Book Description

Not since Kliban has there been a cat book this edgy. Edgy as in Bosco, the demonic Siamese with the out-of-focus eyes, razor-sharp fangs, and his own idea of Feng Shui. Or the half-shaved freak named Mr. Fliegel, who looks like a cross between a poodle and a lion. Mr. Fliegel shrugs and says, "Chicks dig me." Or Kato, resplendent in his Three Musketeers outfit: "One for all, blah blah blah . . . now just get me out of this @#%&ing costume!" Or Clark, whose hobby is eating other cats' food. Tina, who somehow always just misses the litter box . . . sucker. And the guilty-looking Clarence, caught with a Barbie doll in flagrante delicto. Clarence's defiant defense: "She was naked when I came in. . . ."

Just as Kliban got us to think about the cat as something far more interesting than an innocuous house pet, and Suzy Becker taught us that cats possess a Buddha-like wisdom (together Cat and All I Need to Know I Learned from My Cat have more than 2.6 million copies in print), Jim Edgar reveals yet another facet of the ever-mesmerizing animal. Brooding, deranged, antisocial, these are kitties with attitude and borderline personality problems--ah, but what hilarious fun it is to read about them. All 244 photographed in terrifying full color in their most unflattering moments, with a quote plus vital stats: name, breed, age, and hobby. Get to know them. Then see if you can ever forget them.

Book Description

David Tutera is a highly regarded event designer whose clients have included Elton John, Barbara Walters, Star Jones, and Susan Lucci. He is also the host of a new one-hour, twice-daily program on the Discovery Channel, Party Planner with David Tutera, that debuts in January 2005. On the show, Tutera lends his expertise to people looking to throw an unforgettable party on an everyday budget. Tutera brings a fresh, original twist to holiday parties while retaining time-honored traditions. He demonstrates novel and affordable--yet utterly sophisticated--approaches to special occasions, holiday and cocktail parties, and dinner parties.

Also included are "Tutera Tips" for invitations, entertainment, decor, menu ideas, table settings, and floral arrangements.

David Tutera is already a noted name, but THE PARTY PLANNER will bring his reputation and signature approach in entertaining to a broad new audience. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Read about this in Country Home magazine.
I believe Country Home wrote an article about these woman and pictured them and some of the quilts. I found it fascinating! It made me thankful for what I've got and showed me that beauty is everywhere -- its just a matter of how you interpret the world around you. Erin

5-0 out of 5 stars more than a coffee table book
The Quilts of Gee;s Bend is much more than a beautiful coffee table book. It is that, too, of course. The book is filled with social history of this small place near Selma, Alabama. I've been lucky enough to visit Gee's Bend and see the quilt-making process. The Whitney Museum exhibit must have been wonderful. Sunday Morning on CBS did a story on the exhibit. The quilters traveled to New York for the opening and entertained the guests with their singing. That's what Gee's Bend is like: A rich yet poor stop on the road where women made the best of what they had and turned out great art in the process.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must Have
I have seen the exhibition of the Gee's Bend quilts at the Whitney museum three times. The quilts of Gee's Bend are simple, graphic, and stunning. Although I own the smaller of the Gee's Bend quilt books and the video about the quiltmakers, I find that I want to know and see much more. I have thumbed through this book at the museum and am delighted that it is full of lush photographs of so many more quilts. At the top of my holiday list of things I must have, is this, the larger of the Gee's Bend quilt books. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview of a complicated process
Owning your own home has long been considered the American Dream. For many, that includes designing and building the homes themselves. But building a home is a complex project filled with pitfalls and traps, and unwary budding homeowners can find their dreams turning into nightmares.

