Book Description

How do we make decisions--good and bad--and why are some people so much better at it than others? Thats the question Malcolm Gladwell asks and answers in the follow-up to his huge bestseller, The Tipping Point. Utilizing case studies as diverse as speed dating, pop music, and the shooting of Amadou Diallo, Gladwell reveals that what we think of as decisions made in the blink of an eye are much more complicated than assumed. Drawing on cutting-edge neuroscience and psychology, he shows how the difference between good decision-making and bad has nothing to do with how much information we can process quickly, but on the few particular details on which we focus. Leaping boldly from example to example, displaying all of the brilliance that made The Tipping Point a classic, Gladwell reveals how we can become better decision makers--in our homes, our offices, and in everyday life. The result is a book that is surprising and transforming. Never again will you think about thinking the same way. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of the best business/success books out there
Unfortunately, during my experience with corporate America I've had several business/success books thrust upon me. The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is the only one that was worth reading.

This book, coupled with the First Things First training I received at work has had an enormous impact on me. Five years later, I still organize my life based on my mission statement, roles, and goals. I plan weekly and take time out to Sharpen the Saw. I don't always live up to the seven habits, but at least I'm going in the right direction. Periodically I pull this book out of my bookshelf and flip through it to reinforce the lessons it contains. It's also one of the few books I've ever bought someone as a gift.

My biggest criticism is that Covey has a tendency to beat you over the head with examples. Numerous times as I read the book I thought to myself, I get it, move on. My other big complaint is that this book coined the word "proactive," which is believed to mean the opposite of reactive, but actually means that the person using it is an idiot and needs to resort to using made-up words to appear highly effective.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has definitely changed my life for the better.
This is a book that has changed my life irrevocably and forever. It required great energy, patience and time to read, one with much meaning and very deep in content. In fact, after struggling through the first two Principles outlined in this book I found myself putting it away on the shelf. For nearly a year it sat there and I didn't pick it up again until I had another reason to. The second time around I could not put the book down and took prolific amounts of notes. The third time I read it I learned even more.

This book is about self, about becoming the true you and living your life optimally. This is not a pep-rally or a psychological breakdown of "The 100 Top Tips to Boost Your Self-Esteem". The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People is all about understanding where you can (should) be taking yourself in your life. The influence, the support, the understanding, the energy that Dr. Stephen Covey discusses comes from within yourself; it is not an external influence that fades as soon as the source is gone. You create it; you live it; it becomes you and you become it. These principles are not subject to the whims of others. You create yourself, you build upon yourself and you become an effective person in your life through learning to help yourself and others. You learn how to graduate from dependence to independence and then even further on to a higher level: interdependence all by looking deeply within yourself and following seven sound principles that are laid out in a very logical, rational and emotionally-sound manner. The principles behind Dr. Covey's ideas are based on faith in self, community and God. He helps you to understand the philosophy, "Love Me for Me."

In The Seven Habits, Covey talks about the Personal Mission Statement. This is a project that you create, write, rewrite over and over until it describes the person you most want to be. Then you simply spend the rest of your life living those beliefs until you become that person. It is probably the easiest, yet most difficult thing you will ever do in your entire life. Why? Because you must devote your entire life, and energy to this task. How easy it is to become side-tracked and slide into old habits of comfort. But these old habits are the ones that you want to rewrite with new, better habits. This is a difficult road to follow. It is also, without a doubt the most rewarding activity you will ever do in your entire life. After all, the most rewarding things in life are often the most difficult.

Stephen Covey outlines the best strategies for maximum effectiveness in this great book. The fact that this book has remained a best seller for over 15 years should tell you something about the merits of the informmation that it contains.

Highly recommended book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely a must read book
I have worked for major corporations and I have been self employed in direct sales and network marketing. Hardly a day goes by when I don't find someone who recommends and in many cases, carries The 7 Habits around with them in their briefcase.

In a world of me, me, me, me. It's great to have a noted and highly respected authority like Dr. Covey teach the concepts of "Win-Win" and "seek first to understand, then be understood."

I am also happy to see that Dr. Covey has endorsed network marketing and recommends it. easy to understand why. Network marketing is indeed the wave of the future so it makes sense that the professionals of the present and the near future will be applying Dr. Coveys techniques just as those Fortune 500 companies have been doing since the 1980's.

Great book. I highly recommend it to everyone and especially network marketers who want to significantly grow their business.

Thank you Dr. Covey for a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book
The way the author has deconstructed human development and potential is insightful. The author's view is that people first develop a triumvirate individual competances and skills.

Book Description

"Why did crime in New York drop so suddenly in the mid-90s? How does an unknown novelist end up a bestselling author? Why is teenage smoking out of control, when everyone knows smoking kills? What makes TV shows like Sesame Street so good at teaching kids how to read? Why did Paul Revere succeed with his famous warning? In this brilliant and groundbreaking book, New Yorker writer Malcolm Gladwell looks at why major changes in our society so often happen suddenly and unexpectedly.Ideas, behavior, messages, and products, he argues, often spread like outbreaks of infectious disease. Just as a single sick person can start an epidemic of the flu, so too can a few fare-beaters and graffiti artists fuel a subway crime wave, or a satisfiedcustomer fill the empty tables of a new restaurant. These are social epidemics, and the moment when they take off, when they reach their critical mass, is the Tipping Point.

In The Tipping Point, Gladwell introduces us to the particular personality types who are natural pollinators of new ideas and trends, the people who create the phenomenon of word of mouth. He analyzes fashion trends, smoking, children's television, direct mail and the early days of the American Revolution for clues about making ideas infectious, and visits a religious commune, a successful high-tech company, and one of the world's greatest salesmen to show how to start and sustain social epidemics. The Tipping Point is an intellectual adventure story written with an infectious enthusiasm for the power and joy of new ideas. Most of all, it is a road map to change, with a profoundly hopeful message--that one imaginative person applying a well-placed lever can move the world." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Insights into Mass Behaviors
Despite an earlier reviewer poo-pooing this book for shallow insights, I beg to differ. This book is a fascinating and original take on what makes people behave in a certain way en masse. Tying together Paul Revere, Hush Puppies and many other very accessible ideas makes this book, that is in some ways very academic, read like a thriller. I read it in three sittings. It has an impact on several levels. One, as a marketer, it gave me insights into how word-of-mouth really works. I'll be experimenting with these concepts for years. Second, as a member of society, I gained insight into why I am pulled this way and that by trends. If you enjoyed this, you'll also enjoy the groundbreaking book by Robert Cialdini called "Influence, the Psychology of Persuasion." It makes some of the same points. Finally, it makes me think that some savvy activists will find some ways to use these principles to start societal epidemics that will ultimately have a positive effect. I believe Gladwell has introduced a concept, "the Tipping Point," that will have a wide-ranging impact on how we view the world and human behavior.

5-0 out of 5 stars Bowled me over.
This book is quite wonderful, and it doesn't surprise me at all that it's getting such solid reviews here. Gladwell writes wonderful pieces for the New Yorker (and elsewhere, no doubt), and the craft of the writing here combines with fascinating material to produce a book for the lively of mind.

What is a "tipping point"? Gladwell shows us how concepts and perceptions derived from epidemiology can provide unexpected, but highly plausible explanations for the transformation of a minor phenomenon into a major trend. Gladwell's examples are diverse, drawn from such apparently disparate worlds as policing, fashion, and medical research, but they work well to create a sense that there's a logic at play in the crazes and fads we see turn into cultural trends.

Obviously, this book would be a good read for anyone interested in forcasting consumer behaviour, and other business concerns. I read it, though, as a person interested in culture and the trends which form the fabric of our waking lives. I read it twice, in fact, because it's very well written, and because I used it to teach theories of information to university students, who also really "got" the book. I find that concepts drawn froom the book return to me in unlikely situations, and that's a true test of non-fiction.

My only complaint? It's not long enough!

3-0 out of 5 stars Esoterica
This is a fun book to read, but the dots remain uncconected.
I much prefer works that are more practical, and guide you directly to where you are going, instead of this very indirect analysis.
Some examples of this direct approach which are exceptionally well done include the CD "Voice Lessons to go" and the DVD "New Sex Now."
All of these are fun and enjoyable and will improve your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars does not disappoint
I rarely pick up a book that holds my interest all the way. This book was exceptional though and I have recommended it to many of my friends. The book discusses what causes an epidemic- how one tiny product, tv show, event, etc influences so many. I was impressed by the number of case studies and research that Gladwell did to back up his point. I really enjoyed learning about the influence Sesame Street had on the literary rate of the children who watched it, while what causes problems like teen smoking and suicide. It was a very interesting read.

