THE ENCYCLOPEDIA OF WINDOW FASHIONS: 1000 DECORATING IDEAS FOR WINDOWS, BEDDING AND ACCESSORIES is a wonderful picture reference guide for designers when planning a room. It is an easy way to locate the perfect window treatment you are searching for to complete a room and to show the customer an idea of the finished product. It has many types of styles in each category of fabric window treatment and includes many kinds of pillows, bed coverings, etc.. 2-0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of Window Fashions : 1000 Decorating Ideas
You will be surprised how amazing the patterns of the curtains that they have in the book.

But initially it is a great dissapointment to me cause the book doesn't teaches me the way on how to start and how the diagram of the curtain looks like.

I would rather recommend this book to them who really have the advance knowledge of making curtains and also for them who wanted to see more designs in a curtains.

5-0 out of 5 stars EASY TO GRASP!

2-0 out of 5 stars Misleading Title?
I was disappointed in this book. The title suggests that it is a how-to book and I was expecting "lessons" in curtain making. This is not at all what this book is about.

This book gave me such wonderful inspiration for redoing my window treatments. 4-0 out of 5 stars Mainly Classic Designs
This book will not teach you how to sew curtains but it will give you loads of ideas for your window treatment. However, it is only ideal for those looking for classical designs since no modern styles are shown.

It also lacks new creative designs, I always felt that each design is familiar to me.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great source of ideas for elaborate window treatments
The book contains line drawings of styles for all the various elements of a window treatment as well as ideas for dealing with different kinds of windows. The book decomposes window treatments into pelmets, valences, etc., etc., etc., with pages of line drawings of styles for each element. Then, it pulls the various elements together into a total look.

I was leant this book, but I found it so helpful I bought my own. It has drawbacks. If you want something simple and/or you plan to make them yourself, this probably isn't the book for you. There are no instructions or measurements of any kind, just the drawings. But if you're working with a decorator who knows a professional, or are a decorator yourself, then this book will help your imagination run wild.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Curtain Sketchbbok 2 by Wendy Baker
This book is really great for any windows. Mostly if you are a interior designer. It gaves you lot of good examples which curtains will good in what rooms with different types of furnitures. This book gaves you something that no one esle has. You will be the first one to have that design in your room before someone esle does

2-0 out of 5 stars Of limited use
I did not find this book to be very inspirational. The only reason I gave it 2 stars instead 1 is because this book would be beneficial to some people. If you like traditional style, like the other reviewers of this book obviously do, this book is probably for you. Everyone else can find other books that give the same level of technical instructions with more range of styles and better photos. The book has a lot of sketches instead of actual photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Absolute Winner!
If you love opulence you won't be disappointed! Page after page of gorgeous photos that inspire. Dozens of ideas. Suggestions for every room in your home. A decorator's delight, professional or not. Complete with a section on fabric types and how best to use them. Simple drawings instruct how to cut fabrics to achieve the look you've chosen. While the book doesn't cover sewing techniques (there are other good books to learn those, and they really don't belong in this book,) it does include patterns that are easy to follow along with 'how to' measuring instructions. This book is a 'must have' for beautiful, distinctive window treatments.

4-0 out of 5 stars Modern windows with historical connotations
This is The book both for the historian (contains numerous period picture presentations) AND anyone needing inspiration for perfectly stunning window treatments. Nothing for a sleak purse though. This is curtains fit for a king.Could be a little heavier on how-to but gorgeous pictures. This book is a home decoraters daydream. It certainly got me dreaming! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars lots of information . . .
I recently received this book and I have read it over. It is full of information on fabrics and curtain styles. There are a lot of beautiful photographs for inspiration. However as a how-to book it is intimidating. The instructions are written for advanced sewers. As someone who can only sew a straight line, I think I need Curtains for Dummies.

