    Book Description

Wedding experts Denise and Alan Fields say it isn’t necessary to spend the nationwide average of 11 months of planning and $20,000 for a fabulous wedding. In this new edition of the bridal bargain bible, they outline specific budgets for beautiful weddings that cost a fraction of the average price. This edition includes reviews and ratings of more than 50 new bridal gown designers, tips on surfing the Web and saving on honeymoon costs, and a guide to the best online wedding bargains in the aftermath of the dot-com shake-up. The authors explode the "three costly myths" about wedding catering, show how to negotiate a great deal on a ceremony and reception site, and point prospective brides and grooms toward savings on invitations, flowers, wedding videos, entertainment, and more. Illustrations are also included in this latest edition of the best-selling book on weddings. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Bridal Bargains - A Great Gift for the Bride-to-be!!!
"Bridal Bargains" was the best wedding book I ever read. The advice was practical and helpful. Since reading it while I was getting married, I have given the book as a gift to my sister-in-law and niece for their upcoming weddings. I would recommend it to anyone getting married. It's not just for people who want to have a "cheap" wedding, but for people who want to have a quality wedding for the price they are spending.

A lot of people commented that the book might scare brides-to-be with its emphasis on wedding industry scams. This did not make me feel intimidated at all but instead I felt prepared to deal with wedding professionals. I was glad to know what questions to ask a caterer or DJ - how would an average person know anything about cake cutting fees and couture gowns? This book really prepared me for the interviews with vendors and helped me to find places where I could negotiate in price.

On a final note, I didn't agree with all of their advice, for example I wanted real flowers rather than silk, because the silk flowers looked so fake to me. I know this was a good money saving option, but I decided real flowers were more important to me than saving some money. This is true of any advice in the book - if you don't want to do it - don't! I don't think the author's want to substitute their own judgment in place of yours - you're the one who has to experience your wedding day - it should be the kind of day you want without emptying your bank account!

This book is A+ and I would recommend it to anyone getting married!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly superb!
I will be forever in debt to my future sister-in-law for buying me this book! Not only is it packed with everything I've ever had a question about, but it is really FUNNY! I've chuckled my way through this book. It is a very easy read and very well organized too. I consider myself pretty savvy but there is NO WAY I would have caught onto the hundreds of scams that everyone is pulling on brides! It is sickening but now I feel confident that I won't be taken advantage of!! It has great links to online sites too. I just ordered their book Cyberbride to get even more online info. My fiance and I have very little money but big, close-knit families. (I have three brothers w/spouses and another brother with a SO!) A big wedding is a must for me and this book has really given me some great ideas for cutting the costs down BIG TIME. I will forever recommend this book to any bride! I've already sung its praises to my cousin and my younger brother will be sure to get this book too when he's ready!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Answers to all the questions
This book was one that my fiancee and i have read through at least 3 times each. It's a super reference for those who have no idea what to expect or where to get started. I actually kicked myself a few times when I did not review a section before visiting a vendor. These tips are REALLY useful. Even the ones you don't use yourself. Of all the books I was given or bought when we got engaged, this was hands down the most helpful. Compared to this one, none of the others were even worth the paper on which they were printed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Now I buy this book for all my friends that are brides-to-be
i found i couldn't live without this book, so now as soon as i find out a friend of family member is recently engaged, i buy every one of them a copy! i can't imagine planning without it. i keep it on my bedside table and have read it at least a dozen times! i always check back for ideas to keep my memory fresh, even after i've booked all the vendors.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent research guide!
I am currently in the planning process. This book has given me the information I need to plan my wedding exactly the way that I want. I've been able to avoid the industry wedding invitation trap by using book tips and the internet. I found the dress that I wanted, with the help of the designer reviews section. I've been able to avoid several large additional fees from the caterer that I've hired and the reception venue, because those fees were explained very clearly in this book.

I noticed that there were several reviewers that did not like the short-cuts and money-saving tips that the authors recommended. There were a few tips that were not ethical, but most of them help the reader deal with retailers who are just out to make a buck, at your expense. I'm sure that it would be nice, in a sad, self-indulgent way, to expect your middle class parents to foot the bill for your gala, $100,000 wedding event-the one that society seems to think is necessary. But the bottom line is, most brides (and their families) can't afford to do that, don't feel the need to, or don't want that type of wedding. And this book is exactly the resource needed to have a beautiful wedding that fits your ideals and your budget. It's the only wedding book that has been useful in my planning process. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Gift
This is the type of memory book that all couples should receive as a wedding gift. Similar to those books kids use to keep their report cards and other memorabilia during their school years, this book captures the essentials of a couples married years. This book easily records key information about a couples married life that will be treasured by family for years to come.

5-0 out of 5 stars Our Wedding Anniversary Memory Book
Nothing is more fun than sitting down with your spouse and collecting memories together in this beautiful and meaningful book. Give it as a gift to the bride-to-be and she'll not only have years of easy journaling and memory-keeping ahead, but she and her betrothed will also be able to look through the wonderful ecclectic collection of wedding blessings, prayers, and sayings from across many cultures. Truly a gift that keeps on giving. I got one as a gift, and I continue to give it to friends and family.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very happy with this purchase
This is a great book to document your anniversary milestones. Starting with a brief description of your wedding, the book helps you document your first through fifteenth anniversaries, skipping to the 20th, 25th, 30th, 40th and then 50th. Each year has one page for a picture, and a page to record memorable moments from the past year. I believe that if too much is required, people will not document each year. That is what I enjoy about this book, it does not require a huge investment of time each year. You do not need to be artistic or creative, because the book presents your memories nicely for you. The book is of a good quality, and you will not be disappointed with your purchase. I bought this for myself, but I am going to buy more to give as shower or wedding gifts.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best shower gifts I received
I loved this when I opened it at my shower. It's a really sweet memory book, and a nice place to help us remember some of the milestones in our life. There's enough space to get somewhat detailed, but not so much that I will feel overwhelmed each year, or forced into it. I recommend it highly!

4-0 out of 5 stars Fantastic book - shame about the production quality
I bought two copies of this book, one for myself, one for a wedding present based on the glowing reviews that it received from amazon readers. The content and pictures of the book were great and I would definitely recommend it as a gift for newly weds. The only disappointment I had was that both copies I received had printing errors and marks. There were creases on the pages that had been printed over and printing marks. One even had a crease on the cover! This was the case for both copies I received and the marks were on different pages in each copy. In a store I would never have purchased imperfect copies like this for a gift. ... Read more

This practical companion to The Knot Complete Guide to Weddings in the Real World acts as a stand-alone guide to the nuts and bolts of planning a wedding. The Knot Ultimate Wedding Planner is where the bride and groom can record wedding ideas, create budget guidelines, check items off their to-do list, generate the guest list, store contact information for their wedding vendors, and get tips and advice on the best way to plan their big day.

Chapter by chapter, the planner walks the bridal couple through each major step: for example, choosing the reception site, picking a photographer, and deciding on a menu. Author Carley Roney and the editors of The Knot Web site have talked with both wedding professionals and hundreds of thousands of brides and grooms, and have a good idea of the necessary ingredients for a successful wedding. Most helpful and thorough are each chapter's "Questions to Ask" checklists and the "Knot Knowledge" tips, which include money-saving ideas. The book also contains a gift log, a budget tracker, and a wedding-day phone contacts sheet.

