Book Description

Tree houses capture the imagination of the child in all of us, and they have never been more popular than they are today. This inspirational yet thoroughly practical guide shows even the most inexperienced weekend carpenter how to design and build a lifetime of memories for the entire family. With more than 200,000 copies of their popular Weekend Project Books sold, David and Jeanie Stiles have become America's First Couple of do-it-yourself woodworking. In Tree Houses You Can Actually Build, they explain basic building procedures through clear, simple instructions and non-technical line drawings that illustrate every step of the project, from the earliest sketches to the final cedar shingle. The authors outline five basic designs that can be adapted to virtually any set of conditions, and throughout the book, they emphasize safety for both adults and children. In addition to line drawings, the book contains a section of full-color photographs highlighting a variety of tree house projects, plus helpful building tips based on interviews with their owners. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent, practical, and fun treehouse building guide!
We built a fantastic treehouse this summer using many of the ideas from this book. My 8-yr old son and 6-yr old daughter learned so much from the simple illustrations. The book helped us decide on a tree, a design, and gave us nuts & bolts instructions as well as many practical tips. We highly recommend this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Information on building a Basic Treehouse
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a step-by-step plan to building a basic treehouse and many fun additions on to the treehouse such as crows nests, rope ladders, pulleys, telephones, furniture and more. The instructions are very clear and easy to follow. If you want to build a more complicated treehouse(for example a treehouse with electrical outlets or more than 2 rooms) this book most likely isn't for you. For people who just want to browse pictures of amazing treehouses around the world I suggest Peter Nelson's Treehouses: The Art and Craft of Living out on A Limb.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best of the Best!
By far, the Stiles' books are the best. I'm building a treehouse right now for my son. Following guidelines in this book, I'm certain that we will enjoy it for years to come.

4-0 out of 5 stars Best for those with children
I found myself a bit down on my luck after the dot-com bubble burst. I came across this book and bought it using my last few dollars. By following the simple directions contained therein, I managed to build a magnificent tree house in a very sturdy elm in a nice, quiet neighborhood. Unfortunately, I was evicted for "trespassing" soon after moving in. My only complaint regarding this book is that it gives short shrift to tree house zoning laws in the US.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book - still timely
Like the 24 other reviews of this book I built a great treehouse for my kids in fall 2002. Many, many people ask me how I learned to build one and I simply show them the book. I even used an illustration to modify a one-tree tree house into a two tree treehouse that is 8 X 10 feet and 15 feet off the ground. My 8 year old daughter built a rope ladder and had a blast. I've since looked at several other treehouse books to see how this one compares - and for the price, it's well worth it. ... Read more

Book Description

Sarah Susanka's first three books have launched a revolution in residential architecture with the message that it's not the size of the house that matters, but the quality of its design and details. Her books strike a chord in homeowners, who are finding that bigger doesn't necessarily mean better. Now, in Home by Design, Susanka presents 30 design concepts that can transform any house into a welcoming home filled with character, beauty, and comfort. Opening readers' eyes to what's possible, she makes spatial design accessible to the layperson. Each of the design concepts here, from entryways to public/private space to window positioning, is illustrated with examples from houses by leading architects. Homeowners will learn how to assess their environment to discover what works or doesn't, and find the necessary tools to create the homes they really want. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring and useful
This book is really 4 1/2 stars. I have found this to be the perfect way for me to start to think about space and light as my husband and I begin planning a renovation to the house we just purchased. Since we haven't lived there, we have the advantage of not being "stuck" in thinking about changes to the house, but we have the disadvantage of not knowing how traffic patterns, seasonal light and other factors will affect our renovations. The text is pretty clear and is arranged within three major categories - space, light, and order. The photographs are incredibly helpful and the author even shows pairs of photos, one with the feature under discussion, and a second "altered" photo showing what the room would look like without that feature (e.g., a window at the end of a hallway). Very helpful to me as I get ready to talk to the professionals and sign up for expensive changes! We've put post-it notes on lots of pages.

3-0 out of 5 stars Definitely NOT Not-So-Big, and not really a "keeper."
In essence, this book is a checklist of new vocabulary terms that Susanka invented for the purpose of articulating design concepts. Each term is well-illustrated by a residential example, with plenty of pictures. The print quality is beautiful as usual, and the editing and book design are well done, although a little overslicked and glossy. I was very happy to see the comparative photomanipulations to illustrate how a design concept changes the feel of a room. I enjoyed and appreciated the "Public Space" feature, in which Sarah's newly-named concepts are shown in photos of familiar large public buildings such as libraries or museums.

