Book Description

From the writer of the television series and the most talked about artist on the comics series comes an intricate and explosive graphic novel. Set in Season Two of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the story begins just after Angel killed Jenny Calendar. Giles is a wreck, and Buffy`s not much better, knowing the man she loves is a homicidal maniac. But when the armor of a samurai demon is stolen from a cargo ship, a new battle is pitched to determine who will master the Ring of Fire. With Angel teamed with Spike and Dru, and Giles nearly out of commission, Buffy, Willow, Xander, and Kendra hardly stand a chance. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What more could you ask for?
Maybe I should just list the elements that BTVS fans love that Ring of Fire contains. We have:

1. Spike and Angelus ready to rip each other's throats out fighting over Dru

2.Giles being pushed too far and going into Ripper mode

3. Jenny Calandar's spirit

4. Spike making a Sex Pistols reference

5. a temporary alliance between two characters who hate each other's guts

6. Kenda showing up, kicking [behind], and taking names

This is probably one of the top, if not THE top, Buffy graphic novels out there. It takes place during those golden months in late Season 2 when Angel was bad and moved into the mansion with Dru and a jealous, wheelchair-bound (or is he?) Spike.

The illustration by Sook is the best-- he captures Buffy's face, all huge sad eyes haunted by the knowledge she's inadvertantly turned her soulmate into her worst enemy, perfectly. There at least one VERY bone-chilling drawing of Angelus in a graveyard, momenarily caught by some poor b-stard of security guard's flashlight, with very bad timing.

Also, Doug Petrie wrote the text, and it shows. This could have been a actual episode story arc (only now it can never be as it involves the second season trio of Spike, Dru, and Angelus). There's a bonus of several pages of sketches and conceptions by the illustrator at the end, including many of the best drawings of a brokenhearted Buffy and even a mosh-pit Spike. If you're a BTVS fan, and want to invest in a graphic novel, this is the one to go for...the most inventive, best-written, truest to the series and the second season yet, and stunningly inked.

If you're an adult Buffy fan but maybe feel slightly geeky starting in on the graphic novels (I was worried the clerk might look at it and ask, 'uh aren't you a little old for this?'), just buy this one and you'll be both delighted and proud of yourself that you did.

Things are about to get VERY interesting....

4-0 out of 5 stars Night in Lacquered Armor
This story is set in the second season, shortly after Angel returns to being Angelus. We find Buffy and Giles each trying to deal with their separate losses and still focus on the task fate has set them. This time Angelus has managed to steal a set of Samurai armor once worn by Kelgor, a powerful demon lord. If the armor can be returned to Kelgor's corpse, the demon will resurrect and raise an army of the dead. Yet another apocalypse for the Scooby gang to stop.

Naturally, Kelgor's body is entombed in Sunnydale, and it is no surprise that Angelus, along with Spike and Dru, is intent on finding it. I've never been quite sure why Angelus always wants to end the world (or rid it of humans), but you certainly can count on him trying. I'm glad he is Angel's demon, and not mine. Kelgor, once wakened, turns out to have an agenda all his own. Kendra also appears in this story, showing a bit more attitude than she did on the TV series. It is a shame that Whedon did away with her so quickly. But then there would have been no Faith.

This is one of the few BTVS trade paperbacks that actually is an original story. Doug Petrie, a rare contributor to the comic series is the writer. Ryan Sook, also know for his work on 'Spike and Dru' is the artist. Sook's style is quite interesting, but nothing like the high sex appeal work for which Cliff Richards and Hector Gomez are noted. He is a little bit more comic-like and impressionistic, and may take a little getting used to, but his artwork complements rather than competes with the story.

There is something disjointed about the way the story unfolds. I do not know whether to blame the writer or artist, but events don't quite follow one from the other. Graphic stories seem to have a higher tolerance for this sort of thing than the other Buffy media, but it interferes with what is otherwise an interesting tale. As these stories go, 'Ring of Fire' is a bit short, and good use could have been made of an additional 10 or so pages. As such, it falls short of the drama of 'The Dust Waltz,' the other original trade paperback. But if it lacks quintessential inspiration, it has many features of interest. The reader will find Kendra's appearance and the extended play given Spike and Dru worthwhile.