4-0 out of 5 stars Helpful Reference
This book is full of ideas to help plan your next project. Many of the decorator spreads are a bit wild, but certainly an inspiration for ideas. The step-by-step directions are an excellent resource for the cottage sewer, although you should be an experienced seamstress as many directions may have details missing a novice would find confusing. The window treatments I have made following these plans have been stunning. I use this book as a reference constantly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Book - Not for Beginners!
While the designs and photos are beautiful, this is not the book for those, like me, who are new to the home decor stage and simply want to "do it themselves" after growing to despise the current window treatments around the house. The instructions assumed a great deal of prior knowledge, particularly in sewing techniques and terms. I found this book frustrating and unusable - but then again - I can sew a straight line and that's about it. If you are looking for simple - look elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars The ULTIMATE Curtain Book
I was pleasantly surprised by this extremely inspirational and exceptionally stylish book. It is detailed ,intelligent and clear. Unlike other books, this book is sharp,up to date and has a feel about it of an interior design magazine- better ,in a way, because it lets you in on the backstage information. Highly recommended, especially in view of similar books that hold a lot of promise and do not deliver. It's a paperback and the cover is simple and not very appealing, which may serve as a good lesson in life..didn't "they" say one shouldn't judge a book by its cover? There you go:)

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on curtainmaking, not for beginners.
Although I found this book helpful in making lined, hand-pleated curtians for my living room, I found it lacked certain information. Other books had to be consulted regarding how the curtains are attached to rings (with a drapery hook), sewing tips (the best way to seam velvet), pattern matching, etc. This books' strengths are in its multitude of design ideas -- page after page of beautiful photographs attest to the author's design skill (and high-paying clientelle). Buy this book if you need lots of examples of window treatments. If you need clear explanations of construction details, look elsewhere. ... Read more

I am a professional home-dec seamstress and use this book for client reference. The vivid pictures are of fully, beautifully decorated rooms in various styles. Many are easy to recreate. Luscious photos ripe with shimmering silks, crisp linens, colorful cottons, and rich wools showcase a delicious array of drapes, valances, shades, and tiebacks. With an eye for drama and a fearless use of color, interior designer Heather Luke serves up lots of floor-to-ceiling treatments of chintzes, toiles, sheers, checks, plaids, and stripes, sometimes several at once. Headings are pleated, gathered, tabbed, ruched, buttonholed, bunched, reefed, grommeted, and gobleted; edges are bound, bordered, fringed, piped, and rolled.

Made Easy is rather a misnomer, however, since Luke's depth of detail in the directions does not match the breadth of her imagination in the design. Step-by-step instructions outline the basics of making each style, but none save the expert sewer will find these brief explanations fully adequate. Yet the book's very opulence is part of its success; the other part is Luke's expertise at analyzing design elements, fabric choices, and color and pattern considerations, and at adapting a dizzying array of styles to almost any type of window. Experienced curtain makers can probably manage with the how-tos; everyone else can feast their eyes on these lovely creations, gather ideas, then hire an expert to help realize their window dreams. --Amy Handy ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Photos, Short on Advanced Details
Great, creative curtain designs, marvelous for inspiration. There are solid instructions for basics such as estimating yardage, seam types, lining, etc. However there are NOT actual instructions for making most of the styles shown. The occasional detailed instructions are patchy (just showing the basics of one detail, rather than how to achieve the whole effect, and sparsely illustrated) I give this book 5 stars for photography and ideas, but only one star for detailed instructions for all but the most basic curtain sewer. There are many lovely curtains in this book I'd love to know how to assemble. It is so frustrating to see all these cool ideas and then find only the barest coverage of the techniques needed to create them!

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book for making curtains
Curtains are more complex than one would think and this book does a great job of getting you through the basics and into advanced designs. It book starts out helping you choose fabric, curtain fittings and poles. Preparation for sewing both curtains and shades, planning, measuring and caring for your curtains is also covered. A section on estimating amounts of fabric and accessories needed was a big help.

In the first set of examples you learn to make tiebacks, folded, and roman shades. Sheers and lightweights are next. I love the one decorating with flowers. Projects include a kitchen gingham with bindings, a hook back curtain and a pin-tucked lined curtain.