1-0 out of 5 stars Tiresome and Repetitive
Tipping Point is a painful book to read, painful especially to contemplate the patchwork of fill that turns what at best is a pop magazine article into a poor excuse for a book. Gladwell stabs at any theme he can possibly use to support his by no means new theory of tipping points. He hits one, perhaps, when he covers Rudy Giuliani's results in the City of New York, buts the rest are paler attempts. His comparison of Paul Revere with Dawes is over-romantic and downright silly. There's something profoundly patronizing about his tone of writing and his lack of any kind of wit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Yes, I loved it
Marrianne Williamson's work is both real and honest. Rather than couch things in a concepts that are alien or extremely religious, she talks to you about the realities of existing. Of how things will not always be easy, about how you will lose your way, and honestly how to see people clearly. Growth is messy, it's not neat, maturity is not easy, nor is spirtiuality delicate work, but with assistance from a tape like this you can see yourself clearly and how to bridge yourself from concept to human to spiritual being.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Stellar Performance!
Marianne Williamson has a way of shaking the Universe upside down and letting all the stars fall out and into your heart. She quotes often from "A Course in Miracles," yet this work isn't "sermonious" or demanding. It is nourishing and easygoing. Miracles are to be expected, and forgiveness applies to oneself first.

If, according to Thoreau, "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation," then perhaps the mass would be canonized by listening to "An Inspirational Companion." I know I certainly felt better about myself, and life in general after learning how to coax meaning from the darkness of everyday life. Marianne says that we are all God's gift to the world. What a wonderful thought! If you are searching for enlightenment, then these lectures will show you where to look - the stars are flickering right there, as twinkles in your own eyes. . .all you 'gotta' do is look inside to realize that. I loved it!! ... Read more

Book Description

Is there a way to always have a fat bank account, or a better job, or a delightfully smooth relationship, or a better body? And if so, is it really possible to realize these dreams now, rather than at some unknown future time? Lynn Grabhorn answers these questions with a resounding "Yes!" In Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting, she says that what actually molds every moment of every day of one's life are feelings. Using a candid, witty approach to a genre riddled with self-important puffery, she shows how feelings - not positive thinking, or sweat and strain, or good or bad luck, or even smarts - set the tone for people's lives. She frames her theory as a four-part plan that covers all the big topics - money, relationships, health, and spirituality - without being pompous or preachy. Grabhorn's "Law of Attraction" lets the seeker find peace and pleasure in life by feeling rather than by thinking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Oh Yes! It does WORK!
I am a self help book addict! I bought this book a year ago..browsed it and put it back on my bookshelf. 3 months ago as I was digging for a literally fell of the shelf and hit me on the head. Okay..I got the hint. I read it and could not put it down. I immediatly started practicing what Lynn writes..Instead of thinking positive have to "FEEL" the positive emotions behind the thoughts. Example : Thought : I want a new car. Feeling: Feel the feeling of driving the new car..the smell of the new car you are soaring in good vibes as you start your engine of your new car..I think you get my drift. It sounds so easy..but by Gosh it works and within 2 weeks of reading her book, I had changes of prosperity in my life. I actually loaned the book to my sister a few months ago and want it BACK..I want to re-read it again and again.
Great book, easy and fun reading.
I am giving it 5 stars because the concept was easy to understand, she explains a very hard concept "feelings" and gives you the map/directions on how to start practicing immediatly.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excuse me, this is the best book ever!
I'm not usually compelled to write a review for a book I've read, but this one did it. Lynn Grabhorn takes the simple premise that "like attracts like" and beautifully demonstrates how it applies to our everyday experiences. Her theories behind positively and negatively projected energy are simple and make so much sense!! Composed in humorous, informal fashion, Ms. Grabhorn makes reading her book feel like a conversation with a good friend. I recommend it to anyone who is intersted in a refreshing new outlook on life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Life changing
Lynn has passed. I just went to her website on a whim ( and found out. There was no mention of a date or how it happened... I was saddened, but she would not want anyone grieving for her. Our purpose here on Earth is JOY.... it's funny - I was never moved to review her book here until now. Now I want everyone to know how life-changing it can be. It is the Law of Attraction made simple. And if you truly listen, it can mean everything to your now, and your future. If you've somehow been lead to this entry on Amazon, chances are it's syncronistic for you, and the universe is telling you to order this book! If you feel at all led to do so, then go for it. The Law of Attraction is working in your life even if you are not consciously aware of it, so harnessing it consciously can totally change things for you for the better!

2-0 out of 5 stars spoiled by bad thinking
If the book (I listened to the cassette tapes) works for people, I can't argue with that, and I can understand why it is so compelling - it tries to return people to a belief in a richer life for themselves. But to me it seemed that the book added little to what's been around for ages. Instead of just visualizing what you want and where you want to be, *feel* what that will be like. Basically that's it. My bigger problem is that it contains some of the worst and most irresponsible thinking I have ever encountered. A woman who is raped has "magnetized" that rapist to her by her fear. A child who is harmed was carrying her parents' negative feelings, or it wouldn't have happened. Minority groups, when they complain of injustice, just create more unfair treatment. Better not to complain about inequality or injustice. Not a positive vibration. Ever wonder why a tornado skips some houses? Good vibrations in there. Want to help a starving child in another country? Send her some "warm fuzzy" vibrations. Economic depression, high unemployment, discrimination, poor school systems -- none of these conditions matter -- only our vibrations. Forget politics, forget any action to change the world. If a company is pouring poisons into the water, don't complain about it, don't take action, rather imagine the water as clean, for this will be more effective. I am not exaggerating her views. Respect your life and soul, reject this thinking.

5-0 out of 5 stars The BEST I've ever read!!!!
This book, "Excuse me, your life is waiting" is the BEST book I have ever read on how to get the things in life that you want! Lynn takes what most people are taught, to think about what you want and be positive, one step further. Since I've been 'feeling' what I want, things are happening! I'm very pleased with my results!!!!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Tony Robbins Made The Difference!
Anybody who claims Tony Robbins's teachings contradict Christianity, or are only a temporary "high" are wrong. Tony's concepts changed my life, because I had the desire to do so. He showed my how to apply my desire to change and channel that energy. People who claim it didn't work for them, did not utilize the techniques fully, because they truely didn't want to change. Like physical excerise, mental exercise requires time, patients and a lot of work. Going to the gym once will not make you buff and trim, and reading a Tony Robbins' book once will not do the same for your mind. You have to apply the information over and over to get results. As for the contradiction to Christianity, well, I don't understand that claim. Tony's philososphies are rooted in the power of a supreme being wanting us to be happy and helping us. I am a strong Christian, and the instructions I recieved from Tony only helped me to serve my fellow man better.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great ideas on how to set goals.
First off, and I can't stress this enough, you must read the book. The audio is a great modivator and a good introduction, but the book is must. keep the audio for your car just for as a reminder, but read the book. Robbins can sound silly at times, but he's brillant when it comes to modivating you and ideas of how to make the most out of your life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good role model and beliefs
Anthony Robbins is the first person that I modeled that really changed my life for the better. Before him, I have read other books on psychology and self-improvement, but all those just ended up with lots of theories about things, but very little practical application in real life.

Robbins is the person who walks his talk. He takes what he learned and modelled from other masters like Jim Rohn, Robert Shuller, Richard Bandler, Milton Erickson, Robert Cialdini and many others, but he does something different and achieve far greater results than his teachers. The reason is that he takes all the techniques seriously and apply them faithfully to the n-th degree. Few of his very powerful beliefs he lives by that I have used to achieve impossible achievements are "There is ALWAYS a way, If I am committed to find one", "It is in the moments of your decisions that your destiny is shaped", "Manage your emotional states and you master your behaviours".

If you read about his story, he was 17 years old, broke and living in his VW car outside 7-11, and he joined Jim Rohn's company to start selling Rohn's educational sets. And he sold to every single person he made a sales appointment with, just by applying what he learned from Jim Rohn and others. Even Jim Rohn couldn't believe it, since nobody in the company could sell more than this 17 year old kid. And when he was broke, he set such goals as owning a castle home, big cars, being successful etc, and in 1 year he achieved them all, just by rehearsing and staying committed to his goals every day. And over the years, he achieved amazing redults just by applying the skills, beliefs, and techniques he learned. He proved to me that, if you are committed to your goals, values, and committed to doing the things you MUST do each day to be at your best,- then you can do seemingly amazing things even with simple techniques and beliefs.

