its scope and urgency, she claims. And yes, at just under 500 pages, The Wisdom of Menopause does explain how to have a positive and healthy menopause in concise detail. Northrup has indeed "written the book" on menopause.

It helps that Northrup has been through menopause herself (she vowed she wouldn't write a book on it until she was on the other side). Readers have the sense that they are gleaning advice from a knowledgeable holistic doctor as well as a sage aunt whose life was radically altered by the "change of life" (Northrup divorced at the onset of menopause). After she shares her personal story of "the change," Northrup delves into a significant discussion on how self-sacrifice catches up with women in midlife. Suddenly, hormones are directing women out of the caregiver role and into an inwardly focused assessment of life and its meaning, she explains. Resentments (not hormones) are what spur the notorious surges of anger, as women reexamine the agreements surrounding their relationships with colleagues, friends, and family members.

From here, Northrup guides readers into a thorough section on menopausal hormone changes--a discussion that is scientifically informative, yet entirely accessible. While acknowledging the need for hormone-replacement therapy and the tremendous relief it can provide (helping to alleviate insomnia, hot flashes, and depression), Northrup encourages women to avoid synthetic hormones and instead consider "bioidentical" hormones (such as estradiol, estrone, and estriol). She also devotes an entire chapter to foods and supplements that support hormonal balance. By the way, she says to skip the wild Mexican yam creams: "they certainly don't provide the documented benefits of progesterone." Be warned: some readers may find the advice in Wisdom of Menopause too alternative for their liking. For example, in her discussion on insomnia, one of Northrup's recommendations is to cover the mirror at night, following the ancient Asian design principles of feng shui. (Skeptics will find Northrup's medical assertions carefully cited and footnoted in the rear of her book.)

Northrup gives a solid and practical diet plan that supports hormonal balance while countering the weight gain that so frequently plagues menopausal women ("focus on portion size, not calories," "eat protein at every meal," and cut down on refined and high-carbohydrate foods). Readers can also expect a thorough mind-body discussion in subsequent chapters that cover breast health, bone loss, and cultivating midlife beauty, along with chapters titled "Sex and Menopause: Myths and Reality" and "Creating Pelvic Health and Power."

She concludes with a list of mail-order and online resources, such as retailers for bioidentical hormones, progesterone cream, Chinese herbs, soy products, weight-loss audiocassettes, lubricants, and Kegel weights. Northrup takes a truly comprehensive approach to all the effective treatments of menopausal symptoms so that women can make their own highly informed and wise choices. --Gail Hudson ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read It Before You Need It!
I recommend that women read Dr. Northrup's book before they need it! That way, the reader can start at the beginning of the book, read it from cover to cover, and enjoy the book. Then it can be used as a reference when the signs and symptoms of menopause begin. If that's not possible, and you're dealing with perimenopause or full-blown menopause, then skip the first few chapters. Otherwise, you'll be ready to divorce your spouse, thinking that's the answer to your mulititude of problems. Bloated? Get a divorce. Night sweats? Get a divorce. No sexual drive? Get a divorce. Instead, look for the chapters that deal with your symptoms. The information on diet and diet supplements is extremely useful. It's also helpful to be able to "talk the talk" when going to an ob-gyn. You will with this book. You'll know what tests to request and what questions to ask. I now feel prepared and educated instead of defeated.

3-0 out of 5 stars Does she want me to morph into someone I'm not?
As Boomers, many of my friends and I are in varying stages of peri or actual menopause. I've read Dr. Northrup's book and thought she had a great attitude toward the whole process. However, she doesn't seem to realize that most women will not accept their menopause as an opportunity to tell everyone to kiss off and go their own way as she seems to have done. She says she took a fake hormone pill due to fibroids and it "kick started" her brain and told her she needed to become someone else, someone who would use menopause as an opportunity to be selfish and aggressive. Well, honey, if you aren't that way to begin with, stopping the monthlies ain't the magic that's gonna make you that way! If you've never watched your diet, exercised, told your husband exactly what you thought, and/or struck out on your own and did exactly as you pleased, you're not going to suddenly do it now. I can't imagine anything more stressful at that time of a woman's life than doing what Dr. Northrup asks us to do and becoming a completely different person!!! No thanks, I'll take MY doctor's advice over her's.