Roney offers loads of helpful advice, such as recommending that the bride and groom declare "wedding free zones" where the couple makes time for activities together that have nothing to do with planning the wedding. Each chapter also includes her down-to-earth answers to commonly asked questions, such as whether it's appropriate for a relative to host a shower or if the wedding couple should pay for guests' travel expenses. With all of its tips, advice, and organizers, The Knot Ultimate Wedding Planner may just be, next to a wedding coordinator, the best way for modern couples to ensure their wedding is a smoothly run, stress-free affair. --Kris Law ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Gets right to the point & well organized!
This book is absolutely wonderful, as is the web site itself. Everything is laid out so very clearly, making this whole wedding planning process actually a very entertaining process so far! It's helpful regardless of whether your wedding is within three month or a year away, as is in my case. This tool is highly recommended.

2-0 out of 5 stars Do KNOT bother
I suppose the book is straight forward, and such.

It has a clean "style" to it-- probably because it contains NO useful information inside.

I only bought this book because I am really impressed with theknot.com, so I assumed they'd have a fabulous book too. WRONG. Skip this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars There are better planners
I bought this book and then immediately returned it. It's just not worth the money to have a book with no color pictures and worksheets that are difficult to actually use without destroying the book itself. You can find the same information in bridal magazines and on the internet which can save you money.

2-0 out of 5 stars Wasn't impressed at all
If you don't have online access, then this could be a good resource for you. However, most of the information in this book can be found online at sites like theknot, weddingchannel and ultimatewedding. I was hoping for some new information and insight, but this just seemed like a recycled version of their online website.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Complete Waste of Money
I purchased this book hoping that it would help me plan my Oct. 2003 wedding. I could simply have used the monthly checklist that is available in any bridal magazine and then used theknot.com website for other info. There is absolutely no need at all to purchase this ridiculous book. ... Read more

What makes a perfect wedding? "[The bride] and the groom both look as though there were sunlight behind their eyes, as though their mouths irresistibly turned to smiles," wrote Emily Post in 1922's Etiquette. Great-granddaughter-in-law Peggy Post, author of the fourth edition of Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette, absolutely agrees with Miss Emily. To ensure those bright eyes and smiles, she imparts thoughtful and commonsensical advice on how to plan for not just your wedding, but for all the social and familial obligations and traditions that a wedding entails.

Unlike many wedding manuals, Post includes advice for the "encore" bride as well as for the new bride. In this day of remarriages and blended families, tact and strategy are often needed to make sure feelings aren't hurt and everything runs as smoothly as possible. A chapter on multicultural and interfaith marriages addresses differing world traditions and how they can be incorporated into a touching ceremony that makes both the couple and their families happy. If you are unsure of who is supposed to do what, Post gives you clear instruction, often including a flow chart that delineates the responsibilities of all people involved in the wedding party (bride's parents throw the engagement party, best man returns the tuxes, flower girl's family pays for her outfit).

Throughout Emily Post's Wedding Etiquette are sidebars with questions asked of Post regarding an amazing array of wedding-related conundrums ("My daughter's fiancé wants to follow his family's tradition of having a money tree at the wedding. I personally find this distasteful; can I say so?"). This is a great book to find the answers for all those sticky questions. All involved in the wedding process should leaf through, get their bearings, smile, and then forge ahead. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A fairly good book
This book is marvelous help in preparing for your wedding day, laying out all the physical aspects of the wedding from A to Z. Sadly, this book doesn't have much discussion on preparing your heart for the day. It is said that a woman looks forward to her wedding day, a man looks forward to the wedding night - both are important, but men often tend to downplay the day's events as they focus on the evening.

    ...

5-0 out of 5 stars Invaluable
An invaluable book to avoid potential wedding/social faux pas. Has guidance from invitations to thank you letters and everything in between. If you're wanting more value for the money, I would suggest "Emily Post's Etiquette (16th Edition or latest)" as it covers wedding (albeit not as detailed), social and business etiquette areas.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful and incredibly detailed
I decided to get this book because I was struggling with how to make wedding decisions that would potentially upset some people, like not having kids be invited. I was surprised when the book arrived at how thick it is, there is really a wealth of information in it. I like that she gives both a traditional and contemporary view on certain topics, and the sections are clearly marked so its not as though you have to read it from beginning to end to find what you are looking for. I think this book can be helpful even if you're not facing and etiquette dilemma, it makes you think of things you hadn't even thought of. Its also really clearly written.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Single-Source Wedding Book
If you only plan on buying *one* wedding guide book, this should be it.

Peggy Post addresses almost every aspect of wedding etiquette in this hefty book. Although you can find most of this information on Internet sites, Peggy Post does a fantastic job of compiling wedding information in one easy-to-use volume.

    Book highlights include:

    - Exhaustively Thorough Invitation Section
(Example: Outlines specific language you should use if the bride's divorced/remarried parents are jointly hosting the wedding.)

    - Engagement Outline
(Example: Gives recommendations for who the happy couple should tell, when, & how.)

    - Guest Information
(Example: Discusses gift giving, response cards, etc.)

Peggy Post does an excellent job of conveying information without sounding preachy. She offers recommendations instead of barking standards.

In addition to being a great planning tool, this book is also quite lovely! As such, it would make a beautiful engagement gift.

    Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Help for the things you didn't know you needed help with . .
Wedding Etiquette by Peggy Post proved a valuable complement to my Emily Post reference collection. This book was the only etiquette/planning book I purchased - information on every situation I encountered is included. From planning basics, what to expect from your parents, attendants and guests, how to broach the uncomfortable issues without stepping on toes, correspondence tips and who's responsible for what, Wedding Etiquette has it all. This book contains useful tidbits not found in other wedding books or even websites I have resourced such as how to appropriately and formally address correspondence to guests with a variety of titles, new spins on old traditions and how to handle challenging scenarios. This is an essential gift for the newly engaged or those who are planning to marry in the future. I only hope my guests have read it also . . ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Unique approach to planning ceremony from start to finish.
In writing my own wedding ceremony, I've borrowed countless books from the library and have done extensive internet research. Whereas many of the available resources focus solely on words used for the vows, readings, and ring exchange, this workbook covers the entire ceremony from start to finish, including the sometimes overlooked parts of the ceremony such as welcome and introduction, declaration of intent/consent, the meaning of the rings, and wedding blessings. The author provides entire ceremony scripts for seven different types of situations: both traditional and contemporary religious ceremonies, a civil ceremony, a "short and sweet" service, and finally, ceremonies for both second marriages and marriages with children involved. If you would prefer to create your own ceremony by mixing and matching, there are chapters on readings, wedding vows, ring exchange vows, and prayers and blessings; another chapter offers descriptions of several wedding traditions as well as other special touches to make your wedding unique.