The not-so-big books dealt with the primary design -- the floor plan. The bulk of this book is concerned with "secondary" details that could be applied to any floor plan, such as window placement, staircase railings, ceiling shape, window type, or even the way the wall covering reflected light. Sometimes this felt more like interior design than architecture. You should probably have a floor plan -- and a bursting bank account -- in hand before you try to apply what is shown here.

One major weaknes is that Susanka has chosen far too few houses for her examples. It must have be convenient for the author and photographer when a single example illustrated several design concepts (cuts down on photography time), but the book became very tedious. Must we tour Susanka's own house for the FOURTH time? And the circular kitchen lost its novelty quickly.

Although I understood this would not be a repeat of her not-so-big concepts, I was surprised at the magnitude of departure from the Not So Big books to Home By Design. Although her text has a familiar hominess, her examples here all have a look-don't-touch attitude that I found off-putting. No consideration is given to cost or even space; indeed some of the houses looked so unlivable and showy that sometimes I confused the residential houses with the museums featured in Public Space. My impression was that Susanka was relieved to cast off the limits of not-so-big and focus on the lofty ideals of pure design without distraction from the practical concerns of those pesky clients who were acutally going to live in the house. I don't believe this was her intention, but be prepared for the shift in tone.

On its own objective architectural merit, this is probably a 4-star book, but I chose to take off a star because of Susanka's choice too few residences (and they were too artsy-fartsy at that), and because I don't want readers to be misled by the author's name into thinking this is a No So Big book. DO NOT buy this book sight unseen, especially if you are a fan of Not So Big. Borrow it from the library, or at least flip through all the way through it at a real bookstore before you spend the money on it. It's not for everybody.

1-0 out of 5 stars Exasperating
Who edited this book? Does Sarah Susanka really believe that a photograph which measures 1.5" x 1.5" is useful? I am a young person with 20/20 vision, and could not focus on these pictures. Susanka explains good design in a way that is original and refreshing; when a room looks good, she tells you why - and this is deeply informative. But the art of design is VISUAL, end of story. A blind person does not care if the alcove has wainscoting! Why then, would a designer of her calibre allow puny, useless, annoying photos in a book that costs $35.US??

All throughout, there they are: tiny little pictures that would have been stunning examples of well-placed design ideas, but instead serve to leave the reader frustrated and disappointed.
For example, under the heading "Art Glass Focus" is a picture of a remarkable stained-glass window panel. But the photo measures 2.25 x 3 inches. There is no context in a picture this small!

If you aren't bothered by pictures so small that you need a magnifying glass, then by all means buy the book. If you only care about interesting text - buy the book. But if you love interior design and get a thrill from a picture of a truly great room, then do yourself a favour and buy the New Decorating Book from Better Homes & Gardens. I waited two months on a waiting list at the library for this book and I am so glad that I didn't buy it - I would be furious.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very refreshing!!
I look at home design's books constantly but have never felt compelled to actually buy one until reading Home By Design. The layout of various design options in this book is great for those who own homes and even for those who wish to own homes in the future. There were numerous suggestions on how to utilize any living space. The explanations weren't difficult to understand or patronizing to those of us that aren't interior decorators or architechts. The photographs are beautiful. The rooms in the photographs are spacious but not in a far fetched way that some home design books feature. By that, I mean that you could actually picture some of these rooms in your own home. I think it's important in home design books to make the reader feel comfortable. You don't want the book to have a fairy tale vision because it'll end up in a pile of books at some garage sale. I would definitely recommend purchasing this book. I will be keeping it as a reference manual in my personal library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Good Design is Not an Accident
Sarah Susanka describes "Home by Design" as "the book I've always wanted to write." As an experienced architect, she works with clients who recognize what they like, but often lack the ability to describe it. She has developed not only a vocabulary to describe some of the design concepts she uses in her houses, but, through this new book, has illustrated these concepts with technically simple language and well selected photos.

She organizes the book into 27 concepts under the broad headings of "Space, Light, and Order." A chapter is devoted to each concept with photographs and layouts of a house carefully selected to illustrate the concept. Other illustrations are provided as needed, mostly selected from the other example houses.