5-0 out of 5 stars Menopause is more than hot flashes, night sweats and HRT
This book was recommended to me by a holistic therapist when I was talking about all the chaos that has decended into my life. She said that "its part of menopause" and refered this book. She was so right. From the moment I started reading it, I started identifying with a lot of the things that she was saying.

In reading many of the other reviews, I feel that most the one star people never got beyond the first few chapters. They never saw the indepth discussions on building bones, the discussions on why you start gaining weight even though you haven't changed your diet or excercise, or the discussion of heart health. They were turned off by her discussions of her personal life and experience...everyone of which mentioned the tarot card references which were such a small part and only mentioned in the beginning! I thought it made her more human. Nor did I feel she was telling us to ditch everyone in our lives. What I picked up and what I really do feel is important is that we need to constantly reevaluate our live, keep what IS working and change (not neccessarily discard)what isn't and unfortunately, most of us don't do that till our lives go haywire. Menopause is a major haywire occurances.

One of the things that drew me to the book and her attitude is that she approaches everything from an 'understand what is happaning, understand your options, decide what is best for you' point of view. In particular, in this 'here take a pill for that' world we live in, her change your lifestyle first and if that doesn't work, then let's look at the medication and surgical answers was very refreshing.

Menopause is so much more than hot flashes and night sweats and to have one book that goes into all the health issues (physical, mental, and emotional) that we face in this stage of our lives was extremely helpful to me. I highly recommend this book...and if you don't want to hear about her personal experiences, skip Chapter 1, and only want to deal with the medical part, start with Chapter 4.

2-0 out of 5 stars Medical Information or Rage Against Men
While this book has some very helpful and interesting things in it (i.e., herbs, Chakras, tarot, etc.), I couldn't help feeling a thread of anger directed towards men. It took away from the book.

I think we have to be very careful of going from one extreme to another--the one case of being/feeling subservient to men to the other case of being completely separated from men. In my opinion, either extreme is very unhealthy. While it would also be unhealthy for people to stay in relationships that are debilitating to EITHER partner, it would also be unhealthy to cut people out of our lives because of our hormones. (Although if I've understood Dr. Northup correctly, it's not just the hormones, but also the baggage we carry that's part of the problem.) Perhaps when we feel comfortable in our own feminity, we won't feel threatened by men.

This being the case, the book should have a different title, as it's misleading, in my opinion. You think you're going to read about how to deal, accept and/or handle menopause, and instead you get a bunch of what I call "ranting."

3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Start, but Needs More Focus to Be Truly Helpful
This book has some very useful information, but there is no attempt to discuss the research base for complementary treatments. For example, there is research accumulating that black cohosh and flaxseeds are safe and effective measures for hotflashes and other menopause changes.

As host of the menopause web site for, I get a lot of questions from women about these approaches. I wish Dr. Northrup had examined the better researched ones instead of discussing Tarot cards. Also, her discussion of her own divorce took away from the focus of the book.

In many health care situations, it is often the nurse or nurse practitioner who answers women's menopause questions and I'm looking forward to a book that presents menopause from this point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cards to Stimulate Your Own Intuitive Knowing
"Thoughts collide in the activity of expression, and the dance goes on with meanings that are beyond rational perception." ~Dancing in the Mirror by Bryan Walton

First, I must say that these cards are quite beautiful and the edges are smooth and golden. Each card shows art that was chosen purely for its archetypal quality and classical style. The interpretation of the images are meant to encourage your own intuitive wisdom.

The 50-card deck and small booklet are all you need to get started. The cards are divided into five key life areas: Fertility & Creativity, Partnership, Nurturance/Self-Care, Self-Expression, Enlightened Heart & Mind. These areas are clearly marked at the top of each card and the cards are color coded into pastel green, pink, yellow, blue and violet.

Each life area is divided into developmental steps which are represented on the ten different cards.

To use the cards you look at the image and then refer to the booklet for additional information as needed.

Of course I was a little freaked out when the first card I picked was the "Risk vs. Safety" card which might have something to do with all the messages floating my way in books and here we find someone jumping out into the unknown. I set out the "How to use your creativity optimally" reading. The first card is supposed to tell me what I've learned about myself so far. I picked Fertility & Creativity VI Risk vs. Safety. Then, the second card is about what you are learning now and I found Nurturance/Self-Care V. Perfection vs. Imperfection. Then Card three is about your next step and that said: "Channel clearly." Then, onward to card 4 where it speaks of how I can create value for myself and others: "Prepare." The last card is supposed to show my Highest purpose and it says: "Complete and Move On."