Enter Mark Smith, who has built several houses of his own. Written by a man who acted as his own general contractor, "The Owner-Builder Book" is crammed with useful advice on how to oversee your own project, from planning to construction. But be warned: it's unflinchingly honest about the amount of work and stress involved. While Mark Smith writes that it's possible to build a house in six months, first will come at least a year of planning and organizing. Once construction begins, you'll have to deal with ensuring that subcontractors appear on time and finish their work on time before the next group of workers appears. You may also have to deal with problems such as late deliveries of materials, subcontractors who don't show up, or who demand advances before working, threatened lawsuits,

Reading this book will give you a better appreciation of what the general contractor goes through. It will either fire your desire to run the show yourself and pocket the savings, or gratefully turn over the work to someone who does it for a living. But what it will also do is give you the information needed to make informed decisions that, even if you work with a contractor, will save you money.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful book!
I was fortunate to come across this book as I was making my decision to owner build my custom home. This book was an excellent resource and it allowed me to go in to my construction effort well informed and ready to tackle the project. From tax insights, to planning and organizing techniques this book covers everything that I needed to know. It's step by step plan of attack, and it's insightful and fun to read reminders truly helped me get into the drivers seat. In the end, I was able to save a substantial amount of money in the construction of my home, as well as avoiding several headaches, and mistakes along the way. The owner builder book chronicled owner builders like myself who had a story to tell, and insider tips. I also learned strategies that enabled me to take advantage of tax benefits. In owner building, knowledge isn't only power, it's tremendous savings.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Helpful Guidance * Practical Advice to PLAN, PLAN, PLAN
This is an excellent book to read during the PLANNING stages of your building project. The book is written in an easy-to-read format and had insightful suggestions on cost savings, tax avoidance, quality construction and more.
Highly recommended!

4-0 out of 5 stars When Lenders Listen to Owner-Builders
The Owner-Builder world is here. When the cost of buying a home in the local subdivision is priced out of the hands of 50% of the local population it is time to look for alternatives.

The title of this book states it all. The Owner-Builder book is the first purchase (must have it) for those considering building their next home to meet family needs. The Author takes an on hands approach listing subject matter in easy to find sections. I like the way he relays this information.

The book will guide you to understanding many of the areas you are expected to know prior to talking seriously to a lender when securing a construction loan. I recommend this book to anyone approaching me for a construction loan. If they can complete the exercises and follow thru with the recommendations, they will have my ear for considering them for a loan. As a Construction Lender and Construction Site Supervisor this book is a must read for my clients. It saves money, time and enhances communication for all involved. Thank You for a great tool I can add to my professional arsenal. I recommend this book daily.

2-0 out of 5 stars lacking in actual construction information
I found the book helpful in areas such as financing, getting subs to show up on time, and getting good prices on material.
I was looking for very specific info regarding the actual steps of constructing your own home. I need to know exactly what type of foundation is best, how to calculate much fill I'd need for the project and so on. If you're looking for a factual book on home construction, this is not the one. I'll keep looking. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A Student's Review
A comprehensive guide to floral care and designing. The author has complete instructions with illustrations which are very helpful.
The author also teaches concepts through repetition and ties the chapters together by reviewing past concepts.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Textbook of the Basics of Floral Design
We used this textbook in our 'intro to floral design' course at Texas A&M University. I thought it did an excellent job of teaching all of the basic design principles, and it also had very good pictures and diagrams to aide in the learning. Unfortunately, I sold this book at the end of the semester, and I wish that I had kept it. I have been looking for a more economically priced floral design book, as complete as this one, and have not been able to find it. I you are a beginning designer, or need the ultimate floral design reference, this is the book for you!

5-0 out of 5 stars Textbook Style Book
This is a great book. It is a textbook style book, so it is a little on the technical side. If you are interested in retail floristry then you will find it to be a great book. But if you are a hobbyist or are looking for a book to give you ideas for arrangements to place around the house/office this book maybe more technical than you want.

4-0 out of 5 stars Lacks good design, but great practical knowledge.
Norah Hunter was my floral design instructor, so of course, we used her book. Coming from a strong design background, I think that the arrangements are at best mediocre and lacking creativity. Some of the design theories seem over simplified to me as well. However, although the design instruction falls short in my opinion, the practical knowledge she teaches about flower names, running a floral business, care and handling, etc. are invaluable to anyone working in the floral industry. The book also contains an excellent appendix of flower and foliage names with illustrations.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Floral Design
"This is the BIBLE OF THE FLORAL INDUSTRY! " That is the exact words my instructor used five years ago when I attended design school. Since that day, I still refer back to it again and again. The techniques and illustrations are wonderfully formatted in such a way that is easy to understand. Everything from the history of floral design up to todays job opportunities within floristry are covered. If you strive to be a knowledgable designer in all areas, this book will surely lead the way. More examples of topics covered are; wiring techniques for corsages, proper care and handling of flowers, understanding color, design principles, controlling cost, holidays, funeral arrangements, the list goes on and on. This is a must have book for any designers library. Sincerely, Julie E. Bargeron ... Read more