One note of caution about this book: the author states that he has written this book using "the best of the best" words for weddings, but this means that the selection of choices is somewhat limited. Unlike some other ceremony planning books (such as The Knot Guide to Vows), you will not find page after page of suggestions for readings, vows, etc. In addition, the book does not address the topic of music, and it fails to include explanations of cultural traditions such as breaking the glass and jumping the broom. Despite these cautions, however, this is a useful book, particularly for those just beginning to determine the format for their wedding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Easiest Wedding Planning Decision
Of all the aspects of planning our wedding, this was, by far, the EASIEST. Brides, if you've been feeling 'fleeced' by the wedding industry, take heart. This is one decision you will be very happy with making. If you're looking to find a book to help with planning your ceremony, selecting your vows, and/or traditions, you will want this book. The book is extremely 'USER FRIENDLY' and is full of wonderful choices for how to make your ceremony special. I received this book to plan my own wedding about a week before my best friend's wedding and showed it to her. She loved it and said that she wished she had had the book when planning her own ceremony. I'm sure many brides like myself have found themselves up to their eyeballs making wedding planning decisions, but trust me, this was by far the easiest one to make. You've spent so much time deciding on your attire, the flowers, music, cakes, etc. but have you thought about what your minister and you and the groom will say other than 'Will you?' and 'I do.'? There are a variety of types of ceremonies (traditional, contemporary, civil, 'short and sweet', second-time marriages, interfaith, bi-lingual, etc.). You can even 'mix and match' or 'cut and paste' parts of the ceremony (the welcome, the vows, ring exchange, traditions, blessing, pronouncement, etc.) to suit your needs. If you've been looking endlessly in bookstores or online for some help on planning a very special wedding, you've found your book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful...great tool to plan your ceremony
This book provides clear options for your ceremony, from traditional to contemporary. My fiance and I are having a really enjoyable time going through it and planning just the right words for our vows. Excellent resource!

5-0 out of 5 stars A wedding must have!!!
From one stressed out bride to another, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. I spent a lot of time searching various resources for the prefect ceremony before I was given this book. The format and abundance of choices makes this book useful to a wide variety of engaged couples. There are several ceremonies outlined in the book. If one section doesn't suit you, there are pages of choices to pick from. You can mix and match the different sections until you have a ceremony perfect for you, or go with one of the full ceremonies detailed in the book. There are even option for second weddings, bilingual and civil ceremonies. I was able to set up a traditional, elegant ceremony, word for word in less than 30 minutes. I heartily recommend this book to any would be newlyweds.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent tool
I used this book (and Rev. Younkin) for my daughter's wedding three years ago. Now I'm using it for my own. This is an excellent tool for planning your ceremony. I can't recommend it enough! ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Maybe in a few years
I wish I could recommend this book a little higher because it is very beautiful. And I wish that I could make more of the recipes in this book because the pictures of the finished dishes look beautiful as well. But I'm not a chef and I'm not a caterer, I'm a beginning cook and while I do have patience and desire to learn to cook, I don't have hours each evening to prepare dinner.

I'm hoping to use this book in the future when I have a little more experience under my belt. I think it's a little misleading because it represents itself as a cookbook to help you learn how to cook. If I had received this as a gift, I may not have been so disappointed but this was quite an investment for a cookbook.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Very Classy and Classic Cookbook
This is such a welcome cookbook. It includes both partner's
in the act of learning to cook together. Most are for the
bride only, and given at a shower, if you are given the
standard book.(It is an excellent, but very basic book.)
The twins who wrote this book want to bring the couple into
the kitchen. Here they learn how to stock the room with the
most fundamental tools, pots and pans and spices and
    necessities to start their adventure.
It shows how to prepare for a dinner party with modern
    appetizers of the new generation.
It also shows the ordinary problems of how to carve the
turkey. There are recipes for all seasons and holidays.
All time nutricious meals take a big space. Some of them
are enlivened with newer ways of decorating your table.
Everything is a feast for the senses.
When the bride returned from her honeymoon, she told me
she and her husband were about to tackle a veggie
lasagna to have during the football game.
A bridesmaid in their wedding joking said,"Why didn't
you choose this for me."She was married last year and might
get a surprise this year under her tree.
The book ends with to love and cherish,a good reminder
when you are cooking or anytime of the day.

One Comment:Everyone remarked on the elegant wrapping paper
and printed note to the Bride and Groom.I had selected
from Amazon.com, gift wrapping, and an engraved note.I then
added a white bow to the silver paper.I don't know if this is
your standard gift wrap for weddings, but it was beautiful.

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful addition to the kitchen
I received this cookbook at my bridal shower this spring, and what a wonderful delight it has been! The book itself is gorgeous, with huge color photos of the fully prepared dishes. But what is best about this cookbook is that the meals that you create are beautiful and delicious. I am not an expert cook (still learning, but hey - I just got married so the family expectations are still low!) and I find this cookbook neither too easy nor too challenging. The breakfast strata, red grape and feta salad, and prosciutto and mushroom chicken are my particular favorites. I highly recommend this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS COOKBOOK
I am what is known as a "cookbook junkie". I buy them to try the recipes, but mostly just to read. Let me tell you, I have tried almost every recipe in this book. They are easy to follow with good pictures and good suggestions for making it a meal. I turn to it on a harried evening when I don't feel like cooking and whenever I am going to have a dinner party. I am searching for more books by these ladies. Awesome.

4-0 out of 5 stars This book's cookin'!
Much like my favorite chicken recipe from "Bride & Groom," this book is "divine"! I have quite the collection of cookbooks, but none gets more use than this one. And, it's managed to do what no other has: gotten my husband to help out!

We received this as a wedding present, but it's been a gift in more ways than one! It should be shared by EVERYONE, not just husbands and wives. ... Read more

Whether you want toned arms for your sleeveless gown or flat abs for your honeymoon bikini, certified trainer Sue Fleming can help you get in better shape for your wedding, even if you have only six months. This slim (106-page) book presents a six-month strength-training daily workout guide with cardio recommendations and a "crash program" if there’s only 12 weeks before the wedding. The strength-training exercises are basic, beginning workouts using dumbbells, stability ball, step, and ankle weights, all clearly explained and illustrated.

The cardio recommendations are very general--for instance, 75 minutes per week for weeks five and six, doing one or two activities that raise your heart rate for most of your workout, which should last at least 25 minutes. Sadly, Fleming runs through just a few ways (walking, running, and biking) to get aerobic exercise, but doesn't explore the huge array of cardio options or give much detail on this essential fitness component. Recommended for beginning exercisers who are committed to following a regular program and need specific strength-training exercises. --Joan Price ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Buff Brides is my choice!
As a panicked bride-to-be, I want to look and feel my best for my special day. I don't have the time to go to a gym so Buff Brides is the perfect alternative. This book specifically focuses on the areas that my wedding dress emphasizes. Plus, the funny illustrations keeps it lighthearted and fun! I also found the weekly "wedding reminders" to be quite helpful in planning the most important day of my life! I plan of giving Buff Brides to all future brides-to-be!

5-0 out of 5 stars I'm not even a bride, and I LOVE this workout!!!
I purchased this book a few years ago when I was working part time in a bookstore. At the time I was in a relationship and thought I might be a bride someday soon, and I wanted a workout that would give me tone (I don't need to lose a lot of weight, just firm and strengthen those muscles that give us trouble once we hit 25...) and help me feel more energized. Well, the relationship broke up and I put the book on the shelf and forgot about it.

Until a few weeks ago, when I was visiting a friend and we watched an episode of the "Buff Brides" show on TV. After watching the trainers instruct the brides-to-be, and seeing the great results, I remembered I had this book at home. Even though I am nowhere near being a bride, getting in better shape is never a bad thing, right?! So as soon as I returned home I dug the book out and started looking at the exercises. I realized I already had almost everything I would need to get started on the program...I had 3 lb and 5 lb weights, and a sturdy coffee table and chair to use in place of the aerobic stepper they show in the book...and after a quick trip to Target for a very inexpensive exercise ball I was all set. (I even got a great workout using the hand pump to inflate the exercise ball!!!)