This cassette is an additional companion to his book Awaken The Giant Within. Although the publisher produced this tape, which is about 60 - 90 minutes, some of the information and techniques in the book are not included here. But I love this tape as his delivery is very powerful and infectious. Get this tape, I guarantee it will help you, IF you apply them in your life. Don't be like most people who reads good books, and then say it's not good, just because they don't apply what they read. Reading and merely listening won't change your life. Applying it does! The world is filled with educated derelicts- people who know a lot of knowledge, but didn't use what they know.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not how to get rich
Funny thing about all of these motivational speakers... they're all rich. And that's one of things that makes us buy their stuff. Though they preach motivation and personal growth, the unsaid implication is that if we follow their lessons, we'll be rich, too.

Tony is no exception; he talks on this tape about how one year he was living in a tiny bachelor apartment, and a few years later he was living in a castle and flying his jet helicopter to his seminars.

But what none of these people ever talk about--including Tony--is HOW they got so wealthy. That would be a problem, since they tend to downplay the importance of money, all the while being paid millions of dollars to do so.

My hunch is that Tony makes his money by having people come to his seminars and buy his stuff. It's the same with financial guru Suze Orman--she hasn't made her money through smart investing; she's made it by writing books and doing a TV show telling us how to invest.

One of the secrets of making money is to find a niche and fill it; if you can't find one, then you invent one and convince people they need it. Arnold Schwarzenegger did this back in the 80's; he convinced people they were out of shape and came up with the whole "I'm going to pump you up" campaign. Tony, Peter Lowe, Zig Ziglar and others have done this with our minds: convinced us that we need to get control of our lives, and to let them tell us how to do it.

That's not to say Tony's stuff is a scam; if you're feeling out of sorts with the world, this tape is indeed a valuable help in focusing on how to get back with it. But for people who have a normal level of intelligence and presence of mind, it may be somewhat unsatisfying.

One thing I've learned is that sometimes the best advice someone can give you is to stop asking for advice! I think a fair number of Personal Power converts probably spend too much time and money going to seminars and studying Tony's stuff, and not enough time simply living their lives and making their own decisions. This tape is not going to tell you how to earn enough money to buy a helicopter or live in a castle. It is not going to tell you how to end up with a beautiful spouse and kids. It will tell you to follow your dream, and offers a few basic guidelines on how to do that. But you have to do the work.

N.B. The tape ends by telling us that by following Tony's advice, you'll attract the "appropriate coaches and role models." Sounds like a plug for Tony's personal coaching services. In other words, even after you've awakened your inner giant, you'll still need help! (Hint: you still need to buy more stuff!)

5-0 out of 5 stars This Joe Robbins Guy Is Incredible
A month ago I was washing my dishes in the bathtub, reusing junk mail envelopes, and buying frozen pizzas in bulk. Now I have grown a moustache and stride around confidently, feeling like I own the world. This Joe Robbins guy helps me forget the overwhelming impermanence of life, and the tragedy of focussing on personal wealth and contentment. I used to be be a Buddhist monk, but Joe helped me realize what a load of bunk that is. I can't wait to give him more money for his next book or tape or whatever! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What my daddy said.
When I was little my daddy would always say, "Cammy. There's three kind of people in this here world. Them's that makes things happen. Them's that watches things happen. And them's that wonders what the heck just happened. Make sure you're always them of first kind." That was good advice. Thanks, Dad.

I'm sure it was my daddy's philosophy that led me to this book. The ten golden rules, according to McGraw, are: (He calls them "life laws".)
#1: You either get it, or you don't. Become one of those who gets it.

#2: You create your own experience. Acknowledge and accept accountability for your life.

#3: People do what works. Identify the payoffs that drive your behavior and that of others.

#4: You cannot change what you do not acknowledge. Get real with yourself about your life and everybody in it.

#5: Life rewards action. Make careful decisions and then pull the trigger.

#6: There is no reality; only perception. Identify the filters through which you view the world.

#7: Life is managed; it is not cured. Learn to take charge of your life.

#8: We teach people how to treat us. Own, rather than complain about how people treat you.

#9: There is power in forgiveness. Open your eyes to what anger and resentment are doing to you.

#10: You have to name it before you can claim it. Get clear about what you want and take your turn.

As you can see my daddy was right on the money. For an uneducated man he was pretty dang smart.

Daddy said it. Lee Ann Womack sang it in her hit song "I Hope You Dance", "...And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance. Dance . . . I hope you dance." And now Phillip McGraw writes it. Be proactive, rather than reactive. A great book for anyone who is searching to take charge of their life. Cammy Diaz-Lawyer

5-0 out of 5 stars Ultimate Food for Thought
Each of us has the power to make those decisions which ultimately determine the course of our precious lives. We have the power of choice....a power that must be used wisely.

"Life Strategies" is one of those rare finds, a self-help book that does not wallow in big words or esoteric concepts. Mr. McGraw outlines his steps for success in life in simple, direct, yet engagingly written chapters. The organization of the book is excellent throughout and reflects an author who has had extensive experience in dealing with people from all walks of life. He deals with concepts such as self-reliance, individual responsibility and similar notions often downplayed (or ignored outright) by other authors seeking to play into the culture of victimization. You will find none of that in Mr. McGraw's book; his main theme is that we are responsible for our own lives and we do not have to allow ourselves to be knocked about like a punching bag on a windy day.

Once you pick up the book, it is difficult to put down; you will find yourself nodding your head at what you have always known in your heart, but do not always acknowledge in your daily life. This book is well worth the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not as easy as it looks on tv
Dr. Phil's life strategies seem easy, but they take a true commitment to implement. His advice makes some readers angry, but that is probably an indication that the message of the book is getting straight the the point. As Dr. Phil would say, "You either get it or you don't!" I also found Rat Race Relaxer: Your Potential & The Maza of Life by JoAnna Carey full of practical, easy to implement tips for getting what you want out of life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Get Real!!!!
This is a great audio book. Eventhough I had this book for years but I didn't read it until I got the audiobook. I enjoy Dr. Phil's texan accent!
There are somethings that I do not agree with, like everything that happens in life is your own responsibility, but generally it is a constructive book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Advice
The subtitle hints of the practicality of this book: "Doing what works/Doing what matters." Time is a key element in the process of accomplishing what you set out to do. Dr. Phil writes, "I design plans to help get people what they want in life."

There are some places in the book that are...shall we say they reveal things about him that he didn't intend. For example he's quite obsequious toward Oprah. Perhaps because she catapulted him to fame. On the other hand he's condescending to other people. He doesn't realize he comes across this way in the book, quite obviously. His arrogance is alarmingly apparent in places.

But there are some insights to be found in spite of these weaknesses. For example, he encourages you to "focus on results, not intentions." Do people ever need to hear that! A similar insight is found when he points out people fear rejection, but need acceptance. That means life is a risk.

I particularly liked this sieze windows of opportunity discussion in chapter six. Again time is the relevant variable, i.e., certain opportunities have a limited window. Sieze the day or miss the chance forever.

To sum it up, I felt the book started weak but grew in substance. After the self-promotion and sense of having all the answers in the first few pages were over he developed some substantive thought on significant issues. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars This psychotherapist highly recommends this book
As a psychotherapist, I highly recommend this book to any person who is experiencing general stress to full-blown panic attacks or agoraphobia. I have truly found this book to be a success in treating patients. It is easy to read and comprehend, full of examples and real-life success stories. The book provides excellent, proven techniques to help conquer anxiety, phobias, panic attacks, and agoraphobia. One of the most beneficial aspects to the book is that the author herself shares her struggle with panic disorder and agoraphobia and how she won her battle back to a healthy, relaxing life. She is able to teach us how to look within ourselves to see what is creating our fears and anxiety and how we can change these behaviors and thoughts to create a balanced mind and life. This book is truly a life saver and gives readers the hope and confidence they seek.

5-0 out of 5 stars from panic to power
Lucinda's book has been a new found source of life for me . Its shown me in many ways what i was going through i was not alone . She is truely a blessing to all who ever get the chance to read about her and her growth past stress and anxiety . For years i fought with my own self concious thinking i was odd or out of place , and couldnt figure out why i was the only one this was happening too . Then one evening while just brouseing the book store i found her book . and all i can say is , if you ever had a panic attack , or spent hours in the emergency room and they couldnt find a thing wrong . Or on some medicine for depression you should read this book . Thank you very much Lucinda for helping not only me but everyone you have touched see that life is great and theres so much out there is we just take that step on the other side of the wall .