The quality of publication is up to the standard of her first two books - beautiful photos, well formatted, pleasing to the eye and written in language accessible to a lay audience. She used the practice of her second book, illustrating the principles discussed with the works of other architects who share some of her design ideas. Except for three small photos, only one of the example houses is her own design (Introduction, pp. 10-17).

Does this really work? I can speak from a 6-year dialogue with the author that resulted in a house we love. My wife admired the author's work before I ever thought about building a house. We bought a "difficult" lot in an old neighborhood - long, narrow, with a big tree right in the middle of it. We needed an architect. We looked around and liked her work the best of the architects we considered. She accepted the challenge.

She had us make a scrapbook of house images we liked and drawings of layouts and other ideas that came to us. We talked a lot. She got an idea of our tastes in materials, forms and colors. She developed drafts of several houses she thought incorporated the ideas we liked. We selected a patchwork from among these possibilities. That provided the cartoon within which she applied her concepts of "Space, Light and Order."

The specifications of the house plans that evolved were very detailed - 19 pages of blueprints. Materials and construction methods were tightly specified. Despite that, several key pieces were designed on-site: the entry door, the fireplace surround, the stairwell, some of the trim layouts (both interior and exterior), several additional bookcases.

As I read the book, I can mentally illustrate each concept with at least one, often many, uses of the concept within our house design.

Does this work for others? It certainly should for readers who build a new house. Its not just that smaller is better - organization of space, use of natural light, alignment are essential to making a house look and feel right. Creative use of these principals is not necessarily expensive but it does not happen by accident. When a visitor admires the way something looks in our house, I tell them it is not an accident. It may look simple and easy, but it takes careful thought to provide the feel of a well-designed house.

Can this book be useful to the remodeler? I think so. Even if you can't knock out a lot of walls, most projects provide opportunity to reorganize the use of space, trim, surface materials, fixtures, window treatments, colors. These are all beautifully illustrated by this new book. For the remodeler, I'd suggest that the author's third book "Not So Big Solutions for Your Home", provides some essential insights that I would consider first principles, even before her first book, "The Not So Big House". Read "Not So Big Solutions", then develop the organization, balance, and beauty with the new book, "Home by Design". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great for the novice knitter
As a brand-new knitter I find the techniques in this book extremely easy to understand. Step-by-step photos are soooo helpful! Sally teaches you new techniques *as you need them* - they are not all lumped together in one area. I love that type of layout as I tend to go on overload when presented with a lot of information at once, lol. As for the projects, there are some good ones for beginners (scarves, hats, mittens and a fabulous bag) although I find most of the sweaters too oversized and bulky for my frame. However, the photos are beautiful and the finished garments are chic and inspiring.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Must-have Book for All Knitters
If you knit, you must have this book. Here I am, a person who has been knitting for over 40 years, and I learn something new every time I pick up the book. I have already made 3 projects - each more beautiful than the next. This book is a wonderful addition to your library and a wonderful book to give as a gift to any knitter, beginner or experienced.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really ugly baggy sweaters
I bought this book sight unseen because I like "The Knit Stitch" so much. There is not one sweater or other garment in "The Purl Stitch" that I would be seen in, even at home by my immediate family. Perhaps this is why the author celebrates "process not product"

5-0 out of 5 stars Sally does it again
I cannot add a great deal to what other reviewers have said except that at least 2 veteran knitters have looked at her 2 books in this series and have our eyes opened at the brilliant uses of boring old knit and purl. Sally is a true inspiration who takes you back to the basic and makes you look at things in a completely new way.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Patterns PLUS Large Sizes
I really like this book. It has a wide range of projects from sweaters, to shawls, to socks. It also includes a wide size range that includes "plus" sizes for women, as well as men's sizes. If that's not enough, it also includes the chest measurement, garment length, and sleeve length for each size. As long as you check your gauge, this makes it easy to adjust the pattern for a perfect fit. There are also well-illustrated instructions for things like making buttonholes, closing the toe of a sock, etc.; plus a lot of information on proper ease for various styles to get a good fit. I really like this book! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Work on Residential Construction
This book shows anyone the technical aspects of home construction in very clear terms. The formulas are excellent for figuring the costs of a project. The format is very simple to learn and the tests at the end of each chapter summarize the material well.

2-0 out of 5 stars Good for students, but....
The previous editions of this book contained a lot of reference information and illustrations for both novice and experienced home carpenter. This edition has changed the emphasis to students primarily, with larger type but less specific reference material such as hanging doors, special framing problems, etc. Disappointing.