I've only been doing this workout for 1 week now but I absolutely LOVE it!! I can already feel my arms and legs getting stronger and more toned. I commute to work and have about 30 minutes of walking time from the Metro to my office...so I have started wearing my sneakers and making that walk part of my workout plan too. My HUGE problem area is my tummy, so I expect it will take a little longer to see results there. And I love the fact that I don't have to starve myself, I have always tried to eat sensibly anyway and I can just continue to do that with this workout. And as soon as it gets warm enough out I also plan to start rollerblading (something I saw one of the brides on the show doing) to supplement the workouts.

I am NOT one to exercise, the thought of going to a gym is so foreign to me...and like everyone I have little free time. These workouts take around 30 minutes a day, 3 or 4 times a week, and require very little space. I love them so much I don't want to skip the day in between...so on those days I do extra exercises for my tummy, which the book specifically says is a muscle group that can be exercised every day. I especially love that the book advises you to rest your muscles, and not exercise yourself to the point of pain. After the first day I did feel some soreness in a few muscles I hadn't used in a long time (mainly triceps) but that quickly went away.

I could go on forever so I will end here by saying if you are a bride-to-be, or just someone who wants to get into better shape and hopefully shed a few pounds too, BUY THIS BOOK!!!! I agree that the book should be spiral bound though, it is a little difficult to get it to sit flat while doing the exercises.

4-0 out of 5 stars good clear photos are key
I am a personal trainer who heard about this book from my health club company. I looked at it and was pleasantly surprised to see that I already did every exercise depicted with my clients. The photos are very clear and demonstrate proper form for those who will work from it.

I don't like the idea that a woman should get in shape for her wedding and concentrate on what her guests should see --- after all, some brides will choose dresses that won't have anything on display -- but that's just the 'hook' for marketing. I mean, just because you wear a long full skirt and train does not mean you don't care what your behind looks like. (I also found the little drawings of a bride in a poofy gown lifting weights cloying.) Women should work out for their own health and pleasure. If you absolutely have to work out for a special occasion, work on all body parts for your honeymoon.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Program That Actually Works!!!!
This book is great! I hate working out and am the type of person who avoids it at all costs. This book gave me no excuses. The program does not require a lot of space, nor does it require a large investment in time or pricey equipment to do these exercises. I could do the workout at my convenience in the privacy of my own home. Now who can find excuses with flexibility like that? The exercises were explained well and the book was very easy to follow. The workout switches up from week to week so it doesn't get boring. I LOVED the results I achieved, and the fact it didn't take forever to start noticing the improvement (another key element to keeping me motivated).

I received so many compliments from friends who said things like "I wish I had the arms to be able to wear a dress like that" and "You are so lucky to have a nice back so you can wear that style". Believe me, I looked like an over-stuffed sausage in that dress when I first tried it on. We all know how slimming white is anyway. It was my dream dress though, and thanks to this book I was able to look the way I should have looked in it. I can't say enough good things about the Buff Brides workout. My husband is quite happy with the results too. ;)

5-0 out of 5 stars Buff Brides is THE BEST
The results this book gives are unbelievable. It's very simple, not time consuming, and really keeps you on track. I would recommend it to anyone, bride or not! I lost 8 pounds unintentionally from doing the Buff Brides workout--it's that good. If you want a pre-wedding workout guide, this book is absolutely the answer. ... Read more

Which flowers are in season in June? How should you word invitations to a second wedding? What questions should you ask a caterer or photographer? Wedding-industry expert Beverly Clark gives you the answers to these questions and many more in her remarkably thorough guide, Planning a Wedding to Remember. The 23 chapters in this hefty, spiral-bound planner cover everything from announcing the engagement to developing a budget to planning flowers, photography, prewedding parties, and the honeymoon. Clark gives couples the information they need to start thinking about their special day, and then provides them with the organizational tools to create their own special, personal celebration. "Start by deciding what is most important to you," she writes, "and plan the rest of the wedding around that." But what's truly unique and oh-so-useful about this planner is that in addition to Clark's tips and tricks, it contains dozens of worksheets and checklists to help you organize, shop, make decisions, write thank-you notes, and attend to every last detail--without going nuts and succumbing to the wedding crazies. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Very helpful & informative book!
After looking through dozens of wedding planning books, I finally decided to use this one. It has tons of charts and is full of useful hints. The layout is logical. There are several quizzes, which I love, that help you discover which type of wedding might suit you. I would suggest this book to another bride-to-be! I only wish that it had more money-saving tips and storage pockets. There are two pockets for clippings, etc., but more would be a big help. Other than those two small things, this book is EXCELLENT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Best wedding planner available !!!!
I went to the book store and spent several hours reading every available planner. I chose to buy the Beverly Clark Wedding Planner because of the taste level of Ms. Clark as well as the efficiency of the planning organization component.

I bought the book on Amazon because they had the best price available. I used the book to plan our wedding and it was truly a life saver. Our wedding was simply lovely and we enjoyed every moment. We even bought the Beverly Clark wedding accessories at www.bridalsalon.com.

Congradulations and good luck on your wedding plans!!!!!

I recently got engaged and wanted to buy all the books. This book has everything you could think of and more.My finance even looked through it and found some useful stuff. It's not just for the bride.I recommend this book to anyone who is planning a wedding big or small.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Organizer
I became engaged in November of 2000. My fiance and I were on a bit of a budget, so we would be planning the wedding on our own. I wanted to find an inexpensive planner that could help me plan the many details, make decisions, and keep me organized. My reasons for choosing this planner were:

    1. Worksheets, Information Sheets, and Checklists
There are worksheets covering everything from writing your engagement announcement to changing your name and address. There are information sheets to keep every aspect of your wedding organized, for example, catering, flowers, music. Most importantly, there are checklists to make sure you don't forget anything.

    2. Spiral Bound and Easy to Carry
This planner is spiral bound like a notebook. I knew I would have it with me quite a bit so I wanted something easy to carry and fairly durable.

    3. The Content
Each section covers, step by step, what needs to be done and how to do it.

Here are some of the different sections.

    Your Engagement
This section covers telling your family, engagement announcements and parties, engagement and wedding rings (how to choose diamonds, style, etc.), and even etiquette on breaking the engagement.

    Date and Planning Calendar
There is an undated nine month calendar that you can fill in to count down and keep track of appointments. There is a bride's and a groom's checklist as well as information on hiring a bridal consultant.

    Wedding Ceremony
There are creative ideas on how to personalize your ceremony, a worksheet for writing your own vows, and a couple sample ceremonies.

    Wedding Budget
A very important section for us. It tells you how to determine your budget, has money saving tips such as borrowing items or doing your own flowers, and a wedding expense record to keep track of how much you really spend.

    Invitations and Stationary
The all important guest list. There are 650 spaces, so you won't run out of room! There are ideas for many different styles of invitations and stationery as well as examples on wording and addressing.

    Planning the Reception
Tips for the location and type of reception. Special touches and money saving tips. Questions to ask the caterer and bakery. Again, plenty of room for the seating chart with 260 seats.

Beyond this there are some of the more self explanatory sections such as The Wedding Party, Bridal Gown and Accessories, Flowers, Music, Photography and Videography, Pre-Wedding Parties, Gifts, and The Honeymoon.

