2-0 out of 5 stars Far too many weak stories
The best stories in this collection are the short ones for the simple reason that they inflict less suffering on the reader than do the long ones. Seldom has a sequel fallen as far short of the standards set by its predecessor as does this anthology which is the follow up to the highly regarded Alien Sex. It contains 18 stories, 16 of which were new for this collection in 1996. The other four stories go back as far as the sixties. There are also two poems.

The dominant theme in this anthology is prostitution. Almost half of the stories deal with this topic in one form or another. By contrast, in the original anthology, there is a much greater variety of subject matter.

No more than half of the stories in here merit inclusion in an anthology and the others range from poor to utterly dreadful.

I can recommend Brian Stableford's "The House of Mourning" and Elizabeth Hand's "In the Month of Athyr" as standing out from the rest but of the other 18 pieces, I awarded more lower rankings than I have ever done for any other anthology that I have ever read.

If there is one way in which collection is like "Alien Sex" it is the fact that this is not a book of of erotic writing. I doubt that any reader will feel aroused by the content of the book. That is not a criticism, it's just that some of the write ups on the jacket are misleading.

If you like the general idea of a collection of stories about alien sex, you should buy "Alien Sex" from the same editor. That is a far better book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Changing perceptions through alien education
Ellen Datlow has done it once again -- assembling disparate tales, spanning decades of writing and a multitude of writing styles, into an anthology that is thematically cohesive and offers a bit of something for everyone. Anthologies are often difficult to review because of the diversity of voices, but if the reader approaches this collection as a buffet (from which one may pick and choose) rather than a 12 course meal, there will be more than one can consume at one sitting. Classic stories by Robert Silverberg and Samuel R. Delany have been intermixed with more recent works by Neil Gaiman, Joyce Carol Oates, Elizabeth Hand, and 17 more of today's leading writers. Off Limits includes provocative tales of close encounters -- love, sex and life -- and plays with your perceptions of what is truly alien. One piece of advice: skip reading the Foreward by Silverberg and the Introduction by Datlow as they unfairly offer judgements of what the reader will find between the book covers and tainted my desire to read further. I found much more depth and content to contemplate than Datlow and Silverberg gave the author's credit for ... Read more

Book Description

Is there hope for humankind? Monsters the size of skyscrapers terrorize the mainland. Psycho-killers lurk in the shadows with glistening blades and cracked smiles. Salivating shape-shifters tap bony fingernails against first-floor windows. Reduced to the point of irrelevance, once-powerful men now cower behind reinforced doors rimmed with deadbolts.

In the nine gloomy tales of Filthy Beast: Fiendish Lullabies, come face to face with undersexed fish-monsters, hard-drinking demons, superhuman ninjas, incompetent werewolves and other absurd antiheroes. Hope, it seems, has joined the endangered species list.

Take two parts horror, one part dark comedy and a pinch of erotica, let them fester in a stagnant puddle and serve chilled. That's the recipe for Filthy Beast's fiendish fables of love, death, sex and biological weaponry--humanity at its very worst.

did this writer absolutely hate the heroine? Everything bad that could happen to her did and the violence and sexual degredation just became too much barely halfway through the book. if you like that kind of stuff, this is your kind of book but if you are looking for an "erotic thriller", which is what the cover of my copy stated, this is NOT it. 5-0 out of 5 stars Deep is this terse paranormal romantic suspense
Needing to escape the shadow people that haunt her in Colorado Springs, Micky Gunn travels to the Gunn Inn that she recently inherited from her late uncle Carl.In Pine Forest, Micky enters Poppa Joe's UFO Diner expecting alien eyeballs as a delicacy. As she admires a handsome hunk, a crazed patron points a gun at her but the intercession of the stud saves Micky's life.

Denver cop Jared Thornton is in town to learn who killed his Aunt Edith Pickles though he is outside his jurisdiction.Micky is thankful that he saved her life, but resents his take-charge attitude with the local police. When he learns she will be alone at Gunn Inn, he becomes concerned because he feels the same attraction that pulls her.The shadow people still stalk Mickey and a vampiric serial killer is on the prowl.Jared and Micky team up to stay alive and learn what is going on in this small Colorado community as Halloween approaches and another creature waits.