5-0 out of 5 stars The aftermath of Ms. Calendar's death. . .well done
Some people may not like Ryan Sook's style of drawing but I think it really fits the story and manages to capture various aspects of the characters. This trade has everyone -- Angelus, Dru, Spike, Kendra, the ghost of Ms. Calendar. . .I really really don't want to give away any of the story, but it really is quite good at dealing with Giles' reactions and feelings. Also, Petrie really understands what is cool about BTVS -- there's a part where Joyce offers the Scoobies some lemonade when they're in the middle of interrogating someone in the basement, how cool is that? This really is a must buy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Superbly enhanced with the impressive artwork
Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Ring Of Fire takes place at a time when Angel, the vampire with a soul, had reverted to his murderous ways because when he and Buffy consummated their love and he felt true happiness, the gypsy curse kicked in to thrust him back into pure vampiric evil. The first to die was Watcher Rupert Giles' friend, Jenny Calendar. Now the corpse of a demonic samurai has come across the sea to Sunnydale, promising ultimate power to whoever revives it. An apocalypse is again brewing over the Hellmouth, but this time Angel and Buffy are on opposite sides! Doug Petrie's riveting story of love and monsters that has won a massive following for his television series has brought those same writing skills to the graphic novel format, superbly enhanced with the impressive artwork of Ryan Sook. Buffy The Vampire Slayer: Ring Of Fire is a "must" for the legions of Buffy and Angel fans!

4-0 out of 5 stars Buffy versus Dru
Despite the cover and the back cover, the main characters of this story is Buffy and Drusilla with Angelus and Spike backing up their main squeeze. Dru's new demon boyfriend is consolidating power and decided to show his "affection" by eliminating the Slayer. Which places Angelus and Spike as third wheels - either support Dru by destroying Buffy or eliminate their rival for Dru's attention. A difficult decision for Angelus who wants that joy for himself. So if you were looking for the major confrontation between Angelus and Buffy, buy a copy of the video. But if you're looking for a good story within the time period that most of the writers of the books avidly avoid, pick this up. It's an excellent addition to the Buffy Universe and Sook's artwork is getting better and better ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A all around good book.
I really enjoyed this book, I love the fact that Ian Nottingham(who is turning out to be my favorite character) returns in this chapter of the witchblade. And also whenever Sonatine is involved you can believe there is bound to be a good storyline. My only gripe is that Witchblade spends a lot of time developing storyline and not enough on action I would like to see a little more action in the next titles. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Too Much For One Book!
While I found this book interesting and beautiful it also left me wondering why they didn't split the 3 stories into 3 books. They all had the potential to be stretched into feature length one shots and were stunted to a minuscule flash at the lives of characters that I couldn't attach to and therefore, couldn't care about. If anything I could only recommend this book to someone who is a fan of the game and of great comic art. ... Read more

The water, and whatever nightmares lie beneath its cloudy surface, control reality in this frightful collection of short stories. The first of four torments follows a mother and daughter who move into a haunted apartment complex - the source of its downpours of horror is the spirit of a young, angry girl. Their story gives way to a night cruise that includes a frightening discovery, and later, to a diver who's tortured by his father's disappearance. Within these pages are four equally frightful tales of underwater horrors the murky depths that house them, and the curious people who become their unwilling prey. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat Entertaining....
Being a fan of comic book art, video games, and zombies, I figured this graphic novel would be a unique treat... but I have mixed feelings. The art in this book is very nice and interesting, especially in the action sequences. It remains faithful to the game, in that the characters randomly find weapons, ammunition, puzzle keys, and herbs... although this adds to the choppy storytelling. Overall, the story is bland and uninteresting, much of it being told through Claire's non-stop self exposition. If you're a huge fan of the game and comic book art, you will probably enjoy this graphic novel. But, if you are looking to be engaged in a great zombie story you should look elsewhere. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars There's a reason why they're 'b-sides & Rarities'
There's a reason why choice cuts are sometimes relegated to the b-sides & rarities disc and simply put it's because they're not quite up to snuff with the rest of the top-shelf material that most fans are accustomed to. In Neil Gaiman's, 'Midnight Days,' fans are given a chance to take a look at some of Gaiman's somewhat esoteric and forgotten material. Half of the volume is dedicated to short bits that he did for the 'Swamp Thing,' series and for those who are not familiar with Alan Moore's 1980's brilliant steerage of the series these stories will be somewhat difficult to follow and of not much interest. Things do pickup midway through with the reprint of, 'Hold Me,' a one-shot story about John-Constantine, brilliantly illustrated by the always artful Dave McKean. The volume comes to a close with an issue of, 'Sandman Midnight Theater,' with standout paintwork by Teddy Kristiansen that makes up for the weak plotting of the tale.