The only problems I see with this planner are that the calendar is only nine months. Where I live planning needs to start at least a year in advance. There's also not much room to write daily appointments especially if you have more than one in a day. I also would have found it helpful to have tabs for each section as well as pockets for business cards and receipts. There is a pocket in the back but it's kind of flimsy. The book comes with a Beverly Clark accessory catalog in the back pocket. Mine was glued in, so it ripped the pocket just a bit. There were several of the sections that I didn't need to use since we had friends helping out with things like music and flowers.

Overall, this planner helped keep me on track with my planning. It gave me quite a few ideas and in the end I had a beautiful, low stress wedding.

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Ultimate'ly the best resource out there !
This binder really gets you started on the right track, especially if you are more of a 'tomboy' who has not been planning their own wedding since the age of 3 ! Besides having to reorganize the folders (created my own tabs), the worksheets kept my husband & I on-track and we carried the binder everywhere with us, which was most useful at meetings with the photographers, florist, etc. Since then I have purchased for my newly engaged relatives and friends.... Hand-in-hand with the web-site, you should be good to go ! Enjoy your engagement.....

3-0 out of 5 stars Useful worksheets, but folders not planned well
Thought I liked it in the bookstore, until I got home and couldn't fit a normal sheet of paper in the folders. Unfortunately, I wrote in it before I tested the folders, so I'm trying to get my $$ back from the company. I'm sorry I wasted my money... I should have read the reviews here first.

1-0 out of 5 stars Waste of Time and Money
After planning my wedding, I found this book to be of no value whatsoever. The folders weren't even large enought to hold all of the stuff that you get. In my opinion it only adds work to an already time consuming ordeal.

    1-0 out of 5 stars Don't bother!
This book is too big to be useful or take anywhere, it doesn't provide any useful information, and the folders in it for holding pictures or magazine clippings are too small for holding a normal sheet of paper and also too loose to hold anything smaller (they fall right out). I suggest that if you want a binder, buy an empty one to fill yourself, that's what I ended up doing!

5-0 out of 5 stars ATTENTION ALL BRIDEZILLAS!!!
I absolutely love this!! I was carrying around 6 different planners until I received this as a gift. It has everything a bride-to-be needs and more!! I highly recommend it, whether you have entered the "bridezilla" stage of your planning or not, it will save you time and many sleep deprived nights!! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Cookbook!
I just bought this cookbook and it is the best! Recipes are good, clear and easy to follow. I recommend this to everybody, not just beginners.

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
It reminds me a lot of my mom's regular edition cookbook, with lots of the same recipies, but with a lot more basic kitchen how-to stuff. It's one of my favorite wedding gifts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book for 2 person household & new cooks
This cookbook assumes you're cooking for 2 people, not a whole family, which is a rare and helpful treat. As with most Betty Crockers, it starts with the basics, and does not assume the cook knows esoteric cooking terms, basic cooking times, etc. Recipes are easy, clear, involve basic ingredients, and most have been real hits in my household. It's a marvelous choice for a beginning cook (male or female), especially someone who'll be cooking only for 1 or 2 people.

The downside is that Betty Crocker recipes can be on the bland side. Many dishes in here are really basic. I've pencilled in my personal adjustments, spicing things up here and there.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great For New Brides
This cookbook is great. I received this book from my fiancée as a Christmas present. Not only does it have a wonderful variety of recipes, it also discusses basic concerns a new bride would have in her kitchen. Since I am marrying into a large family, I worry about how I will organize large get-togethers, especially the food. The book provides basic guidelines how you would handle these situations. It also helps you fill in the missing pieces to any dinner party (ie. Serving exotic beverages when guests show up? Snacking food? Dessert?)

Besides the entertaining aspect of being married, there are the everyday meals that need to be prepared. The instructions are easy to follow, and there a spaces in the book where you would write in your first dinner as a married couple, his favorite meal, your favorite meal.

This book is great. It is a great addition to any new kitchen.

    5-0 out of 5 stars A well rounded cookbook . . .
I love to cook and also have a ton of cookbooks. My Mom bought me this book as a wedding gift. Although there are a lot of good recipes I find the tips that are strewn about the book to be the most helpful. There is a lot of pages dedicated to how to cook different cuts of meat, what are different types of vegetables, important items to have in your kitchen, and a whole lot of other fun tips. I think this a great book for a first time cook (like a newlywed couple) but I also think the veteran cook would enjoy to have such a well rounded cookbook. This one really covers all of the bases. ... Read more

I became engaged on Christmas day and naturally spent the day floating. However December 26 it hit me that I had so much to do and could let too many days past with out making some decisions. I looked at several planners and a good friend told me that she had one for me. This planner exceeds anything that I had previously thought of purchasing. It gives you everything that you need and more. I plan to purchase them for all of my friends that get engaged in the future. This is a remarkable tool to help your wedding day complete. Great job.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book has organized my wedding and my life!
After researching all the wedding planners out there, I finally bought the Creative Wedding Organizer and Planner and I'm so glad I did! If you have lots of STUFF like brochures, magazine pictures, buisness cards and are wondering how to organize it all - this book has more holders, pockets and sheet protectors than any other book out there. The worksheets are easy to ready and the countdown checklist will keep you on track from 18 months out to the day of the wedding. There is space for sketches, and even space to write a journal about your engagement, wedding day and honeymoon. I'm half way through my planning and can't believe how much I've already accomplished. I have a record of every detail in this book. I look forward to adding my wedding pictures and keeping this book for years to come!

And take it from me, I thought I was such an organized person until I heard about and purchased this "binder". It is like no other I have ever seen. You can't help but be organized if you own this. There are sections for everything..clippings, contracts, quotes, business cards, guests lists..etc, etc. I totally recommend this Creative Planner to every couple getting married. When planning for the big day, it's very easy to get caught up in beaded white dresses, boutonnieres, and how many platters of mini crab cakes to order, but the most important part of the wedding is the most-often overlooked--the ceremony itself. A wedding ceremony can vary hugely depending on the religious (or not) beliefs of the couple, their cultural backgrounds, and their personal preferences. The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions can help you sort through all the choices and come up with just the right vows and music for you and your intended.

Do you want the traditional "I, so and so, take thee, so and so, to be my lawfully wedding husband/wife before God" or do you want a looser style: "I love you. And I look forward to being your friend and companion, your wife/husband and lover for life"? Carley Roney, author and editor-in-chief of The Knot (www.theknot.com), strongly suggests taking a stab at writing your own vows, but if that's just too much, cull what you like from the many different styles--from Buddhist to Quaker--offered. Readings can be from the Bible or other spiritual writings, from poetry or even song lyrics. A diverse selection of writings and excerpts are included as are a lengthy lists of songs and music for before the ceremony, the processional, the recessional, and the first dance (everything from Bach's "Brandenberg Concerto No. 4" to Martina McBride's "I Love You").