Book Description

In the hands of an expert ceramist, the once-simple cup can become an extraordinary work of art-as these 500 magnificent examples so beautifully prove. The exciting pieces come from an international array of artists, each with a unique perspective. The stylishly varied collection has a little bit of everything: the cups range from handbuilt to wheel-thrown, practical to sculptural, round to square. Benjamin Schulman's "Stacked Teacup Set" takes a strictly functional approach, while Heather O'Brien's "Dessert Cups on Stand" focuses on aesthetic form rather than usefulness. Annette Gates' "Espresso Shot Cups with Rubies" has a surface design of simple abstract lines and dots of glaze and jewels. Some are whimsical, others starkly conceptual. Every one is a treat for the eye.

This book is as fantastic as 500 teapots! It is full of inspiration! I love it and highly recommend it, buy it now, don't wait another second!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Reference
Like so many of the Lark books, this one is filled with, you guessed it, 500 photos. Nicely dnone I might add (I am a commercial photographer who dabbles in ceramics to keep myself sane...ish). Now I must admit that I didn't actually count the photo's to see if there are exactly 500, but I'll bet the editor did.

This book isn't a technique book, but a beautiful reference of about any imaginable ceramic cup, functional and not (some are full of holes and would hold nothing but cotton), traditional, contemporary, Japanese style, hand built, thrown, altered and, well, just about everything I have personally ever been exposed to or even heard about.

I love this book.

I find great inspiration as I turn each page.

If you are looking for references, inspiration, or just some great ceramic works, I highly recommend this book. While you are at it, check out the one on bowls. It's great as well. ... Read more

Book Description

A well-trained dog is the result of education – actually, more yours than your dog’s. You need to know what makes a dog a dog: how he thinks, reacts, grows, and expresses himself; what his needs are; and most important, why he does what he does. When you understand your dog, you will achieve a mutually rewarding relationship. Dogs aren't homogeneous. Each one is unique, and in their differences lie the challenge.

Dog Training For Dummies can help anyone who has just brought home a puppy or is thinking of getting one. Even if you have experience with dog training, you’ll find useful information for a wide variety of dog breeds and personalities. This book is also for you if

  • You want your dog to be well behaved – for his sake as well as yours.
  • You have little or no knowledge of proper dog training techniques
  • You have done some reading on the subject, but have had limited success with your dog.
  • Your dog is partially trained but needs to learn a few more things

Find out what it takes to have a well-behaved pooch by recognizing your dog's instinctive behaviors and determining its personality profile. Understand what your expectations are and know how your attitude affects your dog's training. This handy reference guide also covers the following and more:

  • Dealing with barking and chewing
  • Coping with separation anxiety
  • Housetraining a puppy
  • Walking and heeling
  • Retrieving on command
  • Training for competitive dog titles
  • Teaching your dog to be a Companion Dog
  • Dealing with aggression
  • Understanding your dog's health
  • Going to obedience school

The important thing about dog training is to get started today. The sooner you train your dog to behave the way you want him to, the sooner the two of you can live in peace together, and the more problems you can prevent down the road. So get going! Your dog will thank you for it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthy of a Spot on Your Bookshelf
This book gets put down a lot because it has a couple of flaws. However, overall, it is a great book on Dog Training, and it contains a lot of information the person trying to train their dog really needs to know. This book helps you get inside your dog's head and understand why he does and does not listen. It puts the world as your dog sees it in perspective and shows you how to communicate on his level so you can help him understand exactly what is expected of him.

If you read this book you will become someone who can control their dog and have a happy, obedient canine companion.