Ultimately, this book can only be recommended to fans of Gaiman who are interested in seeing some of his earlier and more experimental work. Newcomers would be better off starting off with the 'Sandman' series and branching off thereafter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Some great rarities from the master of storytelling
he perfect companion to Smoke & Mirrors, Neil Gaiman's Midnight Days collects some short stories written in comics form for DC's Vertigo line, ones that were not part of the masterpiece Sandman series that Vertigo ran between 1988 and 1996. The stories in this collection are unique, because they show Neil writing at a very early stage, and for DC characters that aren't his own - which is rare for him. For Gaiman fans, needless to say, the book is essential, even if some of the stories are weaker, and I also recommend it for fans of John Constantine, because it includes one of the finest Hellblazer stories ever written.

In the first part, we see Neil struggling with the classic character that originated the Vertigo line - Alan Moore's revamped Swamp Thing - in three short stories from early stages of his career. Jack In The Green is apparently the second comics story Neil had ever written, and it remained a pictureless script until it was drawn especially for this collection. It's unique because it sees a reunion of the original Swamp Thing artistic team, who worked with Moore on the now classic first issues - Stephen Bissette, John Totleben and Tatjana Wood. Neil's writing is clearly in very early stages of its development, and the story is good, if nothing else, as a curiosity for loyal Gaiman fans. The other two stories, which were released as Swamp Thing Annual #5 in 1989, don't actually feature the Swamp Thing himself: Brothers is a story that could have just as easily been made into a Sandman issue, though it has quite a lot in common with the Prez story (I'm not quite sure what the story's name was or which Sandman volume it was on). It's a pretty good story, but not quite worthy of Neil's genius. The third, very short story, titled Shaggy God Stories, is easily the best in the bunch, and it deals with the Swamp Thing's great nemesis, Jason Woodrue AKA the Floronic Man. It's a beautiful story that shows Neil at his best.

The entire thing is well worth buying for the Hellblazer story - Hold Me - alone. It was originally published as Hellblazer #27 in 1995, several months before Garth Ennis took over the series and turned it upside down, and is now a rare and precious collectors' item for fans of Gaiman and/or Hellblazer. This beautiful, touching, chilling ghost story was drawn by none other than the great Dave McKean, who also worked with Neil on classics like Black Orchid, Mr. Punch, Coraline, The Day I Swapped My Dad For Two Goldfish and Violent Cases. Dave's artwork is expressive and surreal and his portrayal of both the Ghost and John Constantine are incredible. This is, without doubt, one of the best Hellblazer stories ever written - in direct competition with the classics of the early Ennis period, Dangerous Habits and Fear & Loathing - and arguably one of Neil's finest writings.

The last story in this volume is the longest by far - too long by half. It's a rather predictable collaboration between Neil and Matt Wagner, which allows for the inevitable crossover between Neil's Sandman - Morpheus of the Endless - and Matt's Sandman, Man of Mystery Wesley Dodds (reincarnation of the DC hero from the 40s). More than that though it's a story about Dodds - please remember that Morpheus is well locked in a glass prison during the time of Dodds's stories (as you'd remember if you've read the first Sandman volume, Preludes & Nocturnes. The story does involve Morpheus, though to a lesser extent, and the events occurring in Preludes & Nocturnes). The story does have its flashes of genius though it's exceedingly and unjustifiably long, but it's salvaged by brilliant artwork by Teddy Kristiansen.

By the way, a story which is missing from this collection is the brilliant short A Black & White World, the Batman story which was published on Batman: Black & White. If you're a Gaiman completist, I recommend trying that one too.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good collection of Gaiman's odds & ends
Neil Gaiman is definitely one of the modern masters of the comic book. He has taken the medium to new heights with his writing on DC's Sandman. While he crafted beautiful stories and a very rich cast of characters for that series, after a while, I got tired of it. I found myself wishing that the series would wrap up 10 or 20 issues sooner than planned, just so Neil would have the chance to concentrate on other characters in the DC Universe. This trade collection is just a sample of what could happen.

Contained in this trade paperback, you get a collection of the few stories he wrote outside of the regular Sandman series. The biggest selling point for me are the 3 Swamp Thing stories. They fit well with Moore & Veitch's work on that series. The first incorporates the myth of the Green Man/Jack-o-the-Green. The second features the return of Brother Power, the Geek, showing that he and Swamp Thing have more in common than anyone thought. The third is the first part of the "Shaggy God Stories", which was to have done for the plant-related characters of the DCU what Books of Magic did for the mystics.