1-0 out of 5 stars Same Old Useless Rhetoric
If you have a serious anxiety problem, you won't find help in this book.

First of all, the author seems to be more interested in telling her own story than addressing ways of overcoming anxiety, and her anxiety was minimal. She fusses about being afraid of taking a plane trip to Mexico with a boyfriend (while working full time). Anyone with truly severe anxiety isn't working full time and couldn't consider a trip out of the country.

Second, the author repeats herself over and over again.

Third, the information in this book is old. If you've read a book about anxiety during the past thirty-five years or so, you already know everything found here. Everything. There is nothing new.

I've had anxiety disorder since I was a child, and I'm now fifty-five years old. Because of a series of family losses, heart disease, and other recent traumas, I now also have Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

This book just added to my anxiety by irritating me with its sophomoric rhetoric.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some strong, positive focus phrases
Professionally I'm a very effective teacher, administrator and facilitator so I wasn't looking for setting goals of what I want to accomplish in that segment of my life. Lucinda encourages that. However I am just climbing up out about 3 years of life's extremes and in recent months panic attacks, which I've experienced during times of extreme stresses over the years, had returned full force. This book gave me some hand-holds to grab and has meant a great deal.

Lucinda's quote by Shakespeare led me to be able to name what I really was seeking....."My crown is content". CONTENTMENT. That in itself is a goal. If what I'm doing doesn't lead to contentment then it needs to be reassessed and possibly eliminated.

She also reinforced for me that *I* am my own place of safety and that "everything is alright EXACTLY AS IT IS". She led me to check my foundation and then to act on it. I am very grateful for finding this book right at this time.

5-0 out of 5 stars NO meds?
I run a panic website and it's proven that panic is hereditary. I've been researching this for years. Meds are necessary in most cases. I didn't totally agree with book, but I gave you high reviews anyway. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Multiple Mirrors to See Your Soul and Its Commitments!
Sacred Contracts engages you in an extensive, self-exploring expedition to unearth the core ingredients of your unique, spiritual identity. Because there are so many assignments to do in the book and it is so detailed, I suggest you get the hardcover version rather than one of the audio versions.

Of all the many books I have read about finding and following the dictates of your own true self, Sacred Contracts is by far the most unusual and detailed. The author calls upon major religious traditions, Eastern ideas about energy centers in the body, Jungian psychological archetypes, and astrology among other sources as context for seeing yourself as unique. Although few of these references are ones that I relate to very often, I was impressed by the way that they centered my focus by helping me see what life roles are not important in my life, as the contrast for seeing what is important. In my past experience with increasing self-understanding, the focus was on what was important. Cutting away the unimportant makes those important areas stand out much more clearly.

This is a book that can help you learn for the rest of your life. Unlike many books that are aimed at helping you find "the answer" and then getting you off working with "the answer," Sacred Contracts is designed to help with new challenges and issues in the future . . . as well as the ones you have today.

I found myself particularly enriched by reviewing the very long list of potential archetypes that are developed in the book. These are explained by stories of individuals, references to popular books and movies, and examples of how one archetype differs from other, similar ones. As a result, the archetypes and my own reactions to them came into much clearer focus in my mind. When I had read about these in Joseph Campbell's work, I often found them to be distant. Here, they are immediate.

Sacred Contracts focuses on "what is our mission in life?" This includes both "where am I going?" and "who will go with me?" The answer is unique for each person to each of these questions. A sacred contract is "your overall relationship to your personal . . . and spiritual power." The contract is "a plan to help you develop your divine potential." This is to fulfill "an agreement your soul makes before you are born." As I read these concepts, I found them to be most closely identified in my mind with the beliefs of Buddhism as they relate to the reincarnated soul. The author takes care to show that Judaism, Christianity, and Islam also contain these points of view.

The book contains a lot of material to help you absorb the context of these perspectives. In that sense, I felt a little like I was reading a condensed version of The Golden Bough.

After you understand the archetypes and their manifestations, you are directed how to engage in an extensive mental dialogue with and write about the positive and negative forms of each important archetype for you. These will include the four universal ones (child, victim, compromised person, and saboteur) as well as your selection from dozens of others for the ones that seem most important to you (such as addict, angel, bully, gambler, Midas, poet, and thief). For example, you will ask, "Why did I choose this archetype?" "In what way do I feel the archetype serves my Contracts with other people?"

The focus of all this remains on keeping "your attention on reaching your highest potential." To do this, you must "surrender to self."

Most people will find the list of what to think about and the exercises to do to be a bit intimidating. I certainly did. The work is based on a successful seminar that the author has been developing over many years. So it is intended to take quite a bit of time to do and implement. I suggest that you find blocks of time of at least two hours in length to work on these assignments when you will not be disturbed. If you are single, you might go someplace where you can be alone but see the splendor of nature. If you live with your family, early morning or late at night would probably be the best time . . . while others are at rest. Naturally, if you like what you read here, you could also consider doing a seminar with the author. I'm assuming that that is much more expensive than working with this book on your own. Some people might find it helpful to find someone to do this with, so that you share your results with one another. This could help provide the discipline to keep working on discovering your sacred contracts.

May you fulfill your highest purpose in ways that bring great joy and benefit to you and all whom you meet! God bless you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Sacred Contracts is a brilliant!
Sacred Contracts is a brilliant synthesis of spiritual insight and psychology. Presumably based on the author's well known workshops of the same name. Sacred Contracts takes Jung's concept of archetypes beyond anything Jung himself might have imagined and brings the notion squarely into the 21st century.
The author developed an enjoyable and ingenious process for deciphering your own Contract using a new theory of archetypes that builds on the works of Jung, Plato, and contemporary thinkers. This book is genuinely transformative in understanding the why and what of your inner self.

I bought the audio version after reading the written version. Really use both. When I work I use Neurosync behavior modification software to make other improvements. I enjoy self improvement and self enlightenment and I highly recommend both the book and audio versions.

5-0 out of 5 stars Feeling at home with yourself.
I found Caroline Myss' "SACRED CONTRACTS" to be a warm and insightful guide to investigating one's purpose in life. Myss writes with a great generosity of heart. She describes her book as "a product of my wanting to share with people my insights about our individual and collective life purpose over nearly two decades of working with the energies of the human spirit." Myss explores the idea of archetypes, or energies, that are aspects of our personalities intricately involved in the fulfilling of our purposes.

The book functions as a guide to help you identify the key archetypes in your life, so that rather than getting lost in the drama of your life, you can step back and experience yourself as more centered in the big picture. The tone is light and often playful, and Myss sprinkles her discussions with many gems, such as: "real creativity is based on a solid foundation of knowledge and discipline." Her chapter on the "Wizard of Oz" as a symbol of personal transformation is moving and mesmerizing. I had never considered the difference Dorothy made to the lives of the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion before I read this chapter. Myss repeatedly underlines the importance of living in the moment: "Fulfilling your highest potential actually means acting on your highest or deepest truth each moment of your life." As an excellent companion book on your road to personal growth, I strongly recommend "WORKING ON YOURSELF DOESN'T WORK" by Ariel and Shya Kane. (Their audio CD's and tapes are brilliant as well.) This simple and practical book is an indispensable guide to living fully in the moment and discovering joy and satisfaction with a consistency beyond your wildest imagination.

1-0 out of 5 stars dizzying
I have been on a spiritual path for 20 years, and agree that a certain amount of self-discovery is necessary. However, this convoluted, complicated book encourages a level of introspection that can not be healthy. I can't imagine anyone taking this book seriously as coming away anything but self-absorbed, with no real interest in other people, as they have found themselves so archetypically interesting.
A great investment for true narcissists!