4-0 out of 5 stars Review from another veterinary technician
Like another reviewer, I am also a veterinary technician and I strongly disagree with her dismissal of many things in this book on the basis that the authors aren't "medically trained". These authors are very experienced and respected people in the dog training/health fields. Their advice on rabies vaccination timing and commercial dog foods are, I believe, valid. The veterinary field (vets and technicians)is not a monolithic block. I personally know many licensed veterinarians
who agree wholehearedly with the health issues in this book. As someone who has a degree in veterinary technology (plus human physical therapy) I am dismayed by the attitude of many of my colleagues that vettech/vet school is the only place to receive valid training and information. There is minimal training inbehavior and nutrition.
I have found that the Volhard's training methods work quite well, and they are also followed and respected by many canine breeding/training professionals.

1-0 out of 5 stars Get a better dog training book
There are so many dog training books that are so much better, like, anything by Carol Lea Benjamin, or Job Michael Evans, The Evans Guide for Housetraining Your Dog by Job Michael Evans,
Reading The Dog's Mind: Learning to Train from the Dog's Point of View by John Holmes, Mary Holmes, Dog Behavior: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet by Ian Dunbar, Right from the Start: Care and Training for the Life of Your Dog
by Race Foster, Marty Smith, How Dogs Learn by Mary R. Burch, Jon S. Bailey, Puppy Care and Training: An Owner's Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet by Bardi McLennan , All Dogs Need Some Training by Liz Palika Yhe Dog's Mind: Understanding Your Dog's Behavior ,by Bruce Fogle,Dog Training for Kids,by Carol Lea Benjamin , Dog Training: An Owners Guide to a Happy Healthy Pet by Amy Ammen Dog Training for Children and Parents by Michael Tucker, Mother Knows Best: The Natural Way to Train Your Dog,by Carol Lea Benjamin What All Good Dogs Should Know: The Sensible Way to Train by Jack Volhard, A-Z Of Dog Training and Behavior,by Patrick Holden, Kay White Dog-Friendly Dog Training by Andrea Arden ---- just to name a few! All of these are much better than the the dummies one, which is dumb.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good training advice
Am I mistaken, do the authors have a degree in veterinary medicine? I didn't think so. As a veterinary technician, I know medical advice when I see it and the authors are certainly not qualified to dispense that. They give their opinions as medical fact, and it is not so. They give spaying and neutering a bad name by exaggerating the so-called "negative behavioral changes" associated with that, without hardly mentioning the endless positive changes. They also warn owners that giving a rabies vaccine at the time of the surgery will have "devastating effects" on the animal. In truth, at the very worst, the animal will not mount a sufficient immune reaction and the vaccine won't work. As far as the nutrition section is concerned, if you feed your dog a premium dog food, you don't need supplements or raw meat. Basically, I don't think the authors should be giving advice on medical issues without a degree in nutrition or health sciences. If you can ignore all that and promise yourself not to listen to it, I do recommend this book. It does have some great training advice as well as information to help you understand pack animals and why a dog acts like it does.