Also included here are chapters on the wedding program, ring exchanges, and speeches and toasts. Interspersed are stories and pictures of real couples and how they arranged their wedding day. Meant as a jolt to your imagination, The Knot Guide to Wedding Vows and Traditions helps you to put a very personal touch on an age-old ceremony. --Dana Van Nest ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Unoriginal
Unfortunately, I found this book to be as unoriginal as it's blan cover. The most stimulating parts were already discovered and passed on in the original personalized wedding book "With These Words...I Thee Wed"--secular & religious vows, and vows for all occasions and settings. "With These Words" was even the first book to introduce a questionnaire that aids in creating your own vows. So I'm not only disappointed that this book obviously has more marketing bucks than original ideas, it proves that you can't improve upon perfection.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good resource if you don't know where to start.
Although much of the information contained in this book is available through other sources--The Knot's own web site, for example--it is likely to be useful for someone in the beginning stages of planning their wedding and reception. In particular, there are plenty of examples of vows from various religious backgrounds as well as nice descriptions of various ethnic traditions (eg, the Afrocentric "Jumping the Broom"). There are a lot of ideas for those who wish to take a more non-traditional approach as well, as the book makes suggestions for incorporating songs, poetry, and the like into your celebration. The music section breaks the songs down into categories (eg, "first dance," "parents dances") and then further subdivides the categories based on type of music; the section on speeches and toasts is similarly divided based on who is doing the toast. One note of caution: there is less content in the book than its large size would suggest, as a significant number of pages are taken up by examples (eg, page after page of song titles) as well as a resource and bibliography list, both of which I viewed as unnecessary. However, if what you are looking for is plenty of examples so that you can make preliminary decisions about your wedding day, this book would work well.

4-0 out of 5 stars not just for the bride and groom
I am the romantic type and have been dreaming about my wedding since forever, but I bought this book, because there are so many great verses/poems/quotations about love. I like to include them in love letters to my boyfriend. Also has a great section on toasts if you are looking for just the right thing to say at an up and coming wedding.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Advice & Ideas
Loved this book -- it was very helpful, especially to couples who are writing their own vows. There were many suggested passages that are inspirational, and the book is loaded with interesting ceremony ideas.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not Impressed
I was hoping since "The Knot" had it's name tied to this book it would be exceptional. I found it to be marginal - reiterating a lot of the same information found in every other book about weddings. There were a few ideas for toasts that were really nice - and some of the vows were interesting, but overall - not what I was expecting at all considering the good review some of the other readers gave it. ... Book Description

Wedding Flowers taps into the desire of every bride to make her wedding day special. The choice of flower color, fragrance, and display is one of the most effective and fun ways to do so. Wedding Flowers will give the bride the confidence and ability to design her own floral theme and work with a florist to execute it, or perhaps even undertake some of the arrangements herself for a truly personal touch. The book explores wedding traditions as well as making suggestions for how a modern bride can depart from them. It addresses every type of seasonal concern; distinguishes decorative, ceremony, and reception flowers; provides great ideas for floral accessories; and, of course, devotes a lot of consideration to the all-important matter of the bridal bouquet. With step-by-step instructions throughout, the book demonstrates how brides, bridesmaids, friends, and family can make some of Paula's most popular wedding flower arrangements themselves.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true gem for LIFE!
... I now give [this] as a gift to anyone and everyone who whines about dating!
I quote Dr. Allen, I love Dr. Allen. ...
Not only is this book good for dating, its good for understanding people period. Who is masculine energy and how to spot them and who is feminine energy and why. Once you explain this simple insight to people they nod and identify everyone around them!

The book has a great quiz to help you identify yourself and then so many outlines of who and what you are and how to find someone to compliment that. People often say but I don't want to give up being me to meet someone. And yet we do it all the times to fit into the right job. Its not so much of giving up yourself as packaging yourself honestly as to who you are and what you truly want.

It really also helps you think and focus on what is important to you in a relationship. From living arrangements to sex this book covers it all and it breaks it down in chunks you can understand. It also covers the honeymoon phase and the imperfect phase and how to know where your relationship is headed. And most importantly HOW to argue. The wonderful thing about the structure is that its balanced. You never feel like you're getting only half the picture and if you're really smart you can simply start reading the book as energy and not apply gender to the pronoun usage.

I also think it gives incredible insights to communication period, its one of the first ways I use to get a feel for a person and learn how to communicate with them. Dr. Allen teaches you an invalubale, life long tool so quickly and simply in what to listen for that you will literally run thru your life calling out who was which energy.

Can you guess which energy I am from this review?

I recommend this book avidly and wholeheartedly as a gift to self and others and the used price is so right to give it as ... gift!

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent advice on relating to men.
I honestly believe that between this book & "The Rules" book, which seem to stem from the same ideas, (1 difference I noticed is that 1 says to wait a while to have sex & this book seems to believe it is in a womans best interest to wait until she gets a commitment -) that I have an advantage in having a good romantic relationship that I did not have before. The concepts may not flow with a lot of feminism ideas or "we've come a long way baby" style of thinking - HOWEVER - how many men do you hear say "OOH look at that woman - I want her because she's so succesful - & way more assertive than me - now I have someone to tell me what to do" The book explains why it is more sexually attractive to a man for a woman to be more on the passive receiving side than the aggressive side. If we REALLY take the book's advise & just listen to our feelings & stop behaving like a man - like we might need to do in the work place (use our male energy), it actually makes life better (for myself anyway). It's nice to feel that it's ok to stay home with our children & depend on a man (if we can afford it)- an idea that modern thinking is wiping out - even scoffing at. I'm coming from an environment where most of my friends have masters degrees or at least bachelors degrees & staying home just seems like an unspoken no-no - like you've waisted your college education & that you're just plain lazy if you don't "strive for the best" I needed this book. I like the concept of female & male energy - I've used the ideas on my boyfriend & I feel a natural good flow between us. Sex REALLY is better when your man initiates it. & when we do things HE initiates it feels like our connection is stronger in the romantic sense. I wish I could go around telling all of the women in my life about the book & the concept of female passiveness/receptivity - but it's hard to preach to someone when you think they won't understand or believe it. I highly recommend this book to all women - who are frustrated with their relationships with men or just want a really honest viewpoint on how romance & relationships really work & why.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book is a must read for anyone wanting a long term rela
Getting to I Do is a must read for anyone who wants to find, keep, and/or improve a long term relationship/marraige. Dr. Pat's principles work equally well for straight relationships, gay relationships, lesbian relationships, and/or transgendered relationships. Pat's basic premis is that for along-term relationship to work, one parter must be the masculine/yang/ thinking energy in the relationship, while the other partner is the feminine/yin/feeling partner in the relationship.

I have noticed that a few customers have disagreed with Dr. Pat's principles, most of the disagreements expressed seem to be due to the fact that these readers may not have read the book thoroughly and carefully. In the following paragraphs, I will list the complaints that the readers have expressed, and then I will explain why these readers have misunderstood what Dr. Pat is trying to say.

The first complaint that readers express is that they believe that Dr. Pat is saying that a feminine energy person must only participate in "femine type tasks". Dr. Pat does not say this at all. In fact, Dr. Pat says that there is no such thing as a task that is clearly masculine or clearly feminine. In other words, Dr. Pat says that the feminine partner in the relationship can fix cars, play football, etc. and the masculine partner in the relationship can sew, do dishes, etc.

The second complaint that readers have is that Dr. Pat refers to androgynous people as narcisits. If these readers would truly analyze what Dr. Pat is saying, they would realize that her description of a narcisist is a person who wants both their feelings and thoughts respected by their partner. She does not mean narcisist in the sense of describing a person who is self-obsessed and does not care about people. Readers should realize that words often have more than one meaning. For example, the word "right" can mean a direction or point of reference such as being right-handed or making a right turn, and in a different context it can describe being accurate or correct, such as doing the right thing or picking the right answer. Keeping this in mind, readers should realize that Dr. Pat's definition of narcisist is different from the definition that we commonly use.