Lined and interlined curtains as well as flat and gathered valances follow. You are shown how to make hand-pleated, gathered, hand-gathered, rolled edge and bunched headings. Hook bands, frills and Italian stringing are also covered. Projects include an appliqued curtain with tabs and patchwork curtains. There is great advice on adding contrasting linings or quilted borders and mixing and matching fabrics too.

The project instructions throughout are excellent. The entire process is explained step-by-step with demonstrating photos. A large photo of the finished project accompanies these and a great variety of styles and fabrics are used.

The last chapter focuses on basic sewing skills. This is a great reference and very helpful for beginners to sewing like myself. Here you are shown how to make seams and mitered corners. Several stitches, borders and piping are also illustrated. There is even a discussion of bought trimmings, a glossary and a list of suppliers. This is a great book for anyone who wishes add that special touch or save money by making their own curtains.

5-0 out of 5 stars Curtainmaking--Making them so they flow like the pros
If you are inspired by visualization, this book is for you! I purchased this book primarily for ideas and and I received plenty of them. What stands out far and above everything are the beautiful photographs. They are pictures of the different types of drapes and curtains that Ms. Luke has created for the homes of various clients. She has created alot of wonderful drapes that also serve as creative artwork.

I have never made a curtain or drape in my life, but I am an experienced sewer and in my opinion Ms. Luke takes the time to explain everything in an orderly fashion in order to familiarize the reader with what to expect as well as providing you with a break-down (both in metric and U.S.) for how to measure your windows or doors with acuracy as well as how much fabric to buy. In addition, she also gives instruction for how to do various hems, tiebacks, valances, and interlinings. She describes the different types of drapes you can make to get the dramatic looks you want. In all honesty I will probably have a professional make a pair of drapes from the book for me before I do it myself because I want to make sure they are done with precision, however, that takes nothing away from the instruction that Ms. Luke has provided- what I want I don't have the time to do right now.

I would gladly recommend this book to an experienced sewer or an adventurous beginner. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars WINDOW TREATMENTS FOR DUMMIES
THIS BOOK IS EXCELLANT, I HAVE JUST RECENTLY GOT INTO DECORATING
AND OF COURSE I WANT THE EASY WAY I HAVENT DONE ANY PROJECTS OUT OF THIS BOOK YET BUT JUST BY LOOKING THRU IT SEEMS SO SIMPLE
I CANT WAIT TO GET STARTED WITH SOME OF THESE IDEAS THAT I WOULD HAVE NOT EVEN THOUGHT OF

1-0 out of 5 stars outdated
The ideas in this book are almost laughable. The projects that are shown wouldn't even look good with different fabrics. If you are into lots of ruffles and pouffy things everywhere, then this is for you. If you are into simpler window treatments with exquisite fabrics that complement a room, this isn't for you.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great book with great examples
This is a great book with wonderful examples of various curtain/drape styles. The pictures show the exact steps one needs to take to complete a project--from measuring, cutting, sewing, hanging... If one is a beginner, one can follow the book step by step and end up with wonderful curtains. If one is an accomplished seamstress, one can really take off with various ideas from this book. This is a no-nonsense, solid and beautiful book.

2-0 out of 5 stars A real disappointment
I was hoping for a book to give me some great ideas for window treatments and this book is full of just plain tacky window treatments. It does make it very easy to make them, but who would want to? The fabrics are cheap-looking and who wants a window with ties connected to potted plants?

The book is also lacking some of the most basic design concepts that I really wanted like balloon valances or just plain old curtains that open along a rod. This was my first return to Amazon. I have no use for this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Worth every cent!!!
I am not one to spend on a decorating magazine but this was a must!! Tons of Ideas that can be altered to accommodate the decor of the room your window is in. They show you all the how to's in simple steps. Not to mention all the color photos of the finished product! 220 pages of ideas that even the most challenged home decorator could appreciate!!