2-0 out of 5 stars Low on Practicality
I am one of those people who enjoys reading cookbooks and dog training books. I rarely cook and never well, with an equivalent depressed performance in the canine management domain. This is a book however, that is only good for reading, and in that area, it isn't bad, just not an `ah hah' experience. The "pack behavior" business is covered as it is everywhere, and there are the obligatory breed specific blurbs, but when it comes to the real getting up and doing the stuff, it falls well below the mark. For instance, some on the leash 'figure eight' move that would be a real effort for a motor/direction impaired person like me, is merely a bad picture and a few lines. They couldn't really have intended you to do it. I have found that when it comes to directions with dogs, people are pretty dense, or like me, lazy and unmotivated. People take a long time to grasp the main idea as in keeping them in the crate or a small area until they are completely trained. That seems quite simple, however, with the average people attention span and ability to follow directions, I have observed, (as I am also on an internet dog training E-letter,) a breakdown in human cognition with regard to this most universal and simple rule. Perhaps these authors are wise to that group of reading non-doers of which I am one, and have generated a book just for us as though, it were a cookbook or Gourmet Magazine. Even so, there are better reads, and your dog may even, by fluke, benefit from a wiser purchase. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars perfectly simple
The coloring atlas of horse anatomy is a wonderful tool for the study and understanding of the horse anatomy. It is presented to the viewer in a form of simplicity but at the same time with unmatchable professionalism and details, evidently the author has a great respect, knowledge and understanding of the noble animal and the viewer as well. The atlas is easily approachable by the first time student for its easy and clear graphical and illustrative format. The idea of "do it yourself" it's great. Coloring the components of the horse anatomy while studying it helps the anatomist to impress the subject in his/her mind with remarkable and undeleting results. One of his kind. Without any doubt necessary for a serious study of the horse anatomy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but not excellent
Knitting on the Edge is a collection of basically everything you could possibly consider using on the edges of a knitting pattern, from lacy borders to the more mundane ribbing, garter stitch border or hem.
The book is pitched toward beginners or intermediate knitters, making it very acessible. However, more expert knitters, used to charts, will be annoyed by the endless strings of "k5, p2 tog, yo...", and the inability to edit the patterns on the fly.
The chapter on ribs is for the most part uninspired, while the section on ruffles and pleats is worth a look, especially if your taste runs towards things with frilly edges, or you see yourself concocting a garment for a baby girl sometime in the future.
The lace section is deeply dissapointing. The examples are swatches knitted in some kind of raspberry-colored worsted yarn. It's almost impossible to determine where the eyelets are, let alone what kind of pattern they make.
There is a paltry collection of 25 apparently rather uninteresting traditional sideways lace borders, with the majority of the chapter taken up by borders that consist of a few repeats of a lace pattern that are bound off at the final row. Besides neglecting the entire point of a traditional lace border (which, if knitted onto the live stitches of a piece, completely avoids binding off, maintaining the inherent elasticity of lace) it leads the knitter into the difficult prospect of attempting to bind off a lace pattern in such a manner that it dosen't bind up and look a complete wreck.
The chapter on fringe and tassels demonstrates several clever methods, incorporating traditional knotted fringes and fringes made from dropped sitches, some of which are cut. There are also interesting patterns made from fringes along the edges of cable patterns, for that "Celtic Cowboy" look.
The section entitled "Flora" contains representations of plant anatomy in various states of abstraction. The more realistic versions in sculptural stitches or lace are quite lovely.
The final chapter, "Points and Picots", also covers some patterns that would be better off classed in the "lace" department, as well as such standbys as The Hem, in all its various turning rows, and The Band of Garter Stitch (The Band of Ribbing having been covered in a previous chapter).
The final section of the book contains patterns for the use of some of the edgings in the book. The ruffled purse is really the only project here that was particularly inspired; everything else was rather ho-hum: edgings go on the ends of things: cuffs, collars, and hems. I would have been happier if Epstien had included some more challenging projects, or ones that pushed the envelope of edging.
Overall this book bites off far more than it can eat, let alone comfortably chew. Epstien only scratches the surface of her topic. I would have been happier with a much larger and more in-depth coverage of the topic, especially that of lace borders. Nicky Epstein is not the next Barbara Walker. However, this is a good introduction to borders, and a good book for any designer (aspiring or otherwise) to own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE book for all knitters!
Nicky Epstein has done it again - created a knitting book that every knitter should have in their personal libraries. The patterns for the borders are well organized by type making it easy to scan through the pages and select a border for your latest knitting project. The photos of the swatches are crisp and show excellent stitch definition.

If you hadn't given much thought before to adding decorative edgings to your knitted garments, afgans, shawls, etc. this book will inspire you to do so. Definitely a MUST HAVE book for all knitters!

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful reference book
The variety and styles that the author has designed are numerous enough that it should satisfy a variety of tastes - it certainly earns its five stars. Nicky Epstein's unique knitting artistry is well reflected in this book. The swatches are clearly made (details of stitches are easily seen), the categories are numerous, the styles range from easy to complex work. I especially like the format of the book - layout is clean and readable (like when you have it open while knitting), and the projects in the book give you a basic idea how to use the edgings.

It DEFINITELY is a good addition to one's knitting reference library. The author has a prior book with some of same edgings but this book is unique enough and full of very useful things to make the purchase well worth it.

5-0 out of 5 stars License to Creative Flights of Fancy
What a cool book! There are three pullover patterns, two scarves, a purse and a cardigan, but the real stars are all the different stitch patterns for edgings. These are organized in chapters by type, and range from ribs, ruffles, lace and fringes to flora, points and picots. Each chapter's sample swatches are knit in a different color theme and are shown on the same two-page spread as the stitch instructions. The swatches range from the simple to the very sophisticated, the colors are lush and tempting, and the instructions look straightforward and clear. The number of alternatives offered is dizzying! The reader can peruse 102 different rib swatches, for example.