Then, you can look in the booklet to see the deeper meanings of the images on the cards. All the artwork is rather beautiful and the cards are in themselves works of art. I was very pleased to find the "Art Credits" because otherwise I would have been eternally wondering who painted each picture, etc.

From the cards I picked out I started to understand more about birthing new projects and seeing if creations will fly on their own. Am I being told that I am supposed to jump out into the unknown in some way? The third card was quite meaningful in that it explored the possibility of creating something of value for others that uplifts and assists them in their daily life. The fourth card seems to be saying I should make more time for exercise. The last card shows a woman sitting and reading beautiful books and is a painting by Bernardino Pinturicchio.

The entire process of being inspired by the cards is a highly personal one and all the cards really seem to do is bring elements to the surface of your mind. I found that it was very easy to figure out what the cards were saying because the booklet was helpful and the pictures made complete sense. Basically you are using the cards as mirrors to reflect unconscious patterns to your conscious mind. I was very impressed with the first results of using this card set, although they were a bit too accurate. ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Information
Very valuable information for everyone and easy to listen to. These women have so much real information to share that is difficult to find elsewhere, but it is like listening to your smarter girlfriends having a conversation. I liked the combination of styles and the fact that the doctors shared some of their lives, including their own ups and downs. I can relate to them as opposed to the "experts" that are pushing a certain type diet or program (why do those experts always write another book a few years later with a new, different program?)
    Great stuff.

5-0 out of 5 stars WOW!
Intuitively, I always knew that all of me was connected and this certainly confirms that. Thank you!

3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but.......
There was so much in this tape series that is interesting that I hesitate to critise the work but here goes.... Dr. Schulz and Dr. Northrup are totally fun, because they are good friends and know each other very well. This is a plus and a minus, they have good information to impart, but sometimes the "conversational tone" of the tape series takes away from the content.

I wrote down the helpful info but they don't reiterate or restate necessary herbal medication info to treat various disorders. Actually this is a critism of the tape medium, itself; a book is better to look up information. Especially in a 6 tape series, where was the information? I listened to the series over a two day period. I found the information area's hard to recall. I felt the formate should have been tighter for info less chit chat and yet a part of me, ok, the gossipy part, loved that aspect of the tape.

I get Dr. Northrup's newsletter so I am familiar with her philosopys and positions on medical treatments. They try to look at people in a wholistic way. We are the sum of our parts, seen and unseen (genetic), plus they add the spiritual element of soul too. Making a really complete "primordial soup" of a human being. They focus on women, but have several men that they analyze their medical problems and look at their whole life to find the reason for their problem. Then they attempt to give advice, and the least intrusive medical solution, to solve or ease the medical problem.

I appreciate the attitude they both have toward medicine. Which is look at the whole person and his/her cosmology and DON'T try to over medicate or over operate to fix the problem. The less is more philosophy.

In conclusion, I loved the chattiness and personal touch of the two doctors, although it took away from the important information somewhat. I would have preferred a book so I could look up the specific herbs and treatments for different things. Another thing they could have done was put a short little series of "Depression can be treated with St. Johns Wort ---dose." Anxiety with Kava Kava and.... dosage such or something like that. Easy to find and at the end, just dealing with what they dealt with in the tape series. ... Read more

    Book Description

... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worth your time & attention.
After discovering Dr. Christiane Northrup on my local PBS station, I was amazed at the content that was presented. This audio program is a useful tool to every person on this planet. I say this in spite of her emphasis on female-related topics. Men will find a deeper understanding of every woman in their lives, as well as a huge amount of content that applies to us as well. The key I think that ties the genders together in this work is the simple fact that both men and women, in varying levels, have the same hormones within us (you'll find that's strongly related to what we should be eating individually).

Human development over the centuries have brought us to a clear understanding of what makes us who we are. You quickly will hear the conviction and authority in Dr. Northrup's presentation, a testament to her understanding of this development process. I personally am treating "Your Diet, Your Health" and "Eat Right 4 Your Type", a book with a wealth of helpful information, to become cornerstones of wellness development. These two products complement one another significantly. You are encouraged to experiment with the foods you eat, specifically with what works for YOU. Nothing force-fed! This should truly mark the end of an over-extended "diet era", particularly here in the United States. When you have listened to it several times, you should feel a strong urge to share it with all of those people that you really care about. It's that good. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring book
This book gives a new vision of the female world, uncovering and fighting those clichés that have been persecuting us throughout our lives.
With Doctor Northrup's book we can at last identify with our physical and spiritual roles and love ourselves more. We (women) are unique creatures who need this unique and inspiring book.