"Hold Me", from Hellblazer, is one of the best, if not THE best, stories of that series. Darkly drawn by Dave McKean, it is a simple ghost story that is far more effective than the myriad tales of demons and psychos that make up the bulk of John Constantine's adventures.

The final story involves a crossover of sorts between Sandman Mystery Theater and the Sandman of the Endless, titled "Sandman Midnight Theater", with art by Teddy Kristiansen. While it reinforces the relationship between Wesley Dodds and Morpheus, the story tends to drag, and I feel it's the weakest one here.

4-0 out of 5 stars Everybody must start somewhere... even Gaiman
Forget the depths of Sandman and the great writing of Gaiman's novels and stories. These are grunt works, done with all the grace and passion a fanboy can have, and the respect any newbie writer in the publishing business is supposed to show. No more, no less. Get it only if you're a Gaiman fetishist, otherwise stick to more mature works (or more mainstream ones by other authors, if you're still in the "who'd win between the Thing and Superman" phase).

4-0 out of 5 stars Like Gaiman 101
I remember my early philosophy classes covering the beginnings, the origins -- the ancient Greeks. As you got to higher course numbers, you got to read contemporary authors, people who had built upon the foundations of Plato and Aristotle, continuing a "call and response" dialogue with them and adding new concepts of their own.

At least that's how it's supposed to work. I did it backwards, taking some 300 and 400 level classes before I decided to major in the subject. I'm rather glad it worked out that way -- and that's how it'll work for most readers of Midnight Days.

This compilation is like Gaiman 101 because you get to see the foundations. I'd imagine that most buyers have already read Sandman. I found it fascinating to see little gems of what was to come twinkling through the growth. The "Brother Power" story I especially liked, as the Prez issue of Sandman was one of my favorites. "Hold Me" has been and always will be one of my favorite pieces -- McKean's art and the poignance of the writing make it Primary Gaiman, as far as I am concerned. It's the best piece in the collection, though I also enjoyed the last story very much.

I really enjoyed it. It was a pleasure to watch the process and feel the author finding his way in some of the stories.

I highly recommend it, especially for those who are waiting for his next offering to come out, and need a "Neil feeling" fix. If you don't know what I'm talking about, go read Sandman, and then come back and talk with me. :) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Hideshi Hino, the True Master of Japanese Horror
I first learned about Hino through another talented artist who works in the field of horror manga, Junji Ito. In a short bio at the end of one of his books, Ito cited Hino, as well as the American writer H.P. Lovecraft, as two of his influences. Ito was also the recipient of an award which carries Hino's name which honors Japanese artists who have mastered tales of terror. I already knew about Lovecraft. If you're into horror and you don't know his name, you should. Ito . . . well, let's just say the guy continues to amaze me. "Uzumaki" was fantastic, as was "Gyo". So, long story short, I put 2 and 2 together (and for once I didn't come up with 22). I reasoned that it made sense--considering the logical connections--for me to learn more about Hideshi Hino. At the time, I could only find two of his books on Amazon: "Hell Baby" and "Panorama of Hell". Both were out of print. Far too lazy (and picky) to buy them used, I waited for the day when more of his works would be published in English. That day has come! DHP has recently published two of his books, "The Red Snake" and "The Bug Boy". Hino. How can I describe his work? His drawing style has a childlike quality about it. This does nothing to offset his horrific tales. In reality, it accentuates the disturbing atmosphere that hangs over each and every page of lush black and white illustrations. "The Red Snake" is a story told from a young boy's point of view. He lives in a house surrounded by an endless forest that he can't escape. To make things worse, he is surrounded by lunatics: his grandfather has a large growth hanging from his jaw, his grandmother believes she is a chicken and lives in a nest, his father, who raises chickens with sadistic affection, aids her dementia by giving her baskets of eggs that he claims she laid herself, his mother tends to grandfather's boil with far too much tender loving care, and his sister fondles insects with erotic glee. As if the poor kid doesn't have enough to worry about, his grandfather tells him that the large mirror in their house is, in reality, a barrier that blocks the gates to Hell. I'm not going to spoil the story for you, but it should come as no surprise that events unfold in a manner that is reminiscent of lingering nightmares. As for the format of the book, DHP has remained true to the original layout; the pages and panels are meant to be read from right to left. This has become a current trend, as many translated mangas are now printed like this. If, however, you are new to this sort of thing, have no fear, it's easy enough to adjust your reading habits. I ordered "The Red Snake" along with "The Bug Boy" (not quite as dark, but a worthwhile read, nonetheless). Both books are well worth the money. Considering each volume consists of roughly two hundred pages, the price of ten dollars is a steal. With more Hino books to be released in the future, I would strongly suggest you start your collection now. With over 400 Hino title in print, it could turn out to be a rather large collection. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Solid mystery/thriller
First of all, i'm not sure how this book came to be labeled "ultra violent" in the Publishers Information section at Amazon - there is violence - this is a murder mystery thriller after all, but it's very much rated R stuff.
Our heroine Kurumi Ayaki is a meter maid who retired to marry. Finding out that her fiance didn't get the raise he was promised, she is forced to beg her boss to give her back her old job. Instead, he reassigns her to the unsolved crimes homicide division. She is made partners with a genius investigator who cannot leave his house, for reasons hinted at but not explained in this volume. She must act as his eyes, ears and hands, getting directions from him on her cell phone, which she must keep on her day or night.
One thing that impressed me right away about this manga - the killer leaves a riddle at the crime scene in the form of a phrase. The detective solves this riddle, and I was impressed by the way he solves it - this is a legitimate math puzzle of moderate complexity - if I had to solve it on my own it would probably take at least several hours. No shortcut is taken - he solves it right in front of you in the manga, which takes several pages and some concentration on the readers part to follow the logic. I just can't imagine something like this being put in a movie for instance, or an american comic - the assumption would be that the reader is too "dumb" for something like this, and would be bored by the math.
I didn't like the art much - it is serviceable, and the author is pretty good at building tension and suspense where needed, but in other scenes it seems a bit sketchy and a little ugly.
Overall, a good mystery/thriller title for an older audience (although not necessary adult - I think teenagers would enjoy this as well). ... Read more