The third misconception that readers have about Dr. Pat is that they think that she is saying that the masculine partner in the relationship must be masculine in every aspect of his or her life, and the feminine partner in the relationship must be feminine in every aspect of his or her life. Dr. Pat does not say this at all. She simply says that a person should maintain their primarilly masculin or primarilly feminine role when interacting with his or her spouse. The feminine partner in the relationship can be masculine at work, on the athletic field, when interacting with his or her friends, etc. etc--just not with his or her spouse. And the masculine partner in the relationship can be feminine when interacting with his or her friends, family, etc--just not with his or her spouse. Dr. Pat clearly states that each of us has both masculine and feminine energy, and that we can incorporate both those energies into any or all of our activities and interactions outside of our relationships.

Another complaint that some readers express is that they think Dr. Pat is saying that the masculine energy partener in the relationship can never express his or her feelings in the relationship and the feminine energy person can never express his or her thoughts in the relationship. If these readers would read the book more carefully, they would see that Dr Pat clearly states that while the masculine energy partner should primarilly be the thinker and the feminine partner should primarilly be the feeler, the partners can switch roles when necessary as long as they ask each other for permission before they do so. For example, if the masculine partner wants to express his or her feelings, he or she should say the following to his or her partner: "I have a feeling I would like to express, would you like to hear it now, or would you rather hear it sometime before bed." Likewise, if the feminine partner in the relationship wants to express a thought or idea, he or she would say "I have a thought/idea that I would like to share with you, would you like to here it now or hear it sometime before bed?".

The fith complaint that many readers have is that they think that Dr. Pat believes that the woman should be feminine and the man should be masculine. Dr. Pat does not say this at all. All she says is that one of the partners should be masculine and the other partner should be feminine--therefore, she says that a successful relationship could consist of a masculine man and a feminine woman, a masculine woman and a feminine man, a masculine man and a feminine man, or a masculine woman and a feminine woman.

The sixth complaint that readers have is that they think that a person should not have to choose to play a role in order to be in a relationship. Well, the bottom line is that anything worth while in life recquires some sort of sacrifice and hard work. If one wants to drive a car, he or she needs to pay insurance and take a driving test. If one wants to be a good piano player, her or she needs to practice playing scales and reading music. If one wants a college degree, he or she needs to spend a lot of hours studying. If one wants to lose weight, he ors he needs to eat healthey and exercise. Therefore, one needs to realize that if he or she wants a long term relationship/marraige that is happy and healthy for both partners, then he or she has to be willing to do hard work and makes some sacrifices/compromises--otherwise the person should either remain single, be in a co-dependent/dysfunctional relationship, or just have short term/casual relationships.

In closing, I suggest that if you have not read Getting to I Do, you should read it. And if you have read it and don't like it, you should read it again--this time read it more slowly and more carefully.

2-0 out of 5 stars Sorry women, it's not all our fault...
Women tend to want to fix things in relationships. That's why the majority of books about relationships are geared toward women. We are supposed to be the nurturers, the givers, the "feelers." Men are supposed to "protect us" "defend us" and "support us" or at least provide for our survival.

All that is fine and dandy, except for one thing. Why is it that women in our country are doing all the work in the relationship? Why do we feel unfulfilled, unnurtured, unwanted? Well, the answer is because men do not know how to communicate their feelings for us. They are stuck in their "protective, defender role"

Today, women no longer need to be protected or supported monetarily. We are liberated, educated and smart enough (thank you men, you helped too!) to provide for ourselves and our survival. We can even support our children when their fathers leave. What we now want from men is emotional support. Is that too much to ask to our lovers? In my opinion NO!. Men don't know how to do this, they need to learn it.

We've learned, we read all the books, we went to all the seminars, we're tired of trying. It's time for men to work on their feelings, their emotions, their ability to provide emotional support. Relationships are not one sided guys, it takes too, and we can't do it with all the books in the world.

This book is yet another one telling women what to do to "get" your man, how to treat him, how to cater to his ego. Girls, women, go read the following books and send your man to therapy:

    In the Company of Men
    What Men Are Really Like
    The Myth of Male Power
Women Can't Hear What Men Don't Say.

If women are not satisfied in their relationships, neither are men. If women can't find the man of their dreams, then men are not finding the woman of their dreams. It's all balanced, it's all equal. We (women) are willing to do the work to fix ourselves, but we can't do it all. Life is not fair, we all have problems. Men, don't expect women to fix it all. Get to work on yourselves too.

5-0 out of 5 stars Shocking!
Please don't be put off by the corny title. And if you're looking for a sweet book with easy solutions, this is probably not a book you would enjoy because I think the material kind of requires an open mind and a willingness to sacrifice certain behaviors. Personally, in the end, I found the rewards to be great. I owe the success of my marriage (8 years and counting) to this book. Of all the books I have read (and I read A LOT), I tell you, sincerely, that "Getting to I Do" is among the top 5 most life-transforming. Several of my friends have also had good results. If I had one criticism it would be that I hate the cover! ... Read more

    Book Description

While family and future in-laws squabble over the menu and the table decorations, brides are supposed to sit and smile and bask in the prospect of their happiness-even though that prospect is guaranteed to include the post-wedding depression that hits some 90 percent of women during their first year of marriage.

This is a must-have book for any woman who has found the partner she wants to be with for the rest of her life and has made up her mind to celebrate that commitment.

Bridal counselor Sheryl Paul interviewed a diverse group of women who share their true feelings about the many concerns that can make an engagement a roller coaster of emotional ups and downs. 5-0 out of 5 stars More important than to-do lists, cake and wedding gowns ...
After my engagement high ended and the realities of planning a wedding and entering into a marrage settled in, I experienced true panic, anxiety and distress.

At first I feared I was having doubts about my relationship. I even went into therapy -- 20 weeks of which did absolutely nothing to help. Then, fortuitously, I found this book. And suddenly, all the emotions became clear to me.

I'm going to send a copy to my former therapist so she knows how to deal with "strange" women like me who don't experience total unabashed joy from their engagement to wedding day. (Those people are deluded.)

Entering into a marriage is really about finding a new identity, like it or not. And I loved being single and free. The thought of leaving it behind is quite an emotional good-bye for me, even as I simultaneously looked forward to being married. It's a real conflict.

More than that, I also had a bucketload of parental and family baggage that marriage forced me to confront. Moving on to a next phase of life really forces you to look at the phase you're leaving closely, especially as you start deciding which relatives to invite to your big day. It's no wonder I was so emotional.

I devoured this book, and I am sure I will enter into a much saner wedding, and marriage, as a result of it.

I agree with one of the other reviewers, too. This is a much more meaningful engagement or wedding present than kitchenware or negligees.

4-0 out of 5 stars Essential for all brides
This book is essential for every bride to be and for anyone who has been a bride. I found this book 3 years after I was married...I only wish it was available around the time of my wedding! It would have helped me so much! Reading it now, it helped me to realize that the crazy feelings I was having were ok and even normal.

Some of the things I could do without in the book: the frequent references to mythology and the way the author seemed to imply that in some ways you would become different after the wedding...(I am almost tempted to encourage brides to read this book well after their wedding for that reason).