NIGHT WATCH is a terse paranormal romantic suspense that grips the audience the moment Micky enters the diner. The action-packed story line builds up tension on two levels; the deadly weirdness percolates as danger mounts and the love between the protagonists evolves during the taut plot.Micky and Jared are a delightful pairing of two people caught in a maelstrom of paranormal creepiness.Fans will enjoy this tremendous cleverly, designed tale; enabling a reader to appreciate this book as a stand-alone or peruse the first novel (see DARK FIRE) to enhance understanding of subplots not critical to NIGHT WATCH'S prime story, but move forward the overall arching adventure.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Must Read
Mr. Right is an absolutely delightful dose of depravity. The juxtaposition of suspense, sex and humour keep you continuously off balance from the beginning to the end. No review could possibly do justice to this one of a kind mystery novel. You simply have to read it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Raunchy, whacked-out, not for the faint of heart
The novel opens with explicit sexual description that is also funny and continues in this way throughout. It's hardly a conventional mystery, though there is a murder that involves a mysterious, reclusive author. Of the plot, the less said, the better. The main characters are two female English teachers in a community college in the Washington, D.C. area; the clientele is mostly minority. These students are being offered a Milton course. The novel has something of the flavor of Fay Weldon but is a little cruder and rather more vulgar. Fun if the reader doesn't mind the raunch and isn't expecting a standard mystery.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best smart-a** parafeminist psychoerotic thriller ever.
But I'm the author, so you may want to seek a less biased opinion. Actually, this book is my first, originally published 20 years ago and now being reprinted. It's sexier than any of my mysteries, but the wise-a** humor will be familiar. And my husband, Davis McAuley, did the cover! ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars An Illusion of a real novel
This novel is like a parody of a suspense novel, bland and unsuspenseful.

After wading through 200 pages of so called character development I was still marveling at the lack of depth that the author manages. Especially Dan, the antagonist. There is absolutly no indication in his personality that he is capable of his crimes. There is vrtually no connection between the Dan of the first half and the second.

So maybe the author was trying to surprise us with this guy's character flaw, but half the fun of reading this type of story is the marvelous sense of forboding that can be developed and which can keep you looking back at the beginning for clues to the dissolution.

But we get none of that here. Nice guy one minute, terrorist the next. So Dan has some issues with his first wife, how exactly does that lead to his need to kidnap?

And are we to believe that the so called strong, independant Leigh really wants to marry a guy who calls her "my little trollop" and other sexist inanities?

The portrayal of New York City aristocrats is shallow. It seems mearly to give the characters the free time to play out the events of the novel.

The ending is totally ridiculous. After raping, beating, torturing and otherwise abusing Leigh she turns around and forgives the guy, doesn't tell the police, and starts hangin with his daughter? Come on.

I suspect that this is a basic bodice buster romance novel trying to make a leap into a serious subject, but fails.

5-0 out of 5 stars This Book is Not an Illusuon
Leigh Dunn,an illustrator of children's books, is flying to London to visit her father, from whom she has been estranged for years. Having survived the earlier loss of her husband and son, this trip was prompted by the recent death of her beloved stepson,Joel. On the plane she meets Daniel Goddard, a businessman. The two fall into a brief encounter in London, which is only that for Leigh, but is much more for Daniel. After returning to New York ,Leigh, still grieving for Joel and upset over her reunion with her father, cannot re-establish herself in her old life. Her mother, an author of romance novels, and her agent Miles try to encourage her, but she is unable to ,and a quarrel with her mother plunges her deeper into despair. In the meantime,Daniel is becomming obsessed with her and falling deeper into his obsession. Leigh slowly comes back to life, making amends with her mother, and falling in love with Miles. Just at a point where good things are happening to Leigh an unspeakable act by Daniel changes the course of everyones' life, almost destroying everyone. This leads to a very exciting ending. This is an earlier book,1987,of Charlotte Vale Allen's, but is as contemporary as today. As always, her characters have such dimension you feel that they really exist. Her story-line moves quickly forward, never missing a beat. Once started, this book is difficult to put down.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books I've EVER read!!!!
This book was like reading a dream. It drew me into the story like a magnet. The writing was mysterious, enigmatic. This is her first book I've read and I intend to read every book she's written. The sex scenes were well written and very true to life. The plot kept me guessing; I could not put this book down. A fabulous story which I highly recommend!

2-0 out of 5 stars A Very Odd Book
I do not reccommend this book. This is probably one of Miss Allen's worst writings. The plot is not very well thought out, and the writing is atrocious. The book has some very sick and disgusting sexual scenes, that will make your stomach churn. This book isn't for the faint of heart! ... Read more