Now I know why I have not been able to start my next bag yet -- I was waiting for the inspiration of this kind of a collection! I'm sure I'll be able to pick out one of the cabled fringe edgings soon and cast on for a new project. How could I not, with so many tempting images before me?

My only gripe -- there's no index, so if you remember that you wanted to use the saxon braid and you didn't write down the page number, you have to scan through a whole chapter to find it. This is a minor concern, but given that some chapters are upwards of 20 pages long, I thought I'd mention it. The entire book is just under 170 pages.

This is probably the perfect companion to Ann Budd's Knitter's Handy Book of Patterns. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful
I love anything by Melanie Falick. This book has FANTATIC ideas with beautiful imagery. I have had her,"Kids Knittitng"(great for kids and adults), book for a while and this one is such a great addition. These aren't your grandmothers patterns. My kids beg me for these mittens, hats, etc. It's a book that gets you excited about knitting. A must have. You may want to put it out on you coffee table in between projects.

5-0 out of 5 stars the perfect knitting book
i adore this book. i'm a relatively experienced knitter and i've had no problems with any of the patterns so far. i've knit several of the flower washcloths, some turtleneck egg cozies, the super mittens, the felted stash accessories bag, and am currently in the midst of knitting the union square poncho. and i'll probably use this excellent book for many of the other patterns. i think the instructions are quite clear, especially the notes included in each pattern that explain any difficult parts of the project. also, as many other reviewers have noted, the pictures are quite beautiful. it's the perfect book for us younger(ish) knitters who want simple and hip (but not too hip) patterns--with a great range in level of difficulty--that inspire us to knit more.

3-0 out of 5 stars Much Harder Than I Expected
I am a new knitter. I thought this book would have alot more easy projects than it actually does. If you are an experienced knitter, maybe you could use it, but it is too tough for me. Many of the instructions seem unclear. I'll hold on to it, though. Maybe in a couple years I'll find it useful, but for now, it will sit on the shelf.

2-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful photos, some horrid patterns
yes, the photos are beautiful and i wanted to try many of the projects. but the patterns are unnecessarily difficult and at times impossible -- i tried making the curly toed elf slippers three times and it was a total bust. i am an experienced knitter, but this book can be quite frustrating. the washcloths do work, but the crystal palace chenille pulls, try the new manos del uraguay cotton yarn instead.

1-0 out of 5 stars Pretty pictures but poor instructions
I am an experienced knitter and was very excited about getting this book as a gift. The pictures are beautiful and there were several projects that looked challenging enough for me to learn a few new things. I started by making the gloves. After getting confused by the instructions and having to rip out the first glove several times I consulted other patterns and found several errors in this book. In order to finish these I had to completely revise the pattern and ignore the book. Even after this I felt that one bad pattern wasn't worth dismissing the entire book, so I tried the brioche scarf. Once again the pattern was confusing and I had to chart my own waters to complete the scarf. Unless you are using the book merely as inspiration to develop your own projects I would not recommend it. ... Read more

Mr. Heavens certainly knows his stuff when it comes to how to make your house look nice! Look at the back cover of the book with Search Inside the Book, and Mr. Heaven's credentials are certainly worthy of one's trust. 5-0 out of 5 stars Practical, Workable Advice--it doesn't get better than this!
This is one of the finest little gems in the dog behavior world--a practical, step-by-step guide to help desensitize and modify unwanted responses, while building confidence in your dog. This book's advice is the very same approach I used to take my juvenile delinquent dog from a problem child to the National Service Dog of the Year. I buy copies of this book and give them out constantly. If your dog has reactivity problems--for whatever reason, this is a book that will change your dog's life.

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written & easy to understand ...
Fortunately, there are very few overtly aggressive dogs, most dogs act aggressively because they are fearful ...

Unfortunately though, the bite from an aggressive dog and one from a nervous dog are equally painful, and often attract the same dire consequences ...

This is a great booklet that teaches us how to manage a nervous or cautious canine ...

