I made a fantistic discovery when a co-workers loaned me her copy of "Christmas with Southern Living Cookbook," Volume 3, 1999 Ed. Within 1 week, I had tried out four recipes with marvelous results. The shopping lists were most helpful. My family was elated that I prepared what they called "Sunday Dinners" during the week. mediocre ... big disappointment
This was a huge disappointment.Thank goodness I bought it from Amazon so can return it.All those recipes but no hints about why they're special -- and there's a vast difference between recipes you treasure because they contain ingredients that are readily available, because they're cheap, because they're quick and easy, and because they're delectable.I like to know which is which before spending my time and money, and this book provides no hints. It could have been cranked out from any sterile test kitchen.I prefer tried-and=true recipes that tell you why they're treasured.

The crafts are even worse.For example, a "new or recycled" picture frame to which you glue birdseed and hang it on a bush or tree.A *NEW* picture frame?Yeah, right.Is this book intended for the Rockefellers?I feed birds every day, but they'd rather have me spend my money on birdseed than on picture frames!

People looking for ideas on what to serve and gifts to give for Kwanzaa will find good suggestions in this book. The book also includes a helpful pronounciation guide for Kwanzaa terms. But I was disappointed to find twocritical errors: 1) the author instructs that the green candles are placedto the left of the black candle in the Kwanza Kinara (candle holder) whenit is the red candles that go to the left -- as illustrated on the book'scover. 2) The author advises that Kwanzaa feast, or Karamu, is held on the6th day of the holiday, when it is held on the seventh and last. Everythingabout Kwanzaa relates to seven -- seven principles, seven symbols, sevendays. DUH! Unfortunately, those key errors dampened by enthusiasm for therest of the book. ... Read more