5-0 out of 5 stars Life Altering
This is the first book I have ever read that even comes close to explaining what I believe the afterlife to be, or rather the beginning of life on earth. Except for a few minor differences this is right on. Have you ever heard things that you know the meaning of the words, but until someone enlightens you the meaning of the words is missed. This book turned on the light in my head about sooooo many things, that it is hard to believe. Enlightenment comes in slow subsets, and this book has connected many subsets for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success"---- " revisited"
Knowing how to be spiritual is going to be our quest, for our future understanding depends on it. It's going back to our roots so to speak...from where we came...remember? If "Healing Society" by Dr Seung Heun Lee requests a spiritual awakening to accomplish our goal of "playing well together" to accomplish our higher purpose of peace on earth... who better than a wise and compassionate teacher, we know as Deepak Chopra, to tell and show us how to be this? Deepak generously leads us to a beautiful place where all we have to do is "be." Spirit is what we are... and love is who we are... and where we come from and then return to. What more can we desire? Maybe to revisit that perfect state from which we came, perhaps? Maybe everything is possible and simple. Maybe we should return to our innocence. In innocence we are fearless in our thoughts and actions...totally in tune with our inner self. Let's be beautiful spirit shared from our hearts where God lives. Read or reread "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success" A Practical Guide to the Fulfillment of your Dreams and Deepak will give you the gift of your inner you...your "self"...dare to be beautiful!

This is a must read for anyone wishing to find true inner peace and happiness. I wish I found this book 20 years ago! Read it every day and make it a fundamental part of your life. Self fulfillment will come when you practice the "Seven Spiritual Laws of Succcess". This book truly illuminates the heart, soul and mind

5-0 out of 5 stars "This existence of ours is as transient as autumn clouds."
It is always nice to find someone out there that thinks the same way you do, however express it much better.

In "The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success", by Deepak Chopra, he describes the fundamental principles of the universe and how we as part of the universe can be successful. Throughout the book he has to slow sown and explain how he is using many of the words as we usually give them different meaning. Then there are a few times that he has to turn to Indian words instead of making up new ones. Many say he is based in Ancient Vedic concepts yet if you did not know of them you would relies these are concepts of the now.

He hits the deck running with this book so if you have not been exposed to these concepts before you may need to re-read the book several times. And this book was not meant to jus be read you need to practice the concepts to understand them. This book is based on "Creating Affluence" and does not have the size to contain a lot of background reasoning for drawing conclusions. Your practice off the laws will do that for you.

The concepts are too simple to give the titles any meaning however here they are.
1. The Law of Pure
The source of all creation is pure consciousness...
2. The Law of Giving
The universe operates through dynamic exchange...
3. The Law of "Karma" or Cause and Effect
Every action generates a force of energy that returns to us in like kind...
4. The Law of Least Effort
Nature's intelligence functions with effortless ease...

5. The Law of Intention and Desire
Inherent in every intention and desire is the mechanics for its fulfillment...
6. The law of Detachment
In detachment lies the wisdom of uncertainty...
7. The law of "Dharma" or Purpose in life
Everyone has a purpose in life...

On a personal note it is so eerie that many of the things he talks about especially in the seventh law was the way me ad my siblings were raised. However I was 20 years old before cutting throw my first Veda

Be sure to also listen to the audio to here how he emphasizes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Applying these laws has helped many...
...myself included.

I first read this book about 4 or 5 years ago when I began my journey towards discovering my Higher Self. This book is a great read no matter what religion (if any) you belong to. Honestly, the fundamental laws that lead to success in the game of life along all lines--health, wealth, peace of mind, love/relationships and true expression--are very simple but few of us are lucky to happen upon them. Then, for those who do, applying these laws consistently is something that even fewer of us do.

My favorite nugget of wisdom from this book is the follow:
"That which doesn't multiply through giving is neither worth giving nor receiving." (pg. 30)

I try to keep this insightful idea in mind when I consider not only finanacial and material concerns but my relationships and interactions with people as well.

I have read 3 of the author's books and this one is thus far my favorite.

4-0 out of 5 stars Spiritual Laws Made simple
Chopra has manage once again to bring a lot of Eastern Philosophy to the west with a certain simplicity. He makes it easier to follow these principles in our everyday lives.Spirituality is everyday living and This book allows us to practice that!

4-0 out of 5 stars A book about biographies, especially one's own
This book is as much about the search for character and calling as it is an elucidation of Hillman's neo-Jungian/neo-Platonist theory of psychology, termed the 'acron' theory. It is a very readable book, with a lot of biographical anecdotes from the lives of such a broad spectrum of famous personages as Churchill, Josephine Baker, and Yehudi Manheim. Because of this it is a joy to read, and succeeds in invoking a sense of one's own life story as an unfolding drama. One, moreover, that is seperate from the individual ego, and demands its outward manifestation at all costs. This is a well crafted book, and although sometimes quite theoretical, it never loses touch with the beauty of the biographical stories it invokes, and, in a larger sense, the drama of the individual soul desperate to bring its given talent into fruition. If you've never read Hillman this is a very good place to start. You won't be disappointed.

5-0 out of 5 stars a refreshing antidote to reductionist, mainstream psychology
I am on my second reading of this book, having read it once a couple of years ago and let the ideas percolate in the back of my mind. It is one of the most liberating books I have ever read. As an adult survivor of child abuse, I was in therapy for over 16 years and never felt that mainstream psychologists have any idea of just how powerful our soul's nature is. A system of healing which leaves out our spiritual energies-- and our ability to transform our realities into the stuff of myth--is an impotent system, at least if you are someone whose roots run very deep. I made little progress in my own healing until I began working on the spiritual and soul aspects of my life. Hillman writes that we are not as shaped by the horrors of our early upbringing as we are told by psychotherapists. What an inspiration for transcending the past! Unlike authors such as Carolyn Myss, he offers this teaching in a way that does not blame people for their anger about the past. He simply offers a way beyond the anger and other self-imposed limits, cheerfully and graciously. The detractors of this book state that it is not scientific enough. Of course it is not scientific--it's about bringing the energies of the invisible into your life. You don't have to do reductionist studies of the principles involved to have them change your way of thinking about yourself... I recommend this book to anyone who is tired of the dry, sterile approach to healing offered by professional counselors who have not themselves explored the "realms beyond" and therefore cannot teach us how to experience them for our benefit.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a superb Book!
If your searching for something, looking for some direction, feel lost or depressed, this is a great book to read. It really provides a context from which to view you life from and COULD be all you need to get you back in the groove.

One does not have to agree with everything James Hillman covers in this study of character as vocation. I found the chapter on "The Bad Seed" particularly iffy; it seems as if imaginal psychology has not yet found a way to explain creatures like Hitler, to whom the epithet "human" hardly applies, or the fatal attraction they exert on others (read Elias Cannetti's "Crowds and Power" for that). However, I have always found his books challenging in that they shake one's most profound beliefs and prejudices about the nature of the psyche. And, given the current prevalence of "victim theory," it is absolutely necessary to have someone remind us that we have a free will, that the soul is sovereign, and that we cannot go around blaming fate, God, the devil or society for the negative aspects of our lives. I found that message in the Seth books by Jane Roberts many years ago. All in all, an important book for those who have left Freudian and Lacanian systems of thought, and have accepted imagination as the soul's predominant mode of knowledge.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good ideas, bad execution
I was ready to like what Hillman had to say. The idea that we each have a calling -- some marriage of talent, interest and drive toward a specific destiny -- appeals to me. In fact, I liked many of Hillman's concepts (importance of beauty, the parental fallacy, over-medication of our youth, abandoning the 'invisibles,' having a vision for your children).

However, the execution was attrocious. Whenever I knew anything about the studies that Hillman was quoting, I found them to be twisted out of context. I showed the section on beauty to a friend who is writing a dissertation on aesthetics, and he (my friend) pointed out a number of mistakes. (For instance, Hillman quotes Thomas Aquinas saying that beauty arrests motion. What Aquinas actually says is that it is impossible to see true beauty in the world. He says that pure beauty is only present in God, the unmoved mover. So, while to see God would be to see a lack of motion, Hillman is really stretching Aquinas's words to use this philosphy to say that taking time for beautiful things would slow down our fast-paced lives and bring us inner peace.)

Also, I wanted more detail for some of his ideas. He never really tells us how to grow down or "feed" our individual daimon. In the final analysis, I would have liked better research, more focus on how to implement his principles, and perhaps less sarcasm about any other theory that doesn't agree with his. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars One of The Best ! !
Dr. Phil's "Ultimate Weight Solution" is one of the best weight loss books I've read in a long time. I'm giving this book four stars because weight loss should encompass the full gamut of an individual including spirit, soul, and body. Dr. Phil covers the soul and body beautifully, but neglects the spiritual aspects of weight loss.

Keys one and two deal with the soul which is our thoughts, will, and emotions. Keys 3-6 deal with the body and flesh, and key 7 deals with the soul. It is critical to include the missing spiritual aspect of a complete weight loss program.