    5-0 out of 5 stars Women's Bodies, Women's Choices
I recently had an oophorectomy and my gynecologist and acupuncturist recommended I read this book before surgery. I had problems with ovarian cysts before, so I knew what to expect with this surgery. When I received this book and opened it automatically to page 217 - Ovarian Cysts, my heart stopped. Dr. Northrup was writing about me, my left ovary, stress, and creative block. I read the page 3 times to make sure I didn't write it myself. I recently purchased this book for a close friend who is having fertility problems. She cried because Dr. Northrup described her situation perfectly. As a senior editor of federal medical information, I HIGHLY recommend this book for yourself, relative, or friend. You see yourself on several pages, with each page presenting thoughtful, intelligent, and practical advice and guidelines on, not only western medicine, but holistic/alternative medicine. As a 12-year patient of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I recognized Dr. Northrup's acceptance and pursuit of the added value of other-than-western-medicine alternatives for health and balance in a hectic life. Dr. Northrup speaks with you, not at you. She offers qualified, sensible care treatments that we can and should practice everyday, most without added effort. If you do anything for yourself, purchase this book. You will cherish it because you deserve the information she shares.

4-0 out of 5 stars Should be part of every woman's research on full living
I saw this program, most of it, on PBS on a local station. It was fascinating, and the fact that Christiane Northrup is an MD adds to the "both sides" context -- woman and doctor. She really informs us that men and women have much to offer to their own physical health, before or without doctors, depending on the various needs. (Obviously, she does not advise we remove our own appendix or let a sick appendix get only watchful waiting!) I hope the video will be available in future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent video on Women's health and wellbeing.
I happened on a PBS (KQED) showing of this video. I was so inspired by Dr. Christiane Northrup talk. She is a wonderful and funny speaker. She speaks to the female in all of us, even the men. Her life experiences, doctors view, realizations and insights expose one to new ways of looking at Self and health as a whole package and not in the traditional way of medicine and treatment. To see your body not as an enemy, but as a wise friend that should be listened to. She speaks about disease and illness as a possible learning process driven by the body and mind, an opportunity to expand oneself instead of closing down, giving up and just dying. As a woman swiftly approaching menopause I was relieved to find that I am in the right place and right frame of mind to enter this Wisdom period of my life. Dr. Northrup total validated my woman's life from start to finish, as journey filled with adventure, trials and constant learning. Thank you Dr. Northrup. I was disappointed that this video is not available for sale at this time. It would make a great gift to any woman of any age. I would especially recommend this video for young girls before they become young women. It will enrich their future health and wellbeing. It will let them be proud to be women.

5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific video tape. One that every woman should view.
Women's Bodies, Women's Choices really looks at four areas of women's health: heart disease, breast care, menopause and the menstrual cycle. Dr. Northrup outlines many of the choices women are faced with as they work with their healthcare professional to achieve better health. Dr. Northrup makes the material fun and most importantly understandable. She really helps one understand the true mind-body connection. We need more from her! ... Read more

Women's Bodies, Women's Health is a perpetual calendar from women's health pioneer Dr. Christiane Northrup. Each day has a thought, observation, resolution, series of questions, or call to action to enhance physical and emotional health. These are not clever quotes and very few are snappy sayings. Rather, most are thoughtful and introspective. For example, one day asks, "If I had only six months to live, would I stay at my current job? Would I stay with my current partner? Would it take a serious illness for me to begin making beneficial changes in my life?" Another day suggests, "No one can fix our lives for us. We need to set out consciously to do it for ourselves. We must trust what we know in our bones: that our bodies are our allies, and that they will always point us in the direction we need to go next." Occasionally a day will have a short statement, like "It takes a great deal of energy to keep someone out of our hearts," and "Smoking, like any addiction, numbs you to feelings you don't want to experience." Women's Bodies, Women's Health comments on topics as diverse as menopause, premenstrual breast pain, assertiveness, physical activity, nutrition, dreams, emotional expression, motherhood, health care, and cultivating a loving relationship with your inner self. --Joan Price ...