Buy it and if not at least go borrow it from the library! ... Read more

The bed is the first obvious place for quilts, followed closely by thewall. But how often have we seen them adorning the windows? As we learn from Pieced Roman Shades, quilts can make wonderful window treatments, at times resembling a rich tapestry curtain, and at other times evoking the magical appearance of stained glass. With excellent directions and extensive charts and colored diagrams, author Terrell Sundermann teaches us exactly how to create "window hangings," her combination of a wall hanging and a Roman shade. She explains all the details of construction, the practicalities of hanging and hardware, and the procedures for laying out a design and calculating the yardage. Four step-by-step projects walk us through all the specifics of producing three hangings and one valance design. Experienced quilters with the patience for very precise cutting and piecing (remember--with the sun shining through these hangings, every seam and corner join will be on exhibit) should enjoy this opportunity to create quilts geared to a new type of display. --Amy Handy ... 5-0 out of 5 stars a wonderful must-have quilt book
A great book for quilters looking to display thier quilts in new ways. This book is very detailed so that you can create accurate and wonderful roman shades that help to insulate your windows. A great buy that I have refered to many, many times to make the roman shades that I now have in my house.

5-0 out of 5 stars A quilter's delight!
Terrell Sundermann's Pieced Roman Shades tells how to transform traditional quilt patterns into roman shades for the home. Quilters who want more practical display applications for their projects will relish new ideas on making practical window hangings out of quilt designs. Highly recommended.

5-0 out of 5 stars What a beautiful way to cover a window!
The author explains in clear words and many helpful diagrams how to design and construct a Roman shade from a quilt top. This is just the kind of book that makes you say, "Why didn't I think of this?" Then, once you have a look at the instructions and photos, you realize that she has done her research thoroughly and combined the best practices of quilting and of shade construction.

The book includes instructions for making several Roman shades and a valance. It also teaches you how to adapt your own favorite quilt pattern to make a shade for any size window. The math is kind of complicated but just takes a little time to understand. If you can quilt or make a Roman shade, you can do this.

Although I have made many Roman shades and a few quilts, this book provides ideas, instructions, and tips that make it worth every cent and more. ... Read more

In the late 20th century, in spite of the renewed interest in historical renovation, preserving resources, and a strong do-it-yourself tradition developing among homeowners, the art of maintaining and repairing wood windows has somehow fallen by the wayside. Few modern home-repair books include more than a cursory look at wood window repairs and restoration, offering sketchy information at best. A whole generation of people have been raised not knowing that the upper sash in a double-hung wood window is supposed to open just like the lower sash to allow one to easily wash windows inside and out without going outside, or that properly working double-hung windows permit one to adjust home ventilation by allowing warm air to escape out the upper sash and cool air to enter through the lower.

In Meany's book, individual sections are devoted to the operation, care, and repair of double-hung wood windows, casement and awning windows, fixed windows, and other more unusual windows like pivoting and leaded glass windows, along with chapters on weather stripping, repainting, refinishing, and working with different kinds of window moldings. This definitive book on wood window repair and restoration is now offered in a new edition with excellent detail, helpful diagrams, simple and clear instructions, and a good bit of Meany's wry humor to make it a lively read. It is an absolutely indispensable part of any wood-window-owning do-it-yourselfer's home library. --Mark A. Hetts ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great primer for restoring gorgeous old windows
A great primer that convinced us to restore our classic six light double-hung windows instead of replacing them. So why would someone want to restore old windows instead of just replacing them?

A) They're gorgeous, practical works of art...the eyes of the house. Our windows are "six-light prairie style, double hung" windows. They're one of the typical syles for bungalows in the Midwest, and are a big part of what make our house the thing we love.

B) When restored properly, they will be weathertight as well as beautiful. (They are NOT maintenance free, however. If you are looking for maintenance free, restoration may not be for you.)

C) It will cost us less to restore these windows than to replace them with a vinyl clad wood window. This is based on the number of windows we have and the shape that they are in.