4-0 out of 5 stars Many strengths, a few weaknesses
Cauldwell's book, overall, is an excellent text for those who are building their own homes and doing the bulk of the wiring themselves. The book's strengths are the straightforward explanations and clear exploded wiring diagrams. Cauldwell does a good job pointing out common safety issues and how to avoid getting zapped. However, the book has some weak points. One is that he doesn't acknowledge that master electricians (and utility company engineers) don't agree on many wiring procedures, particularly in the areas of grounding the electrical system and wiring branch circuits. For example, I followed his recommendation of installing two ground rods -- and was ordered by the utility company to remove one of them before they would wire the meter, as their policy was to only have one rod (I found that utility companies have their own policies for grounding residential electric systems that aren't always the same as the 96 NEC). A couple master electricians disagreed with his suggested procedures for wiring receptacles, although their alternate suggestions certainly weren't easier. They also noted that in my county, placement of smoke detectors is governed by the UBC, not the NEC (smoke detectors in every bedroom, outside BR doors, in living and family rooms, and at the bottom of lower floor stairs). Thus, future editions of the book might remind us to check with our electric utility before getting deeply into the wiring job,to obtain their specific policies and local codes rather than relying only on the NEC. Future editions also might give more information on where to find large capacity receptacle boxes; in order to avoid some of the cable fill violations he aptly describes; and more clearly emphasize to us beginners just how much practice it takes to wire receptacles correctly, particularly in parallel. Otherwise, it's a good book written in a pleasant, digestable style.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent reference
I've read a lot of how to books on every type of home renovation but this is the best book I've ever seen on electrical. It's an excellent reference - I've used to do things like wire a 3 way light right the 1st time! an excellent book for both experts and beginners. would like to see a little more about circut breaker wiring the next time it's updated. practical code references are excellent.

5-0 out of 5 stars For DIY folks who think they are ready for the "big jobs"
Particularly well-suited for the experienced DIY homeowner, this is an outstanding reference work. As the author explains at the outset, he is passing along his hard-won experience as a third-generation electrician. Of particular interest to me were the discriptions (and consequences) of how NOT to do certain things and "code-work" and "better-than-code" work. While no one book can cover it all, this one comes close. This is a great "graduate-level" course for someone who has reached the limits of what is available in the typical home electrical books. While you still need someone knowledgable in local code issues, this book gets you 95% there on your own.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great read on this subject
This book is a great read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.

About the only improvement i could say is even more detail and more pages as i enjoyed it so much i wanted even more.

I believe this will help me with my home remodel project. I expecially enjoyed actually finding information on installing a service entrance which, since my house has an obsolete 40 amp main, is the first thing i have to do.

I only wish i could find more online electrical supply places for 400amp meter boxes. Seems like (as in his book) a 400 amp meter feeding 2 200amp panels is probably what i want to do now.

Great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars great resource
I agree with most peoples assesmant that this is not for those without any prior knowledge of home wiring but it does go great with black and decker's book"Complete guide to home wiring"
It does a great job of walking you through the do's and don'ts of electrical work as well as pointing out common pitfalls. It is a must have for anyone who does alot of electrical work and needs a reference for code compliance concerns. ... Read more

Book Description

" The entire story of furniture is presented as it never has been before.Written with great verve and in a highly accessible style, The History of Furniture conveys a vast knowledge of history and design with stunning intellectual clarity. In surveying the development of furniture from antiquity to the present day, John Morley focuses on the Western traditions, but he includes the outside influences of China and Japan, India, Egypt, and Africa. His bravura analysis reveals connections between pieces of furniture, such as the direct line from antiquity to a neoclassical French commode, a Biedermeier dressing table, and a twentieth-century bois clair cocktail cabinet.

The story is shaped by a conflict between "classical" and "anti-classical," order and fantasy, and includes the wild extravagances of exotic styles. We see how the simple challenge of making a chair to sit on could generate a huge variety of forms, depending not only on changing fashion in interiors, as well as motifs, ornaments, and ideas from the worlds of politics, religion, architecture, and the fine arts.Works by famous designers-Boulle, Chippendale, Riesener, Makintosh, Eames-appear clearly in the context of the stylish ideals of their times, and nearly 700 illustrations are closely integrated into the text.