Dr. Phil does an excellent job of dealing with the seven keys included in this book. There are lots of nuggets to glean from.

Two of my many favorite golden nuggets of truth in this book are:

1. "If you believe with utmost certainty that you will fail and never, ever, be able to manage your weight, then failure is what your personal truth dictates to you." Pg 11

2. "When you weight train, its like taking a little chisel to your body. Off comes blubbery thigh fat, gone is the jiggly butt. There's muscular definition to your arms you never knew you had. You're firm all over, and smaller, and better proportioned too." Pg 222

The inclusion of the questionnaires such as the "Nutritional Assessment," the "Behavioral Audit," and the "Personal Environment Audit" are powerful ways of getting the reader to personalize this book and their own personal weight loss program. The interaction leads people to draw closer to the words on the pages and to internalize the keys.

There is so much good material in this book that I really wanted to include a dozen nuggets of truth, but you'll just have to read it yourself and pick out your own favorite nuggets.

I thank Dr. Phil for writing this book. It was a combination of this book coupled with his Monday television program that motivated me to get started on my own weight loss journey.

Thank you Dr. Phil!

5-0 out of 5 stars Hello, this book is about reality (self help not diet)
I can not believe the negativity of some of these reviews. Dr. Phil may not be super thin but the book is about a get real weight not a doctor's chart weight. It is the pursuit of the model thin body that has contributed to both obesity and eating disorders in this country. I do not think that Dr Phil is fat. I think that he is about average for a man of his age (remember televison adds weight). Anyone picking on Dr. Phil's weight is part of the problem ( it really is OK not to look like a super model in this country, it doesn't make you worth less) Also, so what if he is a psychologist and not a psychiatrist. That just means in private practice he would not prescribe meds. It does not mean he is not qualified to talk about the psychological issues surrounding permanent weight loss. Anyone questioning the qualifications of Dr. Phil are just jealous of the impact he has on people.

So it is not brain surgery. Have you ever been to a psychiatrist? They always shift the focus back on you. You ask why do I do that, they say, I don't know why do you?. Because for permanent change the self control and motivation must come from you. This book tackles the fact that we are eating emotionally not just for sustenance as we should be. It tries to resolve some of these issues if not at least bring them out into the open. It has several excercises for this. We all know that to lose weight we must eat less than we need for energy. The real question is why don't we? What is the emotional reason that you as an individual keep overeating? This is the first diet book that tackles overeating from a psychological perspective. Perhaps people would feel like they got their money's worth if the book said to stand on your head 10 minutes after eating and eat as much as you want. That would be new wouldn't it?

Dr. Phil talks in a plain and simple language that really appeals to his fans. IN both self matters and this book he puts things in such a way that it cuts through the bull. If you don't like Dr Phil's style, you won't like the book. Since the book has sold 7 million copies so far he has an opportunity to make a real impact on the weight loss problem in this country. Imagine that !! Millions of overweight americans finally looking inside themselves and saying, "I am the one making the decision to be fat. I do it for the following reasons. I can change my mind and live a healthier lifestyle". "It is not because I ate a bread product with a piece of fruit and messed up a combination or magical formula, It is because I eat more than I need to, to survive. This is not normal and thanks to Dr. Phil I have an action plan to change my behavior." It puts control back in the hands of the individual. Simple or not, if he can get that message across and through his star power effect change, all the more power to him.

1-0 out of 5 stars He's good at stating the obvious. That's about it.
Why is Dr. Phil popular? Because he tells people what they already know. He just throws a few "I'm a good ol' down-to-earth no-nonsense Texan" sayings into the mix.
I bought this book because I was a huge fan of Dr. Phil. I watched his show, bought his "Relationship Rescue" and his Food Guide, and I was ready to overhaul my life just like he said. I started into the book, made goals and worked hard, and followed his food guide implicitly. He said I wouldn't be hungry. I was. He said the plan wouldn't be restrictive. It was. After the first days of excitement were over, I was miserable.
This book is all about telling you to work hard at losing weight, which I am all for. But then he tells you it's not about will power. Of course it is! It's not only about will power, but you do have to have some self-control in order to reach your goals.
This book is a paradoxical mixture of in-your-face drill sargent with telling 'em what they wanna hear.
Let's just say that the more I see Dr. Phil's milk-mustached face on billboards and watch his appearances on the likes of "Extreme Makeover", the more I start to doubt his sincerity about helping people and suspect him of milking his popularity for every penny he can.

4-0 out of 5 stars at last............
What Dr. Phil's book plainly and simply points to is that there is no quick fix to weight loss.
One person wrote about how scary it is that Dr. Phil's book content is common sense. Yes it is and it is high time someone put it in blunt, plain language.
The trouble is the diet industry has been harping on easy loss forever and loves to woo the mentality "I lost 15 pounds in one week!". If you lost 15 pounds in 7 days, it is NOT fat, it is fluid, and more troubling, lean tissue, something that no one can afford to lose. It is called starvation in many sectors of the world.
You simply cannot fool the body. If it does not get what it needs it cannibalizing itself to get it.
The diet industry also makes us believe in 'dieting' not in making behavior changes for a lifetime in what we eat and how much time we spend moving our bodies. When we diet we think about when it is all off I can let up. Well they are wrong. It is a lifetime of effort and Dr. Phil let's his reader know that.
I am perfectly happy with the thought that finally someone has had the intestinal fortitude to spell it out plainly how much we have been duped by the 'diet' industry.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changed my life!!!!
Most people think I'm crazy when I tell them that this book has changed my life, but it has. My eating habits have completely changed and I'm not even finished reading the book. I have lost 6 pounds in about 2 weeks. The book doesn't make you lose weight. It's the information inside that gives you the tools to lose the weight. I strongly suggest that anyone buy it. I bought it at a store full price and was a little leary of spending the money, but it was WELL WORTH IT! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars This book turned a practical person into a creative one
This book has completely changed my perspective about my creative ability. At first my practical side felt very silly doing some of the exercises. But after a while a began to realize how much better I felt about myself and my ability to be creative... not do everything by the book. I began oil painting, which I've even entered into contests. I went to Professional Culinary School, in spite of everyone telling me I was crazy. Now those same people are envious of my ability and attitude to discover something that makes me happy and actually pursue it. So many people dream, but never act on those dreams. As practical as I am and probably always will be, thanks to this book, I'm happy that I'm taking these steps toward self fullfillment, and I've established a balance in my life I have never previously experienced. My only criticism is all of the references to God. I'm not athiest, however I feel strongly that the motivation comes from a higher power within yourself and is in your control, and should not be limited to an association with a particular religious figure. Not everyone believes in God, like another individual has written in this review section. I could see how the constant references could turn someone off. But if you look past that element of the book there are some real powerful tools that can help anyone become a more creative individual. The religious connotations are not really necessary. If you can keep that in perspective, then I highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Release your creativity
There are only two books I recommend artists of any kind to read, Natalie Goldberd "Writing Down the Bones", and this book by Julia Cameron. I have read more how-to creativity/writing/journaling/artist books than my poor shelves can hold. I stopped buying them after this book.

I'm an avid journal keeper, it helps me free my mind. There are times, however, when my mind wants to remain locked. This book, complete with freeing exercises, changed all that. I keep the morning pages every day now and have little trouble with my creativity. This book was a god-send to a generation who finally realized that all things in life require some creativity and that unlocking it is the key to a healthy, fullfilled, and well-lived life.

I cannot recommend this book enough. I also recommend the companion "Morning Pages Journal", but only if you aren't sure where to begin. If you are certain you can pick up a blank notebook and begin following the advice she gives, then the journal isn't really necessary.

This is the book that every artist and journaler needs.

1-0 out of 5 stars The Artists Detour
This is one of those rare books that just tries to adress everything; creativity, spiritualty, pop psychology, twelve step program views, and the kitchen sink. It is about everything and ultimately about nothing. It reders the reader at odds with himself rather than provide a "path." It is actually counterproductive.

A truly ghastly book.