Book Description

It was during the 18th century that the Ministry of Inquisition ruled over the lands of Venisalle. In the world of the Marquis, faith is not only the religion but the strict law of life and death. It is into this world that the souls of Hell have escaped to sin, murder, and be free within the possession of the living. During this time one man has been `blessed` with the ability to see into the very souls of the damned and fight the demons within. But as the Marquis begins his holy crusade to send back the escapees of Hell, the lines of good and evil begin to blur into a struggle between faith and sanity. With his intricate artwork that has won accolades from critics and fans alike, Guy Davis paints a vivid portrait of a time not quite from our history and reveals an evil hidden deep within the heart of man. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wow.
Have you heard the hype about the Marquis? Me too - and it doesn't even begin to do the comic justice. This was just incredible. Hell has never been so horrifying. Get it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Impressively Exelent
Guy Davis achieves in The Marquis what a team of talented writers and artists seldom manage to acomplish: AN EXTREEMLY WELL WRITTEN TALE THAT IS ENTERTAINING START TO FINISH. The story is amazing, the art is amazing, and most of all, Guy Davis is amazing for having done it all himself!

The Marquis is a must have for any fan of graphic novels.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of The Best!
The Marquis is an amazing book. It is almost hard to believe one guy wrote and illustrated this. The dialogue is smart and the illustrations are very dark, detailed and deep. The town the story takes place is fictional based on 17th century France, but there are some historical basis used. It was a great idea to hide all the sinners underneath masks. And The Marquis is definitely not your normal everyday hero. The plot twist at the end makes the story worthwhile to slowly read through and not just try to make it to the finish as quick as possible. This is the first in a three book set. I can't wait for the others to come out. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This collection of comic stories featuring that "tall dark and brooding avenger" Angel captures the soul (excuse the pun) of the series perfectly. Personally, I find Angel's nightmare at the beginning concerning Angelus' manipulation and murder of his own sister to be the most compelling imaging to come out of either the show or the comic series. This book features different artists, and at first I railed against the incontinuity, but I now feel that the disparate styles add enormously to the quality of the volume. I highly recommend this book to any Buffy or Angel fan. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Return to the Boneyard
Michael Paris inherited a graveyard full of supernatural inhabitants. In the first book, he fought off Beelzebub who wanted to destroy the graveyard.

Now Michael has a new battle to fight. Now he owes a huge sum in taxes on the property and the IRS is after him. Abbey, Nessie and the others try to help out in their own ways to raise the necessary funds.

Some schemes involve a celebrity boxing match between two of the biggest boneyard inhabitants and a swimsuit issue (issue of what?).

Moore ties his elements together with clear plotting and a clean drawing style. Only two real downsides in this volume. The first is that it is a smaller format than the first. The second is that the plot does not conclude at the end, but sets up a nice cliffhanger.

Make sure to read the first Boneyard book before reading this one. You also might want to check out Moore's Far West. ... Read more