The result is not only an essential reference tool for everyone concerned with collecting, selling, or studying furniture and the decorative arts but also a tour de force of scholarship that will enthrall anyone with the least interest in the traditions of Western culture." ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The science of indoor growing
With the way times change, this new edition of Indoor Horticulture is as indispensable now as its predecessor was in its moment. In the multidisciplinary field of indoor growing Mr Cervantes steers enerringly betwixt the science of closet cultivation and the art of growing kind herbs. Whether you're off-and-going or up-and-coming this book has everything you need to know and then some. If you have a problem that isn't mentioned here, maybe you're growing a different plant... that's where the high-quality color photos come in handy. As the cover suggests, an "illuminating" book that leaves no stone unturned, not even the sobering memory of thousands of drug war prisoners in jail for growing marijuana. Highly recommendable.

5-0 out of 5 stars Indoor Marijuana Horticulture - The Indoor Bible
This is the only guide you will need, it covers everything you will need to know from A to Z. The book is packed with extensive information on hydroponics, including the Sea Of Green, lighting, soils & soilless mixes, CO2, insect, spider mite, fungus & disease control, fertilizers, nutrient disorders, seeds & seedlings, seed companies, plant care, mother plants, pruning & bending, determining sex, odor control, drying, harvest, medicinal use, safety and security. It also has 200 color photos, 200 b/w drawings, charts & graphs, ALL IN ONE BOOK! I guess that's why they call it "The Indoor Bible".

4-0 out of 5 stars Great, but could have been better
Jorge covers everything you want to know about indoor marijuana growing, only there are frequent errors and contradicting statements. It also could have been better organized, but its vast supply of info makes up for these shortcummings.

4-0 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect
One of the best ever grow guides. When you consider how much you'll spend on seeds and equipment to grow, you've go to see the value in buying a manual and this is a great investment. True there are a few mistakes and it's a little uneven, some subjects are covered in amazing detail and others in very little, but this is a must have for any potentail grower.

5-0 out of 5 stars Jorge knows whats up!
People ask me all the time to recommend a grow book. Without fail, I always point to Mr. Cervantes work. He has been a respectable icon in the cannabis world for many years, and really knows his stuff.

Book Description

Debunking the myth that reef aquariums need to be wildly expensive and technologically complex, John Tullock offers a new, radically simple approach to producing beautiful, captive microcosms.

Using live rock and live sand as part of a natural filtration system, the home aquarist can now create vibrant reef tanks that are biologically stable and simple to maintain.

With Tullock’s suggestions, the reefkeeper can now mimic natural habitats such as a Florida Keys Lagoon, a Caribbean Turtle Grass Flat, an Indo-Pacific Deep Cave, or a Red Sea Patch Reef. With more than 200 color photographs and illustrations, Natural Reef Aquariums provides inspiration for both beginning and expert marine reef hobbyists. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Full of detailed information
I have several reef aquarium books and so far this is the best one. The systems for reef aquariums have changed over the past several years. The thing I like about this book is that it is really up-to-date and talks about the 3 different set-up techniques. There are lots of colorful pictures of everything from equipment, to fascinating corals and fish. You get the sense that the author is a real expert on the topic.

2-0 out of 5 stars BAIT AND SWITCH
I bought this book with great anticipation after having read Tullock's "First Marine Aquarium" published by Barrons. This "Natural Reef Aquarium" was a huge disappointment, and I liken the experience to having a student write a 5 page paper for an "A" and then expanding the same topic to a 20 page paper for a "C". This book rambles and meanders with far less focus and precision than Tullock's "First Marine" book. Gone are the useful charts and lists of different animals needs and compatibilities. ALso, he never seems to make a clear distinction between his own version of keeping an aquarium and that of the Berlin method developed by others. Tullock's "First Marine" book was inspirational, and was written with such conviction to really convey the radical departure of his methods. This book is full of filler, and major themes are tied together with the weakest of threads. My advice, buy the "First Marine" book, you'll get all the basic information and a lot more passion for the hobby.

2-0 out of 5 stars Pretty book but misrepresented
This book represents itself as a low-tech simplified reef-keeping guide. Instead the author suggests almost every gadget out there. Including calcium reactors, RO/DI, etc.

I guess is was wishful thinking on my part that there truly exists a simple way to keep reef aquariums.