If those benefits are interesting to you, you need this book. Meany has written a fun book useful for the do-it-yourself'er as well as those wanting to learn about how window restoration works. With years of experience, Terence brings wisdom and humor (and some nice diagrams) to his writing. He gives beginners a realistic preview of what you're likely to encounter. Those with experience might find the book a bit basic but will appreciate the breadth of his experience and his recommendations on how to handle a few unusual challenges.

This winter, we have toasty warm, restored and WORKING windows :)

2-0 out of 5 stars Not what I was expecting
An important part of window DIY is the glazing. I was surprised to see the author's very brief comments on the subject and recommended having glazing done by a hardware store or glazier. Basic book that I knew most of already or got the same information from the instructions on the back of the glazing can. Drawings were sketchy and of little use. I didn't care much for the writing style: notes stuck in the text, folksy language, similar subjects spread out in the book rather than grouped under a single heading and referred back to in other parts of the book. I am returning the book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Guide for DIY
I have recently purchased an older home that has a number of double-hung windows that need sash cords replaced and some minor repairs. I had never worked with wooden windows before and was at a loss for knowing where to start or what to do. This book was invaluable. I am half way through all the windows and without 'Working Windows' I would still be lost. The style of writing is fun and informative. The book contains general information through specific product recommendations.

2-0 out of 5 stars Window repair review-one persons opinion
I found the book to be very general and basic. Most of the information I already knew. There are methods of retrofitting old windows I have seen on home type programs that lightly discuss these topics and which the book does not. Also, the book could use a lot more diagrams and discussions on finishes and paint. The book limits itself to actually restoring to original working condition old windows and nothing about updating. This book is for beginners except that for beginners there should be a lot more pictures. I did find some good tips but not the information I was personally hopeing to find. I am selling the book back.

4-0 out of 5 stars Working Windows Works
... It arrived on Friday, and was an easy read, with lots of diagrams and helpful hints. On Sunday I attacked a 73 year old double hung window which had been painted shut for decades, and everything I encountered was just as described in the book. By the end of the day, the window had been reassembled and both sashes now function properly. My total out of pocket cost was less than $20, including enough materials to do several other windows. To make this review a "5" the author should include a reference list of where to find those "hard to find" parts (including internet URL's). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Some Reviews are Misleading
This book does contain Tiffany window designs which Tiffany created using Tiffany glass not modern glass. They reproduce very well when scanned. I use them in computer application of the designs. The book which has the postcards is "Tiffany Stained Glass Windows" by Alastair Duncan (ISBN: 0486253368)which I also bought. This book does have some colored images and when combined with the Duncan Postcards you can produce some nice images. Fifteen or sixteen of the postcards are images that are also in this book. I would suggest buyers consider getting them both.

4-0 out of 5 stars great projects
If you are into doing windows in the style of Tiffany you need this book...lots of beautiful patterns which can be enlarged at your local copy center. There are color illustrations of many of the patterns which should help in selecting glass but, as usual, the actual glass selection is up to you. It would be nice if all the glass used was specifically identified (mfgr., cat. no., amount needed, etc.), but hey, then we wouldn't have all the fun (?) of agonizing over the selection.

2-0 out of 5 stars The colorized images are attractive.
There are 60 designs, with 16 color images on the front and back cover. The line drawings are difficult to determine the color of glass to use.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unfortunately, no colour chart for many patterns!
This book is a wonderful idea. Unfortunately, most of the patterns do not have a colour chart and it makes it impossible to guess whether a piece of glass should be leaf or sky or bloom from the shape. Given the time and effort that would be required to complete these patterns in stained glass, not to mention the $$$ expense, I refuse to do suc risky guesswork.

1-0 out of 5 stars Book contains Tiffany postcards-no stained glass patterns.
Great Tiffany postcards. However, I thought I would be getting Tiffany stained glass patterns. The title is misleading, and the contents were a huge disappointment. A better description, or the words "postcards" in the title would be helpful. I'm sure I'm not the first one this has happened to. ... Read more