First, the author shows us how to identify our dog's fear ... and then the author teaches us (step-by-step) how classical re-conditioning can help to reduce such fear ... in a gentle and effective manner.

Often the biggest barrier to effective training, is our own lack of clarity as to what is required of us as trainers ...

But the short chapters and the step-by-step format used by the author makes everything so very clear and easy to understand ... And just as helpful, the author also provides suggesttions, when a particular step does not achieve that intended ...

All in all, a useful booklet ...

5-0 out of 5 stars nice little booklet
This isn't really a "book" per se, but more of a booklet. It IS filled to the very last page with great information for owners of shy or aggressive dogs. My puppy was a bit shy (not a biter, though, thank goodness), and I used some of the tips in this little book and, lo and behold, I now have a much more confident, happy dog. He still won't walk up to a complete stranger for petting, but he's a lot more tolerant of them coming a little closer without cowering behind my legs. I absolutely recommend this!

5-0 out of 5 stars concise, practical, informative, and very helpful
I knew there would be a lot of baggage involved when I adopted a young greyhound who had been neglected, starved, and beaten prior to rescue. Although his fear did not make him agressive it did pose problems with daily activities: loud sounds, anyone walking behind him on the street, men, angry voices on TV, the clicking sounds from soda cans, cameras, or ball-point pens, anything remotely shaped like a stick...the list of things that completely paralized him went on and on.

My sister, who is active in Aussie rescue, suggested this booklet (she was coping with a rescued fear-biter at the time). The suggestions in this book enabled us both to help our very different animals blossom into the confident, well-mannered, loving, envy-inspiring dogs they are today.

Of special help to me was understanding that 'comforting' behaviour on my part just gave my dog the certainty that there really was something to worry about. As soon as I changed that he began to act less anxious. When rescued he was never supposed to be allowed to be an only dog because of his nervous anxiety and self-destructive coping methods. So when my elder grey passed some months back we worried about regression. Thanks to this booklet he is more happy, playful, and calm than ever before. He even lies tummy-up on the grass a few feet away as my husband swings his golf clubs and works on his game. His utter indifference to a big stick was something I never imagined possible and would never have happened without the wisdom in this little booklet.

Thank you, Ms. McConnell!

4-0 out of 5 stars Good info

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Gift
This is the type of memory book that all couples should receive as a wedding gift. Similar to those books kids use to keep their report cards and other memorabilia during their school years, this book captures the essentials of a couples married years. This book easily records key information about a couples married life that will be treasured by family for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Wedding Anniversary Memory Book
Nothing is more fun than sitting down with your spouse and collecting memories together in this beautiful and meaningful book. Give it as a gift to the bride-to-be and she'll not only have years of easy journaling and memory-keeping ahead, but she and her betrothed will also be able to look through the wonderful ecclectic collection of wedding blessings, prayers, and sayings from across many cultures. Truly a gift that keeps on giving. I got one as a gift, and I continue to give it to friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with this purchase
This is a great book to document your anniversary milestones. Starting with a brief description of your wedding, the book helps you document your first through fifteenth anniversaries, skipping to the 20th, 25th, 30th, 40th and then 50th. Each year has one page for a picture, and a page to record memorable moments from the past year. I believe that if too much is required, people will not document each year. That is what I enjoy about this book, it does not require a huge investment of time each year. You do not need to be artistic or creative, because the book presents your memories nicely for you. The book is of a good quality, and you will not be disappointed with your purchase. I bought this for myself, but I am going to buy more to give as shower or wedding gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best shower gifts I received
I loved this when I opened it at my shower. It's a really sweet memory book, and a nice place to help us remember some of the milestones in our life. There's enough space to get somewhat detailed, but not so much that I will feel overwhelmed each year, or forced into it. I recommend it highly!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book - shame about the production quality
I bought two copies of this book, one for myself, one for a wedding present based on the glowing reviews that it received from amazon readers. The content and pictures of the book were great and I would definitely recommend it as a gift for newly weds. The only disappointment I had was that both copies I received had printing errors and marks. There were creases on the pages that had been printed over and printing marks. One even had a crease on the cover! This was the case for both copies I received and the marks were on different pages in each copy. In a store I would never have purchased imperfect copies like this for a gift. ... Read more