1-0 out of 5 stars I thought I was the only one unimpressed
Thank Goodness there is an objective review of this book that doesn't consider it the new bible for artists. About a year ago my professor recommended this book to me. I dutifully struggled with the first few chapters, reading about supposed case histories of others who miraculously found themselves and God with the author's assistance. However, as a working artist, (generally about 16 hours a day), my time must be spent productively. Inspiration can be found in raindrops, fresh air, flower petals, insects, sunshine, snowflakes, and all of God's creations. Instead of writing a journal in the morning, I suggest working seriously at whatever "art" the person aspires to: story writing, painting, music. Explore the art, if nothing else, and inspiration will come if it is supposed to. The original "Bible" is still the best spiritual guide and not a book obviously padded with worthless "case histories" that may have been invented by the author.
Remember the child who bravely pointed out "The Emperor has no clothes?" Be advised, this book has no substance. I wish I had glanced at it in a bookstore before wasting my money.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book changed my whole life
I was an unfulfilled woman before this book. My life had a constant sadness flowing though the everyday. Some one bought me this book as a present and it took me a year till I opened it. I don't mean to be extreme but this was like the Bible to my artistic true self. I have referred to it since over and over and have recommended it to so many people. My favorite quote from the book is "leap and the net will appear". Also, I love the one that talks about the woman who asks how old she will be when she can finally play the piano well and the answer was- "the same age you would be had you not ever learned".
That struck such a chord for me. I was in my late 20's at the time thinking that I had made all my choices all ready, and was stuck with them. As Oprah would say, that was my "Aha" moment.

As a result of the book I changed my group of friends because I realizes they were not there to help push me up and forward.
I bought singing lessons on CD- "Voice Lessons To GO", by Vaccarino (excellent) because I just always have wanted to be able to sing.
I did a Berlitz language course in Italian and spent a summer there after taking an art class.
I found an excellent husband with my newly-empowered self. We even bought "New Sex Now Video" and have explored the gamut- because I am worth it.
And in general, I have happiness now flowing through my days instead of sadness.
Morning pages have brought me clarity.
There is another quote I like from the real bible, "If I am not for myself, who will be for me? If not now, when? ... Read more

This audiocassette helped me realize that conflict in relationships is normal, and that every relationship goes through bad times. It's geared toward heterosexual relationships which I didn't like in the beginning but the content when she does get to the meat of it is worth it!

It helps you step outside yourself, see what's going on and what outside influences are present that we are not even aware of. It gives you hope when you think all there is are arguments and malicious intent from your partner. When it's really connected to everything and is changeable!

5-0 out of 5 stars This is a must for any woman going through a crisis.
I first heard of Alice Domar and the Harvard Mind-Body Institute's Infertility Program in an article which highlighted a research study that found that infertile women who underwent a relaxation program had a higher rate of pregnancy than a control group. Living nowhere near Boston, I was very interested to discover that Dr. Domar had written a book. The book is wonderful and I recommend it to people going through infertility all of the time. I am not one to go for touchy-feely stuff, and this is not at all like that. Rather, it is a down to earth, medically-based, normal, and intelligent approach to getting our lives together. It is a very important companion to anyone undergoing infertility treatment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Not Just for Infertility
This book was recommended to me last spring by members of my infertility support group. I love this book! It was the first book to acknowledge the amount of stress, pain and depression infertile women go through. I use the relaxation techniques not just for infertility, but for every crisis in my life. The advice is practical, simple, and easy to use throughout the day. And it does seem as if the book was written just for me! The audio tapes are helpful as well. The book is a true gift. I just donated a copy to a friend going through infertility, with the stern instruction that I wanted it back. Of the 5 books I gave her, this was the only one that's on loan!

5-0 out of 5 stars It helped me get pregnant and stay that way!
After 2 miscarriages (on Clomid) I was a wreck. A friend gave me this book and without Clomid I got pregnant and delivered a healty happy boy. We're now pregnant again with #2 (another boy!) and I have re-read 2 of her chapters at least 25 times each. I wish I could meet Alice and tell her what a life changing book this was for me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Overcoming Infertility
I read this book at a time in my life when I was faced with infertility problems. My husband and I had tried for two years to become pregnant and even sought the advise of a specialist. I found this book and started reading the section on inferility and the stresses related to it. I found myself totally imerged in it. At times I would sit there and cry because I felt that it was weritten for me. That was two years ago. We now have a beautiful 10 month old daughter and are so very thankful for the written advise. I have recommended this to many relatives and friends.

5-0 out of 5 stars i believe i got pregnant because of this book!
i wrote the previous review. i would just like to add how valuable this book has been to me. when i read "healing mind, healthy woman", i was struggling with over 3 years of secondary infertility. as soon as i began the relaxation exercises, i noticed an improvement in my life immediately. i was more calm and more patient with my daughter and husband. the writing exercises allowed me to recognize how i had been blaming & punishing myself, until i finally forgave myself enough to get the treatment that i needed and deserved. my fertility treatment has less than 50% success rate, but i am now pregnant after just 1 cycle! and i didn't experience any side effects from the drugs involved, even though most women reported having them. i credit the skills i learned in this book for enabling me to be at my healthiest and therefore increasing the effectivity of my treatment. i would definitely recommend this book to all women, not just those with health problems. i will continue to use the skills i learned to ensure that i have a healthy & happy pregnancy. thank you very much, ms. alice domar & mr. henry dreher, for changing my life. i wish i could have written to you both directly. i hope you will get to read this review. ... Book Description

In her most provocative book yet, Dr. Laura urgently reminds women that to take proper care of their husbands is to ensure themselves the happiness and satisfaction they yearn for in marriage.

Women want to be in love, get married, and live happily ever after. Yet disrespect for men and disregard for the value, feelings, and needs of husbands has fast become the standard for male-female relations in America. Those two attitudes clash in unfortunate ways to create struggle and strife in what could be a beautiful relationship.

Countless women call Dr. Laura, unhappy in their marriages and seemingly at a loss to understand the power they have over their men to create the kind of home life they yearn for. Now, in The Proper Care and Feeding of Husbands, Dr. Laura shows you how to wield that power to attain all the sexual pleasure, intimacy, love, joy, and peace you want in your life. With real-life examples -- and real-life solutions -- Dr. Laura’s simple principles have changed the lives of millions. Now they can change yours.

4-0 out of 5 stars Men Are Simple Creatures, All They Need Is ...
In this book, Dr. Laura presents what could be called the "Contemporary Theory of Husbands." She tries to encourage women to cast off the influence of the feminist movement which has fostered feelings that have allowed women to use their time in non-productive men-bashing, rather than in trying to analyze what they really want, and how to get it.

Dr. Laura states the following, "Remember, men are simple creatures and very dependent on their wives for acceptance, approval and affection." Her basic theory being, that if men get that from their wives, their wives will get back many fold, what they give. And also, Dr. Laura wishes that woman would analyze carefully what they have because of their husbands and what they want out of life, and make the decision based on those factors.

While her theory is surely not neo-Freudian or neo-Jungian, it has a very high potential to work in present day marital situations. She stresses the need for honest and meaningful communication. And she tries to point out the reality, that a successful marriage is hard work, and both partners have responsibilities within the relationship.

Dr. Laura simplifies a lot of the problems and answers, but unlike test data in a lab, Dr. Laura's evidence actually comes from empirical field data by helping real people sort these things out on her radio show, and through letters and her other activities.

It should be clearly stated, that Dr. Laura does NOT advocate being a stay at home mom, but she does advocate the concept that women are more responsible for child rearing than men. In addition, she states that the woman should have more responsibility in a marriage than a man, to provide the things that the man wants, and to be the leader in productive and meaningful communication. This is arguable. Both parties really have some responsibility to this in a marital relationship.

I found Dr. Laura's commentary on embryology and "hard wired" genetic differences between men and women, which start at about 8 weeks into gestation in the womb. There is considerable evidence to suggest, that all of us, are born with both male and female "hard-wiring" but the hard wiring that is expressed, is that which is activiated by the particular hormonal mix running through the veins of the specific person. Thus, it has been shown in hundreds or animal studies and now, with transexuality, that if one changes the hormonal balance, that an animal will act in normal programmed ways as would the opposite sex, and that really it is the hormones that control the "hard-wiring" that is selected and displayed, not so much the physical equipment.

Dr. Laura addresses some other highly relevant subjects in her book, perhaps the most important of which in marriage are the issues of "sex" and "guy time." She does a wonderful job of exploring this with support of her listeners conversations and letters.

If there is anything at all that Dr. Laura could have done a little better at, was that I think she went slightly overboard on the concept of "repition brings remembrance." Her book often goes over the same point or concept in multiple places. But I know, that this was intentionally done by Dr. Laura.

In all, the book is a wonderful book for both men and women, as it helps both understand the other, and work at productive and happy marriages.