It does have great pictures and is nice for inspirational purposes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent work
This book is a must have for anyone interested in starting a reef aquarium. It covers everything you need to know. One of the best books on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars troy
This book is very well written and a bargain at the price. It gives very good descriptions and lets you know that there are more than one way to do a reef aquarium. It is a little much for someone just trying to get into the hobby but I would recomend it to anyone that is trying to get into the hobby as a second book and get one geared a little more for the beginner as the first book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Throw out all those inhumane training methods, read this boo
I have read every book under the sun about dogs and training them. I have had 4 other dogs prior to my new found puppy of 9 months all of which have never recieved any formal training because I thought the methods were so inhumane.
I picked up " The Dog Listener" and my entire view of dogs was completely changed. I now understood why so many of my other dogs were so content and well behaved, I was treating them like dogs not humans. The book just re affirmed my way of raising a dog.
I began the exact method on my rotweiler, named Millie not even a week ago, immediate results. I will say I wasn't having any major problems with her prior to the new way but this way has opened many more doors for her.
After reading all the different stories of how this wonderful woman overcame such obstacles in reclaiming peoples family pups jsut tore at my heart, inspiring me to pass along this idea to all my pet loving friends. I also help out at a groomers shop so I decided to pass along the title of the book along with real examples. I would love to meet Jan Fennell and watch her in action. Knowing that is probably not possible I try to imagine her in a home, solving another pup problem. My favorite and most wonderful story was about the couple that were going to get married yet their dogs didn't care for each other. A beautiful love of animals to bring the couple together along with their pups.
So in my opinion, there is no other method out there that even comes close to training a dog than the "The Dog Listener". Buy one for your freinds as gifts, the stories are inspiring at a time when we need more inspiration in our lives.
Thank you for sharing with us Jan!

5-0 out of 5 stars If your dog is your child, you need to read this book!
Jan Fennell does a fabulous job of explaining the dynamics of our puppies' roots-- the wolf pack. In her descriptions, she delves into the underlying causes of some of the behavior of dogs that many humans find puzzling. You'll have many "aha!" moments while reading this book. If you've ever looked at your dog and thought "what in the world..." you may find out "what" in this book. She teaches you how to communicate with your dog-- this is the good part-- in behavioral terms. So it's actually works! She tells you what you should be communicating to your dog, how to act it out, and why it's so crucial. She also gives workable solutions to some of the most troublesome problems that many people have with their dogs.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject I have ever read
This is the best book on dogs I have ever read! It is set forth in simple terms, with easy to follow case studies that illustrate the method. It begins with the author seeking solutions to "dog issues" everyone can relate to. We join her on her journey to solutions that work.

There were actually things I learned I do right with my pack of 4. I would recommend this book as a first choice for anyone living with dogs or soon to be.

Now if she would only come up with a book on cats.

5-0 out of 5 stars A view from the pack perspective
As a person who works professionally with animals, this book gives me a perspective on the canine pack behavior even when the pack only has two members: 1 human and 1 dog. For me it is the missing piece of the equation. I have read other material on pack behavior but I find Jan's book is very easy to read and implement. I have already started changing my behavior with my rescue (and timid) standard poodle and have begun to see benefits. In fact it's helping me take a fresh look at the 'pack' behavior of my multiple cat household as well.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Dog Listener
Of all the dog books I have read, and I have read a lot, this one gave me a new understanding on dogs and how to be a confident and loving owner. Jan Fennell shares her experiences from beginning to end. Jan's training techniques are great in the sense a dog wants to do what you want and not what it is made to do. I highly recommend this book to everyone. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Too much!

5-0 out of 5 stars a little knowledge is a dangerous thing....
I have no knowledge of how to act around horses or horsey people. I am an animal lover...but dogs are my specialty. Thank God for this book! I learned so many basics. This book was perfect for me. And after reading about all the hidden costs and all of the time involved....I still want a horse! But at least there wont be any surprises.

3-0 out of 5 stars Horses for Beginners
This is the perfect book for people that know very little about horses. It covers the basics of most equine topics, and is in an easy-to-read format. I unfortunately did not find this book useful. Anyone past the "intermediate" stage may become board with it due to its lack of advanced excercises and vice-solving. For more dedicated riders I would recommend "The Complete Training of Horse and Rider" by Col. Alois Podhajsky. Once again, this is a good book for beginners but not intermediate or advanced riders.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best beginner horse book you can buy
My husband & I decided to buy horses on a whim, but we knew we'd have to do alot of learning before we were ready to buy our first horse. Out of the many (many, MANY) books we bought, this book clearly stood out. It taught us ALL the basics, and was a wonderful referrence guide for all our questions as we got through the first 3 years, going from boarding to moving out to our own land. This book is a MUST HAVE for beginners, and worth more than the asking price. When I lent it to my cousin, I counted the days (actually YEARS) until she gave it back - once a month there was something I wanted to look up quick!