A great self-help bridal book to help deal with the roller coaster of feelings, emotions, and changing states of mind of the bride.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Concious Bride
A great read for modern, independent women choosing to enter marriage. It's different for us in this generation, especially when we are becoming wives after having established careers and lifestyles of our own. This book gives explanation for the "roller coaster" of emotions and why family and friends sometimes act (or act out) in surprising ways during an engagement. I kept it on my bedside and referred to it for wisdom when I was overwhelmed during the planning of my wedding. It also helped communication with my husband-to-be throughout, because I understood where my feelings were coming from.

4-0 out of 5 stars You are not alone
While I was (and am) on clound nine about getting married to my (now) husband, I did not enjoy or relish being a bride. Upon getting engaged a myriad of strange and confusing developments occurred with myself, my parents, future in-laws, friends and other family. Unpleasant issues I never would have thought of cropped up out of nowhere.

This book explained alot about how the wedding process is not just about getting married, and how you (and others) are "supposed" to feel is not always how you/they do feel (or act). After reading this book I was better able to clarify my own expectations, and discern and deal with everyone else's.

I did not relate to every situation in the book, but it really brought into sharp relief several issues the bridal magazines won't touch with a ten foot pole, and provided a level of reality and sanity I really needed at the time.

5-0 out of 5 stars Saved my Sanity - Very helpful
I LOVE THIS BOOK! I got married in October 2003. I recommend this book to any bride with self-awareness/insight and an interest in going through the insane wedding planning process with integrity and as much wholeness as one can muster. The BEST things I got out of The Conscious Bride were these:

1)Validation and guidence for my often not so pretty/complicated feelings that were coming up before the wedding about myself/my finacee/my parents -- all of it!

    2) a model for how to have a meaningful rather than just a materialistic bridal shower (In the end, I chose both!)

    3) a guide for how to conduct myself on the day itself.
Because I studied the chapters "Has everyone gone Mad?" and "The Wedding Day" I was clear that -- of course --things go wrong. So when they did, I laughed! I was totally serene on my wedding day and I attribute a lot of it to the inner work I did before hand that The Conscious Bride encouraged, unlike any other book I found (Except: On the Way to the Wedding by Linda S. Leonard). This book helped shatter the illusion of perfection that sets up paralysis and inevitable dissapointment.

It encourages brides to embrace their own humanity and the humanity of everyone around them and thereby create the space for truely having a great, whole day. I drank up every chapter and was deeply grateful The Conscious Bride was given to me because I found it hard to find that psychologically aware, sane, realistic, humane message in many other places.
P.S. One confusing thing is that the Book is By Sheryl Nissinen but the Amazon page calls her Sheryl Paul. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for couples planning a Jewish wedding
Many of my new invitation or "ketuba" clients walk in my door with Anita Diamant's "The New Jewish Wedding" in hand, with page markers sticking out and underlined text throughout. If they don't, I pull out my copy to show them why they need this book to prepare for their wedding. Just as my clients know they need a "ketuba," yet don't necessarily know anything about the meaning, history and purpose of this marriage contract, they also don't know about many of the other Jewish wedding customs. This is totally understandable, for they have never needed to know until now.

The richness and meaning of Jewish wedding customs and rituals is enhanced immeasurably when couples understand why they are included in their celebration and ceremony -- and not just because "it's tradition!" Once they read "The New Jewish Wedding," couples have a much better understanding of the historical perspective of the rituals, helping in decision making about which rituals to include and what form they should take. They also have nuts and bolts information about everything from how to choose a rabbi, caterer, musicians, and location to seeking a personalized and artistic Jewish invitation and "ketuba." The dilemmas of mixed marriages and gay/lesbian ceremonies are handled with sensitivity, designed to help couples and their families approach complex issues.

Poignant stories share how previously married couples enhanced various rituals to personalize them. The detailed descriptions of the parts of the ceremony help couples know what to expect and to be more comfortable with the Jewish wedding tradition. Suggested readings and blessings provide those who want to give their ceremony their own personal twist with ideas for adding to the core elements. Anita clearly did her homework and interviewed many couples in order to provide a wide variety of possibilities to consider when planning a wedding.

My "ketuba" clients have all found "The New Jewish Wedding" to be extremely helpful in planning their special day and beyond, ever since the first edition came out in 1985. It is nice to know that times have changed sufficiently so the second edition could include some of the important information about sensitive issues that could not be addressed in the first edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required reading for the Parents, too.
My daughter lives and will be married 600 miles away, so when she told me that the rabbi wanted her and her fiance to read this book, I bought it, too. It has been a great help in planning this wedding. We had already read a number of general wedding books. Even though we already knew the general basic traditions and laws of Jewish weddings, we needed a resource for all the options and creative ideas. We found it in this book. Almost every phone call (often several a week) has a discussion of some element of the wedding and what Anita Diamant says. I not only recommend this book to brides and grooms, but it should be required reading for their parents as well.

I was especially gratified with the inclusion of information related to including non-Jewish family, as my husband is a convert to Judaism. Other Jewish resources, I have read only deal with problems in an interfaith marriage. The book was also helpful in equalizing the differences in Jewish knowledge of my daughter and her fiance.

5-0 out of 5 stars This is indeed THE book to get
My fiance and I were looking for a book to explain Jewish wedding laws and customs. We bought a few different books, and I think this was by far the best.

I particularly liked its clarity and organization. While other books bombard you with random Hebrew and Yiddish terms (sometimes translating them into English and leaving out the original language), this book takes time to explain them. It distinguishes which Jewish wedding practices are law and which are custom. It talks about both Ashkenazi and Sephardi traditions and makes it fairly clear which traditions are specific to one ethnicity and which are more universal. It addresses a number of mainstream American wedding practices (such as rehearsal dinners) that are NOT typically a part of Jewish weddings. And it educates in a way that makes me feel like I have a grip on the information, rather than throwing out pieces of information that make me go "Huh? What's up with that?"

There is a reason rabbis recommend this book. If you have any interest in learning about Jewish weddings, especially if you want to incorporate Yiddishkeit into your own wedding, this is the book to get.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource ! My fiance has already read it twice!
I originally bought this book from amazon when I first got engaged. My fiance and I are both jewish and have been to many many jewish weddings, but I wanted to learn more. So, I found this book because of all the glowing reviews! And I would like to add another one!

As I said in the title, I read it once and since I kept telling my fiance little tidbits that I didn't know or things that were interesting, he asked to borrow the book. After his first reading he said that he wanted to review certain sections, highlight them and then pass this book onto his mother!

I really found Diamant's book to be greatly inspiring and full of explainations on what parts are necessary in a jewish ceremony and what parts are customs and why. She really appeals to a large audience because she does not assume you have to be orthodox to understand or take part in anything she discusses. This book has also inspired me to have a Friday night "Sabbath" dinner with close family before our wedding and integrate some rituals I didn't know about previously, like both mothers breaking a plate. (Read the book to find out what it means!)

And since I am having a long engagement, I am going to have to refresh my memory soon because when I read it I just remember saying out loud "Oh, that is so cool! I want that to happen during my ceremony too!"

BUY THIS BOOK! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazingly helpful book for the clueless
I married a Jewish man this August and this book was a lifesaver! My dear mother-in-law got me a copy and it proved invaluable. Anita Daimant is great at explaining things clearly and simply without condecension. Additionally, she understands that each person's experience within Judaism is different. She provides various translations for wedding blessings and poems which will fit almost everyone's experience. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially the non-Jew or newly converted, who are having a Jewish wedding. ... Read more