5-0 out of 5 stars Dr. Laura sparks a needed debate
Dr. Laura's new book is an irrefutable home run on modern relationships. Like any other book, it won't save your marriage or make you a better person. Self-help books either preach to the choir or fly above heads, depending on the reader. And I expect that it will do the latter with most women. That, I think, is exactly the point.

For the first time ever a mainstream book takes an honest look at the dark side of things feminine. It is a long overdue examination that forces us past the taboo of saying anything critical about women. Women, just like men, DO have a dark side. In western culture that dark side is reflected in many women's sense of entitlement, arrogance and selfishly driven behavior, even in an area of their lives that should be characterized by giving, respect and the pursuit of intimacy.

The subject material of her book, even on this list of reviews, has elicited powerful feelings on both sides. And this is where she succeeds, regardless of the books efficacy for it's intended purpose. Some of the reviews drip with vitriol and the very loathing of men that Dr. Laura cautions us against. How DARE Dr. Laura imply that women are any less than perfect?! Who is she to say that healthy relationships require women to act like accountable, feeling and sensitive adults?!

Personally, I think Dr. Laura has a great deal of wisdom, but it is wasted on women who have grown far too comfortable with blaming every negative thing in their lives on men.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good information
Having been through two divorces I have a bit of experience in the failed marriage business and I read this book with interest to see if I spotted any similarities between the authors advice to married women and the behaviors I experienced in my bad marriages. Spot on. Bingo. It's here. I give the book a strong recommendation to any looking to strengthen their marriage or to any planning on getting married.

It's easy for some to vilify Dr. Laura but if you (as a woman) have ever been successfully married you've either followed her advice or you weren't all that happily married (or at least your husband was miserable). She makes it very clear that the book isn't written for relationships that are abusive and that in normal non-abusive relationships men are actually very similar and pretty much want the same things in their marriages: the respect of their wives, lots of physical intimacy and a good home from their children.

As for the overall quality of the book and the writing, I'd say it's about average. It is a short book and a lot of it is filler, quotes, examples and stories. I read it in a few hours and did find it entertaining as well as informative. In defense of the authors style and the length of the book, I'd like to point out that to help the average person, a book can't be to long and complicated, it simply won't get read, so overall, I'd not say the length and style are a detriment. My biggest complaint was that it simply ended, there wasn't a conclusion or final chapter, the last chapter was just the last chapter.

As for those people, women or men, that can't stand the idea of a wife respecting and honoring her husband, loving him and caring for him, it's fine if you feel that way as a single person but you're setting yourself up for a failed marriage if you think somehow you're so special that the laws of human nature and the spirit of man are somehow unique in your situation. They aren't. I highly highly recommend this book to anyone that's engaged or thinking about it. If you think the book is bunk, don't get marriage yet, at least not to a man...

5-0 out of 5 stars Great title, great book!
This is an easy to read, easy to implement guide for women who want a great relationship. Dr. Laura draws from the letters and call-ins she receives on her radio show and the book is full of quotes of these letters and dialogues she had with listeners. And it is easy to recognize yourself in those people?

Dr. Laura's advice is really simple: Take responsibility for your relationship, realize the power you have and use it wisely. Make your husband your number one priority and the rewards will be manifold. It almost sounds too simple, but the many examples in the book provide clear support that this works and why.

The book illustrates how many women have fallen into the feminist trap of demanding "to have it all" without realizing the price they pay for pursuing too many things, for ignoring their husbands for the sake of their career, or for reducing their husband to a tool to support their dreams, rather than creating and maintaining a true partnership that feeds both of them.

One warning: Dr. Laura is a strong advocate of the traditional marriage with a stay-at-home wife and children. So it is easy for any woman who does not fall into that pattern to ignore what she says. That would be a shame. The essence of her book remains true, no matter what your personal circumstances are: Focus on your husband's needs rather than have all attention on yourself, give instead of demanding to receive, and your partnership will fly.

Another book that I have found extremely insprirational and insightful is "Working on your Relationship Doesn't Work" by Ariel and Shya Kane. They have a refreshing new perspective on how heretofore unidentified influences in our environment, if they go unrecognized, can destroy our relationships and how you can nurture and grow your relationships ? with your partner, yourself, co-workers, friends, family ? in a way that doesn?t take time or effort and allows magic to unfold. They suggest that the mere seeing of things allow them to transform, without working on them. What a relief? and worth trying!

I don't know one person in the world who won't date his moments of greatest happiness to the time his family was the most intact, whole, unshakable. To me, this book (despite its mildly salacious title) was about that subtle nuance of marriages that guides life to be fitted around duty and responsibility, rather than around the pursuit of that elusive straw man, happiness. It nearly makes one wish that there was someone a bit more hip and compelling than the author of this book standing up for this simple hardhitting truth, because the point is compelling. Regardless of its title or whatever polarized commentary you hear about its contents, this book is a very worthy skim. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Uplifting Tribute to our Animal Friends
Anyone who knows me knows that I am a sucker for a good animal story. If it's happy, I cry; if it's sad, I cry harder. Animal abuse distresses me almost more than anything else.

One of my pleasures is to pick up every book I can on animals and the psychic realm. The books that focus on our intimate connections to the animal kingdom and how we may communicate with them through our intuitive thoughts and feelings are books to not only to learn from, but to savor.

I remember that pioneer in the field, Beatrice Lydecker, whose book was revolutionary when it came out years ago. It was "What the Animals Tell Me", and I was thrilled this work was available to us. The fact that there are so many books about this subject on the market now testifies to the fact that as a people we are really ready to hear the wisdom and love that animals offer. They are not just a food source or slave labor to us any longer.

Ms. McElroy does a beautiful job of bringing forth her message of healing the relationship between people and animals. She comes from a most compassionate, wise place in her understanding of why animals are with us as our companions.

If you want an example of unconditional love, be in the presence of a beloved pet. Never have I, in my life, ever received even close to that level of unconditional love and acceptance that my animal companions have shown me. [Particularly my recently deceased, Francis, who was a very evolved being inhabiting a humble life form. I am planning a future book on this soul.]

Animals are helping us evolve to the realization of our Oneness universe. We are taught by them that there is no separation between us and them. They feel what we feel. They see the spiral of life and death as part of the Wholeness of life.

The author goes into several different topics: animals as guides or guardians, healers, in the dream state or shamanic state, and through the death process. There is no dead weight in this book---all is riveting, and should be read more than once through.

Most highly recommended.

This is the Best book that I have read and I have read quite a few books. I purchased this book in a train station in Washington, DC because I had a long time between trains returning to Pittsburgh from North Carolina. After I started reading this book, I could not stop. I read most of it in the train station and finished it when I arrived home. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the various stories about the animals. When I read some stories, I cried because of what happened to the animals. In some of the stories, animals risked their own lives to save a human life. I love animals very much and for anyone who loves animals, this is the book to read. The author, Susan Chernak McElroy is an exceptional writer and I would purchase any book she writes.

5-0 out of 5 stars A beautiful tribute to animals
Susan McElroy has put together a most memorable book. It expresses the beautiful relationships and experiences people have had with animals in a way that deeply touches the heart. I could not read this book with a dry eye. Having grown up with many animals, I have long been an animal lover. Reading about the moving experiences that others have had with animals confirmed the feeling that I have often had that we are connected with them on a deeper than conscious level. This book accords animals the honor they deserve.

As an avid animal lover, I found Susan Chernok McElroy's book to be none other than touching and heartfelt. The material she used for her writings was a great teacher and healer in of itself for me, the reader.Every story leapt off the page and affected me deeply, evoking any number of a myriad of emotions ... joy, sorrow, relief, suspense, laughter. When I finished the book (which I did quickly), I felt more inspired than I had in a long time to make the earth's animal kingdom a greater and more important part of my life, whether by working for its welfare/well-being, or simply by giving my own pets more of the love they need and deserve!I plan to give this book to every animal lover I know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Valuing the Roles of Animals in our Lives
The author, Susan McElroy, uses her successful fight against cancer as the backdrop for this inspirational work. She credits her animal companions for much of the strength and wisdom she needed to be a cancer survivor.

McElroy's way of combining stories and analyzing them makes this more than just a collection of sweet pet stories. It helps you recognize the important role animals play in our lives. The inspiration, hope, love and of course bittersweet emotions we've all felt with our animals are all stirred up when reading this book. She also devotes time to the wild animals that touch our lives, even if just fleetingly.

Animals as Teachers and Healers is highly recommended for everyone who's life has been changed by the love of an animal. ... Read more