For more advanced horse people, or casual rent-a-horse riders, this book may be too basic. It covers everything from care, to buying, to everything about owning a horse. Not advanced concepts, or anecotes, or riding styles, etc.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great beginner's book
This book is quite well written and very understandable for all ages.

5-0 out of 5 stars An awesome book
I just picked this book up and enjoyed it. However when Horse Sense 101 says they focus too much on the hardships of ownership, i think she is totally off. Owning horse IS hard, I have been riding for seven years! Every single abuse case is a case where the owner did not consider how much a horse would need. This book does a great job illustrating this, and preventing cases like this. They are simply tellng you the realistic facts of owning a 1200 pound animal. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Knitting wisdom from Knitting Legend Elizabeth Zimmerman
Elizabeth Zimmerman was not only a knitting teacher, but also a designer and artist. She wrote pretty well, too! She was quite a personality and when she passed away in 1999, she merited a long obit in the New York Times. Subsequently, a knitting craze hit the world. Is it a coincidence, or did she impart her spirit to all of us when she left after a long and fruitful life.

This book is utterly delightful. It is my favorite knitting book and if I could only have one, this would be my choice. I have knitted my way through most of the patterns and they are varied, interesting and good for designing your own things.

Included in the book is the percentage system, same as in Knitting without Tears, her classic for beginning knitters. This is applied to a beautiful Shetland sweater with a yoke fair-isle design. This classic design looks wonderful on children and adults. You can make it in any size.

There is also the wildly clever Moccasin sock, that can be re-soled. The construction is unlike any other kind of sock and shows the brilliant engineering mind of EZ.

There is a shawl (PI r squared) which is a varation of the PI shawl found in the Knitting Almanac. This has a straight front, like a stole, and rounds off in the back.

The Moebius scarf is also in this book (a ring with a twist that goes around your neck and drapes attractively.) These are just some of the knitting patterns; there is a lot more. Elizabeth knew how to pack a book with plenty of information and this is no exception.

There's not only knitting here, there are lovely color photographs of Elizabeth's watercolors (she was trained in Munich at a famous art school.) There is a gallery in the book of some of her wonderful designs in the most attractive colors. And best of all, an autobiographical "digression" that tells Elizabeth's story, funny, interesting and always unique.

If you don't own all of EZ's books (Knitting Without Tears, Knitting Almanac, Knitting Workshop and this one, Knitting Around) I think this is the best one to start with if you more or less know how to knit. It improved my knitting 1000 percent and I recommend this book to everyone who likes to knit.

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite EZ book - part autobiography, part good knitting
It's not often that a knitter merits an obituary in the New York Times or NPR, but when Elizabeth died in November 1999, she received both tributes. She left knitters a huge legacy including four wonderful books. I own all four, and this is my favorite.

First, I really enjoy the autobiography woven through the book. From a childhood in England to marriage and children in the USA, it's a very interesting story. For the career minded, it's a wonderful tale of a cottage industry grown on talent, charm and hard work.

This book also includes several of my favorite "patterns". For those unfamiliar with EZ, a word of caution. The greatest of Elizabeth's accomplishments (IMHO), was her rebellion against blind following of patterns. Sure, you could make exact duplicates of her sweaters, but where's the fun in that? Elizabeth teaches (and writes patterns) in terms of concepts and thinking. The result -- patterns that can be adapted for different weights of yarn and different bodies. So, in this book are "instructions" for a beautiful Norwegian sweater; the classic shetland wool, fair isle neck sweater so popular in the 70's; the mocassin sock (easy to reknit when heels and toes wear out); the "Pi-R" shawl; and the great mobieus scarf (think the infinity circle).

If you have the chance, the video series that accompanies this book (for a series of PBS shows as I recall) is also a treat. Schoolhouse Press produces them (don't know if Amazon carries them).

Bottom line: Not a book for the novice knitter but a wonderful addition to the library of any person who can no longer remember how many times they've said "just let me finish this row."

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to your EZ library
This book is part autobiography-part knitting patterns. It is fun to read, and has ideas and patterns for knitting along the same lines as her other books. I would recommend buying Knitting W/O Tears first, as it teaches more techniques, but this book is great if you want to sit down with an 'old friend'. ... Read more
